Brakenfist's Mining.

That is the name of the what brings you to the guild on a cold blistery day. It seems that the company has recently opened a new mine and their miners were chased from the mine. They need someone to go and clear out what ever it is. The miners who were chased out and survived just babble about some ice, cold, white demons.

The mine company is paying well and they give you directions and a map to the mine. They want to resume work as soon as possible. This leads you to being up in the mountains outside of Alexandria trudging through the snow. The mine is supposed to be about a mile up the road. Even though you are travelling on a road, its a wagon road, so not much of one and covered with heavy snow, doesn't look like anything has been up this way in days.

Barbalau happens to be there not only because he is a Dwarf and he might know some things about the mountians, but also because the young inquisitor was in desperate need of money. He was the first to report for this task and he seems comfortable in the weather.

Snow is something that Jokul is just fine with. He comes from the parts of the world where cold and snow were not so much a common occurence as just a way of life, afterall. So through the snow and the cold he stomps his way, without any trouble or issue.

ANd right near the mine, he's eyeing over the map one last time with a wrinkle of his nose. "...I think this is the place."

James will take them. They're not the Khazad Duin but theyr'e close enough. Using his wings to augment his walking, since he can't just yet fly up at a brisk pace with ease, he stays in trhe middle of the group. "Ice demons," he says to the gropu in general. "I wonder if that's literally true, or just the idle chatter of miners."

Ansrir hmmms as he listens to the miner's reports of the ice, cold, white demons and hmmms to himself. "Well, there's all sorts of talk of demons these days, so it could be anything," he offers and mmmms, "But the talk of cold..." He mutters idly and frown.

Orenthal is in good spirits despite the weather and walks along the snow-coverered road with a steady strike, walking with his staff as he smiles to the others. He'd introduced himself as Orenthal back at the Guild and listens as the others speak. "Probably about half true," he says to James. "You don't usually get more than that from panicking men."

"And here I thought khazad were stoic and brave..." comes casual comment from Aya after the situation and statements of witnesses are revealed. "Demons have been spotted in and around the city. Now every frightening shadow is a demon." You keep trudging through the snow, but you are pretty sure that you are getting closer to the mine.

<OOC> James says, "Any chance I can use planar knowledge to know what kinds of demons are being seen?" <OOC> Zyla says, "there wasn't a good enough description given. the few miners that survived were not very coherent."

"Not everyone fits the stereotype," Jokul notes in a grumble, and with them nearing the mine, he just crumples up the map and shoves it into his belt pouch. "Alright. How about we go find out, then?"

James nods, briefly clutching a small hourglass symbol. "Yes, let's explore, and bring light to the mystery," he trills with religious intensity.

Orenthal says to Aya, "You can be stoic and brave all you like, but if something comes out that can kill you, it's not cowardice to get away. Though it's as likely to be a goblin as a demon, I think. But if someone comes out screaming demon, I'm going to run, I'm not going to stand there and second guess him. Though I guess that's what we're all doing, because if it was a demon, they wouldn't have brought around a first-timer like me." To Jokul, he suggests, "Well, we can just go in and look. Whatever's there, we'll either have to fight or run from, but we won't know til we see it. I can try and sneak up, if you really want...."

Ansrir nods and smiles slightly, looking at the others. "Whatever it is that has come up from hell or another foul lair, we shall find a way to dispatch it," he says and smiles, a hand going to clutch the symbol hanging around his neck and give it a light squeeze.

"Indeed," Aya acknowledges and dips her head to the return comments. She then gestures ahead with a slender smile. "By all means."

GAME: Barbalau refreshes spells. As you get closer you see the remains of the miners, dwarves and gnomes frozen solid in ice and snow.

GAME: Barbalau casts Resistance. Caster Level: 2 DC: 14 <OOC> James says, "Okay I've got natural, planar knowledges plus healing. I want to check the bodies for whatever clues I can find." <OOC> James says, "find out whatever happened to them." <OOC> Zyla says, "roll knowledge/nature, and/or arcana" GAME: James rolls knowledge/nature: (3)+6: 9

Barbalau murmers a spell under his breath as they prepare to venture forward - he looks about then to the others in his party.

