PrP: The Derelict

From Tenebrae
Jump to navigation Jump to search

You're all sent to the harbormaster's office to get you the information you need to find the derelict, and it's not too hard to find — just about any denizen of the docks can point you there without batting an eye. It turns out to be a fairly large building not far from the edge of the docks, sturdily built and well-kept as might be expected for the harbormaster of a prosperous port like Alexandria. People are /everywhere/ from salty sailors to clerks to an orange-striped cat that scampers down the hall and into a side room, a squirming rat in its mouth.

The harbormaster himself is a crusty sort, a weatherbeaten human with a gray beard, crow's feet and laugh lines etched deeply into a leathery face that has seen a lifetime of sun, fairly buried in an office that itself is a study in piles of paper and wooden walls and furniture. Every shelf, every horizontal surface, the windowsill, all but one of the chairs -- all are piled with manifests, ship's lists, charts, maps, and missives of every kind along with rolled paper and scrolls in varying condition and written in probably every language in Ea.

Rhar and Gurr both growl a warning at the orange cat when it scampers by. It better keep scampering. Someone at the big den of hunting people said there was a boat to hunt. To come here. So Rhar is here. Lucky for her, Gurr knows the way. He has a nose for the sea, since one of his ancestors was a salty dog. Fourth great-cousin on his mother's side, thrice removed.

Bennet peers about with a comfortable sort of curiousity. The weathered cowpoke leans against a wall in proper sailor attention, a few habits remembered from his colorful youth. "Anyone get a good look at who, or what, is on that ship?"

"Not accordin' to rumor," Hethyr grunts, standing just far enough away from the desk that her eyes can be met over the pile of paperwork. "But if they's anything more solid to hear, Harbormaster, it'd be a kindness. Either way, seems as you've got the help you're lookin' for."

Standing just inside of the Doorway, Deanna listens quietly to the people that are there. She looks towards Bennet and shrugs a bit. "No idea. I'm hoping they did though. it'll help to know what we're up against."

"Eh? What's that?" A scratchy tenor greeting is the group's first answer, as the man looks up, squinting at each in turn. "What do you want?" he asks querulously, but stops himself. "Oh ... wait. Yer the group from the Explorer's Guild, aren't you? About that derelict in the shipping lanes? Rada's holy hand but am I glad ta see you lot." He turns in his chair, squinting at each of you in turn; he doesn't seem to notice as several of the papers and scrolls that grace his desk go tumbling to the floor. "Well, I'll not judge, the Explorer's Guild knows their business."

He swallows, hard. "Right then. I'll not deny the reports give me the willies. Ain't a one of 'em as is real clear -- nobody dares get close enough to see for certain. Those as look at it or sailed past it are claiming they look like men, but nothing answered hailing. One came in by dark, and allowed as how they'd seen green points of light in the darkness aboard the thing." A convulsive shiver runs through him. "So, you'll go check it out and see if anyone be alive on the thing?"

"Rhar find people. Gurr find people. Pack find people." Rhar answers the question as quick and simple as she can. "Pack like swim!" And they promised shiny things for it, too!

Bennet nods, thinking a moment before asking a touch more. "Any information on the ship itself? What port she's from, any of the crew, what she was hauling? We'll check to see if anyone's alive, put down those who shouldn't be, and save those in need of it. Or give a good show of it, things go pear shaped."

Jokul, oddly enough, isn't actually here on account of a guild, having only just recently hopped down from a boat into the city docks, actually. It's just as likely that the crew on the boat he was hitching on saw the ship in question here, too, but whatever the case might be, the ruckus eventually lead the Aesirian (with surprisingly thin facial hair actually) sporting the breastplate and an array of weaponry (most noticeably the huge-all greatsword slung over his back) here, and propped up against one of the walls inside, listening to everyone else taking care of the questioning and to the answers provided. A lifetime in forced servitude leaves one deferring to others for doing the talking, a lot of the time, see?

Deanna makes a bit of a face as she confirms her own suspicions. She then looks to Bennet and nods in his direction. "With him, actually. Makes more sense than just to get out there and kill everything."

The most pertinent questions asked already, Hethyr simply cocks an eyebrow, listening to what answers may come.

The question from Bennet gives the harbormaster some pause, and he frowns for a moment, stroking his beard. "Y'know ... that be a good question. She's a brigantine, which means she's big enough to have come a ways, and her tack suggests a southern origin. Jade Islands, mayhaps? Mayhaps Veyshan or even Charn. If we dared get closer ...." Blue eyes are serious. "But ... someone's got to or she'll drift ashore somewhere. Might be able to find out if you can get her name."

<OOC> Arlean says, "Anybody got Profession:Sailor?" <OOC> Deanna looks to Bennet. <OOC> Rhar is not the salty dog. <OOC> Deanna is a barb, not a sailor. Bennet frowns in mild disappointment at the lack of information, but nods. "Reckon I'm as ready as gonna get. How exactly we getting out to it?"

You paged Jokul with 'You know what a brigantine is. Two-master, big enough for cargo but likely not for slaves.'

"Swim!" Rhar reminds Bennet. Getting there will be half the fun! And getting back the other half!

"Brigantines don't tend to carry human cargo outside of the crew and maybe few passengers," the baritone of the Aesirian over there by the wall pipes out, abruptly. Jokul's head tilts slightly to the side, with that, to look over towards Rhar bemusedly, before he continues, "Wager there ain't too much movement on board, on account of that. Figger' the cargo might be interesting, though, if there's any."

"Harbormaster," Hethyr chuckles, peering sidelong at Jokul, "since it seems as we got a sailor with... any chance as they's an open boat you might see your way t'lendin' us, so we can go out an' see what's what?"

