  • Title: Forest Troubles
  • Emitter: Zyla
  • Characters: Aya 3, Nicolai 4, Arisha 3, Jokul 3
  • Place: A forest outside Alexandria
  • Time: Mar 20, 2016
  • Summary: Hired by the Guild of Adventurers, to look into the troubles a village is having with a nearby forest.
  • APL: 3
  • Encounter 1: 3 CR 2 Worgs, CR 5
  • Encounter 2: 1 CR 5 Winter Wolf, CR 5

The three of you were hired by the guild to look into some trouble that a local village has been happening. They have been losing livestock to something in the nearby forest and they are a little leary of the forest due to superstitions, so they have hired outside help to look into the problem. This has led you to heading to the village, being fed, explained where it was happening and then taken out to the edge of the forest.

The Forest itself is thick and dark, a small trail leads into the dark woods.

Being the group's tracker, Arisha finds the trail, and despite the forest being dark, she still finds the trail and waits for the others.

At least the villagers offered them food. Otherwise, they don't seem to be very useful. The forest is the most comfortable state and shade at the moment as they walk out into it. <OOC> Aya attaches her name to that.

GAME: Nicolai refreshes spells. GAME: Nicolai casts Longstrider. Caster Level: 4 DC: -88

Nicolai catches up to join the group, not breathing nearly hard enough to account for the speed at which he was moving. "I hope I'm not too late," he offers the others, unwrapping a cover over the blade of a glaive.

<OOC> Zyla says, "perceptions" GAME: Arisha rolls perception: (16)+11: 27

And Jokul more or less just follows wherever the job at the time is leading him. So he's prowling through the trail to meet up with everyone else, too, lugging an oversized sword along, propped over his metal-covered shoulder.

GAME: Jokul rolls perception: (6)+3: 9 GAME: Arisha refreshes spells. GAME: Aya rolls perception: (18)+11: 29 <OOC> Arisha says, "Can I follow the track, Zyla?" <OOC> Zyla says, "perception nicolai" GAME: Nicolai rolls perception: (13)+8: 21 You paged (Arisha, Aya) with 'the two of you notice some tracks at the edge of the trail, you almost miss them, but luckily found some.'

Arisha heads over towards the trail, and notices the tracks. She does notice Nicolai is breathing hard though, so she waits. "catch your breath quickly, I have a trail." She says tugging out a pistol, and checking the cartridge inside of it.

Arisha pages: can I make a knowledge check to see what sort of thing would make this kind of track?

Aya follows the one already proven to know where she goes, looking over the forest floor, also. She spies the tracks, as well, but can't immediately identify them. "What do we expect to meet?" she quietly asks Arisha.

You paged Arisha with 'nature'

Nicolai gives Arisha a wry look and then nods. "I'm fine." He peers down at the trail. "Yes, I can see it's a trail. What makes you think this is the way to go...?" He doesn't seem challenging, more curious.

"Whatever likes the taste of livestock, I guess," Jokul wagers in response to Aya's question, with a roll of the shoulder his sword isn't resting over. "Probably something blood-hungry. Hopefully strong."

GAME: Arisha rolls knowledge/nature: (19)+7: 26 You paged Arisha with 'look wolflike, but much larger, so worg or dire wolf probably.'

Arisha crouches down to take a closer look at the tracks while everyone catches their breath, but after a bit, she stands back up. "Definitely a wolf, but larger....much larger. Be ready for wolf-pack tactics." That's when she starts to walk her way forward, following the trail somewhat easily.

It almost feels like the forest is creeping up on you. The canopy of trees hangs over the trail, dark, preventing much light in. Barely able to see still but definitely going to be impossible to see unless you see in the dark once the sun goes down, which isn't that far off.

"Wolf-pack tactics," Nicolai repeats to himself in a murmur. He follows along after Arisha, staying a handful of steps back and trying to look at their surroundings as they walk. He keeps his glaive held in both hands. "That doesn't sound so good," he admits.

<OOC> Nicolai also will cast Light! GAME: Nicolai casts Light. Caster Level: 4 DC: 12

Maybe it's they who are creeping up on the forest? Until the sudden glowing one behind them, that is. Aya snaps out a harsh, if whispered explicative and distances herself from the conveniently conspicuous target. Maybe he can be useful as bait. That is something, at least.

