The Adventurer's Guild had a posting that you've all responded to. A contract by the Temple of Vardama to go out and find one of their Mourners, Celia Canto. There had been rumors of undead appearing around small village, of Darling Pines, at the edge of an old battlefield and she was supposed to go out, investigate and return. She hasn't returned and the Temple has been out of contact with her for a month. Given the remoteness of the village more time than usual was given, but when she did not come back or send any message the Temple acted immediately to organize a more diverse group to try to find the Mourner and find out what's going on in the village. To help speed your travel the Temple has given you all horses or ponies to ride, and just ask that you return them.

It's been 2 days of hard riding to get to the village and much like the name implies it's a village in a forest of pine trees. There is a small sign outside the village telling its name and you've arrived at about mid-day. There are smoke coming from some of the chimneys although the main street looks deserted.

Tim doesn't travel well, he mutters complaints fairly often, though your likely all blessed the horse can't talk either, cause it would probably complain more. He winces as they reach the town, sighing audibly. "Ohh please please have a nice hot meal ready for me. I'm staaarving."

Mel doesn't ride well, either, though he's at least quiet about it. He stands in his stirrups to rub his bottom before settling back with a wince. To Tim, he says, "The Inn is probably where we want to go in any event. News passes through there first."

Korra can sympathize-- for Tim's horse. "It would do you good to lose a few stone of weight!" she counters the elf's complaint, trying not to be smug upon her own steed. She rides with confidence and quiet relish; using the Temple provided mount as an alternate, she stays mostly with her own steed, humming a soft tune. "It is a wonder we did not travel by teleport. A pleasant surprise, but a surprise all the same."

Kira was never trained to ride, but she's grateful to the temple for sharing their horses, and to the horses for bearing the burden. The sight of the town is a good thing, but the lack of people isn't. "Where is everyone? Shouldn't there be people working, children playing?"

Tim snorts faintly, "Yes, well, little village inns sometimes do not live up to expectations. Hopefully there is a nice cook, but...its doubtful." He struggles for a moment, climbing down from his horse and rubbing his backside.

<OOC> Korra says, "Investigate, I would think. Check in at the Inn, then move on to the Temple if they have one, or the town burgher if they do not."

<OOC> Cesran says, "Okay there is an Inn, is everyone okay with going to it?"

<OOC> Mel says, "Yes."

<OOC> Korra nods.

<OOC> Kira nods.

<OOC> Tim says, "Yes"

<OOC> Tim says, "Wizard need food badly"

Korra keeps her response in check for her less saddle-worthy companions, keeping her sigh to herself. "The inn first then," she grouses, rolling her eyes. "And while those who need it rest, the others can check with the temple in town, or the... What do they call him? The leader of the town?" She shrugs, glancing about from horseback. "Check with him, and see what has occurred."

Mel nods at what Korra says. "The town mayor, or whatever his title is, will certainly have heard of a visiting Mourner."

The Inn is on the main avenue of the village, called the Pressed Wildflower. As go in you all notice that it's empty. It's a small inn as the village doesn't get too many travelers. From the back comes a thin man who's gone bald, "Oh travellers, please come in. We haven't had anyone here in a couple of months. Can I get you all something to eat and a room." He asks rubbing his hands together a bit.

Kira dismounts the loaned horse, pats its withers, and follows the others inside. She smiles and waves to the Innkeep. "Hello! No one at all? That's terrible. Is everything alright?" The brief smile at seeing someone quickly dims . "Did Mourner Canto find any undead near here?"

Tim moves over to a table, sitting down and sighing. "Yes, food, whatever you have that’s fresh.....or not fresh, I don't care at this point!" He pulls out a few coins and lays them on the table. "I'm starving!"

Mel asides to his companions, "No visitors in months? That answers /that/ question." He smiles to the innkeeper, though, and says, "Rooms and meals, I think. And news, such as you may have?"

"Swiftly, before our portly elven friend wastes away." Korra can't resist a last needling at the magi, removing her helmet with a flourish. She leaves the other questions to her companions, glancing about the main room before her turning her eyes to the outside. Curiosity lingering on the town itself, she keeps her eyes in quiet survey.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Roll me a perception check everyone please"

<OOC> Cesran says, "It's pretty obvious to all of you that he's very nervous about something."

The Innkeeper nods to Tim, "Right away." He heads over to the door he came out of and calls back for some food. He returns and shakes his head as he reaches for a rag to dab his forehead, "Who? Sorry never see anyone like that in these parts...Are you sure they came out here?" He asks as his eyes dart to all of them.

Tim snorts and looks to Korra "I AM wasting away! My pants almost fell off this morning, I actually had to use my belt!" He nods to the innkeeper, and as the man moves to call back to food he looks to the others, "Don't confront him about the lies till I'm fed." he mutters quietly.

