  • Characters: Jinks, Merek, Patch, Seyardu, Stjepan
  • Place: Alexandros Wilderness: The Town of Ashenvale
  • Time: Friday, October 21, 2022, 10:51 PM
  • Summary: Jinks, Patch, Seyardu, Merek and Stjepan meet the mayor of Ashenville, Retzi, her assistant, Yolo, and their swiftclaw Yaree. Jinks insists the three are one creature, a Vouivre with multiple personalities, while the Vouivre insists they've never met before on the road or at the sandcastle. The PCs agree to help provided 'they' behave themselves. Questions regarding the Flesh and the big hole at the centre of town are answered, and the configuration of the town is discussed. The adventurers agree to regroup with a more prepared group, and depart.

Alexandros Wilderness, the Town of Ashenvale.

The road emerges from the deep forest to a blasted wilderness. The trees have been burned down to stumps, there are drifts of ash and charcoal forming dunes like the sand does on a beach. It is oddly silent, no birds, no bugs. Amongst the burnt piles are masses of flesh, looking like fatty bacon. They are surrounded by pools of congealed blood.

Some distance away from the disgusting devastation is a Vardo, a wagon of Veyshanti style, parked at the side of the road. An exceptionally large swiftclaw is harnessed to the front, it's tail extending underneath the vehicle. The vehicle itself it tilted at an angle, partway into the ditch, and has some awnings extended over open windows. There are even a couple chairs.

The transport out was 'Coach the Coach', a war-golem built into a stagecoach with a rather repetitive repertoire of jokes and songs. He pulls up within walking distance of the Vardo. "Far as I go! Mind the step."

A voice shouts in the Vardo, "Yaree! Retzi! Visitors!"

Merek is about, and why that is could be the guess to make. He does seem to be admiring the Veyshanti design at the moment, dark attire on with the hood pulled up along his features, the man checking upon his artifice watch while he takes the time to consider the ground and the place, it all doesn't really speak to pleasant things.

Patch fights the visceral feeling of her lip wanting to peel back at the sight and mess that leads towards the Vardo. "What in the hells happened here?" she asks, stepping down from the coach. Burnt trees, something akin to bacon-meat-piles and gore, all something her eyes linger upon. All of it is slowly taken in as her feet find earth, and her steps carry her towards Merek, having taken the Coach's advice and watched her footing. Heaven's forbid she ruins a boot by stepping in some of that nastiness. "I..." she starts to say something else, but she holds off, letting the words die, and just letting eyes do the work for now. Yes, observe and take notes.

There are many things suspect about a gnome so why not add timing to the list? Pulling away from the haze and smoke of the horizon is a semi-real cloud forced into the loose shape of a nightmare destrier. Black and grey arcs of energy course along its form to better define it.

And his name that sat on him was Death.

No, that's not right. Not at all.

A glittering dandy swaddled in fine clothes and conspicuous amounts of jeweled adornment rides down to settle near the wagon. His dark green suit is almost black, trimmed in braided gold, and dotted with buttons polished to the highest sheen. A whisper-thin eyebrow arcs curiously at the arrival of the second wagon but he reserves comment for the moment.

Seyardu had her gaze glued to the outside of the carriage, and one of her hands glued to her snout, partly due to a need to actually see what was going on here.

Upon arrival the cleric takes a few unsteady steps down and out of the vehicle, stepping off to one side. "Merek, Jinks, peace on your nests. Would we meet under better circumstances, rather than whatever atrocities have taken place here." She greets grimly.

A woman appears at the back window. She has short cropped green hair and a sharp featured face that is somewhat elvish. Her non-elvish features are some fine muscle definition, curves, and scales in a few places like on her cheek bones. She also has slit pupils. Her clothes are elaborate, translucent and diaphanous, yet oddly martial. "Oh! We did that, the burning. Fire doesn't work on the Flesh stuff. It's safe as long as you don't get too close.

