"Oh my, oh my! You have to help me! They've gotten EVERYWHERE!"

That's what Veeble Brinbeeble had to say when he stormed the guild of explorers.

“Great ones! Huge, horrible monsters that have taken over everywhere! I don't know where they came from, but huge! WIth great big eyestalks!"

He wiggled his tiny gnome fingers. "Slime EVERYWHERE! You'll have to help me!"

And that's how the Guild dispatched you to the tiny village of Shronar, where they, upon initial investigation, concurred that something was amiss. The citizens have been evacuated by a smaller group of adventurers and now it's time for the big guns to contain the threat.. which the guild has indicated upon study is 'best seen for yourself'.

Elisabeth puts her helmet onto her head, then slips her arm into the straps of her shield before snugging them down. That done, she sets out towards the village. "I'll take point, I suppose, with our two other warriors on the flanks, so that we three screen for and protect the wizard... sound good?", she says, by way of suggestion.

Morgan says to the group "always protect the wizard." said as there is no reason why that should be said. Krom is curious, but not worried, as he marches to the village. "Krom has to wonder, was told are huge monsters, but is that huge from Krom, or huge for little gnome man? What is huge and slimy? And did little gnome says eyestalks? Krom does not know monster that is all these things. Southlands have many strange beasts Krom has never seen before." He nods at the tactical suggestion, fully content to take left or right flank.

Razen is near the front of the group, humming softly what sounds like a riotous oruch song. It's a little bit ominous in fact, but he's clearly enjoying himself, his hand on his heavy flail while he walks. He's quick on his feet, but he doesn't march that far ahead of the group. The half-ourch doesn't want to leave them behind after all - that would be rude. Morgan's words get a sharp-toothed grin. "Maybe a shaman made these things, whatever they are." He nods to Krom having as little knowledge about what a slimy creature with eyestalks could be if it were 'giant' in size. "That would be fantastic." There's a rather dangerous light in his eyes as he says this.

"Whatever they are", Elisabeth says, "our job is to clear them out so that the townsfolk can return to their homes and their lives." Glancing to Razen, she asks, "Did you want to take point?"

And, there's the town. Shronar is a small hamlet, certainly, with a variety of homes suited to people of a variety of sizes. It's nothing terribly impressive.

On the other hand, it is dominated presently by what appears to be anyway a whole bunch of...

...are those /snails/?

Yes, they are. Giant snails. They're on the buildings, leaving trails of slime anywhere and everywhere. They're eating the foliage off the trees that dot the landscape of the forest village and oh god there's dozens of them. How did they get this large?

SO. MANY. GIANT. SNAILS.

EVERYWHERE.

Krom slows a little as the village comes into view, eyeing the apparent infestation. "...are these common in Southlands? Krom has not seen ones so large before. Nor so many." He considers a few moments. "Are these ones to fight with salt, or are those just the ones without shells? Krom fought weeds in garden, not little bugs."

Elisabeth looks a little surprised at the infestation, as well. "I'm not sure", she says in reply to Krom. "I have to wonder just how much salt it'd take to actually be of affect to one of these things... and does anyone know anything about such creatures? Is their only defense their shell, or do they have some other natural defense?", she wonders.

Razen draws his heavy flail and eyes the creature. "Surely the work of a shaman." He looks around to see if he can spot anyone suspicious, but he's not really waiting around either, he heads toward the nearest snail. "Come comrades, we were not asked to look at them; we were asked to get rid of them!" There's only one way to do that after all; at least as far as Razen is concerned. And it involves a good old-fashioned fight. That's why he's grinning.

They largely seem to be ignoring you.

Completely.

They're not even a little hostile, it seems.

They're busy eating foliage. All the foliage. Everywhere.

"They're clearly not hostile...", offers Elisabeth as she pulls her sword from its sheath, although it's a bit of a half-hearted drawing of the blade, faced with the terrible passivity of the snails. "... why -are- they here?", she adds, wondering that aloud.

Krom draws his twin blades, but hesitates. It's not like they're -directly- dangerous. Not yet anyway. "And where came from? If can be brought back to own homes, where belong, is better for balance of the lands." he considers "-IF- they belong anywhere and are not a magical abomination."

"I could attempt a dispelling of the magic upon one?", Elisabeth says to Morgan by way of suggestion. "... or is that what you were about to attempt? I could only make the attempt for one snail, in any case..."

