  • Title: Dwarf Fortress Part 2
  • GM: Subduction
  • Characters: Khepri, Crik, Jay, Sable, Schara, Yaretzi
  • Place: Subduction's Trench
  • Summary: The party continues to explore the abandoned dwarven fortress, albeit with reinforcements!

Having dispatched or driven off- and in one case simply witnessed the demise of- the javelin-throwing Troglodytes in the main entrance of this ancient dwarven fortress, the adventurers find themselves with a moment to breathe. The entryhall, with its murderholes, is quiet now save for the adventurers' own footsteps. The drawbridge which spans a spike pit is currently down, to the misfortune of one of the Troglodytes who met a swift end amongst the ancient remains of previous would-be invaders at the bottom.

A couple more adventurers have made their way to help with the investigation, too late to ride with the first group and their guide, they make their own way to the camp at the foot of the mountain into which this particular edifice is built. Outside, they are met by the scholars who posted the request to the adventurer's guild in the first place- who express concern, after a troglodyte was seen fleeing from the ruins, but no adventurers followed it.

On the other side of the spike pit, some fifteen feet across, and more than twenty deep and long, a pair of doors lay stalwart- as well as a lever set into the intricately engraved stone of the wall. The ruins are pitch dark, save for what light the adventurers carry with them- any lights it may once have had have long since burned out.

Khepri dispassionately looks down into the pit where the troglodyte is impaled, before looking to Crik. "Unfortunate. However, it did save us from possibly being the victim of this trap. I will offer an appropriate prayer." The golem pauses. "In the meantime, though, can you fly across to press the lever? I suspect that will reset the bridge, though I will defer to you if you have differing insights."

Crik, after having disappeared somewhere and then reappearing again, tilts his head at Khepri. He tilts his head the other way around, watching the tall golem, before looking down at the pit. Then back at the golem, tail bobbing behind him. Finally, his head bops down and then back up.

"I'll look at the lever." His head moves up to look at the ceiling, before he takes a bit of running step and flys over the gap, to pull the lever.

Sable is a strange sight to see... the Peacekeeper is a little Dwarven woman, walking alongside a baby Giant Mantis... this Mantis is about the same size she is with its clicking mandibles, it looks rather threatening as the pair of them walk she finally sees a gathering of people. "Hello!" she calls "I am Sable and this is Jhor, we heard there could be some need for a Dwarven guide?"

<OOC> Subduction says, "I don't think you can fly until level 5, Crik. But you can glide. Give me an Acrobatics check."
<OOC> Khepri says, "(Also, go ahead and move me over next to the pit)"
<OOC> Subduction says, "Before you move, Khepri. Give me a perception check."
GAME: Khepri rolls perception: (20)+10: 30
GAME: Crik rolls acrobatics: (18)+8: 26
<OOC> Subduction says, "And a 26 is enough to fly across the gap."

Schara doesn't say anything further. The artificer clanks closer to the door they came from, and stomps around on the stone to make sure they weren't stepping on any further traps.

Hoisting the lever is no mean feat- but Crik manages it. It's made of cold, sturdy metal with a clutch built into the handle that must be squeezed as the lever is pulled. It grinds as it is pulled, ancient mechanisms complaining at unfamiliar use. But finally it is pulled across, and then springs back. Distant sounds of chains moving on spindles, and great weights shifting cause the dust underfoot to dance and shudder. And the drawbridge begins to rise once more, slowly rotating back up to span the spike pit.

Khepri starts to walk back towards the center hall and the group, but pauses. Then the golem tilts its head quizzically, staring at the wall, and then backpedals a couple paces. Then it moves forward again, before reaching out to push at the wall experimentally. "Interesting. I have found what is colloquially known as a 'secret door'." Khepri leans out to look at the others, especially Crik. "Well done," the Executor says after a moment. "Please make note of the stone that causes the drawbridge to collapse. We do not wish to trigger it unless necessary."

Sable moves through the hall and she and her mantis slowly press forward. She watches the drawbridge lower and she slowly makes her way forward sweeping the floors before she steps to be shure she wont trigger a trap herself but has a staff which she moves out before her.

