PrP: Into Hagsmarsh, Part 3

From Tenebrae
Jump to navigation Jump to search

With the fearsome ochre jelly now reduced to a harmless pool of lifeless sludge, the way forward through the swamp is once again clear. Consulting the map suggests you aren't far from your target's ultimate destination, the location of the legendary treasure of Hagsmarsh. A quick inspection of the jelly's lair is enough to confirm no human remains, so it seems likely he survived at least this far. If you forge ahead at the same pace you've been going, the group should reach the lair within a few hours, well before sundown.

"Onward and into the jaws of fate, I suppose," Eleria muses as their enemy falls, wiping off her hands on her thighs. She winces at a twinge in her shoulder, and pulls out a wand, waving it over the lingering injury. "I do believe we're all in fairly good health?"

Cesran nods, "Well it at least he did not get eat by the ochre, although it makes me wonder how he got past it." He shrugs a little bit as he continues to look around trying to stay on the path.

Kanyk nods quietly in Eleria's direction. "Yes, I believe we should press on. We are losing daylight." He casts one more glance in the pool of goo, pondering about how such a being would come into existence, before starting to slowly trek forward. "We should keep our eyes open. We almost stepped right into that thing." He then turns to Cesran. "I imagine if he needed to he could have outrun it. That, or the ochre was placed here to slow our progress. We should be cautious."

Sonja says, "It's a possiblity that it could've been. Kanyk is right, we should press onward.""

An hour passes. The deeper into the swamp the group trudges, the nastier it gets. Some parts of this route require wading in muck that goes up to the waist. The only saving grace is that this muck seems free of leeches and oozes, at least thus far.

You paged Eleria with 'You hear something faint like the snapping of a twig, and movement behind a large tree some distance away. It looks vaguely humanoid. You get the distinct feeling you are being watched.'

Eleria lets out an abrupt hiss, eyes snapping to the side and peering at something a long way off. She shivers. "We're being watched, fellows. Keep walking," she whispers, studiously trying to make it look like she /didn't/ notice anything, while straining her eyes to observe their hidden observer.

Kanyk slows as soon as he hears Eleria, but immediately picks his pace back up. "Well, since we know they are there, at least they can't sneak up on us." He keeps walking, almost as if he hadn't slowed at all. He keeps his head on a swivel, however, just as anyone walking near the front of the group should.

Tannin walks alone a little ahead, for the moment, of her paladin-friend's aid getting over the last bit, wagging her neck as to crack it, casually, "<something you don't understand in syldanari>"

Tannin walks alone a little ahead, for the moment, of her paladin-friend's aid getting over the last bit, wagging her neck as to crack it, casually, in the El;ven tongue, "Watched by how many, or perhaps our charge of rescue? He'd know as well as we to watch."

Cesran merely nods a little bit in that he heard what Eleria said. He resists the temptation to look over his shoulder and he continues to look around like he was doing. He doesn't see anything, but he was never trained in spotting so it's not surprising to him that he can't spot anyone.

There's no further movement or sound other than the ambient sounds of the marsh. Perhaps whatever or whomever Eleria spotted has some motive other than ambush. Or it's just waiting for a better opportunity. In any case, there are paths forward which would go near the tree where whatever it is might be hiding, and paths which avoid it.

"The western-most paths take us by the thing's hiding place," Eleria whispers, "adjusting" her longbow's lay against her shoulder, her hands wrapping around the straining wood nervously. "The other paths take us away, perhaps avoiding it. Just one, as far as I can tell. It doesn't seem to be moving."

Tannin :stops, worrying at something in her eye, "<something you don't understand in sildanyari>"

Kanyk pauses. "If whoever is watching us is the person we are looking for, then we should take a chance and see. Of course, it may not be, and it could be a being that poses some danger to us, but how can we be for sure unless we get close enough?" He unfurls his wings calmly, letting the majestic wingspan stretch out to its full length before returning. He looks back towards the others. "I suggest we go see what it is that is spying on us."

"Very well," Eleria murmurs, a tinge of nervousness tightening her voice. "Let's go. I don't think it's moving quite yet."