Mel shakes his head. "No, we're not sure that she made it out here, only that this was her destination." He snorts at Tim’s request for food before interrogation, and instead asks, "So, what -is- new around here?" Korra folds her fist up to her lips, quivering silently. Laughter-- distracting, but not enough to keep her eyes from the street outside. "Hot water," she adds in her own regard, leaning upon the doorframe. "In a kettle."

Kira beings to look worried at the news. "Oh, she never made it?" She looks to her companions. "I hope she didn't get lost or injured on the way..." Then it's back to the keep, still concerned. "Where is everyone? I thought that we would see more people. Are you sure nothing is wrong?"

The Innkeeper is quick to sweep up the coins and put them away, "Oh nothing...nothing new at all. The lumberjacks are busy in the forest. They are the only ones that come in here and usually only a night." He says quickly, "Can I get you folks something to drinks...some spirits perhaps." He nods as he opens the door just as a portly woman comes out with a platter of food, it's not the best fair, but not the worse either. She goes to set the food down in front of the group. The innkeeper gives a nervous smile to the woman, "Can you be a dear love and get a kettle of hot water too." The woman eyes the group, "Are these the ones..." The innkeeper shushes her and grabs her arm trying to push her back towards the kitchen, "The kettle please love."

Tim will take just a second to make sure the food isn't people...he hasn't become a cannibal...yet. After he is sure that the meat is animal, he starts digging in, though he will be kind enough to leave some for the others.

Mel looks at his companions. "Are we? The ones, I mean?" He'll grab a haunch and take a bite, since it's been a long day, and a mug of ale. He asks the innkeeper, "Who are you expecting?"

Korra glances at the food, declining her share for the moment. 'Grazing' all day-- just as now, when she slips a small carrot out of her pouch, chewing the small morsel thoughtfully. Keeping composure...and more obviously, a quiet watch on the outside.

"I would like some tea, please. Thank you," Kira responds with a renewed smile to the woman. "Which ones are we?"

The innkeeper wipes his face with the rag, but nervous sweat almost instantly reappears, "No one...she was just wondering if you'll be staying. I was just telling her this morning that I was sure we'd have some guests. So can I get anyone a drink?" He gulps and wipes his forehead again.

Tim keeps eating, and nods, "MRpdh.." He swallows. "Yes, something to drink please. A nice wine perhaps?" He looks like he is praying, since he truly doesn't expect to find a nice wine here.

Mel requests, "Ale, please. And news, what there is of it. We've been on the road," technically true, "and have heard little of what's going on anyplace."

"And you spoke of the lumberjacks," Korra adds, glancing the innkeper's way. "Are they not local that they stay here through the night?"

The innkeeper shrugs, "The only news we get to here is when a traveling merchant comes through and hasn't been one in months, I should ask you what's going on in the outside world. Aye they have homes here, they come here at night to drink." He says wiping away more sweat and he nods to Tim, "Gladly." He goes back and selects a bottle of red, "Here you go."

Kira takes a seat at the counter or table near the keep. Her smile fades some into worry again at his nervousness. "Sir..." she asks softly, leaning closer to him, "if something is wrong, please tell us. We came to here to help Darling Pines, to make sure all is well."

Tim takes a sip of the wine, pausing a moment, swishing it and nodding. "Acceptable." He then goes back to his meal, though eating slower now. He looks to the others briefly, seeming curious as to their approach to interrogation.

The innkeeper looks towards Kira as the woman comes out with the kettle of water, "Um no nothing wrong everything's great." He brings the kettle towards Korra, "Here you go." He sets out a cup and looks to the woman, "Can you get some tea please, just one cup."

<OOC> Cesran says, "Anyone that wants to roll a sense motive can"

Mel watches the innkeeper's face and hands suspiciously as he offers, "Well. If its news you want, we've got a little. War continues out of Dran, and there's a rumor of undead in -this- area." He lets that sink in, "that's why we'd expected to hear about a Vardaman priestess that got sent here.

GAME: Mel rolls sense motive: (15)+11: 26

GAME: Tim rolls sense motive: (20)+5: 25

Korra finally turns from the door, nodding wordless thanks for the water. She settles herself at a table near the doorway, brushing the rim of the cup before pouring a small measure of the steaming water into the glass. Patience in all things.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Anyone else?"

<OOC> Korra doesn't have sense motive. Carry forth!

<OOC> Cesran says, "It's an untrained skill"

You paged (Mel, Tim) with 'You two know that he's lying, something is obviously wrong in this town.'

You paged (Kira, Korra) with 'You two believe him, everything's okay in this town...everything is fine.'

