  • Characters: Rivalen 4, Ketala 3, Yrqemm 5, Faileh 2, Jolan 4
  • Place: Country Cemetary
  • Time: Aug 26, 2015
  • Summary: Hired by an innkeeper to check out local cemetary that might affect his business.
  • APL: 5
  • Encounter 1: 5 Burning Champion Skeletons (CR 2) CR 7

It has been on the darker of dark side lately. The moon hasn't been out as much at least not in the quite village of Harker's Rest. It lays on one of the trade routes out of Alexandria and is one of the last inns before a long journey, as such it sees a lot of business. These dark nights have brought something stirring. There have been strange sightings near the cemetary that is up on a hill behind the village. The innkeeper has hired you all to investigate as he is worried that it will affect his business. He fed you all and let you tied over until dusk and points out the direction of the cemetary.

Jolan walks along, a small glowing crystal floating around her head. "So, how fast do you think these possible troublemakers will run away when they see our dazzling skill?" she asks the others.

"Rivalen d'Alembert" the rather fancily dressed Myrrish man declares by way of introduction to those at the table, in a rather artistocratic voice that matches his rather fancy attire. At Jolan's comment he looks over and offers a dazzling smile "Or at the sight of those colours together" he teases lightly with a broadening of his smile.

Ketala just sort of grunts. It really is what she does most. Most sound from the dwarf coming either from the clank of metal on metal, or the chime of her hair ornamentaion. Her voice even, face bare. "Herald Ketala."

A bit cranky sounding, Faileh says, "If they can comprehend fear." He slips the shield off of his pack and straps it to his arm. After getting the shield situated, he strikes a torch and lingers a bit for the group to start moving.

The grin on Jolan's face gets larger. "But of course!" she beams back at Rivalen. "If one is to be distinctive, then it helps to dress the part! And if the reputation of Jolan Ozera is enough to cause them to flee, then why wouldn't they run at the sight of myself and my stalwart companions?"

"Who?" Rivalen teases Jolan again, a bright smile hopefully enough to take any sting from his light words. He turns a little more serious as he touches the brim of his hat in a kind of salute to the others who introduced themselves "An honour of course..." he says politely and then starts to stride towards the cemetary, his gaze a little more intent than his words.

"Because they are mindless undead, not that being undead is a pre-requisite for mindlessness," replies the tall, fae elf as he steps away from the low-light-destroying illumination of the torch. But Yrqemm is smiling, a touch, as one would expect from someone with a monkey on his shoulder. "Yrqemm, or some variation thereof which your human tongues can manage," he adds by way of introduction.

Ketala grunts again, raising a hand to wave off the conversation.

After getting situated and everyone else's introduction has been made, Faileh says, "Faileh Narruma, or Fai the Blade." He somewhat gestures to the sword that is partially concealed on his back with a small head jerk, "Because of that." It appears he is eager to move.

Faileh stops being so slow and increases his pace, armor jingling a little louder. You can see the walls that surround the cemetary, though the light is fading from the skin its getting darker. The Torch helps though of course. The Gate into the cemetary is easily directly ahead.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "How high is the wall, please?" <OOC> Aurala says, "10'" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "Thanks. And do we have any more specific info than "Check out the cemetery"? Any particular area or thing we're advised to look for?" <OOC> Aurala says, "just that there has been someone or something disturbing the cemetary. they weren't that specific. basically he is afraid of the cemetary so brought someone else in to do it" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "OK. Could we walk around it first to get a sense of other exits and see if we hear anything while we do so ? (Or am I dragging this out unecessarily? :)" <OOC> Rivalen says, "You can, but Riv is heading straight in :)" <OOC> Rivalen says, "Once folks pose anyway :P" Yrqemm pages: OK. I'd like to cllmaber up on the wall and walk the perimiter while the circus heads in, trumpets and torches blaring ;-) but not if that's a pain for you or the scene and we want to get straight into it. I don't know what your style/preferences are :) Yrqemm pages: Please advise. You paged Yrqemm with 'you can do as you would like. I can adjust. am flexible, its also why I tend to only do one encounter, so we don't have to go 2 sessions if things go overlong' Yrqemm pages: OK, just wanted to be sensitive/respectful to your plans. :) Thanks.

Yrqemm ambles up to the wall. "We'll scout from up here, and provide overwatch," he says to Kerala, then clambers up the wall after gently lobbing his monkey up on it.