"We can keep an eye on it, of course. I vote we go and take a look as well, ut our ultimate goal is to find this person." Sonja says softly as she continues to walk, her Earthbreaker on her shoulder.

Cesran nods, "Sounds good to me." He says softly as he has his spells ready to take on his mystery person.

Tannin gestures toward the side of the western way, for Kanyk, "We've yet to meet anything that looks or listens yet, but I think the subtler approach is spent if they do. If you see a way we might investigate, we might try it. It could be the man we're here to rescue, expecting monsters, or ...otherwise. "

Whatever figure Eleria spotted seems quite effectively hidden behind the massive tree stretching out of the bog. There does not appear to be any sign of further movement right now.

As the group approaches the tree, a creature suddenly emerges from behind it. It's humanoid, though it is covered in so many layers of filthy animal hides roughly sewn together that it is difficult to identify an exact species. It is hunched over, grasping a large wooden staff, and speaks in a gravelly voice. "What business have you in the Hagsmarsh, defiliers?" It practically spits, waving the staff menacingly.

Cesran jumps back a little bit as the man emerges from behind them and he spins around his hands ready to cast a spell. He looks at the others and he will lets the others do the talking before he opens his mouth.

As the creature presents itself, Sonja, being out front, answers quite candidly and honestly. "We are looking for someone. Perhaps you know where this person is?" She says speaking of the person they are looking for (whom the player has forgotten). "If you could aid us, we could find this person and leave the marsh quickly."

Eleria 's eyes widen and she lets out a gasp when she sees how...well, unfortunate-looking the creature is. The diminuitive elf looks baffled at the question, but when Sonja steps forward, Eleria relaxes a bit. Her head tilts and she asks, hesitantly, "Would you be the titular Hag of the Hagsmarsh, then? Umm..." Looking the figure up and down, Eleria frowns. "Ma'am?" she hazards.

Kanyk peers at the humanoid, taking notice of the staff. As it is waved around, the Egalrin Monk reflexively takes a step back. He doesn't uncoil from his stance, and seems a bit tense. After Sonja and Eleria speak, he does as well. "My name is Kanyk. Like they said, we are searching for someone, who we believe to have gotten lost in the 'marsh. If you could assist us..."

"I am no hag! Nor am I a /ma'am/!" The hunched creature replies angrily, shaking his staff at the group. That apparently did not get things off on the right start. "I am all that remains of the Circle of the Hagsmarsh. This is not a place for your kind. I have felt your presence here, stomping through our land, killing our creatures, slaying the innocent inhabitants of the swamp for your own selfish ends. Your defilement ends now. Leave, and harm no other creatures."

Tannin nods, to the creature, saying, mildly, as possible, "Indeed not, gentle... dweller in this place. And no defilers are we. Not a one among us would wish to defile this place," and she lowers her tone a bit, "If we had the merest notion how. In fact, with us," she nods to Eleria, "We've brought with us one most *dedicated Druidess* of the Green, in hopes of averting any such tresspass. Nonetheless. We're charged with the rescue of an over-bold fellow who may yet be... " She looks around, "Both in peril to himself an inconvenience to your peaceful days."

Sonja says, "Like I already said, we are looking for someone that came into the hagsmarsh before us. As she said..." Gesturing to Tannin. "....we do not wish to defile this place. If you would assist us in finding this person, and perhaps keep the creatures away from us, we could find this person and leave, perhaps keeping further intruders out as well." She ignores the insults of the man....for the time being."

Cesran lets the others talk and he doesn't have anything to add. He keeps ready to cast a spell should this person prove to become violent. Sonja seems to have some success talking with him and he's not going to ruin it.

Kanyk remains quiet for the most part, be also remains cautious of the man and his staff. He does not wish to make matters more difficult, but he doesn't mean to be on the receiving end of a surprise attack either. He speaks out. "We do not mindlessly attack the creatures of this Marsh. Any fighting was done in defense, not to slaughter." He eyes the man. "We have a druid amongst us, as my friend said, and I myself am a follower of Gilead's teachings. We wouldn't commit the atrocities you blame upon us."

