  • Emitter: Bahken
  • Characters: Arkun (Wtc5) Blackjack (Rgr4) Lyrana (Clr5) Celeste (Bbn2)
  • Place: Alexandria - Docks
  • Time: April 23, 2015
  • Summary: The Merchant Guf, pleased with having his Fin back and the news about his mother (ok maybe not 'pleased' about that, but appreciates the closure) has hired the adventure's guild to run protection on a deal with an undisclosed second party who he seems not to trust.
  • APL: 5
  • Encounter 1: 1 Blood Bureaucrat (lvl 3 Necromancer), 2 Human Rogues (lvl 4), 2 zombies, 3 fast-moving zombies CR 7

The Merchant Guf, pleased with having his Fin back and the news about his mother (ok maybe not 'pleased' about that, but appreciates the closure) has hired the adventure's guild to run protection on a deal with an undisclosed second party who he seems not to trust.

The instructions are relatively simple, meet his contact Geoff down by the docks about two hours before dawn. If everything goes smoothly, the transaction will either happen or it won't, and all parties will part amicably. However, if Geoff is doublecrossed, hazard pay will be awarded for the combat.

The area is dark except for a lone lantern at the end of the pier shining light on the dark waters. Geoff is there, a pleasant enough fellow though he looks like he's much more familiar with accounting ledgers than any kind of weapon.

Lyrana is hard to move quietly though she is trying. The are expecting trouble so she does at least have her shield out, she can pull her weapon easily at anytime as she moves along with the others.

GAME: Arkun refreshes spells.

Celeste likewise walks with her shield strapped to her forearm. She scans the darkness, checking up every street and alleyway the group walks past; her oruch heritage serves her well, eyes piercing the darkness without any great issue. She offers no particular comment on anything, but merely walks in silence, waiting for either commerce or combat to take place.

"Haaazard," Blackjack leans toward Arkun, 'singing' the word, "HaaaZAAAARD!" She leans away, clasping her hands and fluttering her eyelashes before dreamily cooing.

"..hazard paaay."

That's all she needed to hear to get her involved in this whole ordeal. Doublecrossing, after all, is a pirate's favourite thing.

When they begin to near the point of meeting, she puts on her best dealing-with-others smile, which happens to appear as a demented thing with too-wide eyes and awkwardly bared teeth. She leaves the talking to others.

"... yer a weedy wee thing, ain'tye?"

Or not.

Arkun isn't actually that sneaky, for a man who dresses in robes and walks around either barefoot or in sandals. His sandal-covered feet slap on the ground as he walks towards the light - figuring it the better place to be rather than anywhere else in this Gods-forsaken darkness. "Yes. /Hazard/ pay. Because probably something will end up trying to kill us. That's why they pay us extra."

He sighs, "We're here to make sure you don't get stabbed to death." He states to Geoff, "So lets get this deal done and we'll be off home sooner, rather than later."

It's almost disquieting as the ship pulls in. It shines no lantern, no light at all. Seeming to use the Lantern at the end of the docks as it's one guiding light. The water flowing against the hull is the only noise until ropes are cast down and two men jump quietly down to the dock to tie it off. A large plank is lowered from the bow and the two men are joined by a third as they start moving large crates down onto the dock. Geoff even rises and moves to help them, seeming to be in a hurry to get this done. The adventurer's get wary looks but within a few minutes all the crates are on the dock, and Geoff has moved back towards the company.

The third man steps closer dressed in dark silky merchant's garb. "Brought a lot of protection, didn't you? I only have my two men here.." Geoff waves his hand dismissively, "Yes, but Guf has a reputation. It wouldn't help it to welch on deals.. that said some of the parties he deals with don't care so much about that.. and thus my master becomes a bit of a target. Usually, all it takes is a little show of force to keep people acting honorable.." he smiles back at the party appreciatively seeming to think that's all it will take. He then steps towards the crates and moves to open one to check it's contents. But the merchant places his hand firmly on the lid, "Payment first please..."

Lyrana nods and just watches the group. She doesn't like this sort of thing, but she is hired for protection and she needed the work. She is quite wary though.

"I like yer ship." There's a vague, yet natural note of aggression to Blackjack's voice as she eyes the vessel. "Oh, aye. I like 'em girthy." She talks mostly to herself, ignoring the goings on of the business of trade.

Or so it appears.

When payment is demanded before the merchandise is viewed, the pirate quirks a brow and turns to regard the men with a suspicious squint. "... I know tha' rule. ... I've said it. .. I wrote it." Sure, she did. "Hand off th'lid, lad. I'm two-sheets already, an' I'm ready tae go."

"I happen to know a thing or two about business," the half-oruc states as she leans closer, "Despite what my appearance might suggest. it is traditional to let the merchandise be viewed *before* payment is handed over. Unless, of course... there is something wrong with the shipment." She perks an eyebrow, and glowers at the man with his hand on the lid. "Come, now. It is the time for honesty."

