It's Gilday, Firetide 15 13:17:16 1018. The full moon isn't up. The tide is low and ebbing. Towering white clouds drift slowly through the blue sky. It's hazy and hot, and the glare of the sun seems to drain the color from the landscape.

A07: Fernwood Pub

Ranik comes into the pub with his staff in hand, making a tock-tock as he strides into the room. He looks around for a moment and says, "It sure has been hot lately, and then demons popping up all over the place. It's like hell around here."

"And here I thought Alexandria was a nice place to visit..." comes a reply comment above and to the left of the entrance. Aya descends the stairs from the upper level and is at the mid-point when the comment is made.

As he reaches an empty seat, Ranik looks over at Aya and says, "Usually is. I suppose it's hot everywhere, though." The seat he takes is by a corner, where he conveniently leans his quarterstaff. He deposits Herman, his ermine, on the table, then unslings his shoulder pack and sets it on the chair next to his.

Aya reaches the main floor and steps across it to the barkeep to request a drink. "The heat is easier to tolerate than disease, hunger, death... It would be convenient if the demons found somewhere else to play."

Ranik chuckles. "My lady, you have a gift for understatement. Did you see the crowd of folks that mobbed the food vendors in the lower market district yesterday? There must have been a hundred or more, just ordinary folks. They ate everything they could find, even stuff that an oruch wouldn't normally touch, and smashed the place up bad. It was awful!" He calls to the barkeep, "Some bread and sausage, please?"

Aya arches a brow, then looks to the barkeep. "I'll have the same, please. While it's still available." Eat now while the eating is good. She returns her attention to Ranik. "I didn't see that, now, and I'm content that I didn't."

The barkeep nods and brings a platter out to the table. Ranik pays him and rises in a gesture of invitation for Aya to join him. He says, "That's all I've personally seen, but I've heard rumors of more."

A member of the city guard sitting at another table pipes in with "Oh, yeah, pal. That's not the half of it. We've had deadly fights break out in a couple of the bars around town, even in the nobility district, and demons walking around by the shipyards. We've sure got a mess on our hands."

Ranik and Aya sit and dig in while the guard tells his bit.

Aya looks up after several tentative, then evaluating, bites. "If it proves too much for the guard, the city will call in additional help. From the Guild, most likely."

At this, a gleam catches the young wizard's eye. He says, "Well, there's a silver lining to this cloud. Well said. I wonder if the Binder's behind this latest round of mayhem, or someone else."

"Yes, there could be fortunes made," the corner of Aya's mouth lifts mildly. "By those that survive the ordeal."

Ranik nods with a smile as the same guard that just spoke is suddenly overcome with violent nausea and boils spontaneously erupt all over his retching body. Everybody moves as fast as they can to put as much distance as they can between themselves and this unfortunate public servant and to avoid his projectile vomiting. Fortunately, he had been sitting facing away from the table where Ranik's and Aya's lunch has now been disturbed.

Ranik quickly casts a spell, then says to Aya, "This may give you a measure of protection for a minute." and casts the same spell, reaching out to touch her arm for a moment.

Aya takes herself, and her food, several steps away from the public servant. Expediently. The suddenly extended hand of Ranik sparks a severe eyeing until his explanation is processed. She allows the contact in the end. "You may have many seeking your aid very quickly."

Ranik rises quickly after his magic, then slings the pack on his shoulder and grabs his ermine and quarterstaff, all thought of his unfinished lunch having gone completely. He says, "I just hope it doesn't spread to us, but I'm no healer. I think, though, that I'd better go find one, and quickly!" He joins the queue trying to escape through the pub's front door.