"Oh, aye," The harbormaster nods to Bennet and Heather. "I can loan you a skiff, if you can row out. In fact, now might be a good time to go. Tide's close enough to low point, that'll give you some time .... it's here, in the middle of the harbor ..." He turns around and points at the map with the red cloth pinned to it, right where the pin is; clearly, the red cloth is the marker for it. He stops, then looks around at the group, frowning. "Hmmm. Too many for a skiff ... well, we'll arrange something. JORMAN!" He stands up and bellows out the door to the corridor outside.

In the end, the man may be crusty, but he's efficient, and in short order the group is set up with a small open boat, just enough for them to row out to the ship. The rotting brigantine is clearly visible from shore, and is just as clearly in bad shape. Derelict is definitely the right word. It's listing just a little to starboard, the rudder trailing uselessly in its wake and tattered sails hanging in rags from the spars -- but somehow, it's maintaining a slow direction towards the harbor.

<OOC> Arlean says, "Anybody else want to do anything before you leave?" <OOC> Deanna does have anything. <OOC> Hethyr newp, is good to go. <OOC> Bennet is set. <OOC> Arlean says, "OK. Jokul, give me another Profession: Sailor roll. DC 10." GAME: Jokul rolls Profession/Sailor: (13)+6: 19 <OOC> Arlean says, "Aw yeah. You know your business. This is annoying but not /hard/." <OOC> Jokul says, "It'd be great if I DIDN'T ROW ALONE." <OOC> Jokul says, "Not that I'm pointing any fingers. OF COURSE NOT." <OOC> Jokul >.> <OOC> Arlean says, "Well, with that roll you can direct someone else to help you." <OOC> Jokul says, "(sshhhh, it won't be as funny like that)" <OOC> Arlean grins. <OOC> Bennet is up to assist, but more interested in getting a good long look. <OOC> Rhar can help row! <OOC> Arlean says, "OK manly man, pose it."

Well, at least to Jokul the boat feels somewhat natural, especially seeing as he's the first one to take to lowering himself down on it and almost automatically taking a pair of rows as he takes position right at the center, and-- then peers a look towards the others. "... Anyone else know how to row?" Well. Apparently not. Which causes only the faintest of sighs and a mutter of "Angoron watch over me..." before he settles down on the middle seating and waves everyone else down with the accompanied instruction of careful movement to NOT ROCK THE BOAT.

And so, hopefully without any incident involving misaligned weight and capsizing, the large Aesirian takes to rowing the boat carrying the entire group all on his lonesome (though apparently pretty considerable) strength into a steady slide across the water towards the Derelict. His back's turned to their actual destination, like that, so he isn't going to be putting any time into eyeing their target over -- he's merely focused on guiding the boat alongside the ship to where they can climb aboard. One grunt-accompanied row at a time. GRUNT.

"I'm.....not a rower. I've been on land most of my life." Deanna says as she sits down, putting her axe across her lap. She watches the derelict get closer and closer in silence.

Bennet does put some time into eyeing the ship. Is most of what he does. Not that it's helping a great deal. "Starboard, five points. Looks like a decent spot of climb on. I ain't seeing nothing ta name it yet, though."

<OOC> Hethyr says, "Too far out for perception checks, or...? Also, bout what time is it?" <OOC> Arlean says, "It's a little after lunchtime." <OOC> Arlean says, "Everyone go ahead and give me perception checks if you're watching the ship itself." GAME: Hethyr rolls perception: (8)+6: 14 GAME: Bennet rolls perception: (15)+7: 22 GAME: Deanna rolls perception: (7)+7: 14 GAME: Rhar rolls perception: (1)+12: 13 <OOC> Rhar sees no boat <OOC> Jokul says, "Clearly you're distracted by... Fish. Or.. Something."

As you approach the ship, the first thing all of you notice is that it /smells/. Worse, it smells like dead things. Decay, rotting seaweed, rotting flesh, and saltwater. Next -- the ship really is rotting. How it's afloat, let alone moving, is something of a mystery ... but it definitely is. Wood is gray and splintering, the sails are in rags, and a long hemp rope, slippery with algae, trails from a massive wooden beam that seems to be attached to the main mast, on the starboard side of the ship, right where Bennet said it was. Its end looks to have been cut off.

The skies overhead are cloudy, the air damp; a good fog will likely fall later tonight. Thankfully, though, the seas are calm, and no wind ruffles the harbor, so it's just ... damp. It's easy enough to bring the boat alongside the silent craft.

You paged Bennet with 'You got the name of the craft. It's called the Diamond Pride.'

Rhar could help row. They are sticks. She can hit water with sticks. But Jokul holds them. So she and Gurr stick their heads forward to catch the breeze of salty air. Both sniff, then stare down at the water for fish. And drool.

"Worry 'bout th'name after it's clear," Hethyr murmurs, shading her eyes and squinting across the water at the listing hulk. "Long as it's safe t'do, could jus' call in help from th'shore an' haul that thing in for a proper lookin' over." As they close, however, and the smell hits them, the khazad looses a long, slow sigh. "...But by th'smell of't, we gonna have a job ahead of us till we get there."

After a moment, all of you spot it ... something ... human-shaped ... moving up on the bow. Points of green light flash over the rail for just a moment.

You paged (Hethyr, Deanna) with 'You both see another one, further back.'

You paged Bennet with 'You see three of them.

Deanna coughs at the smell when it hits her nostrils. "I would keep this thing as far away from shore as possible." She then looks up and sees the humanoid figure. "And I'm going to assume that whomever they are, they're in the same state as the ship." She then looks to Bennet. "I imagine it's your field of expertise?"

