  • Emitter: Tiasa
  • Characters: Tim (4), Terewin (4), Rakim (4), Kira (5)
  • Place: Outside Alexandria
  • Time: July 19, 2015
  • Summary: Rancher has missing sheep and needs help finding them.
  • APL:4
  • Encounter 1: 2 Owlbears (CR 4), CR 6 encounter

Word was spread out and set to various people, trying to get some that would look into the missing sheep problem. Boquintus Peeplin led those that arrived to the pasture where the sheep vanished, and begged them to find out what happened to her sheep. They have been missing for a day. The pasture is a common mountain pasture, trees on most sides except for a wagon rut road that leads back to the ranch of Boquintus Peeplin. At the moment the pasture is quite silent, almost eerily so.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "both give me knowledge nature rolls, and rakim you can also do a knowledge arcana if you have it"

Tim sighs, he hates travelling, one of these days, he will have some flying device to carry him around. Until then, its usually horses. As he moves around, stretching a bit, he starts looking for signs of tracks. And he eats an apple he pulled out of a bag.

GAME: Rakim rolls knowledge/arcana: (19)+9: 28 GAME: Tim rolls knowledge/nature: (8)+12: 20 GAME: Rakim rolls knowledge/nature: (5)+8: 13

Terewin stands in the pasture with his sword resting against his shoulder. "So... probably wolves right? Just ate the sheep?" the knight offers "Just meed to find them and that should take care of this problem."

Kira doesn't know anything about shepherding, just that sheep are vital to them. Not to mention all the others that rely on the meat and wool. "I don't know. Do you think the shepherd would call for help for wolves? Would wolves take so many of them?"

You paged (Tim, Rakim) with 'you both find the tracks of the sheep and they were running for dear life it seems.'

You paged Rakim with 'you find other tracks in the same direction of the sheep. Owlbear tracks'

After a bit of munching on his apple, Tim looks over an area with lots of broken weeds. "They ran, and they ran fast." He looks off in the direction they ran.

Rakim looks rather out of place, even his adventuring gear is rather facnier than the average, although his lace cuffs are shorter and his boots more practical. He saunters along with a deceptive langour, eyes glancing around idly "Yes..." he drawls sarcasticaly to Terewen "...wolves being well known as such tidy eaters they leave no trace" he says whilst squatting down to examine the ground more carefully, his gaze far more intent than his usual elegant laziness. His lips purse in thought as he crab walks along "Sheep tracks here, running..." he murmurs as he uses a gloved hand as a rough measuring stick ...running for their. Oh Elunas glowing tits..." he curses then casts an apologetic glance up to the heavens "...owlbear, or perhaps -bears-"

Terewin shrugs "Sure bears... close enough. Lets put a sword to them and finish this job. They are performing the Myrrish play 'Prince Dietric's Cousin' tommorow in Alexandria and I do not want to miss it." he adds with a grin. The clearing is still quiet, though they notice the brush has been disturbed in the direction that the tracks were pointed out.

"The shepherd asked us to find out what happened to the sheep," Kira frowns, "not murder any animals we find. There's no reason to put anything to the sword."

Tim finishes off the apple, tossing the core aside. "Yes, well, if it is owlbears, they are fairly dangerous to more than just sheep. It wouldn't hurt to look a bit more, see if the sheep are safe or eaten. If we run into something, well, we can decide then about killing."

You paged Rakim with 'you know that if it is owlbears, they are notoriously blood thirsty and will attack without provocation in almost every case.'

"I mean bears as in Owlbears as in plural. More than one" Rakim explains drily as he arises in one graceful motion and reaches up to pin one side of his hat brim back. That done he produces a rather fancy looking device from under his coat. A quick press of a recessed button and two arms pop out along with a crank. Another quick motion and a heavy bolt drops down as the string is drawn back by some internal mechanism. That done he turns a sidelong glance to Kira "Owlbears know little more than killing, we will need to put them down. They exist solely for killing"

Kira glances to Rakim with a tentative smile as she moves with the tracks as were pointed out. "Then we should show them a better example. Nothing exists just to kill."

