Raiders of the Lost Tomb, Part 2

Society Base Camp, Tomb of the Gray King, Veyshan The priests have completed their prayers, ritually striking themselves seven times with a knout as penance for disturbing the King's rest, and promising he shall be interred in the Vardamen necropolis as he deserves. The prayers are not unduly unctuous or obsequious, but it's clear it's to soothe the long-deceased monarch so that he might not rise in anger. Of course, such a tomb probably has more defenses to offer than a merely irritated undead king, which is where the adventurers come in. As the priests end their rituals, they stand aside for the group to enter, only offering as a reminder, "Please do not cause undue damage, we wish to return him with as much of his grave goods intact as possible."

Aimarra, who'd been bemusedly watching the wizard-types work out the puzzle that held the door shut with folded arms, turns her head to look over at the speaker. "Understood, though we won't be much good to you if we don't return at all." A half-smile, and she straightens up, dropping her arms and preparing to move inside.

Steeling herself, Slixvah mutters a few incantations and a flick of the wand, several fortifying magics solidifying themselves on her person. "Undastood!" she chirps to the priests, "We'll do our best!" Once everyone was gathered and ready, she presses on!

Still looking thorougly pleased with herself for her contribution to the puzzle solving, Fidget ignores the silly man and his silly suggestion. Sometimes things were meant to explode, like destiny or something, and Fidget can't control destiny. She spies Slix summoning magical armour and does the same, weaving a blue haze around herself. "So...bets on how long before this place tries to kill us?" she asks, with a little giggle. Aelwyn adjusts the few ribbons tied to his horns, waiting patiently for the rituals to end. He was both pleased at having to be tall enough to be called to height duty - and not so pleased with having people stand on his shoulders anyway. Can't win every battle. "Tch, these ones are professional." The draconian rumbles, gesturing to the group. "Surely nothing will be broken." He flashes his teeth, getting read to head in as well. Irshya remains completely quiet, her eyes focused down on the floor, seemingly lost in thought or perhaps internal prayers of her own. When done, she nods to the priests. "As an adherent of a God, I am disinclined to disturb the honoured dead. So I will endeavour to keep any damage to an absolute minimum. I know, or are passingly familiar, with the others here. We're not people who would harm or loot the tomb. Let this put you at ease, the King will be retrieved along with his grave goods."

A short hall, with painted depictions in the old Veyshanti 'sideways style' of the path a soul takes from birth to death and the Halls. Despite their age, the paintings are practically intact and quite gorgeous -- a mirror for the elaborate puzzle you had to solve to open the doors to the tomb. Soon, the hall opens up into a carved chamber, two rows of four pillars supporting the vaulted roof, the engravings here much more ominous -- depicting tomb guardians and death for the unwary interloper. At the far end of the hall, a large stone statue stands, carved in the style of a man dressed in robes, cradling a sphere. At either side of the hall, dusty carved statues of skeletal guardians stand impassively, each with the skull of a great horned bull.

GAME: Fidget casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 7 DC: 16 <OOC> Fidget says, "Looking at the statues on either side as the group passes close enough, to see if they're just ominous, or ominous and also magically dangerous." <OOC> Telamon says, "Alright, so nothing registers as magical. However, as you advance, make perception checks (everyone advancing into the hall)."

The mere sight of the carvings on the walls of this chamber, and the figures within, are sufficient to have Aimarra reaching for her bow, stringing and reaching for an arrow from her quiver. "I don't like the look of that," she murmurs, in very low tones, to the people nearest her.

Slixvah can't help but smile as she looks up at the depictions, the brass bangles on her silk robes quietly pinging with each step. "Gorgeous," she hums to herself, only to slow to a crawl at the pillars and the open room. "Spooky..." She nods with Aimarra. "Oh yeah, me too. Tote's weird. Aight goobers, let's get a lil spread out, keep a friend close, an' all tha'."

The Goblin limps along, using her trident as a leaning staff. She eyes the hieroglyphics curiously, hmming at the progression of life through death and beyond. "The journey to the Grey Halls, domain of Vardama, the Basalt Queen. Dweller in the Deep. They do not build tombs like this one any longer, which is a shame. Will the new one be worthy, I wonder?" Irshya eyes the people around her, keeping track of them as she walks along. "I would wager a good lunch at the TarRaCe that those skeletal figures are Guardians. The man holding the sphere, perhaps depicting the world, as they knew it, could be the Good King we're looking for." The pool-shark's gait falters, and she slows to a stop. An audible noise is heard as she swallows. "The Good King just ... looked at me."