Hethyr pages: Spellcraft or Knowledge/Religion check to narrow down what the light could be? You paged Hethyr with 'Knowledge:Religion

Bennet peers and squints, nodding towards a bit of sinage under a rotting bit of rope. "There. The 'Diamond Pride'. Not that it tells us-" The paladin cuts off as he spies a shape on the deck, eyeing it quietly. "Aye. Gonna guess those is more 'thing' than 'person'. Always chance of being wrong, of course. But iffen ya'll could stay out of the line of fire. I'd appreciate it."

GAME: Hethyr rolls knowledge/religion: (1)+7: 8

Rhar looks up when they bump into the bigger boat. And her nose wrinkles. "Rhar find people! Gurr find people!" They promised on the dock! So she and Gurr hop up to hop aboard. Or hop on the side and climb up to aboard.

You paged Hethyr with 'You have no idea, but that probably doesn't mean anything good.'

<OOC> Arlean says, "OK. Getting aboard will mean climbing. The rope seems to be sound, but it's coated with algae so it's slick."

GAME: Deanna rolls climb: (9)+6: 15 GAME: Rhar rolls climb: (2)+7: 9

You paged Deanna with 'You're good.'

And here Jokul lets out a huff of relief when the need for rowing finally ends, here -- though it's followed immediately after by a flash of an all-too excited grin. "If they're already dead then we won't have to worry about holding back, right?" Notably, he fails to say ANYTHING at Bennet's request to stay out of the line of fire. Or say anything of the honking-huge sword on his back.

Gurr covers most of the distance to the deck in a leap and scrambles up the rest of the way with his claws. Rhar doesn't have claws, so she has to use the rope,. The slippery rope. So she slips. But she manages to grab hold of less slippery rotten wood before falling into the water.

Bennet is having troubles. Between armor, age, and trying to keep his weapon handy, the Absolution slips a couple times, but manages to catch himself before sliding too far.

Hethyr is a dwarf; built like a brick, armed and armored like a metal-clad brick, roughly as upwardly mobile as a heavy brick, and, after roughly five feet of struggling up an algae-slick rope, falls into the water exactly like a brick. A-splash. Fingers dig into the side of the skiff, as she attempts, poorly, to tread water. "...Lil' help here?"

And Jokul was more of a seafaring Aesirian than the mountaineering Aesirian, too. And thus, we see the result of this. The hugely-armored man slipping back down to the skiff from the rope-- just in time to see the heavily-armored dwarf priest plop down into the water. And hanging on to the edge of the boat. "... Oh crap. Easy, easy..." The Aesirian hurriedly mumbles out, with the most caaaareful of steps towards where she's hanging from. Easy balancing, easy balancing, don't wanna tip the boat over now, see? And with a careful - though smooth - motion, he lowers down, grabs onto the dwarf with both hands and HEAVE-HO! Up the dwarf goes in incredibly thick arms to be settled back down onto the center of the skiff. "...There. Let's try to avoid that from now on, yah?"

But, rather than try to pull her up again (seeing as she's got hold of the rope at least), he instead grabs hold of the rope, himself, and HEAVES himself up in a quick little effort that brings him rolling up onto the deck, and-- staring at the three death-smelling creatures. Third time, apparently, is the charm; frustrated, sodden, with her compatriots in danger, Hethyr wraps the rope around her fists and hauls her way up the side of the ship, eyes alight with anger.

As the last of our heroes swings over the rail, everyone can now see -- and /smell/ -- their opponents quite clearly. Three of them are menacing the group -- likely once men, but with flesh now rotting off bones beneath seaweed-and-salt-smeared leather armor. Long, tattered hair streams, dripping, off of bare skulls; two raise seaweed-choked greataxes, now smeared with blood, and a third uses only rotted fists -- but those are quite nasty enough. The second ones brings that bloodied greataxe down at Hethyr, but it's nowhere close to on target as the cleric scrambles aboard.

"HEY!" Jokul growls on over at the creature when it smacks down on Bennet - right after he dodged away from it's first attack no less! - and in a bti of a fit of energetic anger, he slips his right hand up to the protruding handle of his greatsword on his back, and once drawn up, curls the fingers of his left hand along the hilt as well in order to bring the massive blade swinging downwards to slash vertically along the creature's length with a roar of "RIGHT HERE, YOU BASTARD!" Not that he's jinxing himself at all. OR IS HE?

Flesh and leather split open under the force of Jokul's mighty blow, and the creature staggers for just a moment. But ... does it maybe understand the challenge Jokul roared? It says nothing, but it brings both fists across in an answering strike that looks like and probably feels like a hammer blow -- the creature is /strong/ for its apparent fragility.

Numbers rolled change if they aren't. <OOC> Arlean says, "They are indeed undead."

Still focusing her rage at the one who hit her first, Deanna grips her battleaxe and roars her fury into her axe swing, putting a LOT of muscle into the strike of the axe this time. And boy does it cleave into the rather nasty smelling sailor.....

<OOC> Deanna says, "if they weren't undead. I'd be rolling a lot more attacks. It seems that Hethyr's divine patron favors her today - the third creature brings an unbloodied axe to bear, but doesn't bring it anywhere close to /her/ much though it tries to.

GAME: Arlean rolls 1d20+5: (8)+5: 13 <OOC> Arlean says, "Lucky for you, so does it. I'll wait for poses before advancing ." <OOC> Jokul will wait for Hethyr to pose before posting his.

