  • Title: Hills Have Eyes
  • Emitter: Zyla
  • Characters: Jokul 4, Raniq 2, Aya 4, Alakton 5, Eden 4, James 4
  • Place: Alexandria - Tad Norgorn's Haunted Caverns
  • Time: April 13, 2016
  • Summary: Hired by the Guild of Adventurers, to help villagers who have had people go missing.
  • APL: 5
  • Encounter 1: 7 CR 1 Giant Spiders (CR 7)

A village on the edge of Alexandrian territory has called for help. It seems that villagers have gone missing in a nearby wood and anyone who goes looking for them doesn't come back either. They need someone to look into it and the Adventurer's Guild has called you all together. You were given directions to the village and a wagon to use to get there. Once in the village, the elders explained what was going on, that people have been going missing, they wander into the nearby wood, which is about an hour's journey from the village and never come back. THis has them really worried of course and thank you all for coming. THey do feed you as they explain the situation. Then take you to the edge of the village and point towards the wood, which you can see in the distance.

<OOC> James says, "I have Arcana, History, Nature, The Planes, Geography, Local, And REligion knowledges. Any I can apply for some background here?"

"Probably got lost! Village people shouldn't go wandering about in the woods. All manner of things in there..." Eden begins. "Bears," She offers, "Hags," She continues, her lips pursing as she struggles to think of something else they might find in there.

"Berries!"

Damnable berries, they'll always get you.

"You know, I know I've been suggesting this a lot lately, but if you were to light it on fire," The hell is wrong with her? "You could find them very easily. The forest goes through periods of renewal, you see, very natural that things..." She trails off, already walking toward it, her elk trotting along behind her, her voice drifting, perhaps mercifully, as she gains distance.

<OOC> Zyla says, "well since all you know is that people are missing and no one comes back with any information, not really at this point, too many possibilities."

Raniq asks the rest of the party, "Any of you decent trackers?"

James reluctantly takes a ride with the others on the wagon. Ground travel is so... wrong somehow. "I've been told recently about demon possessions. It could be anything. We likely just have to go in there and see what's there." he trills after they get their briefing, and he helps himself to a small meal of some offered meat.

"I don't think they want to set their forest on fire, I'm afraid, Eden. But that's okay. We'll go figure out what it is, and be back in home for supper. They've got stew and dumplings for supper." The Cavalier audiably smacks his lips in thought of it, even after eating at the village, as they're led to the edge of the village, and he slaps down the front of his helm. His lance is left where it is, as the Cavalier hauls a greatsword onto his shoulder. "When we get in there, I'm sure that Gravemoss and Siege here," He pats the side of a Griffon, that gives a squawk and glares around itself for a moment, apparently having went into a little doze a second ago. "Should be able to pick up any tracks."

Raniq says, "If it would help, my little ermine friend here is really clever at catching scents." He pats the ermine on his shoulders.

"Light it on fire," Jokul repeats, with an utterly blank stare given to Eden. "You... want to light the whole forest on fire. And you don't see a problem with thi-OI!" Aaaaand she's walking away, and he's left staring momentarily at her back instead. "...*Why*..." He sighs, quiety, more to himself than anyone else.

The forest looms in the distance. If it is an hour away, it must be good sized, cause it looks rather large from here.

"I wonder if the villagers contemplated setting the forest afire," Aya wonders softly though aloud, "and they were never seen again..." She exhales a breath as she considers. "They may have simply tripped in the dark, and fallen to their deaths. Survival of the fittest at work." Her eyes move to the forest. "In any case, we have a job to do." She begins walking for the looming dark woods.

<OOC> Raniq assumes that there is a more-or-less well trodden path from village into forest. Yes?

Eden just keeps on keepin' on toward the forest, humming a chipper song along the way, her stride long and quick.

<OOC> Zyla says, "yep"

Alakton keeps pace up with the others, apparently deciding that walking is better than just straight up riding into the wounds, considering the fact that his mount is a large grumpy Griffon.

