  • Title: Tower Reappears
  • Emitter: Tiasa
  • Characters: Latenat 5, Munch 10, Lothos 10, Dire Wolf 9
  • Place: Countryside outside Alexandria
  • Time: Aug 19, 2015
  • Summary: Hired by the Guild of Adventurers, to investigate a tower, one that has been seen around Alexandria in different places
  • APL: 9
  • Encounter 1: 2 Advanced Gargantuan Half-Fiend Griffons (CR 9 Each) CR 11 total

It is a fairly normal day. Well other than for the job. You were all contacted to help out the guild. It seems that a tower was seen, a tower that is where it shouldn't be. They give a bit of a briefing that this tower might be one that has been seen in different places around Alexandra lately, and is often linked to demonic or necromatic energies. Currently it is about half a day's ride from the city. Which should put it over the next rise or two as you all are heading cross country.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "free posing."

Munch hikes, his long legs and tireless pace eating up the distance like his metal jaws eat up the occasional branch. "I kinda hope for demons. Demons are fun. And spicy. Undead are just sorta bleh. Gamey and dull."

Lothos is casually moving along with the others, chuckling as Munch speaks. "Ahh demons, yea, well. I just want something ground based so I have a chance to keep out of thier reach. I'm much more useful when I'm not dodging blades or claws."

GAME: Lothos refreshes spells. GAME: Lothos casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 10 DC: 18

Dire Wolf is rather annoyed at yet another mysterious tower appearing on her hunting grounds. The last was filled with undead and other abominations. If this is the same or similar, she will see to its destruction just as the last. If any of the fools from the city come, all the better. If not, she would hardly be surprised. She takes large leaping strides at a maintainable pace, eating up istance rather quickly.

Wilderness? He doesnt do it, often. A suspicious building appearing near the city, for that Latenat can be convinced to accept a contract even if its a simple matter of a wizard using one of those portable adamantine fortresses or simmilar things.

The half-sil is traveling light, no camping quipment required for such a jaunt, even his cloak is but a ragged half-strip from where it met with a blade. Grey eyes follow the conversation at hand as Munch and Lothos chatter about what is in store for them at the unamed tower/

Munch nods to Lothos. "Maybe a little flying. Have a new trick I've been wanting to try. Works out in practice, but have yet to try it in real combat."

The tower can be seen over the next rise. It is strange how it wasn't visible till now given its size. As you get closer, you can notice that there doesn't appear to be any doors or windows in the large structure.

GAME: Dire Wolf refreshes spells. <OOC> Munch says, "Stone tower? Or wood? Bone?" <OOC> Tiasa says, "looks stone"

Lothos grunts and shakes his head, "This is some crazy stuff. So, what now, climb it, beat on it....shout and yell at it?"

Dire Wolf continues over the rise, but slows to a trot when the tower comes into rather sudden view. First come a few growls, a snort, and a rub of paw on her snout. Afterwards, she puts her snout to the air and to the ground, scenting the vicinity.

Latenat begins humming 'neath his breath, long fingered hand reaching into pockets and pouches, confirming through tactile senses where he has secreted the tools of his trade,"Doubt it." he murmurs, due to his head briefly looking down at his chest as he does the equipment check,"Illusion is in play, if we havent seen it until now."

GAME: Dire Wolf casts Greater Magic Fang. Caster Level: 9 DC: 17

Munch buzzes quietly. "Easy enough to cut a way in. Might expect that, so best cut a story or two up." The metal man pauses a moment, listening, and sighs. "-Or- we could see if there's a hidden entrance or something."

It is strangely quiet, no sounds that normally one finds in nature. Deathly quiet. There is a wide berth around the Tower itself, and even the grasses seem to be turnng brown and dead the closer one gets to the tower. The tower itself looks to be a hundred feet tall if not more, and probably at least 100ft across at the base.

GAME: Lothos casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 10 DC: 17

Lothos chants a few arcane words softly, then opens his eyes as they flash briefly to show him any magical auras in the area. "Lets see...." he murmers.

You paged Lothos with 'you are near blinded. Definitely magics in play with the Tower'

Lothos blinks rapidly and turns his head away. "Ok, yea..." He winces a bit.

