Fighting a 5-headed Pyrohydra (CR 6)

A hydra has recently been attacking travelers where two country roads cross. The Explorers Guild wants to hire you to remove the problem, so the roads can be usable again. The weather is about as good as you could hope for this close to winter. As you reach the indicated intersection, there's no mistaking it. There's a huge 5-headed monster right at the intersection. The nearby shops are sheltering folks who want to stay out of the beasts way, and cheer as they see you approaching on the Guild's business.

GAME: Pelka refreshes spells.

Selerik looks at the Hydra, lifting an eyebrow for a moment at Pelka. He reaches over, giving them a pat on the shoulder. "You've got this." He gives a little wink, going over to climb on the nearest barrel or wagon. He doesn't get close to the hydra at all, instead projecting his voice as he claps his hands and holds them high. "Today's monster slaying will be performed with audience participation! Hydras are tricky things, all heads but no brains. Today, everyone here gets to be a hero!" He claps his hands again. "I'm going to shout a word, and I want you to shout it in response! Everyone together now, loud enough for them to hear us in Rune!"

Pelka circles high overhead and then descends to land next to the party - if such a small group of adventurers can be called such. He looks first at Selerik and then at Elisabeth. "We've got this," he corrects, gesturing at the heavily armored and hopefully armed woman. "But I've never faced something like this before - maybe we should take a moment to prepare?"

GAME: Pelka casts Shield. Caster Level: 5 DC: 15

Elisabeth eyes the five-headed critter, nodding to Pelka. "I've never faced this sort of foe, either", she admits, then offers up a quick prayer to Daeus, in Celestial, to aid her and the other adventurers in the battle.

Spells are cast... and buffs are given... and Elisabeth is suddenly much larger and fieresome. As prepared as she might be able to get, she starts forward towards the beast, calling out, "Here, you!", to the hydra. "Fight or leave and stop terrorizing the people of this area!", she adds, pointing her sword at it. It can't be said that she didn't try to talk, first, regardless of who or what the opponent is...

Pelka activates his Titan armor! Testament to how rarely he energizes it, the armor makes some sputtering sounds before it begins to hum and glowing spots grow more luminous. Next the Egalrin spreads his wings and lifts off, speeding towards the Hydra and unlimbering his deathray, a contraption that looks a bit like a huge thunderbelcher with a bird's open beak for the gunbarrel. This emits a stream of Egalrin-made lightning that sizzles into the Hydra's chest.

GAME: Ga'Elian advances the initiative order.

It is now Hydra's turn! Selerik is next!

The hydra approaches Elisa, but is still too far away to make an effective attack. It stomps the ground as it moves, and a couple of its heads snap their jaws toward Pelka, but too far, as the other three heads snap and roar towards Elisa and Selerik.

<OOC> Ga'Elian says, "No effect on creatures with an intelligence of 2 or lower. Please pose it."

Selerik claps his hands overhead, calling out to the crowd. "We!" Clap. "Will!" Clap. "Win! That's right everyone, grab a rock or an old apple, whatever is handy, toss it at the beast! Strike your own blows as these two brave souls tear into the cllumsy beast!" He does a little twist of his wrist, a minor feat of legerdemain revealing a feather that he wags in the air. "Isn't that right, silly beast?" Nothing happens. He drops the feather, trying not to show his nervousness that didn't work.

The heavy footfalls of the Enlarged Daeusite stomp forward as Elisabeth charges in to battle the hydra, her longsword raised and leading with her shield. She even bellows, loudly as she can, a wordless battlecry as if in response to the hydra's roar. Going right in, she bats one of the heads out of her way with her shield as she lunges in to sweep the point of her sword across the front of the hydra's body, drawing blood!

<OOC> Ga'Elian says, "The hydra breathes fire at Pelka with two heads and tries to bite him with a third. It likewise breathes fire at Elisa with one head and tries to bite with the other. That's right, folks. This is a pyrohydra. I need a DC 16 refl save from Elisa and two from Pelka, please."

Pelka swoops in behind the Hydra, spinning in place to land and then slamming one of his gauntleted fists into the back of one head. "Let's keep at it!" he urges, unable to keep a slight chirp from his voice.

<OOC> Ga'Elian says, "No consequences."

Elisabeth was NOT expecting it to be breathing fire! Though she catches most of the firey blast with her shield, she ends up leaving herself wide open for another head to snake in and bite her on the leg. She staggers back, receives healing, and then steps forward again to attack. Her leg, still weakened from having suffered the bite despite the healing from Selerik, almost gives out under her weight as she plants it... and she finds herself unable to deliver a meaningful blow with her sword as she grits her teeth in pain.

Pelka draws back as fire washes over his armor. He balls up both fists this time and then slams then into the Hydra's body, rather than the heads. One blow hits it at the base of the neck and there's a sickening pop, then the monster falls. Pelka pants a few times and then lowers his fists. "Well - that wasn't so bad."

GAME: Pelka deactivates his Titan Armor.

As beast falls limp before her, Elisabeth brings her shield up -- the immediate reaction she had, thinking it might be a prelude to another sort of attack. When she realizes it's laying still, she steps forward, upends her sword... and plunges it down through the hydra's body all the way up to the hilt, before hauling it back out. Clearly, she wasn't ready to let the battle end without making well and sure that the beast was truly finished. Stepping back, she lowers her sword to catch her breath.

After the beast is felled, the people come out of the buildings cheering their heroes.

Selerik casts a few more healing spells to sort out Pelka and Elisabeth's injuries. As usual, he managed to stay far enough out of the way that he doesn't look like he was in the fight at all. Because he wasn't. He gestures to Pelka and Elisabeth, goading on the crowd. "Here are your heroes! The guild has once again delivered, and it was your words that led them to victory! Huzzah!"

GAME: Selerik rolls perform/oratory: (12)+15: 27

The crowd goes wild in response to the victory, yes, but also to Selerik's stirring oration. One damsel even proposes to bear his children! (swoon)

Selerik declines.