Arisha is able to close her eyes in time when Nicolai starts up his light. "Not all of us need the light, Nicolai, but thank you for the concern." She doesn't even sound snarky. "COme on, this way." She says as she continues to follow the tracks.

Nicolai has the good grace to look embarassed. He tries to cover the illumination but since it's his gauntlet that is actually shiniing with light he can only manage to dim it a bit, and even that is accomplished by sticking his glowing hand in the armpit of his other arm. "Ah...right. I'll just save this for when there's something to look at in detail," he offers.

"And what of those of us that do...?" Asks Jokul, then, with a slow lift of one of his dark brows sent to Arisha's way. "Shadows and dark are still shadows and dark even for us from the north."

<OOC> Zyla says, "perceptions" GAME: Nicolai rolls perception: (11)+8: 19 GAME: Arisha rolls Perception: (12)+11: 23 GAME: Zyla rolls 1d20+9: (13)+9: 22

"Use it when we have already surprised the hunted," Aya points out, "not give use away beforehand..."

GAME: Aya rolls perception: (12)+11: 23 GAME: Jokul rolls perception: (4)+3: 7 You paged (Arisha, Aya, Nicolai) with 'you all three hear someone calling for help ahead in the distance.' You paged (Aya, Arisha) with 'something seems off but you aren't sure what'

Nicolai peers ahead. "You guys hear that? I'll check it out!" Perhaps still flustered by his novice spellcasting earlier he rushes towards the sounds.

<OOC> Nicolai is also gonna cast invisibilty on myself when I am out of sight ;)

Arisha stops Nicolai's rush forward with her left hand....which is a BIG warning sign since her left arm is completely artifice. "Hang on." She says before looking to Aya. then starting her own way forward. "Don't rush in too fast. Something isn't right." She even draws her pistol....that's how 'not right' it is. "If the problem is more than hungry beasts, it could be bait for a trap. If it is only hungry beasts," Aya rolls her shoulder, "they could be less hungry soon." Either way, there seems no reason to her to rush in. She does move forward, though. Simply cautiously.

Nicolai gently (but firmly) pushes the hand out of his way. "If there are wolves there, they'll never see me coming." He flashes a grin. "Trust me." Then he sobers . " But if a traveller is in danger, I must go to their aid."

"Be careful then." Arisha says. "if you're that bold, then I should warn that I'm not that accurate with my pistol."

GAME: Nicolai casts Invisibility. Caster Level: 4 DC: 14 <OOC> Zyla says, "so Nicolai moving anhead, everyone else, following or?" <OOC> Arisha says, "I'm sorta behind him, but keeping a respectable distance. So I don't give away his position."

The Giantborn begins to fade from sight, starting with his hands and boots and then spreading over the rest of his body. The last thing to vanish is his broad grin. "In that case maybe we'd both better be careful." Then he's gone, and there's a rustle in the forest far ahead.

<OOC> Aya is moving, yes. <OOC> Jokul trails along

As Nicolai vanishes and moves ahead, before long comes to a clearing. There is a large wolf seeming to be attacking something at the far side of the clearing. Nicolai sees it first, the others of you can see the slight opening in the trees ahead.

<OOC> Nicolai says, "Can we tell what it is that is being attacked?" <OOC> Zyla says, "perception from you Nicolai" GAME: Nicolai rolls perception: (17)+8: 25 You paged Nicolai with 'its nothing, and as you are trying to see what it is, you notice two wolves coming at you from the sides, like they waited for you entering the clearing, about 25' away and they are coming right for you.'

"It IS a trap!" booms Nicolai's voice from empty space. "Wolves, three of them!" This time his voice sounds closer, as if he's moving back. "I don't know how, but two of them know where I am." His voice is excited, probably more so than it should be given his situation.

<OOC> Zyla says, "free pose still from everyone"

"Even while invisible, you still have a scent, Nicolai." Arisha says drawing her pistol and aiming at the general area of the wolves. She holds her fire though, because it'd be just her luck that she's aiming right at Nicolai. So instead, she casts the wrath spell on her pistol.

GAME: Arisha casts Wrath. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 <OOC> Zyla says, "pokes Jokul and aya for poses"

"That is good to know," Aya notes softly, to no one in particular. She moves off to one side, continuing to close, but hoping to do so from a different direction.

