Runes in Rune

From Tenebrae
Jump to navigation Jump to search

You have all been collected by the Church of Vardama to investigate some ruins on the edge of Rune that are rumoured to contain a rare flower that is used in certain powerful rituals. Unfortunately those who go in don't come out, and the locals believe them to be haunted. You have been asked to find out and bring back some of the flowers, Rainbow Delphiniums.

The stern-looking woman who hired you and provided transport to the area via a small airship warned you to stay on your toes and keep your eyes out for traps and other dangers. "The wizard who built this tower and died when it was destroyed was somewhat mad, he liked experimenting on people and we believe that this is what caused his demise. All we really know is that one day he stopped communicating and people stopped coming out, but we know he had a Rainbow Deliphinium flowerbed sustained by magic and we hope it has survived. Good luck."

You are now standing outside a half-crumbled tower with one door fallen out and only darkness visible inside.

Tak seems none to suprised by the information they got on the trip here. "Yes, mad experimenting wizards. I blame the arcanists society, they must be doing something to drive all these wizards mad. Some flaw in thier teaching or whatever." He looks around at the others here, gesturing towards the door. "By all means, someone take point."

Kiroth takes a deep breath as he calls about the power of his banesight. He starts to look around, "Or perhaps it is the mad ones that we only hear about." He continues to look around and he has his sword and shield out, "I will take point if no one else minds."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Banesight shows nothing out of the ordinary here. Inside may be different."

<OOC> Schneider says, "How about detect magic?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Same."

Verna finds the target of their task both an intellectual curiosity and a potential threat. As for the wizard who formerly occupied the tower, she both regrets that he enables assumptions applied to many in the craft, yet also finds that the potential accumulated knowledge likewise valuable. "Madness is a failing of the individual, not the whole. If his mind was too weak, he should not have delved into powers to which he could not acclimate. I wish to travel near the forefront to aid whomever chooses to travel first." Which appears to be Kiroth, most likely.

Schneider listens to the explanation, and takes another look. A word to summon spirits of magic, and a quiet conversation tells him no more, and he offers a shrug to the rest of the group. "Nothing clearly magical out here, in any event," he declares. He nods about Kiroth taking point, drawing his greatsword. Flames leap and dance along the edge, with a corona of raw magic. He nods at what Verna says after some thought. "Yes. And inhaling fumes from strange magical potions all day is not at all at fault."

<OOC> Kiroth says, "I will keep bane sight on until further notice"

Tak finds a spot in the middle of the group, being he fills a supportish type role. "Well, you'd think there was a test, its magic. Here, touch this orb, if it glows red, it means your going to go insane from magic and we can't teach you. You know, for the good of all."

Kiroth looks over his shoulder as he moves towards the front and towards the entrance, "Madness is not the sole providence of wizards or those that use the arcane, it is just more devastating when it strikes one with vast power." He says as he'll continue to look around.

Tak chuckles "Yes, but there must be a test you know, some kind of divinition, like, I forsee your future, you will live in a tower and experiment on people and turn them into chickens....something like that."

"The driven and determined are most suited to the profession," Verna notes as she follows Kiroth. "Some may eventually prove determined to drive themselves too far."

The ruined tower when you enter is in shambles, there's some long-destroyed furniture; a quick search turns up nothing of value. A stairway up is blocked by the remains of the roof but the stairs down underground are passable with a little climbing over rubble. It actually looks like someone cleared a rough path at some point, you are not the first ones here. Everything is quiet.

<OOC> Schneider says, "BTW casting False Life now, since the duration is hours."

GAME: Schneider casts False Life. Caster Level: 5 DC: 15

With a grunt, Teppus is is eyeing Tak and not commenting. Rather, he's bringing up the rear. In his hand rests the haft of his glaive. "Let's get this done with," he agrees.

GAME: Schneider rolls 1d10+5: (3)+5: 8

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "We'll apply it when/if a timestop happens."

Schneider looks around the ruined tower, but fails to find anything interesting. As an afterthought, he recalls a bit of protective magic. "Spirits of fire, spirits of blood! Hear my will!" It trails off into something that sounds like Jotun, but without meaning. His body bulges, veins in his legs, arms, and chest bulging like rats under his skin for a moment, and then he seems normal again.

Kiroth moves towards the rough path, "Here is a path, perhaps we should follow it." He looks over his shoulder at Schneider, "Well they know that we are here now." He looks to the other, "Stay here or follow the path, the way up is blocked."

Tak shrugs "Anyway is fine with me, it will obviously lead to some evil experiment that will try to eat us, and perhaps succede. Ohh fate, you are such a cruel mistress."

