  • Time: Sep 13, 2015
  • Summary: Hired by merchant to find out why his produce is late.
  • APL: 4
  • Encounter 1: 3 Wights (CR 3) CR 6 Encounter

A local merchant has been waiting for some crops to come from a farm that he regularly deals with. The owner of the farm is never late with deliveries, so now that the shipment is a week late the merchant is concerned. He hired you all to go and look into the reason for the delay. Directions are given to the farm. Its about a day and a half journey and you are into that second day as you travel towards the farm.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "free rp"

Pelka seems to take the travel time in stride, like a seasoned Alexandrian adventurer. He spends much of the journey gazing longingly up at the sky and the clouds. Sometimes he fiddles with various contraptions he keeps stored in pockets on his belt or bandolier. And he occasionally glances towards MAC-B1G to see if the latter is up to anything interesting.

It's interesting being away from her home and what passes for a 'school' among her people, she's found that the need for coins has become somewhat pressing and as such Nako has taken on this odd job as a way to get her foot in the adventuring door, so to speak. Nako tends to be silent most all the time, the jet black skinned oruch having bound her hair into a single thick braid down her back in preparation for possible combat. When she meets the others she will incline her head in a polite nod, thick lips will part and she'll introduce herself as: "Nako." in a surprisingly soft and husky voice. For the time being the Korite is happy enough to let things develop on their own and busies herself with examining the others arms and armor, though seemingly unconcerned with her apparent lack of both.

Draped in a foot-length, shaggy pelt against the cool autumn wind, the masked Veyshanti has been an... interesting... travelling companion. Not often speaking unless spoken to, occasionally locked in argument with the tiny banded red snake that seems to live in her hip pouch, and climbing trees and floating from branch to branch as whim takes her. When the introductions were made, she identified herself as 'Alba,' and during the arguments it can be overheard that the snake's name is Sarathrazz. All in all, it generally seems as though the travel itself is a boring necessity, and her true focus lies at their destination.

MAC-B1G has determined that outlying farmsteads seem to suffer from an inordinate amount of issues. Perhaps it is their geographic distance and relative lack of defenses. The construct is the antithesis of interesting to many, tromping along tirelessly in travel to their destination. "Query: Do fellow taskforce units possess relevant data concerning destination?"

It is pretty quiet, the trip giving time for the group to converse as they head towards the farm.

"It's a farm." Nako says in a conversational tone (To her, it might be abrupt to other non-oruch) to the War Golem, "Probably some land for vegetables, grain, a stall for swine, they do love their own..." She shrugs a bit, "Oh, and since they haven't delivered the goods, they're probably all dead or captured. Raiders may want to ransom them, maybe just eat them, who knows."

Pelka says, "I think that depends on what you think is 'relevant'." He cocks his head to the side to listen to Nako, then nods jerkily. "That sounds good." He pauses and then adds, "Well not for the farmers. I mean, it sounds like a likely explanation."

"It may also be," Alba says, her toes dragging along the dirt of the road as she bobs comfortably alongside the party, "that they are in hiding. It has been done before, and if there is a less cunning foe assaulting their land, it is likely that they may hide for many a day before starvation would take hold."

"If the local agriculturalists secured themselves in a fortifiable position, probability of their survival is high," the construct concurs with Alba's statement. It's faceplate and cyan optical receptors pand towards Pelka. "Relevent information includes, but is not limited to: topography, population, structual schematics, and potential threats in the vicinity.

"Yes, well...that -does- seem like useful information," Pelka admits. "But strangely they never think to tell us that sort of thing before sending us off on these little quests." He shrugs, the motion causing his wings to stir. "Ah well...we'll know soon enough I'm sure!"

You can tell from the conditions is that you are crossing fields at the moment, fields that look recently harvested but not yet replanted. From the size, the area is probably only densely populated, maybe just the one family and workers for the farm in the immeadiate area. "I hope only," Alba mutters, "that what has brought this danger is aware enough to fear." Tik-tik-tik go the serrated adamant blades welded to the fingertips of the single gauntlet the Witch wears. "If we are to slaughter dumb beasts or walking dead, rather I would to hunt within the Feywood. Defeating thinking things, much more amusing."

