Down into the Mines

From Tenebrae
Jump to navigation Jump to search

You've all been hired by the mine owners of one of the mines in Dun Morden. The mine has been closed for a week because of a couple of deaths. The miners that did make it out claim that it was a darkness that ate up the other miners. You all stand before the mine in question, it's a rough square ten foot high by ten foot wide. There are mine cart track leading it. It's morning, but 15 feet beyond the entrance it grows too dark to see.

Stirling takes a long drag of his cigar, pulling the slide on his deathray back with a loud click. "Let’s go make a house call, would hate for whatever is down there to suffer needlessly and for too long. Whatever it is."

"Well I am glad that most dwarven tunnels aren't built for their height" rumbles Yngvild as she hoists her giant earthbreaker off her shoulder and sets it on the ground in front of her. That done she peers into the darkness and rumbles a prayer to Angoron. As she finishes the rune carved headband she wears starts to glow a blue light to illuminate the area for those who can't see in the dark.

GAME: Yngvild casts Light. Caster Level: 7 DC: 14

Dire Wolf has learned of more and more troubles beneath the earth around Dun Mordren lately. Maybe the khazad should stay on the surface if they're disturbing so many other creatures. On the other hand, it is probably one more mul'niessa plot. Attacking from the darkness is certainly their style. If it is one of their machinations (and it must be), it must be stopped. She sniffs at the entrance, not needing her vision as much, though it is not so limited by the dim.

Corra shakes her head, "I just don't like being underground." she says and shakes her head, "So sooner in, sooner out."

Garak finds it an irony that with all the talk of war throughout the lands that a Serrielite of all clerics is here in Alexandria region. Or under it, to be precise. But he supposes it was just as well that his duties kept him near the temple. "We can make light if anyone needs it," he offers. His own kind are gifted with eyes that see in the dark. "But I agree - we might as well get started."

Yngvild claps Corra companionably on the shoulder, although it seems the large Aesir Cleric doesn't quite know her own strength as the blow lands solidly "The Patron of Warriors shines his light in all places" she rumbles in scant words of comfort. With that she turns her gaze to the tunnels beyond, the light shining from her brow illuminating around her.

Down, down, down you go, the darkness soon swallows you up as you have only the light provided by Yngild's headband. Occasionally you have to squeeze past an abandon mine cart fill full of the unrefined ore that the miners just left on their flight out of the mine. You walk and walk and walk following the mine as it slowly descends. It's gradual enough that so that you barely feel it. Occasionally there are off shoots, but they only go back 30 feet or so. Finally after what feels like forever you come to the end of the tunnel in and it opens up into a cavern that's is high enough that the light can no longer touch the ceiling.

Corra does growl just a little but nods as she pulls her bow and keeps an arrow notched. Best way to do it after all as she moves with the others. She keeps her eyes on the tunnels for signs of ambush or signs of passage.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Anyone have darkvision or Low-light vision?"

<OOC> Yngvild says, "Not I"

Dire Wolf snuffs at the air and ground as they travel, as scent will tell more than eyes might with the limited light. "The dark does not eat," she growls, in regards to the khazad assertions.

<OOC> Garak has darkvision

You paged (Stirling, Dire Wolf, Garak) with 'You can see that you are in a tiered cave, obviously where the main bulk of the mining is one. On one of the tiers about 40 feet above you, you can see this large crab-like monsters standing above you. There is 3 of them in total and you can see that they can see you. They are aiming one of their claws at the group.'

Garak raises a hand and suddenly a gleaming lance appears in it. He looks up at the ceiling. "Look out!" he calls.

<OOC> Dire Wolf doesn't suppose these creatures are natural?

Stirling grins and loads a rocket into the top barrel of his deathray. "Spider-things above. Let’s light them up."

Garak takes an unconscious step forward, reading his lance to ward off the Crab-creatures if they should choose to drop into their midst. He also raises his other hand, holding a holy symbol of Serriel. A glowing lance appears next to one of the crabs and pokes at it.

Dire Wolf snorts as her warning comes a bit too late. "This is their den, their home. We are the intruders. They hunt for food, not malice." They are obviously not some vile Mul plot. She takes two steps backwards and halts.

Stirling looks up at the critters and points his deathray at the center of the trio. "Fire in the hole..." he says as a warning to the others as a rocket zips from the top barrel and blows up amongst all the spider things. "Well will you look at that, quick little critters."

GAME: Cesran rolls 1d20+2-1: (18)+2+-1: 19

Yngvild casts her all too human eyes up at the ceiling. They narrow a touch as various holy and not so holy lights and fires go off but above the din her bellowing voice echoes "ANGORON WITNESS" she demands of her patron as she lifts her massive hammer to the sky. Well roof "BLESS THE BRAVE AND MAY YOUR HOLY LIGHT FALL UPON THE UNWORTHY." As she makes her bold demands of the Iron Mountain a glowing light burns in her eyes before flaring out over all those nearby.

The three crab like monsters all shoot out this thin filament towards the group. One misses the group completely and begins to reel the filament back in. Two hit Dire Wolf and one is strong enough to start to reel her in. She's yanked off her feet and into the air ten feet. She's dragged up the side of the cave wall towards the tier that the crabs monsters are standing.

<OOC> Dire Wolf says, "The penalty is mind-affecting."

<OOC> Cesran says, "Dire wolf you are still being dragged up. You can give me a strength check or an escape artist to get free."

Garak tries to follow the flow of battle, something that of course seems to grow easier the longer he studies the teaching of Serriel. "They're 'home' is the middle of a Khazad mine," he remarks. He looks like he wants to say more but then the wolf is caught. Garak raises his holy symbol again. A ray of pure divine light blasts through and spears one of the creatures, punching a hole clean through its thorax. His glowing lance pokes and stabs at one of the others, ineffectually.

<OOC> Dire Wolf will attempt the former.

Dire Wolf growls as she moved back, yet becomes chosen as a morsel for one of them. She struggles against the filament, snapping jaws at it and digging claws into the rock if she can. The filament snaps and she drops back down to her paws.

<OOC> Cesran says, "Corra you are up next yes, you can fire on them as there are small fires left over from Stirling's fireball"

You all smell it first before you see it, the smell of acid dissolving metal. As you all turn around you can see this mass of blackness moving up behind you. It glistens wetly as it moves towards you the light from the small fires and Yngild's lighted headband. It has a couple of pseudo pods extended as it feels its way around growing as it seeks to get closer and closer towards you.

Garak wrinkles his nose at the smell. He turns to look at the approaching menace, then casts a quick look at his allies to make sure they are also reacting. "Warrior, look out!" he shouts to Yngvild. Even as he does this he's raising his holy symbol. A ghostly figure of a mounted knight appears in front of the darkness, leaning forward to stab it with ghostly lance. Immediately after the lance Garak had summoned earlier streaks forward and stabs the mass of blackness as well.

As the lances slice into the flesh of the creatures something strange happens. It doesn't appear to do any damage to the ooze and instead the ooze splits, first into 2 oozes, and then one of the oozes is split again when the lance from the mounted knight hits it. There are now three oozes.

They attack, but only one manages to hit and latch on to Stirling. The smell of acid wafts in the air as his armor and his flesh are slowly being dissolved.
