  • Summary: Villagers plagued by raining boulders. What is the cause?

Once again there is a village near to Alexandria that is running into problems. This one is more up into the mountains but it still needs help. They are not sure what is happening other than their houses are being smashed by large rocks. They have called on adventurers to come and help the situation. This is where you all come in, having answered the call and arrived at the village, mid afternoon, to be greeted by one of the village elders. "Thank you all for coming."

Lothos smiles, "Good afternoon, so, falling rocks. Has anyone died yet? I hope not, sounds a horrible way to go. What can you tell us beyond the falling rocks thing?"

Smashed by large rocks? This sounds intriguing. Solace has answered the call, along with the other adventurers, and is tinkering with an oversized pair of goggles as he listens to the village elder. He nods to the elder's greeting. "Not a problem, I'm sure." He bobs his head along with Lothos' question, and lifts the goggles to peer around for sign of falling rock damage.

Zalara hmms as she looks around the village and she looks over the others, "Falling rocks huh? Sounds like someone might be throwing them." She suggests as she has her death ray out and she looks up towards the mountaintop, "Do you know the directions these boulders are coming from?"

The elder shakes his head, "No one has died, but there have been a few severely injured. And as to what. Not sure, all we know is that about the same time every evening, around dusk now, it is as if it starts to hail boulders." He does gesture to a rock wall to the north that seems to be made of good sized boulders, "We have been turning the boulders into a wall just in case. But they do come from the north."

Lothos nods, "You know, for some reason my mind leaps to a dog digging and kicking up dirt behind it. I'm guessing the throwing is not intentional, but we do need to investigate and try to put a stop to it."

Solace hmms. "Have you had any quarrels with anyone recently? Reclusive wizards, angry druids, that sort of thing?" His tone is thoughtful, and he peers at the rock wall curiously. "Or did anything strange happen just before the incidents started?"

Zalara hmms as she looks at some of the boulders, "Well let's hope so. I'd hope it's not intentional. Shall we had to the north then and try to track down whatever is doing this."

With a moment of thought, the elder replies, "There was some kind of wizard months ago that wanted us to swear fealty to him and tithe part of our harvest to him, but that was long before this started happening."

Lothos arches a brow, "Wizard demanding fealty and tithes...." he rolls his eyes, "Wow, thats original of him." He shakes his head, "Ok, well, we can head in the direction the rocks are coming from, see if we see signs of the source."

"Wizards do have long memories for slights, but that seems a bit...obscure for a wizard demanding subjugation," Solace muses. When Lothos suggests they head out, he nods in agreement. "Speculation will serve us little. Might as well see what lies beyond with our own eyes." Or goggles, as the case may be, because he puts those on.

Zalara hmms, "Doesn't sound like a very nice wizard to me to go demanding tithes and throwing boulders." She looks to the others, "I'm ready to go if you two are." The elder nods, "Thank you and may you be successful." he starts to turn to head back towards one of the buildings, though looks like he is going into a cellar rather than just the building itself.

Lothos looks to the others, "Well, lets just start heading off. Eventually we should see the source of the stone. Gotta be dug up somewhere, unless its magical rocks or something."

Solace nods. "Works for me." He watches the elder go into that cellar, then chuckles. Softly, to the rest of the party, he says, "That doesn't bespeak a great deal of confidence in us, does it?" With a shake of his head, he starts heading towards the north.

Zalara hmms, "Well the boulders might still rain while we make our way to the wizard. They're being cautious which I would be if boulders rained down on me." She says as she heads along. "I wish that I had brought my hoverbike."

Lothos nods, "Yes, no telling how far these things are being thrown. So lets start moving." He turns and starts off in the direction they were told the boulders are coming from, though he will pause to look at the rocks here, the ones made into a wall.

The Boulders look like what might expect to pull from a river or something, worn down by the elements almost rounded.

Solace pauses by the stone wall, examining the hunks of stone. "Hmm. These don't look freshly quarried. Perhaps a giant is excavating a swimming pool?"

Zalara looks at the boulders, 'Let's hope it's something innocent like that, although I doubt it."

As you progress, the terrain gets a bit rockier, the boulders might have come from around here.