From afar, Korra pffts! X)

Tim belches, and then blinks, "Um, pardon me. My stomach gets a bit queasy when I'm lied to." He smiles at the innkeeper, then turns back to his meal, apparently not even going to confront the guy about it. Just that vague comment.

Mel sighs heavily, gestures with his haunch. "Look here. It's clear you're hiding something horrible and we're going to have to fight it. That's how these things work. Really," he goes on, "your best bet is to come clean with us, so you're not part of the beatings, when beating time comes."

Kira nods to the innkeep and relaxes, her smile warming. "Sorry, I didn't mean to pry. I just want to help

<OOC> Cesran says, "Anyone who wants to roll diplomacy can, if you don't want to let me know."

GAME: Mel rolls diplomacy: (9)+11: 20

<OOC> Korra does not have it. Pass!

Kira nods to the innkeep and relaxes, her smile warming. "Sorry, I didn't mean to pry. I just want to help." She puts a coin on the counter for the tea, then looks to the others. "We should get moving again soon, to find out where she could be."

<OOC> Kira could roll it, but has no idea what it's for.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Basically you are rolling to try to get him to trust you to tell you what's going on."

GAME: Kira rolls diplomacy: (6)+7: 13

You paged Kira with 'Although since you believe him that nothing is going on, it's icly acceptable for you to not use diplomacy on him, except if you believe Mel and Tim that he's lying then you can.'

<OOC> Cesran says, "tim? Roll or pass?"

<OOC> Kira knows what the skill is for, but wasn't asking him about that anymore.

<OOC> Tim says, "Pass"

The innkeeper looks at Mel as the tough talk seems to get through to him, "All right...I'm sorry I lied before, I knew who you mean, she's prisoner up at the monument...some evil cleric came with her goons and took over the town. She's up at the war monument at the edge of the woods, it's a big outcropping of rock. She has all the children and threatened the men if they don't do what she says she'll kill them. She's got two big skeletons with her. She's preparing some sort of ritual...that's all I know. When the Mourner came the two big skeletons caught her."

Tim takes another bite of food, and chews. "You know...in most cases, they kill the children anyhow. It’s a common ritual thing I hear, so doing what they say, more often than not gets you nothing."

Children. The word snaps Korra from her stillness, and tranquility is a thing of the sudden past. She rises from the table, water forgotten as she moves towards the innkeeper. "Where is this monument?" she demands, eyes slender coals. "Where?"

Mel nods gravely. Tough love. "Well, thanks for coming clean, at least," he says with a sigh, and looks to his allies. "You think we have enough light to take them now, or better to wait for morning? If it's safe to wait?"

Kira gasps. Loudly, even with trying to politely cover her face. "The children! We have to save them! I'm so sorry! This must be very difficult for you, but we'll get them home safe!" She stands up and all but runs for the door.

The innkeeper points it out, "It’s a couple hours away, you just follow the main road out of town and the first right you come to take the path, we try the path well cared for."

Tim stands up slowly, picking up the wine and taking a long drink from it. He then wipes his mouth and nods, "Alright, well, I don't think we can wait, so lets get going. Quicker we save the kids, quicker the town throws me...er, us, a victory feast." He grins.

The innkeeper looks at Tim, "No she keeps them alive. The men that are working can see them and she allows the mothers to come once a day to feed them." She keeps them in a wooden cage she had her skeletons build."

Mel nods at what Tim says. "Sounds like we can get there before dark. So let's go now before word of our arrival precedes us."

Korra nods once, seizing her helm from the table as she passes. "To the horses," she calls. "The sooner we are there, the sooner this creature can feed the ravens!" Seating her helm on her head, she tucks the coiled braid beneath, swinging up into her saddle with a rush. "Now!" she bellows at poor Tim. "Or I will feed you carrots and celery when we return!"

Tim grunts, muttering "I said quicker, I meant now.." he shakes his head and starts out for the horses, looking at the mount before he climbs up, "Sorry, I think we are going to gallop."

Kira skips climbing and goes straight to leaping upon her faithful, borrowed horse. She gives his neck a quick pat. "I promise I'll feed you apples and carrots when we return. Now we need to go. Swiftly." She urges on, heading for the woods.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Ready to skip ahead?"

<OOC> Tim says, "Yes, though when we get close I will cast Mage armor"

<OOC> Kira says, "For the children!"

GAME: Tim casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 2 DC: 17

<OOC> Mel is ready

<OOC> Korra says, "Skip ahead!"

By horse it takes you ever last time to get to the turn in the road, but from here the path is rather steep so those that are not proficient riders will have to leave their horses behind. It's about an hours walk along the trail that steady increases in elevation before you can hear chanting. You come to the top of a arise and can see that by the large outcropping of rocks the men are at work digging into the side of a hill. A crude altar has been set up and there is a wooden fencing around a group of children. A robed female figure is at the altar and looking to be studying over a ritual.