Raniq continues following the path, keeping his senses alert (as does his familiar). James is perfectly fine with 'walking', which for him is a mixture of walking and using his wings. "It wouldn't hurt us if a tracker did try to find any signs of where people have walked. Otherwise we'll have to try to attract attention to bring out whatever is giving problems."

<OOC> Jokul could try rolling Survival for that <.< <OOC> Raniq supposes we all could try. <OOC> James says, "those of us with survival anyway :)"

You can make good time to get to the forest, you see the edges of the forest. You can see very easily where others headed towards the forest, some tracks fresh, some older.

<OOC> Alakton says, "Mine and Eden's pets have scent and the track trick. They don't have tricks set up on +sheet/comp yet, but they both have combat training + track" <OOC> Raniq says, "It's not a Trained Only type skill. Just uses Wisdom modifier." <OOC> Alakton says, "So, Zyla: How are we gonna do the tracking. Everyone throw in a survival roll as a group effort or?" <OOC> Zyla says, "you can pick someone to roll and others can roll to aid, or all can roll, up to you." <OOC> Aya believes you can also use Perception to notice tracks, up to a certain difficulty. GAME: You nominated Josselyn for good roleplay.

Raniq, arriving at edge of trees, states the obvious, "Well, they seems to at least make it here. Maybe we should stop and look around a bit."

James spends his time listening to the others in the group, following along, trying to be mindful of his surroundings. Studying the geography, the plants, animals, everything, as they travel to the forest and plan their strategy.

<OOC> Alakton says, "Are we able to use Aid Another to give a +2 bonus to give the bonus?" <OOC> Zyla says, "yes." <OOC> Alakton says, "To the survival roll, I mean." <OOC> Zyla says, "yes"

Coming to a stop near the edge of the woods, Alakton sniffs once before giving a grunt. He lifts up the front of his helm, locking it in place before looking at the group. "Alright. Besides myself, the Griffon, and Gravemoss, who here can actually track something." There's a pause, "Otherwise I'm tempted to go with Eden's idea that we burn the forest." He might be joking. Maybe.

Raniq says, "not me.""

Eden turns excitedly toward the sound of Alakton's potential agreement, an everburning torch in her hand, as though by magic. She stands ready. Gravemoss, for his part, is already sniffing about curiously.

James slowly shakes his head. "I am trained and practiced at being observant, but not specifically for hunting animal on the ground. Well, an animal or anything else."

<OOC> Eden will roll for aid other, but expects little. GAME: Eden rolls survival: (17)+3: 20 <OOC> James says, "can I roll that on base wisdom bonus?" <OOC> Eden says, "Roll survival to aid other." <OOC> Zyla says, "think have to have it...not sure." Rofl." <OOC> Zyla says, "you are still fine, you can see where most of the tracks go into the forest, it looks like a game trail."

Raniq says, "Looks like this way." pointing.

Alakton, with the assistance of damn near everyone, even considering the fact that he almost falls over once staring at a track as Siege comes bumping into him, manages to find what appears to be a game trail. With a audiable 'AHA', that sounds as if he's about to go charging off, he takes off on a slight jog, griffon on his tail. "This way, I believe."

<OOC> James says, "Okay I'm running home. Back in ~45 min, apologies. Will follow along quietly with the group. I'll let whoever proxy for me if need be." <OOC> Zyla says, "k"

You are able to follow the tracks, they follow a game trail, leading deeper into the forest, the trees seem to get a bit thicker as you get deeper.

Raniq happily follows Alakton.

For once, Jokul actually decided to *trust* Alakton, since he actually seemed like he knew what he was doing. For once. Cue a facepalm that echoes through the forests when the cavalier nearly faceplants on the ground. AT LEAST he eventually comes up with something... only to let out that very FAMILIAR KIND OF SOUND. "NO DON--!!" Jokul starts, but immediately calmsd own when Alakton, thankfully, just takes it to a jog instead. He even lets out an audible sigh of relief.

