PrP:Walk in the Woods

From Tenebrae
Jump to navigation Jump to search

You have all been called to Rune and then given direction out into the woods, the barest direction that basically amount to follow this path. You all start out in the morning following the road out of Rune. It's a winding path that takes you across the plains and into the small hills outside of the city, from there you take a left at the fork in the road and follow the winding path into the forest. The trees start to grow tall and it gets a bit darker as the branches reaching overhead block out a little of the light on this overcast day. Suddenly before you all there is a skunk that's sleeping in the middle of the road. It's right in the middle and the trees and brush are thick around the road. It’d be difficult to go around, but possible. As the party comes within 30 feet of the skunk it wakes up and just stands there watching you.

From afar, Dain will try wild empathy

You paged Dain with 'Go for it.'

<OOC> Cesran says, "Please this is free rp so far, so feel free to pose."

<OOC> Silmeria nodnod.

GAME: Dain rolls charisma+2: (10)+-1+2: 11

You paged Dain with 'Go ahead and pose and then I will pose a reaction after the others pose'

Kroth pauses as they all spot the large skunk. It’s not something he really wants to deal with, its not really a danger, beyond the extreme smell. He looks around at the others with him, "Anyone have idea?" he asks quietly.

Dain rides up on his big horse and struggles down, "Be at peace little one." the dwarf says. He smiles, waving his tiger back as he tries to charm the little skunk into getting off the road.

"Honestly what sort of directions are these," Silmeria sighs, as the trees loom closer and closer all around. "It's almost like we're being lured into an ambush, isn't it?" Tugging her cloak over her shoulders, she glances to either side of the road, and halts dead in her tracks as the skunk is spotted. "...Um. Yes, hello," she says, slipping her hood further down and taking a quick step back, more than content to let Dain handle negotiations at this point.

"I have limited experience with the wildlife of this geographical area," Morasha says, examining the skunk with as much interet as if it were a tarrasque. "Family Mephitidae, is it not? I wonder, is that M. mephitis, or perhaps C. leuconotus, or ..." Her speculations are probably far more interesting to her than they are to anyone else in hearing range. The problem of actually getting by it has so far failed to capture her interest.

The skunk watches each one of the adventurers and as Dain gets down the skunk moves a bit closer to him. So far it's tail is down, but every so often it twitches upwards a little bit. It's still in the middle of the road, but Dain has its attention.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Dain give me one more wild empathy check."

GAME: Dain rolls charisma+2: (2)+-1+2: 3

<OOC> Cesran says, "Okay Dain give me a pose please and we'll continue"

Dain steps closer, "We're NICE people.. we just need you to move along.. no one will hurt you." The dwarf says stepping closer to the skunk, getting his big blunt nose all too close to the woodland creature.

"I really, really hope he can understand you," Silmeria says, watching Dain try his thing with wide eyes. "I honestly don't want to have to shoot it just for not getting out of our path, that would be horribly rude."

Kroth shrugs, "We could circle around it." He gestures past it. "We go into the woods a bit, and circle around back to the path. I mean, its just a skunk."

Morasha doesn't appear overly concerned by either prospect. "As far as I know, I don't need a specimen of that particular species," she says, "and in any case, if memory serves they smell even /worse/ when they're dead. If it won't move out of the way, then I don't see why we /couldn't/ just go around."

As Dain gets closer and closer to the skunk its tail rises higher and higher and it stamps its front feet a little bit. Before Dain's nose the skunk shimmers and grows into a towering giantborn dressed in hide and feathers. The hide has been torn in a couple places and is bloodied. The giantborn looks as if he has bandaged wounds on his arms and legs. One bandage is would around his head covering one of his eyes. "Thank you for not attacking, but..." The gaintborn coughs into his hand for a good minute before he stops. "Next time don't get so close to a real skunk." He rubs his chest. "Thank you for coming I am in need of your assistance."

Kroth frowns as the giantborn appears, arching a brow. "See, never shoot a random animal, it could be a druid. Lesson for everyone. Guild Rule #63 or something like that."

