  • Summary: A late night stroll through the Lower Gardens is interrupted by the smell of fire. Then, the sight of it. A building beside the Soldier's Defense has gone up. A middle-aged woman stumbles out, saying others are trapped inside. Thorn starts conjuring water, while Cryo hands Lily to Pasithea to watch and puts on some protective spells. Merek adds some to her as well, then goes to give medical attention to the escaped woman. Morgan watches. Cryo runs inside, is blinded by smoke but has her draconic blindsense and is able to search through the building with that. She brings out several. Stjepan and Tenoc arrive, having followed the smoke, and join her in evacuating the building. Merek adds more water, preventing the spread. Finally it's all clear, even the orange cat was saved. No one left inside; no one died. Verba, the first woman out, exclaims that there was 'nothing there' as the other acolytes try to hush her. Merek investigates inside, and declares they were doing scrying. Cryo suggests that it was on Animus, and that 'nothing' is not good news in this case. Merek, and the others, agree to inform Griva.

-=--=--=--=--=--<* A06: Lower Alexandrian Gardens District *>=--=--=--=--=--=-

The city is divided, unofficially, into Upper Alexandria and Lower Alexandria. The Upper resides further up on the slope of the mountain, and rests to the east of the great river. The Lower resides to the west of it, and if the Lower could be said to have a heart, this verdant park might be its center.

Amid all the bustle of the Lower City, its Gardens District provides a peaceful respite. The warmth of Althea holds sway here, and though Daeus receives the occasional nod, this is clearly Her domain. She shares it with Dana, in the verdant green of this area. Vines and trees, remain green no matter the season and numerous flowers bloom along the park's walkways. Faerie-light lanterns hang from branches and along hedgerows.

A number of shops may be found here, most notably the city hospital, for which the park was originally built. Though now open to the public, the gardens by and large, remain underneath the hospital's care. However, in the Althean tradition, much of the work is provided by volunteers.

It's a lovely evening in Alexandria, what, with the dark clouds and the starless sky and the cold wind. You know, just great.

People are going about their evening business as they are wont to do and for wahtever reason, you happen to be in the ower city, passing near to the large complex that is the Soldier's Defense.

Morgan comes walking in the area with a nice skip to each step. On her arm is a bag full of what seems to be small pouches of some kind.

Thorn has finally made it to the city - and there's probably urban legends of the half-sil that rolled out of the wilderness in nothing but sandals, a breechclout, and a bear-skin shoulder-cape with a ferret on his head. "See, Bastard? Same wilderness as anywhere. Just the terrain is different. There's rats, there's birds, there's raccoons and dogs and cats-"

Pasithea is the sleepy luchtbundled up against the cold. Why she's up past sundown is anyone's guess but there she is, slowly making her way towards harth and home. Pausing every once in a while to nearly sleep apon her feet.

The Soldier's Defense holds a lot of bad memories for Cryosanthia. She rubs at the back of her left hand, through her whitescale gloves. It's itching again. She's wearing something oddly appropriate for the season, a white velvet dress with furred ruffs at the collar, hem, waist and wrists. It's covered in little blue snowflake patterns.

On her shoulders is a haversack, and on that is a small lizard person in a large pink parka that has similar ruffs as Cryo's and all but hides her. She's hugging the whitescale's neck and seems to be asleep, and is also covered by a rather large hood that's part of the dress.

Staring, yet not staring at the Soldier's Defense, Cryo nearly runs into Pasithea. She halts, "Apologies," and steps around her.

The smell hits you first.

It's the smoke, from somewhere. Definitely acrid. Something is on fire.

With a little looking ar ound, several people (incuding you) notice that there's smoke building in one of the many residential houses near the Soldier's DEfense here in the trade.

Well, if you're going to have a house fire, this is definitely the place to do it.

Morgan takes a look to the smoke rising from a house "well the day I did not ready the right spells." she floats up to take a look hoping she does not see any one at the angleshe is at. "please dont have any one in it." said to her self.

Merek walks along and into the gardens district, which is where he often works on the plants as well as the flowers. The man notices that smoke that looks to be from one of the places along the street, then begins walking that way.

"Ah... fire? FIRE!" Cryosanthia shouts the obvious. She starts moving in the direction of it. That's what adventurers do. "Someone get a Water Truck. Anyone who has fire protection, or detect people spells, come on."

She points at a random bystander, "You, get a water truck."

Aya is a strong proponent and visitor of the gardens. They are a part of the major north-south thoroughfare of the lower city, afterall. She arrives from the south, noting the scent of smoke in the air. Where's there's smoke, there is typically... yes, well, Cryosanthia seems to know that one also.

Pasithea nods to Cryo at first about the almost bumping into her. This is she is used to. The shouts of fire and calls for water are new. She firces a eye open with a finger and looks about. "Need... get people out... out of buildings." And she starts to trot over to the affected building and those nbear it.

