  • Title: Midnight Menagerie
  • Emitter: Lyrana
  • Characters: Blackjack Level 3, Arkun Level 3, Lilyth Level 3, Bahken Level 5
  • Place: Outside Alexandria
  • Time: Mar 11, 2015
  • Summary: Collector hires Guild members to recover a shipment.
  • APL: 4
  • Encounter 1: 2 Drakes (1 Thunder, 1 Frost) CR 4

All of you were contacted by the Adventurer's Guild about a job. It was something that should be relatively easy. A collector had a caravan coming to Alexandria and it ran into problems. The specifics of the problems weren't really given only that the collector wanted the cargo back. You are given the location of where the caravan ran into problems. And the description of the cargo that the collector most wants, 6 large eggs. The eggs are rocklike and good sized. You will be well compensated, the request came with an as soon as possible tag with it, so it involves heading out as the moon is starting to rise.

The road is quiet as you head towards the location of the problems the caravan had. The location is rapidly approaching.

Lilyth is fine heading out during the evening. In fact, she looks up to the moon and smiles at it. "The goddess looks well upon us in this, blessing us with her face this evening. This should go well," she looks to the others. Of course, that means everything is about to go horribly, horribly wrong.

Sandals slapping as he walks, Arkun eats as he walks, feeding himself a slice of apple that he's cut using the small dagger that seems to be the man's only weapon. "At least there's the offer of good payment to get us.. motivated?" He questions, before looking up at the moon. His lips purse outwards, before he continues chewing on the apple, a quick swallow. "I think that the moon is going to rise and fall no matter what, to be honest. But, I will take the luck of anything I can get, I figure." With that, he lets a cut slice of apple fall down into the front of his robes, where a 'yarf' and the sound of crunching fruit can be heard eminating. "This collector must be having the urge for some large omelettes.."

Bahken rides his light warhorse with his bow out across his pommel and the reigns in one hand. He glances at Lilyth, smiling, "Perhaps. I'd still feel better if I could see clearly by moonlight.." He glances at Arkun, "Rise and fall yes.. be visible, not always.. spring showers are coming right?"

There is just the moonlight for now, but you know you are getting closer to where the caravan ran into troubles.

You think you see some wagons in the distance. Its hard to tell by moonlight.

GAME: Bahken casts Dancing Lights. Caster Level: 5 DC: 15

Bahken sings softly as he blinks at the distance and releasing the reigns makes a twirling motion with his hand as he sings softly, o/~ This little light of mine, I'm let it shine.. o/~ The power in his voice channeling into four torch like lights that hover about 100ft ahead of the group.

Lilyth tilts her head as she spots the wagons. "Is that what we are partially looking for?" she points to it.

"Hair's lookin' particularly, er..." Blackjack speaks with the witch, about something entirely unrelated. The rest of the adventurers are largely ignored for the time being, "Fawfy." She concludes, clearly pleased with her choice of descriptor. "New oil?" She leans toward the witch, taking a loud, obvious sniff. "... New perfume? Yer boyfriend should be happy." She snorts, then barks out a laugh, arms swinging as she flounces along in her rolling gait. "Should be jus' 'round now when things ge'--, ah." She stops, gesturing wild and lazy-armed toward the wagons. "Aye, ri' on schedule, isn't it?"

"I'm glad you noticed. It's a new oil I got fr--" Arkun trails off after the boyfriend comment, and rolls his eyes. "Yes, yes, I'm a woman. You're simply jealous that your hair can't compete. But, as a runner up prize," The Witch pulls two small bottles from the pouches around his waist, the cloudy liquid within still swirling as he offers them with his apple-holding hand. "If you get too badly hurt, chug one of these. Chug both if need be. Be thankful I add honey and other things for taste.." He comes to a stop, almost tripping over his own sandals as the wagons are pointed out. "Looks like we're just about there. And of course we're going to be in trouble, otherwise they wouldn't hire us folk."

As you get closer, you can see that it consists of two covered wagons, but whatever was pulling the wagons, there is no signs of. The wagons look like they were torn apart. The canvas covers are shredded as are the box frames of the wagons with the wood laying in pieces all around.

