Problems in Havenwood

=================> Roleplay Nexus: Havenwood <==================

The town of Havenwood has surely seen better days. The various buildings appear loved but run-down as the townfolk fix things as they break. Most of the homes and buildings sit on the east side of the river that crosses through the center of the area that is deemed Havenwood. However, several of the homes and farmsteads are also on the west. Two covered bridges provide easy access for crossing.

In the center of the village is a lovely gazebo that seems to be the center of life here as well. All around the gazebo are various shops, the jail, even the town hall. Across the river is a local Temple to Vardama, set aside to tend to the souls of the village, and those who have departed. Outside of the center of town are several posts that display the local news, along with all the farms that feed the villagers.
Overlooking this somewhat peaceful village is a husk of a large stone building on the hill. It is large and imposing, with a sagging roof in the main part of the structure. A partially overgrown path leads from the southern edge of the village, which winds its way around the base of the hill, and back along it's southern slope to the prison itself.

With the efforts of the adventurers, the look of the village has changed, mosty on the northwestern side where the Church to Vardama is. A 10' wall surrounds the church, except for a gap that allows the defenders to come and go. There are trenches also dug around, terring into some of the farms that are around the church. Everyone is inside, the people are nervous and have been since they were taken inside.

A line appears on the horizon, with a few dots up in the sky as well. The undead are here and are moving quickly to overtake the village. In fact, it takes about an hour before they are there and start getting within range of the defenders.

Duncan is on one of his endless circuits around the outskirts of the village when he sees the line. He curses and then peers up at Garrin, to make sure he's also seen. Then he directs his Khazad digger to take him around to meet up with Godwyn.

The oruch monk known as Kroth, has chosen the back wall of the church. That is the area between the church and the stone walls that were built around it with magic. He figures that something might get through, either by flying or just walking through the wall, and someone should be here to sound the alert and fight. He will walk back and forth from the corners, so he can look down the sides of the building too.

Tatyannah goes around setting things on fire that should be hugely ablaze by the time the undead get there. Then she heads back to her position, somewhere behind the cavalry sorts and in front of the gap leading to the church. Basically, she'll be doing her usual, stupid battle plan - run at things and stab them repeatedly.

GAME: Cesran casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 15 DC: 19

Godwyn's eyes narrow as she sits astride Argent Fire, a nine foot long lance in her right hand.

"That is a small army, Godwyn. And they're organized like one."

Godwyn glances over her right shoulder, to the hilt of her great sword. "I noticed. Which means the one controlling them knows what they're doing." She looks back toward the undead as they approach. "Time to sound the alarm and hoist the colors then."

She glances over toward Garrin as he approaches. "You see them all? They're a proper battalion and marching like it."

This is a mission Tethelle can get behind. Protecting innocents from an invading undead army is something she can agree to do with no reservations.

Well, except for the 'safety' ones. She's spent the last few days going out to more distant farmsteads, bringing people in, and helping with some of the defenses - mostly by moving things around and helping assemble wood barricades that, along with the trenches, should channel the undead into narrower clusters.

She's nervous, especially when she sees the line. That is... a lot of undead. Tethelle spends a lot of time making sure her thunderbelcher (already pristine) is in perfect condition, and trying to reassure the people inside the church. She understands what they're going through and does not want to make it worse.

But before they actually get here, she moves back outside, where she can see the 'gate'. She's going to need to deal with anyone who tries to get in that way, and is dead.

GAME: Kroth used a Wand of Mage Armor.

"Right-o. I'll be up there," says Garrin, now floating above the group with a nice rope attached to the church. He's really not wanting to fall to his death or anything else to happen. Especially flying undead. "Please don't let there be any undead dragons," he prays.

Over. And over.

Cesran is leaning against his staff at the entrance to the wall. He looks over towards the others and he takes a deep breath as he readies himself for this battle. "So are we going to wait for them to come to us or take the fight to them?"

Kira alternates between inside and outside the church, but mostly inside until she hears word that there are things outside the walls. Keeping the people as calm and comfortable as possible is important. Panic could do as much damage as anything else. "Please, don't be afraid. We'll keep everyone safe..." Their spirits are also why she tries very hard to stifle a gasp when she first sees signs of what's coming.

Renfrey is crouched in the corner of a saddle where two parts of a roof come together, just an inky splotch in a shadow with a bow and bundle of arrows ready. Worst case scenario... he runs but as long as the walls stand he will stat start sniping enemies as soon as they come within the range envelope of his shortbow. Should be easy right? Afterall its not like he is likely to miss hitting an undead. He is keeping a carefull eye out though for anything or anyone that looks smarter than the average joe, someone controlling, someone hopefully silly enough to show themselves.

