Zapolklnex was born and lived his early years in the Mul'niessa caverns beneath Charn, ruled by the Council, with all the horrible things that implies. Worshipping Taara, believing the lies.
As a young person though he also had powers, powers he got with no effort whatsoever. These powers he used, according to the teachings of the cult of Taara, to gain power for himself. That power gave him access, and the means to see things and go places. He also happens to have innate talents persuasion and intimidation, that when combined with the innate sorcery, could give him even more options to break rules.
In his travels through the caverns, by chance he came across some rebels, who had come back from their base in Veyshan, to liberate those they could. And so, they kidnapped him and took him away.
At first this concerned him, but when they gave him more food, and treated him better than anyone ever head, it made the young Mul'niessa receptive to what they had to say. And so he learned about what lies he had been taught, what was really going on, and what options there were.
Zapolklnex came to reject Taara, instead choosing to follow Tarien, believing that only some luck will allow his people to be freed from the lies of the council. But a little of Taara still is imprinted in his thought patterns, and he decides that he will seek to gain the ability to come back and disrupt.
He also sees that Veyshan is little better than Charn or the caverns of the Council, and so takes a ship across the sea to Alexandria, and begin to use his powers to gain the ability to return and challenge the council.
