  • Emitter: Sora
  • Characters: Ollithial 3, Azarval 2, Krom 4, Sparrow 3
  • Place: Outside Alexandria
  • Time: Jan 7, 2017
  • Summary: Hired by the Guild of Adventurers, to look into a stranger who threatened a village and then livestock started dying.
  • APL: 3
  • Encounter 1: 4 Zombie Wolves CR 5

A village has been having some problems from the woods. First, some guy in robes had come demanding tribute, they of course laughed and sent him away, now something has been attacking their herds and they need someone to help deal with it. This is where you all come in. Word was passed through various means that there was work available and so here you are. You are on your way to the village, and can see it over the next rise, will probably be there shortly. It really isn't that far from Alexandria, so it didn't take long to get here.

Walking along with the others, Ollithial keeps his bow at the ready as they ride and spotting the village is quick to call out that he has spotted it, "Village ahead. I reckon we can be there within twenty," and continues to spur his way toward the village. "Keep an eye out for the fellow with the robes the job mentioned," he says to the others, not really expecting to see them.

Krom strolls casually on this balmly winter day. Well, balmly by the standards of someone who grew up north by the artic circle. "Krom keep an eye on everyone. Easy to change robes."

Sparrow walks along, alternately whistling or humming softly as she goes. She's added a thick, fur-lined and hooded cloak to her normal daily wear, out of respect for the weather -- she's clearly -not- from the arctic, from how she's bundling up against the cold! She doesn't add to the conversation at hand, but she does nod her head.

Azarval is walking up at the front of the group, shield ready and prepared to deal with any danger en route to the village. "Do we know what the man in robes was threatening the village with in order to gain their obidience? Or was it vague enough to where attacks on their livestock would be assumed to be retribution from him?"

"Sounded like he's the one, to me", Sparrow speaks up to say. "The attacks wasn't happening before the guy came and demanded 'em to pay him, after all", she adds.

As you approach the village, an older looking gentleman comes to the edge of the village and moves towards you, "Thank you for coming," he calls out. Krom mmms quietly. "Krom does not yet know. Seems is good to find out more." He raises a hand in greeting, waiting until close to the villager before speaking again. "You are welcome. Can you tell us what exactly is happening? Our briefing was sparse."

"The reliability of the adventurer's guild should never be in question," Ollithial says to the older gentleman and with his bow at the ready, stares every which way.

Sparrow remains quiet as the others speak with the older gentleman, though she eyes him up and down.

As the older gentlman approaches, Azarval gives the man a gesture of greeting. "Fear not. We will discover who is behind these attacks and bring them to justice. You have my word as a Sunblade of Daeus."

<OOC> Sparrow wants to roll Sense Motive... trying to make sure this old guy's actually a villager like he's portraying himself to be. hehehe. :)

The man nods his head, "We do not know who the man was, just that he demanded tribute or else. We have not seen him again, something just keeps attacking and killing our livestock." he says softly.

<OOC> Sora says, "you can" GAME: Sparrow rolls sense motive: (13)+1: 14 <OOC> Azarval says, "I'll use Sense Evil on the man and roll Sense MOtive on him" GAME: Azarval rolls Sense MOtive: (7)+7: 14 <OOC> Sora says, "he seems truthful, not hiding anything not evil"

"What time of day and which fields has the unknown thing been raiding, and has anyone spotted it?" Ollithial inquires of the old man. Sticking to the purpose of their contract, and taking it at face value. Face value meant being paid.

Krom considers. "What sort of livestock? Sheep, cattle, goats? All types, or just one? When do the attacks take place? May Krom examine the corpse that might better know what are dealing with?"

Azarval adds in his own questions. "Were there any tracks found? What about animal remains?"

Sparrow starts to open her mouth to ask stuff, but then listens as the others ask... and doesn't add in. Apparently, the others are asking the questions she had in mind.

The villager gestures to one of the livestock pens you can see from where you are. There are no animals there, as if the attack has caused the other livestock not want to be there. "It has always been at night and we don't see anything."

<OOC> Krom says, "Would a perception or survival roll be better to search tracks?" <OOC> Sora says, "perception helps you find them, survival to track them" GAME: Krom rolls perception: (20)+5: 25 GAME: Krom rolls survival: (13)+6: 19

"Was it just that pen, every time, or you've only had the one attack?", Sparrow chimes in to ask, finally, because the old man didn't really answer all the questions asked.

