Inmost Sea-capades

From Tenebrae
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The last week you've all been aboard the ships. Several have been sent out from the Alexandrian Navy, with the heave of waves on the Inmost sea. You're favoring farther west than is generally acceptable this time of year making the way quite rigorous on the stomach, but for good reason.

Naval combat is mostly about positioning and, from this side, you'll have the wind at your back most frequently giving the upper hand. Other, faster, sloops are more eastern of the Interceptor you're all on. Those sloops are acting as the scouts, with a mix of magic and mayhem (explosives) to tell you where they are and sightings of these pirates.

For the last four days you've been been after one in particular, but they've been (maddeningly) staying one step ahead. But on that seventh day after leaving, the fourth day of tracking, you awake to hear the call.

"Sails sighted! Downwind, running half-sail!" You have them.

The rest of the day is a mix of hard labor and calls. Constant checks as the rifleman look over their implements and plans are made for the action. Hurry up and wait.

Just when it seemed like the ship was impossibly close, it started. The thunder of cannons booming below deck and launching their deadly payload toward the other Frigate.

"Increase height!" comes the call, "Ready on chain shot!" more calls. The battle is nearing.

The battle is nearing.

Amythyst is up on the main deck. She only has a pair of daggers on her and no bulky clothing. She's been mostly watching the battle as it nears, using her knowledge of the seas to assist as best she could....But she had been saving her spells for the battle.....

"Weeeeee!!!!!" Is heard, then well another "Weeeee!" again... Kae is soo not on the deck! Her voice is coming from much higher up! Anyone looking might see the hyperactive elf at the top of the mainmast, latched to said mast while giving the poor watchout a headache... Then again Kae's very good at spotting things at distance so maybe it's worth while? The happy shouting? Wel it's due to t he sweep of the mast above sealevel and whatnot..

As the two ships get closer, Kae tilts her head and hops on a sheet (aka one of the ropes) and begins sliding down to one of the spars, then she shimmies across grabs a ladder and works her way down from that too.. When she gets to the main-deck, the goofy Elf glances back toward the pirate ships and tilts her head "Wonder if anyone of them are folks I knew.. not that well privateering is that much difference. Kae is now humming a happy tune while she checks her death-ray, and then checks her pistol and bow.... "Laaa Laaa laaaaa..." She calls out then glances to the other ships curiously...

Kore has been spending the majority of her time aboard the ship meditating. The dimunitive Monk of Vardama moves only when she has a specific need and quickly returns to the berth where she's been quietly praying away her time. It's soon clear why that is. Kore is turning a bit geen in the gills she doesn't have. Being pale is not something that is really obvious on the gir's dark skin but even so people who are familiar iwth shipside operations might recognize the signs. Fortunately the Monk is in solid control of herself and nothing worse comes of it. When the alert goes out and it is time to prep for combat Kore finally emerges and heads up to the deck.

THOOM!

THOOM! THOOM!

THOOM! THOOM!

Cannons bark below deck back and forth, the zip of the cannon balls. They seem to almost move in a hideous slow motion before slamming into the wooden ships back and forth. Some hit high on the prow, skating off the hard angle before crashing through railing and off over head. The screams begin. The cries, with people looking for loved ones or family.

The death starts too.

Another fusillade of shots, the ships maneuvering for position. Trying to bring their cannon to bare without subjecting them to more damage. It's a deadly dance and both sides are skilled.

Amythyst says, "Captain?" she says to the officer on deck. "You do realize that they're outnumber your crew by 2 to 1, right?" She then takes a deep breath. "You may need to find an....advantage in this....""

The Captain looks toward Amythyst, a deep furrow. He stands proud above the deck, even with the splintering of wood around him. His hat is on perfectly, his uniform spotless.

Tall.

Proud.

Exactly the sort of person you want when fighting against the odds in a Naval battle. "Damn the odds, we have the advantage in wind and our tactics are perfect."

"Tack port, keep in his blindspots, lads!" The Captain calls out, looking down toward the deck, "Are you ready for a fight?! The man who brings me their flag gets two shares of rum the entire ride back!"

He slams his fist into the railing and starts moving about on his position above the deck. "Ready for action men! STARBOARD PREPARE TO FIRE!"

Amythyst is right however, the crew is outnumbered by possibly 2 to 1 odds. It will be a bloody fight.

Amythyst chuckles at the captain. "I have two friends below decks....call them up sooner, rather than later to help your crew." She then chuckles a bit. "I'm.....going to give you an advantage. Be ready." And she.....dives overboard.

