  • Title: Really Bad Eggs
  • Emitter: Zeke
  • Characters: Aimarra, Paenitia, Seyardu, Rocky
  • Place: The farmlands of Alexandros, and the woods
  • Time: Thursday, July 22, 2021, 5:44 PM
  • Summary: The Explorer's Guild sends Aimarra, Paenitia, Seyardu and Rocky to investigate some odd goings on at a farm that had demonic chickens, or cockatrices, earlier. On the way they find a petrified farmer, evidence enough. There are cart tracks, back to Alexandria and out into the woods. They agree, the woods are probably the easier option. Aimarra is an amazing tracker, but still struggles to find the route the cart took. She is successful and they come upon a house, which seems in ruins, about to fall over. Aimarra suggests they go in through the roof, and the others concur. Climbing ensues, some struggle. Walking across the rooftop ensues, some fall. There is a hole into the attic. As Seyardu and Paenitia are helping Aimarra and Rocky, there are sounds from below and a very... spidery voice saying it must eat them. Paenitia jumps into the hole, and comes out riding a spider. A very beat up spider which attacks Seyardu, then takes a few blows from her and the others. Paenitia is struck by how much damage the creature has suffered, and influenced by Faranmidahn's love of her mount, Torrent. She attempts to calm the spider and talk her companions into leaving it alone. This seems to be going well, until she falls off. She is not eaten by a giant spider however, so everyone agrees to go to the ground and give the spider some healing magic and food. This seems to be going well, until the spider explodes. As everyone is lying in shock, or under heavy spider, several figures emerge from the house, grab Aimarra and go.

You find yourselves on the way to a farm. According to the mission briefing from the guild, the famer in question has not shown up for their usual deliveries, nor made contact with any of their neighbors in the past few days. Normally this would not be cause for concern, but as this individual had previously requested aid of the adventurer's guild only a few days prior... It seemed prudent to check on them.

Unfortunately information on that particular mission was spotty at best. Fortunately one of your party members was actually there. Seyardu's name was on the mission report.

Brown as a berry, from hair to leathers, Aimarra had answered this call. Coin was never a thing to be turned down, and she could use some new gear, so work it is. Her bow is over her back, sword at her hip, pack on her back, she looks prepared for a hike - and for trouble. She looks over at Seyardu now, quizzically. "Their information is sparse. What can you tell us?"

Also on the road, and no stranger to Aimarra and Seyardu, is a dark-skinned lucht with curly black hair, and a gigantic white peacock-andalusian. She's also a Knight, which each have been informed of on many occasions.

Her mount, Ramirez, walks with a casual gait and a clacking of his tail-feathers that is reminiscent of maracas. They are very large and hollow.

"I have lose track of the farms. There is the missing sheep farm, the goat farm. I think have been to others too. So what happen at this one, Friend Dragon?"

It was work below much of the adventurer's guild, but Seyardu was not one to turn down somebody in need whenever possible, especially one who they had been in contact with before. So she was on her way quickly once her things were packed, walking along with the others who had joined up. She nods to Paenitia, readjusting some of her armor as she walked.

"There are many farms, with many animals and plants. This one was with an older woman tending to it, mostly chickens, from what I saw. Though she was having trouble with one of her roosters, which was attacking her, and injured her leg in a peculiar way. We tracked down the rooster, in the possession of who we believed to be followers of Taara. The rooster, it was most likely a cockatrice, if what I was told by some of the more experienced adventurers after at the guild are to be believed."

The silverscale checked in at the temple of Althea afterwards to make sure the woman stopped by, and she had. Though Seyardu wasn't given much information about her care or anything like that. Patient privacy and all that.

"Peculiar way?" Aimarra sounds perplexed, but has listened as they walk, and seems to be no stranger to long journeys.

Laying right on the ground is a statue of the farmer in question, on the approach to the farmhouse. It looks in good condition.

"Halt!" The Red Knight calls suddenly. She has a good vantage point atop her Ramirez. She points with her lance, "There! A statue. Too fine to be carved, as before."

"That's what happened to the farmer," Aimarra nods her agreement, pointing towards the farmhouse where a statue of the farmer stands. "Looks like there's some in the coop, too. Cockatrices is probably right." She loosens her bow from her back as she speaks.

"The leg was not healing right. The skin was lifeless, and the wound open, but unhealing." Seyardu explains. Though she stops, looking down as Paenitia calls for a halt, and her eyes fall upon the statue, her gaze darkening. "Yes, there is something here, and if it is related to before, then it is possible it is a person. We should send people to collect them, after it is safe to do so."

