Everything's Just Vine

Kore has arrived.

Itzpapalotl has arrived.

"I dunno what's in there but whatever it is it's weird and pissed off," says the guardsman as he stares at the household. A family had returend to their home only to never go inside on account of the strange thrashing and crashing sounds coming from the interior of the affluent looking home in the middle of this upper trade district's more residential areas.

The guard is well paid, but not paid well enough to take the enormous risk of going into face 'unknown horrible monster potentially'. This is where you come in.

Amythyst says, "Of course it's pissed off, otherwise youw ouldn't call us." She says with a roll of her eyes. "Kind of the job description, you know?""

Erakirak tilts his head from side to side, an Egalrin gesture indicating acknowledgment. He doesn't think much of the guard for handing off his responsibilities like this, but then, he doesn't think much of humans at the best of times. And the guard's cowardice is entirely to his benefit. He checks the ground around the wealthy building to see if any Thing has left discernable tracks.

Iskandar tugs a cestus over his hand. He slips his great bow off of his back and over his head, then readies an arrow. "Is there anyone - or anything - inside that we /shouldn't/ smash...?" he inquires.

GAME: Erakirak rolls survival: (18)+5: 23

"Maybe it isn't a monster!" The curious voice comes from near the back of the Guild group. The owner of said voice, a slightly taller than average Traveler, peers towards the open door and the sounds coming from within.

"They could have a very large dog! Or maybe they kept one of their relatives locked in the basement and they finally got out! Now they want us to put them down before their secrets are out!" He sounds so hopeful.

A pause. He takes a breath.

"Master Ironeye would tell me I read too many books. But they are /good/ books!" He adds after a moments though. "Oh oh! I'm Keldin by the way! Master Ironeye says I should introduce myself before going into potentially deadly situations with people. So I did!" Pause. "Hi!"

"That was the first thing I thought," replies the guardsman to Keldin. He sighs.

"...only they don't own a dog. Or a cat. Or anyhthing, actually. So... good luck, huh? Ha ha ha!" Nervous laughter. I, who am sending you to die, salute you! And so on. Sorta.

"I have a feeling if it's a very large dog, it's the kind with two heads and a slobbering maw and rows of razor-sharp teeth. Because otherwise, they wouldn't have called a band of worthies such as ourselves, no?" Vaalyun says, with a grin, "So, do we need to kick in the door, or are you going to open it for us? And... is the consensus that we have no idea at all what's in there?"

Erakirak stares at the guardsman for awhile, as though seriously considering that he might be the larger threat. "The family is out. No innocents in the house, then." His voice is high-pitched, sharp, punctuated by squeaks and trills and whistles but perfectly understandable.

GAME: Erakirak rolls survival: (15)+5: 20

"Well I had little else to do today, I might as well hop in and see what sort of bizarre animale you grounnd dwellers think to make into pets." Desdemona says with a smirk. She's been lingering in the back of the group, keeping her eye on the house and what might be lurking with in. Hearing that the family is out she nods. "Well lets hope that they're not too attached to their furniture, I have a feeling it'll get messy in there."

Erakirak looks around and says to the giant "I suggest you open the door, we back you up, yes?"

He draws his bow and nocks an arrow, just to be ready.

Iskandar beams. "Yes! A wonderful idea!" He shifts his own bow to hold with one hand and then reaches for the door to try and fling it open.

GAME: Vaalyun refreshes spells.

Crashthud.

Something just happened on what is likely the second floor of that home, judging by the way things sounded.

GAME: Amythyst refreshes spells.

Amythyst looks up. "Well...maybe we should take a look at the second floor.....what do you guys think?"

GAME: Vaalyun casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 4 DC: 14

"Oh, absolutely. Maybe before whatever it is does more damage to the house than we would." Vaalyun says, before closing his eyes and muttering a prayer. "Nothing odd out here. Let's go explore." He heads for the door, hefting his shield.

Erakirak draws and pulls, his bow swinging in the direction of the noise -- which is to say, the open door -- at the first sound as though it had a mind of its own. Then he relaxes and waves his head in agreement. "Yes. Let us enter and see what there is to see." He seems at once irritated and relieved by Vaalyun's entry, but follows him just the same.

GAME: Keldin refreshes spells.

Peering towards the door and the others there Keldin shifts his hand into a pocket, there pulling out an odd whirling collection of cogs and gears that seems to be glowing with a faint green light. This he tosses from hand to hand, just idly fidgeting as the door swings open and his wide eyes peer into the darkness.

"I'm totally betting on locked up sibling..."

Amythyst says, "Well....we can go and find out....before a wall is exploded."

"What odds are you giving?" the Egalrin asks Keldin, curiously.

The door is indeed unlocked.

It opens.

It's not like this is a dungeon or anything. You push inside the house and it defintiely looks like something both weird and pissed off was here. The walls have some nice gouges in them and the furniture is flipped over here and there. The itnerior is nothing out of the ordinary at the moment, though, for an upper-class, more affluent Alexandrian family.

Erakirak goes to the gouged wall and examines the gouges and any footprints, fur, or other marks left behind, trying to identify the creature.