Morgan nods to Elisabeth. "You must of read my mind, give it a try please."

Razen kind of glances back at everyone else. "Why are you stopping? They will eat everything if we do not get rid of them. Perhaps if we attack a few the one that made them will show up so that we can take them out!" This thought also makes him grin.

"Let's try this first... if it must come to slaughtering these snails... well, then so bet it", Elisabeth relies to Razen. With a nod of her head to Morgan, then, she lifts her blade, and it's as if it caught the sunlight just right with the way light glints off the blade as she offers a prayer in the Celestial tongue, beseeching Daeus to lend her a bit of his power, to cleanse the nearest snail of the magic that's upon it.

Elisabeth's prayer ends... and she waits a few moments, her sword still held up in the air -- then she lowers it. "Either there was no magic to remove, or my attempt failed", she says, simply.

The snails harmlessly continue eating the foliage, trees, gardens, and gnawing on the wood panelling of houses as they roam.

There's so frigging many of them.

The slime trials go every which way, and it does not appear that Elisabeth's efforts have yielded success yet.

Elisabeth lifts her sword, again, using it to point. "Does everyone see what I see?", she asks.

Krom winces slightly and follows the point to Elisabeth's sword. "Krom hopes not. Krom sees two fighting, or preparing to make baby snails. Krom knows not, and has no interest in finding out."

Razen sights the trail and after a moment of deep hesitation decides to head off in that direction as well. He's clearly a bit disappointed but holding his weapon his expression quickly clears. "There /must/ be a shaman up ahead! Someone who made these things which I can test my weapon against! Come Kampfen! Soon enough you'll be blooded in battle!"

Zaxx rides into town on a pad-hooved fellow he directs with a fishing pole. The mule in question pulls to a dead stop out of nowhere to laboredly bray in protest and secure the lure and bait -tasty turnips and carrots paired- with a wheezing cheer as the emulian steps off and eyes, EYES the scene before and about him to then raise a finger and lower it, put a glove back on which briefly crackles. And scowl, yes scowl. The lack of town officials means the mul gets to put his scroll away.

A tall human male wearing faintly glowing banded mail with a black hooded cloak lined with mauve and a huge purple panther that acts like a housecat catches up to the group as they stop. He glances around and says, "Ho, it's been quite a while since I've seen some of you..." He nods to Morgan and Razen, "Morgan, Razen..." The man then nods to the rest, "Name is Darius Isaaik, a mercenary fighter by trade, I heard you were chasing some snails and I thought I could help."

Elisabeth lifts her sword, in what's clearly a 'blade salute', by way of greeting. "We've found a trail that leads to the source from which the snails came", she explains. "Hopefully, we can put right whatever is wrong so the townsfolk can return to their homes soon."

The trail is fairly long, and the devastation wrought on the environment by the snails is obvious. They're snails. They eat things. Lots of things. All the things. So many trees de-leaved!

On the other hand, you arrive at the source of the slime trial fairly easily: a small, crashed personal airship. There's a body slumped behind the controls, indicating they did not survive the crash through the forest canopy. Numerous crates lay strewn all around, along with... puddles of some kind of alchemical substances leaking from them.

Krom nods to Darius. "Krom Linnsbane, of Mestnorr. Who is your kitty?" He nods to the panther. The arrival at the airship brings a small frown, and a shrug. "Seems was not on purpose, but Krom wonders what else might spring from these puddles if we are not careful."

GAME: Morgan casts Overland Flight. Caster Level: 10 DC: 22

Razen grins at Darius, lifting his free hand and waving to the other man. "Well-met Darius!" The weapon he holds in his other hand is of a new make for him. A heavy flail as he seems to prefer for sure, but this one bearing a screaming face on the ball and seems to be of an extremely fine make. It does not leave his hand as they draw closer to the crashed ship, instead his hand tightens on the hilt and he looks at the wreck. "No shaman it seems." He's clearly disappointed. "Seems that we have no choice but to kill the creatures."

"... but if you were thinking it had something to do with an alchemist, you -were- correct", Elisabeth says, sheathing her sword after carrying it drawn the whole time. Then, as if the thought just occurred to her, she adds, "... is anyone skilled with alchemy? Perhaps there's something here we can use to return the snails to normal?

