  • Title: Evacuate This, part 2
  • Emitter: Whirlpool
  • Characters: Dirk, Eztli, Gramarys, Magpie, Nemori, Robert, Jay
  • Place: Alexandrian Villages
  • Time: Thursday, June 09, 2022, 9:28 PM
  • Summary: There is a running problem that many of the villages that need to be evacuated have stubborn folk unwilling to leave until it was too late. In this case, an aging Oruch who would not leave without a fight. So they Fight!

Previously

When last we left off ya'll we're trying to convince Gurocco, the recalcitrant orc artificer, to go with you to evacuate. He declined unless you beat him in a fight.

And then Magpie said what he did to his lawn (covered in suspicious mounds) was goblin-y.

He took exception.

He doesn't want to leave his mine. Oruch-alcum is in high demand.

Now

Gorucco rolls his eyes at Magpie, then steadies himself carefully in the grease that's been thrown under him. "Right, then! Time to call in the reinforcements! Seven on one isn't fair, is it?"

He grins, then holds up his hand and presses a button concealed in his palm.

Immediately, three of the mounds spotted by Magpie erupt in a spray of dirt as constructs begin to crawl out of the earth. They are not goblins. Gurocco is giving Magpie a meaningful look at this revelation. He wants her to know: not gobliny constructs. See?

In any event, the constructs are crawling out of the earth. Their designs are more like animate chess pieces than anything else, a pawn like construction holding a sword and a shield, a vaguely knight-like humanoid with a halberd, and a vaguely bishop-like constructs with a staff.

<OOC> Dirk will shoot thie Bishop.
GAME: Dirk rolls ranged: (18)+7: 25
GAME: Dirk rolls 1d12: (1): 1

Dirk can only stare in slack-jawed shock as the constructs start whirring to life. He slaps a hand to his face, dragging it down slowly. "Och, this is gettin' tae be -ridiculous-," he grumbles. He plants his feet and lifts his thunderbelcher to his shoulder. The bishop-construct looks like a likely target. It's probably some kind of mechanical spell-flinger, so it needs to go first. He pulls back on the trigger. CHK-BOOM! The bullet PYANGs off the construct's plating, barely leaving a dent. "Oh, fuck -you-!" he growls, racking his rifle.

<OOC> Nemori will cast spiritual weapon on the bishop, while moving behind Robert.
GAME: Nemori spends ONE use of FAERIE FIRE.
GAME: Nemori casts Spiritual Weapon. Caster Level: 4 DC: 15
GAME: Nemori rolls 1d20+3+3: (13)+3+3: 19
GAME: Nemori rolls 1d8+1: (8)+1: 9

Nemori does not look.. impressed. Not regarding the constructs. She's actually fairly (secretly) impressed about those.. she may have to discuss those with Jay and Robert later. No, she's not impressed that once again she is involved in trying to extract someone who is clearly INSANE in the wake of an undead invasion. "Orcs," she says, almost wanting to spit. Instead, she grasps a token inside her pocket while she draws her rapier with her other hand, then gestures vaguely behind the clockwork bishop to complete her incantation as she sidesteps to get Robert firmly between her and anything that might hit her.

GAME: Eztli casts Enlarge Person. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15
<OOC> Eztli says, "Robert is big now"
<OOC> Nemori says, "Don't forget enlarge person is a 1 round cast :("
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "You begin casting enlarge person. It will complete next round. :)"
<OOC> Robert says, "She cast it last round."
<OOC> Eztli says, "Um, I'm going to move back as far as I can manage, and I'll magic missile the staff wielding construct"
GAME: Eztli rolls 2d4+2: (6)+2: 8

The small makari was busy focusing on the spell she was casting, though she does stop to look at the Oruch. "I really hope you put those mines in place recently, and you didn't have explosives sitting in your yard for children and people to run over an blow up." She sighs right as she finishes weaving the magics which cause Robert to glow bright orange for a moment, almost a flaming effigy of him that grows and grows until it vanishes in a puff of smoke, leaving just Robert, but much taller. "Ah, those aren't mines. That's good, and perhaps that is fair, but we really don't need to spend more time on this than possible."