Yaretzi reaches that camp before the entrance, her horse reined in as she dismounts, She's dressed in simple garb, a coat of leather that drapes to near her knees worn. She finds a place to quickly hobble her mount near the other animals, trying to not waste time. "Yar here there is work. She come to help." she says bluntly to any who ask. It's a stiff demeanor she presents. She's late to the fight. Kor would be displeased. Yaretzi? Not so much.

""She will fight, and explore. Tell her what to do. She will follow orders." The woman of the jungle trying to be as compliant as possible, flashing a big grin from behind her painted face. "This the place, yes?"

With a shudder, the drawbridge settles back into place spanning the gap, and the ruins are quiet once more. Crik remains on the far side, next to one of the two doors which seem to lead further within. Khepri's passage seems to head north, as well, but turns sharply some fourty feet down, so where it emerges can't be made out without venturing further inside.

<OOC> Subduction says, "So, drawbridge is passable again now. Two big stone doors, and one secret passage available to investigation."

A black, white and blue jay egalrin appears near the pit from one of the side passages, "Hi. Hi. Well..."

"There's Troglodytes." There are corpses of four, he gestures at Crik "We were scouting ahead but can't see in the dark, and it wasn't the best result so things can be changed up. There's a couple doors, they have already attacked the dwarves."

"Suggestions?"

Khepri regards the others with that tilted head, disturbingly bird-like even though it is very much not a bird. "A thought: any foes further into the complex may have heard the drawbridge being triggered. I think we should proceed through the secret passage, and thus any ambush through those doors will come to naught."

Sable looks up as she smiles to the blue egalrin "arent you beautiful." she says softly and she nods her head "Ive got a Dragon spitter, and can see in the low light".. she says softly "did you wish Jhorm and I to lead?" asks the caveleir. A nod of her head to Khepri "sound enough tactic."

Crik peeks at the drawbridge, then more carefully starts sneaking across the bridge. "C stands for Cross-examination, walk first to learn the paths and traps ahead?" The corvid egalrin suggests, as he pulls out and holds a sunrod in his hands. Then he looks down at the pit. Back up again. "A secret door usually is for the inhabitants. Less traps, but more javelins."

Yaretzi had to play catchup with the Party, having been filled in, and entering late. She's a bit excited now that she's been given clear directions. She's come from the entrance, pausing there as the group seems to be busy discussing their next moves. "Yar is sorry!" she calls to them. It took her a while to store and settle things at the cap. "She missed the fun?" suddenly careful, hand on weapon as she tries to mingle with them. "Does Yar need to watch for traps? Step safe?" oblivious to what happened, but interested in helping.

"There is no fun here, just death and killing and traps." The artificer answers with a shake of their head. "I guess we still need to investigate further, even if I just want to leave them alone and explain why they can't come here. But ambush them? I'd rather not. Really tall lady, miss Dwarf, do either of you speak draconic so we might at least try talking to them if we run into more?"

"Oh!" Jay's crest pops up and he stands taller. "Why yes, yes! I am beautiful. Handsome too!"

He spreads his wings, displaying his striking and clashing colour patterns, turning around slowly. They're nicely set off by his mithril vest, and weapons. There's a lot of silver or mithril on that bird. He sweeps one wing low in a bow towards Sable, "Integrity C Truefeather, the'C' is for complimentary. Well, Crik and I should check for traps, they are harsh. The next two after us should be the heaviest armoured."

"Hmmm..." Integrity looks briefly thoughtful. "You know, the Troglodyte didn't go for the secret passage, he went for the bridge."

There's another glance at the pit, "they might not know about that passage. It could be safer to go that way, allegedly."

"Or their friends are behind the secret door, waiting for murder." Crik accompanies, tilting his head back and opening up his beak. A throat, grinding sound hacks repeatedly, before he flips his beak back down. Black eyes peer around the room. His hand crossbow disappears under the cloak before a small leathery book appears.

"Tall lady? Does talking armor mean Yar?" The woman pointing to herself with a grin, nodding as they address Schara. "She speaks that language better than the trade tongue! It is language of home." she says with a bit of pride. Integrity is nodded at, the words and names shared between the group noted. "Point way, and Yar shall lead! Or follow. She is used to either." patting her blade's pommel where it sits in its leather frog. "Work. Yes?"