Aelwyn walks along near the front, casually holding his glaive around his shoulder, one hand folded over the haft. "Tch, this one always heard stories of tombs." He flashes his teeth, taking a slow spin around. "This was not aware they did spent all that time carving tombs fit for kings." He flicks his tail about. When they start to to slow down, Aelwyn glances at Irshya. "Stones are attracted to Sharkie now?" He teases, but turns to look at the said King. "This one supposes the Queen of the TarRaCe does attract royal attention." Another swipe from his tail.

Renewing her detection spell as they stride cautiously into the tomb, Fidget eyes those statues with suspicion. "Creepy statues, or creepy *trap* statues..." she muses, though can't detect any magic on them at the moment. "Don't seem to be enchanted, though." the goblin shares with the group, then pauses as Irshya speaks, "He...what? That seems not-good." she says, looking at the pillars nearby and preparing to maybe have to run for cover.

"Huh?" Carver burps out, as Irshya calls upon the eldritch lore. "Wassit? The Basalt Queen? Bet she had some great hi--" Whatever useless heresy she was about to blurt out is cut off as she recognizes the last part, and its meaning. She slips a few feet to her right, to get a better firing range clear of her allies. Then, helpfully, calls out! "Good King, Sir! Hello."

Abruptly, there is a rumbling sound, and a voice speaks in Old Veyshanti overhead. "The Gray King's mercy is not unlimited. Flee now, interlopers." The statues to either side stir, limbs flexing, shaking off the dust of eons to reveal yellowed bone, and the statue in the center begins to move as well, holding aloft the orb it carries in one hand. It appears the security measures of Ahlatos's tomb are intact, and ready for any adventuring types...

Round One - Init 23. It is now Aimarra's turn! Fidget is next! GAME: Aimarra casts Gravity Bow. Caster Level: 7 DC: 13 <OOC> Aimarra says, "That and move to 12,15, I believe I should be able to do that?"

Aimarra, who'd been staring at Irshya as she made her pronouncement, snaps her head back around at the voice. "So the Gray King did defy the will of the Basalt Queen, after all. He can take his mercy and shove it up his arsehole." Quickly, Aimarra drops one hand from her bow to murmur a prayer. "Lend my bow Your power, Shepherd." A gray sheen ripples down the bow, and she moves to take cover behind a pillar. "I'll work on the orb wielder! My bow isn't much good against bone!"

It is now Fidget's turn! Irshya is next! GAME: Fidget rolls knowledge/arcana: (2)+16: 18 *Minor success* <OOC> Fidget thinks she will Haste the party, then take cover at 5,15. GAME: Fidget casts Haste. Caster Level: 7 DC: 19

"Uhh, not sure exactly what they're weak to - but they're all constructs, so the usual stuff." Fidget says, glancing around at the newly spry statuary. "Wasn't this guy supposed to be, like, not fond of the undead? I think even if you make it into a construct that a bone golem is still necromancy." Then she calls out arcane words in a loud voice, and draws a symbol in the air, which glows blue and pulses in a rush to rest on each of the group, filling them with speed, an urge to act, and a slight craving for snacks. Then she zips aside to hide behind one of the pillars - no need to draw too much attention to herself just yet. "I just want to point out in advance, that when this place gets fireballed - it wasn't my fault. They told us no undead!" Fidget says, and grins at whoever's nearest - Carver has the fortune this time to be her audience.

It is now Irshya's turn! Orb is next! <OOC> Irshya says, "Irshay would like to also roll know/arcana, and she is going to cast blessing of ferver." GAME: Irshya rolls know/arcana: (18)+14: 32 *Success* GAME: Irshya casts Blessing of Fervor. Caster Level: 8 DC: 18

Without looking, the Goblin swats at Aelwyn's tail with the butt-end of her trident. "No, I mean, the statue's eyes moved to look at us, its eyes are tracking the group." Irshya begins to move forward once more, albeit more slowly and wary. "Well, perhaps we might converse and reason with these guardians, the one with the globe may have a spark of intelligence..." As the statues begin to come to life, and the voice speaks, she lets out a lengthy sigh. "Or not." She quickly cants her head left and right, the vertebrae in her neck popping noisily. "Rada, Serpent who Circles the World, hear my plea and invest my puny body with a mote of your divine power. Bolster my companions battle prowess in this battle to come." Her holy symbol, a small trident hanging around her neck on a silvery chain, rises up, glowing brightly. Those around her absorb a morsel of the glow, each, invested with Rada's fervor. "The statue with the globe is a cephalophore, made to guard tombs and holy sites. It is basically made of marble, and can knock you silly if it hits you. The skeletons are bone golems, you uhm.. I am not sure on what to do with those. Fidgie, Vee, you have any fire?" Irshya pauses, squints. "Maybe slightly less fire than that?"

