So Wrong it's Wight

The woods surrounding you are cold and bleak and empty, the rain hisses down as it has all day and there are no signs of life. You all agreed to be sent by magic into the edges of Dragonier to capture at least one Wight still moving if possible, the Vardaman who hired you agreed that this might be very difficult but the danger would be worth it if her theories were born out.

She spoke passionately. "I believe that every wight is tied to the rest in some fashion, by bringing one back with the spark of undeath I'll be able to test this. Maybe we can track them, perhaps even reverse the curse at a distance! This is all speculative of course, but think of the advantages if it works!" Thus you find yourselves out here looking for undead who seem very scarce, and dusk is approaching fast. Once you catch one you have only to return to the clearing where you arrived, but that is looking further and further distant.

Elessa shivers at the cold of this place. Dragonier, back again, and more Wights, great. Place is eventually going to give her nightmares. "Alright, so how do we find one of these things and can we make it quick? I rather be out of here much sooner than any sort of later."

Verna is more than eager to participate in this particular endeavor. As a Mourner, she wishes to further the Harsh Lady's temple and the escort of the lost to their proper judgement. As an academic and researcher, the possibility of interconnectivity and a mass cure is titilating. All of this is enough to tolerate even the horrid weather. There is also the dire threat of the wights themselves, of course. "With so many reported, it should not be difficult to locate one. My concern is that we discover far more in a small area."

Schneider is here and looking vaguely interested. Here and there, a breeze stirs his long platinum hair, though those zephyrs are fewer and fewer. Though it seems to be more related to his mood than the actual wind in the area, or lack thereof. His hair moves independently in any event. He grumbles at the mud. "Who can track anything through this, I don't know."

Colrick pulls the hood of his cloak over his head to shield him from the rain. The thunderbelcher is retrieved from his back and promptly loaded by touch alone as his eyes scan his surroundings. "They are smart, aren't they? Not like the mindless shambling ones, yes?" he asks of his companions.

Aurala doesn't like being out here, but then she is out here and she has a job to do. SHe looks around, "It just takes practice, but yes I am not good at tracking." she says and shakes her head a bit.

You paged Vennan with '@emit The woods surrounding you are cold and bleak and empty, the rain hisses down as it has all day and there are no signs of life. Thus you find yourselves out here looking for undead who seem very scarce, and dusk is approaching fast. Once you catch one you have only to return to the clearing where you arrived, but that is looking further and further distant.'

Schneider wonders, "If they're smart and aggressive, wouldn't it make more sense to wait in one place and simply draw attention to ourselves?" He yawns. "Anyhow, this is boring. Let's go back to the site, make a nice big fire, and see if they come after us." Despite the cold and wet, he looks neither damp nor uncomfortable.

Verna exhales a sigh at the lack of success so far. "I can detect the presence of the undead, but the range is far too limited. We can expect that any others encountered to likely be so. The darkness will notmake our search any less difficult." Her hood turns to Schneider at his suggestion. "That may bring dozens or hundreds. It is a risk."

"I would vastly prefer having the initiative on this." Colrick replies as he shakes some of the rain off his cloak. "Hoping that the group that finds us isn't too much for us to handle? A plan hinged on hope is not much of a plan." he counters, pausing to turn about and squint at the darkening horizon. "If we can find them, before they find us, then we can dictate the flow of events more easily; possibly lure a few away into a trap."

From the damp wood you detect the first signs of movement you've seen all day, unfortunately it's from the treetops. There is a rattling of branches and wet dead leaves and a winged form lands in one tree. It's certainly undead but the hideously elongated legs clutch at a branch and the composite longbow it wields speak to some other variety than a wight. Regardless, it's there now and it looks like it's decided that you are all prey.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "It looks down (and across) at all of you and picks out Aurala as the biggest prey. It shoots at her."

Vennan has been here all along. Honest. Once he spies that undead creature menacing them from up above, his eyes narrow. He draws his bades and begins leaping from branch to branch in the way only an extremely agile elf can manage, continuing to ascend until he's right at the creature's level.

The ghastly undead hunter focusses on Aurala as the biggest and most dangerous prey and starts pulling rib-bones from its own body, each becoming an arrow of bone that it shoots down at her. Two sink into her and the other two just miss and it hisses in disappointment.