"'Safe is relative'," a second woman says, she appearing in the side window. In features she is similar to the other woman, a sister or a twin, with an autumn theme to her hair and clothing. While hers clothing is equally flimsy, it's less revealing and more like vestments or a judge's robes. "They keep growing. We keep making the burn circle larger."

The autumn woman frowns, looking at the group, focusing on Jinks, then Seyardu, "Well I recognize some of you. Those who don't know me, I'm Mayor Retzi, this is my assistant Yolo, and our swiftclaw is Yaree."

"So are you here for the scourging or the town planning?"

"Merek, and scourging?" Merek asks, when he meets the mayor, nodding a bit. "Pleasure," he then adds, as much as that greeting can mean at least at the moment. The man takes the time to generally listen to everyone else, at least at the moment.

"Oh, names. Yes." Patch says softly, a finger rising to tap her chin as she doesn't seem entirely trusting of the situation. "I'm Patch." she offers, looking from Merek to the Mayor as if she too is interested in what that question asked.

With the mention of the fleshy piles, and the burning, Patch dares let her eyes fall back on that mess. "Is this all part of the 'scourging'?"

Patch's arms soon cross before her, even darting a glance to Jinks, and Seyardu. "I don't think I have met any of you, have I?" "Ridding the town of the Flesh," the verdant themed woman says, gesturing at the burnt piles of ash and meat, "A notice was supposed to be put up at your fight club."

She grins widely at Patch, her canines seem unusually long. Not half-orc tusks, more on the fangy side. "Hi Patch! You're cute. We absolutely haven't met you before."

"And yes, it's getting rid of ... that."

"Scourgings are on Variday," Jinks drawls in his lyrical tenor as he manages to affect a tired smile for Seyardu. "But only if I've been especially delinquent." He seems content to remain on horseback for now-- perhaps seeking to spare his neck from looking up at everyone else assembled.

"Merek, it's been two epochs; how's the harem?" A black-eye winks as he shifts in his seat. The sith-makar earns a returned 'peace on your nest' on his practiced Draconic. Finally, he waggles fingers with too many rings 'hello' at Patch. "Jinks," he offers by way of introduction.

"That thing is still in the hole," the gnome asides to the wagoned women and working animal. "The plethora of smaller meat creatures aren't particularly threatening beyond their abundance. Wrangle a small army of mercenaries and you can be done with those.

"I've yet to espy the dweller below but I've the sense of something supremely terrible."

"Hmm? Oh, I don't believe I have yet you before. Peace on your nest, my Name is Seyardu, Shaman cast, and cleric of Althea. Just Seyardu is plenty enough. And I don't believe I have met the people at this town, but it may simply be forgotten. I apologize if that is the case."

"I do not know what I am doing here quite yet, or what I should be doing, that is simply what I am here to determine, and to provide aid where I can. This seems like, well it is an area with a high risk of injury."

"We hired a few mercenary bands. The worked on the fringes, beat it back some." The auburn woman, Mayor Retzi, answers Jinks by leaning out of her window towards him and his horse.

She frowns, "There is something down the hole. We've overflown it, and it reacts a lot more, tried shooting at us."

Yolo, at the back of the wagon, addresses Seyardu, nodding, "That's right. You have never met us. There's just the three of us at the town currently. It was evacuated for the Wight Worms. And then they can't come back, because the Flesh over-ran it and it got destroyed."

"It is pretty dangerous. Well, we need some adventurers to go destroy what's in the hole, and then we need to rebuild the town."

"Yes, you're the experts here." The mayor confirms her assistant.

Stjepan has been ballast for the coach, and finally comes out, looking around. He sniffs the air, considering the scene. "Smells like spell-work." He looks at the hole. "It's always got to be a damned hole," says the giant, sounding resigned.

The hole is elsewhere. This is the base camp.

Stjepan nodnods. He still looks in the general direction of the hole, notionally.

"Well, that's the Wight Worm's fault, they made them." Retzi replies, waving. "Hi big guy. Got a name or is 'Big Guy' okay?"

