  • Place: Alexandros, in a little village called Glade Spring
  • Time: Nov 9, 2014
  • Summary: A special event goes Bad . Very Bad.
  • APL: 8
  • Encounter 1: 15 x ghouls (CR1), 1 x Nabasu (Cr7); CR 10

There's a small celebration being held in a little settlement not far from the city, probably around a days journey on foot. The people have gathered in the village square and are enjoying the revelries of the day. Barrels of ale have been line up for the occasion and people are drinking as much as they want to. Kids are running around in the field, playing games, and there is a small band playing music. Some adults can be seen dancing and socializing with each other, and there appears to be a magic show at one corner. But not a lot seem to be gathered there. It would look like that people are not even sure why there is one on their celebration. Nevertheless, it gathers a few audience.

Azog celebrated this day in his tribe also, so is here for the celebration. His horse is tied up to the hitching post outside the town's excuse for a common house, and he is partaking of the food since this is how the day is celebrated here, apparently.

Elessa is passing through the town while travelling to and from a couple of jobs. Seeing the festival going on, she laughs and even joins in on the dancing, recalling her days travelling with her family on the Vast.

Far from the city is a state that Uneth has gradually lessened, day by day. Just another traveller when she moves on the open road or, more often, all but unnoticed when she avoids the clear path. The sounds of celebration draw her notice and curiosity as she nears the hamlet and she approaches to investigate. The time of The Hunt is still fresh, so she assumes that this is the cause for laughter and joy. If so, which victory to they celebrate?

Korrani was on her way to a hunting trip excursion. She needed some time with nature and the wild. Alone. The settlement was her last stop for a rest for the evening before she continued her journey. Barrels of ale and celebrations at hand, she decides to mingle and celebrate with the locals and imbibe some of the local brews.

The stage where the magic show is has its curtains drawn open and a man steps forth with a smile on his face. He bows to everyone present and says, "Thank you fair folks of Glade Spring, for inviting me into your little village and allowing me to perform in your fair. I am pleased to be here and would enjoy my time here. I hope you all will too." He smiles strangely for everyone and then flourishes another bow before he begins his magic show.

Everyone in the crowd seemed perplexed by this and the chief of the village asks someone around him, "Did we hire this person? Anyone? No one? Really? Does anyone know who this guy is?"

People who just heard the magician making his introduction got curious and gather closer to the stage to watch the magic show.

The magician begins some simple tricks that most know is just presdigitation. But for those who have not seen magic before, they begin to Ooh and Aah at all the tricks.

And then the magician begins to flurish his hand around hims and starts to draw something on the ground where he stands. "The next trick is to die for." He laughs, to which the crowd laughs with him, not really sure why they are laughing at or for, but still doing so. Azog has seen fireballs and real magic a-plenty, and recognizes entertainment for those who don't get much, so pretty much ignores the mage at this point. Probably some junior prestidigitator trying to earn a few copper for next semester or whatever it is they do. He nods gravely to the villager he was talking to about some fight or other he'd been in some time ago. "Yes, it was like that." It takes a while but in the end, something begins to materialize. The animals all around the stage begin to run away, bleating , mooing or neighing in what appears to be panic. The crowd seems to become guarded as well, with some of them looking at each other and wondering what is going on. Someone says "The fireworks are about to start soon! I just know it" excitedly.

But no fireworks are to be had. Instead, something fiendish comes into existence. Nothing could be discerned about the image except that it has its wings curled around itself. Bat-like wings. And then, it begins to unfurl it, and a hideous, scaled creature can be seen behind it. It looked humanoid, with a large mouth. And when it opened its mouth, it has rows of razor sharp teeths. It smiles malevolently at all the people that are standing close to the stage.

The magician laughs hysterically and says, "Enjoy your after life! Care of you friendly mage, Terrence Fold. Ba-bye!" And with a puff of smoke, he disappears from the stage.

And all too sudden, the creature that was left behind shrieks an unnatural shriek, which causes the people around to begin to panic. They tried to turn around, but the effect has already begun. Those near the stage immediately convulse and then begin to change. Their skin becomes pallid and their eyes became jaundiced. Their teeth begin to sharpen and their upper limbs begin to lengthen. For those who have seen these creatures before, they look like ghouls.

And they begin to attack all the people around them...

As the dancing stops in order for people to go watch the magician, Elessa wanders over, curious herself. His phrasing is a litle weird, and something niggles at the back of her head saying there is danger. She picks up her sword where she left it to dance, and just in time too as the 'magician' summons a fiendish creature to kill everyone. "Run!" she shouts to the crowd as she draws her rapier, ready to fight it, not even aware of the other adventurers in the area.