That being said, she should attempt to clear things up so the rest of her allies could focus on the oruch. She didn't have much in the way of non lethal magics anyways, and she flicks a clawed finger at the clerical looking machine, sending a pair of orange colored bolts to thud into the artifice.

<OOC> Robert says, "Full attack. Enlarge is a wash on attack rolls. Sparring with the Orcificer, "PA, bludgeoner."
GAME: Robert rolls weapon11-1: (2)+9+-1: 10
GAME: Robert rolls weapon12-1: (6)+9+-1: 14
<OOC> Robert says, "I do have reach now,Whirl, in case anything moves to provoke an AoO. Since I'm bigguns."

The titan armor (and cerenzan inside) swells up and out, sabatons forcing the earth and haphazardly-placed cobblestones to sink beneath its considerable weight. The humming around the artifice continues to rise in volume and pitch as the glow increases from the crystals set into it.

Giant-sized (it's just more to love!) now, Bob makes two lumbering swipes at the similarly-adorned oruch man. Neither blow lands and the distant echo of the man's voice can be heard bouncing around inside the helmet, grumbling about joints and actuators.

<OOC> Jay says, "I shall arrive! aaaaaand.... throw bolas and hope to trip the Oruch?"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "He's in grease so that's a good idea."
GAME: Jay rolls weapon2: (5)+8: 13
GAME: Jay rolls cmb: (4)+4: 8
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "He swats away the bola, yes, but looks pleased with the effort."
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Big thumbs up!"

"Bob! Bob! Hey Bob! There you are!" A sudden cawing, a wild flapping of feathers and a chiaroscuro of black, white and blue announce the arrival of Integrity C Truefeather, esquire. The 'C' is for confusion.

Who would have thought it would be possible to get lost in Vieshance, a little town of not more than a hundred people, but the Egalrin has found a way. Or lost his way, then found it again. It helps that the person he is seeking is giant sized, and visible from almost everywhere.

"Oh... hi Nemori..." The bluejay says cautiously, getting closer to the group. A perceptive one, he immediately assesses what the artificer and orcificer are up to.

"You're fighting? We're supposed to be evacuating!" He pulls a pair of bolas off his belt and whips them at the elderly oruch's legs. They miss completely, bouncing in among the mines. He's helping.

<OOC> Magpie says, "Are any of the constructs in the Grease I laid?"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Nope, just the oruch at this time."
<OOC> Magpie says, "How many of them would be in the cone of a Burning Hands?"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "None, they're spread out."
<OOC> Magpie: OKAY SO. Protoplasm on the Knight. Ranged attack that does a Tanglefoot effect, plus 1 acid damage per round.
GAME: Magpie rolls ranged: (10)+4: 14 (Ranged touch)
<OOC> Magpie says, "DC 15 Strength check to keep from being glued to the floor."
<OOC> Magpie says, "Reflex."
<OOC> Magpie says, "Also -2 attack, -4 Dex, and if it makes the save, half speed."

"UUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH," Magpie opines, exactly in the style of a rubber-armed teenager. "Okay *fine,* they're not *gobliny,* but seriously Jay's right." Digging deep into her throat, Magpie cups her hands and seems to spit into them, producing a faintly yellow-green ball of jellylike magical essence, which she winds back and hurls against the Knight construct. The acid smokes and sizzles as it settles against the construct's body, securely gluing it to the ground.

<OOC> Gramarye says, "Super duper sorry, I was RL'd briefly. I'm here to take my turn after Maggie's."
GAME: Gramarye casts Magic Missile. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15, "Magic Missile the Bishop."
GAME: Gramarye rolls 2d4+2: (5)+2: 7

Gramarye's eyes are still red, which is an odd thing to encounter in contrast to Gramarye's previous declaration of 'subdue the enemy until enemy surrenders'. But the tall bronze 'doll' construct still has her hands raised in spellcasting position.