It is now Orb's turn! Slixvah is next! <OOC> Telamon says, "Alright, so: the cephalophore (Orb) stomps forward and tries to backhand Aelwyn." The massive statue lurches forward with a slow, purposeful gait. Its marble feet tread across the dusty floor, and it draws back a fist that slams into Aelwyn, dazing and rattling the makari warrior with the sheer force as the silent guardian attacks.

It is now Slixvah's turn! Boney2 is next! <OOC> Slixvah casts heroism on aelwyn then move to 6,14 GAME: Slixvah casts Heroism. Caster Level: 9 DC: 18 <OOC> Slixvah says, "free action prehensile hair out, turn! I'll take the AC/att buff from BoF"

Slixvah peers about at things, not touching anything as she listens to the cleric of Rada give a rundown of Vardama. "Fascinatin'," she hums. A snicker runs through her from Aelwyn as she looks up at the statue. "... oh, shiggy, ye', she right." The egalrin takes a reverent bow as a knee goes into the ground. "Ooh Grey King, please grant us-" rumbling! "-savepassagethroughwithblessingoftheBasalt- awh sod it, look alive!" She looks to Irshya, eyes wide. "Golems immune ta magic! And it ain' technically necromancy but I ain' gonna argue tha'! Keep th' fire ta a minimum, probably won't even work!" Too slow to the draw being on a knee, she hisses in empahtic pain as Aelwyn gets slammed! An ethereal thread is grabbed out of the air- "Tsi uryo itme!" -and jams it into his side, filling him with vigor! She slides out of the way into cover, the feathers on her wings unravling and wafting around her.

It is now Boney2's turn! Carver is next! <OOC> Telamon says, "Boney2 comes down to take a swing at Aimarra." GAME: Telamon rolls 1d20+14: (13)+14: 27 *Hit* GAME: Telamon rolls 1d8+4: (8)+4: 12

One of the bone golems advances as well, creaking and leaving behind a trail of crumbling dust and mud as more of its exterior flakes off to reveal the yellowed bound bones beneath. The head slams into Aimarra viciously, the horns cutting at her as the voiceless guards of the tomb continue to press.

It is now Carver's turn! Aelwyn is next! <OOC> Carver says, "I would like to rapid shot at number 2, full attack with +2 from fervor" GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (2)+12: 14 *Miss* GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (5)+12: 17 *Miss* GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (4)+12: 16 *Miss* GAME: Carver rolls weapon8-5: (20)+12+-5: 27 (THREAT) GAME: Carver rolls weapon8-5: (19)+12+-5: 26 *Critical Hit* GAME: Carver rolls 3d8+6: (14)+6: 20

It's weird. Carver isn't really into magic. Until one gets a taste of what it's like to be magical from not just one goblin, but two really magical goblins. A renaissance of short lady appreciation; green mint ice cream with just a hint of sea salt feverish on her lips and tongue. Wooooooooooooooooooooooooow. "I feel great! I can do this! DEATH TO THE MONARCHIST!" The explosion of red-blooded enthuiasm erupts from first lungs and then bow, lightning flashes of arrows released almost without aiming, a creature of raw instinct and crackling magical enchantment that has her hair standing on end and eyes wide and manic.

It is now Aelwyn's turn! Boney1 is next! <OOC> Aelwyn says, "+2 rolls/+2 ac"

Aelwyn tilts his head upwards at the sound - and then at the golems as they start to move. His glaive is pulled down and he looks around, claws scraping against the floor. "These statues really took a liking-" He begins. And gets smacked to the ground, sending him reeling. Blood spills to the floor from his jaw as he spins about in place, groaning in pain. The other golem stomps down a similar path to its mirror image, stopping as it comes around the pillar to find Irshya. Much as the other did, it slams its head down to hit the goblin a glancing blow (mostly due to being shorter than Aimarra).