Clasping the beaten-silver sunburst medallion hanging from her neck, Hethyr looks upon the remaining foes with a species of grim pity. "Draugr I name ya," she says, voice heavy and stern. "Poor and luckless sailors once you were, lost in darkness an' twisted by evil. In Daeus' name, you poor bastards, I pray you turn back t'yer rest, an' find peace in the light!" With these final words, a blast of fiery, golden-white radiance bulges outward, searing Deanna's opponent to a fine haze of ash, and scorching the other.

"Ghuck--?!" The blow from the creature comes as a surprise to Jokul, perhaps, what with it sending him skidding back a few inches, followed instantly by slightly red-hued saliva spilling out from his mouth as it's forced to open by air escaping from his lungs. But rather than let that get to him too much, he braces one boot against the deck and puts his weight back forward to redirect an upward-diagonal slash towards the creature with a growled-out "Piece o'--" ... Only for the sword to fly just over the thing's head. At least he realizes his mistake quick enough to lower his sword quickly again for the sheer purpose of intercepting another incoming counter-attack.

Good thing Jokul did that. The final remaining opponent looks badly scorched by the Sunlord's power, but relentless and unswerving, it brings those bony fists down with unnatural power -- only to miss altogether as Jokul's sword-lowering pulls him out of harm's way. At least the Sunlord's rays stopped some of the rancid and rotting flesh from falling off of it -- that in itself is an unholy mercy, although the burnt smell is only marginally better.

GAME: Arlean has cleared initiatives. <OOC> Arlean says, "Free RP for the moment. You're now on the listing deck of a ship, and it's as rotting as everything else."

Bennet turns to the remaining undead. Another roll of thunder, and another hole ripping the monster free from the mortal coil. "Acknowledge; targets silenced. Seal the Gate." The thunderbelcher's divine glow fades, and the Absolution blinks hards, his eyes returning to their natural baby blue. "Mmmm... unpleasant, but reckon kinda expected it. Careful of your step, don't want anyone breaking though to the below."

Exhaling loudly, Deanna puts her hands upon her knees and takes a few breaths. She also makes sure she's standing on something solid.....

"Hahhhhh..." Jokul's breath exhales out, and the massive sword is rolled along in his hand so that the blade goes propping into the wooden deck below -- and thus he can use the weapon as a leaning post with one hand, while the other rubs over his armor-covered chest. Might have broken some ribs, there. "... Think that was the crew?" The Aesirian voices out, with a grunt, and continues, then, to point out; "Ship like this needs more than three men to crew it."

"Everyone all right?" Hethyr asks, reaching back to take hold of her shield and secure it properly on her arm, nose wrinkling at the lingering stench of burned rot. "Yeh indeed they were, poor bastards... sailed through th'wrong chunk 'a water, they did... Father above, grant us the strength t'see our grim work through, an' may our enemy find peace in your light." Again, she takes hold of her medallion, and again the sunlight shines through her fist, soothing bruised and torn flesh.

<OOC> Hethyr burns another channel for healing. GAME: Hethyr rolls 2d6: (5): 5 <OOC> Hethyr says, "Bah."

Deanna exhales loudly and finally stands up fully. "Am now." She says looking about. "Do we want to look this ship over and find out if there's anything else here?"

Bennet nods. "Reckon so, though doubt that was all the crew. Figure rest be below deck, or maybe lurking somewheres. Reckon best check up here, then be sure the cargo."

Several of the group are now smeared with some of the most disgusting uck imaginable, and it smells no better. How this thing is afloat still is anyone's guess -- seaworthy is a stretch indeed to describe it, but floating it still is. The group now stands just behind the deck at the bow of the ship (just aft the quarterdeck, for those with the terminology). A chill dampness has settled over the ship.

<OOC> Arlean says, "OK. Shouldn't have cleared init order -- I will apply the healing next time we init." <OOC> Arlean says, "My fault." <OOC> Hethyr says, "S'cool. :3" <OOC> Jokul says, "Wait so who did that healing go to? >.>" <OOC> Hethyr says, "Everyone." <OOC> Arlean says, "Everyone. It's a channel." <OOC> Jokul says, "Ooo." <OOC> Arlean says, "So where are we looking?" <OOC> Hethyr advocates going to the other side of the ship first, make sure the deck is clear. <OOC> Deanna is with Hethyr. <OOC> Jokul says, "Aye Aye."

"I hear ya," Hethyr speaks up, hefting her warhammer away from its loop at her belt. "'Sides, can't be certain there ain't survivors 'till we crawl all over this thing. Be a damn cruelty t'just set it alight without bein' sure." Looking left, then right, she levels her hammer at the far end of the ship from their position. "Let's have a look first, see'f th'deck's clear. Then pop under."

Deanna nods to Hethyr. 'Better to clear above us and make sure everything's clear before we go below decks, just in case we need to run."

<OOC> Arlean says, "Perception checks." GAME: Deanna rolls perception: (12)+7: 19

Bennet nods. "Clear the place, no need to burn it. Cargo might still be of use to someone."

"Lil'better now," Jokul grunts out once the healing channeling's flowed into him, and with that he heaves the sword up again, to bring it to the ready proper once more over. "Cargo might not be much, but--"

GAME: Hethyr rolls reflex: (6)+2: 8 <OOC> Hethyr says, "...I sense a pattern." <OOC> Jokul says, "Do I have to pull you out of the water AGAIN?" <OOC> Arlean says, "You step on a soft spot and your foot goes through. Rising." <OOC> Rhar growls at missing all the hitting fun.

A quick search of the main deck of the ship turns up nothing except a lot of rotting wood and rope. The group has to watch their step and move carefully; not all of the deck is sound. Most pick up on soft spots in the wood and step around them; Hethyr manages to step into one and the wood breaks beneath her booted foot with a loud *CRACK* like a gunshot.