Solace hums to himself as they walk. "Zalara, we should invent some sort of...hover vehicle for large numbers of people. Imagine it! Adventurers wherever they are needed, without having to walk on this irritating ground." He grins. "And before you say 'airship', I was thinking of something a bit smaller and less resource intensive."

Lothos snorts, "Magic carpet, larger sizes. Great for groups, and it rolls up to fit inside a decient sized bag of holding. Tada....done."

Zalara nods, "Lothos is right a magic carpet a large sized one although expensive is more practical then a hoverwagon. I doubt it could go very fast." She says as she continues to talk, 'Besides walking is good for you. I don't ride my hoverbike around all the time. Just most."

Solace bahs. "/Magic/. No substitute for the magicite sciences when properly applied, Lothos. Although a magic carpet would be nice, right about now." He kicks a stone with the boot of his titan armor. "Ah, well. If wishes were fishes, we'd walk on the sea, or so my father's wife used to say." He looks about him for the source of the rocks as they walk.

Lothos chuckles, "Magicite sciences? You realize its just another form of magic right? Magic thats controlled through mechanics, instead of through the will of a person." He gestures a hand, whispering a word and creating a faint light on his fingers. "Will."

There is a heavy sound from up the hills, its coming closer. You paged (Solace, Zalara) with 'sounds like something large trudging along' You paged Solace with 'more than one something.'

"The vehicle of control makes all the difference," Solace insists. "Magic is rooted in the person, yes. Which means it is forever limited to the originator. However, I could hand you one of these..." he plucks a small silver egg-shaped thing off of his belt, "and because of artifice, you could use the spell within as if it were one of your own. And I could hand it to a peasant, and they could do the same. This is the difference. Magic is a mystery. Artifice is a /technology/--" he breaks off at that sound, head swiveling towards it. "...let's take cover," he suggests, waving towards the nearest cover, whatever that might be. Something he hears adds an extra urgency to his hushed, "/Quickly/."

GAME: Lothos refreshes spells.

Zalara smiles, "I always heard fly to the moon." She giggles as she looks around and she has her death ray out. She chuckles a little bit as she listens to the two debate and she shakes her head as she hears the sound of something large coming. "Agreed." She says as she looks around and dashes off to the side.

Lothos nods, turning to look for somewhere to take cover and hide, for him, that could include flying since he can do that at will at times.

Three large humanoids barrell into view. They seem to be heading towards Zalara's location at the moment though still about 60' out.

Lothos grimaces, speaking whispers towards the others. "Stone giants, I think they are under a compulsion." He starts chanting arcane words, quick gestures as he starts to form a strong spell.

<OOC> Zalara says, "I'll cast shield on myself." GAME: Zalara casts Shield. Caster Level: 10 DC: 17 <OOC> Lothos says, "Ohh drat, I shoulda cast mage armor hours ago :P" GAME: Tiasa advances the initiative order.

Zalara looks towards the others, "Are you sure? Do either if you have any spells or contraptions to dispel this compulsion?" She asks as she activates one of her bracelets to put a shield around her.

<OOC> Solace says, "How many of them could I get in a lightning bolt line?" <OOC> Tiasa says, "just one...since you can't move and cast." <OOC> Solace hmm. Activates Titan armor for +4 Dex, and readies death ray, then! And see if I can maneuver to get a better shot. <OOC> Tiasa says, "alright, pose" GAME: Tiasa advances the initiative order.

"Dispels are not, currently, my expertise," Solace admits. He taps the arcane engine just below his throat and his armor emits a soft hum as it powers up. He stalks around, trying to find a place where he can get a better shot, and as he moves, his gauntlet breaks apart into the hidden death ray.

The Giant that seems to be a little in the lead reaches into a sack and then hurls first one boulder and then a second at Zalara. The first bounces off of her shield that she just brought into existance, the second goes wide.

Lothos speaks quickly in draconic. "Defend yourself now." This to his the elven archer looking thing he summoned. Then he looks over at the closest giant, pulling a card from his pack and tossing it to the ground. "To thee I curse that wich is given shall be taken."