The path down is quite rouch but with care you can pick out a path. The walls are lined with everburning torches every few feet so at least the light is good. At the bottom of the winding stair you enter the remains of a library, the walls are lined with bookshelves sadly water damaged now and there is a table and easy chair in the middle of the room.

You paged Kiroth with 'Detect Evil shows the presence of evil in the room.'

Kiroth mms as he looks at the books, "Shame about the books, there might be something of value we can learn. Although don't young women press flowers into books to preserve them, perhaps that is what the wizard did and we could find one of those flowers with in books." He sweeps his gaze around and he raises his hand with his sword in it, "Hold up, something evil is in this room." He starts to concentrate on it.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Can I get perception checks please?"

Schneider makes his way down, his hair only swirling slightly in a breeze seems to surround only him. The lighting is appreciated, and he smiles, "I see it must have been a human wizard, by the number and frequency of torches." He ignores the books and makes his way towards the easy chair, though he pauses as Kiroth speaks up about something evil.

Verna sees not reason to remain in the ruined foyer and states as much. As they descend, she also makes a practical point to conjure a protective field of force about her person. Possibly just in time.

Tak points to the chair "Quick, slay the chair, it must be a mimic." He of course doesn't sound serious.

"Ghosts. Great. I hate ghosts," says Teppus, bluntly as he advances on one. Though he tries to keep his eyes averted, he does manage ot catch a painful glimpse of the ghosts and grimaces in pain. Still, he manages to rip through ectoplasm with the tip of his bladed staff.

<OOC> Tak says, "Totally close my eyes. Move action: Inspire Courage +2, and casting Haste."

Schneider looks on for just a moment, then decides this is probably a bad thing to look at. He closes his eyes completely. He holds his blade in one hand and poses dramatically while chanting, "Spirits of war, spirits of fire. Guide my blade where sight does not go." Then he begins to speak, his words magically infused with his special bardic voice. "Ghosts, psh, this is nothing, you all can handle this, I mean, its not like its Heth, now that was something, I can barely remember that due to the panic and need to change my trousers."

Kiroth focuses on the ghost as he continues to try to avoid it's gaze, but to attack he has to look. He slams his blade into the ghost as he smites it. He whirls around and slashes again at the ghost hurting it badly.

<OOC> Teppus says, "Yep."

Verna closes her eyes as she once more calls a morsel of negative energy to herself. This time, its nature is altered slightly before it is released in a burst. Harmless to the living, but potentially painful to the unliving. In this instance, it proves not so much so to these particular ghosts.

Schneider has stepped back and found out that his area effect spell was even less effective than his blade. So he begins his chant of insight, seeking the insight of spirits once again. Chanting his invocation, he exhorts the spirits, "Lead me to the heart of the enemy!" His motions become slow and deliberate, and he no longer seems to be relying on mundane sight.

It is now Verna's turn! Teppus is next!

Kiroth takes the gaze from the other even though he tries to avert his eyes. He hits the same spot as before and his sword rips through the ghost destroying it. He nods to Tak, "Thank you Tak."

Trying to fight while keeping your eyes off the targets is hard. Really hard.

Teppus is havng a difficult time with this. Swing, swing, swing goes the glaive. WHiff, whiff, whiff is the sound it actually makes.

Verna's knowledge of the undead is not the same as any practical experience in combatting the same in a physical manner. Her reach is limited, and averting her eyes does not aid matters. She does attempt to take advantage of her accelarted state, but both of her flails at the adjacent trapped spirit fail.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Teppus, attacks? All three can hit."

The one remaining ghost turns on Teppus in retaliation for his strikes, reaching out and touching him with its corrupting essence.

It is now Schneider's turn! Tak is next!

"Down you go," roars Teppus, bringing his glaive to bear twice more. He's taking advantage of his strength of arms and just /striking/ them again and again. He seems to be a little restrained in his use of more divine powers, but so far, it seems to be working for him.

<OOC> Schneider says, "One bad guy left?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Yes."

<OOC> Schneider says, "I will reach out and Whack him with True Strike. Eyes closed, of course."

<OOC> Tak says, "This will be the second round of lingering. I'm going to hit Teppus with the CLW wand."

GAME: Tak rolls 1d8+1: (2)+1: 3

GAME: You damaged Teppus for -3 points. 29 remaining.

It is now Kiroth's turn! Verna is next!

The bard continues to...well, do not very much. He moves over and taps Teppus with the wand. "Be heaaaled!" he calls out, still trying not to look at ghosts. "Now someone kill it.....again, cause, its a ghost, its already dead! Re-kill it!"