<OOC> Sora says, "pose checking around the pen and I will pass on what you find." <OOC> Azarval says, "YOu guys check, I'll keep watch. I have nil wilderness/tracking ability"

Krom is no ranger, but he heads to the pen anyway, checking the marks and the ground and trying to decipher their meanings.

The man walks over to the pen, "It has been others, this is just the most recent, the other animals won't go near it. There is a body within if you wish to look, we were keeping it till someone arrived, just in case." he says and then looks at Sparrow, "It has only happened a few times."

You paged Krom with 'you do find tracks and think you can follow them, knowledge nature would tell you what they are'

"I think we're gonna wanna see the other one, too", Sparrow says to the old man, following him over. "This way, if there's tracks going one way, maybe we can follow 'em and find them that's doing this to y'all."

GAME: Krom rolls knowledge/nature: (13)+2: 15 You paged Krom with 'you think they are canines of some kind.'

Krom mmms, and motions to the others. "Here, heading that direction. Look like dog tracks to Krom, maybe wolf. Could turn once out of sight. If lose these tracks, can try follow other sets. But these are most fresh."

A glance is spared for the tracks and Ollithial looks in the direction indicated. "A wolf? Maybe it has been trained by the folk in the robe," he suggests and with his bow at the ready, starts in the indicated direction. "We'll investigate and let you know when the job is done," he says to the village elder.

"A dude in robes... maybe he turned himself into the wolf?", suggests Sparrow, although her tone of voice makes it clear it's totally just a guess on her part. "Anyways, if we're gonna follow 'em", she says, with a gesture to the tracks, "let's get going."

The villager nods, "I will leave you to it then, good luck." he says and heads back into the village to let you all get to work with your tracking.

Krom checks with the others before heading after the tracks, double checking his blades are clear for a swift draw.

When the tracks are located by the others, Azarval joins them as the trail is followed. He has his sword out and keeps his eyes searching for any potential ambushes as they go after the perpetrator of the attacks.

Walking with the others toward the spot indicated, Ollithial thumbs at his bow a bit. "If necessary, we'll just wait for the evening, but I expect keeping our eyes open all day will be wise," he suggests to the others as they move.

When the party starts out, Sparrow follows along... but when the tracks lead into the woods, she says, "Take it slow an' easy. I'll shadow in the brush off to the side...?", with her tone of voice making it a question and suggestion.

The tracks lead off and they don't seem to be like a regular animal trail, in that its a straight line, it is heading towards what looks to be a rock outcropping.

<OOC> Sparrow will go ahead, unless everyone else says nay, and fan out and off to the side, about 30' away, and go stealthy. GAME: Sparrow rolls stealth: (14)+7: 21 <OOC> Sora says, "you are good so far Sparrow, pretty stealthy. go ahead and pose it, and encourages more poses"

Following along, Ollithial stares at the ground ahead and only once does he look up towards where he thinks Sparrow might be. Leaving them to travel in silence and not draw attention to their location.

Stepping off the trail the others follow, Sparrow starts following a course parallel to the party's course, while doing her best to be unseen and unheard -- just in case being able a fight starts and there's advantage to be had in coming to surprise the enemy from a flank.

Krom mmms softly, and heads for the outcropping, assuming it to be their destination. Though the northman keeps an eye on the tracks to be sure. As Sparrow peels off, he hesitates, but keeps quiet, assuming she knows what she's doing.

Azarval keeps pace with Krom as they approach the outcropping. Sparrow's path into the brush is noted, but the paladin doesn't draw attention to it. Once the outcropping is reached, Azarval starts searching around the area, looking for a continuation of the trail or some hidden sanctuary that their quarry might be in. As you get closer you can see that the trail leads right up to the outcropping, where there seems to be a cave.

<OOC> Sora says, "perception" GAME: Ollithial rolls perception: (6)+6: 12 GAME: Sparrow rolls perception: (19)+4: 23 <OOC> Sora says, "Krom, Azarval?" GAME: Krom rolls perception: (14)+5: 19 GAME: Azarval rolls perception: (4)+4: 8 You paged (Krom, Sparrow) with 'you both notice that the ground around the cave opening looks different, like it was a barrier or something.' From afar, to (Krom, Sora): Sparrow nods.

