Last time you responded to a Call to Adventure by a Gobber by the name of Styx. You journeyed through the mysterious darkness thats probably nothing in their basement and headed out into the wilds. After some exploration you sighted your quarry, dubbed a 'Wolf Spider' by styx. You are currently in a large clearing around a lagoon and have found a hidden entrance to a large cave.

The current location of the quarry is unknown, but it cant be far away

Aside from the large tunnel this area has trails leading off to the West and the South, the Western trail heading towards a sort of crossroads and the Southern trail leading back to the edge of the Forrest

"Wot?" Baz peers. "Dis spider es in dis cave? Wot we wait'n for? Lets go in there and eat it!" He pulls his blade from his back and swings the massive curved sword experimentally. "I brought some o' that black sauce from the food place in town. We'll fry it up on a fire and then eats it wit sauce toot-sweet. Finger lick'n good."

"Thats the spirit!" Styx grins "finding out what it tastes like is very important and I commend your adventurous pallet! Would you mind taking notes of your experiance? For posterity?"

Havelock eyes Baz "It is uncertain. However it may be prudent to explore the cave. Keep clear of the lake, something else lurks in the water." he notes as a warning.

GAME: Lanier rolls Knowledge/Nature: (13)+10: 23

Deak remarks, "Last time I heard someone asked to take notes for posterity, it ended up with the sound of ultimate suffering."

The large Ork nods his head pleased with himself. "Sure, I can tell you how it tasted and crunched." There's a pause as Havelock mentions the lake and those Orkish beady eyes turn towards it. "We could eat that too. I was tole' by dis Althean priest that fish is good for yer digestion." Baz hefts his blade against his armored shoulder. "I've had some ultimoat suffern 'afore. Ate dis demon over in Skund, it wasn't one o'the chatty ones so I figured it was awright. Spent da next two days leaving a trail anyone could follow. Bare ass through the mountains."

Lanier looks down towards his mighty wolf companion, Spud, and raises an eyebrow as da Orc speaks. He seems to study the wolf before he simply shrugs his shoulders, "We've had worse." He looks towards Baz, "Fried spider with a sweet black sauce, you say? I'll cook." The left side of his lip curls up into a whistful smile before he looks to regard the cave, his lips thinning, "This cave was made by something very intelligent. Look at the cave mouth. It's covered with a matting, and has some form of viscuous saliva holding it together." He then shakes his head, "And it doesn't look like it was dug with tools. It's made by nature, or something of nature. Whatever is in there is sure to have very powerful claws or mandibles if it was able to create this." He tilts his head forward, offering a prayer to the Lord of the Beasts before he lifts his head once again, "Who goes first?"

<OOC> Deak would like to cast Detect Magic and concentrate in the cave for a few rounds.

GAME: Deak casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 4 DC: 13

Deak casts his spell, then gazes into the cave for a bit, then says, "There's some faint illusion magic in there."

<OOC> Grush says, "Also Sorry, i had misremembered the rules for detect magic. The proper information you should have from 3 rounds of concentration is: You can detect 3 faint auras of Illusion in the range of the spell, they appear to be centered in spots on the walls of the tunnel"

"I don't remember any spiders cast'n magic." Lumbering forward the big Ork goes to investigate. "I may aswell go first. All o yas can gather some wood for when I bring out dis spell cast'n spidah." Stomp-Stomp go the big armored boots as the green skin makes his way within the cave.

<OOC> Grush says, "dont stress, you have Darkvision. Ah, okay, maybe stress a little"

The tunnel leads down into a large, dark cavern, only a small amount of light filtering down from tiny holes in the roof. The atmosphere is palatably thick, heavy with the stench and sticky warmth of the decomposing plant matter that carpets the floor about knee deep.

Charlotte is....keeping close to the one with light....if there is anyone...

Hanging in the centre of the cave, suspended by some sort of thick, gooey strands, is a large sack, it seems to be constructed out of animal skins, somehow pasted together. More of these strands are scattered, seemingly randomly around the cave, attached to the roof and walls.

<OOC> Baz da Ork should warn everyone he has the flaw "No common sense" and this trap is about as perfect an example of it's use as possible.