A pierced ear is given a flick, Patch's attention roaming to each person as they speak. At the compliment from the fanged-woman, a half-smile is flashed briefly, even giving a curt nod. "Aren't you delightful. Next, you'll be saying I look like a snack." a wink cast as she huffs a breath to keep herself from laughing at her own sense of humor.

"Honestly, I..." a pause to her words again as her mind seizes on the talking of the mayor. "Wait, so there is something in a hole? And you flooded it?" letting the notes of the story tick off through her mind. "I hope to Vaire it's not another damned dragon bone, or bug nest"

"Stjepan!" moving over the the larger jotun, looking up to someone she knows, actual excitement crossing her features. "Finally, someone I know. Good. I don't feel so awkward here." reaching to pat at one of the man's arms. "I'm totally lose on what's going on."

"Is it worth knowing and remembering their names?" Yolo asides to the mayor.

"Oh, probably. They remember their names, so." Retzi replies.

The swiftclaw at the front of the wagon snorts and lies down on the ground.

"Stjepan," he says absently, then grins. "Hey Patch, charming the locals already, I see." He pats the back of her hand comfortingly. "It looks like the aftermath of the worm attacks -- smells like it, too."

Yolo leans towards Patch, quite far out of her window. "You do look like a snack! Why don't you have a chair, right there!"

There is a small collection of seats in a semi-circle at the back of the Vardo.

Retzi points, off down the road, at an unremarkable spot in the distance, indistinguishable from the rest of the ruins, ash and lumps of flesh. "That's the town centre, about two miles that way. That's where the hole is."

"The Wights surrounded the town, the Wight Worms came up out of the hole, we destroyed those. After that, those Flesh things started coming out, eating whatever corpses weren't completely burned, and kept spreading."

Retzi leans back, "Fire and slashing weapons make them larger too, and we thought maybe a really big fire might do it."

"But it didn't." Yolo adds, then grins. "We flooded the hole with fire."

"Wasn't our best idea." Retzi concludes.

The swiftclaw snorts again.

"Flying is easiest... but you can outpace the globs of offal on foot," Jinks sighs. "So long as you're not surrounded. They seem content to idle until you get too close."

The gnome pauses to clear his throat, fishing a handkerchief out from his coat sleeve before coughing into it. Whatever biproduct of breathing the ash he finds draws a frown and grimace. He hums and waves a hand over the cloth to clean it before vanishing the square away with a flourish.

"You've met her/them/it, Seyardu," Jinks corrects with a side-eyed look at the 'mayor' and her twin, "but she's trying her best to turn over a new leaf.

"No slaves this time, right?" It helps to remind people to keep them from falling into old habits.

"Ah, peace on your nest Stjepan, it has been some time. I suppose if you already know him, that makes this easier." The cleric smiles, one that just as quickly vanishes as more tlak of what happened continues. "I have? And no slaves _this time_?" She asks, raising one brow. "If you say so, I have been wrong in the past about people turning over a new leaf, so, I will give you a gift of uncertainty, Jinks. And whether or not that does matter, these creatures, and whatever lies within are a danger to the surrounding area."

"Right." Retzi nods, her long auburn hair bouncing around her shoulders and cascading down her chest. "'Too Close' for the hole is a lot further away than with the littler ones."

She frowns at 'no slaves' and the revelation that she's been met before. Stares, with slit eyes much like her twin, then nods. "We're not two princesses in a tower being guarded by a dragon, and we're not a valiant Knight of the Black Rose. We're the Mayor, her assistant, and their trusty work-beast, our swiftclaw. The re-founders of this town. Once it is cleared."

"No slaves, even if they're cute." Yolo says, still staring at Patch.

The swiftclaw does nothing but glare into the unfocused distance.

Patch snorts, a short-laugh huffed at Yolo. "Do the bards dream of singing sheep?" she asks in a playful tone, shaking her head. "No, I think not. I much prefer to keep some things intact if I am to be working. Mostly myself." declining close seat.