Munch eyes the nice chopable tower wall a few moments, and sighs, looking around for a secret entrance, or path, or something practical.

GAME: Munch rolls perception: (2)+17: 19 <OOC> Dire Wolf says, "Are there any significant scents or tracks in the area?"

Latenat slows to a halt and places two fists apon his hips as he looks at the... for the moment, obstruction. He looks askance at Lothos as the Wytch begins chanting a spell, awaiting the results before advancing his own course of action.

You paged Dire Wolf with 'doesn't seem to be anything visible, though there are some track near to the tower, deep claw marks in the ground.' You paged Dire Wolf with 'the scent is off too, feline, avian....something else' <OOC> Tiasa says, "how are you looking Munch"

Lothos grimaces, "Its bright, too bright to tell anything specific. Just...big blob o' magic."

<OOC> Munch says, "Looking around for anything that doesn't fit... besides the tower itself, of course." You paged Munch with 'you don't see anything, and you can go around the whole base of the Tower. I need to know if you actually touch the tower.' Munch pages: Not quite yet. Give others a chance to do their thing.

Munch buzzes in annoyance, peering around, slowly making his way around the tower. Apprently not finding anything of note.

Dire Wolf snorts as she lifts her muzze from the ground. Ears swivel to catch the softskin's comment of magic. "Magi with their ridiculous towers, unnatural creatures, and delusions of potency..." She then tips her nose to the sky, loosing a loud, long howl. A call to her sisters, wind and storm, for their aid. Swirls of breeze coalsece about her and she begins to climb for the upper portions of the tower, using the very air as stairs.

GAME: Dire Wolf casts Air Walk. Caster Level: 9 DC: 18

THe Tower still looms, and going higher does not reveal anything different, seamless smooth stone walls and no openings.

Lothos looks up at the tower, not really moving too close to it. "Well, we need to do something, anyone seen one of these before? Is there a magic word? Do we fly to the top? Ring a bell?"

Munch fehs. "Bored now. Cutting a hole." Moving to the wall, the golem swings his adamantine axe....

There is a deep gong sound when the axe hits the tower. The axe doesn't seem to do anything else to the tower yet it also doesn't do anything else to the axe. There is a screeching sound coming closer now.

<OOC> Tiasa says, "perception" GAME: Lothos rolls perception: (15)+12: 27 GAME: Latenat rolls perception: (6)+12: 18 GAME: Munch rolls perception: (18)+17: 35 GAME: Dire Wolf rolls perception: (4)+18: 22

The half-sil's espression turns wry,"I dont do magic I'm afraid." he replies to Lothos' question, watching the Warforged heave to with a direct course of action. His mouth works for a moment as he considers the construct and takes the first step toward it...

There are two forms moving fast through the air towards the Tower. They start to plummet from th air.

Munch says, "....'bong'? Stone doesn't go 'bong'! ...oh, hey, Welcome Party inbound!"

<OOC> Lothos says, "Can I cast a spell before they get into melee with us?"

Dire Wolf growls at the ringing noise of the ace. Not that she faults the attempt, but the sound is strange. Head and eyes snap around when forms break the open sky in peripheral vision.

<OOC> Dire Wolf has a similar question.

Lothos looks up quickly as they spot the incoming, "Gah, fine, I assume its going to be a fight." He starts to prepare to cast a spell.

The wings of the pair of creatures whip out at the last moment and they land in the clearing about 70' from the group and the Tower. They are huge, correct that, they are bigger than that. At first look they look like griffons but they are much more massive, like they have been enlarged a few times or something and that is not it. There are two sets of wings. THe first, regular wings, the secon, are leathery and black. There are blackish red horns emerging from each of their heads too. Their eyes are the blackest black. THey roar and fasten red eyes on the group.

Flying things... the street touch knows how to deal with such things... by staying as far away from them as possible. His hands free he reaches for a loop apon his belt and whips out a leather strap, the other hand reaching into a bulging pouch to retrieve a bullet. If its good enough to catch pidgeons for supper it is good enough against... these things, whatever they are. The stone bullet is slung, but in his adrennaline-jazzed responce to react against these things the missle goes awry, the fathers along one flank proving perfct abative armor against a blunt attack apon an angle.