<OOC> Tiasa says, "can make a knowledge/nature roll alba" GAME: Alba rolls knowledge/nature: (4)+10: 14

"This locale seems to possess an excessive quantity of agressive predators," the construct makes this determination based off of recent events rather than any detailed data of flora or fauna.

You paged Alba with 'usually the farms this close to the city belong to the kingdom with families working them, either serfs or freemen who work the land for a part of the harvests. How big each farm over all and how many fields depends on size of the workers available in that family group. From the size you can tell might be up to a dozen, and at least half that many at this farm.'

Pelka peers up at the skies. "I don't see any predators." He seems to think of something and then runs his gaze across the fields and the horizon as well. "Maybe the family is in hiding." That seems like a much happier theory and he gives Alba a tiny nod for suggesting it.

You paged Alba with 'basically you don't know specific info about this farm, but of the farming in general in the area'

With a soft husky laugh that reverberates and ripples Nako smiles at the group she has managed to find herself with, "Yes, but it is hard to say one way or the other until we are actually there." She looks around the fields as they pass through them and looks thoughtful, "My people are not farmers, in general, at least my family was not. I do not know how many it would take to work these lands." At Alba's comment about thinking enemies, "They certainly do offer a wider range of possible challenges, though there is something to be said for unthinking brutes with animal cunning and ferocity as an opponent. Everything is so much simpler..."

From afar, Alba nodnod.

"If the denizens were attacked by predators, the produce cargo may still be intact," MAC-B1G advises another point as they step through the fields.

"Unless the predators are great indeed," Alba murmurs, mask turning skyward, "it is likely that the workers would drive them away. Losses, perhaps, but survivors also. Unless it was the creatures that pull the food which were killed, it should still have reached the merchant. Thus... either the foe shall be a horrible one that farmers would not wish to chance fighting, or a cunning one that has raided and burned. Soon, we shall know."

The farmhouse, a large building, and what looks like a barn, a silo, and a bunkhouse can be seen over the rise. Everything looks quiet from here.

Pelka pulls a large bulky deathray out of a case on the side of his bandolier (larger but still too small to hold the weapon were it not enchanted). He keeps this held ready in both hands, where he can quickly raise it to his shoulder to aim and fire. "Well - who wants to go in first?" he calls cheerfully.

MAC-B1G scans ahead as the structures come into view. "Assessment: Visual inspection reveals structures intact. No immediate threats nor denizens detected." It continues forward. Their task and directive are to determine the cause for the delay in shipment and status of location. The construct has no cause to delay.

"We should scout the whole surrounding before barging in. It could be the farmers are already dead, and it is a trap for more valuable prey, such as merchants looking for their shipment." Nako opines, but she certainly isn't going to try and stop the war golem. "Wise thinking, this," Alba agrees, "but we are not a band skilled in silence. In pairs, then, circle in opposite directions, and speak of what was seen on the far side."

Pelka looks between the war golem and Nako. "That sounds like a good idea," he admits. "If we can scout before he gets to the door maybe..." Pelka begins to circle around the building so that he can see it from other sides and perhaps approach it from the opposite side. He hustles slightly, most of his attention on the building rather than where he's going.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "so we are looking around the buildings?" <OOC> Nako is, would be sneaky but seems moot so far :)

Alba flits up behind Mac, tap-tap-tapping the points of her finger-blades on the construct's head. "You. To the right. We scout first, then bring mayhem."

<OOC> Alba nods, the suggestion is to split into pairs, circle around the farm, and discuss what we see on the back side when we meet up. <OOC> Tiasa says, "okay everyone pose doing that, and give me perception checks."

Nako nods to Alba and Pelka then turns to head around to the left with Pelka so that Alba and MAC can go to the right. She isn't exactly a loud crashy type herself but, it's not like she is scouting by herself and so she keeps pace with the Egalrin. More important is what she can see, smell, discover before meeting up with the others, or at least Alba, on the other side of the farm buildings...

