  • Title: Forgotten Blood V - Beneath The Stone
  • GM: Harkashan
  • Summary: With Adventurers aware that the Charn are trying to cause a problem in the Sith-makar teritories, they are on the lookout for unusual behavior. There are three dangerous 'vats' of a magical disease being spread throughout the land, and one of those vats may have been spotted getting smuggled into Akochilistli Kuauhtla's lava-filled underbelly. Adventurers rush beneath to stop the Charn from executing their devious plan!

The region of Am'shere, well and far away from Alexandros, is typically only accessed by typical adventurers using the permanent portal that exists between the country of Alexandros and Am'shere's jungles. A region known to be quite dangerous, with even the plantlife being hostile to people. This is where the largest community of Sith-makar come from. For around a hundred years now, they have dealt with Charn incursions - a country populated by those who worship evil gods and live in a region with dwindling natural resources.

As of recently, a new Charnite plot was discovered that would introduce a magical disease to the Sith-makar population, in an attempt to transform them into 'Forgotten' - wild, hungry, uncontrolled. Their production plant has already been destroyed, but 3 large vials of the substance were already on their way to be delivered to Am'shere locations...

And it would turn out, this is one such location.

Akochilistli Kuauhtla, a large Sith-makar community close to the portal, is being watched by Shamans day and night for any evils that might seek to penetrate it. Adventurers are hired to keep watch over the region. They know that these 'vials' and their contents are specifically heat activated.

Right now, a few of these Adventurers find themselves within the Sith-makar community itself. The warm smell of spices all around them. Hot stones being used by the Sith-makar to just relax. There's a constant movement going on around them. Food being made, hunted animals being brought in. There's always movement here. When they spot something of note. 'Tourists' are not unusual, but there's some rather 'unusual' looking robed Sith-makar moving towards an area filled with Hotstones.

In common parlance, Aelmeh, as young as she is, would be considered a homebody. A good book, even better a good spell book for wizards to read while curled up in front of fire was her idea of heaven. If you were to add a fresh crumb cake and some hot tea it would be even better. These comforts seem to be a thing of the past. Since her friend and adventurer Huian had come into her life, sitting has been replaced by being on the road. They had become the best of friends but now she was gone.

Aelemh steadfastly wanted to believe that it wasn't to be forever. She had sworn to find her. Hence, being out on the road with strangers, and not just any road but among the Sith-makar, far from her comfy house and parlor. The warmth and spices had drawn her toward the Hot Stones but she kept an eye on the others that she had come here with. Drawing her cloak together over her long robes, she turns to warily watch the approach of the robed Sith.

Jungle was not the preferred habitat for someone like Crik. Robes, clattering of... things, feathers. Yet, there were undoubtedly plenty of mysteries in such jungles, even if there were more pressing matters to attend to.

Such as pulling up one of his cloaks over into a pseudo-robe, and trailing in on after the unusual Sith-makar. The corvid egalrin was occasionally doing his odd, half running, half hopping movement with his neck bobbing back and forth, but mostly he was flowing in between the crowd, trying to get closer to his quarry.

Trailing after people was half of Crik's profession, after all.

GAME: Crik rolls disguise: (19)+11: 30

More work wasn't a bad thing, but Reithak could still be a bit unhappy about their work. The large egalrin was more than a bit on edge, shifting awkwardly on their taloned feet and fidgeting with their scabbard.

"I don't like this, I don't like this at all. There's too much ground to cover, but I'll be damned if this place falls to disease." The egalrin grumbles. "They look interesting over there, how about we give them a visit?"

GAME: Aelmeh rolls perception: (6)+7: 13

Blinking, her eyebrows draw together in a frown as she watches the approaching Sith curiously. Drunk? Crippled? The figure lists to the side as if his or hers back is disjointed. The robe seems oddly large for the small head it covers.

To both of her companions whose eyesight must be keener and senses must surely be keener than hers, "Kind of odd don't you think?

Aelmeh & Reithak"

The strange robed figures make it to the hot stones and look around eachother. They don't seem to have spotted Crik, Reithak and Aelmeh yet. The hoods themselves slumped a bit over their heads, making it hard for them to get a proper periphery. One then points at one of the hot stones and the gap between it and the ground.

It's quite common in this community to find these places where hot steam still rises up from below. The hotstones of this community are heated by a lava flow beneath the community.

Suddenly, a snake-like rope wraps around the hotstone, and the robed figures quickly begin to climb down the magical rope!

