Players: Divada, Azog, Eleria, Melon, Rainbowbeam, Jeor

This scene was DC.

Tonight's quest, given by the Explorer's Guild, is quite perilous. Though many present tonight have successfully foiled one of the mysterious kidnappings, it's been confirmed by the wizard Divada that the perpetrators are Dretch, demons from the Abyss bound to kidnap children and helpless people from frontier houses on the edge of the Deep Woods for undoubtedly nefarious reasons. So a reward has been posted for whoever can successfully find the source of these kidnappings and bring them to justice!

The quest brings those who have accepted it to the charred remains of a farmhouse. The night is starless and dark, save for the silvery light of the full moon as it filters through the heavy clouds. The wrecked farmhouse stands, angular, twisted and dark in relief against the inky shadows of the woods. It's been several hours' journey on horseback out here, and the lack of night's light makes it all the more gloomy.

<OOC> Eleria says, "What are the rules on posing?"

<OOC> Azog says, "Usually it's free posing until the DM calls for a time stop."

<OOC> Eleria says, "Gotcha"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Yeah, free pose, do rule of three for now; big scene. I'll throw in poses when it calls for one."

<OOC> Azog says, "Rule of three?"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "You can pose after three other people have posed."

Eleria stays near the back of the group, the shortest member of the group pearing around the taller, more imposing folk. She narrows her angled eyes in the darkness, staying close up next giant knight, her longbow drawn and ready. The frail elf looks nervous. "That's the place? It doesn't look like much..."

Azog is riding astride his heavy warhorse, shield strapped to his arm, guiding the mount with his knees. It's not as simple as it looks, with heavy armor and a massive shield, but it's better than getting jumped and killed at unawares, and this promises to be dangerous, so he's doubly wary. Mind, it's tough to be wary with a full helm, even with the visor up, but he does his best. At least he has Darkvision, so he can see his surroundings reasonably well, moonlight or no. He'll ride at the front (unless someone else would rather), but in any event, he's there to soften the brunt of any ambush. Quietly, he replies, "Well, they're not going to hang out in crowded areas." He looks over the ground in case there are any tracks or signs that would show recent occupation.

As she arrives on horseback, Divada grumbles softly as she sees the farmhouse off of it's foundation (thank you low light vision). She sighs as she slips off of her saddle. "Dammit." She grumbles in Elven, looking around. "Gareth's not gonna be happy about this." She says softly as she looks to Azog. "Looks like I was right, as much as I hate to say it."

Melon, for her part, stays close to Divada, clutching the reins tightly. "I guess that makes sense..." The half-elf doesn't look too comfortable there, but one must help and make friends, after all.

Jeor has finaly procured a proper steed that can carry him this time but even then it doesnt bear him as easily as it would others. When the group arrives at the ruins he dismounts and unslings his shield and longsword. "I dont know, perhaps something bigger has destroyed the barn in favor of kidnapping?" Jeor raises his visor and approaches the burned barn to look for tracks or signs of what happened.

Hearthguard Rainbowbeam changed out of some of her more ceremonially functional clothes into a sort of chainmail of some kind. Shined and expertly crafted, it gleams over her shoulder, her blue doublet carrying Althea's emblem. Dark blue breeches help complete the more mobile look. The only real concession to her normal garb is her headband, her glasses, and the dog, Sunshine following foofily at her side,"Make sure to bark real loud if you smell or hear anything, okay? The big dog 'yarp's in agreement,"And then, if fighting starts, make sure you go hide, okay?" In her hands? A very big crossbow. Her bill is actually lashed to her back for a change,"A crime against hearth and home." She looks to Jeor,"What do you make of this, Sunblade?"

There are tracks, easy enough to make out even in this half-light: big clawed footprints, broken branches, even claw-marks against trees. It's clear that whatever was here got what it came for, torched the place and ran for it. Whoever or whatever it was clearly didn't seem to understand that it could be followed so easily.

<OOC> Divada says, "Can I roll knowledge nature or make some sort of check to see if they're the same type of claw print as the Dretches?"

ooc Roll me knowledge/planes if you have it!

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Roll me knowledge/planes if you have it!"

ooc Goes for everyone.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Goes for everyone."

<OOC> Eleria says, "No dice, here."

<OOC> Divada doesn't have it, but rolls it anyways.

Eleria slides awkwardly off the saddle of her loaned horse, and she takes a moment to adjust the lay of her Hide armor on her body. As Jeor approaches the house, the red-haired elf looks nervous. She glances back to the rest of the party with her bottom lip caught between her teeth. Still, taking a bracing breath, she starts to follow Jeor...

And stops when she spots those tracks. The druid hisses quietly to her companions, and kneels to get a better look. "Got something..." She follows the tracks around, touching trees that are scratched, seeking out some kind of destination. "Divada, what do you make of these?"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Go for it."

Jeor drops his visor and shakes his head "Whatever it was it looks big, I think we should form up and follow on foot so we dont miss the tracks in the dark..." the halfgiant suggests but even on the ride he doesnt seem the most comfortable on his horse so that may influence his motives.

GAME: Jeor rolls knowledge/planes: (11)+knowledge/planes: 11

You paged Eleria with 'Nope, it's nothing natural that you know of. It's distinctly /unnatural/ - it doesn't belong here.'

You paged (Jeor, Rainbowbeam) with 'Well it certainly doesn't look like any natural tracks you know of.'

To (Jeor, Phanuel), Rainbowbeam pages: Wonder twin powers, activate: Form of - Confused priestess!