Eleria's teeth clack together loudly, to prevent her foot going any farther into her mouth. The druid blushes fiercely, and gives the...man? a tentative smile when she's introduced, offering a small bow. Hoo boy...

The strange fellow in the rags appears incredulous at this claim. "Is this true?" He lifts a gloved hand to peel back some of the rags shrouding his face, peering out at Eleria with dark, troubled eyes. "What dedicated Druidess would allow this defilement? How many of my marsh's innocent creatures have you slain in your recklessness? I have witnessed your little band slay even harmless sleeping toads. I will not allow this incursion to continue unchallenged. Whoever this man is you seek, he has not slain those under my protection, and is no concern of mine yet."

Eleria recoils a half-step when the man comes closer, eyes widening as she comes eye to eye with him. "Ah...w-w-we've disturbed as little of the marsh as we can manage, sir. It is not a place we are accustomed to, and not a place we plan to return." She swallows, steeling herself. "I can assure you, sir, that our group did nothing more to the creatures here than any other prey would have done to an attacking predator. But we'll take pains from now on to avoid harming any others. I'll make sure of that."

Sonja takes a glance back to Cesran when the man mentions the sleeping toad. However, Sonja looks back to the apparent druid. "The belief was that when the frog awakened, it would attack us again. The person responsible will be properly admonished when we find who we are looking for." However, as the druid walks past her, Sonja turns and steps in front of the 'druid' again, a definite protective stance. "Instead of arguing about it, you could be helping us, preventing other encounters like the one with the frogs, and doing as little 'defilement' of the hagsmarsh as possible. What say you?"

Tannin looks up. "The frogs may have thought us flies, and we... Are not accustomed to yielding to swords, good wood-swamp man. Which they did bring in the night. Being neither flies nor defilers, however, much has already been harmed, and yet this man remains. Be he living or dead, should we not see him safely home, I fear his family will only send a force far bigger and less gentle than we, and it may prove to the detriment of all. Perhaps in your knowing and care for this place, you might help resolve the difficulty, and to that end we may be of some service?"

Cesran narrows his eyes at the druid, but still he doesn't say anything. He keeps his posture ready to cast a spell on the druid if all this talking doesn't work out.

The druid (man?) returns his filthy rags to their more concealing state, his voice muffled again. "... Hmmmph. You are no predators, hunting for food. You have slain the innocent and those who posed you no harm. I will not aid you." He is silent for a moment, directing what might be a scowl at Cesran. "... I will give you one more day to remain in my swamp. If by sundown tomorrow you are not leaving the Hagsmarsh, or if you kill any other innocent creature under my protection, you will be destroyed. This is the only warning you will receive."

Eleria's face goes red. "No, we are /not/ predators! We were /prey/! Didn't you listen to...mmmnnnggh..." The diminuitive druid trembles as she forces down her anger, hands tightening. "We're sorry to have disturbed you," she says through clenched teeth, counting her breaths, "We will be gone before sundown tomorrow."

Tannin adds, straightening her spine and one brow. "Also. Good. Man. Of. This. Place. As you well-lament, and though we did not wish it. Some creatures did treat us prey, and of this, came away food for other creatures of your place. Mark you. If this should happen again, it will go the no better, and should we fall, you'll have wished you aided us." She pauses. Looks around. "The Mother loves all, but few others love this place. We seek a foolish man, on his foolish errand, and better that should end with us bringing him home. It's said ancient evils haunt this place, and if those are none of your concern, help us to leave them undisturbed."

Kanyk doesn't even bother with pleasantries. After the Druid gives them their timeline, he just starts walking. To his party he turns his head. "We've little time to lose then, unless we risk angering him. Let us go now and see if we can't find him." He pauses before moving out of earshot of the druid entirely, turning to speak loudly so that he may hear clearly. "See that the creatures under your care remain innocent, if you will, and I do not see any further issue. If we come under attack, then expect us to do what is necessary to achieve our goal." With that, he turns and treks forward.