Aya is not a skilled tracker. She may not even qualify as an unskilled tracker. Ergo, when others seem to discover clues, with shrieks of "Ah-hah!" she follows. She does spare eyes for Eden and her torch, however. "Please put that away before you get hurt."

"Whenever you are ready, my small-beared friend," Eden lifts her torch, striding alongside him with an easy pace, keeping up with the others, bright eyes flicking over this track or another, skills acquired only from living a lifetime in the woods far from here.

Gravemoss frolics on like the great hulking window-licker he is, bounding along the trail, not all there.

He's a special creature.

He stops dead at one point, head tossing back in order to bugle forth some ear-piercing whistle of a thing that might indicate that he's found something.

...But, he hasn't.

"My beard isn't small!" Insists Jokul.

But it absolutely is. It really, really is.

Alakton's jog is a constant thing - apparently the man is pretty spry in all that plate - although considering it IS plate, there is no stealth involved here. There is a loud *CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK* as he goes, with the odd low hanging branch or two in the trees being snapped by the top of the greatsword as he keeps on going. He does come to a stop at the bugle - but since Gravemoss didn't find anything, he takes this as a cheer. "Rightly so, chap!" declares the Cavalier, before he continues on the path, with the sound of branches breaking as he goes rampaging through with all the grace of a wrecking ball on a wooden orphanage.

"My boy, I am certain -my- beard is larger than yours." Eden allows. Wait a minute, she doesn't have a bea--oh...

Aya begins to move more obliquely, stepping off of the beaten path and following parellel. It isn't difficult to keep the others in view nor within earshot. The latter could be miles, considering Alakton's grace.

James comes along, too.

Alakton pages: I think we're all following the path now.

As you move deeper the trees start to thin out a little again, maybe coming to a clearing or something. There seems to be webs in the trees here and there, though not that uncommon in dark damp places.

"Spiders. I figured it out, it's spiders. Spiders ate 'em." Eden announces.

Raniq jokes, "Cool deal. Mystery solved. I guess we can go home now.

"I'm not sure--" Jokul starts, but... then he just sighs, instead, and waves his free hand in resignation to Eden's general direction. "...Yeah, sure, we'll go with that... But let's just keep going, for now. They did say it was an hour away."

Aya notes the strands of webbing, and now keeps her eyes up as much as ahead. The more the others speak, the more she works to quiet her footsteps across the ground. Just in case there are spiders, and they are hungry. Villagers probably aren't very nutritious.

<OOC> Raniq thought we FF'd the hour.

Alakton frowns for a second. He stares up at the webs, before giving an audiable grunt. "Probably /is/ Spiders." He agrees with Eden. "Because that'd be the one thing that is probably worse than them just walkin' out here and dying from something. Bloody Spiders." He heaves an audiable sigh, before continuing to stomp on forwards. Siege gives a 'WARK' of annoyance at the whole matter, considering it's getting deeper into the woods.

From afar, Aya is attempting to be quiet, but doesn't know if stealth checks are necessary at this point.

Raniq's familiar hides under his cloak.

Eden turns to start heading back out of the forest, clearly believing Raniq to be sincere. "It is a sad loss, yes, but such is nature, isn't it? Perhaps this is revenge for burning the forests." She stares a moment, pausing in her step. "We haven't done that yet. Perhaps, then," She offers, "It is vengeance for infesting their domain, building lodgings, burning--" She squints, then looks to Jokul, as though he had some sort of answers.

No. Clearly, he has nothing.

"You know, they may not eat them right away. Spiders, you see, large spiders, really... often wrap up their prey," She turns back around to keep walking, apparently undecided on where she's going. "And inject them with toxins, poisons, it really varies from species to species... some of them -liquify- your internal organs, and then, SLRRRPRPRRLRP!" She flails her arms around, "SUCK 'em all out." Sounds like a good Friday night.