Azog shoulders his shield to slip off the horse, then brings it around again and gets it set; pointing out the clawed footprints in case anyone missed them, he grumbles. "No idea what could have made those," he admits in heavily-accented Tradespeak, "but I'll bet a chest full of platinum that it's not going to be our friend." He'll advance with Jeor, nodding in agreement about advancing on foot. "Better footing for everyone, I think. I'm a good rider, but it's hard with a shield this large.

Melon too slides off her horse as they approach, smiling a little at the fluffy dog. But that amusement is short-lived, as the half-elf, decked out in her work leathers, pulls her goggles down over her eyes and takes her ray apparatus in hand. Her fingers flex nervously. "Alright. Tracks. Big tracks. Always fun..."

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "Oh, before we get to battle, I should do this..."

GAME: Rainbowbeam refreshes spells.

<OOC> Melon says, "How...do I prepare my death ray?"

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "It is a death ray. Just count your uses, I believe."

Rainbowbeam looks to Jeor at this,"I agree. Nothing I recognize anyway. Are you having trouble seeing? Extend your sword, or something, and I shall set it alight for you. " Her attention is already wandering, though, as she looks to her dog,"Sunshine. Do you smell anything?" Sunshine, being a large, foofy house dog... Just woofs. Probably wondering when his crazy mistress is going to give him a bone.

<OOC> Phanuel holds his pose until you guys set out. :)

Jeor keeps close to Azog as they advance but raises his visor to look over his shoulder at the others. "Stay close and report /anything/ unusual, even if you think you might be jumping at shadows... because it could be a giant killer shadow." the halfgiant says sternly before closing his visor again. "I can see in the low light well enough but if someone else needs it, it may be usefull." he says answering Rainbowbeam before getting ready to follow the tracks.

"It's the Dretches." Divada says as Eleria calls her over to look at the tracks. "After our first encounter here, I started to research them." She then looks to Jeor. "they ARE evil, Jeor. Very evil." She then looks at everyone else. "If there are more here, then we'll need to watch ourselves. Oh, and show them no mercy. Don't worry about killing them."

"These tracks are definitely unnatural, so you're probably right," Eleria says to Divada, a scowl of disgust on her face, sniffing briefly at tree bark. Nodding at the suggestion to go on foot, she points her bow at the tracks, following them with her eye off to where they disappear from sight. "Looks like whoever made these went..." Which way did they go? Still, puppy's antics does get a brief smile out of the stoic elf. "He might be hungry."

Azog grunts in agreement with Jeor and advances, his own visor up to give his Darkvision as much to work with as possible. He keeps his sword sheathed for the moment, watching the trail carefully. "I can follow it easily enough. The question is, is whatever we're following the same as what we fought before, or something different? I think perhaps it doesn't care if it's followed." He moves forward just the same, not hesitating in the face of danger, his jaw set.

Rainbowbeam looks around for a moment, looks over at Jeor, then shrugs and reaches down to tap the dog's collar. Instant Dog-torch. The dog woofs happily... and begins sniffing at Eleria when 'hungry' is mentioned. Maybe she has a treat? The dog obviously does not commonly miss meals. She begins moving her fingers through the motions of another spell, but holds onto it when it is almost through. "Lead on, on expert protectors, Sunblade." To Elaria? "Feel free to feed Sunshine. He's not picky. He's also an unapologetic glutton."

Melon turns her eyes out, and ears out, to listen closely for any shadows to jump at. She follows them, weapon in hand. "What exactly are these things that you guys...fought...before?"

Rainbowbeam pages: Holding the spell 'protection from evil'.

[RPOne] Rainbowbeam says, "The dog is now shedding light as per a torch. <_< >_>"

Looking to Melon and Eleria in turn, Divada sums it up as she starts to walk. "Think of the most disgusting, hairy and bloated bear you've ever seen, then make it ugly. Then you have a Dretch. However, they are not native to our 'plane of existence', and like to kidnap children for sport." She then looks to Jeor. "And you know I don't like things that kidnap children."

[RPOne] Divada actually....has that spell on perma-ready. XD

Eleria beams when the dog comes up to her, and she scratches vigorously behind Sunshine's ears. "Sorry, boy, I don't have anything on me. You protect us just fine, and we'll get you food when we get back, okay?" She puts her finger to her lips, before starting to shadow the bigger meatshields. Melon's question gets a baffled shrug. "I do not know," she whispers, eyes turning up to the trees around them. Divada's description gets her to frown. "What do they look like?"

"Horrid. Bears aren't meant to be ugly. How big are they? Can they climb trees?" Ohhh, that's a worrisome thought. "And...what do they do with the children?"

It's easy enough to see where they lead deeper off into the woods - from the looks of it there was more than one of these things. The tree branches hang low in the forest; the decision to make the rest of the journey on foot is a good one. The party's druid is right at home out here, slipping past thorns, brambles and low-hanging branches with natural ease. The rest of the party may not be so lucky, and the going is slow. This is untamed wilderness, after all.

The tracks connect up with other tracks at some points, as it seems there were others; the claw and foot-marks are fairly small, but long and floppy, and their step is heavy on the earth. After about a half-hour of walking, an acrid stench reaches your nostrils; the unmistakable smell of death. Those with sight in the dark can make out a cave entrance in the side of a rocky outcropping, not far from where you now stand. All of the tracks lead in and out of there. Corpses, humanoid and animal alike, are strewn about like so much refuse near the entrance... a few of them are children of various races and ages, the rest adults or animals, a couple of wolves, several deer. All of them have had their hearts ripped out of their chests, and a look of terror is frozen into their glassy eyes. The religious among the party can feel the taint of evil emanating from the cave - even the air and earth feel tainted.