The tracks are easy for those who know about such to follow, and so far no one has seen anything. As you get more into the underbrush the path actually get easier to follow, blood and wool here and there in places. There are sounds in the distance, feral sounds.

Rakim rolls his eyes towards the heavens and murmers something in a rather odd language that may be a prayer. Shaking his head he heads down the path "Forgive me for being blunt ma'am, but I flatter myself to be something of a scholar. And I speak with no hesitation or doubt that there are -many- things that exist largely to kill. Being created that way by some crazed mage. Regardless I will be sure to attend your funeral should you try to talk them into a peaceable existence" he adds before continuing. At the sounds he holds up a hand in a stopping motion, then starts to creep forwards.

Tim chuckles faintly at the talk, but keeps following the trail, then moving to the rear of the group and casting a quick spell.

GAME: Tim casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 4 DC: 18

Kira moves along, then quiets and stops when Rakim holds up his hand. "What is it?" she asks quietlywhile looking ahead.

Terewin keeps his sword out and ready as they follow the tracks. "Alright... but if they look at me funny I am going to take it as being hostile. I won't make the opening move if it suits you."

The feral sounds are still ahead, maybe something fighting over something, or maybe just wildly eating. But not close enough to see anything yet.

"From the sounds they cornered the sheep up ahead and are now eating..." Rakim murmurs back down the line. He takes in a deep breath and makes the sign of the crescent moon over his chest before trying to creep forward quietly, and managing to step on a twig with a very loud crack.

Tim will pull rear guard, its sometimes a good place to be as a mage, but sometimes its not. With a group this small though, no position would be really safe,

Kira says, "Maybe we should let them be, then," Kira frowns. "We can't resurrect sheep, the damage is done. Maybe they'll leave once they're done?" She steps alittle farther forward to try and get a peek of something to go with the sounds, wincing at the snapping twig."

"And what, pray tell, will you say when they think for their next meal that children are tastier than she...ahhh" Rakim starts to reply in a cold whisper to Kira before being rudely interrupted by an owlbear attack. Luckily his armor and grace stops the worst of the attack, and then Terewen steps up. He takes a step back away and raises his fancy crossbow, taking aim at the one not in melee currently. He squeezes the trigger but the heavy bolt flies wide, skimming the blinded creatures feathers. Calmly he works teh lever, another bolt ratchetting down and then drawn back by the intricate mechanism.

"Until the moment you let go, foolish girl" Rakim replies, his normaly lanbgorous rich voice cold and hard. He doesn't shift his focus however, aiming down the sights of his repeating crossbow at the Owlbear. TWANG. The bow sings, this bolt sinking in more deeply. The Veshanyti shows no emotion however, simple relads with the same practiced motion as before.

"I don't plan to let go..." Though Kira does spare a hand for just a second to pull and her hempen robe. The thread unweaves as a rope-sized strand, which she then uses to bind the creature's wrists to legs. Hopefully rendering it incapable of hurting anyone else. Now she can actually let go, and yet still hold it.

Tim seems to take better aim this time with his acid. He carefully throws it and it nails the bear this time, much more singed furr and feathers.

Another muttered plee in a strange language and Rakim sights down at the upright owlbear "Eluna lend me your vision" he prays softly then squeezes the trigger. The bolt flies out and sinks deep into the sparkling and blinded owlbear, the magical creature sinking slowly to the ground, dead. With that he calmly reloads and then walks purposfully towards the bound one.

THe blinded Owlbear gives a roaring death scream and then it screams no more. THe other thrashes around on the ground against its bonds but it cannot break free. FOr the moment, those are the only sounds there are.

Tim looks at the struggling owlbear, then Kira. "Your carrying it, I ain't helping. Or your letting it go free to kill something else, and thats on you. But, hey, your call." He starts rummaging in some pouches and pulls out a small bit of bread, he smiles and takes a bite.

Terewin hrms. "probably best if we put it to sleep at the very least, gonna have to find a place to let it go where it won't cause trouble." he adds as he cleans owlbear blood from his sword.