You paged (Jokul, Bennet, Deanna) with 'There’s also something moving around below decks; you can hear it when Hethyr almost falls through.'

<OOC> Jokul siiigh. Strength to pull her up (again)? <OOC> Arlean says, "Sure, fi you like. It's not too hard." GAME: Jokul rolls Strength: (9)+3: 12 <OOC> Arlean says, "Yeah." <OOC> Arlean says, "It doesn't go too far, but it does open up a hole below decks."

Bennet's gunshot might disapprove of the comparison, but the Absolution can do little about it. "Definitely more. Or something down there. Reckon we may as well go make the introductions." Fishing around in his pocket a moment, the cowpoke pulls out a gold capped gold, fiddling a moment before it glows with a soft light, hooked to his belt. (everburning torch)

<OOC> Arlean thumbsup. Light GET.

Jokul's eyes widen just a bit when Hethyr's boot goes through the deck, and... He steps over to loop his forearm underneath her arm and heave her upwards, once again. "You know," he grunts, with a grin down at the dwarf. "I'm starting to sense a theme here."

Nodding to Bennet, Deanna seems to keep walking towards the steps that leads below decks. She, apparently, has no fear of anything like this. 'I heard it too, Rifleman. Lets see if we can clear it out from below decks. Though, if something's down there, it's probably eaten through any food stores, or is probably dead as well."

"Sonofa--!" Heather swears as her foot goes through, braids swinging wildly as she tries to work her heavily-booted fot out of the hole her careless step has made. Thankfully, her armored kilt has enough structure that she doesn't fall further than calf-height. As Jokul hauls her out of her mess again, she throws the sailor a sour look. "Yeah, keep laughin'," she grumbles, dusting off her breeches and stepping away enough for Bennet to work his preparation-enabled genius.

<OOC> Bennet says, "Think we're ready to head down..." <OOC> Arlean nods, writing

You find the hatch that leads below decks easily enough -- in fact, it's open, swinging crazily by one hinge. Getting down is easy enough, going one by one, but it is quite dark down here. Bennet's ever burning torch proves a boon indeed, its warm light bobbing as he moves and casting eerie shadows on half-eaten wooden walls and glinting off pools of water on the floor. A rat scampers across a broken board. The list is more noticeable here, and there are places where the sea laps against the boards.

Oh and ... watch your head, tall folk.

The smell down here is stronger than above deck, but much the same - rot, decay, and seawater.

Glints of green -- and red -- are visible through the open doorway.

GAME: Note Using slams added to Dr2. <OOC> Bennet runs AFK for a few to feed cats. Shall return. <OOC> Arlean says, "So ... you're in the dark, looking at pinpoints of red and green fire. The red is pretty malevolent-looking." <OOC> Jokul says, "So... You're saying we should stab it?" <OOC> Arlean says, "They're not in reach, they're on the other side of the doorway from the room in which you stand." <OOC> Arlean says, "Doorway is 5'." <OOC> Deanna says, "Cramped for me. XD" <OOC> Arlean says, "Most things on a ship are likely to be." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Round One - Init 20.
It is now Hethyr's turn! Deanna is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Hethyr ended. <OOC> Hethyr says, "S'fine. XD" <OOC> Arlean says, "Hethyr, whatcha doing?" <OOC> Hethyr says, "So. It seems that this thing doesn't seem to like the torchlight, yes?" <OOC> Arlean says, "Hard to tell." <OOC> Bennet returns. <OOC> Arlean says, "They're not in range of the torch light yet though." <OOC> Hethyr says, "Would I have time to cast Light on a copper, and softball it toward the doorway?" <OOC> Arlean says, "Yup!" GAME: Hethyr casts Light. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 <OOC> Arlean says, "Roll to hit, it's an unmoving target so AC 5. I just wanna see if you put it where you want it." GAME: Hethyr rolls ranged: (19)+3: 22 <OOC> Arlean says, "Nice. It lands right where you want it and spills light into the next room. Pose it." <OOC> Hethyr banks it off the ceiling for good measure. :P GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Round One - Init 20.
It is now Deanna's turn! DC1 is next!

<OOC> Deanna says, "What do I see in the light?"

Hethyr drops a hand to her belt, pulling from her purse a single copper piece. "Seems t'me as it'd be fair foolish, walkin' right up there," she says, rubbing the coin between her fingers. "'Specially for them as walk inna light, as we're better off doin', yeah?" The coin glows with a soft, gentle white radiance, and with an upward quirk of her lips, she flicks the coin over the heads of the tallfolk up front, plonking it into the center of the doorway.

<OOC> Arlean says, "Two more of the creatures, plus a third one with red eyes and a blood-stained, tattered captain's coat, further back. The captain and one of the others have similar great axes." <OOC> Deanna says, "and neither of the greataxe people are near the door." <OOC> Arlean says, "Nope. Not within 10' of it." <OOC> Jokul says, "... Smash the doorway into something more open?" <OOC> Deanna says, "What about the third?" <OOC> Deanna says, "Not a bad idea, but I'm considering options." <OOC> Arlean says, "Third is further back in the room. at the edge of Hethyr's light." <OOC> Arlean says, "It's in low light range." <OOC> Deanna says, "all right. Do I need to kick the door in?" <OOC> Arlean says, "Nope. There is no door, just a frame." <OOC> Arlean says, "But the opening is only 5' wide. If you want to RAR SMASH and clear another 5', I'll let you do that." <OOC> Deanna says, "I move my way in, JUST in far enough to give everyone else a chance to fan out around me. Taking point, as it may be." <OOC> Deanna says, "Nah....no need." <OOC> Arlean says, "OK :)"

Deanna, upon seeing who all is below decks, Makes her way down the steps and into the room, but giving enough room for everyone else to come in behind her.