The two giants that were blasted with the lightning bolt react. The one that was hurt worse throws two rocks at Solace, one hits and hits really hard. The other throws rocks at Zalara and just misses seriously hurting her.

GAME: You damaged Zalara for -1 points. 68 remaining.

Zalara takes aim as the boulders bounce off her shield and she takes aim. She fires and hits one of the twice with her death ray. She freezes over the one she was aiming at, "Ha take that." She says as she gets ready for another shot and the death ray starts to recharge.

Solace darts out from behind cover, eyes on the giant...giants. In his hand was the silver egg-shaped object from before. Now, he tosses it into the air, where it unfurls like a spiky flower, its stamen tipped with glowing magicite. The glow strengthens and thunder peals through the air as a crackling, blistering bolt of blue-white lightning streaks across the field, slamming into two of the giants. Solace doesn't get long to gloat, though, because he takes a boulder to the face, getting knocked ass over teakettle down to the ground, amidst the sound of cracking armor. And probably bones.

The frosted Giant tries to toss a rock at Zalara, but isn't doing too well.

<OOC> Lothos says, "Ok, hrm" <OOC> Lothos says, "any of them in melee?" <OOC> Tiasa says, "nope, they are all throwing rocks from afar" <OOC> Lothos says, "Ok. Command my helper to cast Blur on Solace" <OOC> Tiasa says, "okay" <OOC> Tiasa says, "anything else?" <OOC> Lothos says, "And I'll fly behind solace to give him healing hex." <OOC> Tiasa says, "okay." <OOC> Solace says, "Grazi!"

Lothos grimaces, speaking in draconic. "Protect us, him first." He gestures to Solace. Then he flies down quickly, his hair extending to touch Solace from behind and send healing energies into him.

Zalara gets up after the boulder hits her and she grits her teeth behind her armor. She aims her death ray again as the one she hurt before. She fires off two shots in quick succession and then giant drops frozen. "Got one!" She calls out as she pulls the lever and the death ray starts to recharge.

Solace is healed! And blurs in an odd fashion. "Thank you kindly," he calls out to Lothos. Then his ray finishes charging, and he tosses out two bursts of lightning at the wounded giant as the other crashes down. The lightning sticks and crawls all over its body, aggravating wounds already there.

With the giant wearing a blue belt having fallen to the ground, frozen, the crispy and tangled one with a red belt throws two rocks at Solace trying to ignore not being able to move and misses with both. The one with purple belt and the least hurt is still lobbing rocks at Zalara without much luck, though one came close as it bounced off her shield spell.

Lothos turns, as he does his summoned creature casts blur on him, his form growing hazy. He draws another card, throwing it at a giant. "And now, you are cursed....to um....well, bad things." He giggles a bit.

Zalara takes aim again after dodging the boulders. She takes careful aim and fires a pair of blue energy beams at the giant that just threw a boulder at her. She hits it one time in the leg and she freezes it before she hits it in the head with the second blue cold beam. She presses a few buttons before she pulls the lever to recharge the death ray.

     It is now Lothos' turn! Zalara is next!

Zalara's two blasts are followed by two from the blurred Solace. The smell of ozone fills the air, and Solace grins in satisfaction as the giant topples. "And that is for hitting me wth a boulder."

<OOC> Lothos says, "One left?"

With the fall of the red belted Giant, there is only one remaining. For a moment it looks like he might flee but there there is a red flare around its head and it pulls out another rock lobbing it at Zalara and bouncing off her shield spell again.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "yes, just one and pretty hurt." <OOC> Lothos says, "Was it the one I misfortuned or not?" <OOC> Tiasa says, "nope. that one is down the one solace just took out" <OOC> Lothos says, "Ok, Summon blur on Zalara, and I'll misfortune the last one" <OOC> Tiasa says, "ok" GAME: Tiasa rolls 1d20+7: (4)+7: 11 GAME: Tiasa advances the initiative order.

     It is now Zalara's turn! Solace is next!

Lothos steps back a bit, still giggling and tossing another card. "One down, and your fate is to fall as well...and whomever is controling you." The summon moves over to touch Zalara and blur her as well.