Reithak"

Crik~"

GAME: Aelmeh casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14

Tugging on the end of her blond braid, Aelmeh regards the rock climbing expedition curiously and takes a step closer to observe the source of magic she had felt. Magic there undoubtedly is but what kind and the identity of the caster is not apparent. She casts a spell scrying the magic which gives her no more information than what careful observation brings.

Oh no. Crik hoists up his head, looks around for the rest of the party - then he signals with his hands in a rapid fashion. Point to them, point to him, circle in air, arm going down for a dive.

Yes.

Then there's a bit of a ruffle, before Crik quickly runs on after the group and attempts to join in on the whole diving into the hole with a rope group, acting as if he belong with the rest of the group. The sneaky corvid's plan? To hide in the group. Next step in the plan: yes.

GAME: Crik rolls bluff: (7)+11: 18

"Oh, gods damn it." Reithak curses to herself, Already jogging off to where the people were heading into the rocks. "Hey now, I don't think any work was scheduled on the basking rocks, were there?" She shouts down to the hole. "If you gotta do something down there, come back up and explain yourselves, alright?"

"What.. what?" the young wizard sputters as Crik makes the brash decision to follow suit. "Seriously. Egalrin!" Lovely companions, good in a fight but spontaneous. It is the kindest word Aelmeh can find in the moment as she watches flabbergasted. Turning to Reithak, "Think we should go down?"

Another step brings her within reach of the rope. What would Huian do?

Rash is the word of the day. Well, for this whole adventure. The enchanted rope makes clinging to it easily, a few lengths down and she feels confident enough to look at the descending figures.

With shock, she sees a necromantic magic symbol glowing faintly on one of the figures. Nothing welcome in her limited experience. "Ware, Reithak," she calls.

The robed ones begin to climb down the rope in awkward manner. Crik joining after them, it seems they just accept that they're part of the group. They are about a quarter of the way down when Reithak shouts down the hole. They look up for a moment, pausing... then quickly shout something towards eachother.

"Yip Yip! Oh no we've been spotted!" <Draconic>

"Yip yip! Quicker! Go down quicker!" <Draconic>

And down they go, trying to climb faster!

"Yip yip yip yap yap yip yap!"

"Yip yip! We must deliver the shiny!" <Draconic>

Until they get to the bottom of the rope, and onto hot ground. Lavaflow all around them, and they try to make distance. The robes falling off as they try to get away...

Crik sees the short scaled ones run off. At that instant, the corvid egalrin has one thought - he really should read all those dictionaries he has been gathering. And they have been gathering dust.

Robed head tilting sideways, upwards, sideways, as the others run off... before the short egalrin suddenly bursts into a sprint as well.

"Yip yip yap caw yip caw caw yip yip!" Crik calls out after them, waving a hand, as if trying to catch up with the rest of the group.

GAME: Crik rolls bluff: (16)+11: 27

The heat creeps up Aelmeh's legs as she descends. She can feel the hot air lift the hair on her temples then glue it to the perspiration breaking out on her face. One tentative foot onto the hot rock then the other before she stops to look around. Crik is still up ahead of her.

"Reithak! This might be it! One of them is carrying magic." She catches a glimpse of robes falling and revealing unexpected shapes. "Crik, Crik, slow down, wait for us!"

Reithak is the last down, but not too far behind, and by the time they're at the bottom, the large egalrin is fanning her hands from the slight burn on them. The inquisitor looks up, and chitters something angrily, shaking her head to her ally as she runs as far forward as she can get. "I knew that he wasn't to be trusted, gods damn it all. We need to get going!" She shouts to Aelmeh, within earshot of the kobolds. "He came here to help those kobolds in the first place, don't let him get his hands on it!"

Yip yip /caw/?

The kobolds don't seem to notice at all as they rush forward. The piles of robes dropped onto the ground soon catching fire. The heat down here is harsh and somewhat unbearable. Those who can sweat, begin to sweat profusely as their body tries to protect themselves, followed by aid sweat starting to heat up!

Two of them at the back are pulling out a giant green vial between the two of them, hoisting it up and setting it down, while the other two near the front are quickly motioning for Crik to get closer.

"Yip yip! Quick quick! Adventurers coming!" <Draconic>

"Yip yip! Take the robe off, it just gets in the way!" <Draconic>

The latter of the two then points a crooked wand at the ground, and suddenly, a strange drooly magma-y fire elemental rises from the ground and wiggles its arms out in a defensive manner. The wand itself immediately goes up in flames, its last charge used up.

"Yip yip! Protect us from the meany Adventurers!" <Draconic>

Only for Reithak to shout out in Tradespeak - bolstering Crik's lie.