They're just gouges. There's several of them all along the wall, but at the moment, not enough to draw on the nature of the creature.

"Upstairs, then." Rak looks disappointed.

Iskandar peers at some of the gouges for a brief moment. Then he moves on so as not to block any of the others from entering. His gaze is drawn repeatedly to the ceiling, remembering the sounds they heard earlier from upstairs. After a moment a thought seems to come to him. "If anyone need to do anything to prepare...I'm sure it won't be long now until we have to fight."

"...woah. This is a nice place! Way nicer than where I'm staying! Is that hardwood panel--well I guess it was hardwood paneling. I mean the gouges kinda ruin the aesthetic." Keldin is 'whispering' as he gives his little monologue. He's very bad at whispering though.

"...oh maybe they went with a 'savage worlds' aesthetic and that was already there!" A pause. "...no. That wouldn't make much sense..." A pause again before he looks back up as Iskandar says something about fighting. "Oh a battle! I love those! They let me test things!"

Vaalyun takes his mace into his hand, looking over his shoulder with a grim laugh, "Upstairs it is." He heads for the stairs, turning sideways so his big shield leads the way. His bad leg makes it hard, so it's one step at a time. Besides, you don't sprint up the stairs in armor at his age!

Erakirak follows the human meat-shield, bow at the ready.

Amythyst says, "Just don't break the floor unless it starts to first......" She says following Vaalyun in."

Iskandar trails after the others, lowering his bow so that it points down. He doesn't quite trust himself in these cramped and crowded surroundings to not accidentally shoot a party member. "The suspense is killing me," he admits. "What could it be?"

GAME: Erakirak rolls weapon3: (9)+7: 16

"Oh I'm sure we'll find out when it leaps out and tries to eat our squishy bits!" Keldin says cheerfully as he slips away the odd glowing device and pulls out something else. It looks like a short and somewhat blunt dagger. But there are too many electrodes and gears attached to make it a proper weapon. There /is/ little sparks of electricity that are thrown off as he adjusts things.

"Oh! Maybe it'll be one of those house-maggots!"

He's full of cheerful things.

"Do you think it'll be upstairs?"

A pause. "We should check upstairs!"

Upstairs, then, each of you moving up in turn.

It's gone quiet for the moment.

When you reach the second floor, you see a hallway to your left with a bunch of doors on either side of it. The bedrooms, it seems.

On the other side is an expansive family room, with tables and chairs and half-completed board games...

...all of which are turned over and scattered by... something. There are also more wall-puncture marks here in similar patterns and arrangements to downstairs.

Desdemona notes that this is a nice place, far better than the inn's she's been staying in since she got here. However there is little time to appriciate the decor, because the claw marks on the wall show that they are going to have large animal problems. "I don't care what it is, so long as it isn't a fungus dragon, I hear those are the worst. You can't get the mold smell out of your clothing, you just have to burn it, and I am partial to the clothing I am wearing." Despite her jesting, Desdemona is keeping her eyes open, and her she pulls her sword out to be ready for what ever beastie it may be.

"Whatever it is," says Rak, "it does _not_ like walls." It's very hard to tell if he is serious.

Iskandar glances around. "This is quite a nice house," he remarks in a light tone. Before turning towards the first door and reaching for it. He glances back to see if everyone seems ready before opening...

Amythyst makes her way upstairs and slows as she gets her eyes over the floor. "Yeah, very nice house. So...what's wrecking it?"

Vaalyun rests his mace on his shoulder in a ready position as he looks towards the family room, "Here, monster, monster, monster..." he says, with a little curl of his lip that makes his scar curl up. "The real surprise here is that what's wrecking it isn't /us/. At least, not yet."

"Oh! Master Ironeye made a golem one time that didn't like walls either! Maybe its a runaway golem!" A pause from Keldin. "But it's not one that I know. Not enough dwarven cursing involved I think." A pause again before he raises his voice a bit. "Hey monster! Are you a golem!"

...he's helping.

.....and about that time, something is reaching through one of the holes in the wall to GRAB KELDIN.

It's some kind of thorny vine!

...followed by more vines from more holes.

He looks down as one of the vines he was ripping at hits him in the chest. Noting a hole there in the armor. Blood coming from said hole.

"...well. That is a thing..."

...and he keels right over, the armor loosing its glow as he falls.

Hey, good news!

GAME: Vaalyun rolls 1d4+2: (2)+2: 4

Once the last vine is dead, Vaalyun makes his way over to the unconscious Keldin. He drops to one knee, putting down his mace and taking his holy symbol of a blue rose. He touches it to the injured artificer, and healing energy stabilizes him and staunches the bleeding. Then the Althean reaches for the healing kit attached beneath his out robe. "Well, you're a bit of a mess, aren't you..." he says, with a droll smile.

Keldin opens one eye. Then the other eye. Then glances down at the hole in his armor. Then, when he grins back up towards Vaal he nods once. "Well I'm always a bit of a mess! So it's a bit hard to gage how much worse I am now!"

Iskandar crowds around Keldin as well, tugging off his cestus and opening and closing the fingers of that hand. "Well fought!" he says encouragingly. "I'm sure that will leave a glorious battle scar!"