<OOC> Zalara says, "How bad off does the purple one look?" <OOC> Tiasa says, "pretty bad" <OOC> Zalara says, "I'll just shoot him once then." Zalara doesn't move as the boulder hit her again and bounce off her shield. She keeps aim right in the purple belted giant's head and she fires. She freezes it's head again and the giant falls over. She gets up and looks around for any other giants. She hmms softly, "Shall we go visit the wizard now?" She asks as she deactivates her titan armor and the armor goes back into her backpack.

Lothos giggles a bit as the last one falls, "Ahh, well, that was fun. Definatly time to find out who is in charge around here. And spank them." His summon fades out of existance.

Solace gives Zalara an impressed look. "Nicely done. And yes, we should pursue this further. If whoever is behind this can enslave giants, they clearly cannot be left to their own devices. Although I do wonder why one would go through all the trouble to enslave such creatures only to have them drop rocks on a village." He moves over to investigate the fallen bodies for clues.

It is getting towards Dusk and as the light starts to fade there is a loud screeching roar overhead and a shadowy shape, massive by the size of the shadow flies over heading to the north, the direction the giants came.

You paged (Zalara, Solace) with 'It looks like a griffin but its way too big, and looks like it has two sets of wings..' You paged Solace with 'there was someone sitting on it, using it as a mount.' Zalara pages: Can I do a knowledge/arcana?

Solace looks up at the cry, his eyes widening in the encroaching darkness. "...that would probably be our mastermind. The rider, not the beast, clearly." He frowns. "Does anyone know what that thing is? Seems to have two sets of wings."

Lothos grimaces, squinting at the sight. "We need to find his home, and take care of him. Throwing rocks at a house is just rude and childish."


You paged (Zalara, Lothos) with 'maybe something that has been altered by magic or something.'

Solace snorts. "Five silvers says that he calls himself something long and pretentious. Malgrim the Master of Abominations, or something." A pause. "Wait...no, that was one of my teachers. Point stands."

Zalara hmms, "I suspect that it's something other then just rocks. Maybe something is being built or like you said before being dug." She looks up and she frowns, "There is something up there. Looks like a big griffin with two sets of wings." She pauses to think for a moment. "It looks like some kind of magically altered beast." She looks over at Solace and nods. "Probably."

Lothos shrugs, "Reasons are not really vital, we need to smack him around, either get him to shape up, or get rid of him." He waves a hand, gesturing. "Onward, towards the wizard."

"Reasons can be important," Solace says, although he falls into line to follow the beast's path. "If Zalara's right, and this is an inadvertinate attack on the village, then perhaps we can reason with this person. They are clearly powerful."

A grunt from the warlock, "He did threaten the village remember?"

<OOC> Tiasa says, "okay to move forward a bit?" <OOC> Lothos says, "yes" <OOC> Solace says, "Sure!"

As you travel on you can see signs of the Giant's passing as well as pretty sure this is the direction the beast flew overhead. Eventually you reach a level part of the path. It is strange though you are heading up the mountain and then suddenly there is a completely level circle. Its completely flat and over 100ft from one side to the other. Where the level part of the circle moves into the side of the mountain, it looks sheered off, as if something circular sliced rock and stone. The far side of the circle is a sheer climb of about 20-30 ft before it looks like the trail continues up the mountain. Whereever the giants came from this looks like it might have had something to do with it, but whatever it was...its gone.

<OOC> Zalara says, "Can I use knowledge/arcana again to figure out if this was some sort of spell? Or what it might have been used for?"

Lothos scratches his head a bit, "Huh, wonder what was going on here." He looks around, then casts a detect magic spell to see if he notices anything.

GAME: Lothos casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 10 DC: 17

Solace hmms. "This is certainly odd. Excavating for a sorcerous stronghold, perhaps?" He tries to see if it looks as though anything was being built, or quarried for a building in the area.

Zalara hmms as she looks at the sides, "It looks like magic was used to make the sides. Like it was to make room for something." She pulls down her goggles to look at the area with the detect magic in the lenses.