<OOC> Bahken says, "Anyway, after this round of poses, perception and sense motive checks please"

"What my erstwhile companion said. Lets get this done." Arkun pipes up, idly tugging at the sleeves of his robes to loosen them up somewhat. "Nobody wants to have any bloodshed tonight. I just had these robes washed.."

Geoff seems less concerned. After all, with the adventurer's he out numbers the merchant and his goons. "Yes, but it's also customary to -see- the money.. He moves over to one of the pier posts where a rope has been fastened and he pulls up a soaking bag that looks rather heavy. moving close enough to catch some of the lantern light, he opens the bag and shows enough so that the merchant can see the gleam. The man steps back from the lid then. Smiling as Geoff, still holding the bag, once more moves to open the lid. There's a creak and a pop. All of you just KNOW this is about to go sideways, you can sense it in the demeanor of the three. None of you are surprised with the merchant shouts NOW and a hand reaches up to grab the throat of the accountant from the crate, the other crate lids begin to open on their own.

"Crossbows?! REALLY!?"

Arkun heaves a sigh as his hands raise. The chant that pours from his lips is one filled with vitrol and distaste as lightning begins to crackle from inbetween his digits. He heaves his hands up and then brings them down, as a bolt of lightning soars from his fingertips, impacting into one of the crossbowmen and leaving a charred burnt wound where the bolt hits.

"I didn't want to have to do this!"

Two of crates lids clatter to the docs as two figures clamber out into the dim light just outside the lantern's main glow. Even in that low light the rot on their flesh is visible as is their staggered movements as they begin lumbering down the dock.

Meanwhile two shots are fired at the slower to react, though the burnt man gives Arkun and evil eye. Both shots go wide though and the men then drop the crossbows and begin sliding up gloves as they move forward.. the gleam of lanternlight on the blades is visible.

"HAZAAARD," Blackjack 'sings' out, the greatsword oft strapped to her back free of its bindings, and loosed in a hard-swung downward arc, chopping into the zombie as she gives a grunt of effort. "PAAAAAY!" She's having herself a good time, as usual. It's still standing, her blade lodged halfway through its shoulder before she yanks it free. "... Hm. That shoulda wor--" SNAP! Chub Chub's beartrap jaw clamps down on the thing's calf, yanking it to the ground, chewing twice before releasing it. His mouth hangs agape, snaggleteeth glistening with the ichor of the downed zombie, a grumbling noise breathed out. His tail whips back and forth like a dog with a toy, but the squinting of its revealed eye and noises it makes suggests it is not so pleased. "Aw, Chub Chub, s'it gross, aye? With combat well and truely begun, Arkun brings his palms together and bows his head. His palms then spread as he begins making the somantic motions and gestures, chanting in a low voice as he begins the summoning spell's incantation.

While everyone else is busy moving into combat, Celeste is standing there, watching what's going on. Some people play music; some people understand a different beat. This is Celeste's beat. As lightning bolts and spells are going off, and a pirate and her crocodile are busy laying into things, Celeste brandishes her trident, and flexes her muscles. A zombie makes the mistake of coming towards her; the half-oruch's bones pop against each other as she stretches, and a howl of rage snarls from her lips. She lunges forwards at the last moment, ramming her trident through the undead's stomach; and then before it can react to her, her jaws clamp down hard around its throat. She snarls and shakes at it, then tears off so great a chunk of flesh and bone that the zombie's head falls straight off, and rolls off the dock and into the water with a loud sploosh.

"WHO'S NEXT??" snarls the Half-Oruch.

<OOC> Celeste says, "You guys should lemme pose. :P And, thank you all for the help."

<OOC> Blackjack says, "In combat it's generally expected that people will pose at their own pace... given that they have actions declared OOCly, and respond accordingly."

"Chub Chub! Gae see Lassie!" She commands. With that, the albino croc backs away with a wiggle-bottomed waddle, and rolls off the dock into the water, where he begins making his way toward Arkun.

He notices Arkun chanting though, and opening his robes a ghostly hand appears as if it had been hiding there. He poinst at Arkun, muttering something and suddenly the hand glows blue as the incorporeal hand reaches out to touch him. It passes just over his head. Close enough to feel the unnatural chill.

The remaining zombie steps close to Blackjack and in a rapid motion slams her twice with its fists, doing a fair amount of damage.

Assaulted and battered, the pirate's breath becomes a ragged laboured thing as the pain begins to take hold. Still, she fights -- perhaps surprisingly stalwart in comparison to what others have thought of her in the past. Blackjack brings her blade to the fore once more. Heaving it in a dragged, upward arc, it digs into the goon from the abdomen up, cutting him down. The momentum from that swing is a terrible thing to behold, brought in continuation to cleave the zombie at her side to the ground in one fluid motion.

Her teeth grit, and her gaze is turned to the merchant. "Ye'd better take me, lad, cause I'm comin' fer ye!"

Still. Hazard pay.