"Ah, well, well..." mumbles Jokul while he stomps his way through the group to get himself imposed to the front of everyone other than Nicolai -- which likely leaves him in front (and slightly to the side of) Arisha. "And here I was afraid we'd be going against ones that can't even think to do anything but charge blindly..." His hand tightens around the grip of his massive sword and teeth flash out. "Let 'em come, then."

<OOC> Aya says, "That is frighteningly consistent."

Suddenly two of the wolves burst from the trees to either side of Arisha, apparently they circled around and went through the trees, though they both fail to snap at her. So that puts them behind everyone else.

<OOC> Zyla says, "aya" <OOC> Aya says, "Are the wolves still invisible?" <OOC> Zyla says, "no, they are visible, the two attacking arisha. and they weren't invisible, just really blended well with the surroundings." <OOC> Aya says, "I only meant that I wasn't sure what was apparent." <OOC> Zyla says, "yep, you see the two that attacked arisha, they are 20' from you" <OOC> Aya will move to one, preferably opposite Arisha, and strike it. <OOC> Zyla says, "can do...go for it" GAME: Aya rolls melee+2: (8)+5+2: 15 <OOC> Zyla says, "hit" GAME: Aya rolls 1d6+2: (2)+2: 4 <OOC> Zyla says, "stings it" GAME: Zyla advances the initiative order.

"Watch it!" Jokul roars out over towards Arisha in time with him stepping towards her -- and in the same motion turning himself around in a spin that carries the absolutely oversized sword up from his shoulder, and with the spinning momentum gets the wide blade slamming down and through the side of one of the wolves. Who knows if he meant that call to Arisha to mean for her to watch out for the wolves or the wide arc of his sword...

<OOC> Arisha says, "okay. I also draw my Khopesh when I move 5'.....use judgment on the wolf, and attack it." <OOC> Arisha says, "using the Khopesh." <OOC> Zyla says, "so going diagonally then? attacking the one the other two have hit, or the unhurt one?" <OOC> Arisha says, "Attacking the one the other two have hit." <OOC> Zyla says, "roll to hit" <OOC> Zyla says, "+2 flanking you can 5' into flanking with jokul" GAME: Arisha rolls weapon1+2: (16)+3+2: 21 <OOC> Zyla says, "hit" <OOC> Arisha says, "and I'm using the destruction judgment." <OOC> Zyla says, "nicolai=one you attacked is still up"

Hearing the barking and the snapping of jaws makes Arisha turn her attention towards the newly emerging wolf. Taking careful aim, Arisha pulls the trigger and blasts it in the eye, killing it instantly. "Your butt's clear Jokul!"

<OOC> Nicolai will attack it again! GAME: Nicolai rolls 1d20+6: (10)+6: 16 <OOC> Zyla says, "hit" GAME: Nicolai rolls 1d8+9: (3)+9: 12 <OOC> Zyla says, "dead" <OOC> Zyla says, "free poses"

Aya watches as one is cut down, another is shot down, and then another falls. "That wasn't hard. The villagers should grow spines with their livestock, and learn to better protect both." Despite her words, she does take a long, slow look around, also. In case the problem is more than a few hungry beasts.

Nicolai's nearly ever-present grin turns shrinks as the wolf gnaws at him. It tries to drag him to the ground but can't quite get the large cleric off of his feet. Nicolai's grin comes back in full effect as he brings his glaive up and then crashing down on the neck of the last wolf.

"Overconfidence has been the downfall of many kingdoms, Aya." Arisha chides her. "Plus these are really big wolves." She says flipping the barrel of her pistol....and using a wirebreush to clean it. "Mmmf...I left the oil back at the temple, blast it." She then looks to Nicolai. "Did you find who was calling us, Nicolai?"

"My butt was fine," Jokul claims -- letting out a nearly-disappointed sound of a sigh with the felling of the final wolf, sword brought turned around in one hand now to be settled into resting against his armored shoulder once again. "Suppose we came here too late?"

Aya rolls one shoulder. "So has fear, incompetence, and empty coffers," she adds to Arisha's list. Looking to Jokul, she gives a slim smile. "Seems we arrived just in time. The beasts were here."

Nicolai's eyes fly open. "In all the excitement I forgot!" He starts to dash for the clearing again, then slows. Thoughtfully, he muses, "I didn't see anything there - the big one was...it was acting like it was attacking something, but nothing was there." By now Nicolai is almost back inside. "Could this be some sort of 'wolf pack tactic'?"