<OOC> Aurala says, "perception from everyone" GAME: Rivalen rolls perception: (16)+8: 24 GAME: Faileh rolls perception: (2)+6: 8 GAME: Ketala rolls perception: (6)+4: 10 GAME: Jolan rolls Perception: (14)+8: 22 <OOC> Aurala says, "yrqemm?" <OOC> Aurala says, "?"

The cemetary is quiet at the moment. It looks fairly good sized, probably about an acre at least inside the walls. As it gets darker there is a flicker in the back corner.

You paged (Jolan, Rivalen) with 'the flicker seems to be flames maybe a fire or something like that.'

Focusing his eyes into the distance, Faileh continues his journey deeper into the cemetary. The flicker in the back corner seems like a good place to look for trouble, so he heads that direction.

"Something appears to be aflame..." Rivalen comments as he drifts along with the larger man. As he moves his draws out his rather fancy, but funtional rapier with a slithery hiss. Human eyes are not that great in darkness, but they do have their own along, flashing from his buckler as he straps it to his right arm.

Jolan narrows her eyes at the flicker in the back. "Indeed," she agrees, buckler on her left arm and whip in her right hand, the glowing crystal still dancing around her head.

Ketala just continues to move. Alert, but apparently not overly so.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "Sorry about that! Fricken alarm went off and i had to get into the box to turn it off. Apologies." GAME: Yrqemm rolls perception: (17)+7: 24 Yrqemm pages: +2 for the familiar :) You paged Yrqemm with 'you can tell the flickering is fire or something, from the height, maybe something on fire.' <OOC> Aurala says, "keep posing for now. its still some distance off since its on the far side." Yrqemm pages: Can i make my way along the wall, independent of the loud party? :) You paged Yrqemm with 'you could but it would take you some time, due to top of wall not in best condition and you would be going the long way.'

Faileh tries to respect the dead as he crosses through the cemetary. He holds the torch just above eye level to illuminate the way. Shield strapped, but both weapons still securely sheathed within their scabbards.

Yrqemm pages: ok, i'll come down (posing) and follow along in the shadows :) You paged Yrqemm with 'alright'

"Most definitely a fire, yes," says the elf, jumping down on the other side of the wall, the squirrel monkey riding on his shoulder. He then starts to head in that direction at a cautious pace, using the shadows to his advantage.

Yrqemm pages: May I move while Hiding? I don't recall if that's poss or what the penalties are :) From afar, Yrqemm canl ook it up!

"Within the cemetary?" Ketala asks, eyes moving slowly from side to side.

You paged Yrqemm with 'you move at like half speed, -5 penalty to move at full speed' Yrqemm pages: i'll take the penalty. You paged Yrqemm with 'okay roll' GAME: Yrqemm rolls stealth: (14)+8: 22 to aurala

As you get closer you can see that it looks like figures that are moving about, the fires themselves are on fire, maybe elementals maybe something else. Have to get closer.

Yrqemm pages: i would like to cast Protection from Evil on my person, if allowed?

"Well rather lacking the ability to see through walls, and presuming they do run all the way around one would hazard a guess as to yes" Rivalen responds lightly to the taciturn drawf. As they near he falls silent, moving a little into the shadows as he sneaks in for a closer look.

Gear clanking against his armor, Faileh is a lot less sneaky. He marches along towards the fiery somethings. "Interesting." he says as he glances over to Jolan and asks, "Isn't there a song for this?"

You paged Yrqemm with 'cast away' Yrqemm pages: re-reading the commands , sorry!

Jolan shrugs. "I think one of my sisters might have a song about this, but I'd have to think for a bit to see if I can recall any tales," she explains to Faileh.

GAME: Yrqemm refreshes spells. GAME: Yrqemm casts Protection From Evil. Caster Level: 2 DC: 14

Ketala tilts her head slightly. "Never heard of zombies dancing around fires."

<OOC> Aurala says, "a few more poses and we will get more detail"

Curiously enough a mix of different patterns, materials and colours blends in quite well. Or so Rivalen hopes anyway. Stealth not being quite noble afterall. Still he circles around on his soft souled boots as he approaches quietly through the night.

Flitting in the shadows, Yrqemm spins up a magical aegis of protection for himself and his familiar while moving towards the source of the flickering...

Pausing for only a moment, Faileh looks around stopping his glance on each companion. He doesn't say anything this time, but the expression on his face grows more grim as they approach the fire.