As the stench reaches Melon's nose, the half-elf gags and claps a hand over her nose. "Ugh! What is...wha...oh gods." It only takes a few moments of horrified staring before she can avert her eyes, wrinkling her nose. "That's horrid," she squeaks, white-knuckling her death ray and gesturing at the nearest mangled, bloody corpse.

Azog casts a long shadow before him as the dog's collar lights up, and he shrugs. "So much for the cover of darkness," he mumbles, and now he does draw the blade at his hip. It glows faintly, much less than the torch, but anything lit can be seen forever in the dark of night. Walking without comment on into the woods until they reach the edge of the cave, he halts at that point and whispers, "Are you all ready?" Whatever he might think of the sight of the carnage, he remains silent on the issue.

Eleria gives a little squeak of distress when that smell hits her nose, and she puts a hand over her nose. "Oh, Earth Mother..." she says quietly at the sight of the corpses all around them, expression drawn tight. "This is a sick, unnatural place. Too much death..." Bringing her hand down from her mouth, the elf swallows and closes her eyes. Her silhouette in the darkness shivers as feathers sprout from the side of her head. She lets out a breath, notching her bow and peering towards the cave entrance, then back at the group, hesitantly. This is the point of no return. Also, nose.

Jeor looks around and the corpses and shakes his head "I smell some kind of ritual, keep close aim for anything that looks priestly." looking at Azog he takes a deep breath "Lets go say hello." he raises his sword and shield next to Azog, hoping to be half the wall his fellow warrior is.

Keeping mostly to the back of the pack, Divada takes a bit to actually see the cave, until everyone is right on top of it. She covers her mouth and nose so she doesn't have to smell the stench of death. "Well, you did ask what they were doing with the children." There is a growl in her voice by now, but she seems to agree with Jeor. "And say goodbye to them."

Frowny face indeed. Rainbowbeam's face is mostly livid. "Those are children... CHILDREN. Althea shall vent her motherly wrath this day and see to it that every last monster among them is slain. This I promise." She nods to Azog, then moves to stand close behind Jeor,"When the battle starts, I shall imbue you with Althea's protection, Sunblade." She lifts her voice a little more,"Don't be afraid to call out, any of you, if you are injured." She turns her concentration inward, small sparks of divine energy jumping the gap between her fingers.

Eleria snorts quietly, giving Rainbowbeam an appreciative look. "Let's provide a gift of unnatural blood to our gods tonight, sister." At the mention of getting injured, Eleria pats the healing wand stuck into her belt, making sure it's still there. "Ready." Still, she's not going to be the first to step into that nasty cave...

<OOC> Eleria says, "Scuse me a moment. Testing out +roll"

GAME: Eleria rolls weapon1+1: (4)+4+1: 9

Melon adds her own frowny face. "Heave ho, then," she murmurs. Though Eleria gets a little side-glance there. "Let's give 'em hell." This is the best pose ever.

<OOC> Eleria laughs!

<OOC> Melon is totally with it.

GAME: Eleria casts Aspect of the Falcon.

<OOC> Eleria says, "I should probably actually cast the spell, instead of just posing it."

<OOC> Melon says, "MEBBE"

Azog nods curtly to Rainbowbeam, but says, "You cannot expect honor from these creatures. They will give no quarter, nor ask it." He steels himself and moves forward, mumbling a few Yrch words to honor his ancestors as he proceeds into the cave. To Jeor, he simply agrees, "We shall slay them." His footsteps are heavy, his armor clanks and scrapes as the heavy plates shift with each step, but he advances steadfastly, though he does pause to leave his horse tied to a tree outside the cave.

The cave is completely dark at the entrance, and if it were not for the light of Azog's glowing weapon no one would be able to see anything - Sunshine, Rainbowbeam's faithful dog, is visibly shaken by what she sees here, and bolts away to dig a little burrow to hide in until her master returns. The entrance is steep and slick, and only wide enough for two abreast - Azog and Jeor can barely squeeze in together side by side. Though it's still possible to find your footing as you all walk down it is by no means easy or convenient.

The entrance smooths out as it nears the entrance, and the faint glow of mana-lamps can be seen in what must be the cave proper. Inside the cieling is about twenty feet tall, and every little sound seems to echo. There's a pool of water that slowly collects dripping water from the ceiling in that part, forming a calcified lip over the rock. On the other side of the cave is a desk covered in parchments, a small but comfortable-looking bed and what looks like a rough altar covered in bloody runes.

Most importantly, in the center of the room there stands a shocking creature. He stands tall, fairly well-muscled but not He-Man strong like Jeor or Azog. His skin is blue and scaled; his eyes burn red like coals and two horns grow out of his forehead. Large, bat-like wings spread out behind him. His body is dressed in robes of garish orange and there's a longsword at his belt. There's a smirk on his face as the party makes their way down. "Took you long enough," he says, his basso voice low and sinister. "Have you come to dance, little fools? I'm so glad you came - my minions are rather inefficient. I prefer to do these things myself."

As they approach the cave, Eleria lowers her bow briefly to draw a hand over her magically enhanced eyes, peering off into the dimness of the cave. She comes up behind the giant, peering around him at that desk...so she actually misses the occupant until he talks. She squeaks in surprise, jumping back a step and bringing her bow up to bear on the speaker, eyes wide and her hands trembling just a little. Eep! Scary! "Th-things?"

GAME: Eleria casts Detect Magic.

<OOC> Eleria says, "What's up?"