"The followers from before, they were capturing the cockatrice from before, for what end, I do not know. It is possible there were more, or some other followers brought more in."

Paenitia looks at Aimarra, "I have the bow, are we engage at range?" She doesn't swap her lance out, just yet. Instead, she leans along Ramirez's neck and pets him.

"I am sorry, my love, for swing at you. Still sorry. You are the brave Ramirez." The little Lucht coos, "but I do not want you challenge the Cockatrice? The peacock and the cockatrice, it sound the name of a great story, but I do not want to see that cock fight. Ok?"

'ruaaaaaaah.' Ramirez replies weakly, sounding uncertain and still confused. He does not understand why his little mistress was angry at him.

Rocky hurries up, having been running late. The greyscale was tied up with important business and wasn't notified right away. Naps count as 'important business'. But with business concluded, the warrior caste is here to assist. "Saa, more bad rooster?"

While the others are talking, something else seems to have caught Aimarra's attention. She patiently paces the farm and the chicken coop, squatting down, examining something that only she apparently can see. "Worse," she answers Rocky without realizing, straightening to the not-exactly-impressive height of a half-sil and looking up at her companions. "Their tracks show that once they'd turned everything to stone, they were crated up and taken ... towards the city. And towards the forest." She gestures at the ground, at two separate sets of tracks, and her eyes seek out Paenitia's. "This had better not be those damn cultists."

"The statue people in crates? I hope it is them." Paenitia replies, meeting and holding Aimarra's gaze through her mask's eyeholes. She turns, looking at the two Sith'Makar, the Smiling Man mask an uneasy match to the seriousness of the warning.

"Friend dragons, I have much bad news. We find crates in a warehouse, they have statue people, like that farmer there. Many crates, many statues, of you people and you younglings."

"They have the ability turn invisible, to control the mind and make great fear." The Red Knight continues, "I act with great dishonour and attack Brave Ramirez. The dark elf with us, she say they follow Taara."

She looks back at Aimarra, "If it not them, then there are two groups stealing the people away."

"Cultists?" Seyardu asks, looking back to Aimaraa curiously. "There were cultists involved here. Only two were alive afterwards, and they have been imprisoned. They wore robes with symbols of Taara."

Though she pauses to listen to Paenitia, and she shakes her head. It was clearly a topic that caused some manner of sadness to the sith-makar.

"Petrification can be reversed, this one has heard. If they are brought to the temples, they can at least be saved. And I will not make the mistake of sparing those people again. I would ask though, did you perhaps see a Mul'niessa man, working with them?"

Rocky says, "chuffs unhappily. Looking like a statue is one thing. Becomming one is quite another. "Saa, statue go one way, statue maker other? Follow maker. Or have more statues to be followed.""

Rocky chuffs unhappily. Looking like a statue is one thing. Becomming one is quite another. "Saa, statue go one way, statue maker other? Follow maker. Or have more statues to be followed."

"I didn't. It was hard to see details of anyone in there, but if it can be reversed -" Aimarra snorts. "Clever little bastards. Petrified makes them quiet and easy to transport back to Charn. Let's go find these rogue chickens and their keepers, no doubt they'll spot someone they shouldn't. We know what happened to the farmer, though. Anything you can do, or do we just leave him?"

"A cart and straw and we will have safe transport to take him to Alexandria, where the Temple can see." Paenitia suggests, looking around, mostly at the silverscale, "Unless you have the magics that reverse."

Her attention turns to the distant farm, "The cockatrice will be hard to fight, because of the small size, and not wanting to look in the eyes. If Ramirez call, the other might come for the fight, and perhaps we shoot as it run over."

"Otherwise, I think we check the farm, ready for difficult fight, then try the tracking. I am not used to following in these woods, they are nothing like Isobar." The Dark Lucht concludes.

Aimarra says, "The farmer should be safe enough for the moment, I'd like to track the carts. The one going back to the city is worrisome, but we should check the forest."

Rocky chuffs again. "Farmer can wait. Will not notice time pass. Rock bird need stopped now."

The city is a few hours away.

"I am unsure of the next course of action." Seyardu admits, shaking the concern out of her head for the time being. There would be time to help however she could later. "If the city group is the one that went to the city, it is possible. Though it may be others which need to be tracked down. We will make a report afterwards, and can look into it ourselves. As much as I do not like leaving them there, it is less suspicious than moving the body, in case they come back while we continue on. Though if anyone is capable of contacting someone to collect them, that would be ideal. Or we collect them on our way back." She suggests.