At this point, one of the Kobolds at the rear moves forward to help protect the big green vial, and seems to be making magical signing motions and squawking and yip-yapping something in Draconic.

Just on the edge of her range, one of the Kolbolds stops to look back at his pursuers.

"Tsk,tsk. Not a good move."

After few muttered words, Aelmeh makes a fist. A glowing spear coalesces, red with the reflected magma light. She heft the spear, centers herself, aims and throws.

"Stop right now before I force you to stop! This will not benefit anyone!" Reithak half yells at the kobolds, finding a serendipitously straight path through the cavern where she can break into a sprint towards the group, only stopped short by the stone in her way as she skids to a halt.

Crik had no time to contemplate, slow down, or question common sense. He was a kobold, after all. "Yip yip!" He calls out, making exaggerated waves of his hands as he 'attempts' to disrobe, whilst looking like he was getting stuck in the folds. A black egalrin tail bops up from underneath the robes, going up and down.

Seeing corpses and minions rise around him, the corvid continues running past the Kobolds, letting out a 'caw' and another 'yap' in shock as the kobold gets slaughtered. Looking behind him, he makes a big show about being in panic.

Then he pilfers the vial underneath his robe.

It is now Aelmeh's turn! Reithak is next!

The kobolds are quick to act. Ignoring Crik, believing them to be an ally, the Scalecaster Kobold is quick to point at Reithak as she rushes forward. A frosty spell slamming into her armor. The Kobold Bomber quick to throw a bomb at her too, exploding loudly within the cavernous underground beneath the Sith-makar community.

The kobold that summoned the Magmin is about to grab the green vial when Aelmeh blasts it with her Magic Missiles! Ripping its little body apart. Giving Crik the opportunity he needs to fool them into believing he's protecting the vial from the evil Adventurers!

Aelmeh quickly comes under assault by the Scalecaster Kobold, trying to avenge its kobold. "Yip yip!" It shouts at her, while the Kobold Sniper fires a crossbow bolt at her, stabbing her in the shoulder with the bolt at the same time that the Scalecaster gets her with a bit of frost!

For a moment, Aelmeh had doubted the raven-like Egalrin, wondering if he had succeeded in fooling her into trusting him. But there he is with the vial. Surely, he is helping them and not the enemy. She runs forward, offering a tasty target to a Scalemaster. Who is the one being rash now?

Something hammers her left shoulder, setting it on fire with pain and she cries out in pain. Staggering forward with one hand clasped to the bolt, she tries to cast a spell in return. Cold spreads down her side, a relief in a way as it offsets the pain of crossbow bolt. A cold lethargy slows her as she tries to stumble into range of kobolds.

Fiercely angry at herself for not putting up a shielding spell of some kind, she throws a Scorching Ray reflexively before she is too weak to return the attack. It misses the Scalemaster, zooming over his head.

"Yip yip! Betrayal!" <Draconic> The sniper shouts as a blade stabs into its back, just barely missing its heart. The kobold stumbles forward, and quickly turns, firing a crossbow bolt right into Crik's taloned foot!

The elemental and the bomber are flanking Reithak, slowly burning and stabbing at the inquisitor bird. And to the south, Aelmeh is up against a crafty Kobold Scalecaster. It is laughing at her, as it avoids an icy splash. In a meany kobold kind of way. What a jerk.

The heat is getting the better of her. She casts off her cloak, it can be replaced and only hampers her. Freed of its weight she draws her crossbow out and painfully fits it to her uninjured shoulder then reconsiders. Now, that Crik has revealed himself as their ally, they are all in danger. Stupid with pain, she throws a ray of frost that melts in the ambient heat and magic, missing her target.

The sharp lava rocks make moving difficult. Aelmeh stumbles. A lucky stumble that takes her out of the range of the Scalecaster's attack. She almost wishes it had hit her as a rush of frigid air goes over her. Propped against a large stone she casts an augmenting spell on Reithak, hoping to increase her already formidable attacks.

Reithak continues to be under brutal assault by the Bomber and the Magmin. The magma elemental severely hampering Reithak through its intense heat - while making it hard for Reithak to hurt it through its flames!

The scalecaster's cold spell fails to touch Aelmeh as it tries to take down the Adventurer while the wizard begins to cast. Reithak slowly starting to grow larger...

Crik gets another arrow into their body while attacking the Sniper. The two dancing around one-another practically, as they get closer and further apart by each moment. But the Kobold Sniper is clearly on its last legs!

