  • Summary: Reunited once more, the expedition attempts to escape the mine with th eknowledge they have acrued. The elevator has other ideas, as does the mountain, and the monsters chasing them. Induced earthquakes stall the elevator in the shaft, forcing the party find their way upwards, be it flying, spider climbing, handing onto ropes attached to others, or surfing through the rock. Once they achieve a higher layer, it's still necessary to find their way out of the treacherous, collapsing tunnels. They barely manage to do this, with the wights close behind.

Previously

The adventurers went out into the wilderness to check for wights. Some were found at a recently abandoned mine, as well as some more troubling contents. A sudden collapse split the party.

With some effort, the disparate party reunites, finding each other on either side of a rock-fall. They move stone with strength and spells. Alas, it is enough of a delay that the ground creaks beneath them and a huge elemental appears to block their path. Skielstregar and Paenitia charge it, dealing significant damage, and leaving the party exposed to two slightly smallar elementals that are striking from the rock, while remaining shielded by it. Barclaiigh attempts a distraction so the others can escape past the one blinded by Cor'lana. This is wasted as the party lingers to shoot and shield each other. Vaera takes down the big one, clearing the way, and Barclaiigh and Paenitia exit and are soon followed by Cor'lana and Vaera. Lyme remains behind to cover the retreat, and Skielstregar stays back to cover Lyme, and then they both leave.

Shilde went back to see if she could learn more information about the worm and what was following.

Now

... with the threat of the 'death worm' and the unsettlementeals behind you (get it), you've put some distance between you and them. You've arrived back at one of the lifts up out of here and are on your way to pile into it. You just need Shilde, now, top catch up and get in with you.

Just gotta wait. Right? Shouldn't be a problem.

Cor'lana looks around nervously, and the anxiety of the situation is getting to be so much to the point where she's actually nuzzling against Pothy on her shoulder for comfort. "We really need to get going," she murmurs.

"Snacks," Pothy says softly. It's a gentle reminder that his cuddling and soothing services don't come for free. He's rewarded with a handful of dried berries brought up from the sorceress's pocket.

Skielstregar was doing decently well after the bit with the elementals slowing their attempt at getting the heck out of this hole. He shakes his head, sloughing off the last of the fatigue from going unhinged.

"Yesss, we sssshould. Can the magicsss Ssshilde do let her sssurface easssily?" he inquires, looking mostly to Meowclaiigh for an answer. "We will need to use thisss left before another earth quake rattlessss it usseless."

The inky halberd continues to drip.

Vaera was not the first to reach the lift, in spite of being one of the first to leave. It only took part of the frantic escape for the adrenaline to wear off, and the wounds to catch up to them, so that by the time they reached the exit, found a spot on the ground of the elevator to take a seat. "She should be able to resurface if she remains as an earth elemental, yes." Vaera agrees. "As you are all now readily aware, they can swim through rock as easily as one of us might walk. So, we should meet her above ground, as she does not need a lift, but we do."

"You go, take the elevator now." The little Red Knight suggests, seated on an Ivory Steed that seems small for her, so familiar is the image of her on a larger beast. "Ramirez, he can fly up the shaft."

"If we all fit the basket, We will come, if there are two trips, I will be the second and wait for Shilde." Paenitia stares at their back trail, "The time, she is shorter than my gramma! You should go."

Barclaiigh is waiting a far stretch down the hall as others trundle along to catch up. He's had to quit the cat form-- like just not feline it anymore. (he actually needs a wand he can't get to when he's that hairy; the fursuit has no pockets)

The wild bush of auburn hair puffs out from his one, large braid like a blooming halo, framing a face that's de-bruising as he channels the energy from his own enchanted twig.

It's been swell. But the swelling has gone down.

"Miss Shilde's as good as one'a them critters what just rung our bells. Reckon she can swim the whole ways up on her own." He cants his head towards the cage and looks over the crew to see who all might be as rough as he.

Shilde appears first as a face in the wall, protruding like some sort of sculpture until the gem-like eyes appear, casting a gaze up and down the corridor.. then settling upon the gathered scouts. The gaze lingers a moment longer on the other dwarf, then briefly pulls back into the wall. A second later a hand reaches forth, as if gripping the wall itself, and pulls the rest of the elemental-shaped druid into the open air. "Sand'n sink'oles, never want t'do that again," she grumbles, making motions as if to path herself down.. which only results in the harsh, scraping sound of rock on rock.

AS Shilde finally appears and you'r4e able to climb into the lift, you're soon on your way up.