You paged Arisha with 'roll knowledge nature' GAME: Arisha rolls knowledge/nature: (3)+7: 10 <OOC> Arisha is supposed to get +3 on monster lore, I'm guessing it's been added in. <OOC> Zyla says, "probably not...since its situational." You paged Arisha with 'you do get enough though to know now they are worgs, and worgs are known to draw prey in like that'

"It is, actually, Nicolai." Arisha says as she looks over the wolves. "These aren't wolves. They're worgs. They're a dire wolf's bigger and scarier brother. And a lot more intelligent, so their pack tactics are a lot nastier." She then walks up to Nicolai. "One more thing. the invisibility spell doesn't cover your scent. And worgs are dogs.....what do dogs do well?"

"Eeeeh? So tactician wolves now, huh..." Jokul mutters with a grunt. "Good effort from them. But not enough." He tosses a look Aya's way too, with a brow arched curiously. "They pay us to deal with it because they can't, themselves. That's all there is to it."

Nicolai glances at Arisha. "Dogs? What do dogs do well? I don't know, guard? Track?" He nods grimly. "I'll have to keep that in mind next time." He steps back into the clearing for further searching.

Arisha says, "Track....because they use their noses. it also doesn't mute sound." She says putting her hand on Nicolai's wound and giving him a spell to cure his wound. "Feel better?""

<OOC> Zyla says, "if doing healing, cast and roll for the hp" GAME: Arisha casts Cure Light Wounds. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 GAME: Arisha rolls 1d8+3: (6)+3: 9 GAME: You damaged Nicolai for -9 points. 34 remaining.

"So we're looking for semi-intelligent beasts..." Aya looks to Arisha, gesturing to the furred carcasses with one hand. "Beyond these three?"

There is a deep growling voice, "Get out of my Forest..." that comes from the far side of the clearing.

<OOC> Arisha this calls for another knowledge nature check I think. <OOC> Zyla says, "can" GAME: Arisha rolls knowledge/nature: (9)+7: 16

Nicolai grins crookedly. "I am feeling better, thanks." He begins looking around. "How many wolves are there in a pack, normally? Do they..." he trails off at the voice, then turns in that direction. Nicolai is silent for a moment, then calls out in reply, "Your forest? I wasn't aware this forest belonged to any one person..."

You paged Arisha with 'worgs travel with other things sometimes. But worgs don't often talk.'

"So much for 'semi'," Jokul says with a grunt of amusement after the growl, and promptly steps towards the general direction of the growl, but without moving more than a few steps from the rest. "Sorry," he calls over towards the other side of the clearing once he stops, and hefts the sword from his shoulder to point it towards the source of the voice. "But got paid to deal with ones hurting livestock. Ain't turning back before that."

"I'm glad you're doing...." Arisha then turns her head at the voice. "And that must be the leader of their pack." She says softly. "Worgs don't talk though, but they are known to have other beings in their pack." She says putting a cartridge in her pistol and snapping it back. "Seems we're not done yet."

"I have to eat, so they should be glad that I kept it to the livestock." calls the voice. at the far side of the clearing, a huge wolf steps out, larger than the others, and this one is pure white.

"Yes, semi-..." Aya turns her gaze from Jokul to the emerging creature. "If it were truly intelligent, it might have stayed silent and not revealed itself..."

"It seems you are intelligent." Arisha then looks to Aya. "Is the forest that hard to hunt in? or is the livestock just easier prey?"

Nicolai watches for a bit and then blurts, "Don't hurt her -- it's Un'eth!" He studies the figure a bit more and then coughs. "Ah...wait a moment, no it's not. Sorry. Easy mistake." Adjusting his grip on his glaive, the giantborn moves a few steps forward and to one side, so that he's a bit spread out from the others.

"Don't have to be unintelligent to know that sometimes you need to face a fight," Jokul tosses over his shoulder to Aya before his attention turns to the wolf itself. He lets out a heavy sigh after everyone else's words, then. "Does it matter?" He asks. "This is how he chose to live, and it leads to fighting against the will of those who own the livestock." The massive sword is turned towards the wolf, in indication of him beginning to address the beast instead. "So now you have to go through us if you want to keep that up. That simple. How about it?"