Her hands and head move lightning fast to the direction of the bishop that's risen. "Additional enemy detected. Classifying as: ACCEPTABLE TARGET FOR LETHAL ELIMINATION." Her pleasant medium female voice turns to a deep tone.

"Activating magic missile. Lock-on..." More eldritch incantations, and arcane darts blast out of her hands to sink into the Bishop's form.

"Arcane ordnance distributed," Gramarye states, same as before. "Target still remains. Objective modified: seek surrender of organic lifeform, seek surrender and/or destruction of inorganic forms."

<OOC> Whirlpool says, "He's OFFENDED."

<OOC> Nemori says, "immediate action to escape artist check with a bonus +8."
GAME: Magpie rolls escape artist+8: (19)+2+8: 29

The Bishop's attention goes to Robert. Despite the damage it's taken so far, a bit sparking from exposed mechanical bits, it's blast solidly slams into the giant.

The pawn charges towards Gramary, hoping to close in on her, and draws a sharp rebuke from the giant in the process. The knight, entangled, tries to free itself, but with a lot of grinding and whirring seems unable.

"Gobliny, huh? Let's see how you like *this*." The old oruch strides through the grease, happy as can be, and grabs Magpie .... but loses his grip on them entirely as they slip through his fingers like they were never there. He raises his arms as if to hurl her towards Robert and then belatedly realizes she's not there any more.

"Oh, you ..."

<OOC> Dirk says, "Swift action to reload, then firing another shot at the Bishop, using Deadly Aim."
GAME: Dirk rolls Ranged-1: (9)+7+-1: 15
GAME: Dirk rolls 1d12+2: (9)+2: 11

Dirk scowls dourly, lifting his rifle to his shoulder. Drawing his bead, he draws a deep breath and lets it out. CHK-BOOM! The shot PTOWs off the Bishop, this time sending a spray of sparks from the contraption's mechanical innards. "Hah! Cheap workmanship!" he growls with a savage grin.

<OOC> Nemori says, "Whirl, is Guacamole close enough for Robert to full attack this turn?"
<OOC> Jay says, "Guiseppe!"
<OOC> Jay says, "Guggenheim!"
<OOC> Nemori says, "Guillermo?"
<OOC> Magpie says, "Gabagul!"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "I'd say getting there, Nemori"
<OOC> Nemori says, "I'm not sure what getting there means."
<OOC> Nemori says, "Sorry. Whether Robert can full attack this turn may influence my action."
<OOC> Robert can 5' and has reach if that helps. Hopefully we're not all spread out THAT far.
GAME: Nemori rolls 1d20+3+3: (9)+3+3: 15, "In the meantime, the spiritual weapon continues to attack the Bishop."
GAME: Nemori rolls 1d8+1: (2)+1: 3
GAME: Nemori spends ONE use of BIT OF LUCK., "Ah. Either way, going to use Bit of Luck on Robert."
<OOC> Nemori says, "oh, 5' step back to move further away from the hostiles."

Nemori's summoned rapier continues to thrust at the Bishop construct, its pale, translucent sunrise coloured form dancing behind it as though wielded by an unseen dancer. Nemori herself pays it no mind, instead touching her token to Robert's hip with a prayer before stepping backwards, further away from potential harm.

As she steps back, Nemori turns her face towards Jay. Her eyes flash.. relief at seeing him? Condemnation at him for not being here sooner? Maybe both? Her words lend no further clue to which, however, as she says instead, "I know! This orc is more a fool than those dwarfs! And we are more the fools for trying to get him out of here!"

<OOC> Eztli says, "I'm going to spice it up this turn, and cast magic missile on the bishop"
GAME: Eztli casts Magic Missile. Caster Level: DC:
GAME: Eztli rolls 2d4+2: (6)+2: 8

Eztli is happy to stay back for the time being, with others taking the attention of the robots. "Sorry Robert, that makes you a bigger target, but I hope it's helping, at least!" The small makari shouts, flicking her hand in the direction of the bishop again, with a pair of orange bolts smacking into the metal. "Please fall, we really do need to be going. This Oruch won't leave until we beat him in combat, mister Truefeather!"