You paged James with 'somethind froze them not sure, what caused it though magic or natural event, or something some creature did.'

James goes to investigate one of the frozen corpses, for signs of foul play, Crouching down and looking, wings flapping behind him as he settles in. "I have a hard time telling if this is natural, magical, or demonic even, but they were definitely frozen."

Aya's eyes narrow as some of the ice and snow is not frozen water, but frozen khazad and gnome. "Well, these miners are certainly stoic..." Her eyes immediately shift ahead towards the mine and what may or may not be present.

<OOC> Barbalau has monster/lore if it would help?

Ansrir hmms as he looks at the frozen dwarves and gnomes, frowning lightly. "Well, we definately have a solid problem here," he muters lightly, "What if we were to defrost someone who had been frozen?" he offers.

"...That's a terrible joke," Jokul mutters to Aya's way with a brief sideglant of his eyes. "That's not going to help. They're dead already at this point. Trust me-- I've seen enough people die from the cold in my time."

<OOC> Zyla says, "you can, barbalau, you roll knowledge/nature, or knowledge/arcana or both can't remember if monster lore is already added in your bonus or if you do it manually."

Orenthal doesn't know much about looking at bodies that are already dead, so he watches just generally around to make sure we don't get ambushed.

"They might be, but what about one of us," offers Ansrir curiously to Jokul, "Are we done for if we become an immediate block, or is there a chance we could get defrosted and srurvive? It is good to understand so we can do this tactically."

GAME: Barbalau rolls Knowledge/Nature+4: (16)+4+4: 24 <OOC> Barbalau says, "ohh it rolls +4 auto" GAME: Barbalau rolls Knowledge/Nature: (5)+4: 9

You paged Barbalau with 'some kind of breath weapon probably, maybe a winterwolf or something similar, though not sure.'

Barbalau tilts her head "we have any rangers?" he asks "I would guess a breath weapon... maybe a winterwolf.." He nudges one of his own dwarven men and he sighs. "If you would like to dethaw one it wouldnt hurt"

Aya keeps her attention on what's ahead, not the minercicles. "We can always thaw them on the way back. For now, I'd like to avoid avoid joining them, so keep your eyes on you surroundings..." She continues to move for the mine, or at least up the road towards the alleged location of said mine.

You can all see the entrance to the mine now, more frozen ones, some of these are missing pieces too, like something has been coming and biting off chuncks.

Orenthal is sticking with the group, just for now. He says, "Yeah, there's definitely -something- going on here. Still not sure what, though I expect we'll find out pretty soon if we keep moving forward. He chuckles, and as Aya heads for the mine, he'll go forward, too. Just ... very carefully.

"Well, I'm not a healer, but I kiiind of doubt it," Jokul offers in answer to Ansrir with a wince. "If you're going to freeze that thoroughly, well..." He lets out a heavy sigh with that particular thought, and even hefts his massive sword away from his shoulder, just to keep it properly at the ready.

Ansrir nods softly in reply to Jokul and hmmms, "I understand, just making sure that we know what we're getting into," he offers and draws his blade.

Barbalau looks around the snow for any wolf tracks as they get closer to the frozen ones with bits taken off them. He shakes his head and he draws his rapier as he looks out for the things that caused this.

The entrance to the mine is pretty open, nothing there apparently though other than frozen miners missing chunks. The snow continues into the mine.

Orenthal observes, "It doesn't generally snow -inside- a mine, does it?" He looks to the dwarves for this answer.

"So something brought it inside," Jokul suggests with a faint growling sound sent through grit-together teeth, hand visiblytightening to the grip of his sword. "It never snows anywhere *inside*."

Barbalau tilts his head a little "some of it can get into the mouth... but not really inside no." He says as he moves to lead the way into the mine.

Ansrir nods. "Whatever it is, it isn't natural," he agrees and frowns, looking around at the mine. "Hopefully the snow doesn't pick up. Would hate to be snowed into a mineshaft."