The white wolf moves closer, but nothing menacing, "I have large appettite, small forest, does not provide enough." its says as it watches them all closely.

Nicolai grasps his holy symbol. "One way or another we're going to restore peace to this place," he assures the white wolf. "You can talk, so you must be able to think. Think about what you're doing. Why die for nothing?"

"You had a good opportunity," Aya admits to the beast. "The villagers couldn't protect the animals, and wouldn't hunt you. That opportunity looks to be at an end. The hunting isn't so easy anymore. You should find other grounds to hunt."

"because an intelligent wolf can be convinced to leave, or convinced to not prey on a farmer's livestock." Arisha says to the people with her, but then her attention turns to the wolf. "It's still a balance of nature though. the forest may be small, but there's plenty of hunting to go along with it. Sometimes, you have to work to get your food." She then shrugs. "I would rather this didn't come to bloodshed, really. Especially a creature as beautiful as you." She then takes a deep breath. "I'm sure that, if you went into the forest and found a druid or two, they would be willing to help you hunt, and sate your appetite." She then exhales slowly.

The wolf still moves closer watching you all warily. Its probably about 60' from you all around now. "Why should I ask for help?"

Arisha says, "because preying on fenced in livestock is a sign of desparation.....usually. You should've known that hunters would come after you after a while."

"Also the other option is butting heads with us," Jokul points out, head tipping over to one side slightly, sword still held in pointing. "Might be strong enough to come on top, but will probably lose a leg or two while you're at it. Or not strong enough at all, and that's it. Either way..."

Nicolai glances at the rest of the party - quickly, so that he doesn't have to take his eyes off of the giant wolf for long - then begins circling around to flank the creature. "I think you could use the help. And just how many talking wolves are there in this land anyway? Would be a shame if we had to put one of them down."

Aya has nothing further to say and simply waits for the beast to prove its intelligence, or lack thereof.

He growls to Nicolai then before he rolls up onto his feet and just under the swipe of the wolf's claws -- only for the upward swing of his sword from the same rolling motion to go just *past* the wolf and open him up for a giant bite on the side, followed by getting shaken up and then tossed down against the ground. "Fffffuuuu-..." The AEsir growls in pain, hand still desperately grasping at the hilt of the massive sword despite his injuries.

Nicolai raises his holy symbol, healing the party once more. "All right...this time we're doing it the hard way." He takes up his glaive and then looks for an opportunity to bring it to bear.

"Alright..." Jokul growls after he's gotten himself stabilized on his feet again-- and with a step taken towards the white wolf, he spins himself around again to carry his massive sword in a wide, diagonal arc through the air that ends in it sinking into the backside of the beast's neck. IT doesn't cut deep enough to decapitate, and even leaves the blade stuck in between muscle and sinew -- but it does leave the wolf slumping down, too. "...Good fight..." He growls quietly, with a heavy breath exhaled from exhaustion and pain alike. "I'll give you that much..."

Arisha takes a deep breath and sighs as the wolf falls, thanks to Jokul. However, Arisha walks forward and, after aiming her pistol at the head of the wolf, fires another shot into it's head. "To make sure it stays that way." She ejects the casing and starts to clean the pistol. "Looks like that was the culprit. It was a Winter Wolf. Pure evil. It wasn't going to negotiate, but I couldn't tell what it was until it blasted us with the cold." She then looks to Jokul. "Jokul....smash it's head. I don't want it returning as the living dead."

Nicolai sets his glaive in the ground and kneels next to the carcass of the beast. "What a shame," he remarks. "Ah well, guess there was just no talking to it."

"We answered it in the language it wanted," Aya points out. She may be tempted to kick it once more, but doesn't. The firearm shot and more blade should be more than enough... and less blood on her boots to wash off later. "In any case, it's done."

"Like it wasn't tough enough without chance to come back from the dead," Jokul mutters, with a narrowing of his eyes -- and a glob of blood spat out. After wiping a bit of errant staining on his lip, he nods his head to Arisha's way and heaves his oversized sword up, high over his head before swinging it down, *hard* into the limp wolf's head, cleaving through the skull and sending dirt flying into the air after it's landed. "...I think I'm going to have to sit down. And drink a lot of booze."

And with the fall of the white wolf, the forest is quiet again. You are able to bring the remains to show the villagers and they pay you for your services as well as feed you and put you up for the night so you can return to Alexandria the next day.