And as you draw closer, you see they appear to be skeletons, skeletons on fire.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "Do they look like they are supposed to be on fire?;D I.e. are they just standing there radiating flames or are they lookingl ike it's sucking for them?" <OOC> Aurala says, "no looks like radiating flames" <OOC> Yrqemm nods. "Cool. Any signs of any non skeletal beings?" <OOC> Aurala says, "yes something that might have been something that is burning in the center of them" <OOC> Faileh says, "How far out are we when we realize what they are?" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "And roughly how many are there, if we had to guesstimate?" <OOC> Aurala says, "about 60' cause they ar emaking a lot of light with their flames, and looks to be about 6." <OOC> Aurala says, "stealth if trying to be quiet" GAME: Aurala rolls 1d20: (10): 10 Yrqemm pages: want me to roll stealth again? <OOC> Faileh is not quiet. GAME: Rivalen rolls stealth: (11)+8: 19 <OOC> Yrqemm is not near Faileh. ;) GAME: Jolan rolls Stealth: (2)+5: 7 <OOC> Ketala is in half plate, and not quiet. <OOC> Faileh says, "How far can I throw my torch?" <OOC> Aurala says, "not sure really. its not very aerodynamic and hey are already on fire."

The skeletons do turn and looks towards you all.

<OOC> Faileh wasn't going to do it for any sort of effect other than throwing my torch. <OOC> Yrqemm says, "Treat it like throwing an axe?" <OOC> Rivalen says, "All? :P" <OOC> Yrqemm says, "err, a non throwing axe :)" Yrqemm pages: I haven't rolled stealth and i'm off to the right for flanking purposes, or so i hoped :) Did you want me to reroll stealth btw? <OOC> Aurala says, "more in the direction of the party. not really looking at anyone in particular, they don't see you yet." You paged Yrqemm with 'yes' GAME: Yrqemm rolls stealth to aurala: (11)+stealth to aurala: 11 GAME: Yrqemm rolls stealth: (1)+8: 9 (EPIC FAIL) to aurala Yrqemm pages: Woot :)

It is now Yrqemm's turn! Skeleton3-4 is next!

GAME: Note Flat-footed on Yrqemm ended. <OOC> Aurala says, "don't forget to pose Rivalen"

"Have at thee!" Rivalen yells as he bursts from the shadows and towards the burning skeleton. The flow strikes true, guided by his expert wrist and eye, but slim blades are not recommended for fighting skeletons and the damage is not as great as it could have been on something more human. As they retaliate he flows through soime acrobatic dodges, as one nears him he raises his blade up to try to parry, but he is not fast enough and it burns along his extended arm.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "Is it IC for me to know if they can be flanked/crit hit? If so, are they?" Yrqemm pages: in any case, i'll attack the same one, going for a dual strike with my quarterstaff <OOC> Aurala says, "would be a knowledge/religion roll" GAME: Yrqemm rolls knowledge/religion: Trained Use Only: 0 <OOC> Aurala says, "that would be a nope." <OOC> Yrqemm ;) Yrqemm pages: actaully, one second <OOC> Yrqemm says, "are they spread out or filing through towards us?" <OOC> Aurala says, "right now only two have moved and that was to attack Rivalen who charged up to them." <OOC> Yrqemm says, "but are they in an open area or do they all have to go through a narrower way? GAME: Note Flat-footed on Jolan ended.

Yrqemm sees the human charge in with a piercing weapon and, with a slight tsk, runs in after him, using the butt of his quarterstaff to try to hit the skeleton's head, but the flames are distracting and he misses, though he is now in position near the Swashbuckler.

As he's running in, the squirrel monkey jumps off to clamber out of melee range atop a mausoleum.

The two burning skeletons are engaged with Rivalen and now Yrqemm the other four move towards the rest, but they don't really move that fast.

GAME: Aurala advances the initiative order.

Yrqemm pages: won't the whip catch fire?? <OOC> Rivalen says, "IIRC they are immune to Intimidate(just to check)" <OOC> Aurala says, "to hit the wounded one would draw aoo. but you can move 5' and attack one of the ones coming closer." <OOC> Jolan says, "Sure, I'll hit one of the close ones." <OOC> Aurala says, "ketala"

Jolan takes a step towards an approaching skeleton, then lashes out with her whip. The whip wraps slightly around the undead's vertebrae, and as she pulls it back the entire spine comes with. "Ashes to ashes, you overcooked bonehead!" she laughs triumphantly.

Ketala eyes the skeletons, then slowly begins to pray, a hand reaching out, slapping Faileh on the back with a transfer of magical intent. "Go."