Inside the mine it looks like it goes into the mountain, though for sure where, would have to go inside.

Orenthal takes a moment to light a torch, then proceeds in.

GAME: Barbalau casts Light. Caster Level: 2 DC: 14

Barbalau murmers a quiet spell as he moves within the stone his eyes naturally searching the rock for passages and secrete hidden ways that only Mountain Dwarf would be able. He is comfortable below ground though he remains alert and searching for tracks and signs of the winterwolf

Aya lifts a hand to shield her face when Barbalau begins to glow. "Now that you've made yourself, and all near you, an obvious target, shall we continue?" She doesn't bother to answer the quesiton about snowing indoors or underground, but moves ahead. Ahead and away from Barbalau.

James appreciates the lgiht with a nod, and goes along with the group, nearer Barbalau.

"Okay, I'll take front, keep the torch in the center," Jokul suggests -- and following his own words, he trudges his way through and past the other people to get himself in the front of the file. "Not a huge fan of a tight place liket his. A fireball would be... unpleasant." With Aya's words, he directs his eyes over his shoulder to her, in a blank gaze. "...Not everyone can see in the dark, lass. We have to count our priorities here."

Barbalau scoffs as Aya moves ahead and Jokul follows behind her. "Hope the muse sees fit to freeze you darling." he says back to her. He moves behind Jokul as if to flank him.

Ansrir leeps walking along with the others, keeping his sword at the ready for anything, his eyes taking in the space he can see with the light that is available. As the positioning begins, he moves himself further towards the back to help protect the rear.

<OOC> Zyla says, "perception" GAME: Orenthal rolls perception: (15)+5: 20 GAME: Jokul rolls perception: (9)+3: 12 GAME: Aya rolls perception: (8)+12: 20 GAME: James rolls perception: (19)+12: 31 GAME: Barbalau rolls perception: (20)+9: 29 GAME: Ansrir rolls perception: (19)+3: 22

You paged (James, Barbalau) with 'you hear sounds, like something eating or chewing on something.'

The mineshaft seems to open up into a chamber ahead.

James has been trying to stay in the middle of the group. Hearing something, he puts a hand up, lifting itfrom his cloak. He trills "Careful now. We're getting close to something. Something with a mouth, that is using it. Even if it's eating now, it might yet be hungry."

Orenthal will proceed forward as quietly as he can.

Barbalau gives a little nod to James and waits until they can actually see something, he points down a corridor "I heard it from that direction."

Jokul holds up one hand over his shoulder, in a fist, upon James' warning and lowers his stance slightly. "If it's eating now, then that means it's at least not readied to ambush us. Casters?" A look over his shoulder. "If you can do something for the whole group, now's the time."

<OOC> James will put a bless on the group at Jokul's suggestion <OOC> Zyla says, "ok cast and pose it." GAME: James casts Bless. Caster Level: 3 DC: 16

James nods to Jokul, raising up a small symbol of an hourglass he carries with him, and trilling in his own language a prayer to Raven. The direction of the noises is from the cavern ahead, you are on the edge of the entrance.

GAME: Barbalau casts Divine Favor. Caster Level: 2 DC: 15

Barbalau follows james though his prayers are only on himself pileing on his resistance already he gives a nod "I am ready."

Ansrir nods and tilts his head and mmms slightly, considering as he listens to the others, the sword at the ready. "Let's go," he says softly with a smile.

"Yeah," Jokul echoes after Ansrir and lifts himself up from his knee. "Birdboy, keep in the back and work your mojo. Anyone else who wants to get up close, on me. Let's do this." And thus, the Aesir sets forward, for the chamber...

Aya tilts her head at the others and their gestures towards, and mention of sounds. When some call prayers to their god or goddess, she simply calls to the shadows around her. Charcoal skin darkends further as the shadows answer and cling to her flesh as a semi-solid substance. She then moves for the chamber.

<OOC> Aya says, "As others are buffing, I may as well spend Ki for Barkskin." <OOC> Zyla says, "ok"

James stays in the middle of the group, wanting to stay in touch range of folks like Jokul until the fight starts.