Hassan wakes from his drug induced nap from the back of the small cart he is curled up in the back of, pulled by a rented mule and guided by another intrepid adventurer. "Ugh, this place looks horrible." He mumbles as he climbs out of the wagon, rubbing the narcotic-induced sleepiness from his eyes. Once arrows start flying, he spots the undead target and runs over to Aurala, weaving a spell of might as he does so. He lays a hand on her back, patting it. "There you go, commence murdering."

GAME: Schneider rolls 1d4: (2): 2

Aurala growls as she is hit. She looks up at the one in the tree, "Get out of the tree." since she can't chop down the tree, she pulls her bow and draws it back trying to shoot the thing that shot her.

It is now Elessa's turn! Verna is next!

Schneider nods to Verna. "Well, if we attract so many, we will have the best choice and can choose the one that most suits us." He shrugs to Colrick, and says, "Plans are overrated anyhow. And they seldom work, so why bother?" He points upwards and says, "See what I mean?" With a wide grin, he begins chanting. It's a sort of spooky gibberish mixed with Jotunn words describing spirits and seeking. As he clenches a fist, blood seems to ooze out from it, sliding off and forming a ghostly fist next to his own hand, but floating in the air. It quickly fades into intangibility, but there is an air of doom about it.

<OOC> Elessa says, "Let's see, it's still up in the tree. But it looks like one can possibly stand up there if they can climb, right?"

Verna looks up and finally notices the creature in detail despite the dim. "It is a Baykok, a hunter. Be wary of its scream! It will immobilize you!" She warns the others following recognition. She then gestures and verbalizes, conjuring a small hand-shaped field of force into existence at her side.

"You're a rather rubbish archer. Go beat that thing into submission so we can go home." The Veyshanti alchemist grumbles, producing a small feather. With precise intonation of eldritch and several complicated gestures, he crafts a spell of flight, imparting the gift on the nearby giantess.

Schneider watches his allies climb up towards the enemy, and how well that works out, as he chants again. "Fire of spirits! Fire from The Fire! Incinerate this restless spirit! Reach Out and Touch Someone!" A swirl of flame fills a fist-shaped ... shape next to him, the invisible hand from a moment ago, then quickly streaks towards the archer. One finger extended, it surges upwards, extending into a sort of arrow shape. It streaks by the monster, though, who is much more agile than Schneider had planned on.

Elessa continues to move and onto the branch with a good flip. Sticking to it well, she draws her rapier and thrusts out at it, getting into a good position as she does so. However, it must be rather quick because she misses it. Thankfully her balance is such she doesn't over reach and doesn't risk falling from the limb of the tree.

Colrick drops a cloud of smoke at his feet while the Baykok clashes with his comrades up in the branches, but during the melee he notices its eyes continuing to track his movement, frustrating his efforts.

Aurala roars as it rips into her like that. "You shouldn't have done that, that just made me angry, no one likes me when I am angry." she says and then moves forward and then slashes, once across its body, then brings the flaming black back a second time, and whips it around even for a third attack. Pieces of it are falling out of the tree, as she pants a bit from the exhertion.

Off in the distance you hear some howling, somewhat like wolves but not nearly as natural. Perhaps if you were closer it might have a magical effect attached but at this range it's just spooky in the gathering dusk.

<OOC> Aurala says, "going to use my renewed vigor and then end rage how do I end rage? command wise is there a way?"

Schneider scowls as the thing avoids his attack spell. It's not supposed to do that! He chants a mystic syllable again, and the fist streaks back towards the creature as he redirects it, but before it can make contact, Aurala has destroyed it. The fist-shaped swirl of flame comes back to him and hovers at his side while he looks for more enemies, grinning widely. "That was very impressive!" he says to the fiery flying giantborn. He peers into the gathering dusk. "I hear a spooky sort of howling," he says, smiling. "Shall we go see if it's what we're here for?"

Elessa just sort of stops as she watches Aurala tear into the creature and nods. "Good job," she smiles and puts her rapier away. She starts her way down out of the tree in order to catch up with the others. She pauses though as she hears the howling, frowning and makes it a quick descent so she's not caught up there in a tree by anything else. "Where was that coming from?"

Aurala lands back on the ground. She focuses and her wounds seem to stop bleeding and heal, at least a little bit. She still isn't looking too good. She took the brunt of the damage. The flames go out though she holds onto her sword still, looking towards the howling. "Thanks." she says to those telling her good job.