"....Ah," the bespectacled Vardaman says, as the skunk changes shape into the ragged, bloodied giantborn. "...That... makes things a good deal easier." Stepping up to a point just behind Dain, the blond turns a cheerful smile toward the druid. "And how can we help, sir...?"

If anything Morasha looks a little disappointed by this transformation. Skunk of indeterminate and -- however unlikely it might be -- possibly uncatalogued species? Interesting. Giantborn druid? Meh. Still, he /is/ asking for assistance, and she nods quickly in second to Silmeria's question.

Dain blinks, "Duly noted..." he says stepping back and giving a formal bow. "how may we help?" he asks. He pulls out his pipe, lights it with his thumb and puffs calmly.

"I am Druid Beltharogon, and my small woods have been invaded by outsiders looking to corrupt it. I had tried to fight them off by myself, but they were too strong, so now I call upon you to rid my forests of them." He looks back down the path, "They have set up an ambush along this path, but I can show you a path that will take you to them. There are 6 of them divided into two groups." He reaches down onto his belt and take off 4 small pouches, "I wish I could be of more help, but I am taxed trying to stop them from corrupting my forest." He offers you each a small pouch.

<OOC> Cesran says, "everyone roll 2d4"

GAME: Dain rolls 2d4: (7): 7

GAME: Kroth rolls 2d4: (7): 7

GAME: Silmeria rolls 2d4: (6): 6

GAME: Morasha rolls 2d4: (6): 6

<OOC> Cesran says, "Inside of the pouch you will find that many small bluish purplish berries."

Kroth looks down into the pouch, nodding and putting it in his pack. "Alright, what sort of people are corrupting your forest? Random dran warriors, or are we talking necromancers or something like demons."

Dain pages: Knowledge check to varify what they are?

You paged Dain with 'You'd know as a druid these are good berries.'

You paged Dain with 'You can't feel that they are, but you can safely assume they are.'

From afar, Dain nods, "Kay"

Silmeria peeks inside her pouch, tilting her head for a moment in puzzlement. "We do appreciate your aid, and of course we'd be happy to help," she says, bobbing her head. "And yes, anything you could tell us about your attackers would be greatly helpful."

Dain bows to the Druid Beltharogon, "Thank you Essence, we shall put these goodberries to good use," he says. he looks to Kroth and Silmeria, and nods going along with their questions.

Beltharogon has a pained look, "A corrupt druid and his apprentice, along with rangers, a barbarian and some sort of spellcaster." He moves over towards the edge of the path and with his broad arm he is able to gently push back some of the bushes to reveal another path, "This path will lead to where the apprentice and the two assigned to him lay in ambush."

"Never a botanist to hand when you need one," Morasha says, after giving the berries a cursory examination. But they might come in handy later, so she'll hide them away somewhere in her voluminous scarlet robes.

Kroth grunts, "That sounds like a formidable group, could have been like us, but hired by dran. Alright, we can try to sneak up and spoil thier ambush."

"I am sorry to hear that," Silmeria says as the pained expression crawls across the druid's face; and indeed, the idea of one's ideals corrupted and turned to serve evil ends, a particular pain an Inquisitor would be more than familiar with. One hand rests on the butt of her pistol, as she nods once. "Let's go, then; no sense dallying about."

<OOC> Cesran says, "Okay you get 2 prep spells to use if you want them before we FF ahead, ie mage armor/barkskin, what have you."

<OOC> Kroth says, "I will use a potion of Mage armor, duration 1 hour"

<OOC> Cesran says, "That is fine"

GAME: Kroth used a Potion of Mage Armor.

<OOC> Silmeria says, "Also Magic Weapon."

<OOC> Cesran says, "Okay, those are both minute per level?"

<OOC> Silmeria says, "Yah."

Kroth takes a moment when they get ready to go to quaff a potion, a shimmer around him shows the effects for an instant then it fades away. He nods to the others, apparently ready when they are.