As you enter the cavern, the faint light you have shows two massive creatures on the far side. They look like dragons, though do not have wings. Their scales are all white and there is like a club at the end of their tails. They look up and see you about the time you see them.

One of the large dragon things moves forward, lumbering and crossing the cavern almost the whole way, it isn't that big after all and skids to a stop not too far from everyone, and his head leans over to snap at Orenthal, but misses.

<OOC> Ansrir says, "Wll, that may change my plan now. But that doesn't stop him from taking a bound forward with a low ducking movement made to avoid the overhead-swinging claw, with his sword brought up swinging high when he rises upright, sparking along the ground before it lifts off and goes through the frosted beast's side. "IT's a party now, I guess!

James wastes no time. Seeing these rather large things coming at the group, he takes no chances. You can't heal others when you're yourself knocked out, so he trills a prayer and places a shimmering magical field around himself.

Claws pierce through Jokul's breastplate and leave a trio of rather unfortunately wide wounds across his chest. He is *not* happy about that. All while trying to ignore the fact that he's bleeding pretty copiously, he still spins himself around along the dragon's side to try and carry the blade into the thing's neck -- but it slithers *JUST* out of the wya at the last second. DAmnit!

James winces at the situation. These look nasty. So, having shielded himself he gets to work, raising that symbol of a hour glass over his head, and closing his eyes briefly to channel energy to the party, attempting to aid the wounded.

"Ow," is all that Ansrir says when the feeling of getting chilled to the bone rips through him. He's been taught to keep himself grounded in the combat, focusing on the moment, and that is what he does. Treating hisd immediate wound, he presses his hand to himself and mutters a soft prayer to Vardama to allow him to give the honored fallen dwarves the burial they deserve. Then taking a step back to get out of range, he lifts his bow and sights along the arrow, letting it fly to his target, this time smacking true to his target.

Aya doesn't like snow-breathing lizards. She darts between Ansrir and Jokul, ducks the swipe of limb, and strikes the thing on the side of the head with a backhand, hoping to unsettle it. She seems to do more than that, care of its prior wounds. It stumbles and crumples.

Orenthal rushes forward, braving the creature's counterattack as he tries to get into position. Unfortunately, he winds up eating a claw for his trouble, and he's wheezing as he stumbles close enough, swinging weakly with his quarterstaff. His attack is not effective at all, and he winds up leaning on the staff to catch his wind as the critter is pretty much able to ignore him.

Jokul's used to the cold. That's what he likes to tell himself and everyone else, anyway-- he's from STormgarde afterall. BUT. When it comes down to two frostdragons literally spitting ice close to the temperature of absolute zero, he FEELS that to the BONE. HE's getting awfully close to that point of freezing death he was talking about earlier. So rather than stopping, he forces his frozen bones to pouncing through the snow and frost left through the air with a pained roar echoing through the air as he flies up and then down with the weight of his sword as it goes through the thing's flank. "RRRRAAAH!"

James shakes hhis head at how dangerous this is. He circles around the dragon-like thing, keeping his distance but trying to get central to the group. His symbol of Raven, Navos, is lifted again, and he draws healing energy to the party.

Ansrir watches as the first dragon thing falls, grimacing as he gets hit with a wintery blast of freshness by its friend, companion, mate, whatever these things are. Healing washes over him and he offers a light smile before turning his attention to the remaining monster, arrow nocked into the bow and then the string pulled back and arrow let fly to the target, doing a glancing blow.

Orenthal, who had been mangled and ineffectual all night is probably not even being watched by the monster, and so he takes a deep breath and pauses to concentrate. He can put a hurting on someone, if he can catch them unable to defend themselves, and so he sidles into a slightly better position, and he grips his staff in the center, striking it overhand, then backspinning it almost immediately to catch it with the upswing as well. Turns out it hadn't been worried about him, and his shots are both clean and hard, and after a pregnant pause as Orenthal stands in the guard position, the monster simply collapses to the ground. Both of the creatures are down and don't look to be moving, everyone is cold and hurting a bit.