Rainbowbeam frowns and reaches out to put a hand on the armor at Jeor's back to release the magic into him and says to him simply,"Go get him, Sunblade. The time for Mercy has passed." She flicks her eyes to the blood-covered altar with its awful runes and blanches as she narrows her eyes trying to read it. She lifts her voice to the man in robes,"I don't suppose that you would care very much, sir, if I told you you did a horrid thing."

GAME: Rainbowbeam casts Protection From Evil.

You paged Eleria with 'There's necromantic magic everywhere - it's probably a Desecrate spell.'

Eleria pages: Good to know! Thanks!

To (Jeor, Phanuel), Rainbowbeam pages: +2 deflection bonus to Ac, +2 resistance bonus to saves, and a second saving throw against effects that possess or exercise mental control, summoned evil creatures also can't touch him with natural attacks unless he attacks them first.

"There's necromantic magic everywhere," Eleria whispers to the group in those tense moments before the attack, "The demon has desecrated this whole place with evil magic," she says, acid dripping off her tongue as she says that.

[RPOne] Rainbowbeam says, "What's everyone's ac looking like?"

[RPOne] Melon says, "12, here."

Keeping towards the back, as usual, Divada shakes her head as she looks around, and growling at the horned speaker. She doesn't say anything to him, for she knew it would not listen to reason at all. However, she figured this was the source of the dretch menace.

Jeor grimaces under his helmet and grips his sword tighter "The justice of the Platinum Dragon will not be denied. It matters not what evils you have brought forth, the light of the Shining One will always find you and destroy you."

Azog walks forward into the lit chamber, and he scans around for signs of ambush as the creature greets them with a challenge. "We have come to slay you," he replies, looking back over his shoulder to Eleria and asking, "So, can we do anything about it?" But for his part, once he sees that there are no other ambushers, he'll rush forward and attack before the thing can prepare itself further.

Melon brings up the back with Divada, still clutching her nose. When the creature speaks, she jumps and fumbles on her ray gun again, until she's holding it with both hands, squeaking. This is a battle-hardened warrior, this one is.

"I cannot," Eleria whispers, "It's a magic that's beyond my power to counter. Perhaps other divine magic..." She steadies her arrow with a breath, readying herself to fire at the first sign of combat.

<OOC> Eleria readies an action.

A thin smile spreads across the demonic humanoid's features, and at the heroes' comments he laughs openly, harsh and mocking. "Oh, I'm hurt," he sneers. "You don't like my redecorating? I only tried to make the place feel a bit more... homey." His wings twitch and flap restlessly, and he rests his palm on the hilt of his longsword. When Azog rushes in his expression turns into a snarl and with a buffeting of his wings he soars up to the cieling, barking laughter down at the groundlings. "You've walked into your deaths, fools! Your pain will be LEGENDARY!"

A second later he's muttering words in an arcane tongue and gesturing; once he's done a dretch pops into existence beneath his feet. It hisses at Azog, ready to fight! At the same time, a disgusting little imp-like creature seems to leap off of the demon-man's back, flying at his side.

Combat begins!

Azog ignores the dretch for the moment. If it's like the ones the other day, it wasn't any sort of threat to him but took a lot of effort to kill, and he really feels the need to concentrate on this creature rather than spending time wailing futilely on something that's unlikely to hurt him. And his patience pays off quickly as Rainbowbeam's command sends it tumbling. Azog is off the mark quickly, charging towards the creature and swinging his blade down, the faintly glowing steel striking the creature and injuring it.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Swing and a miss!"

GAME: Divada refreshes spells.

<OOC> Eleria sits with Divada in the "missed my ranged attack" corner.

GAME: Divada casts Scorching Ray.

Sticking close to the entrance, Divada walks her way away from the entrance and tries to fire a scorching ray at the fleeing dretch, despite holding her hand over her mouth to keep out the noxious fumes. She misses horribly though.

Melon isn't so good at keeping her cool against those fumes, and she claps a hand over her mouth and nose, doubling over. "Oh, gods," she utters, looking a little green around the gills.

Eleria fires off an arrow as soon as the demon flies up into the air, but it misses and she runs for cover, finding it behind the bespattered altar. Azog is only inconvenienced for a flash as Rainbowbeam's command causes the demon's wings to lock up and send him plummeting; his and Jeor's swords find purchase in his scaly flesh, running him through. At that moment the quasit screeches, causing a wave of panic to spread through the cave, but Our Heroes maintain their cool. They don't quite maintain their composure when the dretch jumps past Azog, who lops its arm off but doesn't quite kill it, and unleashes a noxious cloud of horrible fumes that has half the party reeling. A new round begins!

<OOC> Phanuel says, "The 'Stinking Cloud' remains another round. I don't need new fort saves from you, do I?"

<OOC> Eleria | This condition lasts as long as the creature is in the cloud and for 1d4+1 rounds after it leaves. (Roll separately for each nauseated character.) Any creature that succeeds on its save but remains in the cloud must continue to save each round on your turn.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Okay. Eleria! You're not actually in the cloud. >_> What are you going to do?"

<OOC> Eleria says, "Hmmm... Gonna fire an arrow at the Quasit."

<OOC> Eleria says, "Sounds like a pokemon move."

GAME: Azog rolls 1d20+9: (6)+9: 15

You paged (Lahar, Whirlpool) with 'That one spell, command, completely ruined it. >_>'

<OOC> Azog says, "Plus whatever for hitting a prone person"

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "I think they just have, like, a -4 to ac."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "It's not a plus, it's a -4 to his AC. That misses, Az."