Morgan sighs as she looks to the mess of stuff. "Stupid airship. Ok first things first let's find the source of the alchemical crap so Elisabeth and I can dispel it. Then we need to find out what company owns this ship and tell them it was heavily looted and where it ts."

Zaxx headdips a quick greeting as he stomps along. He pulls the coif of his mail armor over his rumpled head which presses the syl ears against the man's skull. "Zaxx. Of the guild. We need to let these industrious folk get back to their work. It is healthy and they might get damaged from abstaining from their commitments. But first, we better ensure those substances do not mix after we save the pilots." Rumbles the dark man in a nigh impossibly deep voice when he breaks into a run with a small blade popping into his left to cut the pilot loose and pull them away from danger.

Krom shakes his head. "Krom is simple fighter. Knows little of alchemy save to leave it to those who know more than Krom."

"My prayers this morning were only prepared me to receive that particular bit of Daeus' magic once today, Morgan", Elisabeth says about the magic the wizard mentioned. "It will be a day before I can use that magic once again."

Darius pats Krom on the shoulder and says, "I doubt you're that simple my friend, just... very focused on your talents!" Fluffy (the panther) sniffs Krom and then sneezes slightly.

GAME: Darius rolls perception: (12)+8: 20

"That's actually a very good point, Razen. I'd hope to avoid having to kill simple snails who were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time... but it may be unavoidable", Elisabeth says.

Morgan lifts up in the air as she is looking for the box or boxes that is leaking the said fluid. "Help me find leaking boxes and I will take care of it."

Darius kneels down and pats Fluffy who sneezes again to clear her nose and then motions her to attempt to help him track where the items are. Fluffy begins to sniff at the slime and makes a face, then turns away, giving the warrior a pitiful look that clearly says, 'Do I have to??'

Krom makes a half-hearted search, but really isn't comfortable getting too near to the chemical mix.

A quick search of the immediate reveals a few things: namely, the singular crew, the pilot, did not survie the impact. He is quite ceased. Dead. Gone the way of the dodo. And extinct pilot.

The other part of the situation is that you find several more potions in crates, yes, but also several shattered jars.

The jars with holes in them for live specimens. Some snail remains are in them too, indicating that a number of them were in his possession that did not survive the impact.

Well. Now you have the 'how' and the 'why'...

...but then you hear a loud crash from deeper in the forest...Like a tree was just felled.

Notably Razen does not go anywhere near the alchemical stuff. In fact he avoids the ship itself as much as is possible. Instead he starts stalking closer and closer to the nearest snail with deadly intent. The moment that they're done looking for... whatever it is that they're looking for he wants a good line on the nearest snail. Besides the clearly magical creatures need watching. Which is why when the tree falls somewhere, he's right there to run toward the sound.

Krom sighs, checking his blades before headin in the direction of the crash. "Krom knew would be something else from all this. Maybe a giant beetle."

Elizabeth hurries back out of the crashed airship, already pulling her shield from her back to get back into place on her arm. "Sounds like something else, aside from snails, was affected", she says, playing the role of captain obvious. She raises her voice to ensure she's heard, and calls out, "Be ready, all!", as she draws her sword and moves over to a clear area... making a target of herself by being out in the open.

Zaxx hurries on. They might be dead, but it is easier to revive any who wish to come back when they are hale enough. Then there is the point of clues which should not explode. So the goal is clear. "Take care that your friend does not shed all over the trail, please," says the grumping mul in between heavy steps which get louder and slower with the shouldered driver and crew of the airship. Zaxx grumbles, "Airship!"

Darius hears the crash and draws his greatsword and says, "Well, it could always have been worse, at least it's not gigantic... Nevermind." He shakes his head and follows the rest.

Morgan says after she makes some gestures "Lets kill some snails, though I want to come back here after that is done."

"I'm not sure even one of those snails could've knocked over a tree, Morgan", Elisabeth says, pointing out in the direction from which she heard the sound. "Let's go, everyone", she adds, starting off in the direction from which the sound was heard.

Zaxx sets the pilot down with a slight grunt and pets them down for the carriage scroll and toll booth seals. It is a speedy one, because he does not wish to fall behind much yet finding information is always a plus.

So Razen took off towards the source of the sound of crashings and the rest of you followed, with Morgan making good time overhead.

It's not hard to figure out what it was. The good news is that this isn't to ohard to find out.

