  • Title: A Curious Request, part 9, the End
  • Emitter: Whirlpool
  • Characters: Ashes, Lysos, Silmeria, Edinaz, Baz da Ork
  • Place: Dragonier

  • Summary: It hated us so much. It.. the... flames. Flames, flames, on the side of my face... Breathing. Breath. Hard to breathe. Dying in lava is like that. The void dragon fought, ripping chunks out of Silmeria as she fired shot after shot into it, the Chains of Perdition and Lysos' Hydraulic Push forcing it back, but not over the edge. Until Edinaz's final successful Bullf Rush that consigned the drake to a molten death. A death in which his body warmed and exploded underneath the lava in a furious eruption that chased the adventurers from the mine. An eruption that sank a crater in the earth, and nearly took Ashes and Lysos with it. They are saved from a molten grave, the party victorious. They've killed a dragon!

The adventurers battle the Void Dragon and his wights in the foundry beside the Adamantine Golem. The wights keep coming, emerging from tunnels, Baz and Edinaz knocking them down almost as fast as they do. Almost. Those that get through inflict negative energy on everyone. Baz restores Silmeria, as she keeps using Momento Mori to shoot the Void Dragon, and her Chains of Perdition to drag him around. Towards the foundry, following a helpful hint from Ashes. Ashlee continues to take cover beside Silmeria, and glower curses on the Void Dragon, as her earlier Hexes activate and fade. Lysos helps Silmeria, with a Hydraulic push that moves the dragon closer to the edge of its ledge. Ashes webs up some of the tunnels the wights are emerging from, as Edinaz and Baz cut them down. The dragon is pulled right to the edge, breathes a wave of cold over all, which nearly takes out Ashes and sends Lysos towards death. Baz is forced to use some of Kor's healing energy, Ashes nearly matching his efforts with Vardama's, and Lysos recovers a little. Another shot and successful yank of the chain pulls the dragon off the ledge, down to the magma, yet it resists.

The Void Dragon is going for a crash landing.

On you.

Edinaz looks up, curses, takes a quick sidestep.

"Yes!" The big Ork yells. "YES!" The Orkish Cleric pounds his chest, "GONNA KILL! GONNA EAT!" The Ork doubles in size. "FOR KOR!"

Ashlee catches the 'In Emergencies' wand, she moves beside Lysos, "Activate."

Silmeria stares into the dragon's eyes. Another ghostly chain shimmers into reality, however, when the chains fail the Speaker takes a few dainty steps to one side.

The dragon crashes into the edge of the magma. It's long neck lashes out and it takes a grievous looking bite out of Silmeria in a spray of blood.

Lysos casts another Hydraulic Push. Water surges right into the dragon's face. It's not enough, the beast is unmoved.

And baked dry almost instantly from the heat.

Now

The wights move to join their master.

Rip. Tear. Crunch. The webbing is slowly being dealt with. It's taking time, but the horde of wights in the mines are starting to get through.

...starting.

That's the bad news. The good news is that it's still holding for the moment!

Baz and Edinaz rush up towards the Dragon, their blades cutting into the neck and trying to hack it back from Silmeria. So far, so good for them. Some harm is inflicted.

<OOC> Silmeria okay so that's +4 threat-confirm. Remember remember remember.

Ashes stands stiffly, from the earlier cold and the present shock of the Void Dragon up close. It's presence feels wrong. Plus, DRAGON!

She keeps her skull and bones parasol in front of her. It won't stop much. Anything probably, but it's in her hand. With her free one she touches the holy symbol on her breastplate. "Feiu of the Tears, let the shots fly true."

Her hand glows and she touches Silmeria's ammo pouch, a blessing for the bullets, a curse for their targets.

Now that the dragon is joining the battle directly, it has made its first mistake-- for now it's clear to Silmeria just how *small* it is! Not much bigger than herself... which contributes to her ability to shake off the dragon's fear, if not its fangs. But with Ashes enchanting her ammunition, the Speaker shoots a grin over her shoulder, then turns back.

Two more shots ring out, as Silmeria fires and reloads the breech-loading pistol with preternatural speed, and with grim exultation, sees both round dig deep into the foul wyrm's body.

The void dragon lashes out at Silmeria again. He is not happy. Jaws narrowly miss closing around the Speaker and tearing huge chunks out of her. He'll have to settle for deep gouges and dripping wounds.

The wights are not inside the chamber yet. They are trapped behind a web spell trying to bust in. The dragon is on the edge of the ledge into the magma. He is not happy about this, and is attempting to mangle Silmeria while hauling himself forward.

GAME: Lysos casts Hydraulic Push. Caster Level: 6 DC: 17

Pain. So much pain... though it is already fading, physically, thanks to the healing washing through her, the memory of it is still enough to nearly cripple Lysos. Also, she's kind of a wuss. Then her eyes snap open as she remembers what caused the pain. She screams, though with the noise of combat, the firing gun, what's probably the dragon's roards, the wights doing their ever best to get through the webbing.. well, it's just one more piece of battle noise, really. WIth little time to try and think of much else to do, Lysos gathers power and flings it as another blast of water at the dragon, doing her level best to try and push it further away from her as she scrambles further away from it.