Kae peers and watching the thing moes up to the Captain. "Recomend switching to grapeshot... rake their decks with grapeshot and their topsails with swivel gun and grapeshot. Keep peppering them, thin their numbers down." She says and rubs the back of her neck... "I'll start shooting at their rifle folks I guess...." She adds and glances around curiously "Also thinning out their crew will make manning their sails less efficient thus they won't be able to take better advantage of the wind." She adds and grins a bit. She then glances around to try and find a few spare rifles for her bit, then she shrugs and assembles her bow... "Here we go.." She says and knocks an arrow before trying to take potshots at their 'marines' and gunners up in the sales..

The ships are only a couple hundred feet apart now, but they're closely matched in speed. Kaelyn's advice is surely taken well, and there's nods as similar orders are being passed around. She called it right in time for it. The cannons continue, nearby a man with a rifle readying to shoot as they close into range takes several grapeshot pellets and falls over. He's crying out and clutching at where the red blossoms up.

"Make ready!" comes another call, telling the boarding parties that it's probably going to start soon.

Hurry up and wait.

The whistle of the lead and the crash of cannons.

Kore actually makes a good effort of throwing shuriken at the opposing riflemen. A few quick underhanded tosses of sharp knives to greet her enemies on her way back below decks. The tiny Mul'niessa seems more concerned with going below for the assault than anything else.

Amythyst didn't dive overboard to ditch the ship. In fact, she dives overboard to CATCH the other ship. Once she's there, she actually uses a spell to burn off part of the rudder, which give the ship they're a part of a distinct advantage in this battle. Once that's done, she swims her way back towards the ship and climbs her way up. "Their rudder's OUT captain....use this to your advantage!" She says as she tromps her way below decks. "Get ready for a fight....They've got a lot of men over on that ship." She says to Kore and Kaelyn.

GAME: Kaelyn casts True Strike. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15

Kae peers curiously up at the folks up in the sails on the other side, then tilts her head.. She attaches -something- to her bow, it kind of resembles a scope of sorts... The elf is about as calm now as anyone might see her. Maybe combat brings that out in her? Who knows... Kae knocks an arrow and draws it back, now sighting calmly at the lower level of the enemy ship? She takes a deep breath now and holds it "Buhbye..." Is all she says, before releasing the arrow. It's amazing how accurate she is, the arrow zips between deckmen, the captain and first mate, only to strike the helmsmen? It's a solid center mass shot, that shouldn't have been completely possible at this distance much less with folks running around on the other deck, yet still, there's the arrow, now stuck in the opposing ship's helmsman...

Kae knocks another arrow as the little artificed device seems to disolve and fall off the bow, before Kae sights down it and starts unleashing many more arrows, these going up into the sales and crows nest areas, looking to thin down the other ship's topsalesmen and 'snipers'.

The Captain looks toward Amythyst as she reports the destruction of the rudder, and then looks out toward the ship. He smiles, not a real smile, a half grim one. Warfare is bloody work, and this just gave the sugeon an extra sharpening on the blade. "Hard over Port! Full barrage!"

The order given, and the enemy ship starts trying to change course as well. The rudder has them slow and then - surprisingly - the enemy ship starts sailing straight. The Helmsman dead, it takes them a precious few seconds to recover. Seconds which give the Alexandrian Brig time to turn hard and bring her guns onto target.

Bloody work.

The noise below deck was deafening as the shot rang out. The arc true and hitting against the enemy ship with good accuracy and perfect ranging. The actions of those two adventurers along will clearly swing the favor in the Brig's favor.

"HARD STARBOARD! ANGLE FOR THE MIZZEN!"

Below decks though, where Kore is, she probably couldn't hear a word of it as there's only the ringing in her ears.

Kore gets belowdecks quickly and then takes a deep breath as she spends a second with her back to one of the walls. She closesh er eyes for a second and murmurs a prayer before looking around. A pause follows and then Kore shakes her head slowly, moving to join the boarding parties with careful steps. "Vardama... If you're listening. You told me to get on this godsforsaken boat..."

GAME: Kore rolls acrobatics: (12)+10: 22

Amythyst says, "Hopefully Vardama won't be calling for you. This is Rada's domain after all....and I owe him quite a bit after this. This is why I defend the seas. If people can't trade, then Rada will be.....very displeased...""

Kae is looking to get below decks! Yup, she's expended a large number of arrows and everything! The armored acranist goes down the stares, smiling to her self as she collapses her longbow... She puts that away, still walking, and one can always say, don't walk and rub yer belly or chew bubblegum at the same time right? She promptly faceplants as she steps on a cannonball and her feet go flying out from underneath her.. She lays there, muttering "Itai...." Some wierd language, but it all makes sense as she's on her face arms and legs spread slightly and all... Good thing she's got armor!