Kira is pleased that the one is caught, but frowns as she can't get to the other in time. "This one is safe, now..." She moves to the fallen one, just in case its down but still breathing and there's something she can do for it. "It didn't kill anyone in the first place," she points out.

"I am usualy against killing helpless beings, but unless you have another way" Rakim says, voice hard and cold to match his gaze as he levels that on Kira, his crossbow coming up and aiming down at the bound creature "...if we let it go and it kills again? These things cannot be reasoned with, tamed, or bargained down. Some ancient wizard made them to kill"

Tim shakes his head, "I eat meat, I would kill an animal to eat it." He gestures at the owlbear, "These things, look at us as meat. We are not anything else to them. If it sees someone and its hungry, it will feed."

The bound up and bleeding owlbear continues to writhe and thrash around on the ground, and of course there are your own wounds if any to consider.

Terewin finaly cleans off his sword and looks around "So... these things where eating the sheep right? Thats the end of it?" he asks looking around for signs of sheep.

Kira checks on the fallen one, but there's nothing she can do. She straightens up and nods to Tim. "So they're no different from Tim, or any of us." She moves firmly back towards the one tied. "That one is my prisoner, under my care. I'll hande it."

Rakim's lip curls a little and he shakes his head "If it kills anything again I promise you the weight of my temple will fall upon you" he says to Kira, his gaze hard with the full weight of the Inquistor's Office that he usually declines. That done he looks around for any remaining sheep or other tracks.

Tim chuckles, "No, its different. I could choose not to eat meat, I could choose to be a vegetarian....but then I'm just killing plants, and some say they have life too." He shrugs, "Its yours, but don't look for help with it, unless you plan to sell it to a menagarie."

The Bound one continues to thrash around trying to snap at them, though it is securely bound. You can find the remains of almost two dozen sheep through the brush from where the pair came. It looks like where they were making their nest, though it doesn't look like they had been there long. There are signs of burned trees though, and some of the sheep remains look burnt as well. You can figure this is probably all of Bo's sheep.

Kira firms her stance and squares up to Rakim. "I am a Sentinel of Althea and it is my duty to my Goddess and Temple that ALL life is sacred. If you have issue with that, you will need to speak to Her. The Gods granted life. What right do you have to take it?" She looks to Tim. "No, I will escort my prisoner to a safe place, and I will release him. He's commited no crime other than poaching. I'll compensate the shepherd."

"That is not life, that is a twisted abomination made by men's magic. But on your head be it" Rakim says although as he notices the burning he falls silent for a moment. Reaching out he rubs his gloved hand down the char and hmms softly "Curious"

Tim looks over at Rakim studying the fire, then he shrugs and looks back to Kira. "I am glad you are so sure of yourself, that this place of your choosing is safe. Its comforting to be so wise. I of course would constantly doubt myself." He then smirks, "Alright, I'm done discussing." He looks around, "Can we go now? I'm looking forward to dinner at a nice pub."

Terewin nods to Tim "Sounds good, lets get on with it."

Rakim pages: Any other trails or tracks?

You paged Rakim with 'roll survival' GAME: Rakim rolls survival: (10)+11: 21 You paged Rakim with 'you don't find any other tracks leaving but you see imprints in ground, tracks, something has taken off and landed here repeatedly.'

Rakim trails his gloved fingers up along the charred wood then down the ground. He squats down again and traces something with a frown "Something has taken flight and landed here repeatedly. Something with fire..." he says as he frowns, reloading his crossbow.

Tim shakes his head, "I doubt we are enough to take care of whatever did that. We should report it to the guild. This may not be finished."

Kira turns back to Rakim. "So there's more to this than just these two..."

There is no signs of what caused the tracks or what might have flown off, but something says that this area might still be in danger, if one looks.

"I am sure if you give it a big hug it will all be fine" Rakim drawls, his sarcastic langour back again, although the faint smile on his delicate face does not quite reach his cold and watchful gaze "Hmmm.