GAME: Hassan rolls knowledge/religion: (7)+10: 17

"Are wights supposed to howl? If not, I recommend we leave before they get here." Colrick says as he re-arranges his alchemical gear within his cloak.

Hassan sighs as he inspects his shoes, doing his best to cantrip the muck off. "I don't suppose that was what we came to drag back?" He mutters

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Wights don't howl that you know of."

Verna frowns. "No, we were not so fortunate. Is anyone in dire need of restoration?"

Vennan makes his way down the tree, still moving stiffly and quite injured by his encounter with the undead creature. "That was... unpleasant." He says with a grimace.

Aurala looks a bit weak still but that might just be coming down from her rage, "I could use some." she says and shrugs a bit.

Schneider belatedly draws his greatsword. A large steel afterthought, though now that we have some warning, he begins to chant a different spell. "Spirits of Blood, Spirits in my blood. Blood of life, your strength and power fill me!" His veins bulge for a moment, throbbing at his neck and temple, up and down his arms and legs and across his chest, and then things seem to return to normal. He looks to the others who need healing, and says, "I can not do that for others. But I have a potion, if that will help?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Essentially at this point you have a short while to regroup, at least 15 minutes."

<OOC> Verna will tend to the wounded with Cure Moderate.

The howls in the distance continue sporadically but don't seem to be getting nearer. They are coming from what you believe is deeper into Dragonier.

<OOC> Verna says, "Aurala, then Vennan. I will utilize a Pearl of Power level 2 to recast for Vennan."

Verna moves to Aurala and Vennan, in turn. At each, she calls upon Her Lady to delay their journey to judgement as they re not yet prepared. Empowered by her Matron, Verna closes a portion of their wounds.

Aurala dips her head, "Thank you, that is much appreciated." she still has some wounds but is looking a lot better.

Schneider eyes the direction that the howls are coming from. "Are the things we're looking for," he wonders to the group at large, "likely to howl like that?"

Timestop by Ssylrath has left.

Hassan takes a moment to lead the mule-driven cart around backwards. "I'm guessing those little monsters are what we came for. I have some shackles if one of you would like to hold one down so we can get out of this horrid place." He fishes into his satchel, producing first a wineskin, from which he takes a long pull. Then a box of snuff from which he takes a pinky nail's measure of and snorts with a brisk shudder. And then finally a pair of suspiciously oily and perfumed shackles with velvet padding on the inside, complete with a simple lock.

"oh, and I suppose I should protect myself." He adds, whipping up a simple conjuration of unseen armor.

GAME: Hassan casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 6 DC: 17

"I apologize that I cannot do more," Verna explains, "but I prefer to retain some aid as we have only begun." She turns towards Schneider and Hassan. "Wights are not known to howl. I do not believe that they are what we seek. Nor do I believe that padded shackles will suffice."

Colrick looks to Verna after she's done tending to wounds, listening to her advice. "Alright then, I propose we find some place to rest for the night, rather than stumbling around in the dark." he suggests.

Vennan is still wincing, but nods to Verna with an understanding expression. "It would be unwise to expend all your energy now with the unknown ahead." He looks to Colrick. "Agreed."

Schneider arches a brow at Hassan's padded shackles, then laughs with amusement. "You are such a kind jailer, to provide such comfortable restraints!" He looks over at Colrick, and when Verna explains, he reluctantly agrees, "If it is not what we seek, then let us rest a while and search more tomorrow."

Verna now nods. "I agree that we should locate a suitable place to rest, and quickly. Once camp is prepared, and we will rest, I will offer further aid to the injured."

Dusk is gathering and the rain still has not let up. The howls are dropping off now in the distance but the woods are starting to feel if anything even more menacing and dark. The small clearing you are discussing in is suddenly alive with, well, dead things as a number of wights bound forward out of the undergrowth baring their long teeth. Behind the wights come what can only be undead ogres, similarly dessicated and feral, perhaps also wights or something similar.

It is now Hassan's turn! Wights is next!

<OOC> Hassan says, "How far away from me?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "20-30' ish."