Krom hesitates as the cave comes into sight, eyeing it suspiciously. "Ground has been disturbed. Trap, maybe."

As he points it out, you all can see that around the cave mouth the ground seems different, almost as if to enter there one would cross a barrier of some kind.

Sparrow steps out into the open and gestures everyone back as she stoops to pick up a pebble... she seems to be intending to toss the pebble at the area blocked by the apparent barrier.

As the cave entrance is pointed out, and the possibility of a trap, Azarval stands back, giving room for someone to perform some rogue-ish trade to allow the party to enter the cave unharmed.

Holding his bow aloft, Ollithial looks at the 'noted' entrance, and points his bow at it, ready for anything that might emerge. "I can shoot it with my bow," he whispers aside to the others, "In case the rock is insufficient to set it off."

The pebble if tossed will encounter no barrier and other than the ground looking different, there doesn't seem to be anything else, no trap, well maybe there is something inside the cave.

Krom watches, and shrugs. "Maybe just where dog piddle. Rr maybe bigger rock do something. Krom not know."

Sparrow does toss the pebble, then shrugs. Quietly pulling an axe from her belt into one hand, she touches herself on the chest with the other hand, then points to her eyes, then towards the cave mouth, raising her eyebrows to a questioning look.

<OOC> Sparrow says, "anyone else have Handspeech as a language? :)"

When it doesn't respond to the stone, Ollithial hefts his bow and suggests, "Let us proceed then. Azarval, care to take the lead?" he inquires.

Krom glances to Sparrow and shakes his head. "Too dangerous." At least, that's the message he got.

Sparrow nods her head, though she does pull another axe off her belt into her empty hand as she moves up along the side of the outcropping, quietly, to try and get a sneaky peek in... without actually crossing the 'barrier' line.

GAME: Sparrow rolls stealth: (9)+7: 16

The ground that is different forms a semi-circle around the cave opening, as Sparrow gets closer she can hear some kind of wierd sounds coming from inside.

Azarval nods to Ollithial, holding forth his longsowrd. "Everyone, be cautious and on gaurd," he says softly to the others in his group. A deep breath, and then, Azarval slowly makes his way into the cave, trying to move as silently as possible.

GAME: Azarval rolls Stealth: (16)+-3: 13 <OOC> Azarval says, "Hang on, checking something..." GAME: Ollithial rolls stealth: (4)+5: 9 <OOC> Azarval says, "Yup, the Armor penalties were added in correctly" <OOC> Sparrow says, "could one step past the semi-circle and into the cave?" <OOC> Azarval says, "That's what I'm trying to do right now"

Sparrow holds up an axe-filled hand as if to stop Azarval, eyes on the ground. "Hold up... it's... wierd", she says, in a whisper. "Let me check this way...", she adds, as she rehangs an axe at her belt to free a hand to pull out what looks like a jeweler's eyepiece, holding it to one of her eyes.

Following the others, Ollithial lets the others take the lead and simply keeps his bow at the ready, prepared to shoot anything that moves that isn't one of them. Drawing an arrow up, he nocks it and advises, "We can try to smoke them out, if necessary."

<OOC> Sparrow will use her Artificer's Goggles to cast 'Detect Magic' to scan the entrance to the cave. <OOC> Sparrow had kinda forgot she had that. :) <OOC> Sora says, "It flares up the barrier is some kind of magical barrier"

"Magic", Sparrow says. "Some kinda magic barrier", she adds, putting the eyepiece back away before refilling that hand with an axe.

"... and some wierd kinda sounds from inside", Sparrow adds, still whispering.

As Azarval steps across the barrier, the sounds get louder and what is causing them emerges from the cave opening. They look like wolves, so Krom was right in that regard, but they are missing fur in places, not just fur, but flesh too. If you had to guess..some kind of rotting wolf. More emerge from the cave, about four in total and they are making strange sounds like a cross between a moan and a growl.

Sparrow, seeing that some of the wolves (zombie wolves?) are still trapped in the cave behind the others, moves right up to the mouth of the cave, cutting down with one of her axes onto the head of one of them... the wolve is staggered, but not felled by the slash, which leaves a deep gouge!