And Wait... And Wait....

A breath that lasts an eternity. The fighting doesn't stop, the noises never end, it's just a bit more muffled down here. Muffled all except for the people getting ready, fidgeting. The stench of fear and then the call of officers.

"Remember your training. Watch eachothers backs. Look for the blue hand on the shoulder." Slaps to the backs, quiet words, and Kore is not the only one to be praying. Languages, fear, words of prayer. It builds with anticipation.

"Oh Gods... Oh Gods....!" One of the men starts, and that one is hit hard with a fist to the back.

"Shut it, just like the exercise. Stay close! We'll get through this brothers." The hard grip of the hand on that tense shoulder, "Breathe. Keep breathing."

Time passes, out the gunnery ports wood can be seen instead of water. Any second.

Any second.

"FIRE!" comes the yell, and the blast happens again, several of the canons angling to burst through the enemy hull and the ramp is lowered. Yells, shouts, and the rush of people as with a CRASH! The ships collide and its time for the butcher's work.

Shouts can be heard above, more planks thrown, the sound of shooting and arrows. bodies falling over the side of the ship.

As you watch one of the men falls off the boarding plank and is promptly crushed between the two ships. Kaelyn nearly follows suit, but the armor only compressed hard. Her quick reflexes saving her from the majority of the damage.

It's with that hard push, that you find yourself on the enemy ship. Sailors all around you engaged in close quarter fighting, the screams starting again.

Kore steps through onto the opposing vessel then immediately moves off to the side, her heart pounding as she surveys her foes. There's no fear here -at least, not of the opposing force. here below the decks Kore is a far more collected individual, but she can't help the adrenaline pumping through her veins alongside her blood. It mgith be that which explains why her first shuriken goes wide, slamming into the wal lbehind the nearest of the enemy silors. The second buries itself into his gut, rewarded with a splatter of blood and a groan. Not quite enough. As tiny as the half-Mul is it takes the man a split second to realize who attacked him. The fighting is intense as it erupts with sailors on both sides attacking. The clatter of steel starts to take over. The one that Kore attacks lunges out with a blow but it misses, another following it up, and then a spear. The Mul is just too agile for them, and they all miss.

Kaelyn is not as lucky, the two sailors lay into her, one with a dagger and the other a vicious looking sword. Thankfully the spear misses her as the officer jabs out at her. She doesn't look all that great right now.

Amythyst near the rear though feels the flow of battle, and while she's not in any danger of being attacked, the press of bodies is getting a bit difficult.

Someone might actually think she's harmless. At least until they launch their assaults and then she simply- isn't there. The first sword is blocked with a forearm, out right, like something out of a story book. The bracer there stops the blade easily and then its owner is dropped with a firm punch to the solar plexus.. The fighting continues with sailors on both sides dying. The hit from Kore knocks one of them out, a mercy in comparison to what's going on around the party. The press of bodies again, the shove and a few of your side fall out of the breached hole in the hull. Yelling out before the boats rock back together and there's a crunching noise as another life was lost to just the surroundings.

The enemy sailors seem emboldened in a way, not in a magical sense, just as if there's a reason for them to fight harder and a cheer is rising up as calls come forward about how the deck battle is in their favor. Could just be moral boosting though.

The two sailors attacking Kaelyn pursue her further, lashing out, though both of them missing. The Officer however hauls back and launches his spear in Amythyst's direction, it slams into a sailor next to her and sending him tumbling out of the hole. He's reaching for another spear.

The others attacking Kore don't let up, slashing of a sword and the stabbing of spear as they all try to kill the Mul in front of them with one of the three now dead for all they know - they didn't realize he was simply knocked out.

The majority of the sailors all look to be in ragged clothing, not rags, just not pristine and clean looking. Nothing like the naval ship you've been on, with the exception of the two enemy officers. Both of them wear petticoats of a deep maroon over white.

Kae pants now, coughing raggedly after taking that hit. It drops her fully to her knees. She then takes another ragged breath and brings one leg up. Resting an elbow on that leg to better stabilize hers self as she sights with her ray-gun again... More ragged breathing and another cough, and she takes a deep breath again. She squints, sighting through the weapon's scope and looking down well the barrel that just deposited a round into her... Well over the top anyway.