You paged Zalara with 'there is a remanent of magic, something was here, gone now. conjuration magic'

"A tower. Some sort of tower was here," Solace says, gesturing at marks on the ground. "See, there? The foundation stones rested here. But the entire tower is...gone, now." He looks to Lothos. "Do you see any lingering enchantments?"

Lothos nods, "Magic, floating tower perhaps? Or something equally odd. It teleported, or, well, could be anything honestly. Lets continue up the trail. Can you fly up there?" he points to the trail above. "I can fly you both up if necessary."

Zalara nods, "Perhaps a tower, or a large summoning circle." She offers as she looks over the area. "Definitely conjuration. He summoned something big." Zalara says, "Maybe"

"Or transported it, perhaps?" Solace offers. He nods to Lothos. "Flying isn't a problem." A tap on his armor, and black, leathern wings with bronze pinions stretch out with a snap. "Anyone need a lift?"

<OOC> Tiasa says, "perception checks once you get to the trail once more"

Lothos snorts and simply lifts off the ground, "I'm good." He then zips up to the trail, though if Zalara needs a lift, he will pull her with his hair.

Once you resume the trail you quickly realize that this part of the trail has not been used in some time.

Lothos grimaces, "Ok, well, he flies, so lets try the trail a bit more, just in case. Maybe he moved the tower to the top of the mountain."

Zalara shakes her head as she watches Solace's wings come out, "Very nice. I'm glad you finally caught up." She says as she pauses a moment and from her backpack a pair of platinum colored wings come out of her back pack. She starts to lift up and flies after the others.

"It would be properly majestic." Solace takes to the ground again as soon as he's reached the train, not having forgotten that giant beast." He hrmphs at Zalara. "Do we want to have a plan? Not that we aren't fantastic, but someone who can teleport a tower may be a touch out of our weight class without the use of tactics." Flying it doesn't take long to search more, but there doesn't seem to be any other signs.

Zalara hmms, "Well I can go invisible and I can turn someone invisible." She offers as she continues to look around.

<OOC> Lothos says, "I forgot to cast my summon monster earlier, let me type that out" GAME: Lothos casts Summon Monster V. Caster Level: 10 DC: 22

Lothos shrugs, "Tactically, I'm not sure how you can even suprise someone that strong. If he did move a tower like that, he is out of our league and we go talk to the guild. Maybe he just took over some other mages tower though."

"Well, there is that," Solace nods his agreement with Lothos. "I'm all for retreating if this person seems to be too much for us." He continues to trudge along the trail, keeping one eye towards the sky.

There doesn't seem to be anything else around, the Tower, and or wizard being gone for now.

Zalara hmms a little bit, "I wonder where the gaints came from and what exactly they were up to." She asks as she continues to look around. "Maybe if we can follow those creatures?" She looks around for the creatures again.

Lothos grimaces, "We need to know where the flying thing went. Even if we went up high, no chance we can locate where they went. This is highly annoying."

Solace looks around. "It looks as if our mysterious mastermind up and left once we took out his goons. Perhaps we can find a fallen fragment of the tower, and someone can scry for where the rest of it might have gone back in Alexandria?"

Whirlpool has reconnected. <OOC> Tiasa says, "about time to wrap up, can do a few more poses. if you want to find something Solace I can work that in, just drop a pose of searching back around where you found the circle." <OOC> Tiasa says, "will be glad when I am off these meds"

Lothos shakes his head, "Well, nothing really we can do. Explore a bit more and report to the guild. With the giants gone, hopefully that will fix the villages problem at least. Course, if the wizard was serious, those giants could of annihilated that village. So I think this was indirect results."

Solace follows his own suggestion, returning to the impressions of the disappeared tower and looking for something. He makes a satisfied sound as he picks up a shard of stone. "Here. We can take this back. I dislike the idea of leaving such a powerful practicioner out there, without knowing their intentions or goals."

Zalara hmms, "Maybe it's going to fight the Dran with that flying tower if there is one." She says as she wings around and looks around more. "Let's try to head back to the circle to see what we can find."

After a little more searching and Solace getting the shard of stone, you make it back to the village where the Elder thanks you and gives you your reward as well as promising to pass word if anything else strange happens in the area. Then back to Alexandria.