It is now Boney1's turn! Aimarra is next! <OOC> Telamon says, "Boney1 attempts to thump Irshya the same way." GAME: Telamon rolls 1d20+14: (12)+14: 26 *Hit* GAME: Telamon rolls 1d8+4: (1)+4: 5

GAME: NEW ROUND! It is now Aimarra's turn! Fidget is next!

<OOC> Aimarra says, "Drop the bow, take +2/+2 from BoF, 5' step drawing morningstar and full attack. I think I can full attack after the 5' step with a draw." And that was exactly what Aimarra was hoping wouldn't happen. She reels with a cry as she is _slammed_ by bone guardian, the bull horns sending blood flying as she crunches into the stone pillar next to her. That'll smart in the morning. The bow clatters to the ground, and she pulls the morningstar from her belt. No help for it, and the twin magics surging through her grant her a burst of speed that is hard to account for. Her first swing is wild, but the second two connect, cracking bones and damaging flesh.

It is now Fidget's turn! Irshya is next! GAME: Fidget rolls knowledge/arcana: (13)+16: 29 *Success* <OOC> Fidget says, "I'm going to circle around the pillars to avoid being too close to anything on my way to 6,6, and Dragon's Breath the Orb. Fidget weaves in between the pillars at a zoomy pace, and lines up her spell, crunching on something she'd flicked onto her tongue. Taking a deep breath, Fidget stretches her jaw wide and a hose of green steaming acid launches from her mouth, rushing towards the orb. Then it parts around the damned thing, leaving a thin gap between the round surface and the spraying ichor, the acid sprays instead on the floor and nearby pillars, sizzling as it eats into the stone. Fidget burps loudly, dripping just a couple more acid drops onto the floor in front of her. "Ah! I hate things like thiiiiis. You might be resistant, but I've got more spells than you can shrug off, you overgrown marble."

It is now Irshya's turn! Orb is next! <OOC> Irshya says, "Irshya would like to move to 9,15, provoke #1. She is going to take the +2ac/+2attack option from BoF." <OOC> Irshya says, "Her action this round will be to channel energy. She was going to get all of the party, but Fidget has move out of her range." <OOC> Irshya says, "Healing for the party and damage for the bone golems. She is avoiding healing the orb." OK, so... when Irshya channels, everyone heals 13 HP (except Fidget)... and while it doesn't damage the golems they are now slowed for -four rounds-."

The pool-shark eyes Aelwyn's predicament, and then blinks up at the other Golem that stomps over to headbutt her in the face. She grunts, taking a step back as a crackle of electricity jumps from her to her trident. "You're going to pay for that.", she growls, hawking noisily and spitting out a bloody, triangular shaped tooth. She moves away, taking another hit that gets her in the shoulder. Her eyes shift to Aelwyn, and she growls. "Quit fooling around and snap outta it." Her holy symbol crackles a little with static electricity, and it hovers once more. "Holy World Circling Serpent, your tiny servant beseeches your aid. Sooth my companions wounds... and teach this monstrosity what happens to that which defiles your servants." The mini-trident flashes, and her companions all feel their wounds begin to fade, the pain fading with them. The bone golems, on the other hand, find their movements slowing to a crawl. "I'mma going show 'em, Vee. Immune my ass." The now-angry Goblin crackles once more with static electricity, tiny strands of her hair beginning to stand up on her head.

It is now Orb's turn! Slixvah is next! <OOC> Telamon says, "Alright, so the Orb holds his basketball up, and there's a flash. The robed statue holds the sphere in its hand high, and there is a sudden, luminous flash from it, washing over everyone except Aimarra (who is hidden behind the pillar). Most of the heroes avert their eyes, but Irshya is stunned by the brilliant, startling light, left stunned.

It is now Slixvah's turn! Boney2 is next! <OOC> Slixvah says, "move to 10,14, soothsayer fortune hex on aimarra. Feathers still out, have reach, turn!"

Slixvah grunts as a flash goes across, her using a feather to shield herself as she flaps her wings once, drawing her closer towards Aimarra. Several strands appear in the air, and she ties them about before tightening them and strumming and releasing them. For Aimarra, it feels like one has stepped out of the right side of the bed for the day. "Let 'em have it!" she coos before huffing at Irshya. "It's tru fo' the MOST part! But good job!"