And up. It's a long, slow process. All of you are hurt and the lift is 'safe enough' that you can let your guard down a *little*.

Of course, that's when the shaking starts.

One of Barclaiigh's eyes stays squinting and bruised by he can at least see out of his. It's nearly impossible to see that the ear on that side of his head has turned into a pink bulb of cauliflower surrounded by the fuzz of his jostled hair.

When he's not limping to get around, the Khazadi man turns his attentions to Vaera. He pays her wounds more mind than his own all the while glancing frequently over at Shilde returned from her own side adventure.

The brewer-turned-wilderness professional gives a heavy sigh that whistles out of a nose that's been broken one too many times. "Well, Ea. It was danged nice'a ya t'give us what time y'could," he drawls as he considers the cave walls inching past as they ascend.

"Last call, y'all..?" He holds up the wand and looks around.

Paenitia holds up a hand towards Barclaiigh, two fingers raised, the rest curled, "We are okay, save the charges for later. The rattling noises of the cage are the great concern now."

She dramatically peers at the corner of the elevator, expression and everything else hidden by her ever-grinning mask. "An earthquake? Do you think the worm is follow?"

GAME: Skielstregar casts Spider Climb. Caster Level: 8 DC: 14

Just as they're deciding who's going to be left behind to make sure Shilde makes it, Skielstregar flinches his weapon at the ready to take on the emerging elementa-

Blink blink. A heavy, long sigh. "Thank the Dragonfather you're alright," he smiles, a mote of good news. He beckons everyone aboard. "Come now, let'sss go."

And up and away they go. He gives Barclaiigh an approving nod of getting his mate back together in one piece, but he adds, "Ssssome for yoursssself? Thisss one isss... bruisssed but will be fine."

The shaking returns. Dead silver glances over to Vaera. "Vaera... can you make ssssure thisss contraption ssstaysss... working?" he inquires, looking nervous. "You ussse that weapon... sssooo..." He turns to everyone. "Thisss one apologizes for thisss."

He puts his weapon away and splays a hand out, black ichor dripping from betwixt his scales. Fingers curl and clutch tight. "We will not fall," he growls to himself before releasing the build up. There's a >pop<, and boney black wings manifest out from behind him. The spurs idly pierce the ground and the adjacent railing. "Thisss one hopesss not," he answers to the knight.

Those rattling noises of the artifice-powered lift are increasing. It's shaking, yes, but that's because everything else is.

Its of debris and grains of stone and stand are falling on you now. Just small amounts.

But you're still moving up! Slowly.

"I really wish my quickening magic worked on objects, too," Cor'lana mutters, staring at the lift. "I /really/ don't want to die down here. Telamon would be sad..."

Then her face pales and her eyes widen. "Grandfather would have a fit. Maybe a heart attack, too. I don't even know if fey nobility can /have/ heart attacks." Her thumb goes to her mouth and she bites on the nail in worry.

"Snacks," Pothy says, simply. Snacks are inevitable, and he will get them eventually. That's all he has to worry about.

"You have the wall," The little Lucht tells Skielstregar, gesturing at the wingspars. Her hand moves on to others, "Shilde, Barclaiigh, have the wild forms, the eagle or the air elemental, that can fly."

She pats Ramirez on his neck, "I have the brave flying steed, even if he the small fun size right now."

This leaves the little knight to make a chopping motion at Ravenstongue and Vaera, "The elevator rickity like she will fall. When that happen, how you will react?"

"My thanks, Barclaiigh." Vaera offers in thanks once she is mostly healed, and she is quick to move to her feet and find a railing. She looks to Skielstregar, and chuffs. "These are not made to be worked on while moving, and while they can usually handle earthquakes, this is not a normal earthquake. If it stops, I may be able to fix it. If they actually have the proper safety precautions within it. "we will need to get out the top anyways, and I'll be fine. It's a good thing I saved that potion from earlier."

Shilde is... tired. Fatigued. Not that the rest of the group is not. It would be hard to imagine her having been through trials more taxing than they were, and she has questions. She very nearly accosts the others with them, but restrains herself, mostly watching Barclaiigh work as she just sits down on the lift, a lump of dwarf shaped stone.. all she wants to do is rest.

But the shaking elevator.. or the shaking shaft... or the shaking mountain... doesn't seem content to let her get that rest. "Ropes," she says. "Tie t'gether with ropes."

"I have the ropes." Paenitia confirms, getting some out of her saddlebags.

"Oh, probably just die," Cor'lana mutters in response to Paenitia's question, having gotten herself worked up.