Schneider has been giving the blessing of the spirits again, it seems, bringing his blade in a slow sweep through the enemy spirit in a deliberate motion unaided by mundane sight. His flaming sword and arcane power crackle, but to not snap the spirit's will nor cause it to pop from existence. The arcane speed he's gifted with is wasted as without the spiritual sight, he cannot seem to strike the ghostly monster.

<OOC> Kiroth says, "How bad does the other gost look?"

<OOC> Kiroth says, "ghost"

GAME: Tak used a Wand of Cure Light Wounds.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "One hit."

GAME: Kiroth rolls 1d8+4+5+1+1: (1)+4+5+1+1: 12

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "That destroys it too."

Kiroth turns as towards the other ghost and he strides forward to smite the other ghost as well. His sword goes through it and he destroys it. He looks around, "Who's hurt?"

Tak holds up his wand, "I actually make these, so unless you got spare healing energy, I Can tap folks a few more times. Like this." He taps his own head.

<OOC> Tak says, "1 CLW on myself"

GAME: Tak used a Wand of Cure Light Wounds.

GAME: Tak rolls 1d8+1: (5)+1: 6

Sliumping, Teppus loooks at the others. "Me," he says, "I'd like to restrain my use of my own healing abilities for the moment. WE may yet have more trouble to face."

Verna was attempting to usher the spirit on. She simply found little success in doing so. She is pleased when the final one discoporates. "I can also offer healing." She expects more positive results from that activity.

Kiroth nods to Tak, "Thank you again for the healing. Does anyone know what these are. If someone mentioned it before I did not catch it."

Tak shrugs "Ehh, if I don't heal folks, you fall down, and then I'm all alone....I'm scared of the dark." He grins a bit.

"Whoodf," says Teppus. He's leaning on the haft of his glaie and looking fairly hurt. "DOn't like thoase things," he mutters, panting.

Schneider looks around at the ghosts, or where the ghosts once were, and he laughs as Tak uses the wand. "I like that," he says with amusement. "One for me, if you please." He sighs blissfully, not caring whether he's healed by Teppus or Tak.

You paged Verna with 'You know they will be back in a few days to weeks, until their unfinished business is completed.'

As the dust settles you see that there is a door across the way, closed, and the remains of many books. There is little else here. Checking and then opening the far door reveals a room hit by bright light with many plants and flowers growing under a magical sun.

Kiroth moves into the room first and he looks around. He again turns on his banesight just incase as he looks around the plants

"They are ghosts," Verna explains. "Spirits of the fallen who are unable to journey to judgement and final reward or punishment. They are bound to this location by their deaths, and cannot be permanently destroyed by normal means. They shall reform and return until they are freed."

<OOC> Tak ends with a 30 in knowledge nature :)

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "You can;t take 20 on knowledge checks, because you can't retry."

<OOC> Tak says, "I can, bard power :)"

<OOC> Tak says, "Once a day"

Schneider peers through the door and into the brightly lit room. "Is this what we're looking for?" he asks curiously. He eyes Verna, and wonders, "Is there any way to tell what keeps them here? Surely they'd be just as happy moving on as well?"

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "You easily spot the Rainbow Delphiniums, as well as several poisonous and otherwise dangerous flowers. :)"

Tak walks into the garden pointing at plants. "This is the one we want, take these....don't eat that, its poisonus.....that one...hrm....we can smoke that one, its um...relaxing."

Kiroth frowns, "If they are poisonous and have no healing qualities we should destroy them out in the open so we do not harm ourselves."

Tak shakes his head "No no, a proper poison, sometimes can be used as a cure. We need to collect certain ones, the trick is making sure you give them to the right people."

Timestop by Ssylrath has left.

Schneider peers at poisons and plants and says after a moment, "If you can't use it to make food taste better or put into a potion, I have no use for it. Do as you will with the rest of the stuff."

"There is medicinal value possible," Verna notes, "even if it might also be utilized to harm." She also further explains to Schneider witha nod. "They would, I wish to aid them. However, it will take time a research to determine what might free their souls, and it will risk whoever returns to do so. It is not a matter to be taken lightly."

Tak sighs "Money folks, its worth money. Harvest what I suggest and we can at least make some money off the trip beyond what the guild would pay."

Whenever you eventually make it out your employer is very happy with the flowers and takes them, muttering about large-scale ritual magic against the Dran hordes. You have helped the war effort at least a little! With some luck, anyway.

Kiroth brushes off his hands after the job is done, "Well I guess we are done here."

Schneider nods to Kiroth, sheathes his blade, and yawns. "Yep. Our work here is done, then. Let's go get something to drink."