Feeling the spell charge his body gives Faileh a moment to relax before moving in on the three burning skeletons. As he moves in he holds his shield defensively and sword guarding his head. It seems that the magic helps because as he lashes out with his sword, it collides with the skull of one of the skeletons. Like the previous one, it explodes lightly burning his exposed skin.

He pauses a moment and then lunges in gracefully, the blade sending the skeleton down into charred bones, with another explosion scorching him with fire.

With a skeleton down and a few explosions dodged, Yr takes a different approach and pretends to step back, which draws the skeleton in for an upswing of the staff that connects with the skeleton's would-be crotch sending it flying back and shattering it into exploding bones in one motion, with the elf using the momentum to follow through and squat with one leg outstretched so the pieces fly over him while he scans for his next target.

It is now Faileh's turn! Rivalen is next!

As the remaining skeletons close in on Faileh, Jolan sidesteps a bit. "You're toast, skeleton!" she shouts, lashing with her whip. An extra flick of the wrist makes the lash dig deeper, and the skeleton detonates. "Guess I'm on a hot streak," she grins to the others in the party.

It is now Rivalen's turn! Skeleton1-2 is next!

<OOC> Aurala says, "rivalen. you are healed a bit. There is one still standing"

Ketala calmly strides through battle, pushing past explosions and people flailing this way and that. Another prayer on her lips, muttered under her breath. Slapping a hand onto Rivalen with a pulse of blue light. "Back in."

GAME: Aurala rolls 1d6: (6): 6 Yrqemm pages: Riv idle for 10m GAME: You damaged Faileh for 6 points. 17 remaining. <OOC> Rivalen says, "How far away is it?" <OOC> Aurala says, "20" Yrqemm pages: oh :p

A low growl begins to eminate from Faileh as he fends off bony fingers from reachng him. After the next one exploded next to him he takes on a completely defensive stance. His eyes are beginning to look more and more wild as he bares his teeth at the skeleton while he defends valiantly.

GAME: Aurala advances the initiative order.

     Round Three - Init 8.
It is now Jolan's turn! Ketala is next!

<OOC> Aurala says, "jolan"

Rivalen is looking rather the worse for wear, elegant clothing, skin and hair rather scorched and charred. As the dwarven woman touches him he offers a faint ghost of his usual bright smile "My thanks Madame" he says in a voice roughened by smoke and flame. Looking at the distance he lets his rapier fall and draws a dagger. He tosses in skilfully enough, but in the melee it bounces off the flaming thing and into the night.

Rising up and moving toward the remaining skeleton attacking the Myrrish noble, Yrqemm swings wildly and confidently with his staff held like a bat, aiming for the head, but takes his eye off the dome and misses at the last moment, almost losing his footing from the momentum..

<OOC> Jolan says, "If possible, I'll circle around to flank-from-reach the remaining skeleton. If I can't get there, I'll just attack from 15' out."

The final skeleton is trying to get Faileh but is't successful.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "Ah, my bad, misunderstood he was going for Rivalen." <OOC> Aurala says, "you can't cause Yrq is there. so just from 15' out." <OOC> Aurala says, "it is ok" GAME: Jolan rolls WhipAtk: aliased to Finesse+2: (14)+9+2: 25 <OOC> Aurala says, "hit" GAME: Jolan rolls WhipDmg+Precise: aliased to 1d3+Dexterity+1+Swashbuckler: (2)+5+1+4: 12 <OOC> Aurala says, "hurts a little" GAME: Aurala advances the initiative order.

     Round Three - Init 7.
It is now Ketala's turn! Faileh is next!

<OOC> Aurala says, "ketala"

Jolan cirles around, striking the last skeleton from a distance. Bones crack from the lash, but the firey undead still stands. "Looks like I started taking it easy too soon," she quips.

<OOC> Ketala says, "Hit it with my hammer." <OOC> Ketala says, "Maybe...unlikely, we will try." GAME: Ketala rolls 1d20+3+3: (5)+3+3: 11 <OOC> Aurala says, "miss" GAME: Aurala advances the initiative order.

     Round Three - Init 6.
It is now Faileh's turn! Rivalen is next!

GAME: Aurala rolls 1d6: (3): 3 GAME: You damaged Faileh for 3 points. 14 remaining.

Ketala lashes out with her hammer, she could afford not to bring magic energy down with this little to go. Unfortunetly, she simply cannot get a good shot in.