As Baz moves into the area he walks straight into one of the hanging strands, slapping wetly to his face and sticking tightly

In the distance you all hear a loud roar, it sounds like a bunch of chalkboard and fingernails being put through a blender and makes you involuntarily wince, the hairs on the back of your neck standing up

<OOC> Grush says, "Yes, go ahead, but youll need to make a reflex save not to get caught as well"

<OOC> Grush says, "Nice work, go ahead and cut the poor lump free"

Deak says, "Ugh, that sounded awful. I'm going to invoke some light. See what we're dealing with." He casts another spell, illuminating the blade of his bill.

<OOC> Grush says, "also, Baz and Lanier, and anyone else that enters, you can make a Knowledge Nature check to have a look at that big ol sack if you like"

Charlotte says, "Yeah it did. And I don't like the sound of it either...."

<OOC> Deak headed in, but after the advanced scouts, and with his light on. Hasn't got Know/Nature.

Havelock follows along carefully, long metal bow in hand. "Has the source of the noise been determined? I suspect some form of ambush." he says without inflection in his artificial voice.

Lanier turns his head, his eyes following Baz as he approaches the cave, "You haven't lived until an eight-legged malevolent creature blasts you in the face." He then raises an eyebrow, "Sticky saliva..." He shakes his head as the Orc gets stick, and falls into line behind the Orc. With deft hands, Lanier removes a handaxe from his belt. As he approaches the orc, he reaches up and hacks, freeing his companion for this journey from the sticky stuff. He then looks back, "Everyone be careful not to touch the --" At the sound of the roar, Lanier's eyes go wide, and he looks over his shoulder, "Uh, just be careful." He looks towards Baz, nodding his head and returning the axe to his belt. He unshoulders a composite longbow, pulling an arrow from his quiver at his belt to nock, "Come on, Spud." He enters the cave a moment later, his eyes drawn up to the sack. He raises an eyebrow for a moment, then points up, "Cacoon. Something is in there..." He then advances forward, his eyes locked on the way ahead.

Styx follows you slowly, carefull not to snag her long rifle on the strands. You can practically see the Gold Pieces appear in her eyes as Lanier says 'cacoon'

"Hey, dis stuff makes noise!" Baz remarks as he points at the strand stuck to his face. Then there's a roar and he brings up his sword into a fighting stance. Pausing to nod slowly to Lanier for cutting the strand free. "Thanks." Then he grins to the group in toto. "That bag looks like it could be fun aye?" Lumbering along after Lanier the Ork tightens his fingers on his giant blade. "I wunner if dis web stuff burns well? We could clear some of this crap out o here with one of my torches aye?"

Havelock pulls out a long metalic looking arrow and notches it to the string. "Pattern analysis seems to indicate that we are looking at a spider web with a cocoon at the center. There is a high chance that have stumbled in the spider wolf lair." he says matter of fact. "It is advised that everyone cease making physical contact with the spider web material."

Deak, over by the wall of the cavern, apparently distracted by something, accidentally steps back into one of the strands, sticking fast.

<OOC> Grush says, "Deak, make a fort save"

You booted your frozen connections.

You all hear another roar, much closer this time

Deak says, "Hey, these 'flowers' aren't, guys. In fact, don't even... Crap! I'm stuck, and this stuff is icky wet."

At the next roar, Lanier looks ahead with a squint, "Anyone have some Universal Solvent?" He then adds, "Fighters, form a line. Archers at the ready. This thing is aware of our presence. Don't range too far ahead." He then looks over towards his wolf, "Spud, ready up." At the command, the wolf tenses, eyes looking towards the source of the roar.

Charlotte says, "Cut him free." She says softly. "I'd rather not leave him behind, Lanier." She then glances at Deak. "if you must, use his polearm...""

<OOC> Grush says, "Also, if you're forming up let me know whos where. The cave is essentially a very long oval, you came in from one 'point' and the cacoon is in the centre."

"'Bout time" Baz says with a hearty laugh. He bangs his curved blade across his chest as he moves to get some swinging room and steady himself frontline style. "Lets see wut you got Gob-shite!" With a deep inhale of breath the Ork spreads his arms and ROARS back towards the noise in the distance. Then laughing again he intones a quick prayer to Kor. "Once more, conflict, blood, I test my strength for you Kor! See me battle! Hear me struggle. For Kor! For Kor! Master of War!"