This line of conversation continued.

"Alright, alright, *ALRIGHT*," moans Jokul with a very distinct, *disgusted* shiver, and he waves his hand at Eden. Or more flails it. "We get it, we get it, just... *UGH*." His eyes squint shut briefly, and with a heavy inhale of air.... he still sets himself moving forward again. "Still need to deal with *them* if that's the case. That's what we've been paid to do."

You see small spiders, normal sized ones, there could be a lot of them but then there could be something bigger that has made the webs. The game trail goes deeper.

Eden notes the intake of breath, taking in a quick one of her own through clenched teeth. "I wouldn't do that. You can actually injest the young, and then..." She makes needly little motions with her fingers, "Bleeehhh-REEEE," Who knows what she's on about? The bursting motion she's making at her chest cavity is pretty telling, though.

Raniq says, "Jokul's right. Let's just go get this over with and get these folks back home."

Alakton's jovial nature refuses to die off. "Then we'll smoosh the lot of them. I'll tell you what!" He makes a motion with his foot, smoosh smoosh. That's what you get, bloody spiders. "But, if anyone see's any of the larger lot of spiders about, pray call out. That way, we can take care of it -before- they start mobbing. Wherever there's one giant spider, there's probably at least three others." He grunts, "Because that's how they work." He continues following said trail, however.

As they continue to press on, Aya is once again reminded of the precept of evolution. Survival of the fittest. Preservation of the gene pool or blood. Whatever one might call it, she begins to wonder whether arachnids might make better use of some of the raw materials present. Aya also widens the distance between her course and others', on the off chance that it might somehow be contagious.

"...Someone remind me to invest in alchemist's fire once we get back to the city," grumbles Jokul, thus. Probably less happy with every passing thought and word involving spiders.

Raniq trudges along.

All of you fall to notice that the ground has been laced with larger webs as you come around a bend. They blended in well with the ground. You are all entangled in it, except Aya who deftly manages to see it in time and leap back. <OOC> Aya thinks that is fitting as her not walking anywhere near the others likely helped.

"Well, bollocks." declares Alakton as he finds himself entangled in the web.

"WARK." agrees Siege.

<OOC> Zyla says, "everyone can pose reacting to that"

James flaps, frustrated at his feathers, feet, and newly refurbished cloak, among other things, getting tangled. "Oh bother. Do we still have fire as an option?"

Eden stares down at the webbing, "Well. I hope it's not those inard sucking ones. Did you know that their mandibles..." Gravemoss bugles again. "... Not the time?"

<OOC> Raniq says, "Can Hydraulic Push exert sufficient force to break me free of the web I'm in?"

Aya's quiet focus appears to have proven justified. As the others converse, jest, and discuss ingestion and/or incineration, she comes to a rather abrupt halt. The ground doesn't appear ...right.

Raniq says, "I can cast a spell to shoot fire from my hands."

"DEFINITELY not the time," growls Jokul, who now produces a dagger from his belt and, apparently having not thought of anything else (even if he didn't really spend any time thinking about it), tries to just cut himself free.

<OOC> Zyla says, "could but...will have to be on your action since we are..." As you realize that you are stuck, well all but Aya, you can hear and then see large shapes coming down out of the trees.

Heaving up his greatsword, Alakton swings it down towards Eden with a heave of effort, slamming the blade into the ground before yanking it up, leaving the cleric free from webbing. Siege gives a screech of irritation at the webbing as it snaps out its claws, with a snkt-snkt, the webbing is removed from Alakton - leaving the griffon still webbed up. "I will get to you in just a moment, Siege. You're still vicious as you are. Yes you are! Yes you are!" He takes the time to croon all talking-to-cute-rabbit like to the Griffon.

GAME: Eden rolls 1d8+3: (1)+3: 4 <OOC> Eden facepalm. <OOC> Zyla says, "that won't do it." <OOC> Zyla says, "cast and pose" GAME: Zyla advances the initiative order.

