  • Title: Seal the Northern Gate!
  • Emitter: Raethon
  • Characters:
  • Place: Rune, Northern Gate
  • Time: Sept. 27 2016
  • Summary: The Dranei resume their assault, but attack the northern gate. In an effort to barricade the Northern Gate again, Raethon calls for adventurers to cover him while he repairs and resets the gate.

Are you up for the challenge?

Once again, the assault has begun on Rune. The Dranei are relentless in their assault in attacking the walls and dome, with Rocs flying through big enough cracks in the dome. More Dranei have charged into the city, except for one gate, which a wizard has sealed up himself.

Walking down a road, Raethon seems to have grabbed a couple of apprentices to assist him in taking care of another gate that has been blown open, in this instance, the northern gate.

This particular intersection of the roads is where Raethon waits to meet up with people that would answer his call for assistance.

Alik arrives, running on tiny little gnome legs, glaring in all directions. He's no longer even emotional about the destruction of his homeland... they will rebuild, and he's shed all the tears he's going to. Now there is only vengeance.

The siege began, and has yet to end. The large gray construct was directed to Rune at the outset and remains present in the city. One breach was contained, now there is need for another to be. Multi-purpose Assault Construct designate Beta-One-Gamma is only one unit, but redeploys as required. It's limbs are neither small nor quick as it moves with a large, heavy, plodding strides.

Ga'Elian and Astraea approach side-by-side, each riding a griffon. As they come to a stop together in the Llyranesi wizard's presence, the griffon in the mithral barding flutters its wings and ruffles its neck feathers. The other griffon swishes its tail excitedly and emits a deep, rumbling purr/growl. Ga'Elian says, "We're here to help."

"You know, with how often I am finding myself here, I'm starting to consider just making camp here," booms the voice of a certain Aesir warrior, heralded alongside his voice by the subtle metallic grind of his enormous sword against the mithral plates along his shoulder. "Rather than just getting teleported every few goddamn hours." His stomps stop with a heavy THUD of one boot not that far from Raethon, but rather than looking to the elf, his eyes instead settle on the gate. OR what remains of it anyway. "So this is what it is this time, huh? How much time do we have before the Dran company gets to it?"

War is not wholly something that Astraea would want to take part in, but it may get her some answers. The half-sil is astride a griffon, balanced easily and with longbow in hand. Her cloak -- ratty edges and all -- is drawn about her and the hood up over her dark hair. She seems content to allow Ga'Elian to speak for them, reaching a hand out to bury fingers, soothingly, in Thistle's feathers. She looks towards Mr. Big Sword, then to the gate. Perhaps awaiting the answer. Alik greets the familiar griffon-rider and golem gruffly, and nods to the new griffonrider. "Time enough," he adds grimly to Jokul, "if waste it we do not."

"They've been battering the gate for a few hours now." Rae says looking right down the road at the gate. "Hopefully we've got a couple of minutes before....."

  • BOOM*

The gate explodes and goes sailing over Rae's head...which he catches with a spell before it sails too far. Rae didn't even flinch.

"How about that....they learned how to use explosives. It's a miracle." Rae says in a flat tone of voice.

He then takes a deep breath. "All right. Nothing gets through. If it walks through the gate, it dies. no exceptions. Ga'Elian, I need you to secure the skies. Help is on the way but it'll take a little bit for them to get here."

That is when a few Draenei begin to run their way through the now open gates. And Rae makes a face. "well...no time to ask if you trust me, Jokul." His staff stamps on the ground and jokul begins to lift off the ground.....Rae thon then flicks a hand forward and Jokul goes sailing towards the Dranei.....

"...What do you mean do I tr-WHOOOOOOO?!"

Jokul appears to be flying towards the advancing Dranei horde.

Most people would probably consider this to be an awful arrangement, but while the Aesir is still in the air, he actually *grins*.

"Saves me the trouble."

It's hard to tell if his feet landed on the ground first, or if it was the giant sword smashing into the ground that brought him to a stop. Either way, the cease of motion on the part of the Amazing Flying Aesir comes with the most unfortunate Dranei soldier at the point of the formation getting split in twain length-wise before the oversized, rough blade smashes into the pavement and crushes the cobblestone there with a loud CLANG.

Ga'Elian speaks a couple key words as his griffon takes to the skies above the battle. He nocks an arrow, looking around for the best targets to loose his shaft into.

Alik nods to MAC. "Agreed." He grabs his death ray and fires into the gate, reinforcing the dark cloud with a stinky fart-cloud that nauseates the Dranae caught in the gate.

Four manage to make it past the gate as Jokul 'dives' onto the scene. They immediately set up Jokul, but one is so nauseated that he pukes...and slips on his own vomit. One manages to scrape Jokul's armor, and the other gets a good hit in...

If anyone was close enough to JOkul, they might actually consider him *insane*. Why? When he's charged by the first of the Dranei, and a sword slips through his armor, he doesn't wince, he doesn't scream in pain or back away.

He just still GRINS, and even tells the responsible Dran, "That's the spirit."

Right before a flash of glinting adamantium flashes horizontally through the air with the swing of his sword, and the upper bodies of Dranei are sent flying through the air, trailing with a spray of blood.