Crik is _terrified_. Mostly because Reithak is big, not because there is a flaming elemental in front of him. Which he briefly starts to shank - before he sees a far better opportunity.

Distracted by shiny as one does, Crik suddenly bursts into half-run with wings splaying out from underneath his cloaks - but he gets burned very heavily by the elemental as he does so. Knife comes out and slashes at the bomber kobold, nearly dropping it down on the spot.

Crik was hit hard enough for things to audibly crack. This time it was not even the things he kept strapping himself with. He frantically backs away and pops up one of the vials, chugging it down through his bloodied beak. "The void, beckons." He says and opens up his beak with a weak caw.

Crik."

The bolt in Aelmeh's shoulder grinds against the bone as she looses her light crossbow. Teeth gritted she fits a bolt into the device and lets fly. Her vision is blurred and the blot flies to her target's side.

Things go from bad to worse. As Crik moves around Reithak, the elemental chases after him. The fiery thing is an absolute menace. And even as Reithak lays down the Kobold Bomber, it doesn't stop the elemental from commiting revenge upon Crik for slicing at it, by slamming him to the ground and burning his body -- only for something to keep Crik going.

A town is at risk here!

The scale caster, which is having its duel with Aelmeh, continues to focus on her, even as her acid burns away at its face. It yip-yips angrily at her and sends another deep wave of flames at her!

Aelmeh, add me on Discord under zykov"

Reithak winces as their ally nearly goes down, just barely hanging on after. The inquisitor pulls out their holy symbol in one hand, and chants a hurried prayer. "Flames of passion and creativity, cauterize my kin and allies wounds." <auran> They offer, putting a hand on Crik's shoulder, and stemming the worst of his wounds. "Just hang on, we just gotta get rid of this elemental, and it'll be fine!"

Crik was confused that they were still standing after that slam. Many of his cloaks are burning by now, and he stumbles against the giant hand on his shoulder. "Th-thanks. The void is so near." He offers, as he holds up his knife.

With another swipe, he attempts to cut down the elemental, to no success.

Crik does his best to try and attack the elemental in front of him, beak open and swiping haphazardly. He does get in a good solid hit - but the fire elemental remains standing. And his beak continues to bleed.

Reithak takes a moment to catch their breath with Crik a bit more stable for the time being, and now they hold the holy symbol close to their chest. The symbol glows heavily for a moment, and the egalrin seems to regain some semblance of a second wind, holding their rapier a bit more steadily. Crik, Aelmeh, stay close, I'll do everything I can, We can't afford to fall here."

Things continue to go downhill for the Adventurers. Though most of the Kobolds are downed, they're still trying to get the vial back! The caster is of course focused on Aelmeh, icing her further - sticking her foot to the ground and cackling at her, while she retaliates with a quick crossbow bolt shot. But with the intense heat here, she misses. The shimmering heat making it almost impossible to see straight.

Crik goes down as the Elemental slams the bird to the ground, before trying to engulf the bird in flames...

"Hang on!" The inquisitor shouts, grabbing the fire elemental with their leather and steel wrapped hand, and thrusts their rapier to the hilt through the flames, tearing it down through it and dissipating it's form with the movement. But it Crik was already down on the ground, and shortly after Aelmeh collapsed as well.

The towering egalrin glares down at the remaining kobold. "NONE WILL DIE TO YOUR DISEASES TODAY. THIS TOWN WILL NOT SUFFER LIKE MINE." They yell, dashing up next to the remaining foe, and jabbing swiftly with their rapier, straight through the kobold's heart, with a large hole remaining as she pulls it out from the sheer size of the blade.

But there was no time to relax or collect herself, and the egalrin was immediately dragging Aelmeh away from the flames, and pressing their holy symbol to their wounds, closing them and healing the worst of it, and giving her the time she needed to see to Crik as well, repeating the process. "Hey, get up, both of you, we got this done!" She tells them both cheerfully, helping Crik to his feet. "Let's get out of here, now. I don't want to risk that vial activating while we're down here."

It was a brutal battle. But with the smart thinking of crik, the magical prowess of Aelmeh, and the might Reithak, they manage to take down the squad of kobolds that had been sent down by the Charnites. The Magmin, which had so brutally seared their flesh and burnt away at the Adventurers, finally bursts apart and disappears back to the Fire plane...

Aelmeh, Crik and Reithak eventually make it back above, where Shamans have just arrived on the scene, not understanding yet what had happened, and what these three had managed to accomplish.

The vial of magical disease, ready to be destroyed... a celebration would be due.

But yet, that creeping feeling won't go away. The knowledge that there's two more vials out there... somewhere.