<OOC> Azog says, "Roger."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "RB! What're you doing?"

<OOC> Eleria says, "Just to make sure we're all on the same page: Everyone in the cloud can only see 5 feet in front of them, right? And everyone has concealment."

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "... Moving out of the cloud. I'm pretty sure that's all I can do. :D"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Yeah, it's just like fog cloud."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Jeor! Running out of the cloud?"

Azog swings at the dretch going by, purely by reflex, forgetting he was trying to hold his swing to harry the bad guy from getting up. His blade strikes true on the dretch for what that's worth, his mighty arm and long blade making for a hearty strike against the creature, though not really accomplishing what he'd hoped. Then he coughs as he gets a whiff of the scent it's releasing, coughing harder and trying not to sick up. Swinging through the hazy mist of putrescence and his own attempt at holding his bile down, Azog is unable to hit the creature.

<OOC> Jeor says, "Pretty much"

<OOC> Jeor says, "Thats me."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "K, Divada, you're in a cloud of smelly fog. Gonna run out and cast something?"

Jeor is blindsided by the stink of the thing, he has been in sewers and worse but the demon emits an unholy stink. All the halfgiant can do to keep from drowning in his helmet is stumbling a few feet and raising his visor to expell his breakfast.

<OOC> Divada says, "Yeah. See if I can't hit that dretch with a force missile."

GAME: Azog rolls 1d20+9: (3)+9: 12

<OOC> Azog cries.!

<OOC> Phanuel says, "You just miss!"

Divada moves her way out of the cloud and throws a force missile at the last place where the dretch was. She hits it, but it seems to shrug it off. "Damn. Spell resistance."

You paged Eleria with 'All DR? Even DR that specifically says DR/something that isn't magic?'

Eleria pages: I believe so. | The numerical part of a creature's damage reduction (or DR) is the amount of damage the creature ignores from normal attacks.

Eleria pages: That tells me that only is affected by weapon attacks.

[RPOne] Jeor says, "Shouldnt there be a caster level chekc involved with spell resistance or did I just miss it?"

[RPOne] Divada says, "I dunno. I can't seem to hit for anything tonight, like Azog in the last leg."

page eleria=Well, okay.

You paged Eleria with 'Well, okay.'

From afar, Eleria shrugs. "I was with you, at first. Makes sense that force effects should be limited by DR."

[RPOne] Jeor says, "Wasnt it a magic missle though? Normally I wouldnt nitpick but when its a death concent scene I want every scrap I can get. :("

r1 Okay, I was corrected on a rule: DR is overcome by magic damage. So RB didn't get hit because the dretch is dead!

[RPOne] Phanuel says, "Okay, I was corrected on a rule: DR is overcome by magic damage. So RB didn't get hit because the dretch is dead!"

[RPOne] Rainbowbeam says, "Winner!"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Now that Nyzoth is up, however, he's trying to fly up to the cieling."

ooc Do you have combat reflexes azog?

Rainbowbeam pages: DR, as a rule, only applies to weapon damage. And magic weapons also almost always bypass all types of DR unless they're damage-typed DR, like 5/slash, piercing, bludgeoning.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Do you have combat reflexes azog?"

page rainbowbeam=:nods, I was corrected.

Long distance to Rainbowbeam: Phanuel nods, I was corrected.

Rainbowbeam pages: Okay. ^_^

============================

<OOC> Divada says, "What about Melon?"

<OOC> Divada says, "or are we just moving her out of the cloud?"

<OOC> Eleria nods

<OOC> Melon wants to move out of the cloud!

From afar, to (Whirlpool, Phanuel): Lahar's sure you're doin' fine. :3

Melon staggers backwards, and tries to turn, to run away from the noxious stench in whatever direction she can. She gags, clutching her mouth tightly, trying hard not to retch.

<OOC> Melon says, "There >.>"

Most of the party runs away from the cloud, either moving closer to Nyzoth or to either side of the cave, breaking up the tight bunching that they once had. Eleria fires off an arrow at the Quasit, which barely scratches it. Meanwhile Divada smashes the dretch into nonexistence but when Azog attempts to lay into the demon-man the uncanny monster manages to roll out of the way of the crushing blow, standing up and flying to the ceiling once again, looking haggard and dripping a foul-smelling ichor. A new round hath begun!

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Because I'm being nice, the nauseated condition is gone and so is the cloud. ^_^"

<OOC> Azog cheers!

<OOC> Eleria says, "yay!"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "So, Eleria! What're you doing?"

<OOC> Eleria says, "Is the Quasit within 30 feet? I take it it's up in Divada's face."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Yup, it just scratched her really bad."

<OOC> Divada says, "yeah it did. Killing it would help me out a lot. XD"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "You're within 30 feet of the quasit yes."

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "Oh, forgot to blow this."

GAME: Rainbowbeam casts Command.

<OOC> Eleria says, "He is "buffeted by winds and rain" and takes nonlethal damage, and -2 to attack for one round."

GAME: Eleria rolls 1d6+1: (4)+1: 5

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Sweet. Azog!"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Don't you have javelins or something?"

<OOC> Azog says, "I do, but I'd have to sheathe the sword and draw the javelin and I wouldn't attack til next round."

<OOC> Azog says, "Is there another creature on the ground still up?"

<OOC> Divada says, "the quasit on me."

Eleria, still scowling from the almost nonexistent damage she did to the flying menace, cranes her head up as it attacks the wizard. Rising up just a bit behind her cover, she yells, "Earth Mother's wrath will bring you your doom, demon!" She thrusts a hand out, and a blast of wind and rain springs forth, striking the flying creature and knocking it about as it hovers in the air.