Dubtle is totally here! Has totally been here the whole time, though quiet. He's got his staff. He's gotr his raven. Totally been here.

<OOC> Deak says, "Can I cast Bless right before combat starts?"

Havelock knocks an arrow but lets the much larger Baz stand in front of him, ready to loose on anything coming into the cave.

<OOC> Deak is happy to hang back and shield an arcanist with his body. ;)

GAME: Lanier rolls 1d20+Ranged: (10)+8: 18

Lanier shakes his head, "Surely not." He looks towards Charlotte with a shade of a grin, "I assure you he's foremost on my mind." He then goes on to explain as he pulls on the arrow to test the strength of his bow, "Universal solvent should free... A line of defense will keep him and us from getting eaten alive as we free him." He then grins, "

<OOC> Lanier says, "Oops!"

<OOC> Charlotte says, "no you can't Deak."

<OOC> Charlotte is one of the leads.

Lanier shakes his head, "Surely not." He looks towards Charlotte with a shade of a grin, "I assure you he's foremost on my mind." He then goes on to explain as he pulls on the arrow to test the strength of his bow, "Universal solvent should free anyone of the saliva on the vines. A line of defense will keep him and us from getting eaten alive as we free him." He then looks across the cave, and secures the arrow with his forefinger as he draws an axe. He turns, flipping it in his hand to catch it by the haft and swing it over his head. With a powerful throw, he sends it sailing towards the captured form of Deak. Thankfully, the axe flies high and completely bisects the vine holding on to him. He breaths a sigh and then looks back towards Charlotte, shrugging, "See? Foremost on my mind..."

<OOC> Lanier says, "Hrm. Further information just came in. Swap the word vines with gooey strands of spider snot. I'd bathe soon, Daek... Just saying."

There is a loud crash and light streams into the cave as something comes crashing through the other end of the cave

Charlotte says, "I figured." She then keeps an eye out as best she can. "I can't see much past the light. Not like some of you other guys and gals...."

Charlotte says, "and....that would be trouble...."

<OOC> Deak will stand under the next available waterfall.

Deak whistles in impressed reaction to the ranger's prowess. He says, "Nice throwing." Then he falls into line toward the back.

The huge creature almost resembles a giant wolf. Almost.

Its body is covered with what looks like armor plating made of bone, patches of very thick, coarse, black hair sprouting up between them. It has six legs, nimbly supporting its weight and making it move with a disturbing fluidity, as if it was gliding along.

Its head looks like a canid skull, with gleaming black eyes set in a ringed crown around its head. \Itӳ lower jaw splits down the middle, hanging open slightly to reveal rows of razor sharp teeth. A bluish, mucous-like substance drools out of the bottom of its mouth in viscous strands.

It stands about 12ft high at the shoulder and 30ft from nose to tail.

<OOC> Lanier raises a hand, "It's fugly. Can I shoot it in the face?"

It throws back its head and roars, the horific sound drilling down into your bones

<OOC> Grush says, "You possibly can, but everyone needs to roll a fortsave first"

<OOC> Lanier says, "Is this a fear effect at all?"

As the roar of the creature blasts through the cave, and Lanier feels it right to his bones, he spasms reflexsively as it causes instant cramping throughout his body. Even Spud yelps, though it is not heard over the roar. Lowering his bow, and releasting the string, Lanier reaches up to grasp the hilt of the blade on the back of his shoulder. He tilts his head forward, and whispers through the roar, "Gilead, Lord of the Beasts, leaden the blade that hunts the flesh."

<OOC> Lanier says, "Yup! Good enough for me. :)"

Despite her instincts telling her to run, Charlotte stays....and even draws her rapier. "This is going to be fun...."

GAME: Dubtle casts Enlarge Person. Caster Level: 4 DC: 15

<OOC> Dubtle says, "Baz, next round on my turn, you will become LARGE."

<OOC> Baz da Ork says, "We're in a cave?"

<OOC> Dubtle /thinks/ you should be able to fit still

<OOC> Dubtle says, "Unless I am wrong about the scale? :)"

<OOC> Lanier says, "The cave is 12 feet hihg."