Khepri pauses, then looks at Jay with a careful stare. "... That is very true." The golem backs up, and peers down the now-opened secret door, looking down the corridor. "Unless they are invisible troglodytes, I do not believe they are hiding in the corridor. Jay has an excellent point."

Sable smiles to the Jay and she watches him show off, she waits for the others to come up with a plan, though her eyes remain on the secrete passage.

"If it means we're less likely to immediately throw ourselves into a fight with more of them, and possibly less traps for me to step on, I'm willing to give it a try." Schara nods slowly. "Yar- yes, Yar. You're the tallest person here, war golems don't count because they can just put extra metal supports in their trunks and legs. If you can speak draconic, I think that's what they were speaking earlier, so, if you get the chance, at least try to talk them down, please?"

<OOC> Subduction says, "Anyone who is sneaking, give me stealth rolls."

The passage is low, but not too narrow. Built for people shorter but broader than the average human- it's quite a comfortable size for Sable, everyone else will need to stoop. But nevertheless, they are able to pass through it in single file. It turns another sharp corner, heading back north again- likely emerging near the left hand door, though a bit further to the northwest, if one's counting their footsteps accurately. It is barred by another secret wall segment, though this one has a hand-hold and is obvious, since there's no need to hide the entrance to a secret tunnel from inside said tunnel.

A foul smell wafts from the other side of the door. One familiar to the adventurers already present. A fishy, coppery smell. More Troglodytes.

<OOC> Subduction says, "Jay, Crik. Fort saves please."

Crik hops on behind Jay - eyes constantly moving back up and down the other's backpockets - before they are once again stopped by another secret wall segment. "... open door, covertly?" The corvid suggests, pulling out a round orb from within his cloak. It had a fuse wire and an excited looking corvid holding it; beak open and all.

Jay's eyes alight on the intriguing round orb, his feathers ruffle. That would be lovely to try out. A wiser, more cautious thought arrives.

"Let me try first." He pulls some tools from his vest and starts examining around the secret wall segment, slipping the picks in, feeling for catches and hinges.

Sable tries to use her tactician skills the best she can while they are all alligned in the small passage, she smells a smell and she murmers "we cant stay in here.." she says quietly as they are not moving she looks over to Jay.

Khepri of course can't smell it, but judging from the way Crik and Jay twitch, it can take a guess. It doesn't speak, but the golem does shift its shield back into position, drawing its khopesh. At the sight of the grenade in Crik's hand, one could swear the golem's yellow eyes get wide and it silently, wildly gesticulates as if to say, 'Whoa! Whoa!'

"Smells like more of them in there, even back here." Schara coughs from further back in the hall. They hadn't optimized their armor for any stealth by the way it quietly clanked and whirred with the occasional step. "At least we know they probably didn't use this way. right? But, is that a bomb? Why is your first thought to immediately go to a bomb?"

Yaretzi reaches into a coat pocket, producing a small clay container that she cracks open. It's smell is that of ash and makes a pungent paste. While the others talk of grenades and explosions, she adds dark lines under her cheeks, grey now under green. "Yar said this would be fun. Yar not wrong." liking the ideas of explosions. Yar steps back and waits, giving the others room to talk and work in the cramped space. "Best cover ears, yeah?"

Sable frowns to Jay "thought you wanted to talk to them." she says quietly keeping her voice low, and she pats her murderbug who is... looking rather hungry at the smell of fish

GAME: Yaretzi used a War paint of the terrible visage.

"Well, we can still talk." Jay replies, "It's probably easier with the door open than through it."

He carefully pushes it open.

The door is pushed open carefully, quietly. And it's a good job, too. As there is a Troglodyte right next to it- crude club in hand, staring at the main door the party opted to avoid. The sounds and smells of other troglodytes in the room indicate it's not alone. In the center of the hexagonal room, there is a large stone dais- carved with great, bold runes. At the center of the dais is a recessed circle, about the size of a fist, that looks oddly empty.