"Oh hell," says Garrin as the flying figures arrive. HE looks rathemr miserable. "THERE IS A LOT OF THEM," he announces.

Kroth looks around from his spot at the back, moving to the front to check on the progress of the approaching army. "Yes, a lot of them." He then moves back to his position guarding the rear, someones going to sneak around, he knows it.

Tethelle peeks out through the gateway.

"You aren't kiddin'," she mutters to herself, not bothering to hide her accent (country Heartlands near the frontier). She started to count on her fingers, gave up, started to count ones that looked dangerous, gave up, and then just stopped counting entirely.

Cesran looks up and he narrows his eyes to try to see what Duncan is pointing at. He moves his hand over his eyes to shade them so he can get a better look.

GAME: Cesran rolls perseption: (1)+perseption: 1 (EPIC FAIL)

Tatyannah gives round numbers. She's probably not off by much. All told, yes, it adds up to 'a lot'.

GAME: Cesran rolls Perception: (17)+17: 34

Kira at least manages to make sure the church door is closed behind her before she frowns. "Bar the door as best you can!" She calls through it, trying to sound firm but not too frantic. She hopes. Seeing things in the air, she calls up to Garrin. "Do you need me to bring you down?!"

The first wave comes and many of them fall into the trenches and ditches that were dug around, but others go around it, or wait until there are enough undead bodies in there that they could be walked over. But they're coming to the walls, all different types of them.

Tatyannah goes full bore on some rather disgusting rotting looking corpses. Thank goodness for her undead bane on the sphere. She manages to make a tidy little hole in their line, disrupting it and even moving some of them backwards. She tries not to look too pleased with herself, lest karma comes back on her and kicks her ass.

Stjepan gets out his bow, anoints it with some sort of oil, then nocks an arrow, ready to shoot!

So Garrin calls down to Kira, "I'm good! For the moment. Give me a bit of time!" He proceeds to begin openiing up with magic, feathered hat flopping in the wind as a wide variety of thick webs spring up in one of narrow chokepoints, tying up a great many of the undead who can't seem to break free.

"Woo! Go me," he yells.

Kira isn't going to charge out when they're protected here. That would also leave the villagers without immediate help. So, instead, she turns to call through the door to try and help them further. Renfrey jams his soft leather boot between the tiles of the roof to get a good base and slowly and steadily brings up his bow and aims it into the sky, no quick movements, nothing sudden to give him away until a black feathered shaft is sent from the shadows that Renfrey inhabits, falling short though of the fliers. With the same slow, smooth motions he draws another arrow, nothing sudden, nothing to draw an eye to him.

Duncan sees Tatyannah making progress against the most rotten corpses. Tethelle is starting to get the idea that there are way, way more of them than she was originally hoping for. Who sends this many to go after what amounts to a farming village?

People who really want it gone for symbolic reasons, that's who.

Tethelle demonstrates the skill that got her the work she's gotten. Unshouldering the thunderbelcher, she loads it with an almost electric sizzle. Taking aim, she fires at the approaching corpses just as fast as she can, reloading fluidly and extremely quickly as she takes aim and fires into the crowd, causing disturbances and damage - at least one goes down entirely, falling into another and causing minor chaos.

Her partner rears back and charges forward, just plain *ramming* through a swath of corpses. Godwyn's lance punches through one, two, three of them, knocking them asunder.

Duncan freezes in place. His axe slips slowly out of his hands. Then the Khazad slowly leans to the side before finally falling off of his Digger's back. Snapping and biting at the corspes in front of them it takes the landshark a moment to realize what has happened.

The only words out of Godwyn's mouth are in the forms of grunts and war cries. Her spear dances and Argent tramples his way through the armies of living dead. Two passes go unchallenged as the paladin and her steed clear a path.

Then... the numbers begin to pile up.

"Matron bless us..." She finally slows down, or rather, they slow her down, a considerable amount. "All right, this is getting annoying."

Roaring isn't good. Especially for the people inside who probably can't see what's going on.

Kira hopes as she sees the flying... dragons? She watches them intently. Waiting. Preparing. If anything could get to the church quickly, it'd be them.

"We're still here. You're still safe!" Kira assures the villagers.

As the dragons circle in for another attack, the undead surge forward to push against the walls and to try and get inside and destroy the people there. Before the dragons are able to make their next attack upon the church and it's defenders, there is a sound that comes from the north. It's a strange sound, a mix between a scream and a song, as it comes from the direction of the old prison. As it seems to reach it's peak in volume and pitch, a bright blue light bursts forth from it and strikes at the two dragons. One is struck down, while the other is driven back.

After the second seems to recover from the blow, the dragon lets out a horrible screech and then the undead pause. The dragon takes off and turns back away from the village. The undead eventually shamble away, turning away and leaving the people there alone.

For now.......