"Into the woods." Paenitia suggests, "We find the warehouse where they keep crates. The cart going to Alexandria either going there, or someplace we cannot track on city streets."

"The forest is the better place to search, we have the woodland elf."

Aimarra favors the forest.

Forest it is!

GAME: Aimarra rolls survival+3: (18)+14+3: 35

It takes most of the day to track the cart. It's difficult after all to find one cart on a /road/. However that's not really what Aimarra is looking for as she tracks the road. She's looking for where the cart went /off/ the road. She finds it hours later, as its getting dark and leads you through the forest along an old horse trail that has some newer cart tracks over it. You stop when you see a dark house ahead.

The 'house' itself looks long abandoned. Huge spiderwebs cover the roof and the windows, bending the branches of the nearby trees toward the dilapidated little cabin. It looks really, as if one stiff breeze would tilt it over onto its side. There's a cart sitting parked next to the building, it looks empty, and does the house.

Rocky considers pushing the house over. Heck of a surprise for any cultists inside. Save that for Plan B. "Knock? Hard? With shoulder?"

Seyardu followed the road for the group, staying out of the way of those who were tracking. The thought of those in the crates still bothered her, and it shows. But finally, they reach where the cart supposedly veered off, and she glances up to those gathered.

"It is possible they moved on from here, or are simply in hiding. Either way, we should be careful moving forward. They may threaten those they brought with them. Though if we surprise them, we can avoid giving them such an option, if they are inside."

For the entirety of the hours of search, Aimarra had been silent, focused, her eyes on the ground, her bow strung but not drawn between her hands. Finally, as the sun turns towards the west, she clicks her tongue, her boots dusty. "Got you," she snarls, then leads the way to the house. Once there, though, she turns to the others. "Just because it looks empty, don't mean it is. Any of you climb? Let's try going in by upstairs."

Paenitia rides Ramirez, happily rocking from side to side with his casual gait. She trails the two Sith'Makar, who follow Aimarra. Her hippogryph's peacock tail is a giant fan that's liable to sweep the path clean as well as the brush to either side of it. It's best if that is not dividing the party.

As the day grows long, and the dark house comes into view, the options shrink. This may mean a night in the woods, or a night in that house, neither is palatible. She sits with shield ready, but Lance put away.

"I have the doubts." The Red Knight admits, "I should offer the honourable surrender, but they can control the mind, even when dead. I risk dishonour by following my vows, perhaps more than if I render them unconscious, heal them, disarm their magic, and then offer them surrender."

She shakes her head, "Ramirez does not climb well, and my armour is too heavy. It is possible, if there is a tree or big rock we can glide in, but easier to stand on his back and pull up, I think."

Seyardu shakes her head. "They are followers of Taara, and they were most likely, willingly shipping my kin off to Charn, or somewhere else vile. They think nothing of turning them to stone to do so. If they surrender, then so be it, but this one will not go out of their way to offer it." She says, unusually violent for the normally peaceful Sith-Makar. "I am not the greatest at climbing. but it may be possible, perhaps with some assistance from above, perhaps."

With their approach decided, the Red Knight and her Ivory steed approach. Quietly they drift in and nudge up against the house. She selects her cold iron warhammer and her silver sword, and sets them on her belt.

She makes her attempt. As she warned, Paenitia is not good at climbing in heavy armour, although this time she is in luck. There are handholds everywhere she needs them, solid support for her feet, places she can grip with her toes. It's almost a short step off Ramirez's back and onto an upper balcony.

She watches Aimarra and Seyardu struggle, and Rocky's astoundingly easy ascent. She's rather surprised how well he climbs.

Aimarra may be a fantastic tracker, but feathers are slippery, and she is not tall - a less-than-good purchase on the roof, and she simply can't pull herself up, dropping to the ground with a shake of the head.

For a hefty rocky lizard in armor, Rocky is shockingly nimble. The claws help with the climb, and while his armor is bulky, his minor compared to his regular mass, he carries it well. Still, some things are just surprising. Upon reaching hte top, the greyscale sets his feet firmly and strives to help those who are struggling.

Seyardu was making decent progress up the side of the building, with the aid of a few supplies she had. Though she takes a moment when using a handhold on the wall, trying to find exactly where to put her hand. Was that a shadow, or somewhere that she could hold?

And the moment of indecisiveness is long enough not to notice Aimarra's rapid decent. Luckily for her, the fall was cushioned. Unluckily for Seyardu, she was the cushion, nearly flattened on the ground.