Sonja stares at the 'druid' for a long moment before turning. "By the light of Daeus, even the dwarves aren't this close-minded." She then turns down the path. "We still need to find him, time limit or no. It's what we were sent to do." She then looks to the druid. "Know this, sir. If we are attacked by anything in this marsh, we WILL defend ourselves. These people here are my allies and I will protect them on my honor as a Sunblade.....no matter how reckless..." And she glances again to Cesran. "....their actions may be." She then turns and walks down the path, following Kanyk.

"Prey does not slay creatures for sport once they have been subdued and rendered helpless. This was not an act befitting a Druidess, and one who calls herself such should be wary of associating with those who would do such a thing." The druid takes a few steps back. "You will take the utmost care in avoiding further harm to the creatures of this marsh. Or you will face the penalty. You have been warned." Unless anyone stops him, he stomps off into the muck.

Cesran looks the druid up and down as he consider if the group could be the druid. He keeps his opinions to himself as he doesn't want to cause trouble for the group. He lets this others speak as his jaw is set. He knows if he does speak it will cause nothing, but a bigger argument and right now he would like to just fine this lost adventurer and get him or his remains out of here. He looks towards his companions to see if they are ready to leave.

Eleria turns bright red, and hides her face at that warning. "... You're right, of course," she says, though her anger turns from the druid to the wizard she's been travelling with. "Some of my companions have much to learn about mercy and the right way of living in the world with their fellow beings. I'll see to it that a lesson is learned." And she bows more deeply to the marsh druid as he stomps off. When she's gone, she lets out a huff, and turns about, giving Cesran a Death Glare before stomping off down the path. "Let's find the damn dwarf and get out of here."

Tannin folds her arms over her a moment, and says to Cesran. "What I said was true. If we do not succeed in our rescue, those relations will send worse. " And she says generally, "And if I sing a creature to sleep, do *not* kill it when it is not decidedly necessary."

Cesran ignores the looks that he gets as they are starting to travel again. He lets the others get a couple steps ahead of him as he follows behind them, no since in them being blamed for his actions.

Tannin pauses to think there. Hrmphs. Looks back the way they came. "Either that man of the swamp *lies* ot the one we seek slipped by him. For all his claims, that one we just met knows not all. If he *does* not truly know and see all, he chose this place over any other to meet us. And if the men of the wood I know don't mislead me, that means there may be several ways to this place, and our quarry may have taken one of them. We should look back a little."

Another two hours pass. Daylight is waning as the group finally approaches the red X marked on the map, the final destination of the adventurer they've been seeking. Those expecting to find a sprawling tomb or palace studded with jewels in the middle of the dank swamp are going to be left sorely disappointed. Still, there is an obvious destination here. There's the gaping maw of a cave mouth right where the X is marked on the map, right in the middle of a boggy hillside. With sunset approaching, it's much too dark to see too far into the cavern.

Cesran takes out a sunrod and he cracks it against one of the rocks. He tucks it in his belt as he waits for the others to make the decision to enter the cave or leave the swamp.

GAME: Cesran used a Sunrod.

Eleria's head tilts as they approach the cave, having calmed down a little. "Curious!" she says, coming up to the mouth and peering inside. "I'm not sure I would have expected a cave in the middle of a swamp." Glancing back at her party, the druid tilts her head up, and puts on her best Commanding voice. "Before we go any further, I must make one request to all of you. Should we come across any animals, I /insist/ that you keep your weapons sheathed as long as necessary. We may be able to make it in and out of this swamp alive without drawing any more unnecessary ire."

Kanyk eyes the cave quietly from a distance. "This is the spot marked." He inspects the area around the mouth of the cave, considering options. "Here we are then. No use in standing here waiting. If there is something in there that is dangerous, I suspect we will find out soon enough. I advise caution, though I am sure it is foremost in all of our minds." He takes a quiet step towards the mouth of the cave. He looks over towards Eleria. "I will harm nothing that has not already harmed us. You have my word on that." He turns back to the cave. "I am going to take a look inside, as its too hard to see anything from out here. Who will be joining me?"