<OOC> Faileh is going to power attack. <OOC> Aurala says, "faileh, you have the one that is wounded in front of you and Yrq is behind it so you could get flanking" GAME: Faileh rolls 1d20+8: (15)+8: 23 GAME: Faileh rolls 1d8+8: (8)+8: 16 Faileh pages: take 2 off of that damage. Faileh pages: should have been +6 <OOC> Aurala says, "dead" <OOC> Aurala says, "will be free pose after faileh's pose"

Faileh begins to froth at the mouth as the flaming skeleton's proximity is slowly cooking him. He forgoes his defensive posture and lashes out with a single powerful blow. Using all of his weight behind the attack, it lands cleanly on the top of the skull and the sheer force behind it drives his blade nearly into the ground below. The skeleton explodes and Faileh begins to let out a low laugh.

<OOC> Aurala says, "free poses and in a couple I will d a wrap up"

"They..." Rivalen begins with true feeling in his voice "...were decidely unpleasant" he says with a glance over his mostly ruined clothing. He lets out an entirely genuine sigh at the current state of him, then at the frothing of the large man he bends to scoop up his rapier again. Just in case.

Judging that apart from Faileh going insane, it appears that things are under control, Yrqemm spins around slowly, one hand out, the other holding his staff at the ready parallel to the ground.

When all is said and done, he will congratulate everyone and, after letting his monkey climb back on his shoulder, help with ensuring that the dead stay dead, that the wounded are helped and that nothing goes unlooted--err, to waste.

<OOC> Yrqemm says, "Thanks for the rp y'all. and thanks again Aurala for your time and pateince. And sorry Rivalen if my dry humour bummed you out. *waves*."

Ketala snorts a little, her voice still even, face passive. "Wounded."

"Well done, everyone!" Jolan beams. "You are all skilled fighters, although it looks like we could use more practice at fire-dancing." She stomps on a few embers that were lingering on the ground, and keeps an eye out for further trouble. That does seem to be the end of them. They are staying down too. You nurse your wounds a bit, but there doesn't seem to be anything else around.

Yrqemm has disconnected.

"I wonder if I could send my tailors bill to whomever raised them" Rivalen says, a faint smile tilting one side of his mouth. He joins in the poking about but as it seems they are staying dead he wraps his cloak around him a bit tighter as the chill starts to set in "Rather unsporting of them to explode I have to say"

Taking in a deep breath and slowly letting it out, Faileh stands up straight and regains his composure. Sheathing his sword he goes to retrieve the torch he had dropped. "Almost lost it. Almost." he says as his face is sanguine from a mixture of the fire and near-rage. He, too, peers about looking for any sign of what may have caused this.

"None? Good." Ketala nods her head once. Crinkling her nose as she goes to poke about some. Looking over the local graves and tombs, looking for desecration.

Faileh walks over to Ketala as she searches and puts his hand on her shoulder. "Thank you for your aid, it gave me the calm I needed." He is back to holding the torch and assists with the searching of suspicious things.

<OOC> Faileh says, "Like the middle of the bonfire they were dancing around. :D"

There are supplies, used that show signs that someone did summon these things. Rivalen glances at the supplies curiously, but cannot make head nor tails of them "Anyone more scholarly than myself..." he says with a glance down at them then up to the party "...of course you would be hard pressed to find anyone less so" he admits ruefully.

<OOC> Faileh has nature knowledge so if they are from the wild... <OOC> Aurala says, "would be arcane or religion" <OOC> Rivalen says, "We need my alt here :P" <OOC> Aurala says, "it is pretty much wrap up, I can do a finishing pose if ready to finish" <OOC> Faileh lets others pose before doing his head out pose. Faileh pages: btw, thank you for letting me join this. I am really glad to be back playing again after so many years. I do appreciate DMs putting in the time. :D <OOC> Rivalen is fine with wrapping up <OOC> Jolan is good with wrapping up. <OOC> Faileh does his pose now then. <OOC> Ketala says, "^_^"

At This point there really isn't too much to see. Whoever did the summoning is long gone and there are only few signs of what they did, no way to really tell who did it. All that is left is to report to the innkeeper and get paid. He thanks you all and gives you another round of drinks on the house after.

<OOC> Aurala says, "sorry hit enter too soon, will put your pose in before mine Faileh"

Collecting the supplies that they suspect were used for these abominations, Faileh says to the group, "An honest day's work, so lets go get our pay." With that he heads back towards the exit of the cemetary and to their employer.