GAME: Silmeria casts Magic Weapon. Caster Level: 4 DC: 13

GAME: Silmeria casts Weapon of Awe. Caster Level: 4 DC: 14

While she doesn't cast any spells -- at the moment at least -- Morasha /does/ take a moment to unsling her bow and make an arrow ready. Her index finger keeps the arrow on its rest, leaving her right hand free for the time being. "I'm sure you'll excuse me if I decline to engage in hand-to-hand combat," she says.

The path takes you through the forest on a much more direct route then the road was taking. Barely bigger than a game trail it leads you to the edge of a small clearing set back from the road. The clearing is about 30' wide and sitting at the far edge closest to the road is a gaintborn in metal breastplate with an earth breaker across his lap sitting in front of a fire. Next to him is an elf in hide armor sitting with a wolf next to him. The wolf's head is in the elf's lap they are talking or rather the elf is complaining. "I don't see why I have to be out here with you two." The giantborn gives the elf an annoyed look, "The Master said you needed some experience best way to gain experience is to ambush travelers." The elf snorts, "Humphrey hasn't seen any travelers all day he's probably sleeping up there." The elf looks up to one of the trees and a voice can be heard, "Silence your tongue or I'll put an arrow through it, this is the only road through the forest, I'll see travelers well before they see us."

As the party slips down the path, Silmeria draws her pistol, checking its action, assuring herself of its readiness, and begins to mutter a few soft, fervent prayers over the weapon's blued-steel barrel. The gun begins to glint with an obviously magical light, intricate silver etchings tracing themselves into view over the weapon, until it truly looks like an instrument of divine wrath.

Kroth pauses, pointing at the Mor and the bow, then up at the tree. He looks up, trying to spot whomever is hiding in the tree. He points to himself, then at the elf and the giantborn, and mimes a punch.

Dain takes out his hammer and his shield. He keeps back though, looking to his party members as dwarves tend to be slow and not so sneaky... His cat is better about that. Thrud moving along easily through the underbrush. That is one advantage, he seems to pass easily through the underbrush.

<OOC> Kroth says, "Whats the range to the giantborn?"

What marks an Inquisitor as different from Cleric or Paladin is, in large part, that honor and ethics are two very different things. Which is why, despite her gentle demeanor and clearly faithful attitude, rather than announce herself, her intentions, or offer surrender, Silmeria listens quietly to the elf's griping, tilts her head once... then levels her pistol and fires, the bullet slamming hard into (and likely through) the apprentice's back. And thus does the battle begin.

Dain pages: Oh what about my cat?

Dain drops his hammer, drops to the ground, whispering something. Then suddenly roots rise from the ground and grab those in the clearing, binding them all.

You paged Dain with 'Do you want your cat to run into the entanglement?'

You paged Dain with 'He couldn't get to the one in the tree as the tree the ranger is in is in the entanglement.'

You paged Dain with 'But if you want to do something else with your tiger.'

Probably because she's too busy trying to identify the exact species of the wolf, Morasha's a little slower off the mark than her compatriots. By the time she remembers that they're actually in a fight, shots have been fired, spells have gone off ... but everyone's still up and moving. Which means it's time for a little elf on elf violence. She draws the string of her bow back to her cheek, takes aim, and looses an arrow into the poor wounded elf. Things aren't going well for him, not at all.

You paged Dain with 'Did you have something else for your tiger or can I move on?’

Dain pages: I'll have him ready a charge an action to attack whoever escapes the entanglement.

You paged Dain with 'Okay'

Drawing a wicked looking, hook-bladed sword, Silmeria levels the blade at the elf, a faint gray fire limning her form. "Make your peace, murderous filth! My Lady Vardama's gates stand open to receive you!" Crouching low, she lopes into the clearing, blade rising to finish off the apprentice.. only to trip over a writhing root, now stuck fast along with her opponents. "...Well, nuts..."

The Ranger in the tree sees that his companions are entangled and he starts to aim at the druid that cast the spell, until he sees Silmeria charge into the entangled area. He immediately swings his bow around and takes a shot at her, but all he gets is grass as the shot whizzes in front of her face. IF the grass had not held her fast where it did the arrow might as well have been lodged in her brainpan.