Sonja looks to Eleria......and turns to show the Earthbreaker upon her shoulder. "No. I am here to protect you." She then smiles to Eleria. "I will, however, not attack unless I am attacked. How's that sound?" She says before starting her way into the cave.

When she gets a lot of half-promises from her group, the druid sighs. "Animals attack things only when they are hungry or scared. Remember this. What may seem to be trying to attack you could just be looking to get away, instead. So.../please/, still your weapons a moment longer than you normally would." She's almost pleading now.

She steps aside to let Kanyk past, looking to Cesran and raising an eyebrow, waiting for his promise.

The sunrod does a great deal to illuminate the cave. While the mouth is quite large, it narrows considerably after the entrance, with a single winding passage that twists deeper into the darkness. It's big enough for two to walk side by side, but no more than that. At least it's taller than it is wide, so the group won't have to worry about bumping their heads. A considerable amount of muck and mire has been tracked in from the swamp, leaving the rocky floor wet and slippery.

Cesran just looks at Eleria when she looks at him and he waits for her to head in before he will bring up the tail end of the group. He will follow the rest of the group without giving Eleria a promise.

Kanyk holds up an arm to signal the parthy that he has noticed something. He points to a stick near the mouth of the cave, buried partially in mud. "There. Someone used a torch here. I can't tell how recently." He pauses, turning his head slightly towards the cave. "And there is a sound within... if I had to describe it... it sounds like something chewing on something." He seems a bit concerned now. "I worry for our charge now. I think we should let whatever is in there come out of the cave before we proceed inside. I don't like the idea of walking into a narrow ambush."

Sonja says, "I don't think any of us do. We still need to find him though." She says softly as she moves further in, hopefully everyone follows too."

Tannin stoops, after looking over the area, peering over the torch as it's stuck where it is, "Normally, one lights one of these on the way *in,* but barring some other reason, one would think that if they were to stick it in the mud here, they were on the way *out,* barring some other cause, yes?"

"Or they could have dropped the torch when they were dragged into a creature's den," Eleria whispers, eyes wide. She nods to Kanyk. "Do you feel confident scouting ahead? If it's indeed a creature, I may be able to convince it to let us slip by."

Kanyk pauses and takes a deep breath. "It is an option worth trying." He lowers his stance, distributing his weight as low to the ground as he can get it. "I shall try and quietly poke my way in without disturbing whatever is inside. If he is preying upon our charge, I will return and describe the beast to you, if I cannot already tell what it is." He looks quietly to Sonja. "Be prepared. I will not wait in there for more than a few seconds if it discovers me. I -will- attempt to bring it out here into the open. I do hope that we do not need to do battle with whatever it is." With that, he quietly moves further into the cave, attempting to sneak in close enough to see whatever it is that lies within.

Tannin holds up the torch. "Yet, good Sister of the Green, this torch is well-spent. Unless our charge came by night in the precise way we did not, which is to say... Why extinguish such a thing just before entering a dark cave after so long burning? Perhaps to light another, yes, but... Perhaps he did come and leave..." Then Kanyk heads off and she sighs. Drops the thing. "Bright Lady as you loved me for or in spite of brashness, bless us now."

After a few minutes, the Monk returns, somewhat hurried. "I believe it is as I feared. Something resides within, chewing on what appeared to be a human limb." He pauses, keeping his voice low. "The creature is of the likes I have never seen before. A dozen feet tall. Green skin. Bald. Beady black eyes... its mouth resembles that of a fish, only its full of teeth. There are also runes and symbols within. I think it is some sort of ritual chamber..."

Eleria winces when Kanyk comes back with his news, rubbing at her face. "Oh dear oh dear oh dear... A Marsh giant. This is not good." She glances around with a frown. Simply passing through its room would be near suicide. Well..." She glances around at the group. "For a solo adventurer, that is. They're /very/ territorial, you see." The druid frowns at Kanyk, "Is there any other way past it, that you saw?"