Paenitia lies flat on the roof and extends her arm. She's small and not exactly strong enough to lift Aimarra, however she does make a good anchor and her armour is attached well enough to use for handholds.

So it helps, a little.

A second attempt, with an assist from the Lucht, and Aimarra scales the side as nimbly as a squirrel. The first attempt was probably a fluke. Next time, she'll skip the feathered Ramirez' back.

The roof is covered in spiderwebs and branches. The mixture of which makes for difficult footing without becoming entangled in /something/. Below the roof itself is an attic which one can sort of see into via a hole on the other side of the roof.

Seyardu, once she pulls herself off of the ground, takes a moment to dust herself off, and take another look at the wall in front of her. It should be doable, and seeing Aimarra make it up the second time gives her some more confidence. She pulls herself up the side, remembering previous handholds, and finding new ones as she passes before. And right near the top, she looks between the two. Likely safer to not put her full wait on the Lucht, and she grasps rocky's arm, using it to pull herself up until she could get a grip on the roof with her other hand, and clamber up over the edge.

<OOC> Zeke says, "Rocky trips, falls in the spiderwebs, and quickly becomes entangled in them. He is trapped."
<OOC> Zeke says, "Aimarra also gets trapped in the spiderwebbing, but not as stuck-stuck."

Rocky fully expects to find himself rapidly returning to the first floor, and so is very careful to step where the rafters are firmest. This is also the places where the spiders have anchored the edge of their webs the thickest. For the first little bit, this is not a problem. But as the layer rapidly builds up, the greyscale suddenly finds falling to be a secondary concern.

There's a hole in the roof, dear Paenitia, dear Paenitia. There's a hole in the roof dear Paenitia, a hole. Into the attic and all the way across on the other side, past leaves, roots, and a lot of spider webs. A task for an acrobat, or a strong man.

However in the circus performer matchups, the little Lucht is closest to a clown. Hidden away underneath armour and mask, and an oft hilarious sight to behold. She steels herself, then power-walks her way across planting each foot firmly, pushing herself forward. She steps around suspicious patches, and unexpectedly reaches the other side.

"Ole!" She quietly congratulates herself, turning to look back along the roofline. Where she sees that Rocky and Aimarra are stuck. In spider webs.

Oh no.

She looks at the hole, expecting a mount worthy of the Knight of Spiders to emerge, with a much more hostile demeanor.

Fresh of her success, Aimarra is too focused on the goal, and in her quest to run the roof cat-like, the cobwebs gradually wind themselves around one ankle, holding her fast to teh roof. She looks down, and scowls.

Maybe the roof was a bad idea after all.

The good news is that at the moment nothing foulsome is emerging from the hole. Indeed everything seems dark and quiet inside the house. Almost... too quiet.

Seyardu, following up behind the others, puts one foot in front of the other. It should be manageable, certainly. As long as the roof held her weight, and it seemed to. So it continues for some time. Though when she is on the other side, looking to Paenitia, she immediately wheels around, finding the others not there. And beneath, what appears to be them stuck to webs. Very, very large webs.

"We will do what we can from up here to assist." She says, reaching into her bag. She affixes a coil of rope to a sturdy looking beam, before she offers it to Rocky, finding him more constrained at the moment. "Do what you can to assist Aimara, I will help as soon as possible." She says to the Lucht.

Paenitia nods, and anchors off her rope on a support beam and throwing the end towards Aimarra.

Rocky accepts the assistance, struggeling with hsi organic bindings. While some progress is made,it's done passing thru more web, and the net progress is null.

It takes a good shake, but Aimarra is nearly already free when the rope comes flying her way, and she grabs it, freeing her foot from the last of the webbing. Once free, she looks over at the hapless Rock, then at Paenitia, gesturing towards the sith-makar with the rope.

As Paenitia ties off her rope and starts to throw it toward Aimarra - who no longer needs it as she's freed herself - there's a loud ringing noise that almost but not quite muffles the sound of skittering that comes from beneath you. The skittering is followed by legs. Long legs that come crawling out of the hole that Paenitia is standing right over. Beneath Paenitia she can watch as a mulititude of glowing red eyes peirce the darkness beneath her and a low voice rumbles out. "ESSSSTSSS YOU. MUSSSSST EEESSSSTSSS YOU."

Paenitia is riding a spider! This is not her first time. It is her first time in battle, with one that is trying to kill her. Her hand slips down to twine into the quills of its carapace. She raises her warhammer.

She sees a lot of damage. She's confident in her abilities but she didn't hit it that hard, so many times. Something else is going on, enough to make her doubt.