Bahken keeping the area of the torn up carts lit, Bahken rides closer and if he doesn't notice any movement, he'll dismount and start searching through the wreckage to see if he can find any sign of the eggs.

"Aye, am are, s'true." The pirate lass gives a sad, relenting nod in response to Arkun's words. "Desperately jealous, me. Jus'..." She reaches out a gloved hand, fingertips trembling, bottom lip quivering in awkward anticipation. "Jus' lemme..." She licks her lips, eyes going wide, brows creasing to proffer the proper beggary. "Lemme touch it." And then, he ruins the moment by changing the subject. "Ye shouldnae have, lad. M'afraid I didnae ge' ye nothin'." She heaves a sigh, "In consolation, ye can feel free t' gaze upon my grandness." She continues walking, side by side with the witch. "An' by which I mean m'arse." It's only then that the proper attention is placed upon the torn wagons, her lips pursing before she gives a click of her tongue and moves to draw the greatsword from it's home on her back. Just in case, of course. "Aye, ye gae look, I'll ... no'. Jus' gunnae no." She ushers Bahken forward with a wiggly-fingered gesture of dismission.

<OOC> Lyrana says, "perception checks again"

Lilyth chuckles at the others as she startsto study the wagons. "I have no idea what could have done this... These are utterly destroyed..."

There appears to be the remains of a large cage that would have been in each wagon, smashed open, and three crates that look like that had the eggs in them, but they too are smashed.

You paged (Blackjack, Bahken) with 'there are large clawed prints on the ground multiple sets, all around the remains of the wagons.'

Bahken pages: Anything to suggest they're still around or have gone?

Bahken pages: Also, the smashed crates I'm guessing do not have smashed eggs?

To (Lyrana, Bahken), Blackjack pages: I could technically try to track to see where they came from and where they're goin' to.

Blackjack pages: I'm gunna get Arkun's fox to assist in tracking, if the tracking is a viable option.

You paged Bahken with 'so sign of smashed eggs.'

You paged Blackjack with 'survival roll.'

Blackjack pages: Are we in forest?

"I think something with claws got loose.." Bahken says, indicating claw marks in the magical torch light as he drops a smashed crate that should have held eggs. "I think they got the eggs too... took them with them rather... If they aren't still here..."

You paged Blackjack with 'not at the mmoment.'

GAME: Blackjack rolls survival: (6)+8: 14

GAME: Arkun rolls 1d20+5: (8)+5: 13

You paged Blackjack with 'you can tell they went off into the woods, half the tracks seemed to come from that direction, other half started at the wagons.'

"Oi! Yip! Yarf!" Blackjack calls out, though to whom she is speaking is largely left a mystery. And why she's barking is likely as confusing. She crouches by the tracks, head tilting this way and that, brows furrowing in thought. "Aye, somethin's been 'bout th'wagons... think I could find 'em IF SOMEONE MIGHT HELP." She offers impatiently, head rolling before rigidly jerking toward Arkun's direction. A sharp whistle follows, "I gave you jerky, ye wee shite, ye'd best no' lemme waste treats. It weren't fer nothin'!" There's a yip, before the head of a small, large-eared fox pops up from within Arkun's robes. A small, unintimidating growling, another yarf, and it wriggles free and scampers toward the pirate, sniffing the whole way. "Aye, s'what I thought... ye bastard ye, tiny f.." She trails off under her breath, returning to her examination. They both seem to come to the same conclusion. "Big beasties still alive, it would seem t'me... looks like they gone woodwards, some fae here, some fae no' here." She gestures along the trail she's found. "I'll know more once we're in th'woods." She makes a bit of a face, then a clumsy one-shouldered shrug. "Probably."

"Well, I guess we've got our course set out for us then, don't we?" Arkun chips in, obviously not really wanting to hang around beside some wagons that've been wrecked and demolished. "We're better getting a move on, getting this stuff done, and then getting back to Alexandria before any of us get eaten." His gaze drops to the small fox animal, and he leans down, snapping his fingers twice before it scampers back to him, and it's promptly deposited back within the protective folds of the mans robes.