Barbalau takes a giant breath as the creature falls and he sighs very lowly "these things... have no treasure... what kind of animals are they?" he asks himself as he examines them.

James lets out a heavy sigh at the dropping of the creature. Then letting out a happy trill, he walks to the center of the group and throws out one more healing, just in case. "Well done. Those looked very dangerous."

Ansrir hmmms as he looks around at the others, smiling slightly before he slings his bow back and nods. "So," he offers with a light chuckle as he walks over to the rest of the party, pressing a hand on Jokul first, a soft prayer being stated about the divine light of Vardama coming to help aid in prolonging the life of the honorable warrior, before he then turns his attention to Barbalau and does the similar prayer to call down the holy favor. "That should help, somewhat, with the pain," he offers.

Aya is not one to complain about healing, specifically on herself. She eyes the one that just went down and nudges it with a boot toe. "Most stupid creatures don't have much use for coin or gems. Does anyone know what they are? Or why they came here?"

Jokul has left himself to panting heavily while leaning against his sword -- improvised leaning post as he makes it to be sometimes. All teh accumulated damage and fatigue takes a lot out of a guy even as hardy as him. But, he manages to straighten himself out after the healing provided and-- promptly goes stomping towards the closer slumped dragon body and... jams his sword into the thing's neck. "Don't know, don't care," he growls. "They wake up, they start eating people again. Gotta make sure."

<OOC> Zyla says, "nature rolls if want to id it" <OOC> James says, "moment"

Orenthal is wondering the same thing Aya is, and closes his mouth as she asks first. His clothes are a bit rumped and torn, and there's a fair amount of blood that'll need to be cleaned off the lace cuffs, but his body is whole, so he's not going to complain. "Well, that certainly looks like what we came here to fight," he says. "Should we look and check for more?"

<OOC> James says, "I'm gonna use guidance for a +1 on the knowledge" <OOC> Zyla says, "k" GAME: James casts Guidance. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15

Barbalau thanks Ansrir "thank you my friend... I feel great now." he says as he breathes in trying to understand what he is seeing "there is nothing more not in this cavern anyway."

GAME: James rolls knowledge/nature + 1: (15)+6+1: 22

You paged James with 'Drakes. Ice drakes, probably were nesting or getting ready to since there are no signs of eggs.'

James prays quietly, asking Raven for guidance, then walks up to one of the creatures the group just took out. Putting a hand on it, head rolling to the side, he trills slowly. "Now that I can actually properly take my time, these are Ice Drakes. And..." He walks around. "They were likely preparing to nest."

Ansrir hmmms softly, nodding to Barbalau at his thanks. "I am just an instrument of the Goddess, your thanks should be to her," he offers before turning to James. "Preparing, which means they have not, so there should be no little baby drake eggs around?" he asks, looking at the corpses. "I wonder if we can haul these back to town," he mutters.

Orenthal hrms at James. "Ice Drakes? I see. Well, then. If they were preparing to nest, then it'd be just these two?" he asks. As far as hauling them back to town, he says, "I'm sure the artificers will pay a pretty penny for fresh parts. And the dwarves probably want them hauled off anyhow, so maybe we can get paid twice for it." He grins at his own cleverness.

Barbalau nods his head to orenthal as he smiles "Id like armor off this one.." he kicks the beast.

"They're not going to be hauled out of here as whole," Jokul points out while he moves towards the other body, just to sink his blade into it's neck too. But-- right after that, he turns to flash a grin to the others over his shoulder. "Who wants to help me with chopping?"

Aya looks at the large beasts and smirks. "If they want them moved, the many, many wise and strong miners can move them. A bit of meat and scale is hardly worth the effort and stains."

You make contact with the miners and they come to clean things up, you are paid well for your services, the meat and scales of the beasts really aren't usuable for armor and the taste is off. More than liking because they are not alive anymore, and magic went into how tough thier hides were, they are not true dragons after all. You are helped on your way after getting paid.