In the room to the north, another Troglodyte is mid-step when the door opens right in his eyeline. This one carries no weapons, but his claws are bigger and more wicked- and his reptillian face is painted. He points towards the group, and issues a bellow of alarm and anger.

"... why not a bomb?" Crik asks instead from Schara. He holds up the round orb. It looked pretty hefty. His tail was bobbing up and down, before he moves to stand behind Jay, watching the door open.

And then there is a quiet flick, wicker of a light, and then he throws it into the center of the room. A few moments later, there is a very pathetic and quiet 'phap', before the room rapidly fills with smoke. "Fog for the craven." A set of scratchy sounds.

<OOC> Khepri says, "Swift action to activate Judgement: Healing. I now have fast healing 2. I will then run to 13,18."

A thump, and smoke. Actually, this is not a bad start. Khepri begins to move, golem limbs churning as it runs down the hall. As it bursts through the smoke, the Executor holds its khopesh high. "The Harpist protects me. She mends my wounds. She guides my blade. You will surrender or perish!" Energy crackles along Khepri's form and its yellow eyes flare in the smoke from the bomb.

There's a sudden >Chirp!< when Jay is spotted. His eyes lock with the troglodyte, the sudden sniff he takes is all about the local atmosphere and not commentary. As the plague doctor golem pushes past him into the room, that becomes the plan.

"Tell them if they want to talk, to talk Sable."

He's off, into the room! The jay slips across to the sloped wall opposite, his rapier making it into his hand, he waits to strike if 'attack' is chosen.

<OOC> Yaretzi says, "Since Trog-2 is still flat-footed. Yar is going to run. It's 40 speed X5, for her mithril armor. "15x, 16y?""

<OOC> Subduction says, "It's not surprise around anymore, but so long as your BAB is 1+ you can always draw while moving."
<OOC> Subduction says, "Also, give me a fort save since you're in the stink now."

Yaretzi cants her head to one side, sighing. "You will only get one chance to lay down arms!" Yaretzi hollers, the plan she had heard seemingly changed. It amuses her enough to push passed some of the other's of the party as she breaks into a run while following that scent and sound. She can't see much through the smoke, but she comes tearing through the doorway all the same, skittering to a halt in the middle of the room with her large blade drawn. "You will not be warned again. Surrender!" <draconic>

The Troglodytes who had been waiting to surprise the adventurers find themselves the ones being ambushed. They barely have time to balk at the sudden arrivals and begin turning when the room fills with smoke. Now obscured by the thick smog, one of them- wearing a large, circular runestone hanging from a chain about his neck, lets out a deep guttural laugh. "The meat speaks!" it bellows in Draconic, rearing up its eyes glow a dull red, the scales around its eyes and mouth blackening and smoking, its claws grow larger, sharper, wickedly curved. And then it barrels into the room.

One of those who had been guarding the door turns, following the sound of Yaretzi's voice, and swinging its club blindly in her general direction- finding nothing at all but thin air.

The bluejay, lurking by the wall and ready for this, thrusts with his rapier. An attack that only serves to call attention to himself as the point grazes across scales.

<OOC> Sable says, "great going to draw my weapon and go flank Jaybird. Jhor is going to attack the trog at 14,19"

<OOC> Subduction says, "The warpriest'll cast bull's strength on himself, then."

Following the howling berserker that charged out of the room, another large troglodyte specimen follows- this one is clad in chain mail, and carries a massive three-headed flail. The haft of the flail is made of some kind of mushroom stalk, hardened like wood. While the head of it looks Khazad in design, and from three seperate smaller flails to judge by their differing appearances. With him a wave of intolerable stench follows, cloying and unescapable, it seems to saturate the pores in its intensity.

He lets out a growl and his muscles bulge and swell.

<OOC> Crik says, "How difficult would it be to try and knock number two out. Asking for a friend. ._."

Crik cranes his head as everyone rushes into the smoke, yelling loud words and... what probably were words. "Not a better time for diplomacy." He says with a bobbing of his tail. "Time for a stunning entrance, suit of armor."

Dashing into the smoke, the corvid attempts to veer around the corner around the troglodyte guarding the door - but he sees a pressure plate and instead moves around him, ducking a swing from its friend in passing. "Traps in the corner!" He screes helpfully over the mayhem, before in vain trying to knock sense to his chosen target.