Lightning flies towards the entrance and obstacles are laid down for the Dran to go through. A few make it through, but are cut down by the menacing Jokul.

Ga'Elian takes off on his griffon, but a group of Rocs begin to dive towards him, intending on cutting him off.

KRAK-BOOM!!

A lightning bolt arcs from Raethon's position into the lead Roc, which sets off an explosion that drops the other two in the formation, flaming towards the ground. And Rae turns his attention back towards the recreation of the gate, along with the apprentices. There are plenty of other Rocs in the sky however...

It takes a few long seconds for Astraea to shake off the concussive wave from the gate exploding. It's Thistle shifting under her and letting out a cry that brings the young woman back to the moment. She draws an arrow and looks up, sharply, to the rocs above. Sitting up straighter on the griffon, she begins tracking one, hood falling back from her hair and upswept ears as she does. Wind, however, draws her arrow enough off track that it goes harmlessly by the roc's wing.

Alik switches weapons and concentrates his fire on taking down Dranei as they come out of the dark cloud in the gate, hoping to form a big pile of dead Dranei there over time. Maybe it'll slow them down. Maybe it won't. Maybe he just likes having a big pile of dead Dranei. Hey, don't judge. Everyone needs a hobby. He fires at something, luckily hitting a Dran he didn't see. Take that!

GAME: You damaged Alik for 8 points. 41 remaining.

Drawn by the explosions, one of the rocs circles around Ga'Elian and Erithamiel as they reach fighting altitude. Erithamiel screeches a growling SCREE that rends the air as his rider looses three arrows. All strike their mark, unsettling the garganutan bird so badly that it goes careening into the ground, and smashes itself upon the pavement.

The Dranei are starting to shoot arrows before they send their warriors through. One manages to hit Alik in the shoulder, but the rest are wild shots at targets they can't see. Two more attack Jokul's back, scraping off his armor.

IN THE SKY...

As one Roc goes down, three more takes it place behind Ga'elian, firing arrows at Ga'Elian and his griffon, but they're really horrible shots. GAME: Raethon advances the initiative order.

A sword rebounds off of the mithril on Jokul's back, and another one off the giant sword he brings into the weapon's way. There's still more Dran. And more and more. But he couldn't seem happier, in that moment. How could he not be happy? AFterall...

Any which direction he swings his blade, he's bound to kill something.

It's witnessed by him turning around to come face the two that attempted to get upon his back, and the turn brings his sword into a backstroke that cuts yet another soldier down.

Targets everywhere, surrounded by fountains of blood.

For some, it's hell, but for someone like him, it's right where he belongs.

The Dran are starting to get a little more bold, trying to pour more people into the entrance than can be shot at. While this is rarely good, the Dran are starting to slow each other down. They are none too bright.

IN THE SKY

More arrows are being shot at Ga'Elian, when Ga'Elian can hear....faintly *pop pop pop*. One of the rider's gets a hole in his head....and the roc itself gets the same.

Then a fairly large boulder flies up from the ground to catch the second roc in it's arc......

MAC-B1G evaluates unit desginate Jokul's current situation as tenable and traverses its weapon back to the breach with the increase in threat density. The charged particles detonate on contact, reducing one threat to red paste and creating another obscuring cloud. "Threat density increasing. Rate: 7.36 threats per second."

There's a lingering look for the rocs, but Astraea leans a bit against Thistle's back, nudging the griffon forward just a smidge. Enough to stay out of range -- one hopes -- of any other falling rocs. As she does, she's nocking another arrow and drawing it up. There's a lot going on by the gate that makes it difficult to see wholly clearly, but she can see //enough//. The arrow lets fly and goes through one Dran, carrying him right into another. She's already drawing another...

Alik continues to fire on Dranei as they come out of the dark cloud in the gate. The pile of corpses is growing. He approves. He targets one Dranei attacking Jokul and blows the fucker off his back. As the magical and boulder-throwing artillery reduce Ga'Elian's pursuers to only one, his griffon cleverly out-maneuvers the gi-normous bird, just as the ranger lets fly another volley of arrows. Again, his shots do sufficient damage to send the roc into freefall, carried forward by its previous momentum for a crash landing that breaks its neck upon the ground. Erithamiel squawks again, his bestial blood exulting in wild battle-fury. Meanwhile, the rider prepares for his next target...

After the dran on Jokul's back is shot down....no more Dran pour through the gate. Have they stopped the assault? Victory?

  • BOOM*

Guess again....

When someone looks up, there is a very sizeable hole above the gate in the dome....

And a fist that's poking through it.

That's right guys...it's a giant, and it's looking to step over the gate.

  • BOOM*

Excuse me....it already has.

The Dran have all but withdrawn. The giant busting through the barrier is particularly menacing for the group on the ground. "I need a few more seconds and that thing out of my way before I can repair the gate and barrier!" The giant lets out a feral roar that can be heard from all over....

Including the sky. A roar of that nature is sure to draw Ga'Elian's attantion. It's also gotten the attention of a small group of wizards, who are flying, and carrying clerics of ELuna towards the group, who heal them right up......and take cover...

