About Standard PRPs

A Standard Player-Run Plot (Standard PRP) involves heroic adventure and challenge, which is run by a PRP runner as a DM and at least two player character (PC) participants. A single session of a Standard PRP may have up to two encounters, which can be combat encounters and/or non-combat encounters, such as disarming or bypassing a trap.

Tenebrae has a system of trust that allows any player the ability to run a Standard PRP without having to get the plot idea preapproved by staff. Standard PRPs can be run anytime. They are not death-consent, so running and participating in a Standard PRP is great for spending time with the community, as well as trying out new techniques and ideas. Standard PRPs are the most common type of PRP.

If you want to run a Standard PRP, you can run one, but take a look at the restrictions (detailed in the Encounters and Challenges section) before you craft your encounter(s). Post a +event (see +help events for more information) for your Standard PRP and confirm the players in attendance. A Standard PRP may take more than one session to resolve; each session (or part) may be submitted for rewards separately or submitted in batches of two sessions for rewards. (This is to prevent long-running arcs that go without rewards for players or runners.)

A PRP runner may ask a fellow player or a staff member to assist them as a DM; this player or staff member cannot be a participant in the PRP on one of their own player characters. The DM assistant receives a reward equal to the PRP runner’s.

A PRP runner may not include their own player character as a player participant in the PRP or receive awards as a player in addition to runner awards, but can include their player character in a role similar to a quest-giver NPC, the victim of a crime (such as a kidnapping), and more.

Awards
  • XP and gold for every encounter in a session of a Standard PRP (limit of 2 encounters per session).

Standard PRPs, given their reduced risk, receive a somewhat smaller amount of gold and XP compared to Death Consent PRPs and staffer events. The reward for running a PRP and the reward for playing in a PRP are scaled to the individual level of a participant.

Runners receive one level above their own in rewards if their PRP is an event listed as Open on the +events board and is posted at least a day before the time of the event. ‘Off the cuff’ PRPs and closed PRPs (PRPs listed as give the PRP runner a reward equal to their level.

Encounters and Challenges
  • Limit of two encounters per session.
  • When designing an encounter, use a range of Average Party Level (APL) of -1 to +2. Any encounter below or above this APL range is not eligible for rewards. To learn more about encounter design, see How to Design an Encounter.
  • T1 (levels 2-5) Standard PRPs are not permitted to use creatures that have level drain and ability score drain abilities. Please be careful with the following in T1 Standard PRPs: incorporeal creatures, creatures with Damage Reduction (DR), swarm creatures, and creatures with ability score damage abilities. We do not recommend using these creatures for lower-level T1 parties, especially if you’re an inexperienced runner.
  • T2 (levels 6-10) Standard PRPs are not permitted to use creatures that have level drain and ability score drain abilities.
  • T3 (levels 11-15) Standard PRPs and T4 (levels 16-20) Standard PRPs are permitted to use creatures that have level drain and ability score drain abilities.
  • Use only creatures and creature templates from the approved sources on the World Bestiary page. You may also add player character classes to creatures. However, keep in mind that stacking classes and templates may drastically affect the CR of a creature. Dragons and demiliches are reserved for staff-only events to keep them unique. Catfolk, driders, and drow are not in theme and therefore are not permitted.
  • If you want to use a creature from a source that is not approved, or if you want to check that a creature that you’ve customized with templates and classes is balanced, submit the creature for approval in a +request/rules job.
  • While you can't create items, if players wish to purchase minor items, such as potions or wands of healing, this is okay! Ask them to file a purchase request or, if not possible, notate that they purchased one in your PRP submission and (if applicable) how many charges were used. Staff can take care of this upon rewarding the PRP.

Permanent Effects
  • If a PC ever reaches a point where they would normally (in traditional Pathfinder gameplay) die while in a standard PRP, the plot runner must presume the character is simply teetering on death's door and will recover following the scene's conclusion.
  • Any debilitating effects on a PC that would normally (in traditional Pathfinder gameplay) go beyond the standard PRP's duration are cleared once it ends.
  • Items cannot be destroyed in a Standard PRP. If items are damaged, they will be repaired fully at the end of the scene.

How to Submit a PRP

To Submit a PRP...
1. Log your PRP, or have someone log your PRP for you.
Include:
  • All poses.
  • All +rolls.
  • All relevant OOC chatter or comments.
2. Post your log.
Need help? See How to Post a Log.
3. Let us know you ran! Send in a +request/prp job.
Include in the +request job:
  • A link to the PRP log on the wiki.
  • The player characters (PCs) that participated and their levels.
  • The type of PrP (Standard or Death Consent), and if it was an open PRP (anyone can join) or a closed PRP (intended for a specific group of players).
  • The encounter(s), including creature stat blocks and their sources.
  • Any player purchases that were not taken care of by a +request submitted by players.
  • If it's a Death Consent PRP: Any lasting effects (drains, etc).
  • Any rumors you want posted to the Rumors bboard (please include a write-up so staff doesn't have to write it).
  • Any Bonuses you're claiming.
  • If anyone's RP was particularly awesome or if someone was unhelpful to your experience on some level (such as unannounced and lengthy AFKs and more).

Staff reserves the discretion, based on PRP runner submissions, to increase rewards for players who are are awesome or helpful in PRPs and to reduce or cancel rewards for players who pose 1 to 3 times before dropping out of the PRP. A PRP runner may use their PRP submission to indicate that they do not want to run for a character/player again. See Game Policies for more information.

4. Ensure your PRP is posted to the +events board and the players are all confirmed on the event description.
Even if this is after the fact due to running a PRP off the cuff. Just make sure to mark your event as open or closed!