<OOC> Eleria says, "The Quasit should be within melee reach."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "It is. Want to run and hit it?"

<OOC> Azog says, "Yes. Can I charge?"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Go for it."

GAME: Azog rolls 1d20+11: (1)+11: 12

<OOC> Azog says, "Or, nevermind."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Swing and a miss!"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "RB! Whatcha gonna do?"

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "Okay. I eyeball the Quasit with my Althean 'You're grounded' stare, then cast Cause Fear on the quasit."

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "Will save."

Azog's perserverance is strong, staying in the cloud to try and fight the monster, but the stink is so strong that he can't fight effectively at all, swinging wildly and completely missing as the thing rises to his feet and unable to stop it as it climbs into the air. It seems to have really thrown off Azog's concentration, and he tries to recenter himself, brow furrowing in concentration, which is a lot easier as the stinky cloud dissipates. There must be some kind of airflow through the cavern. With the one creature out of reach, he'll charge the quasit, but he hasn't completely gotten past the confusion of the cloud and his charge almost winds up in disaster, pulling his swing at the last moment, his blade striking the floor with a spark.

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "I think they're right. So unless he's got penalties... He's not."

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "He IS shaken, though."

<OOC> Phanuel nods, got it.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Jeor!"

Rainbowbeam finishes coughing up dinner, then straightens, wiping her mouth. She traces more glowing, silvery blue sigils in the air, chops her hand through it, and points at the Quasit,"Althea's eye be upon you! Fear, evil thing, and flee!"

<OOC> Jeor says, "Drop my sword, unlash my shield (move action) and draw heavy crossbow."

<OOC> Phanuel nods. The quasit is going to now try and leap on Azog's face!

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Divada, what're you gonna do?"

Peril! In an attempt to get the quasit away from Divada, Eleria invokes the wrath of storm and buffets the flying beastie about with lashing wind and rain from out of nowhere! Meanwhile Azog attempts to charge the little thing and misses, Rainbowbeam shakes it to the core with holy power; it unsuccessfully tries to bite Azog's face, but as it is far too bewildered it does nothing of the sort. Divada's ray blasts the cave wall, loosening a couple of stalactites. Meanwhile Nyzoth unleashes unholy energies beneath the feet of Melon and Rainbowbeam, sapping the very life energies from them! The Artificer manages to raise her death ray and pummel Nyzoth with electricity, bringing him to the brink of death before she collapses. New round!

Clutching at her Leg as she staggers back, Divada grits her teeth, but shakes her head and grins at the devil like guy. "Bellifix arcanum!" She cries out and throws two blue bolts at the thing, striking it in the chest hard.......

... and he falls to the ground with a horrible roar and a sickening thud. When he looks up, however, he smiles. With the last life left in him, he manages to croak out the words, "CLONED. KILL... YOU ALL!" before he expires.

[RPOne] Eleria says, "Hoo boy, that doesn't sound good."

[RPOne] Rainbowbeam says, "... Crap. Clones."

[RPOne] Divada goes to find Commander Cody and Captain Rex.

[RPOne] Azog says, "Would a monster who gets ganked by a level 2-5 party really have a clone?"

[RPOne] Rainbowbeam says, "Maybe we just caught him on a bad day and he was coughing up blood, so what he said was: "I'm too stoned for this." But we heard "Cloned" from all the burbling."

[RPOne] Azog says, "That's entirely reasonable. Both explantions. ;)"

[RPOne] Jeor says, "Perhaps XD"

[RPOne] Phanuel says, "Maybe he just wants you to live in fear of his return when he's probably going to be flambe'd in the Abyss for all eternity now."

You paged (Lahar, Whirlpool) with 'The truth is he's got a demonic patron who wants to use him to summon demons to the material plane, so he's got him a battery of clones.'

Azog looks around to survey the scene as the last bad guys drop. He's mildly chagrinned that he didn't get to face down the boss monster - both his own failure to take it out while it was on the ground, and the inability to get into the air to combat it. He'll have to do something about it. He could have tossed his blade aside to use the javelins, but he's not so eager to cast the weapon aside. At the dying threat, Azog simply retorts, "Bring it, foul creature. And you will face the same end as today."

Melon slowly forces herself up to sitting, still loosely clutching her ray gun. "Diwegillit?" she slurs, goggles askew. She looks over at the druid sitting next to her, for confirmation.

And like that, the man is dead,"Bastard got what he deserved. OKAY. Injured? Form a queue and I'll get you all up and running." She raises her hand and with a deep breath, clenches her fist, as a wave of energy cascades from her, pulsing multiple times,"Althea, lay your comforting hands upon your children! They are in need of your tender mercies!" And then? Rainbow eyes Divada, pulling a case of some sort from her belongings. She shoves a handful of leaves at Divada and orders,"Chew this child, and don't stop until the fatigued feeling leaves you."

Eleria rushes over to Melon when she falls, pulling out her wand...only to have the Artificer come back to life in a surge of positive energy. The druid blinks, and gives a sigh of relief, looking up just in time to see the creature fall from the ceiling. "Yes, we killed it. ...I think." She relaxes...and is right back to tense at that threat, standing with her bow strung again. ... Nope, nothing.

Frowning, the short druid walks over to the corpse and, just for good measure, fires an arrow directly into its throat. Can't be too careful. "Will everyone be alright? Anyone seriously hurt?"

Jeor look at the others but sees that medical attention is being delivered, so he gathers all his weapons and straps them back in place. "We should see to the dead..." solemnly he walks to the entrance of the cave and looks for anything to use as a shovel.