...the bad news is OH GOD THEY'RE GIANT CENTIPEDES.

More than one, too, and they appear to be rampaging across the trees, crashing them down, and eating everything in their path.

This is worse than the slugs.

Zaxx is on a roll. He lays down the shooting and brings the PAIN. Three of the zipping and zotting blue quarrels find the thorax, number four goes into the length of the body. There is much splashing of the bug juices. The shootist rumbles, "Bless the forge!"

Krom growls as the poison courses through him, numbing limbs and deadening fingers. But he doesn't let it slow him down. Not much anyway. Twin blades flash and slice, ripping open the giant bug, and spilling ichor across the land. Over the horizon, the sky rumbles with distant thunder, as if in approval.

Elisabeth gets kicked about by the titanic centipede as it rushes past and over top of her, but she turns and trots after it, taking a tremendous blow for her efforts as she closes with it. Bloodied, she calls out to her deity, using the celestial tongue as she's done for all her spellcasting, and much of her injuries fade away as she closes to sword's reach with the beast.

Zaxx has the courtesy to take a step back. Gutsy enough, the crossbowman sticks close by the looming beast, and with the magics coursing through his system, the chainmailed combatant sinks another volley into the sizable bug. The downside is the messy leaking which rains on the mul who crinkles his wide nose.

Krom maintains his tactic of flashing blades and fancy spins. It's worked pretty well so far. But the northman does hold back, just a little, driving one blade into the wounded centipede, finishing it off, before turning his focus to the other. Another roll of thunder sounds as the blades catch and tear, shedding flesh and splattering ichor.

Elisabeth stays at the titanic pede's side, lashing out with her sword. Her short stature works against her... and the very tip of her blade, at the greatest extension of her arm, is barely able to graze, ineffectually, against the beast's carapace twice... until she leaps up as high as she can, rewarded in this effort by her weapon piercing into its body. It's not as terrible or fearsome a blow as others with larger weapons might've landed, but she worked her little ass off to land that one!

Still, this thing is on its...

Razen stands in the midst of the battlefield somehow... alive. Though his body is covered in blood from head to toe, though he's been trampled and bitten and beaten. He's still alive. With his battle fever somewhat abated the warrior drinks a potion from his bag and shakes his head. Shakes his heavy flail in hand. "Kampfen. Foes still stand in our way. We can not stop now."

Hun'rar raises his shield to fend off attacks and strikes back with his sword, slicing and stabbing with his flame wreathed blade. In an unusual moment he even manages to catch a leg between powerful fangs and bites down hard, cracking chitten on the monstrous beast.

Krom sighs, looking the last 'little' centipede in the eye. Or maybe ear? Bug anatomy is weird. "Krom has enjoyed this battle, but you need to die now so Krom can go help kill your brother." He ponders a moment. "Maybe sister? Whatever." The north man resumes his attack, his twin blade spinning in his hands. The cold iron sparks, and thunder roars, twin shockwaves ripping the body down it's length, leaving little more than goo to splatter to the ground.

Zaxx remains where he is at, rolls his shoulders and means to send it another five love notes. It being the monstrous bug who is a trooper. The smell of a million times dusty and moldy vermin assaults the bald man's fine senses. The many legged worm's durability is admirable. Three more strikes from point blank and it keeps going.

Still bleeding profusely, still limping with pain that he can not yet in his blind march yet feel, still dragging a body that feels so heavy Razen marches forward. Up goes the flail, and down it screams. Once again the half-oruch lifts his voice in song, but this time it's a battle song rather than one about glory. Gray-green eyes lift with his voice, and the mace swings down a second time in echo of him. "Singing the message in my veins, taking you voice in through the pain. Let the arrows fly, let them rain, I see your beauty through the-" And the creature falls. It crumples to the ground and Razen screams the last word out. "PAIN!" <yrch-speak>

GAME: Elisabeth casts Restoration. Caster Level: 8 DC: 17

Good news, everyone! You've destroyed the giant horrible monster.

Unfortunately, a lot of you are in pretty painful shape and are poisoned. Badly.

The good news is that the snails are harmless. The giant centipedes were not. The Guild, upon receiving word of what's happened and a explanation, dispatches a second group to 'snail wrangle'. There's this farm belonging to a witch named Alba that might be able to figure out what to do with the giant snails...