It is now Aya's turn! James is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Aya ended. <OOC> Zyla says, "aya" GAME: Raniq refreshes spells.

Eden doesn't seem particularly fussed with being tangled in webbing, but she's still thankful when she's free. The pendant at her neck pulses with a verdant light as her hand comes up to grip it in her palm, her fingers wrapping around it like the roots of a tree. Her eyes flicker closed and a cool breeze rushes through the thick forestry, "Mother," She utters in reverence, "Bless us with your boon of earth, the strength of mountains, the grace of wind." It's a simple thing, but it her prayer does appear to be answered as the spell takes affect. Gravemoss busies himself by skewering at the webbing with his odd horns, to no avail.

<OOC> Aya says, "Are the dark shapes coming down over the web?" <OOC> Zyla says, "they are coming down from the trees, on webs yes, basically they covered the ground in webs to trap potential prey. They are about 15' up in the air right now." <OOC> Raniq says, "So, it's just our feet that are caught? Where we tread upon the webs?" GAME: Aya refreshes special ability pools. <OOC> Aya will use her Sp ability to drop Darkness on herself for now. Aya has no intention of jumping into the webbing that she just halted to avoid. She will wait... but not idly. Aya calls to the shadows, and the shadows answer. They flock to her, overwhelming much of ambient and artifical light in her immediate vicinity.

<OOC> Alakton says, "Eden already casted bless." <OOC> Zyla says, "was just going to say that" <OOC> James says, "okay moment" <OOC> James says, "summon monster II, giant spider" Raniq pages: I can use a force missile 7/day for 1d4+1 damage <OOC> Zyla says, "okay cast and pose casting." James starts to do what comes naturally to him, taking his small hourglass token, to pray for blessings on the group. But hearing that Eden has already done this. Well, he goes for something else. He calls for a celestial Giant Spider to come to his aid. It should be able to handle the webs.

"More spiders?! Really?!" As good of an idea it might be, Jokul is still not particularly amused by what James summons up, apparently. Maybe it even urges him to swipe his greatsword across the webbing surrounding him even harder, for that matter, all things taken into consideration and whatnot. The spiders climb down out of the trees, supported a little by webs and starts to attack. They are up in people's faces. One bites Alakton and gets a chunk. One bites at Eden and one at Gravemoss, but they miss. One bites at James and misses, and one bites at Jokul and misses as well, the last two bite at Raniq and miss.

James finishes his prayer and another giant spider appears. Only unlike the others, this one has an aura of the celestial, and appears beside him. James thankfully is just missed by a spider approaching, and glares at it. He then taps his own spider, muttering a quiet prayer to Raven, which gives the celestial spider a swelling of power. It then lashes out at the attacking spider, getting in a nasty, poisonous bite.

"Alright--" Jokul growls out upon taking a sideward stomp -- not just closer to the spider that came at him earlier, but aligning himself closer to the others, too. His other hand takes firm grip of his oversized sword, too. "Let's play." The words are like a trigger for a cannon that launches the massive blade into a horizontal arc that cuts across a spider cleanly, only to carry on, without stopping, through another one -- sending chopped spiderlegs and... various other spiderbits and goo (ew) flying into the air when the Aesir brings his sword up again at the end of his step, and propped into rest against his shoulder once more.

<OOC> Raniq says, "For my to hit roll with a ray, is it 1d20 + bab + dex or 1d20 + bab + int or something else?" <OOC> Eden says, "It's ranged."

Alakton heaves his greatsword around in an arc, apparently wishing to keep the momentum going as he steps in towards Eden. He heaves in, but whiffs at the end as his attack goes wide. Siege clacks its beak as it flails its claws towards the one attacking Gravemoss, scoring two deep wounds on the Spider. "WARK."

A scimitar of the same green light as before appears, AS THOUGH BY MAGIC. (It was magic.) It begins its battling in lieu of the cleric that takes a quick step back in her casting, Gravemoss coming out of left field to ram its horns into the spider that's doing its level best to fight.