"Wait. A Drake? Why are we being charged by a bloody Drake?!" Arkun cries out in some dismay. There's a moment where the Witch arches an eyebrow, getting a good ol' stare into the creature's eyeball as the weird Witch Juju does it's work, feeding it's mind with doubt. "We aren't here to hurt you! We were sent to see what happened to the.." His jaw works, talking in Draconic is difficult, considering the rasping and all going on. "Carts? Carts." He states, throwing his hands up in mild surrender. "Don't eat me."

Lilyth blinks as the drake doesn't get hit by her spell, and so she works another spell. This time there is a glow about her.

A pair of glowing eyes peer out towards the Drake, as Arkun takes a ball of lightning to the side as he jumps away, shielding himself momentarily with an audiable grunt of pain. "That stung quite a bit." He mutters, before raising up a hand. A few fluid gestures with an incantation, and a purple beam of energy streams from the man's hand, striking the Drake and sucking the life from its muscles. "Listen. Or get hurt. You have your eggs back, yes? Then we can /leave/." The man responds in Draconic.

"OI!" Blackjack bellows at the drake as it takes a bite out of crime. Er, Arkun. "Ye'll fack aff or I'll batter ye!" It, evidently, does not fack aff as requested. "RIGHT. 'MON THEN!" She leans into the 'charge', twisting her tiny body as she brings her greatsword in a grand upward swing that bites into it's side harder than it bit into the witch. There's a sickly thump when impact is made and blade's edge nestles through scale and flesh, before she jerks it free and readies herself for another blow. "I'll have ye know I've dibs on assaultin' tha' lassie boy, an' yer gunnae muss his hair!" She continues hurling 'abuse', her expression quite severe, and tricorn slightly skewed to one side.

The huge white lizard comes out of the trees now, knowing it has been seen and breathes a cone of frost at Bahken. Ice crystals forming in the air as the breath passes and tries to freeze Bahken where he is standing.

GAME: Lyrana advances the initiative order.

     Round Two - Init 9.
It is now Bahken's turn! Lilyth is next!

<OOC> Bahken needs a little help on positioning. Both drakes came out of the woods. Blue moved up to Arkun and Blackjack is now behind it.

The white came out a bit off to the side and attacked the annoying singer? Are they Large? Huge? How close are they to each other and how close is the white one to me now?

<OOC> Lyrana says, "they are huge, they cover a 15' area. right now they are probably about 10-20 feet from you that is Arkun, Blackjack and Thunder, given that you were all searching and not standing clumped together. the white one is 20' from you."

<OOC> Bahken says, "And we're still amongst the wreckage of the two wagons right?"

<OOC> Arkun says, "is it.. Normal > Huge > Large or Normal > Large > Huge?"

<OOC> Lyrana says, "normal, large, huge"

<OOC> Bahken nods so they're more than 10' away from each other and too big for grease to help at all

<OOC> Lyrana says, "I will say you could try to affect the white one but it might have reduced effect. it would affect Arkun and blackjack more than the blue lizard."

<OOC> Bahken says, "Free action maintain bard song, standard action glitterdust the blue one that's meleeing arkun and blackjack, move action: move behind wreckage as cover while readying shield, free action, drop bow."

<OOC> Bahken says, "wait.. 10' radius.."

<OOC> Bahken says, "that's 20'"

<OOC> Bahken says, "Can I get both blue and white with a 20' circle of glitter?"

<OOC> Lyrana says, "no. because you will have to aim it above the drake to avoid hitting arkun and blackjack"

<OOC> Bahken says, "I don't think it will hit both unless I drop it on the blue dead on.. can I drop it so it just hits Arkun, and the two dragons?"

<OOC> Bahken says, "err drakes"

<OOC> Arkun says, "I'm going to be FABULOUS"

<OOC> Lyrana says, "no. you could hit blackjack and both drakes. since blackjack is behind the blueone."

Meanwhile Bahken beats a retreat stage left, sliding on his shield and dropping his bow beside him as he looks at the angry white drake that gave him such an icy blast

<OOC> Bahken says, "The AoO bit for blindness is under the Total Concealment rule: "You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies.""