Verna is nearly clawed by one of the fast moving creatures. She steps quickly back out of simple claw range and utilizes her knowledge of the negative plane and energy which empowers the creatures to call a morsel of negative energy to herself. She allows it to build, then alters its pitch, for lack of a better term, before releasing it to detonate in a reaction harmless to the living. To those powered by the energy, however, the misaligned energies are painful and frightening.

<OOC> Colrick drinking my Hide from Undead potion, and moving around to a flanking position that's 30' away from the regular wights.

Hassan is mid-sip from his wineskin again when the undead abominations come shambling out of the woods, ready to drain the life from the lot of us. To his credit, he avoids a spittake and after a hard swallow, he prepares another spell, tossing his wineskin into the back of the cart. Sparklies spread across four of the creatures, though only the smallest of them seem to be slowed by the incantation.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "You can pretty much 5' to hit any of several. Only one right in your face though, it's slowed too."

One of the large ogre wights turns and runs off into the woods but the other three stride forward, striking Vennan and Verna both and draining life force from them.

<OOC> Schneider says, "How are the enemies arranged? Can I 5' back and get them in a Burning Hands? (15' cone)"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "So one kill only, one really badly hit."

Aurala growls out as she is hit and feels the energy drained from her. She whispers the word to activate her boots of speed and screams out in rage as her muscles seem to expand and once more flames burst from her body to run up her arms and along her blade. She moves a little to the side and then whips her blade in turn at three wights, the smaller one that struck her is cut down and falls. She cuts deep into one of the larger wights as well, though the last strike just glances off the hide of the third.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "5' yes, burning hands... two. Size your choice."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Or one specific one."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Everyone is clustered together so targeting cones is tough."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Thrugh the sword? Can you do that?"

<OOC> Elessa says, "How many acrobatics then?"

Schneider suddenly finds himself surrounded by undead. He seems pleased. "See, I told you it would work out," he explains cheerfully as he dodges a clumsy attack. He backpedals and chants sonorously, "Spirits of Fire! Spirits heed my command, I summon you!"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Vennan! One slowed small one and one regular large one are both attacking you. Only the small is in melee though because reach."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "There are in total 2 large and 3 small in the clearing."

<OOC> Vennan says, "Can I flank on either one by me?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Only with tumbling. Past both."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "And only on the small one, the large isn't in 5' of anyone at all."

Elessa isn't going to allow these things to surround her, not when she can have an advantage. Moving quickly, tumbling past three of the wights, two of them looking particularly large, proving to be too fast for them. Once on her feet again, on the one attacking Verna, she draws her rapier and swipes at it, landing a nasty blow to it's back, causing it to fall, no longer a threat. "So which one do we keep alive again?"

<OOC> Vennan says, "So not with a 5' step?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Wait, let's say it's in reach of Aurala. But still not a 5'."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "One attacks Vennan, one attacks Schneider, the one attacking Verna turns and withdraws due to Turn Undead (finally)."

Vennan really is not in a good state right now. His life energy has been sapped, and his wounds continue to plague him. But still he staggers towards the closest opponent, stabbing repeatedly.

"I will attempt to detain this one!" Verna calls out, somewhat weakly. The wound from the brute, combined with the negeative energy's effect about her have left her weakened. She calls upon the Harsh Lady to focus Her eyes upon one and then marks the one with a touch.

The two remaining ogre wights flail their fists but fail to connect with their wily targets.

Colrick kicks the potion bottle away in disgust when he sees a wight bearing down on him, but still has enough time to sidestep it's swipe. Continuing that movement, he gets some breathing room and hurls one of the tanglefoot bags at his attacker, rooting it to the ground. "Ha!" he laughs at his would-be attacker, gaining at least some small satisfaction.

It is now Elessa's turn! Vennan is next!

Schneider has backed off and finds the wight still coming after him, so plants his feet and holds his hand out, reaching out to place a palm on the creature, he speaks a single mystical syllable, which sounds suspiciously like "Boom," and a handful of fire erupts from his palm to wash over the creature, bathing it in uncanny flames. He laughs at it. "Ahahahahahahaha."

GAME: Verna casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 6 DC: 14

It is now Colrick's turn! Large Wights is next!

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "The one large one left is attack you, Colrick."

<OOC> Colrick says, "5' step back from it and rapid shot on the large wight."

Verna, having succeeded in delaying the one, and noting that another is entangled, now focuses on her own defense. She conjures a form-fitting field of protective energy about her person.

It is now Aurala's turn! Schneider is next!