This earns her a slap of the wing from Pothy. "Sorry, really dark joke!" Cor'lana squeaks. "I'd... probably throw my arms around Skielstregar's back and hold on for dear life as he crawls up the wall. I really need to learn something for flying soon."

Lyme waits, patient and bruised, slowly catching his breath in silence. He scrubs at his face, wiping away the worst of the sweat-streaked grime.

Skielstregar looks to Paenitia, then towards Shilde before giving a firm nod and a chuff. He picks up the pace a bit, but he gets some rope, ties it around his waist, and offers a loop to Vaera. "Perhapsss it isss secondsss we need to keep it going."

He looks to Cor'lana, scaled brows furrowing. "No." He didn't take that as a joke. "Get on thiss one and they can tie them to you. Could even make this one bigger to carry you both easier."

Skielstregar says, "Or unless someone elsssse can take a sssoftskin," he adds. "No offense."

Now? Now the shaking becomes violently intense. You are now in the active middle of an earthquake. On an elevator.

This is not great.

Well, no one is going to fall to their deaths. The lift is being hit by rubble and debris, and you have to do your best to take shelter from that. Then it stops moving up. Worse? It falls.

It falls a good ten, fifteen feet. You're able to protect yourselves, again, because gripping on to the lift itself is more than possible. Some of you are sent flying by the sudden jerk at the end when it stops, being left very dazed, if momentarily, by it. Shilde, particularly, is a bit out of sorts, with Skiel and Vaera laying more or less atop her. It's uncomfortable.

Beneath you, there's a *loud* groan as the earth shifts.

About ten feet above you is the exit to the next level of the mine. You probably don't want to lstay here in the stalled elevator with sounds like that below you.

Good thing they all had ropes.

"Okay. The machine is not the trustworthy one with the mountain collapse around it. We take the alternate route." Paenitia decides, throwing her rope out to the others as Ramirez hovers in place.

"Take the end, I will fly up, secure the other. Use the spells and what you have, come up with me." She says, as Ramirez hovers up higher.

"Auaugh! git off ye oversized swamp gaiters!" comes the muffled cursing of the stone dwarf beneath the makari pile. It can't be that bad for her; it's probably worse for them, landing on a dwarf child sized pile of rock. A rock which is flailing.

Skielstregar is heavy. And metallic. And very much /not/ something you want on top of you. "Ack! Ssssorry! Sssorry!" he blabbers, rolling off and getting up to his feet. They waste no time, tossing the offered loop to Vaera and beckoning to Cor'lana. "Vaermiir! Hold! Ravens, get on or go to Paenitia!"

His hands rear back, as do all the wing spurs before they jab forward and jam into the earth.

The silverscale waits a beat for people to resolve themselves before skittering up the wall like a demented spider.

Cor'lana climbs onto Skielstregar before he spider-climbs up the wall, taking advantage of the existence of, well, ropes to help secure herself to him. "I'm sorry if this is awkward," she manages to squeak out before Skielstregar starts climbing.

Pothy, in the meantime... has wings. "Rope!" he says to Cor'lana in her voice, and he helps out with the ropes that are being tossed around. He'll make sure that people get secured and have exit plans out of the mine before he flaps up to reunite with Cor'lana.

Lyme holds on, white knuckled. He transfers those white knuckles to a rope. "Shit."

GAME: Vaera used a Potion of Spider Climb.

"Apologies, Shilde. It's a jungle by the way, not a swamp." Vaera grunts as she rolls off Shilde, and dusts herself off,taking the rope and securing it properly. She pulls a vial out of her jacket, jabs the cork with one claw and twists, downing the contents in one gulp.

"Between the two of us, you'll be fine." Vaera chuffs, putting one foot to the wall that stick hard to the surface. "Just don't look down if that helps. And move quickly, before more rock comes down."

Vaera and Skielstregar have spider climb. Ravenstongue is holding onto Skielstregar for dear life and has secured herself to him via rope. Paenitia has Ramirez, and the Red Knight has a rope on Ramirez that Lyme has.

The other three, have ropes.

GAME: Lyme rolls athletics: (2)+4: 6

Lyme grabs on to the rope, and works so hard, so hard, not to look down. He starts to go down hand over hand in jerky, halting moves, legs wrapped around the rope in a deathgrip.

<OOC> Barclaiigh flies into the ceiling fan and turns into red mist.

Bar has spent the majority of his life bumping into things and/or falling-- so he's no doubt ready for the accelerated program the group was just introduced to. The average Khazadi build has a lower center of gravity, too, so there's all that extra cushioning on his rump when he lands hard and bounces up into the air.