"Well ain't that just fabulous. You keep chopping it to bits, I'm guessing my attempt at diplomacy has utterly failed. If it doesn't give in, we can simply use it for spell components and potions." Arkun states, as being bitten by a Drake really does a number on your feeling mercy meter. Wincing as he pops the cork on one of the cloudy potions, the Witch gulps down the contents and lets out a hiss of pain as the wounds forcefully seal themselves over, the bleeding stopping almost entirely. His right eye gives off an eerie glow as it settles upon the White Drake, causing it to flinch momentarily.

<OOC> Bahken says, "Free action, bardic performance, standard action: glitterdust just the white drake, move action, get closer while drawing longsword"

The white drake moves over and tries to bite into Blackjack since its hurting the blue one the most, and misses with its huge teeth.

"What's that, lass? Diplomatickin' o'er soon as they ruin yer best Sunday dress? Diddums... tsk. Ksh. Pff." Blackjack snorts out a soft snooted 'hmph', flicking her hair back over her shoulder with a quick nose-in-the-air jerk of her head to the side. It's about then that claws and teeth start whiffing about her diminutive frame, a brow slowly quirking as it's nearly fully in the wrong direction. "Lairds, I almost feel bad, I mean... it ain't e'en ... it's... sae sad." Apparently she doesn't feel too badly about it, however, as she grunts and heaves her massive blade into another momentum-assisted swing that sluices into the broad abdomen of the drake that had been assailing the witch previously. Blood spatter is plentiful now, the ground awash in wasting life, flicking off the blade that carries on in continual motion. "Ho!" She dodges the white drake's snapping maw. "Ye listen here!" Her body still moves, a fluid dervish that dreads the stillness. "I'm tryin'a dae somethin', ye crazy bitch!"

His throat bulges horribly, before his mouth distends as a horrible chanting noise escapes, promptly followed by a swarm of spiders that pours from the Witches opened mouth. His shoulders roll as he continues heaving, the spiders massing together in a swarm of small, pissed off creatures that immediately hurl themselves over the white drake, infesting inbetween its scales as they begin to bite and inject their many poisons.

"Aye! Don' ye bite me! I'll--OH GODS WHY!?" Blackjack will never get used to seeing that happen. There's a 'subtle' gagging that wracks her body, causing her to nearly miss in that wild swinging of hers. "O LAIRDS, THEY'RE E'ERYWHARRRGGHNNMB! AAAHHHGGRRRGHHLLB!" As blood sprays once more, a new spray joins it -- it's fragrant, much like the witch's oils. Only not in the same way. The pirate heaves, adding insult to injury for the poor blue lizard, now awash in her dinner, lunch, and what seems to be some sort of daquiri. She must be used to sickin' on the run, however, as she's sidestepping the swipping, gnashing ire of the white drake simultaneously. "I'm KINDA busHYYUUURRRGH!"

The vomitting has finally taken it's toll on Blackjack's accuracy. The world is left shattered by disappointment! The pirate turns once the blue drake goes down, staggered by the remnants of horrific visual, her blade swinging just wide as it skims the scales of ol' Whitey, a singing ring, sharp and grating is let out. "Bugger me!" She howls, glaring across to Arkun, "But nae kissin', I know what's been in there!" She points accusingly in his direction, moving to steady herself, sword still in hand.

"Damn it!" she says before cursing in draconic once more.

She grunts as one of the drake's claws makes purchase, and she hisses in a breath. "Ye wan' yer go, aye?!" Her ire is renewed by the pain that ripples through her body, the sword once more tracing a crimson gash through the snow white scales; a dramatic and artistic thing, really, that blatant contrast. She should take some time to admire it, but she's trying not to die. "All this fer -eggs-!" She huffs, "EGGS!" Surely, this is the beginning of a trademark battlecry.

o/~ Close your mouth and open up your heart and baby satisfy me! o/~ Bahken sings out drawing back the blade as the beast focused on Blackjack on the other side. Again, it glitters with mystical energy as the sword drives home and the great beast collapses. As it does so, Bahken finally lets the song end.

With the fall of both drakes, the night is earily quiet again.