The druid elf struggles to get free, but he is held firm as he struggles. His wolf fairs better being able to wriggle free and move quickly outside of the grasping reach of the weeds. "Attack them Beast!" The elf druid cries out.

The gaintborn roars as he easily bursts free of the grass and he wades out of the entanglement near Silmeria. He grins a broken tooth grin, "Come and get some." He smashes the earth breaker against the ground and holds it ready to attack.

Kroth chuckles as things quickly get out of hand, "So much for a good surprise." He rushes after the giantborn, throwing a heavy punch towards his midsection in the hopes of knocking the wind out of him. It doesn’t do that, but it does hurt him some.

Everything seems to be more or less in hand. Well ... maybe it is and maybe it isn't, but Morasha's judgment in these things isn't all that great. Limited real-world experience. She retrieves an arrow from the quiver on her back, nocks it, and takes aim at her previous target, who by now is probably looking kind of peeved at being the subject of all this missile fire. Lucky him, her shot goes wide this time, knocked off-course by a treacherous branch.

The giantborn's casual rending of the thorns and grinning invitation is met with a small, distracted smile... but after a token struggle, Silmeria's gaze turns back to the druid, and his feral companion. "Close your eyes," she says to the elf, as a bullet simply disappears from her bandolier, "soon it won't hurt anymore." This statement, punctuated with another sharp report, the bullet striking the druid apprentice full in the chest. "My Lady will see you, now."

The ranger in the trees takes out two arrows this time and he takes aim on the still entangled human, "Have some of this you self-righteous zealot." The ranger says as he fires both arrows. One misses wide, but the other one buries itself in a soft spot in Silmeria's armor. The ranger knew where it would hurt the worse.

Kroth grimaces as for some reason he simply sticks his head right into the path of the earthbreaker and his skull is nearly crushed. He staggers back, somehow able to shove a handful of the berries into his mouth before simply falling over backwards.

It is now Silmeria's turn! Ranger is next!

<OOC> Cesran says, "Sil you are up!"

Okay, a moment ago things looked under control, now rather much less so. Despite her relative inexperience, Morasha doesn't miss a beat, lowering her bow and reaching for the coil of spidersilk rope at her hip. She flings it in the general direction of the barbarian and is already intoning eldritch words while it's still in the air. Which is a problem, because thanks to intervening leaves and branches and things, the rope doesn't actually end up anywhere near its target.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Silmeria you are up"

Worse and worse! Morasha's efforts haven't helped much so far. But if at first you don't succeed, try using necromancy. She intones ominous words of power in a dread ancient tongue and points a single finger at the barbarian, shadowy menace seeming to gather around her. Amazingly, it works. The hulking barbarian is frightened of the slight little Llyranesi girl, and makes run for it, narrowly avoiding swipes from Dain and the tiger.

With the barbarian temporarily out of her line of sight, Morasha turns her attention to that damnably persistent ranger. An arrow comes out of her quiver, and she sets it to the ancient ivory bow, half-exhales, and sends the shaft toward him. Not quite good enough; it brushes past him harmlessly.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Pose it Dain."

<OOC> Dain says, "Only hurt him right?"

<OOC> Cesran says, "Yah only hurt him"

Dain draws out a sling, tosses in a pebble and whirls it, sending the stone into the archer's head, drawing blood. He and Thrud may be the last one's standing, but they won't go down easy.

After Dain's sling shot hits the ranger and the ranger is just about to retaliate when a bank of fog rolls in obscuring everything within five feet of you. A curse is heard up in the trees as there is the sound of a painful grunt from inside of the fog. Dain will hear Beltharogon's voice, "Follow me if you wish to help your friends." The rest of the party is carried back towards the cave where Beltharogen lives. He will get you all back to consciousness and lead you out of the woods back the road to Rune. He'll just ask that you ask the adventurer's guild to send more next time.