"Always something strange going on. Though it's a pleasure to have all your names, but... I guess I am going to have to see all of this for myself." the talk boggling her mind with questions. "So there were slaves? This isn't the first incident here?" her glance fixating on Jinx. "You.. at least seem knowledgeable about all this. I think I will let you take the lead."

Stjepan nods to the cleric with a grin, "It has." He rumbles a question. "So, what works against the flesh then? Healing magic?"

"No. No slaves here. No carefully curated collection of well trained kobolds." Retzi says, before she is interrupted by a large rumble from the swiftclaw. She sighs, "Right, right, let it go. Inhale. Exhale. No Patch, this was a human and wood-elf town."

She moves and leans against the window sill, crossing her arms and gazing at Stjepan. "Channeling does, the hurting kind. Pounding it with a mallet seems to work pretty well, if you hit it hard enough and often enough that it is completely flattened out."

Yolo meanwhile, waves at Patch and the chair again, holds her arms outstretched to indicate the seat and perhaps the 'impossible' grabbing distance, despite it's nearness. "We have tea!"

Retzi twists to look in Seyardu's direction, "Can you do that? Channel Pain? That's not usually an Althean ability, is it?"

The cleric stops, and rather uncharacteristically growls underneath their breath for a moment. "Ah, I see. I hope it will continue that way, for your sakes." Seyardu notes, leaving that be. "I do not harm with my ability to channel energy, no. That is what the weaponry is for, though it seems it will not function. Nor will most of my magic capable of hurting them, most likely."

"It was from another time, that I suppose should be left in the past. Nothing to do with what is happening here now." She explains to Patch.

"Aryia and I have been to the center of town and looked into the descent." Jinks explains after studying the women (and mount) for some duration. He leans back and gestures at Seyardu, Merek. "It's a thing for the tenured, hell-and-back brand of us 'goldfish,'" he drawls with a smirk.

"We were chaperoning at the time and it made no sense to split as the throng piled in. The yrchblood woman was already upset about her horse being swarmed into cheapmeats.

"Better to get acclimated on this visit," he tells Patch with a shallow shrug. "Prepare for diseases and rally some trusted allies. Ready blunt instruments and take into account the creatures lack eyes if any bring spells." He waves a glittering hand around vaguely and adds, "The threat is relatively contained for now.

"... and I wonder if the mayor has reward ready for her aquarium?" Jinks wonders as he idly pats his phantom steed. "Or an idea as to what the town will become when rebuilt?"

Retzi nods along as Jinks explains. "Right. I didn't think you were ready to go. You look... disorganized. Oh, and Jinks is right. I've seen a few animals escape after the Flesh grabs them, and they kind of... don't do well and don't make it far. Kind of get overcome by boils, and bubules of their own flesh, and then... just die."

"As for rewards and planning..."

She's interrupted by Yolo, who leaves the back window to pop out beside Retzi at the side. "Brothels! And Graveyards. That's the most maximally efficient use of space. People can sleep in the brothels until they die and then they can sleep in the Graveyard. Merchants can just travel through and..."

Retzi interrupts Yolo this time. "We are not building a town of only brothels and tombs. We want respectable villagers, and that's completely absurd. This one had a big covered market, that seemed to be the centre of town. We should rebuild that."

"A nice house for yourselves." Yolo says, plucking at Retzi's hair.

"Well of course." Retzi says, tugging her hair back, "after we build some things for the people."

Both look at the group of adventurers, and say in stereo, "But what do you think?"

"Oh wow, that is a lot of weirdness." Patch says, looking to Jinks and Seyardu. "Acclimated is... a word I don't much like. It implies a few things, usually the kind I try and avoid. " she acknowledges with a huff.

"I don't much have anything in the way of striking weapons. I tend to get by on my charm, song, and if need be -- blade." a sigh escaping Patch's lips after her words. "Another thing to add to the list." taking a mental note.