So the dragon is unhappy.

It's hauled itself onto the ledge after crash landing on to it and boy is it unhappy. It's eyes, such as they are, are now focused on Silmeria and her chaiuns. It lunges towards them in a flurry of claw strikes, wings and bites but oinly one claw manages to find purchase, rending the Inquisitor in a spray of blood and leaving her even more wounded.

While the dragon is occupied with Silmeria, Edinaz and Baz take the opportunity to smash at it with weapons. Glancing blows, at best, he's injured but not enough to take his focus off the gallows gunner. Distant moans signal the wight's efforts are getting closer to succeeding, but the web still holds.

Ashlee maneuvers, keeping out of Silmeria's way and also the dragon's. His attention seems to be on the Speaker anyhow, so it's not too hard. She's running out of ideas, and spells, and the dragon is about as cursed as he's going to get. She spins her parasol distractingly.

Looking at Lysos and raising the wand, she receives a shake of the head. A gesture to indicate she needs it, or Silmeria. The Mourner decides to help her fellow Vardamite. She's the one with the gun after all.

Touching her holy symbol, Ashes intones, "Feiu of the Tears, keep her whole." The cool, calming energy of the Grey Lady flows through and eases Silmeria's wounds, a little.

So, the Mourner reaches out. Knowing it. Understanding the Void dragon.

She wishes she hadn't. This is a living creature, to be sure, but it's also something else. It's a dragon, but something *else* beneath all that. Something horrible and terrible and full of hate that's just oozing through it. This is something that *shouldn't exist*.

Inseperable, it's a whole.

Maybe it's dumb luck, maybe it was indeed destiny, but Edin looks up as the dragon tries to eat Silmeria. His tattoos glow silver, and he bellows "WITNESS!!" as he hurls himself at the dragon tottering on the edge of the lava. Its not, perhaps, smart, but it is effective -- insofar as the dragon doesn't seem to have been expecting that kind of foolishness. Claws scrabbling helplessly, it falls off the edge towards the lava...

Fire, reload, fire, reload... By now the shooting is steady enough to be done on autopilot, and with the dragon snuggled in to its nice warm bed, Silmeria has begun speaking in Draconic, a final blessing to speed the wayward wyrm to the proper rest it would deny every miner in this hole. Bullet after bullet continues to find its mark, and on the Speaker's face is a gentle, sweet smile.

"Sleep, lost lamb. Sleep, and awaken again in peace."

Ashlee has moved up with Silmeria, to stand silently beside her and stare downwards. She's been around Dragonspitters and Thunderbelchers, she doesn't flinch, although she does reach up to fold her large ears down and cover them with her hands. In that position, halo'd by her parasol, she locks eyes with the drake.

A living creature, yet inseperable from something vile, connected and beyond. She looks through it, to that being, so the last image seen from this minion will be of a skull, a reminder of death, and that the Grey Lady will have him, sooner or later.

The dragon howls in rage as it's knocked bacxk from the blast. It rears up to try to haul itself from the lava, but it's grip on the edge of the ledge falters and it simply starts to sink below, woozily, and then clearly burned to death by its position there.

It sinks below the lava.
... which ... starts to bubble more.

Uh oh.

Edinaz looks down, snarling at the void dragon as it's consumed. There's a pause, and he looks from side to side. "We'd better get moving."

The dropoff point is the extraction point. The diggers can be summoned there. The wights are still clamoring to get in, but the way back is clear. Clearish.

Best idea: Run.

"...So we must," Silmeria agrees grimly, reaching back to rest her shield back on its place over her pack. "Let's be about it."

Gun in hand, Silmeria leaps ahead of the party; *very* judicious use of channeled positive energy bombs employed to clear their path of stray wights, and the occasional shot to finish the job, but the Speaker has a very clear duty, now that the dragon is felled.

Secure the path back to the extraction point.

Edinaz is happy to range forwards, moving quickly, very quickly, in order to cut a way to the extraction point. Magic sword, he just kicked a dragon into lava, he's feeling pretty confident.

"I think so." Ashlee agrees, stepping back. She turns and starts to move. The Mourner isn't one for running, normally, but a dragon-fueled lava explosion is one of those exceptional things she doesn't want to see up close. Especially when the magma burns through the body to hit that cold core.

She follows as Silmeria leads, checking for Lysos, Edinaz, wherever Zaxx got to. "Baz! Kor won't like you taking a lava bath." Well, he might actually, but she wouldn't. Mostly, she's trying not to be left behind.

With Ashes lingering behind a bit, the dead running after you, and the lava exploding upwards in a massive gout upon your escape, this is going to be a narrow thing. Reaching the lift in relatively decent time, you have to pray that it's still working, or will work. Despite her duty, Silmeria finds herself falling back fairly quickly. Edinaz has the head of the path, and with Lysos and Ashes bringing up the rear, the Speaker switches by reflex to guarding their tail.