<OOC> Robert says, "5' (if need) and full attack the oruch. PA again, bludgeoner again."

GAME: Robert rolls 2d6+6+2: (5)+6+2: 13
<OOC> Robert says, "Non-lethal to the oruch. Cuz Bludgeoner."

"IT'S GOOD THINKING!" Bob booms from within his helmet, powerful lungs making the metal dome vibrate. Turning impossibly fast for something so large, the cerenzan's blue-eyes search out the oruch artificer bearing down on Magpie. The internals of the armor seem ready to hitch again but a bit of luck has the gear teeth settle and hoses unclog.

Already oversized, the titanic fists made even bigger by the makari magics whoosh in to slam and dent the ancient's orcs impressive artifice. Metal-on-metal clangs as Bob presses forward.

"ANYTIME YOU'RE READY TO GO, MISTER GUROCCO..!"

<OOC> Jay says, "I'll get in his way and distract him and take the AOO instead of Magpie, using bluff"
GAME: Jay rolls bluff: (17)+7: 24
GAME: Whirlpool rolls 1d20+8: (9)+8: 17

"What?" Jay squawks at Eztli, "We have to beat him? An Orc?"

He immediately flaps in front of the orcifier, interposing himself between the man and the Magpie. He's a big target, bright and loud. Immediately he starts filibusterering.

"What are the rules? Who is the judge? How many combatants against an oruch does it take to make a fair fight? She's tiny and you're going after her, when you've got the big man to deal with?"

He points, "And those chess pieces! Is this how orcs play chess? Are they part of the fight? Is it to first blood? Can they bleed?

The l-eagal egalrin finishes with, "All parties aren't in agreement on this. You don't want to trigger a lengthy arbitration! I motion to reconvene at a safer venue and sort out acceptable rules for all involved!"

<OOC> Gramarye says, "I'm gonna take 5 steps back. And I'm gonna magic missile the pawn."
GAME: Gramarye casts Magic Missile. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15
GAME: Gramarye rolls 2d4+2: (5)+2: 7

Gramarye's crimson eyes look at the pawn in front of her. "Additional enemy detected. Classifying as: ACCEPTABLE TARGET FOR LETHAL ELIMINATION. Reason: SELF-DEFENSE."

She gracefully, but mechanically, hops backwards a few feet. "Activating magic missile. Lock-on..." she intones mid-air, and she lands as the arcane darts blast into the pawn in front of her.

"Arcane ordnance distributed. Target still remains. Process is continuing."

<OOC> Magpie says, "Okay! With a flapping birdman in his face, I'm'a backstep 20', and glue down the Pawn."
GAME: Magpie rolls ranged: (5)+4: 9
<OOC> Magpie says, "Or not. Ah well!"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Alas, that is not a hit on the pawn :)"
<OOC> Magpie says, "Yeah but I'm also trying not to hurt anything that'll scream. XD"

"WOOB WOOB WOOB WOOB WOOB!" Magpie crows as she slips out of the Oruch's grasp. Dancing out of arm's reach, she gathers up another ball of magic to fling at the pawn... where it splatters against the walk.

"Okay seriously that was a bad throw but THESE THINGS COULD BE PROTECTING THE REFUGEES!"

GAME: Whirlpool rolls 1d20+6: (3)+6: 9
GAME: Whirlpool rolls 1d8+4: (1)+4: 5

"Unfortunately not," says Gurocco to Magpie, "Their powersource is immobile. Gonna leave 'em behind as a surprise for any undead that wander in, though!"

He then throws himself into Robert. Slams right into him. Gut. He's hurting, yeah, after those blows that left dents in his armor and his attempt to slam into him was definitely warranted as a result, but ... no one moves. He looks up at Robert. Sighs.

"Well, damn," he grumbles. He did pretty good, all things considered, but it just wasn't enough to knock him over.

The pawn slashes at Gramarye and does slam into her with the flat of its blade. Non-lethal mode is apparently engaged. The bishop's energy bolts fly past Jay, and the Knight is still ... glued to the ground.