Those eyes. Its glowing red eyes, that adds another doubt. "Hold! Spider! Hold!"

She attempts to control it, recalling the Albino Lucht's lessons. There weren't many, and she had the knowledge of raising hers from an egg. Yet, the little Lucht manages to hold on, stay riding, even if her 'mount' isn't obeying.

"Friend Dragon," Paenitia addresses Seyardu, "I think more going on. Do you have the spell to free the mind? Spider! You are near death, one hit and you will die. Do not bite. The allies, will not bite if you stop. You will be healed."

"We are not the good food." Paenitia says emphatically. Hopefully this wasn't all part of the spider's master plan to attract food and then get eaten by her babies.

"PEEEEEEASSSSE! NO MORE HURT." The spider cowers away from the little Lucht, taking a step back from the group in general. "MUSSST EEEETTTSSSS. NO MORE HURTSSSS." It takes on a defensive posture, trying to protect itself from... you.

Rocky chuffs softly, ready to strike if it goes offensive, but holds for now.

About to move again, Aimarra backs off at the Lucht riding a giant spider , sword held in a defensive posture, but at the ready.

Seyardu steadies herself on her feet, fighting against the poison. It was not taking hold, but there was a dizziness that was not helped by the height. She was unsure seeing Paenitia riding up, and the Lucht's words confirmed it. She stayed her weapon, looking to the cowering beast. "We are not food, yes." Seyardu agrees, calling down the home. This one has a spell which may help, but it would be best that they relax some first."

She turns back to the spider. "If you will not harm us, then we will help how we can. This one can mend wounds if you need. Would you speak to us of what happened? If there is anything else, this one may be able to help."

"We get food for you. We get food for you." Paenitia says, carefully leaning forward. Faran showed her a few places spiders like to be scratched. It is a little unnerving, high up on a building, on top of a spider. It's a long way down, "There, it will be ok. We get you food."

She looks up, her eyes meeting Seyardu's through her mask, "Maybe the food first, before the healing, if the mind enchantment can't be broke?" She slips her warhammer into the belt loop, relatively certain she won't need it now.

She reaches up to scratch along the top of its head, "We have... oop."

She falls right off.

The spider flails it's limbs a little but bobs its head. "EYEEEESSSS MUSSST ETTTTSSS ALL ON ROOF." It wobbles and... The little woman falls off of it. It looks down and gently pokes her to make sure she's okay. Snaps its teeth in the air and seems to fight with itself. "MUSSSST EEEEETTTTSSSS."

Rocky chuffs quietly. "Maybe... leave roof?"

Seyardu finds her way to the ground, not gracefully, but the rope at least made it a controlled decent rather than not. There was no way she was getting all the webs off from it. "I know of a friend who has a companion which is a large spider like yourself. The one here with me, she is her friend as well. I did not mean to hurt you, but there was a bite to my leg."

Seyardu had put the hammer away, and she nods to Paenitia, Rocky, and Aimarra. "This one has magic that may help. Will you allow me to use it?" She asks to both Paenitia and the spider. It was odd, but not the strangest. She was used to talking to druids of the shaman caste.

Aimarra, for her part, stands in that defensive posture, balanced on the roof, unmoving.

Paenitia is poked. She is fine, aside from the precarious perch on the rooftop and the view of the underside of a spider. So many legs! So much damage. She's unsettled to see the creature in this condition. Carefully, she stands.

Looking to her allies, the Red Knight says, "I think off the roof is best. The surprise we might have is gone, and this resolve may help."

To the spider, she says, "I get off the roof. You take me down to the ground? Everyone off the roof, no need to eat, we get you food, help to feel better."

She tests to see if the spider will let her climb back on, then ride it to the ground.

As Seyardu casts her spell to relieve the evil mind control on the spider, there is a massive explosion that rocks the whole area. Boards fly in every direction. Hitting and injuring everyone except Paenitia who is riding the spider and ends up blocked by its body, and Seyardu who is right in front of the spider and is also thusly protected by its body. Both of them end up underneath the spider as a pair of figures exit the building carrying a few heavy-looking crates.

As you groggily roll on the ground, some of you unconscious from the explosion, other's grievously injured - the spider dead and pinning the other half of your number to the ground - they make their escape.

But not without one more prize. They take Aimarra's unconscious figure with them.

The spider rises from its hole and... it is massive. But it is also obviously heavily injured. It looks like it's been pummeled and beaten. It's eyes are glowing red unnaturally, and one of its legs is leaking viscus liquid. It snaps its teeth and Seyardu who is close enough and hissess at eve