Thick arms topped with curly red hair spiral in an attempt to keep up, up-- and then he folds in on himself and flailing arms are replaced with flapping wings.

Hawclaiigh surges up when like-effort is met with greatly-reduced mass, speeding past Paenitia and Ramirez as a red, brown, and beige blur. "Whoa--! Dang ol' whoa, I say! Whoa!" He twists, trying to arrest his flight, and engages in an unwitting and feathery death blossom.

Barclaiigh flies like a myopic, drunken albatross, slowly working his way up the shaft.

Shilde, still in an earth elemental form, and seeing as how Barclaiigh's flying and the others have found their methods, glides into the stone and heads up that way.

Shilde is probably the last to recover; by the time she's gained her feet, everyone else has either taken to the air, or taken to the wall with ropes. She watches Barclaiigh for a moment, admiring his attempt to be silly and try to get her to laugh even in a stressful time such as this, then turns away, looks at the wall of the elevator shaft.. and jumps into it.

Ramirez hops into the air as soon as there is a problem with the elevator. He flaps, hovering in place, as his little mistress checks around him. Lyme is secured, the others seem sorted.

Slowly, they work their way upwards, "We need to get to keep moving. We are good. What the message is we are giving to Alexandria, in case we are separated? Heth, he have the death worm, and the death wighs. Is there more to add, Druid Shilde?"

Unfortunately, by the time she voices her question the dwarf-elemental has already merged with the stone.

Cor'lana continues to hold onto Skielstregar for dear life as he climbs, her eyes shutting tight as she quietly murmurs... a prayer? to Navos? Yes, that's a prayer. "O Navos, Spinner of Fate, I know that your sense of Compassion is gone for your worshippers--but if you /do/ listen to these... Please let me come home safe, sound, alive, happy, and well to Telamon."

Pothy bird-blinks, his wing-beating slowed for a second as he overhears it. "Navos," he says reverently, his blue eyes shining bright... and he resumes his normal flapping.

Vaera wasn't doing much of the carrying, but at least she was there to take some of the weight off if Ravenstongue fell. And, she had that fall back as well, given she was one of those who already fell in their earlier climbing escapades. While she could simply run up the side of the wall if she needed to, it was best to keep a low profile for any falling rocks.

"Unless you're a cleric, don't ask the gods for help at the moment. Focus on what you can do, and do it." Vaera chuffs. "it will be fine though, we can rely upon each other to see this through.

Skielstregar looks over, eyes rising in surprise before it clicks in his thick skull about the contents of her belongings. He abandons worries of his mate as he clambers on up, his big head cocked to the side to pin Cor'lana's arm to his shoulder just in case she were to slip out. "Pray to Navossss for spare time, and to the Dragonfather for the strength to get. Us. Out of here!" he growls, half climbing, half galloping up the short distance to get over the lip of the wall. They don't vacate just yet, them staying on all fours and turning around, a hand reaching down to grab for Lyme and yanking them up and over once they got within reach. "That sssounds fine, Paenitia! Heth hasss a death worm. Death wightsss coming."

Finally, you all make your way up and over. It takes a moment and you soon catch your breath. A glacne behind you and back down the tunnel shows that the lift is still hanging there, locked in place.You hear sounds. Rustling from below. Then, pallid hands grasp the edge of the lift and climb over onto it. Oh yes. An undead.

Just one, though. It stares up at you and then howls. Loudly.

"I am the Paladina, I can ask for the help in the moment. The joke is, Tarien will always answer that I am to help myself." The Red Knight chuckles briefly, then points down the elevator shaft, "That is the distraction. We need to go. The only fights of matter are in front, and only for as long as they delay us."

"Quickly, quickly, all of us come." Paenitia digs her heels in on Ramirez, and he trots ahead.

Shilde isn't graceful when she emerges from the floor of the top level. Maybe with practice she'll be able to rise like some earthen faerie, ascending from the stone like some granite angel. For now.. she pulls and crawls like she's trying to drag herself out of quicksand. Yes, she missed Paenitia's request for more information to add to the message... but the stone dwarf shakes her head. "Couldn'a find anythin' else.. the mountain was too angry. Had t'get back to ye. And... shit!" At the howl, she looked back over the edge to see the undead there. "Aw fer... Aye! Go! Go!" And then she's rolling along, slow and steady.

Lyme white knuckles his way down, clutching the rope like it's saving his life. (It is.)

GAME: Ravenstongue casts Haste. Caster Level: 8 DC: 19

"I-I've never prayed to Daeus before!" Cor'lana squeaks as the undead howls. "I guess now's not a bad time to start--!"