<OOC> Arlean says, "OK, 10' in. That's all your move?" <OOC> Deanna says, "dat's it" <OOC> Jokul suddenly wonders how the heck he's going to swing his massive sword in here. <OOC> Hethyr says, "Sunder!" <OOC> Arlean says, "Greatsword? You have enough space ... although you won't be doing the HASSAN CHOP thing." <OOC> Arlean says, "You're still technically a 5' creature with 5' reach, right?" <OOC> Jokul says, "I guess!" <OOC> Arlean nods. So there's still enough room but headroom is at a premium and you may have to modify your swing. <OOC> Arlean says, "No game effect -- RP effect only." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Round One - Init 19.
It is now DC1's turn! Bennet is next!

An evil bass laugh erupts from the red-eyed creature at the back. It looks like the others, but wears, instead of leather armor, a tattered and bloodstained captain's coat that once was deep blue. It now hangs in rags from rotting shoulders as it raises the greataxe in both hands. As it laughs, a cloud of misty vapor rises up from its bare once-feet, obscuring it entirely from view and leaving the room damp, chill, and almost impossible to see in. The light lights the vapor, not the creature within it.

GAME: Note Obscuring mist 20' radius centered on it added to DC1. <OOC> Arlean says, "Spellcraft anybody?" <OOC> Hethyr says, "Yo." <OOC> Jokul eyes the Cleric. GAME: Hethyr rolls spellcraft: (8)+6: 14 <OOC> Arlean says, "Nope." <OOC> Arlean says, "You don't know." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Round One - Init 16.
It is now Bennet's turn! Rhar is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Bennet ended. <OOC> Arlean says, "FYI, the other two are still visible, they're at the edge of the radius of the mist." <OOC> Bennet says, "Shall shoot one of the visible, and reload." <OOC> Arlean says, "OK. Roll it. You are 30' from it, shooting through the doorway. One has partial cover to you, the other does not." GAME: Bennet rolls 1d20+12: (16)+12: 28 <OOC> Arlean says, "BOOM. Damage sir." GAME: Bennet rolls 1d12+1+2d6: (9)+1+(10): 20 <OOC> Arlean says, "Question -- what type of weapon is this? B/P/S?" <OOC> Bennet says, "i think counts as P/B, but am not certain." <OOC> Arlean says, "What is it, exactly?" <OOC> Hethyr says, "Rifle." <OOC> Bennet says, "ThunderBelcher." <OOC> Hethyr says, "Minus the h." <OOC> Arlean says, "Oh, okay." <OOC> Hethyr says, "Yup, B/P" <OOC> Arlean says, "Thank ye kindly. It goes splutch. Pose it." <OOC> Rhar says, "Splutch?" <OOC> Hethyr says, "Did he just oneshot the mook?" <OOC> Arlean says, "He did. Divine bastard." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Round One - Init 14.
It is now Rhar's turn! Dr1 is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Rhar ended. <OOC> Arlean says, "Rhar?" <OOC> Rhar says, "So... what's left to hit with sticks and how far away is it?"

Bennet hesitates a moment, frowning as the apparent Captain disappears from view. Shifting focus, the Absolution offers a swift warning. "Ears." And thunder sounds in the enclosed space, loud, but not truely deafening. The encanted round tears a hole in the Undead, ripping them free towards final rest.

<OOC> Arlean says, "35' from you, on th other side of the doorway." <OOC> Arlean says, "There's one plus the thing now hiding in mist." <OOC> Rhar moves up with Gurr to get in it's face, but can't attack, so I'll buff instead. Posing. <OOC> Arlean says, "Buff?" <OOC> Deanna says, "She's a Cavalier...I think." <OOC> Arlean nods. Just need to know what. So ... Gurr is getting in its face, you're standing back and buffing for now? <OOC> Rhar tacticizes and gives everyone paired opportunists. <OOC> Rhar is sitting on Gurr. <OOC> Arlean says, "Be right back. goes to find APG" <OOC> Arlean says, "OK. For any creature that two people threaten, both get +4 on AoO."

Rhar and Gurr both growl at the one they can see. And the one they can't. "No hurt pack! Pack go for throat! Go for belly! Hit hard!" She yells out encouragement and targetting coordinates waving her two sticks threateningly. One stick is metal and sharp, the other is big, round, and flat. All the while Gurr darts them both in to the one visible thing's face. "Rhar!" It's polite to introduce yourself to strangers. Before you hit them with sticks.

<OOC> Arlean says, "Also, if your ally gets AoO, you do as well, even if you would not normally get an AoO, so long as you threaten them." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Jokul ended. <OOC> Arlean says, "Jokul." <OOC> Jokul says, "... Hum. How far away are slashable things from me?"

Introductions! The response isn't very polite -- apparently the green-glowing-eyed, rotting thing isn't much for friendly relations. It brings a pair of rotting fists smashing down at Rhar ... but it's not very slick, either, and it misses by a good margin.

<OOC> Arlean says, "45' and you do not have a direct line, so you can't charge." <OOC> Jokul says, "I'll... Uh. Round Two - Init 20.
It is now Hethyr's turn! Deanna is next!