<OOC> Dirk says, "Gonna shoot the Bishop again. Using Deadly Aim, obvs."

<OOC> Robert says, "So 12 if normal hit. 40 if crit."
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Bishop is disabled. :)"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "After that big hit? Absolutely disabled."

Dirk racks his rifle, another gem on his bandolier winking out. He brings the weapon up to his shoulder, peering down the barrel. He lets himself go into total focus, drawing a deep breath as he draws his bead. He pulls back on the trigger. CHK-BOOM! The bullet slams straight into the Bishop construct's center mass. There's a hideous screeching and squealing of gears as its motivators sieze up. The construct shudders for a moment, a gout of oily black smoke puffing from its frame as it slowly slumps over with a soft little whining 'beeewwwww....p'. Dirk lets loose a bark of laughter. "Want me tae keep goin', ye overgrown rustbucket?" he growls. "I can do this -all bloody day-, ye sod!"

GAME: Nemori casts Murderous Command. Caster Level: 4 DC: 14
GAME: Whirlpool rolls 1d20+4: (2)+4: 6 (Gurocco Will - Fail)

Nemori spares a thought to direct the floating rapier, and it moves with haste to attack another of the oruch's construct allies. Then she turns her attention on Gurocco. "Your toys are failing you, Gurocco! It is time to punsish them!" She holds her token forward, the flame of Ceinara visible on one side, and her voice carries the weight of extra power behind it.

<OOC> Robert says, "See if I can sleepy-times the oruch. Same deal. Will 5' into flank with Jay if I can."

<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Rober takes out the old orc!"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Disables his armor :)"

Bob takes a half-step back when the other artificer attempts to tackle him. The grunt sounds like an ogre waking up at the back of a cave. "WE'RE WASTING DAYLIGHT, MASTER GUROCCO," complains the cerenzan.

A bit bewildered by the whole process (and, honestly, wanting an opportunity to inspect the clockworks he realizes won't come), Bob lifts a knee to blast the half-grappling oruch in the side. Then he hoists the man bodily, rolls him ass-over-teakettle, and lets the whole assemblage of veteran and classic carapace fall with a crash to the ground.

Gurocco doesn't rise but issues a dazed groan to provide proof of life. One of the dented and dirt-stained genouillere sways as the old timer makes an effort to maintain consciousness.

Silently, Nemori applauds.

"..ngngggh," Gurocco groans from his new position on the ground. He's definitely not dead, but his armor is disabled and he's not exactly thrilled by the injuries. He's dazed, for sure, from the impact. "...not ... so ... advanced ... now, is it?" he manages to say after he's had a moment to recover from the impact. His pawns stop functioning with his armor disabled for the moment.

"There! You've been thrown! You're defeated. We can go before the wights arrive!" Jay hops up and down, looking around, at Eztli, at Magpie, at his bolas... his precious MITHRIL hunting bolas from his aerie, sitting in the oruch's field. "You said there were mines, not mines? Can I go pick those up without exploding?"

"Woo!" Magpie cheers, jumping up and thrusting a tiny fist into the air. "Good job, Giga-Dad! Now we can stop screwing around and get gone! What?" Magpie pauses, turning to blink owlishly at Jay for a moment. "Oh yeah no it wasn't mines apparently, just those robots. Get your stuff, and hey... Thanks a lot. That was real nice, people don't usually ask for punches instead of me!"

<OOC> Magpie says, "Robert I'm sorry, you are now and forever, Giga-Dad."
<OOC> Nemori will convert a spell to heal the fool orc. Just a small one. Enough to get him on his feet.
<OOC> Robert says, "I can pop a wand charge, Nemori."

Gramarye's eyes go from mechanical red kill-eyes to their usual black voids, and the bronze doll (or mannequin) resumes a neutral position. "Combat concluded. Running system diagnostics: operational. Arcane reserves: low."

Her head swivels over to Jay. As she speaks again, a white light blinks in her eyes, going dormant again when she's finished speaking: "Identification requested. Introduction protocol initiated. I am Grace Reason Amity Miracle August Revelry Young Earnest--designation GRAMARYE. I am capable of enchantment and item creation to your exact specifications."