<OOC> Lanier says, "I think if Baz doesn't get too acrobatic... :) What do you think Grush?"

<OOC> Grush says, "there is MORE than enough room, the cave is about 15 feet high"

<OOC> Grush says, "you might not be able to jump but you can move around. Going to be harder to avoid the sticky strands though"

<OOC> Dubtle is mostly looking at giving him buffs. :D

<OOC> As Enlarge is cast on Baz. The Ork begins growing to immense proportions, soon pushing all the other characters into webs and the stone wall. As the entire party is slowly suffocated and feels their bones crushed against the seemingly endless plethora of Ork ass. Spreading, crushing, destroying and finally releasing the most hesitant of dying farts. One voice can be heard wheezing before it to finally gives in. "I... Thought... Cave was... Bigger."

"You, Oruch, stay close for a moment. Don't go rushing off!"

Dubtle's hands are weaving magical sigils in the air as he speaks to him. He begins to speak, and honest ly, it sounds a little like he's talking backwards. But there's at least the word 'Navos' in there somewhere.

So that works.

Baz's form is starting to grow.

The Wolf Spider lets out a loud snarl and rushes forwards, flowly smoothly between the hanging strands. It rears up slightly on its back four legs and swipes down at Baz with raking talons, missing with both. It's black eyes almost seem to be expressing surprise as Baz moves

Deak, smiles as he calls upon the blessing of Althea. He puts his hand on the enameled blue rose on his polished breastplate and speaks the words of his prayer.

<OOC> Grush says, "All good, its got some damage resistance but you've still dealt it a solid blow"

<OOC> Grush says, "Go ahead and pose it"

"Ehh." Baz has a moment of an unusual feeling, fear, at the roar of the massive spider as it charges into the area. He takes a step back sweat starting on his skin. Then he feels magic flowing through him and he's growing larger and larger. "AWW RIGHT!" He intones from his now massive chest, his giant blade wooshing through the air. It comes up cliping the spider's strikes wide. Then with a slow spin and downard arc he drives the huge blade into the creature's hide. "Yeah, hows you like that one? I'm gonna eat ya, ya big walk'n dinner meat. Eat ya!" He exclaims a few globs of spit flying from his giant mouth into the creature's many eyes. As he tries to keep it's attention solely on him in the front line.

The Wolf Spider lets out a teeth rattling howl as Baz strikes it. Its jaw open wide and a long, red, snake-like tongue shoots out of its mouth, wrapping around Bazs neck, the tiny fanged mouth on the end biting into his flesh. With a yank of its head it sweeps Baz off his feet and starts backing up, dragging him away from the group, it's many eyes watching the rest of the party closely, snarling threateningly

<OOC> Grush says, "Yes it is!, Its managed to drag Baz about 30ft away"

<OOC> Grush says, "You can move through the area it moved so you wont have to worry about stick strands"

The Ork stumbles under the frenzied assault of the Wolf Spider, Baz starts to yowl in pain at the slashes and bites. Then begins to tense and slow, his blade doesn't return from it's hefted slash and the now massive Ork seems to take on a more statuesque quality. His joints and muscles locking into place as he succumbs to the paralytic venom

It is now Charlotte's turn! Dubtle is next!

As Baz is dragged away, Lanier opens a hand to release the bow to allow it to fall to the ground. At the same time, he reaches behind his head with his opposite hand to grasp the hilt of his greatsword. With a twist, he tears it away from the leather clasps holding the massive weapon to his back and hefts it around into a two-handed grip. He brings the point just below eye-level, pointing towards the spider as he growls, "Spud, get it." As the wolf leaps, the ranger mirrors the attack. Spud gets there slightly quicker thanks to two legs, and the companion snarls as he attempts to take a bite out of the spider, finding mostly air. Lanier experiences a slightly different result as he jumps the last few feet of his charge and brings the sword around, up, and deep into the flesh of the wolf spider.

The Wolf Spider yowls in pain, its tongue releasing Baz and snapping back into its mouth as it turns to face Lanier

There is a groan from the Ork as he's healed, and it seems a few fingers twitch and a leg shakes slowly. Perhaps the poison's effects are beginning to fade. Otherwise however he's by far the largest green body pillow in the room at the moment.