Wobbling her way back up to her feet, Divada smiles to Rainbowbeam. "Thank you." She says softly to the priestess as she looks to Melon as she gets up. "That was almost as bad as Lady Primrose passing gas." She then shakes her head as she looks at the corpse of the demon-like thing. "I think I'm gonna have to find out what that thing was.......after a bit of rest of course." She then starts to say something else as rainbowbeam shoves some leaves into her mouth. "Mmf fooo" She's able to get out as she chews.......

Melon just stays where she is, though at Eleria's question, she lifts a hand. "I feel like death warmed over. Does that count?" Yeah she's not looking /so/ great at only a sliver of oomph left to her.

"You can leave the burying of bodies to me, friends," Eleria says, strapping her longbow to her body again, and heading over towards the altar to give it a good look. "Everyone here looks exhausted...and come morning, Earth Mother will give me the spells to put these all to rest. Unless someone would like to perform death rites?"

<OOC> Phanuel bows, I'm glad you had fun!

<OOC> Phanuel says, "A consecrate will counter the 'desecrate' in the area."

Azog sees that his compatriots are being seen to, and since there seems not to be any immediate threats, he shoulders his shield and pulls out a rag, cleaning his blade carefully. He looks around at the carnage here, and nods to the others about finding out what that was. As far as the dead go, he says, "We can arrange them, perhaps, but we need to find their next of kin before we bury them."

Melon blinks and rubs her head fuzzily as her condition improves. Casting about, she nods to the cleric. "Thank you kindly. Much appreciated. Umm...I'm not one for death rites or anything, and I'm new to town... Erm." She shrugs.

<OOC> Rainbowbeam goes to give last rights...

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Ahh, gotcha. Well that's up to you guys - the dead aren't going to do anything that requires a DM."

Rainbowbeam the woman nods solemnly to her patients,"It's Althea's will that her children prosper. If you would thank me, do good works or offer at the donation box." And that said, she turns and moves towards the mouth of the cave, already pulling her pendant out to chant death rites for the murdered creatures. Her face has a pale, stony quality to it.

Jeor looks at the bodies and shakes his head "If we leave them they will rot and be eaten by animals, we could maybe try and carry them back maybe..." Jeor looks at the bodies and ponders. "Regardless I dont want to see these bodies desecrated any more than they have been already."

<OOC> Eleria says, "Anything notable about the altar?"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Well, it's covered in blood and soot. You also notice a residual aura of magic about it, conjuration maybe."

<OOC> Eleria says, "Not good..."

<OOC> Jeor says, "I could"

<OOC> Divada says, "oh yeah. Divada would even encourage it."

"Scavengers are easy to keep away," Eleria adds distractedly, kneeling down before the altar and peering closely at it. She blinks. "Divada, would you please come over here and tell me what you think of this? This altar's magic aura isn't necromantic.."

<OOC> Eleria says, "Nice!"

You paged Melon with 'Well, from the way these runes are arranged... oh. Oh no. This is an altar used in some blacker circles of magic to send souls straight to the Abyss.'

Azog nods at what Jeor says, but ... It's still night, and it's a huge disgusting mess, and Azog says, "Animals eating dead bodies they find is in keeping with nature. Though they're not likely to come right away in any event." Looking at the altar, he considers and watches the others frowning at it. "Ah, right, we ought to smash it, yes?"

Jeor nods to Azog "It is a mess but I wont leave until it is dealt with... however we can deal with the altar first." the halfgiant walks into the cave and looks dwon at the alter with a furrowed brow "So... smash it huh?"

Out of sheer curiosity, Melon heads over the the altar, head canted thoughtfully. She leans in and inspects, and moves around it, and squints at the runes, and... "Oohhh. Okay, that makes sense. Not /Good/ sense... Well, I mean, good sense but not.../Good/. Hmm. Hmmmm." She straightens and looks up at Jeor. "Yep, probably a good idea. Smash it. Yep."

<OOC> Eleria says, "Any magical writing on the altar?"

ooc Yes.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Yes."

<OOC> Divada says, "what about Linguist?"

"Don't worry about any animals eating the bodies," Eleria says louder, turning to glance at Azog, "I can keep them away for tonight. I would like to claim the animal, however. They should be taken away from this place, cleansed, and left for the living creatures to feed on." As the two brutes come over, her eyes widen. "Aren't you at all curious what it was being used for? Smashing it might release some powerful magic!"

Rainbowbeam calls over her shoulder as she exits the cave,"Not even a little!"

<OOC> Rainbowbeam says, "<3"

<OOC> Eleria snrk!

<OOC> Divada says, "Phanuel? Would Linguist work in translating?"

From afar, Divada also knows Celestial....maybe the alphabet is similar.

You paged Divada with 'I doubt they're very similar, but you can give it a go.'

<OOC> Melon says, "Can I roll something to see if I know if smashing it will release stuff? Like... *checks sheet*"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Anyone with detect magic shows that there's no magic in the altar itself, just residual traces of some other magic."

GAME: Divada rolls linguistics: (14)+9: 23

You paged Divada with 'From what you can make out, the syllables put together mention something like 'unto the Abyss' or something like that.'

You paged Divada with 'Then consider that the hearts of the victims were all taken out, and there's lots of soot and burned blood all over the altar...'

Divada pages: that's all, huh?

Azog shrugs about doing anything with the animals. He hadn't been thinking about that at all, shrugging ambivalently to Eleria as far as her plans go. He raises no onjection. As far as being curious what it was used for, he says, "It was being used for evil. I don't need magic to tell me that." He searches around for some suitable tool for smashing, though, since he doesn't normally carry something like a maul, which would be very useful about now.