A bit or recognition goes through the Captain's face at this point. The slight smile he had fades to a look of horror, but he doesn't have time to turn or find cover. NOpe, Kae pulls the trigger on her death-ray and a bolt of raw energy blasts out of the long, slender weapon. The bolt zooms over the top of the Captain's pistol, over his hand, striking him right between the eyes... There's a dull zorching sound, and well, the captain is missing his noggin. Really it's not terribly bloody as the energy basically renders ash his head as it is simply not there, and the now decapitated body falls to the ship's deck...

Kae exhails and takes another ragged breath, her hand going to her side.

Timestop by Bolide has left.

With the death of the Captain, the remaining sailors quickly start to back down. Surrendering or dying where they stand, it's not much longer until the ship is taken. The casualties were severe with the Alexandrian ship losing nearly half her crew, but the Frigate suffered more so with a lot of them lost in the battle after before it became clear that the prisoners were to be taken.

All around you the call starts to build, the afterglow as its obvious you have won this day. Cheers for the Captain. Cheers for the crew. And mourning for the loss of life.

The remaining 40 some odd enemy crew are rounded up, bound, and secured - half on each ship. The brig will make a fine prize for the Alexandrian Navy, even if it has to limp back to port for repairs.

GAME: Kaelyn used a Wand of cure light wounds.

Walking over to Kaelyn, Amythyst unstoppers her potion flask and dump a cure potion directly onto Kaelyn's side. "Rada favors you this day, Kaelyn. Rada's favor is fickle, but he favors you this day."

Kae peers curiously and shrugs as she tugs a small rod from her pocket, this looking rather mechanical in nature and well she taps her self on the forehead with it, causing those wounds to close up further... She peers where the captain was and then gets to her feet... She then grins and nods to Amythyst "Thankies... " She says and looks to where teh captain was again. "Can I call dibs on the hand cannon he had?"

Kore emerges from the captain's chambers with a stack of papers, a Captain's coat, and a fancy looking tricorner hat. She carries all of this fairly easily despite being nearly outmassed by the clothing. "I'm not sure there's a great deal else to find, unfortunately," the elf admits after a moment. "But it seems to be worth a shot."

GAME: Amythyst rolls 1d20+2+2: (18)+2+2: 22

Amythyst stops Kore as she comes back to the ship. "Hand the captain's hat and coat to me please." She says softly. "The ship was Charnese.....and I don't want you getting too involved with this. From what this looks like...it's going to be the start of another war. And.....if anyone should be blamed for this soft of thing, Kore. It's going to be me......I'm the reason Charnese nobles went ballistic when I sank a ship in their port. They just don't know my name or what I look like......but I'm the one who sank the ship when I cut it's keel in half. the same way I cut this ship's rudder."

Kae blinks curiously as she looks to Amythist and then Kore curiously.... "Umm best thing to do is simply toss the hat and jacket overboard... Also as far as the ship goes? If yer gonna keep it, sell it to a privateer group, or another pirate group.... That way things are safer and whatnot... Can hand the crew over to another group of privateers and whatnot, they can be impressed into service on board another vessel and probably be better off for it." She says... Seems the Odd Elf knows a bit about piracy, or privateering or both...

"Nonsense." The Captain says to Amythyst as he hears what she says. Of course he then stops Kore too, "Wait, hold a moment Ms. Kore." He says, and then reaches out to pluck the rather official document from her stack... a pause, then a grab of another one.

"Thank you." The Captain says, he looks back toward some of those onboard the ship. "Mister Trenchent." He says to one of the Senior officers, "I need you to make ready with all do haste, we are headed back to port. You are Captain of this ship. Do right by her but do not dally."

A turn back toward the adventurers and he holds up both papers. "This one is the official writ for this ship, declaring it the Charnese Naval Vessel Revenant. This frigate is part of their Navy, and this-" he holds up the second, "-is their orders to disrupt trade. Ladies," He turns and starts back toward the brig, "We have just witnessed the first shot of the war. Be ready to set sail!"

"We are taking it back, Ms. Kaelyn, to be used in the service to Alexandria."

Amythyst looks over to the captain and sighs. "Rada will not be pleased with what Charn is doing. Give me a call whenever you need me against Charn. Their efforts will be disrupted. Even if it means sinking all of their ships...."

Kae oooh's and nods "Well there ya go, keep the shipl use it for future fights and stuff... I might suggest something though, if you wanna reaaaaaaaaally mess with the Charn when you take it back at em.. Copper sheeting around the gun wells... Helps prevent fires and gives you a bit more resistance to impacts from cannoballs...." she adds and grins a bit.. Then oooh's "More internal support and ribbing too.. Yer gonna need to do an extensive refit anyway, also you can do with less heavy decks, more open spaces and so forth." Yus Kae's starting to analyze the ship in detail..