"Why the smoke bomb? Everyone is going to panic and, oh, this is not going well." The artificer sighs as everyone is running into the room. "Please don't fight! We just want to talk, lay down your weapons, please." Schara pleads as they pushes further through the tunnel, not daring to enter the main room as further traps are pointed out.

"Oh, gods, that's even worse than the last room." They cough as their eyes start to water from the smell.

The troglodyte caught in Jhor's massive claws snarls and gnashes, gradually turning the tables on the Mantis- pinning its claws and leaning in to take a bite out of the creature's flesh, coming away with a chunk of it and the insect's ichor running down its jaws. It swallows the mouthful without hesitation and hisses a challenge.

Meanwhile, the slowest of the Troglodytes finally realizes that the javelin in his hand isn't going to be much use when he can't see more than a few feet from his nose, so he stows it in a sling on his back and stalks towards the group, swinging his club back and forth before him in the hopes that it makes contact before one of their blades makes contact with him.

With that, the khopesh comes up, and cuts a deep wound into the troglodyte that's attacking Jhor, drawing blood. "Surrender or die!"

Yaretzi is already a bit irritated that none of them bothered to reply to her in the draconic tongue. She's not feeling good, the stench getting to her stomach. It's at that blast of fowl stench that is almost overpowering that Yar loses it. "They not like what Yar have to say!" her flash of anger seized, and that large blade is brought before her as she tries to judge where the enemy is in the smoke. Fancy footwork, but for nothing. She heaves into the slash, catching nothing in her swing. She's already sweating.

>ack< *kaff* /kaff/ gnnnhhff! The stench is overwhelming. Jay's feathers wilt and he staggers back, away from the Troglodyte and its reek. As his stomach lurches he dives, barfing on the flagstones. A step, another step, and he gags, "Trap! Don't step!"

Flapping his wings and hopping over the danger, he coasts down the corridor, out of the smoke, out of the stench and staggers to lean against a wall. His chest heaves as he breathes heavily and concentrates on keeping more of his bile down. "I'm sick. Sick!"

The berserker laughs as Jay runs, trailing vomit across the flagstones. It steps into the space vacated by the pretty birdy, and then inhales deeply- it brings its hands to its mouth, gobbing a clot of viscous phlegm onto its own palms. It rubs them together, and then claps- the strike ignites the viscous mixture, and a gout of flame flies forth washing over Sable and Khepri and scorching them both.

<OOC> Subduction says, "Sable you're up. He just singed your eyebrows and the other one took a bite out of your companion"

Sable tries to give combat advice to Khepri, even though visability is a little hard, the dwarf tries to call in some aid to her allies "watch out there is something in the shadows just to your right!" she says over the sound of fighting. So focused on offering him advice her gun is fired.. and even as close as she is misses its target. How embarassing for the knight. Her companion goes forth to attack another.. its claws gripping so hard and squeezing blood from the fishy monster it rawers.

<OOC> Subduction says, "Give me another perception roll, Crik"

Crik stands in between the two doors leading into the smoke filled room. A new pressure plate. Resisting the urge to hop on it, he looks over to his other side. Also a pressure plate. Back to the other side. Pressure plate.

A moment of contemplation later, he flips his dagger around and moves to give the troglodyte standing nearby a solid whack with the hilt.

"Just please drop your weapons?" Schara asks again as they stumbled along out of the passageway in time to see the torrent of flame rushing past barely, and at least one figure drop from it. "You just burnt one of your own people, this makes no sense!"

<OOC> Subduction says, "Trog 1 didn't like getting bonked, it'll bonk Crik back."
<OOC> Subduction says, "Full attack"
GAME: Subduction rolls 2: (7)+2: 9
GAME: Subduction rolls -3: (6)++-3: 3
GAME: Subduction rolls -3: (6)++-3: 3

The Trog that just got whapped with the hilt of a dagger grunts and rubs his nose where it was whacked. He then leans in, issuing a spittle-shotgun of a roar in Crik's face, and swings its club and claws blindly- never finding his mark on the deft Elgarin.