<OOC> Sparrow says, "my AC is 19. if that 19 was on me, hit." <OOC> Azarval says, "My AC is 18 after the charge"

The four zombie wolves or whatever they are come out, one got attacked alot and it turns and tries to bite Sparrow and fails to. The other that had been in the opening stumbles around and out of the opening like its moving for Azarval's far side, as one of the two that were in the back moves forward a little fast and tries to bite at Azarval. It misses as well. The one in the back shuffles a bit, like waiting for something to move so it can get an attempt.

GAME: Azarval rolls melee+4: (3)+4+4: 11 <OOC> Sora says, "was that with the +2 for flanking?" <OOC> Azarval says, "Yes"

Sparrow hops back as the wolf she just hit in the head snaps at her, then steps in to the side of it, lashing down with her axe and chopping through the spine at the base of its neck. Undead canine or not, that seems to do the trick, putting the beast down... while it's jaws keep snapping open and closed, it can't move the rest of its body.

<OOC> Sora says, "miss" GAME: Sora advances the initiative order.

On the second roll, she stuffs the backside of the head of one of her axes into the wolf's mouth, then kicks herself to her feet while the wolf pulls its head away from the axe-head that's keeping it from biting. Bending her legs low, she then leaps up and over the wolf, its jaws snapping at, and just missing, one of her arms as she flips and somersaults completely over it to land behind it, threatening it from behind!

As Sparrow rolls out from the wolf that had tripped her up, Azarval stabs hard at the beast, sending his sword through the skull and ending the creature's life or un-life; at this point, Azarval doesn't particularly care which it is. The last remaining wolf thing goes after Krom again but misses, the remains of the other three are really starting to stink.

Krom flinches as the last wolf snaps at him, but rallies and steps back in, his curved blades hooking across the monsters neck and leg, a swift yank severing both. The north man wrinkles his nose as the beast falls. "Krom hope the master not smell worse than the servants."

With the wolves all fallen, Azarval takes a deep breath and strains to hear if there are any more noises coming from the cave. Any other threats that might lay within...

Sparrow glances into the cave behind herself, then steps out of the cave to check at the bite on one of her legs. The leather of her trousers is torn open, and she has nasty-looking gouges on the skin of her calf and shin... but they're not deep and the bleeding isn't very bad; the wolf grabbed her and pulled her down, instead of grabbing and mauling her leg. "I'm good... let's check the cave", she suggests.

Krom nods in agreement. Pulling a small crystal vial from his pack, the northman shakes it vigerously before uncapping the top. Small glowing motes of light swirl out, floating around Krom a few moments before fading away, only to be replaced as more float free from the bottle. Each mote is nothing, but the collective cloud forms a glow, bright enough to see by.

About this point there is a scream of anger and frustration. Looking for the source you can see a robed figure standing above the cave entrance. "Do you know the effort I went through to animate those. I will make you pay for that. I will be back and I will have more...Pets." comes the scream. He casts a spell and with the sound of air displacement, he is gone. If you check inside the cave you can find supplies that probably were used to create the zombie wolves, ritual materials and that sort of thing, though all used, there are the remains of some livestock too.

Sparrow starts at the sudden scream from above her, and jumps, tucks, and rolls away from the cave, axes at the ready (with one pulled back as if to throw it) as she comes back to her feet. By then, of course, the robed figure's finished his sililoquy and poofed away. Lowering the axe she has readied for a throw, Sparrow glances around and relaxes out of her combat-ready stance. "Well... looks like we might hafta be coming back later, hey?", she comments.

Krom jumps, only slightly startled by the arrival of the robed figure, but enough they disappear before the northman can get to them.

The disappearance of the necromancer that unleashed the monsters on the village causes Azarval to frown. He turns to Sparrow as he cleans and sheathes his sword. "He may have slipped from justice for now, but yes. There will be others, including myself, ready to confront him and bring the judgement of Daeus upon his vile acts. Justice can never be completely eluded, only evaded for a short time."

There is not much more here, other than cleaning up, disposing of rotting corpses so that the smell doesn't ruin the forest. Then to report back to the village. Once there the villager thanks you and tells you that the guild will have your pay. Though they do give you a warm hearty meal before you head back to Alexandria. They also say that they will send word if they see any sign of that robed figure again.