<OOC> Jokul will also be all 'COME AT ME BRO' at them, he guesses? <OOC> Jokul >.> <OOC> Arlean says, "Can do that :) Speech is a free action when it's only a sentence or two." <OOC> Hethyr says, "So Jokul and Deanna are both roughly 35' from me, now?" <OOC> Arlean says, "OK cat, you need loving NOW?" <OOC> Arlean says, "About, yes." <OOC> Hethyr says, "Bah, now I see the problem with Cleric spells. Okay, taking a double-move to reach the backs of the front line." <OOC> Arlean says, "OK. Post it"

Watch your damn head, indeed. Jokul likely just barely avoids bumping his head on the upper doorframe, too, but he still gets through into the room, as tight as it might be. And straight into a beeline through what crampiness there is, towards the creatures on the other side. He's slow in armor and there's really not enough room for the kind of maneuvaribility that'd get him there to smash a sword in quickly, so he deliberately takes it that way, too -- sword held up in an effort to interpose a larger figure to the creatures, aligned into the space in between them and the not-so-melee people within the party. You gotta go through me first, bastards. Do ignore the faint bit of blood there on the corner of my mouth, by the way.

As the lead element breaks away and advances, Hethyr sticks close by their heels; Hammer and shield set and ready, she keeps one eye out for damage, as she awaits the proper opportunity to support the front.

Deanna runs her way around Rhar and Gurr to make sure that she's not hit by the undead near them. You might say she's trying to draw the thing's attention away from Rhar.

<OOC> Arlean says, "Deanna ... guess who :)" <OOC> Deanna says, "is it the captain?" <OOC> Arlean says, "Ayup" GAME: You damaged Deanna for 13 points. 22 remaining. <OOC> Arlean says, "Roll Fort save." I'll get to it..."

The mist is silent ... and then, from seemingly nowhere, a vague outline of the captain's coat half-emerges from the mist. It's the greataxe, though, that Deanna can see clearly as it crashes down with unnatural force at the barbarian.

Bennet frowns at the fog, and mutters softly to his gun. The weapon glows with a soft grey light, and rolls with distant thunder as it fires. The wisps of fog chun the the wake of the bullet, but the Captain remains untouched.

"No hurt pack!" Rhar reminds of the ultimatum as she swings her sticks at the thing. Only the sharp one hits. Gurr darts in at its legs, but chomps between them.

<OOC> Arlean headshakes. Fires dice. Miss. Will wait for poses before proceeding.

The sharp one did some damage, though, and frost rimes the rotting flesh as it answers back -- or tries to. Rhar is proving a more difficult target to hit, and seaweed-wrapped fists once more slam into the deck next to her.

"--Okay then," grunts a certain Jokul, primarily for himself, after glancing towards the general direction of shaded-to-heck used-to-be-captain -- and after a very careful assessment of the situation, he decides to step towards the not-captain of the two creatures in the room, instead, and swing his giant sword towards it! Unfortunately, he forgets that there's hardly any headroom to spare in the place, and thus the blade whiffs into the ceiling, which in turn results in the force of the swing getting reduced and misdirected. Damnit.

GAME: Note Protection from Evil +2 to AC and saves added to Deanna. <OOC> Arlean says, "+2 (deflection) to AC, +2 to all saves, Deanna." <OOC> Deanna says, "Okie." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Clankstomp clankstomp clankstomp goes the Khazad priestess, her shield hand glowing, reaching up to touch the arm of the barbarian. "Fight on, friend," she says, "for even in the belly of the darkness, the sun shines at your back." Grinning as the radiance takes hold of the barbarian creeping around her to form a thin outline of sunlight, Hethyr steps back, eyes turning next to the young Aesir.

Turning away from the 'minion', Deanna dives right into the fog and cleaves air.

<OOC> Arlean says, "Pose it."

Bennet holds steady a moment, blasting a freash round directly into the head... of the captain's shadow. Within the fog, was hard to tell the two apart. The Absolution tsks softly, and rapidly chambers a fresh round.

BONK! That's the sound of stick hitting face when Rhar smacks it. Gurr bites down on the leg this time. And he tears it clean off. So the thing falls down and doesn't get up again.

<OOC> Arlean says, "Er?" <OOC> Hethyr says, "Or was conceal just vs range." <OOC> Arlean says, "He still has partial conceal." <OOC> Arlean says, "Not total as he does to range." <OOC> Hethyr nodnod. <OOC> Arlean says, "Call high or low, Jokul." <OOC> Jokul says, "Should I just skip crit confirm since it probably doesn't apply to this guy anyway? >.>" <OOC> Jokul says, "High." <OOC> Hethyr nods. Luckily, as a holier-than-everything-in-the-room know-it-all, I have options that give zero craps about concealment. :D <OOC> Deanna has it with Moonshadow. XD <OOC> Deanna hasn't used it YET! <OOC> Hethyr says, "Channel resist!" <OOC> Hethyr says, "If we can't hurt him, DAEUS WILL." <OOC> Arlean says, "I was wondering when you were gonna do that." <OOC> Hethyr was trying to buff people first! <OOC> Hethyr says, "But then the bastard had to go all middle-finger-at-crits..." Inevitably, the target in front of Jokul goes down courtesy of Rhar and Gurr - which does leave the Aesirian looking a bit disappointed, yes - and he spins around to the remaining target in the room and goes stepping besides Deanna, sword held up, to make a grand swing to the captain's neck-- Except the neck is not there. What the HELL?

<OOC> Arlean says, "Pose it. THAT got you something." GAME: Arlean advances the initiative order.

Round Four - Init 20.

And having watched her companion's best efforts foiled by that damnable fog, Hethyr plunks her hammer against the ground, holding up her medallion with her shield hand. "ENOUGH! THINK YOU CLEVER, ROTTING CAPTAIN OF A DEAD VESSEL?" As if to punctuate the cleric's rage, the medallion bursts into dazzling, white-gold light. "I NAME YOU DRAUGR, I JUDGE YOU COWARDLY, AND I CALL UPON THE FACE OF MY FATHER TO BURN THE DARKNESS FROM YOUR PUTRID FLESH!" And so it does, the purifying sunlike radiance charring and blackening the captain's foul, water-bloated flesh.