Then she blinks. And she laughs. "Wait! Oh gods, I'm an idiot! Here, everyone!" She murmurs the incantation and casts the spell--another round of quickening magic to help the party escape.

Skielstregar pulls free a dagger and cuts the ropes holding Cor'lana on him so they all could move quicker. "Yesss, we move!" he hisses, pointing a finger forward as-

Oh goodness, that energy! "Yeswego!" he quickly sputters, sounding somewhat like a bassy version of a the fast talking fish fiend.

It's dark. You're moving fast. After a while, all the tunnels start to look alike. Even doing your best, the risk of separation should someone make a wrong turn around a corner is real. Still, your innate senses of direction and experience serve you well: no one is separated or lost just yet, and you're making excellent time on account of the magic of Cor'lana. Leaving the howling wight behind, you have to find the route up that doesn't rely on the wights -- which means a lot of spiraling up ramps and more. You're getting closer, at least.

And Vaera is left holding the rope, literally, as Skielstregar takes off. It takes her a moment to pull a dagger from a compartment in her metal leg and slash her end so she's not either dragged after Ravenstongue, or drags Ravenstongue to fall to her doom, and she can keep up with the rest with the aid of the hastening magic, and her enhanced climbing ability.

"Ah, I do not know the way so well. Give the directions please?" Paenitia says, her little mount flapping ahead. Hastened and maneuverable, Ramirez threads the tunnels like they are the wind canyons of Isobar.

Lyme is a lot more comfortable with both feet on the floor, even if he might be eaten by a grue. So he's happy to head forward, picking tunnels like he knows what he's doing.

Cor'lana can't help but laugh a little to see the effect of her quickening spell have such an effect on her friends and allies. How quickly she's gone from despair to overjoyed that she could help, could contribute.

Pothy flies close, not willing to abandon his mistress. There's a twinkle in his blue eyes. Knowledge is power, and if magic is knowledge, then maybe Navos /has/ answered a prayer this day.

Skielstregar is basically galloping on all fours at this point, him huffing out gouts of frozen air as they zip through the tunnels and ramps.

"Ravenss!Themap!Isssthererampsss!?" he shouts of his shoulder as they go along, getting a hell of a head start with them tempo sped up arcanely.

Vaera is able to at least find a few signs of their passage, which means, they're on the right track to follow them back. The magic lasts for enough time to cover a fair bit of distance, but the wave of tiredness after isn't helped by all of the exertion already over the course of the day. "The ramps lead the way from the initial entrance to the mines." Vaera notes. "Not far now, but we can not stop still, we need to put as much distance between us and those wights as possible."

A few more distant echoes, things scrambling through it. The wights don't seem to have the need for 'ropes' you do. They don't care if they fall, after all, so when you finally reach the top level of the mine and feel the currents of fresh air, they're already near enough that you can smell the rot in the ambience.

Still, light ahead. You burst from the mine and into the night time air. Fresh air at last, but there's a pile of wights in the mine behind you, coming this way.

"Do we keep going?" Cor'lana asks, eyes darting around. "I think we keep going. I don't think we can take all of those wights. We need to /go./" She could be wrong about that, but it's usually a wiser idea to beat a retreat than anything else.

"I hear the wights, I do not see them. There is enough time to make the quick spell." Paenitia observes, "We should move until Cor'lana's haste spell wear off, then use it then if you do not want to make the quick stop now."

Skielstregar all but flies out of the mine like a cart going too fast over a hill, him flailing in the air at the hangtime before thudding onto the ground on his feet. A quick glance to Paenitia as they're running on the dredges of Cor'lana's quickening. "Yesss! Right, right." Skiel bursts ahead. He's faster than most of them save for Rameriez. Handsome lad.

He drops to the ground, talons digging into the earth as he clenches at it. "Voarexautha!" he snarls, filling the ground with black ink. "We need you!" And he tears open the dirt.

There's an echoing, hollow whinny. And from the pool of necromantic miasma emerges a black haired horse with solid crimson eyes. "One of you, get on!" he barks, pointing to the eerie steed before he himself resumes his brisk speed.

GAME: Skielstregar casts Mount. Caster Level: 8 DC: 13

Cor'lana hops onto the mount, not spending much time contemplating the creepy appearance of the creature. "Hi, I'm Skielstregar's friend, please be nice to me," she says quickly to Voarexautha before urging it on to gallop at full speed.

She'll leave the mines behind in the dust.

They all will. With no reason to tarry they can make their escape.