GAME: Nako rolls perception: (12)+8: 20 GAME: Pelka rolls perception: (9)+10: 19

"Directive acknowledged," MAC-B1G replies and alters course appropriately. It is certainly one not skilled in quiet as it tromps along beside the floating one.

GAME: MAC-B1G rolls perception: (20)+8: 28 GAME: Alba rolls perception: (12)+7: 19 <OOC> Tiasa says, "go ahead and keep posing as you make it around and meet back up"

Pelka slows up for long enough for Nako to catch up to him and then very soon he has to hurry to keep up with her. "I don't see anything," he whispers loudly as they meet up with the others.

MAC-B1G's faceplate pans perpendicular to its arc of travel, focusing primarily upon the interior of the arc where the farmstead structures lie, but not exclusively. The outer perimeter and its reconaissance taskmember are also monitored. In time, it completes the initial survey and arrives on the far side. While not silent, neither is its plodding gait slow.

Alba touches down, slinking ahead of the golem as she searches for signs of movement, damage, or anything else that might give a clue to the situation.

Nako won't abandon Pelka, even if her gait is longer, since that defeats the purpose of splitting off into pairs. She tries to keep an eye and ear out for anything out of the ordinary, any signs of ambush, or even any signs of murderous brigands or just baddies with a penchance for human flesh. "Anything out of the ordinary?" She asks, "Besides the lack of farmers and workers."

By the time that you all get together you can see that there were signs of fighting, occasionally blood trails, and damaged and trampled ground. THe barn is open so looks pretty empty. There did see to be noises from inside the farmhouse.

"This unit observed distrubed ground indicative of combat, as well as blood residue," the construct turns its torso to lift one manipulator and gesture in indication of the mentioned areas noted, "there, 2.35 meters east of the large fauna storage structure and there, 5.82 meters south of the residential structure."

"Inside, sounds," Alba mutters. "Bandits, now, more likely... 'Ware how you aim your weapons," she says, mask turning to the Artificers, "if there are yet living farmers, their home we shall be fighting within."

Nako nods and then thumps MAC's shoulder with one hand, "Come, now it is time for glorious combat." And she gives a tusky grin before she starts for the nearest door to where the sounds were coming from. Of course unarmored she might outdistance the actual heavier armored people, maybe, maybe not.

Pelka puts away his deathray and then flexes his gauntleted fists. A thought seems to occur to him and he digs in a bag for a large round disc. He reaches over his choulder, about to fasten it on his own back before pausing and looking around. "Does anyone else need this...?" he offers. "It's...well, it's a shield. Sort of."

"Directive acknowledge," MAC-B1G confirms. "This unit will minimize collateral structural damage." It then begins a plodding march towards the inside where the sounds were indicated by unit designate Alba. "This unit is fully combat ready," is noted to both units Nako and Pelka.

The closer one gets to the farmhouse there is scratching that can be heard. The door hangs on its hinges but it is dark inside.

Slipping the husk of a beetle smelling of some foul, sharp treatment from her pouch, Alba pushes her mask up just enough to reveal her mouth. "Defenses enough I have," she murmurs around a wry smile, then pops the dead bug into her mouth. A moment's horrible, dry crunching, and a shimmering approximation of body armor, all chitinous lumps and spikes, ripples into being around her. "Hope that the farmers live, and slaughter any who made it otherwise," she mutters, sucking at a leg stuck between two teeth.

"The chances of the farmers living grows highly unlikely." Nako says as she approaches the door that is hanging off it's hinges, and with the sounds of scratching coming from within, "More likely whatever has feasted upon them now makes a nest we must cleanse." The jet black skinned oruch is clearly chomping at the bit to get in there, darkness, not a bother for her for obvious reasons. But she waits, tempering her building desire for battle with discipline.

"Initializing shield generators," the construct states reaching up a manipulator to press a gemstone control stud embedded in its torso. A shimmering field of force springs into existence around it. "Shields online." It scans into the dark interior briefly before steppiong inside.