Jeor hrms "We cannot leave it, it is too dangerous. " the halfgiant looks to the others "Copy the symbols if need be but I wont leave this in one piece."

"Oh, well, I don't think it'll release anything. The way this was used, I don't think it stored anything. Could be wrong, though..." Melon leans in and scrutinizes a little more, then shrugs and steps out of the way. "Be my guest," the half-elf beams, gesturing.

"This was definitely for a very dark ritual. Smash it." Divada says openly. "The Symbols are definitely not celestial. I'm guessing Abyssal. Unto the Abyss......" She says softly and turns away. "Smash it....."

"Oh, of course we won't be leaving it! That would insane! Although..." Running her hand over the altar, Eleria peers thoughtfully at it. "Hmmm...what does it mean when this aura just /used/ to be there? The magic is lingering, but not active."

Melon makes her statement, and the druid eyes the altar a bit longer, worriedly...then shrugs and stands up, stepping away and giving the brutes plenty of room to swing. She looks to the artificer curiously, "What did you deduce from it?"

Jeor nods the others, casually walks up to the altar and drops his fist down upon it, smashing it into hundreds of pieces that fly out in every direction. Standing he brushes off his tabbard "We cannot suffer evil to continue, this was the best way."

<OOC> Jeor uses his racial to take 20 on a str check. :D

<OOC> Phanuel nods! So be it!

Melon blinks owlishly, and looks over to Eleria. "Hm? Oh, it was used to send souls straight into the Abyss. That's--oh!" Her arm goes up to shield herself from the chips and chunks, eyes squeezed closed.

Azog looks up as the half-giant simply smashes the altar with brute force. A few pebbles *dink* off his armor plate, but he nods in agreement with Jeor's statement. "I don't guess this creature had any loot?" he says speculatively. "Well, we'll stack up the dead neatly for their relatives, then we can take a look." Melon's comment draws a wince, but it only makes him more pleased to see the thing smashed.

<OOC> Eleria says, "Don't outsiders up and disappear after they die?"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "The quasit and dretch disappeared, yes."

Looking to Azog, Divada snickers a bit. "Sometimes, Azog, You have to do what's right. Not for gold, but because it's right." She says patting his shoulder. "Maybe there is something here, but let's leave this decrepid place." She then looks to Melon. 'Melon? Can you collapse the cave when we leave?"

<OOC> Phanuel notes there was a reward back at the Guild for whoever was responsible.

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Also, you guys never looted his body."

<OOC> Divada says, "the big guy?"

<OOC> Phanuel says, "Yep."

<OOC> Azog says, "Cool. ;) And, well, he disappeared, so..."

<OOC> Phanuel says, "No, he didn't."

<OOC> Divada says, "does he have anything we can use?"

<OOC> Divada says, "well....how about we loot it?"

<OOC> Azog says, "Oh. Definitely loot, then. Staff generally does that after the fact, yes?"

<OOC> Divada says, "we can take it all and sell it."

Eleria's eyes widen at Melon, though she flinches away from the spray of rock, putting her hands up. She spits out bits of stone. "Mother's Grace...that's horrid! But not surprising." She watches the smashed altar for a few more moments, waiting to see if any evil souls come pouring out...and lets out a sigh of relief when nothing seems to happen. She frowns over at the demon's corpse. "I would hate to have any animals try to feast on that wicked flesh--a cave-in? Ohhh, that's a good idea..." She looks up at the ceiling, rubbing her chin thoughtfully.

You paged (Lahar, Whirlpool) with 'About their loot, what should I give them? I know we had Nyzoth's spellbook and he had a +1 longsword, but other than that I didn't really think of anything.'

Azog shrugs to Divada, but says, "We have won. The honor and spoils are due to us." He'll go over, himself, to see if there's anything salvagable or valuable in the body, and in the remains of the altar. Or the desk and the bed. Those seem like places for valuables.

Melon blinks again, this time at Divada. "Cave in? Umm... I can shoot the ceiling with my ray apparatus, I guess. Otherwise, I can...run really fast or dazzle it with pretty colors. ... 's all I have prepared on me tonight." She shrugs apologetically, offering a sheepish smile.

Jeor moves beside Eleria and looks up at the ceiling as well "The blood of giants flows in my veins... perhaps I can help with this endeavor?" he offers with a weak smile.

Azog snorts about destroying the cave, itself, and says, "What's the point of ruining this place? It's a cave. We've vanquished the evil here. Tomorrow, bears will move in, perhaps. Or bandits. And if it's bandits, we can /fight them/, too. Is there honor in smashing a cave? I don't see it."

"It was mainly to keep another group from defiling this place further, Azog." Divada says softly as she walks gingerly out of the cave.

Eleria smiles brightly right back at Jeor. "While that would be very amusing to see... I don't think destruction will save us. There's nothing inherently evil about this cave, and it would serve us better to have it cleansed than destroyed." She nods at Azog. "A very good point. Let's leave the altar in pieces, but leave the cave for some animal to settle in, and give it good purpose."

Melon kicks at the floor a little, and shrugs. "Good enough for me! I'm ready to get out of this place, though; gives me the heebies." Hooking her ray gun to her hip again, she shrugs her shoulders uncomfortably and follows people out of the cave, rubbing her arms a bit. Eesh.

Azog nods at what Eleria says, and to Divada, he counters, "You could say that of the whole world. Will you destroy it so no one can defile it?" He shakes his head.