Deak jogs along after the spiders and calls out, "Oh, Lady of Compassion, heal Thou the wounds of this noble warrior." Then he touches Baz.

The Wolf Spider appears to be in considerable pain, its gait much less smooth, one of it's legs seems badly injured. it cocks its head at Baz as he begin to EXPAND, then looks over at Dubtle, now standing alone. Letting out a short bark at the others it charges towards Dubtle

Lanier At the spider's parting shot, Lanier is struck and seems to pause, consider what is going on internally. He grits his teeth, pressing forward after the spider, but his legs seem to be moving as if he's wearing metal boots, "Poison."

The Wolf Spider looks almost offended as Deak sprints at it, lashing its tounge out at him, following it with its main jaws. The tongue deflects off his breastplate, giving him enough time to move out of the way of its bite. It growls in fustration and continues trying to drag Dubtle away

Charlotte keeps pace after the spider, but when it stands too still, she pounces. Charlotte manages to plunge her blade deep into the beast's abdomen......and twists the blade.....

Lanier grunts, his head hung low as he struggles to regain movement in his arms, legs, and torso. With tremendous effort, Lanier leans forward into a run, bringing his sword into a two-handed grip at his side. With a planted foot and a powerful swing, the ranger lashes out towards the Spider only to have the blade fly wide.

The Wolf Spider lets out a roar of pain, with none of the terrifying impact of before, trailing off into a whimper. It drops Dubtle and jumps back, away from its attackers, then runs around, back over to the cacoon, with a swipe of its claws it severs the strands holding it. With a hacking cough it vomits some of the viscous liquid onto the cacoon before rolling it onto its back, the gooey substance holding it there.

Charlotte runs forward as she sees the spider is trying to run. With a final stab and twist, the spider doesn't move again. "Yeah. I'd rather not have it running off with the coccoon...." She sighs a bit. "Hope the guy doesn't mind a body, instead of a live one."

The Wolf Spider lets out a hiss, it's tongue lolling out as it tries to snap at Charlotte, its legs buckling underneath it.

You say, "You did it!" Styx cheers "Good work, I'll be right back with the tools!" She dashes out of the cave"

Charlotte withdraws her blade and sighs a bit....wiping it off. "What's in the coccoon?" She says as she looks to the others. "Help me out?"

Deak sighs in relief, then goes to the cocoon, "Let's cut it open."

After the most recent miss by the Gilean ranger, Lanier drops to a knee to catch his breath and try to work through some of the trauma received throughout the fight. He looks up, narrowing his eyes until he spots Spud. With a whistle that catches the ear of the wolf, Lanier motions him over. Upon arrival, he reaches out to rub a hand along the wolf's head, "He didn't get ya, did he? Good old wolf."

Dubtle is still paralyzed, it seems. He twitches a little. That's about iut.

A lot squeak comes from him.

Charlotte uses her rapier to gently cut the cocoon open. "Deak? Can you see to Dubtle?"

As Charlotte slices open the cocoon it begins to wriggle and squirm, chirping yaps and grunts coming from it as dozens of tiny Wolf Spiders, about the size of a cat, start spilling out of the cocoon, most of them immediatly start running, but some of them jump at Charlotte, attempting to bite and scratch at her legs, their tiny tonges snapping out, unable to penetrate her clothing

Deak agrees, "Not sure what I can do about paralysis, but I'll do what I can." He attempts first aid.

the babies snap at you as they run past but they don't seem to be particularly dangerous, and more concerned with escaping

Pushing himself up to his feet, Lanier moves towards Deak and Dubtle, dropping to a knee as he gets next to the arcanist. Looking up stoically towards the Cleric, Lanier states simply, "I have a healer's kit."

Charlotte takes a breath and sighs. "welp....we killed their mother. How nice." She says as she sheathes her rapier. "And here I thought I was helping someone ou.

Dubtle eventually does recover, thanks to the help of the others, and he looksa t Charlotte. "IT NEARLY ATE ME, YOU KNOW," he adds. "IT WAS A GIANT SPIDER."

The babies have scattered by the time Styx returns with the giantborn driver and begins the Gorey process of carving up the Wolf Spiders huge corpse