She brings it down on him, gashing open a long line of angry wound down his side and back. "Yer fannibaws nearly lost me my Chub Chub, ye heartless dick! Ye'll no' be rid'a MEE!"

Stepping back a single step, Arkun points towards the running Rogue as the Leopard suddenly comes charging past him, yowling in anger and rage. With a purple sheen from his right eye, the Rogue staggers before the Leopard latches on, biting and mauling at him in a most angry manner.

<OOC> Arkun lost map access. Someone move him please.

The rogue.. last one alive, seems to be sizing up Celeste, and instead of panicing looks like he intends to run on purpose. Since it's barbarian ahead and one, two, three, OHWHATTHEHELLSISTHA-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGHHH. And there he is struggling under the mauling cat. "I GIVE UP!!!!" he screams hopefully before he gets torn to pieces.

Celeste is winding up, about to bring her trident down to skewer the rogue; when abruptly, he gives up. She growls and snarls at him for good measure, brandishing her weapon like she seriously means it, as she comes down off her bloodfury. Her shoulders slump a little, and she pants heavily, keeping her polearm trained on the last man left alive. "Son," she declares. "You'd better talk."

Lyrana cocks her head to the side, "They should not have used undead." she comments and then looks towards each in turn, "Is anyone hurt?"

"Lairds above..." Blackjack meanders toward the oruch, leopard, bandit... man, it's a party over here.

Chub Chub comes splashing from the waters, waddle-scooting his way toward the pirate's location, mouth hanging wide and tongue lolling out the side. "Aye, Chub Chub, Mami's glad t'see ye, tae. 'Mon, then." She finds a place nearby the mauled rogue to slump down, sitting with a grunt. "... blood all o'er m'coat..." she mutters.

With a snap of his fingers, the Leopard suddenly fades from existance, snarling all the while. Arkun then begins to pace over towards the still remaining rogue, his head turning to look towards Blackjack. "S'a good look on you, y'know?" He quips, before giving a glare down at the squirming man. "I swear, all this effort for what? You end up nearly dying. Well. You still might die. I don't know."

<OOC> Blackjack says, "Don't forget to +nom your friends."

<OOC> Blackjack says, "(By typing +nom <person>, or +nom/multi <name> <name> <etc>)"

Geoff looks around at the carnage checks to make sure the pouch is still there. It is.. and he frowns at the crates which apparently do NOT contain the cargo he was expecting. He heads aboard the ship briefly and returns with a sigh. He cheers up though as he sees the adventurers, "Well, I just wanted to say, -thank you-. You all are worth every penny, I don't know what would have happened if we hadn't brought you, honestly.

The bandit looks up the trident fearfully at the Oruch, "About what?!" he asks, though he does seem far less horrified now that the fur, claws, and teeth are off of him. He doesn't look thrilled to see Blackjack though, consider it was HIS bladed gauntlet that tried to pierce between her fourth and fifth rib. The man says, "I-I was just following orders. It was Morty's idea.. Figured Guf had enough to lose and he figured if we came with enough corpses we'd outnumber the hired help since Guf always tends to hire enough so that his side is the more popular one.. I was just trying to get away!" After things took a turn for the worse and AFTER he had stabbed Blackjack

<OOC> Bahken says, "Half-oruch anyway"

<OOC> Celeste Imagines it's a common mistake.

Lyrana nods her head, "It might had worked if they hadn't been undead, Daeus has granted me much strength when it comes to fighting undead." she smiles and then stretches, "I am glad we were here to eliminate the undead." that does seem to be most of her concern.

Celeste snorts. "'Bout what? About anything you want to talk about, sweetheart. ...But talking about your plan will do just fine." She gestures with her trident towards the ship, then back down to the man. "My comrade speaks the truth. You might well still die. I'm a Gladiatrix from Charn; I'm not terribly used to leaving people alive. Anything you've got to say that might just help me find a reason to leave you alive?"

<OOC> Celeste is going to roll intimidation, if that's alright?

"Yer a bitch an' I hate ye." Blackjack mentions, calmly, brows raised. Her attentions are then gathered by Lyrana, "... Could... could ye say undead a few more times?" And then she glances to Celeste, then to the bandit, then up to Arkun with a slow smirk.

"Anythin's a good look on me, lad. Once we get back, mayhaps I show ye what I mean, whilst ye tend t'my battle scratches."

The rogue looks up at Lyrana, "We weren't expecting a Cleric.." he admits, "This sort of things a little clandestined for them types usually." He looks up at Celeste and waves his hands frantically from the ground, "WHAT THE IN THE GODS NAMES DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY?! I'LL SAY IT I SWEAR!"

Geoff walks up then, clearing his voice, "I think that's enough.." he says softly, but politely. We'll let the authorities take it from here. Smuggling in undead is rather frowned upon if I recall. The night's more or less of a bust, if we're lucky, master Guf might be able to get the ship through a breach of contract suit, if the magistrate is amenable.."