Really frustrated, and mad (GEE! I WONDER!), Deanna decides to do something random (as if she's thinking right now). She takes a vertical swing. Not an overhead swing, but an underhand swing. yeah. That connects.....with his crotch. If this guy wasn't dead.....he is now....and talking in a high voice.

GAME: Bennet rolls 1d12+12+2d6: (11)+12+(6): 29 <OOC> Arlean says, "It evaporates." <OOC> Arlean says, "REVENGE SWEET REVENGE"

Bennet takes a slow breath, and holds steady, waiting for the fog to swirl away and give him a view, if only for an instant. An instant is all he needs, the divine round blasting though the rotting Captain's torso.

The onslaught of Deanna's fury coupled with Daeus' wrath seems to have given the thing pause. It swings wildly at Deanna, one more time, but the axe buries itself in the wood, and a breath later, Bennet's bullet simply ... eliminates it. The fog dissipates, drifting away moments later into a chill dampness, leaving only ruined armor and seaweed-choked great axes behind. The hold is ... strangely empty. As if ... whatever was here has been long gone. How long ago did this hulk die?

"No hurt pack!" Rhar reminds the pieces of corpses what happens when they don't listen. Then she looks around. "More stinky people?" They're supposed to find people.

"Doesn't look like it," Hethyr replies, lowering her medallion and hefting her hammer onto her shoulder. "Like as not we'll wanna look just in case, but, I'm thinkin' this was it."

<OOC> Arlean says, "OK. Free RP."

Bennet relaxes slowly, peering around a moment before shrugging. "Think that was all of 'em. Don't look like be much for cargo. But might be a log or something useful around here someplace. likely too rotted to be of use, but reckon we best check to be sure."

Rhar nods. Twice. She and Gurr then start moving around and sniffing to search. At least the stinky people are easy to find.

Once again, Deanna leans over and tries to catch her breath. "Ugh. I hate undead." She says exhaling hard. "I think that was the last of them." She says panting hard.

And so with that informal there, Jokul rolls the greatsword around in one hand, and brings it up to the sling-scabbard set to his back for safekeeping, for the time being, complete with an exhalation of fatigued breath. "Captain's cabin might be on the other end of the ship, me's thinkin'. Log could be there." Just a sailor's guess.

A search of the ship proves Jokul quite correct -- but the only thing you find in the captain's cabin is a rotting leather binding, the pages wet and stuck together. Taking it back might reveal more about the ship ... if you can get the pages loose. Other than the great axes, nothing else is left behind. It would seem that this thing has been derelict for a long, long time. At least the smell is ‘’starting’’ to fade, replaced with a chill dampness and old wood. It's now eerily quiet.

Bennet mmms. "We best get going. With the crew gone, no promise this thing will last much longer. Let the harbormaster deside what ta do with it."

Deanna nodnods. "That's not a bad idea." She says as she stands up, not straight, but stands up. She then heads for the door. "No idea if the specters were holding this place together or not."

After a few moments' effort proving Jokul's guess more or less correct, Hethyr picks up the moldered old binder, gingerly and as close to her fingertips as possible. "Might be as he'd know someone who could fix this up, even a little," she says, lifting a shoulder. "Me, I'd even pay th'man who'd do the restorin' out my pocket. Y'all do *not* find draugr onna ship without a powerful tragic tale spinnin' in their wake." Following the barbarian toward the door, she glances back over her shoulder. "...Can't say's I like th'Captain bein' a cut above, though..."

<OOC> Arlean says, "So you guys are going to get off the ship, and take the ship's log with you?" <OOC> Hethyr is, yus. <OOC> Arlean says, "Cool. You can do that. Getting down the rope is a whole lot easier than getting up ti was." GAME: Deanna ends her rage. GAME: Arlean removes the timestop. Timestop by Arlean has left. GAME: You remove the timestop. <OOC> Jokul says, "I have to be the only one who does the rowing on the way back too, I'm sure." <OOC> Jokul says, "HEAVE-HO!" <OOC> Hethyr XD <OOC> Arlean says, "Gonna toss the dwarf over side?" <OOC> Rhar can row! <OOC> Bennet says, "Only if you put it like that. ;)" <OOC> Jokul says, "I am debating that, Arlean. >.>" <OOC> Arlean hahahahaha. I bet if you asked nicely the paladin might help you row. <OOC> Arlean says, "Anyway .. you guys make it back to shore without too much trouble, although there's a fog beginning to roll in as you row into the harbor." <OOC> Arlean says, "And that's all I have for tonight. Thanks, all of you, for coming, and I hope you had a good time! Comments/questions/rotten eggs?" <OOC> Jokul says, "For how many days are we going to smell?" <OOC> Deanna says, "I'm glad we finished before the fog rolled in." <OOC> Arlean says, "Depends. How often do you bathe?" <OOC> Deanna dives into the sewers...they smell better. <OOC> Jokul says, "I suspect a lot more often than usual, now." <OOC> Deanna XD <OOC> Rhar took one for her wedding! <OOC> Arlean says, "But yeah. All of you probably want a bath. BIG TIME. That was nasty." <OOC> Arlean says, "Both in smell and what it left ON you."

Bennet takes a quick bath as soon as he's able. A second will be had after he gets back to the Temple. He'll check back with the HarborMaster in a few days, to learn if the log held anything of interest, or if there was any record of the ship.