It is now Boney2's turn! Carver is next! <OOC> Telamon says, "Boney2 is very confused at how slooooow it is. Swings at Aimarra once." GAME: Telamon rolls 1d20+13: (13)+13: 26 *Hit* GAME: Telamon rolls 2d6+4: (7)+4: 11

One of the bone golems shudders, almost sputtering as its limbs start refusing to obey its construct-driven will. A clumsy blow slams into Aimarra, but no more as the guardian is sluggish and apparently having trouble following up.

It is now Carver's turn! Aelwyn is next! <OOC> Carver says, "Very good, I will once again rapid shot with fof+2's at bony2" GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (9)+12: 21 *Hit* GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (19)+12: 31 *Hit* GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (7)+12: 19 *Miss* GAME: Carver rolls weapon8: (1)+12: 13 (EPIC FAIL) GAME: Carver rolls 1d8+3: (7)+3: 10 GAME: Carver rolls 1d8+3: (1)+3: 4 *Damage Resisted*

Carver's attention is briefly snagged by Irshya darting past, and then Fidget's exhaled dragon burp, already closing her eyes against the intense heat just as the orb is held aloft in blinding radiance. Despite the flared circles dancing in her eyes, she steps into a different angle and then unleashes another volley at the golem wrapped up with Aimarra, and watches as arrows seem to just bounce off their thick hide like dying fireflies in the dark.

It is now Aelwyn's turn! Boney1 is next! <OOC> Aelwyn says, "Yes, so I'm going to challenge the orb to a duel" <OOC> Aelwyn says, "Then do the full round attack thing. Your glaive has hardness 14 and 30 HP, now down to 27. I think it's broken if it drops to 15 or less."

Aelwyn's head spins a bit, growling as he staggers back a bit. "Do not worry Sharkie," He lowly rumbles as he looks at the giant statue. He doesn't avert his eyes from the flash - he spits a gob of blood into the ground between him and the construct. "This one will make certain this is powderized." Graciously sweeping out his burning glaive, he takes in a deep breath and... "Come dance, let my blade dismantle you." A flash of his bloody teeth and glides into action. Glaive strikes down, slides out, is struck towards the middle. Each movement as if he were floating in motion - but each swing of the blade coming down crashing, hard. Hard enough for a bit of the blade to chip off with a brilliant 'ping'. The golems are rendered sluggish by the influx of positive energy, and this shows with the other golem trying to pursue Irshya... but its pace is reduced to a practical crawl, staggering along.

It is now Boney1's turn! Aimarra is next! <OOC> Telamon laughs and laughs. OK, so the bone golems weren't exactly -fast- to start with, but being slowed means they can only take a move or standard AND their speed is halved. So boney1 is just lumbering along at... 10' a round.

GAME: NEW ROUND! It is now Aimarra's turn! Fidget is next! <OOC> Aimarra says, "Hit it until ti stops being funny. Fortune lets me use the higher of the next two rolls for my first attack." A rush of magic and the touch of feathers, along with what is clearly a lot happening on the other side of that pillar, makes Aimarra look back a moment, and another crushing blow sends her staggering into the pillar with a groan. "Damn it." She looks back, adn there's the bird. "Thanks," she tosses back quickly to Slixvah, and straightens. More smashes with the morningstar land, but only one does any real damage.

It is now Fidget's turn! Irshya is next! <OOC> Fidget says, "I'm going to try Scorching Ray. Using +2 BoF. Both rays at The Orb. Then move left to the wall" GAME: Fidget casts Scorching Ray. Fidget bares her teeth and sends two blasts of fire at the orb, both bouncing off harmlessly to the goblin's increasing frustration. "Damn you!" she curses, but she doesn't seem all that unhappy. Nothing really bad has happened yet.

It is now Irshya's turn! Orb is next! <OOC> Telamon says, "Pose shaking off, but no action (you can select your BoF option tho)." <OOC> Irshya says, "She is going for the +2 attack/+2 ac."

Irshya wobbles about, reeling from the attack that knocked the senses clean out of her, staying barely out of reach from the slowed golem. Insert JAWS theme here. She stops then, shaking her head vigorously, to chase away the motes of light clouding her vision. Another crackle, and growl, from the Goblin, as she slowly turns towards the slowly approaching construct. Her frown is augmented by the new hole in her toothline, the gums there a bloody, shredded mess. The cephalophore staggers as Aelwyn's flaming blade tears into it, charring the pristine marble, and it turns its full fury on the warrior in response. One foot slams down next to the makari, missing, as another backhand with the orb in its fist strikes him -- but this time the blow does not leave Aelwyn dazed as it did.