The one remaining large wight, mostly unharmed, steps forward and completely misses Colrick again.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, Aurala is... delaying. Twice."

Colrick has to cut off his victory speech early as one of the ogre wights approaches. His thunderbelcher is quickly brought on target, scoring a glancing shot on the first, then unfortuitously seizing up.

It is now Schneider's turn! Elessa is next!

<OOC> Schneider says, "What's the score just now?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "One large doing fine, two small debuffed."

<OOC> Schneider says, "I will try and finish off the one in front of me with the greatsword. Using Arcane Strike."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "If you can figure out a way to pin one as a group and pull it off, I'll call the fight. Fair?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Roll."

GAME: Schneider rolls 1d20+8: (9)+8: 17

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "That's the staggered one, hit."

<OOC> Schneider says, "I didn't know I had a choice of 2."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "I'll give you the choice now. :)"

<OOC> Schneider says, "Whichever one I hit last round, if I can?"

<OOC> Aurala mutters

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Aurala!"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, Schneider kills the staggered entangled one. That leaves one of each size, and Aurala gets two rounds of actions."

<OOC> Aurala says, "can I 5' to the large one?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Nope, takes a move for that one. Will provoke without reach too. But you do get two full rounds of actions. :)"

<OOC> Aurala says, "the smaller one though is within reach?"

Schneider considers the smoldering, staggered, entangled wight for a moment. Hair blowing back and showing a good profile, he grips his greatsword in both hands, flames leaping up and down the blade, and he drives that flaming blade into the wight, ending it with a fiery hiss.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Yes, but it's the last one left and you have to capture one."

<OOC> Aurala says, "will charge the big one then with power attack"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "It'll take an AoO."

GAME: Ssylrath rolls 8: (8)+8: 16

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "With rage that hits, yes?"

<OOC> Aurala says, "only cause of the charge"

<OOC> Aurala says, "but yes"

GAME: Ssylrath rolls 1d6+5: (1)+5: 6

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "So, -1 damage leaves 5+5 from the negative level."

<OOC> Aurala nods

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Take your charge."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Just kill because of the gunshot earier. :)"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "What do you want to do with your second round? There'sone left, it's horribly wounded and still slowed, and if you can pin it you win."

Aurala growls a bit and then charges after the larger of the wights remaining, and whips her greatsword with a furious blow that fells the creature.

<OOC> Aurala says, "will move to pin it"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "That will provoke, yes? For the grapple?"

GAME: Ssylrath rolls 3: (13)+3: 16

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "It will miss regardless unless you charge it for some reason."

<OOC> Aurala says, "yes.I didn't charge"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Make your CMB check then to grab it."

GAME: Aurala rolls cmb+1-2: (12)+17+1+-2: 28

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "You have it grabbed. You can try to pin in subsequent rounds. Back to our normal initiatives."

It is now Elessa's turn! Vennan is next!

<OOC> Elessa says, "So there's one left..."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Elessa! You can, um, aid Aurala's defense against it? She has the last one grabbed. You'd be essentially starting to tie it up."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "There is just the one."

<OOC> Elessa says, "Could I take the -4 to try and do non-lethal to it? To just knock it out?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Heck, I'm willing to call this if you all are. You will tie it up, it's a foregone conclusion at this point."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Undead don't take nonleathal."

<OOC> Elessa says, "Oh, of course. Dur"

<OOC> Vennan says, "Seems like we've got this wrapped up."

<OOC> Verna only know realizes that she could have cast Animate Rope last action.

<OOC> Elessa says, "Yeah, it does."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay! I'll pose the end of the fight and conclusion-ish."

<OOC> Aurala says, "willing to call it."

<OOC> Colrick says, "Me too."

<OOC> Schneider says, "Sounds good."

Between all the rope and helping hands you get the final Wight wrapped up so tightly it looks like a mummy. It is bundled into the wagon and you all make sure not to touch it any more as you head back to the rendezvous point where your employer promised healing and restorations as necessary. There are advantages to working for Clerics it seems. The wight squirms and hisses but is unable to make any headway and you have completed your objective. Now to try to get dry.

Timestop by Ssylrath has left.

Hassan has connected.

<OOC> Hassan says, "Blech. Are we all dead yet?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "You won. :)"

<OOC> Hassan , totes badass.