"Is that it?!" Jokul growls towards the suddenly suspiciously unbusy gate and spreads both his arms out provocatively. "That all the Dran army ha--"

And then he lightly bounces with the shockwave of the actually-giant foot landing on the other side of the wall, and his head snaps over to peer at it, wide-eyed. "...They have a giant."

...Slowly, Jokul's lips spread into an outright unsettling smile, and something flares up within his eyes.

"They have a giant."

So of course Jokul does as Jokuls do. Which in this case equates to him running after the giant, and dropping one knee down to the ground to shift him into a slide along the ground -- a slide that carries his sword to slashing deep through the back of the gargantuan beast's ankle. Deep enough, certainly, that a second after he's slid through, a wide spray of blood showers the ground behind him.

A giant. Astraea just sort of stares for a moment, but it's Thistle moving forward just a few paces that brings her out of it. The woman shakes herself a bit and draws back on her bow. She aims high. Who knows, maybe she'd get lucky and land one in its eye- nope. Just the shoulder. And on something that big? Well, it might as well just be a splinter.

Ga'Elian watches the giant birds get replaced by a giant... Giant. He fires three arrows at the hulking brute, wounding it good, and tells his mount, "Erithamiel, attack!" as he guides his steed to the back of the enormous head.

Alik pulls out his theramin-like death ray once more and targets the giant enemy, burning a black stain on his forehead and dropping him like so many tons of griffon-chow.

The Giant thinks nothing of the 'insects' that are flitting around it, and goes to swat at Ga'Elian and his griffon in the air. the only problem is, this giant is not wearing any real armor. It thought itself invincible, but it was not. the combination of death rays, arrows and the fact that Jokul severed it's achilles tendon on one shot makes it regret assaulting Rune for the rest of it's life.

All 5 seconds of it...

The giant begins to pitch forward, which is bad for Rune and everyone else there since it's weighs at least a ton. Suddenly, something hits the center of it's chest and catapaults the giant outside of the barrier as the apprentices put the gate back on it's hinges. Rae had his staff pointing at the giant as it flies out of the barrier, and he directs the rest of his attention towards the gate....sealing it, and that portion of the dome as well.

"You guys did better than I thought you would. Sorry if it sounds arrogant."

Jokul was JUST going to turn to the gate after the giant was felled, but he only comes to face to it getting put back together.

He actually looks disappointed.

So instead, Jokul rests his massive sword upon his shoulder again, and goes stomping away from the gate. "You know, Ray," he calls towards the wizard. "You could have waited like ten more seconds. I was *just* starting to have fun."

He has a very odd understanding of 'fun'.

MAC-B1G observes the combined assault neutralize the large threat. Its weapon retracts and condenses to stow upon its scapular plate. "Threat eliminated." Faceplate pans to the gate that was removed and is re-emplaced. "Breach sealed. Task successful."

Alik nods, contentedly. "Giants even worse than Dranei," he observes, spitting on the creature's corpse.

Ga'Elian swerves to avoid colliding with the giant as it falls. Instead he blows a long deep blast on his horn and brings Erithamiel to a landing at the beak of one of the fallen rocs. He dismounts and stows his bow back inside his quiver, then proceeds to cut the upper beak off of the bird's head with his dagger. After that, he plucks a score of pinion feathers from the humungous wing.

Putting aside her own bow, Astraea urges Thistle forward. The griffon doesn't fly so much as it sort of hops and then glides down towards the others. It brings her closer to the gate and the others so that she can watch the apprentices at their work. "It was... not what I expected for something so big." But even big things must fall to rays of death.

Raethon looks towards those gathered and makes a bit of a face, but smirks at Jokul. "There's more gates to seal, but I'm concentrating on the defense of Rune for the time being. I'm sealing the gates one at a time because it takes a good deal of resources to seal it the way I have. And the Council of Rune doesn't like my methods." he then looks to Alik. "Once the gates are seal and Rune is safe for the short run....I'll start looking at assault. We're not done yet. Rest up. I imagine they'll try the east gate next."

"Threat tactics were inefficient," the construct explains. "It's defenses were limited."

"Then I will be at the east gate," Jokul declares with a completely nonchalant flick of his free hand -- he's already on his way to stomping along. "If I'm lucky, maybe there will be a giant there that will actually put up a fight."

Once done with the grizzley task of collecting his trophies, Ga'Elian mounts again, and rides back to the others. "That gets the blood pumping. I was just about to let Erithamiel join the fun." He affectionately pats his steed's feathery neck, and says, "But he did some mighty fine flying." He looks at the others and says, "Always good fighting in your company." Alik nods. "Better to be fighting the Dranei in Dran, not Rune. But here they are, so here we fight them." He pauses. "Rumors of Dran plague... you hear also?"

There's a glance towards Ga'Elian as the elf joins them. Astraea then looks to Thistle and brushes her fingers through her own griffon's feathers. "I wonder how they got a giant on their side." For all their rubbish piling through the gate itself, she's likely assuming they're not even smart enough to do such a thing. The young half-sil looks to the others, then back from whence they came. Away from the gate and the bodies being left to bleed. "I must find someone."