When Tim nears the chanting, he is panting. He hates climbing steep walks, he really needs to learn to fly or something. He takes a few moments to catch his breath, then casts a quick spell to give himself a faint field of magic protection.

<OOC> Korra says, "Is there room to maneuver and combat with a horse, or best to leave it behind?"

<OOC> Korra says, "Or dismount, in this case."

Kira is thankful for the help from the horse, but isn't hurt to leave it behind. Hopefully that will keep it out of danger, too. She scrambles up the hill, not slowing until she can hear the chanting. She comes to a stop when she clears the rise and takes a look at what's going on.

<OOC> Cesran says, "There is room, beyond the outcropping is a large field, probably where the battle field was."

<OOC> Korra nods!

<OOC> Cesran says, "If you have knowledge/religion you can roll it"

GAME: Kira rolls knowledge/religion: (11)+7: 18

Mel proceeds afoot and happier that way, moving quietly along the trail and freezing as he catches sight of the bad guys. He looks over the scene and wishes he'd paid more attention to tactics when he was in uniform.

You paged Kira with 'From the sounds of it, you'd guess it's some sort of awakening ritual.'

GAME: Tim rolls knowledge/Religion: (13)+9: 22

Korra's thoughts race as she rides up the climb with careful steps. Skillful where others are not, she readies her shield on her arm as the group moves up the slope. "Why would the cleric want workers here?" she asks softly. "Is there a treasure here to be found? Something for her unholy workings?"

You paged Tim with 'From the setup it looks like she's trying to awaken some sort of undead creature.'

Kira pages: Things waking up is usually a bad thing.

<OOC> Godwyn says, "Okay, now Tim is helping XD"

Mel says to Korra, "It may just be sufficiently out of the way." He shrugs off-handedly and scoots back to cover. "So how are we gonna do this?"

Tim grunts, "Lets move quickly here, he is summoning some powerful undead. Best not to let her finish. Someone should make sure nothing happens to the kids though."

Korra answers simply: reaching to one side, she unlimbers a sleek long spear, tufted with fur and feathers-- all around a wickedly long metal shaft.

"We will ride this woman down," she replies, raising her lance. "Tear out her eyes and leave her body to the crows." She nods towards Tim, gesturing with her head. "Protect the children. I will break a lance on the priestess, if opportunity permits."

<OOC> Cesran says, "Last chance for any prep spells"

<OOC> Korra is ready to charge Evil CLeric!

<OOC> Cesran says, "Everyone heading down, currently you are about 150 feet away."

Kira sucks in her lower lip with a frown. "There was a battle here. So much death... The fallen could've been put to rest in the hill. She might be trying to corrupt their bodies." She nods to Time, on both his points. "I will get to the children."

<OOC> Mel says, "I am. Though that's a long run."

<OOC> Korra nods. "Once within 90' or so-- Charge."

<OOC> Tim says, "Ready to go...though running and tim...."

As you you start down the path towards the others, there is a loud crashing sound and a plume of dust and earth come up from where the men are digging. You can all see the woman gesture towards the men as she starts to begin her ritual. The large skeletons start towards the overworked men as the woman's voice starts to chant.

Metal flashes by-- Wood splinters, shattering against the altar stone.

Throwing the broken lance aside, Korra utters a fierce curse, riding by and whirling around, readying her sword with a vengeance.

It is far more horrifying, so she uses that to prioritize and makes a spring to the fence holding them.

Korra quivers as the ice-cold pronouncement seizes at her soul, heart shaken as she stares the cruel priestess down. Can't stop her, can't fight, can't---

Muscle moves beneath her as Breeze whickers, nostrils flushed, and the terror of the moment is partially broken as Korra urges her steed forward. "Let me show you how the Phurai Dae face doom!" she shouts in reply. Stomping forward, the horse rears, hooves smashing down shortly before the fall of that gleaming curved blade. The slicing sword barely strikes with power behind it; the twin hooves cave metal and chain as they land, the horse proving her worth with sharp hooved blows!

GAME: Cesran rolls 1d20+12: (12)+12: 24

As the blows strike the cleric she cries out and falls back. She twists her hands and calls out, "Thul protect me." White mist starts to engulf her and spreads outwards and she hobbles back to disappear into the mists.

She takes a short leap at the end, leads with her foot, and separates the leg at the knee. The rest topples in a pile.

As Kira destroys the last large skeleton there is a groaning coming from the hole that the men had opened. From the opening a creature crawls out, it's a meshmash of rotting flesh and bones. It stands up and cranes its head towards the fallen cleric of Thul, "Mommy..."