As for the offer of seat again? Patch is not having it. She's a little distrustful of the bunch, more so now that discussion has revealed a few things about prior encounters. "As wonderful as tea would be, we are the professionals. If I stopped and gabbed it would but only draw out the issue at hand." she assures, looking to Stjepan for help on this one. "My friend here, I'm sure he wants to get on with things. Yeah?"

Stjepan grins at Patch. "Sometimes, it's good to find out what's going on." He nods. "Right. Time to get a long-handled hammer."

"Well, we do want to get the town reconstruction rolling." Retzi says, with Yolo nodding, followed by a grumbling exhale from the swiftclaw, sounding ever so much like a large, over-tired dog.

As swiftclaws go, it has strikingly beautiful emerald scales, with stripes and patterns in slightly darker or brighter hues. It is also large, the way clydesdales compare to regular horses, or dire wolves to wolves.

"Since, that will take a while, and other adventurers have pointed out we don't know how towns work." Retzi stares at Stjepan, sizing him up, "Stjepan looks pretty tough but I think you're going to need more, to tackle what's down the hole. Swords aren't going to work, and magic is a little sketchy around the Flesh. Sometimes it doesn't work."

"I think that you are making too much work for someone already feeling stretched thin." The cleric states simply. "As now I will need to drop by often enough to ensure your honesty about your statements. But that is the price to pay."

"And that is not to mention the work before us already. At least we have some idea of what dangers are there, and I can prepare accordingly. I would need a day at most, plus whatever time is needed for everyone else."

Seyardu is starting to understand over zealous paladins who just kill evil where it stands. Ensuring proper rehabilitation is a lot of work.

"Preparation would be good. That's an option?" Patch says, a bit of excitement flooding back into her tone. "Yeah, I don't know if I have what is needed to do anything to help. My magics are more for supporting, and keeping people from death." her shoulders shrugged. "The desire is to help. I just need to find out how." she reasons to the others.

"We will," Jinks agrees on the topic of needing-more. "I know a Silver Guard who might be persuaded..." His head tilts to one side as he regards Stjepan up and down. He sucks at his teeth.

"Anyway. Don't worry yourself, Seyardu. I'll be out plenty; a good excuse to away from the warden is welcome." If the makari cleric trusts the gnome to oversee this sort of thing. The horse turns, trotting in a tight circle as it ascends back into the air-- perhaps having found an invisible staircase.

"I think I saw what's left of an orchard... maybe farms with a little roadside town for trade." Jinks tosses his chin north past the mayor's temporary accommodations. "... but every town needs a graveyard-- and brothels are cleaner than alleyways."

The fancy little man is leaning over and calling down now from higher up in the air. "We'll see it done. Just be smart until then. Certain death, so on and so forth." He glances towards the center of town and frowns. "I'm going to see if that hole has another end...

"Coyote laughs," he grunts before the float steed gallops across the drifting ash.

Stjepan nods as he watches Jinks advance towards the town. "For all of that.. he's got a point about the Silver Guard. Seems like little's going to be solved here, though. The job needs more people, I think." A nod to Patch. "And welcome that support is, too."

"Well we tried to handle it ourselves but a whole lot of fire didn't do the job." Retzi says.

"Maybe she means we're stretching ourselves too thin."

"No, pretty sure she meant herself." Retzi says, looking at Seyardu, "Right? This is all a bother? You don't have to. I mean, all we're offering is some coins for a chance to die horribly in the dark."

"That's what adventurers live for!"

"Of course, Yolo. Of course." Retzi rubs at her forehead, "Yes Patch, you have time to prepare. We're keeping an eye on it. Yaree will drag us out of here if it gets dangerous."

The pair listen as Jinks shares his thoughts, leaning out and to the sides to see past the awning, watching as he ascends. It's Yolo who claps, "Yessssssss! Brothelssss!"

Retzi is more sombre, "Be careful Jinks." She leans back inside, musing to no one, "I don't know which I dread more, finding out if that is the mouth, or the anus, or it doesn't have one."

The swiftclaw's head turns at the mentions of 'Silverguard'.