What sort of revelry is this? Magic for entertainment? And why would some wish to die to be entertained? Some sort of sacrificial offering? All makes more sense when the otherworldly, unnatural thing arrives. (Uneth)

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Uneth ended. The villagers-turned-ghouls begin to swipe their clawed hands at the people around them, immediately paralyzing them. They don't seem to be interested in feeding at the moment, just getting everyone paralyzed. <OOC> Uneth says, "How many of the cursed villagers are about?" <OOC> Benthus says, "Right now? About 12 to 15 in number." <OOC> Benthus says, "Perception roll to get a more accurate number, please." GAME: Uneth rolls perception: (5)+14: 19 You paged Uneth with '15 ghouls.' <OOC> Uneth will cast Entangle on the area around and under the stage to affect as many of the ghoulish ones as possible. GAME: Uneth casts Entangle. Caster Level: 6 DC: 14 The people all around the stage begin to scream in panic, pushing and shoving each other to get away from the front where the ravenous undead are beginning to strike. "Help! "Hinder them, with vine and blade and stalk, my siblings..." <OOC> Benthus says, "Nine of the Ghouls have managed to jump out of the entangling vines."

It is now Ghouls' turn! Elessa is next!

Six of the ghouls struggle against the vines that have shot out of the ground and has bounded their arms and legs. Nine others manage to get away and begin to circle around the area where the spell has been cast, intent on satieting their hunger for human flesh...

It is now Elessa's turn! Korrani is next!

<OOC> Elessa says, "So a bunch of ghouls, and the winged one is taking flight?" <OOC> Benthus says, "Yes. The demon is heading towards the childrens area." <OOC> Elessa says, "Drop rapier, quick draw to get bow out, fire" GAME: Elessa rolls 1d20+15: (2)+15: 17 GAME: Elessa rolls 1d20+10: (20)+10: 30 GAME: Elessa rolls 1d20+10: (13)+10: 23 GAME: Elessa rolls 3d6: (10): 10 <OOC> Benthus says, "It... bounces off it's scaley hide (no damage). :(" Seeing the ghouls, but more after the winged creature, Elessa drops her rapier on the ground and quickly gets her shortbow. Not the best shot, she fires ones, going too low, then she fires again. It seems perfect, a most excellent shot, but it simply bounces off the creature, doing nothing more than maybe annoying it.

It is now Korrani's turn! Azog is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Korrani ended. Head shot! But it's still coming for her. She gets thrown off that it's still moving and draws another arrow and fires, but it whizzes past the ghoul.

GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order.

     Round One - Init 9.
It is now Azog's turn! Uninvited Guest is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Azog ended. <OOC> Azog says, "OK. I will step up and use Intimidating Prowess to make an intimidate check against all the bad guys, if they're within 30 ft." The entangling spell that Uneth has unleashed on the area near the stage play is indiscriminate in who it affects. Aside from the five ghouls who got caught, several more people are entangled as well. They try to pull out the vines that have their legs caught, but each time they succeed, another tendril of vines shoot up and take hold of them. All the while, the ghouls around them are trying to claw at them, straining against their venous restraints, and stretching their razor sharp claws to touch one of those caught in the spell... <OOC> Azog will use Dazzling Display, rather. Azog turns from his seat to see the monster summoned, and grimaces. Hefting his shield, he shoulders it and draws his blade. With a mighty shout, he barks a challenge to the summoned creature, whipping his blade around and showing his mastery of the form, hoping his challenge will draw it away from the villagers. Unfortunately, the demon thing is too far away to really care, and the undead are undead and not impressed by his skillful display.

The playground is covered by rapidly turn, chilling winds and precipitation falls in semi-solid slush. The ground becomes icy and the torrent obscures all vision. The children may be wet and cold for now, but they are also not such easy pickings for the unearthly being.

Elessa does a lovely twirl as her rapier slices through the neck of the ghoul, doing a very nice slice and decapitating it rather effectively. She then wobbles as it seems the fighting is over. "Woah... dizzy..."

There is still much chaos going around the village as people try to make sense of the madness that has just happened. "What in the blue blazes happened!?!" Said the village chief, all garbed in make-shift armour. There are a lot of wailing and sobbing as people are truely traumatized by the event, most especially since it has happened on their festival. It is likely they will not be celebrating this feast for several years.

Uneth is stooped more than usual as she clutches at claw and bite wounds.

All around you, you can see people gathering together and hugging each other for comfort and consolation, grieving for those that are dead and relieved that they are still alive. Guilty that they are still alive, and vengeful for the one who has brought this upon them. Terrence Fold. The name will not be forgotten. Not in the village of Glade Spring.