James feels comfortable enough having a 'bodyguard' to cast another spell, praying and touching his own chest, causing a shimmering field to spring to life around his body. Meanwhile, the celestial spider at his side lunges again. Having gotten ina good bite, it bites again, seizing hold of the attacking spider. With a hiss and a furious clamp, the summoned spider cuts the life right out of its target.

Jokul takes a few seconds to survey the situation. Which is mostly him taking a few stomps along the grounds and eyeing every remaining spider. Up until he suddenly spins himself around in a motion that launches his sword from his shoulder, effectively, and SLAMS it down into the spider in front of Raniq, cleaving the thing in half and... probably launching the two halves apart along with pillowing dirt from the sheer force of the giant piece of metal landing on the ground. And here he was complaining about spiders earlier.

It is now Eden's turn! Aya is next!

Alakton's head turns on cue with the screech of pain from his Griffon. He heaves up his sword and suddenly sounds a lot less jovial in his roar of anger, bringing the blade down on the spider and promptly smooshing it until it's damn well dead. Siege does it's best to turn, flicking out it's front claws at the one attacking Eden, leaving a deep gouge in it's flank.

<OOC> Zyla says, "eden" <OOC> Eden says, "Uh. I'll attack the one on me, as will the spiritual weapon, and Gravemoss." Wiff! Stab! Gore! Gravemoss bugles in victory, spattered with the remnants of the spider that had been attacking Eden, the glowing sword having gone at one of the thing's limbs, perhaps slowing it down so that the elk might strike the killing blow. He pauses, huffing down at the twitching body, before prancing around it in a tight circle, clearly pleased with himself. "Keep it up, Jokul! Some day, the size of your sword might inspire your hair to grow!"

With that, there don't seem to be any moving spiders, well the summoned one James called, but the rest seem to be down.

<OOC> Alakton says, "Can I do a perception and/or survival check to see if we can see any of those dead bodies of the peasantry?" <OOC> Zyla says, "yes." <OOC> Eden says, "Let us all look with our special eyes." As you look around you can find cocoons that are people shaped, well all but Jokul. He finds webs.

James gives his spider a pat, and lets him run free for the remaining seconds he'll be around before he poofs back to whatever celestial plane he's from. James then searches for the taken ones, checking if any are alive as he finds them.

Alakton huffs for a moment as he heaves his sword back onto his shoulder. He grunts for a bit, looking over Siege a few times before being satisfied there won't be any lasting damage. He looks over his shoulder at Eden. "Quite right, you were, bloody spiders! Quite an adventure." With that though, he moves over to one of the cocoons, to peel one open and look inside.

"Why did it have to be spiders?" Jokul grumbles even after everything... and all the while he's giving his sword one more downward swing that stops just short of the ground, to force the spider-goo-stains (again, ew) off of the blade. "Suppose that does the job though, at least. Any of them alive?"

As you find the concooned bodies and get webs off them enough you find that most of them are alive, only one is dead, the rest are paralyzed though.

Raniq profusely thanks all of you guys for saving his bacon.

James finally takes the time to shake the last of the webs off of his feet. "Good going, group," he trills.

Raniq offers comforting companionship to rescued villager children, even lets them play with/pet his familiar.

"Because Spiders are Spiders. Giant Spiders are going to do Giant Spider things." states Alakton, sharing a rare pearl of wisdom from his obviousness. Those that are healed and movable, the man hauls up. One on his shoulder, two on the back of Siege. Off he goes.

You find most of the missing villagers. In fact from what you had been able to remember, only one is unaccounted for. YOu are able to make up some liters that Gravemoss and Siege can help pull and get all of the villagers home. You get them back and with treatment they are up and well as well as the one of you who was poisoned. They will keep an eye out for the return of the spiders and pay you for your help as well as feed you again before sending you back off to Alexandria.