"Lairds tunderin'," Blackjack grouses, placing a hand at her ribs where the claws had made contact, drawing away her hand to look down at the bloodied leather. "Egg killer, indeed, aye... could murder me some eggs ri' now." She staggers back, before dropping down onto her rump with a thump, knees up and blade rested beside her as she takes a moment to catch her breath. The stink of her sick and the spilled innards of the slain beasts make it an unappealing place to rest, but she seems unphased. Her head droops before she pushes her hair, and her hat, back over her head, shoulders rolling as tensions lessen. "Speakin' of," She looks absolutely knackered about now. "Don'suppose anyone seen 'em, eh? Th'eggs, I mean... weren't that what we came fer?"

"I'm not feeling very hungry.." Arkun replies, maybe it's the vomiting spiders. Maybe its the vomit. Maybe it's the dead drakes. The man slowly slides down to sit himself, taking the time to take a few slow breaths. "I have no idea about the eggs. I doubt those Drakes had them, considering the insults that were hurled at us. So, the caravan got robbed. But we now have some drake scales and meat and eyes and claws and all sorts of good stuff to bring back with us.."

Bahken blinks at Lilyth, "You could understand them? " he asks, wiping off his blade before sheathing it. He slides his shield back into place and steps away from the beasts as he fishes out his bow from the rubble, "Anyone badly hurt?" he calls out. Then to answer Blackjack, "I imagine if we check where they came from, we might find them.. they probably stole them back.. Think they actually fit in the cages?" he asks glancing back at whats left of the cages. It does look like they would fit in the cages. THere are tracks back into the woods from where they came.

"You leave their bodies alone!" Lilyth shouts at Arkun, moving up closer to him. "They were looking for their young that must have been stolen from them. They attacked us because they thought we had the eggs." She seems to ruffle a bit and looks to Bahken. "Yes... I can speak the dragon's tongue."

"... They're dead, lass. What does it matter if'n he uses 'em fer magical matters? 'Sides, there's money in reagents, as well... an' given it were me these beasties were slashin' at, I'm thinkin' I might have somethin' tae say 'bout th'bodies, mm?" Blackjack quirks a brow, tilting her head to regard Lilyth. "Ye aren't th'only one here... means ye aren't th'only one what gets tae decide what happens tae th'remains." She shakes her head, heaving a sigh. "I'll look fer 'em once I've had a second. Jus' a li'l winded, m'afraid." She retorts to Bakhen and his mention of following where they came from.

GAME: Blackjack rolls survival: (8)+8: 16

Lilyth looks horrified at Blackjack. "They are intelligent creatures. If they were elves or dwarves, or even humans, would you cut them up for reagents and profit? It's barbaric to think of doing that. And if you're going to do it, then I will be no part of it." She glares at both Arkun and Blackjack before she starts to go off into the dark, away off them and the bodies.

Bahken taps a wand in his pack, "Well, if you need some healing let me know.. Otherwise, we've got two drakes and two cages.. so... assuming they busted themselves out, all we have left is to retrieve their eggs.. You can debate over the ethics of it.. but I'd like to get paid if possible."

"You're not the only one that speaks the language. And you took the job to go hunt for the eggs anyway, so.. Er." Arkun waves a hand at Lilyth, before gesturing over towards Bahken and Blackjack, "Logic, and the way of the world as it is anyway. I'm not a fan of hauling unborn drake eggs around for gods knows what, but we picked up the job anyway." The Witch then leans to the side, slowly pushing himself back up onto his feet.

You paged Blackjack with 'you find 3 eggs back in the treeline, and signs of more tracks leading off, but they are cold andway old.'

"... Guess that's settled, then." Blackjack offers by way of response to Lilyth's apparent outrage. Nobody wants to know the answer to the question of humans, elves and dwarves. She shrugs, then, and moves to begin her investigation of the tracks in order to locate their well-earned payday. "S'all about th'platinums, aye." She asides to Bahken, offhandedly. "Set tae gettin' yer shite, lassie," She nods to Arkun, "So's we can get on our way. Don't need nae linger here." She manages to find 3 of the eggs as she snuffles about the treeline. "S'more tracks o'er here, but... too old fer me tae do much about now." She calls out. "Up tae ye's."

YOu are about to get the eggs and remains back to the city and get them to where they are going. Some might even give the guards a heads up as to the mission. You are thanked and paid.