One of the two creatures moves with suprising speed and agility heading towards the axe wielder that rang the tower.

The other griffon beast moves forward, it almost seemed like it would pounce but that would hit the other too so it just moves up and tries to bite Munch.

GAME: Dire Wolf casts Strong Jaw. Caster Level: 9 DC: 18

Munch buzzes happily. "Neat! I've never eaten one of -those- before!" Digging his metal toes into the ground, a shower of rainbow sparkles surround the golem, lending arcane swiftness. Rubbery bladders pump toxic chemicals directly into the golems musles, alchemic reactions boosting strength and power. RAcing across the ground, Munch slams into the closer beast with all the power of... of... well, all the power of a raging barbarian...

<OOC> Tiasa says, "okay, pose, and where moving to exactly?"

Dire Wolf already called to her sisters, now she howls to her cousins, the beasts. The ancient beasts. The already larger primevil wolf becomes moreso, teeth extending and canines extanding outside of her lower jaw. She then descends through the air as if downhil, towards the gathered unnatural beasts on the ground.

Lothos takes off straight up into the air, giving some distance. He draws out a tarot card from a pouch and tosses it towards one of the griffonlike things. "I'll be cursing you now, don't worry, it won't hurt for long."

His initial foray exausted, the half-sil rogue ups the ante, drawing the paired dagger and rapier in one smooth movement charging into the side of the beast currently trying to gnaw apon the inorganic munch. Between the movement of the skirmish and the distance he has to cover however, the rapier blade whispers along the inside of one feathered thigh, close but no circumcision!

The dire wolf growls as the conjured mist irritates her skin, or perhaps its her soul. While painful, it also makes her more annoyed. The growl turns into a below as her form ripples and expands, thick dark hide emerging to supplant fur. All along her spine, white bony plates sprout, save for the tail, which grows a quartet of wicked, barbed sbone spikes.

Munch blinks, hesitating a moment as his opponent suddenly stops fighting back. Whirling around to the other foe, the metal man's axe clips the beast's head, leaving a terrible gash with exposed skull below. The follow-up attacks are far less effective, doing little other than cosmetic effect.

Monsters may not be Latenat's preferred opponents, but none can claim that he shirks his role when it comes down to the sharp and nasty end. The well-wrought rapier flickers out as the slender rogue leaps upward, driving in through its spine between its hips. His eye for vunerability is as keep as ever and vertebrare are parted as its hindquarters collapse, a peircing keen of distress rent from parted beak as the world fades away from its consciousness.

Stegasaurus lifts her tail and shifts her hips, along with a ton of her mass, to swing the tail down in a sarp overhead arc. The spikes slam into the earth, nt the creature.

Munch slips, monster blood turning solid ground to slippery mud. Sliding, the metal man's axe flies wide, more a threat to teammates than to the beast. Trying to recover, Munch swings again, still off-balance. A third swing comes around, the axe somehow reversed and backwards, only for the tail spike to drive into the griffon's eye, to deadly effect.

There is a bit of cursing behind you from the Tower and if you turn, you notice it just fading from existance. Investigation will show its not just invisible, but gone, leaving a wide circle impression sunk into the ground.

Lothos floats back to the ground, glaring at the spot the tower was at a bit ago. "This is annoying, but I did hear something so I guess there is someone behind all this. We should inform the guild.....and likely warn them not to hit the tower with an axe."

"Possibly." Latenat shrugs slightly, bringing out a cloth to lave away the ichor that had coated it,"For all we know it was just a wizard defending his Desmene. Anyone know what the guardians were anyway?"

Munch blinks at Lothos. "...why? Worked out well enough. Though next time I'll remember to power up first and swing harder." So saying, he relaxes, swollen muscles shrinking in size, slumping slightly at the expended effort as a small could of noxious, but not toxic, vapors form around him.

Stegasaurus is denied so much as drawing blood on the creatures. She turns her ire to the tower, only to find that it is fading from view. She tramples to it and takes a swing with her tail, but she's denied even that.

THe creatures seem to be some kind of demon griffon or a crossbreed between the two. Other than them there doesn't appear to be signs of anything else. Natural sounds are returning, birds, and all that. Nothing left but to head back to the guild and get paid.