As the party reaches the lift, and the lingering slime of The Worst Wight, Silmeria guides those behind her up, bouncing restlessly on the balls of her feet. "Somebody, *please* tell me the lift works..."

Edinaz turns at the narrow opening. "Here, I'll lift everyone in." And then he does so, stuffing people into the slot dripping with ex-wight-slime.

"I need a lift." Ashlee agrees, stepping up to be shoved face first into the slime. It's easy enough to wiggle forward, except for the part where she's swimming in wight. She's not feeling any better. Rolling through, she stands and moves to wait by the controls. "Is Baz still big? He could give it a shove."

The ashen Arvec crouches, ready to help pull the next through.

Everyone is able to pile inside the elevator but for Baz, who needs a moment to let his size return to normal. The heat around you is growing more intense by the minute and the ground quakes powerfully.

The good news is that the lift worksz

The bad news is that it works slowly.

Edinaz tries to clear out the ceiling panels, to see if there's speed to be had. He stares upwards into the darkness.

Ashlee stares up into the darkness as well. "I don't have any spells that will help." She pulls at a nearby piece of the lift, testing to see if she can work it free, ready throw as much down the shaft as she can.

Silmeria stares downward. The floor of the lift is made of wood. With a thin metal frame.

"Nor I," Silmeria says, staring nervously above, then below. "...At the very least we'll want to get off the floor though. It looks... rather flammable for my liking."

"Feiu of the Tears, we need some water." Ashlee touches her breastplate, and then makes sprinkling motions with her hands. A couple gallons of water appear and splash away some of the wight goo, and wet the wood flooring of the lift a little. "A lot more water." She washes then soaks the floor.

Eventually, the lava hits the shaft you're going up.

It had to evewntuyally, didn't it? Now that there's a mini eruption going for some reason, that was inevitable.

Fortuntely, by the time it hits, you're ALMOST there and you're able to leap from the shaft onto one of the tunnels, and well, it works. But each of you are badly burned in the process. Lysos and Ashes are out of it badly, and Baz is quickly going to be using up some fo that healing magic to get them back on their feet, but ...

.. it's bad.

You're running again, for the exit. The ground is shaking. The mine is now actively collapsing inwards. More like its imploding, actally. There are times one must husband one's resources in case of emergency. Then there are the emergencies.

Being ever so briefly coated in erupting lava, and still being able to stand while your compatriot falls... This is an emergency.

Swiftly drawing a trio of potion vials from her belt pouch, Silmeria manages to feed two of them to her sister Mourner, tugging the Hobkin back to her feet. When running is possible... she runs, gulping down the third between strides.

Perhaps they got lucky, and the lava was pushed up by a bubble of gaseous stone...? One can only hope, for otherwise there may not be time to ready masks and cling to diggers.

The Grey Halls come to Ashes in a suffocating, searing experience that is every bit as horrible and painful as the death of the dragon she stared down. She barely has time to register this close brush when she's yanked back to consciousness and her feet with the asssitance of Silmeria.

"Uuuuhhhn." She moans, struggling to stand. She knows emergecy. She knows run. She grabs at Lysos. Company retreat. There are bugles, there are no bugles. She hears bugles and beats feat. Get to the horses. The worms. Get to the worm horses.

She's shoving her parasol, just the living steel frame now, into her satchel, her shield also. A loss of speed to fumble with the items to gain a burst from the decrease in weight. Air! Get the Air thing.

"How do we call them? Can we call them early?" Get on the Diggers!

It isn't long before you're out of the mine at this point. A good thing, at that, given that it seems to be collapsing *into a crater*, a bigger, deeper one than before. The ground continues to sbake and the earth falls away under your feet as you scramble away from it, but it eventually catches up with you, leaving you bouncing and rolling down a slope to come to a thumping stop, thankfully having not fallen the whole way down. The dust is thick and oppressive, but the damage to the terrain is real: this land has just *fallen in oin itself*, and there you are at the rim of a sloping crater.

All because one dragon died in lava? Really?

Ashes rolls to a stop, spreading her arms and legs out to help catch herself. She sits up, in shock from her barely healed magma induced injuries. She feels no pain. For now. She stares at the wreckage of the landscape. The crater.

"Oh," she says the first thing that comes to mind, "a self-burying dragon."

Perhaps a marker should be left. 'Dear Heth. Here lies...' No. The giant pock-mark, exploded pustule of a hole in the ground will be sufficient. Nothing further is needed.

The dragon was full of emptiness, and a void will be it's marker.

Struggling to her feet, Silmeria weaves a bit on the newly-formed gravel mound, slowly turning around just in case her head is as ready to fall off as it feels, and stares numbly at the crater they narrowly avoided being a part of.

"...Well," she says, numbly. "We just killed a dragon."

No more words are really sufficient for the magnitude of their accomplishment. Perhaps one day, dragons may fall before her gun like wheat to the scythe, but for now...

Well, they just *killed a dragon.*