Tannin hrms, to Kanyk, as he comes out and gives report. "I suppose it does make passing sense thata treasure huner would not pass by the jewels on the outside of this building, to dare the inside, unless unwillingly. Unless," she pauses, "Blessed Lady hold him to Her breast, " there are any other fresh dead men for the creature to be feasting on, remember our charge is not one of passing by, but of rescue or the return of remains. Or else we shouldn't be here."

Cesran would nod in agreement with Eleria, "That is what it sounds like at least from Kanyk's description." He says in a low tone of voice. "They are ravenous, man-eating, evil, barely civilized savages who like to prowl the swamps. They tend to be very aggressive and territorial. They are also very strong. We would have a very tough time defeating one." Helooks towards Kanyk, "Can you please describe the runes and symbols that you saw. Draw them on the floor if you can please."

Kanyk shakes his head. "There is nothing but a large chamber inside, where the beast sits, eating... whoever it is eating. The chamber is large, and we can all fit inside easily. If he is eating who we suspect he is eating, then we will have to contend with him." He pauses, putting both his hands together as he thinks. "It seems we have little choice on the matter, but I will defer to your better judgement." He then looks to Cesran and nods quietly, doing his best to draw the runes and symbols on the ground, all the way keeping a wary glance cast towards the cave, in case the giant should come out.

Eleria bites her bottom lip, and sighs, shaking her head. Then perks up, looking to Tannin. "Sister, would you be able to put this creature to sleep from the shadows? Barring that, the best I can think of is burying it in a minor cave-in. Hopefully enough to trap it, but not enough to collapse the whole cave." When Kanyk starts drawing, she falls silent, peering curiously at his "artwork".

Cesran sighs softly, "Thank you Kanyk, I'm afraid that the symbols you are drawing I can't make out, they are obviously damaged and incomplete from the long years of disuse." He looks to the others, "Well are we going to attack him or not?"

Sonja chews her lip in thought as she takes all of this in. "Is there a way to make him....not attack us?"

Tannin hrms, and shakes her head, "I don't think my youthful spellsingings from the Old Round will put such a large mass of a creature to sleep, though truth be told, anyone might have an off-night," she pauses, to wink at the Druid. "But these creatures are known to criticize much, and appreciate little. " She pauses a moment, "More to the point, I know not." She quirks a brow. "Yet. "If the Grey Lady of repose will forgive the presumption, there may be something I can accomplish, if we might be very quiet about it."

Cesran looks to the others, 'I'll cast invisibly and fly upon myself and I'll go in and get the remains if there are any left. The rest of you please leave the cave." He says as he gets ready to cast the spells.

Eleria's eyebrows go up at Cesran's plan, a little surprised. She glances to the wizard, then back to the people around them. "Best plan I've heard so far." She rises, preparing to back out of the cave.

Sonja looks to Cesran Dubiously and smiles. "No attacking, Cesran. We want you out in one piece." She then starts out of the cave....

Kanyk folds his arms. "Bold plan, but whatever works. I am for the idea that, if combat is to happen, we try to outrun the beast. At least then someone can likely grab a piece of the body, and then we can start running until we are clear of the swamp. Whatever we do, this will be incredibly difficult."

GAME: Cesran casts Fly.

Tannin shakes her head, after murmuring a small prayer and pressing a palm to Cesran. "Go quietly, if it must be you. In this circumstance, also, we don't need much. Whether it works or not, fly to us here, win or lose...." And she says for all, "If we're to fight a giant, in this little corridor's mouth is where we first should meet. If this cannot be, running in swamp will help us not."

Cesran looks over towards Tannin as he feels the spell placed upon him, "It's my fault that the druid is angry with us so this should help to balance the scales some." He waits until the others are out before he casts fly upon himself and than he casts invisibility on himself. He starts to slowly fly in as he is counting down how much time he has in his head. He starts to fly towards where this marsh giant is.

Invisible wizards are tough to spot. But a hungry, hungry marsh giant is going to notice when part of his meal suddenly disappears just a couple feet away from him. The hunched green creature turns and suddenly lets out a guttural, angry yell. This won't be good.