"Yes, more preparation if possible, within reason. The more aid, the better." Seyardu agrees. "If there are others you might bring, then that is a good use of time."

"Orchards do not grow quickly however, but if any trees remain, perhaps the druids could restore them." The cleric suggests. "As for not bothering, no, that is not a possibility in the slightest. If anything were to happen, there would be no forgiveness for myself, or for you." The finally answer firmly. "I do not live for coin, I live for helping others."

"Yup! Us too." Yolo says enthusiastically, punching the air. "We're gonna build this town!"

"I mean, I can't say anything about the idea of brothels. I guess men need to let off some steam too." Patch says, a pierced ear given a light flick as she sighs. "Though, could we not talk of the things orifices? At least not so closely in sentences to a brothel. Scandalous it is, as I don't like mixing the gross with the salacious." a hand rising to tug at her shirt idly. "It seems I was wise to not take that seat, some perversion is beyond even me." a tease, and chastisement.

"So we prepare, and meet back.... that's at least a plan." Patch admits, turning to Stjepan with a smile. "And thank you. It's good to feel appreciated!"

"Even purple worms gotta--" Stjepan breaks off at Patch's request, nodding to her with a broad grin "It's something of a plan -- and you're welcome, o prim inspiration."

Yolo simply pouts, staring at Patch.

Retzi moves inside, reappearing at the back window and leaning against its frame, opposite the one she was using on the side window. "Yes. Prepare, meet back. If you're heading back, here's a letter you can give to the Coach to deliver." She holds out an envelope addressed to 'Quest Master: Explorer's Bar'

Patch does feel her smile falter at Yolo's pout. All good and well, even with some warning of their natures, she does seem to feel bad to have declined so hard. Which lasts about as long as it takes for her to notice the letter, stepping to snatch it from Retzi with a quick pluck. That has her smiling wide once again. She takes it towards Seyardu, offering it to the woman. "I think you seem like the most trustworthy of us to deliver this." she says seriously, a glance spared for Stjepan from over her shoulder. "Yes, all things do! I am not here to learn biology, Stjepan. Not... messy gross biology anyways." a narrow of eyes, and a faux angry stare. "Prim? I.... HEY!" her realization of his joke striking her. "At least the inspiration is correct."

Stjepan sketches a bow. "Striking at the heart of things." He's still grinning, and shrugs happily. He nods to Seyardu. "You've got it, then?" Just to confirm.

"I do not know what men have to do with brothels however, but, while I do not think them critical infrastructure, I can understand them." The cleric shrugs. "It is much easier to stop any illnesses before they spread when properly managed, and not in the alleys, as Jinks put it so eloquently."

The sith-makar nods and takes the letter, stowing it in one of the pockets on their satchel that seemed too small to fit the entire thing in. "Yes, I will make sure that it is delivered. I will make sure the guild is aware and prepared for my arrival firsthand."

Merek follows along and listens, though it seems that for the moment, there will not be a lot of the input from him. He does take the time to relax.

"Okay!" Retzi claps her hands, "Well we'll be here. Watching. Waiting."

"Not having Tea." Yolo grumbles.

"Well not having tea with anyone besides ourselves." The autumn hued mayor smiles. "Safe trip." She shouts at the carriage, "Good Trip Coach!"

The pair watch from the rear window, mirror images holding up each side of the frame, complimentary colours also, and both waving as the adventurers load up in the coach, and 'Coach the Coach' issues his cheerful warnings and turns around. As he rumbles away, but before the vehicle is out of earshot, a third feminine voice is heard.

Deeper, more vibrant, from a more powerful throat, it might not be heard over the rumble of the carriage. It may blend in to the sound of the wheels, but a discerning ear would hear a criticizing complaint, "I wish we would have picked a scenario where I wasn't the silent steed. It's a lot to commit to this role when you two won't focus."

"Well, maybe we can pretend you're a smart animal companion. Or it's a spell." Yolo suggests.

"Or a familiar." Retzi adds.

To which there is no reply.