Nemori's summoned rapier fades away as the magic holding it together dissipates. She watches the other constructs warily.. but with Gurocco's defeat, they seem disinclined to continue the competition. So she puts her actual rapier away as well, and deposits her holy token into her pocket. Then she walks around Robert and over to the fallen orc.

She stands above him for a moment. Someone might be forgiven for believing her ready to give the much bigger form a swift kick somewhere vulnerable. But she glowers, then turns and takes several steps away. "Gather your necessities and do it quickly, Gurocco. The time for your games is done."

Eztli stands ready for action in case the automatons continue, autonomously? But it turns out that with the armor broken beyond use, they stop functioning, as well. "Well, I hope that you'll honor your word and come with us." Eztli huffs. Robert, if the Oruch can move on their own, can you carry the artifice machines off? That spell should last another couple of minutes, and I can help too if that's needed. There was a point there, they might be able to be put to use for the refugees."

"Okay!" The bluejay bobs his head at Magpie, "it's.. ah. Something my sister would do. She's real heroic, so I thought I should too, since I have her sword."

He pats at a rapier which has not left his hip, then runs through the yard to retrieve his hunting weapon. One day, one day, it will bring home the bacon.

zhooooooem goes the titan armor as Bob works an plated pointer finger beneath the opposite vambrace and flips open a connecting circuit. *THOONK* it offers next as the domed helmet pops up and reveals the shiny, sweat-soaked and effort-reddened, red-skinned face of the middle-aged artificer. His eyes set to darting about and taking stock of everyone left standing.

"Nice of you to join us, IC," Bob greets Jay, making an effort to keep from shouting. "Everyone doing OK?" He's fished out a shiny silver gadget set with external platinum-and-gold cogs and a thumb-activated lever; a cross between a compact sextant and a long, hollow nail. Kneeling, he helps Gurocco sit up and puts the gadget to work, working the leaver until the whole thing glows golden and the oruch's wounds begin to heal.

GAME: Robert used a Wand of Cure Light Wounds.
GAME: Robert used a Wand of Cure Light Wounds.

<OOC> Robert says, "So I'm not sure how much lethal he took, Whirl,"
<OOC> Robert says, "but the lethal and non-lethal are healed simultaneously. Up to 15 of each."

"...hgnngh," is his response. The healing magic definitely eases the pain and he gets to his feet, slowly, before saying, "... right. Let's go then. We can catch up with the others. I want to thank you for humoring an old man's request."

He looks back at the home he's leaving behind and lets out a sigh. "Guess I don't have it in me anymore."

There's a level sadness to his tone. Resignation. Acceptance.

And then he'll move on.

Giga Dad
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "So what else, then? :D"
<OOC> Whirlpool says, "Aside from HUGE ROBERT"
<OOC> Robert stares at profile in mirror, sucks in gut dejectedly. T_T
<OOC> Nemori says, "Robert now weighs eight times more than before."
[WhirlChan] Robert is nearly one ton of lovable dadventurer.
[WhirlChan] Robert says, "1,880lbs."
[WhirlChan] Magpie says, "GIGA-DAD."

Fucking magnets e-bolas, how do they work?
[WhirlChan] Nemori says, "I MIGHT be wrong, but I believe since you use Dex to attack with your bolas, you use your dex bonus for the CMB check, too. You're supposed to use the same bonuses that you used to attack with the weapon."
[WhirlChan] Jay says, "I.. hm. Well ... that was a crummy roll that no dex bonus would save"
[WhirlChan] Jay says, "pretty sure the attack missed too"
[WhirlChan] Nemori says, "Also, for the future, I don't think you make an attack roll if you're using it to trip. You either attack with it (and do the damage) or make a strip attempt."
[WhirlChan] Nemori says, "So you make an attack roll if you want to do (non-lethal) damage, or you do a CMB roll if you wish to trip them."

[WhirlChan] Jay says, "jay would normally worry about that, but has yet to hit anything with them, ever."
[WhirlChan] Nemori says, "The day will come!"