Alba slips in first, curling a long black pigtail around one of her finger blades. Her mask orients on the walking dead surrounding the trapdoor, and a disappointed huff can be heard from behind the faceless plane of carved bone. "Some live, at least," she mutters, as a ripple of blue-black miasma coils down the length of the blade, infusing her hair with a dark rime of frost. Slipping to the side, she turns, the pigtail lashing of its own will and spiking outward, far farther than it should naturally be allowed to... but though the frost taps the creature's shoulder, it seems to have no effect.

One of the creatures moves forward to attack Alba who is the closest, but doesn't hit.

There are sounds from the trapdoor, "hello?" someone calls after hearing the fighting.

Nako hmphs as the last one falls, flicking her hands and clean of any detritus left over from the fight as best she can and checking her nails, "Hardly a tough fight. One would think farmers, enough to fill a bunkhouse, would be able to handle these." She then looks towards the voice, "There are survivors. I should not be close lest they think more raiders and enemies." And that said, Nako moves away from the trap door, and faces outside the building by the broken door leading out.

Pelka peers down at the fallen monsters. "I think we know what happened to the farmers," he says. Then he cocks his head to the side, then peers at the trapdoor. "Yes, hello!" he calls back. "Are you the farmers? Or more undead? Because if you're more undead, we're not opening the door!"

MAC-B1G studies the remains of the now completely dead. "Data indicates that these negative-empowered creatures inflict deleterious consequences to mortal beings via contact."

Alba crouches near the trapdoor, eyeslits trained upon the opening portal. "How hurt? How many?"

Nako hmmms from where she stands by the doorway, half-looking over her shoulder towards MAC, "Do you know if those harmed by it turn? I have heard stories of undead making more undead in such fashion." She looks pointedly towards where the trapdoor is opening.

There is an older man coming up, human, "About five, the others were killed. It took us by suprised, turned two of my farmhands." he coughs a few times as he climbs the rest of the way up, looking weak and drained, the rest come up, two other adults and two kids. All are cut up and look almost barely alive.

Pelka gives a start. His eyes open even wider than they normally are "Really?" He thinks about what Nako said about undead making more undead. "What was 'it' exactly?" He peers down at the remains of the undread they took down earlier, looking for one that looks somehow different than the others.

At the sight of wounded and heartsick children, Alba's hackles rise. "Are there more?" she says, a growing fury audible in her voice. "Point me to them, that I may grind their heads to paste for daring to harm a child." As the children reach the top of the ladder, her hair snakes out, looping around chests and under arms to lift them out with a sort of creepy tenderness. "We shall help you to the nearest town, once our task is done."

"It is probably that the negative energy is infectious," the construct extrapolates, "but it would require destruction of the natural empowering force to allow suffusion of the corporeal shell." Its faceplate and receptors turn towards the survivors. "Query: Is the orginal attacket among the neutralized threats?" A manipulator indicates the trio of re-inanimated remains.

The older man shakes his head, "No, Marcus and Thad only became like it was after it killed them." He shakes his head, "It was too late to do anything, we barely made it to the cellar. Can you help us to the city?"

Nako counts on her fingers, "If it changed two, and there are three here. Chances are good we took it out as well yes?" She looks at the torn up corpses, of animated corpses, "Dark magic." And she wrinkles her flat nose into a snarl, spits off to the side as if warding off magic, or maybe just out of disgust for the idea. "I would hope if such a fate befell me I would be destroyed like this."

Nako adds, "I see no reason not to escort them to city, we are going back yes? With Merchants goods?"

"Marcus," Alba repeats, "Thad, it. Hn. Three names, three bodies." Gathering the children to her, unless of course someone protests, she nods in answer to Nako's suggestion. "Blankets we will need, and food beyond that which I may find upon the way, but to see you safely to the City... Mn. This, we may do."

MAC-B1G concurs with the stated consensus to date. "Affirmative. They will accompany the taskforce as it transports the wares to the city. Query: Location and status of goods?"

Pelka nods in agreement. "While I'm happy that all of you...ah, most of you, survived, we also need to take back the harvest." He considers and then adds, "I'm sure there will be many hungry mouths in Alexandria otherwise." He has no idea if it's true but he figures it might sound good to others.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "everyone ready for wrap up?" <OOC> Nako says, "si" <OOC> Alba says, "Yas."