GAME: Thorn casts Create Water. Caster Level: 1 DC: 13

Thorn's nostrils flare, and then the Ferret's nose twitches. "Fire... and not a campfire. A big fire." He gathers his cloak along, and then looks up and catches the refraction of light on smoke. "...Like trying to stem a flood with a mud hill," He says, before he trots up to the burning house, unstraps his spear and leans on it with both hands, and begin murmuring in Sildanyari, sotto voce, willing the water to congeal out of the air and rain down over the licking flames, in a steady downpour. It isn't enough, but it's all he has - and it isn't nothing.

Morgan keeps drifting up into the sky, and then away.

... indeed, a moment after Thorn's declaration, a nearby house's roof catches a flame. A woman staggers out from it, wheezing heavily. "... more inside," she sputters. More people are starting to turn, stare, pointing and yelling for help and cries of 'fire' going up.

That said, steam is being produced in voluminous amounts by Thorn's prayer and it does in fact keep it from spreading to the nearby buildings, or any further along it's roof. It is, as the say, not nothing.

The woman wheezes again, a mid-forties human with greying hair, "Please, help them!"

GAME: Merek casts Draconic Reservoir. Caster Level: 11 DC: 18

"Yes! More of that!" Cryo sees the conjured water, but not the source, and the fleeing woman confirms. There are more inside.

Fire is not the icy sith's friend. Nor is it Lily's. The whitescale quickly looks around, her gaze settles on the Lucht she nearly ran over. She trusts Luchts, and Lily knows them. She slips the carnation scale down and hisses at her in draconic, "Stay with thiss lady. Ssassa hass to do things," in tradespeech she begs Pasithea, "Watch her please, while I'm inside."

Turning, her hands twist through arcane gestures, and her scales trickle with light. The spell settles on her, she calls out, "Anyone with Detect Thoughts, or Detect Life, or a spell that can see in smoke, that would help!" She advances on the steps, taking a huge breath. There are only a couple flaws to her plan. She can't see in smoke, and despite her lithe form, she's heavy. Fire-weakened floors might not hold. Part of the fun, she guesses.

Merek looks over to Cryosanthia while he nods a bit, noticing the woman will be going in to assist within the house. "Take this with you," he notes, while he makes a gesture with a hand to begin weaving that magic, then he speaks with word in Draconic. The energy seems to colaesce about the woman and begins to create an inner draconic reservoir, which will allow the woman to take in fire as if the energy was one with the sith-makar. "With that and your spell, you can stay in there a while."

Then the man looks to the woman, and begins assisting, "Smoke inhalation, someone assist me! I am setting up triage, will be alright."

Pasithea is about to step into a burning structure, foolishly most likely. Suddenly she has a knapsack and with a young lizardling in it. She blinks.. then again and then nods. Cryo is larger and likely faster. "Will watch..keep safe." She slowly carries the youngling away.

The essence of the Old Magic is to know the language of the world as whispered in the wind among the stones, to know what to look for and what to say and do so that the world will respond to you - to extend one's mind and spirit and commune with the living world. The Craft teaches that the world is living everywhere, in ways that aren't always beautiful to the conventional eye. Thorn opens one eye, as his lips continue to move and water continues to pour down over the roof. Wet wood smoulders, but is less likely to burn.

GAME: Thorn casts Create Water. Caster Level: 1 DC: 13

Being able to summon water on demand really helps.

The fire, of course, is still dangerous. Even the limited amount of water being conjured a bit at a time can help prevent the spread that's viisble. It won't do much for what's going on on inside.

...which brings us to Cryosanthia, who definitely seems able to resist the fire, if not the dangers of the smoke.

Guardsmen are starting to come up the street. Alexandria is a heavily patrolled city, after all.

GAME: Cryosanthia rolls perception: (6)+6: 12

It's just like breathing underwater, Cryosanthia tells herself, except you don't let the water in. Her nostrils close up, her ear frills fold down and cover her earholes. Her eyescales, they do their job. She may not be able to see but the smoke isn't bothering her. Too much. Yet.

What isn't on fire is obscured as the furniture and walls go. What isn't bright fire is black. The whitescale finds a wall and uses it to guide herself. She wants to search the ground floor first. Her free hand casts again, Ghost Sounds cantrip to call out "'Hello! Please Answer! I'm here to help!'"

GAME: Merek rolls heal: (3)+20: 23

Merek nods a bit while Cryosanthia walks along into the place. The man watches while Pasithea and Thorn work on their own tasks. There's a shift while he takes the kit with him, to begin assisting the woman with medical treatment.

Stjepan is just trotting up towards the fire from down the street. He, at least, has a pretty good vantage point to see what's going on.

Pasithea gets a safe distance way where Lily can still see but be safe. The lucht whispers soft things to her and even a soft lulaby. Anything she can do to keep the little one calm perhaps even sleepy.

Lily is wide awake! Something exciting is going on! She's looking around with wide eyes... until she hears the lulaby and drifts off in the sleepy sorceress' care.

At the moment, a fire burns in a somewhat controlled manner at a residence hear in the Lower Trade's. Guards are on their way to start taking control of the situation, and what's better, is you're near enough to the Soldier's Defense that a few of the not-as-busy acolytes will no doubt soon be here to investigate the commotion themselves.

One by one, Cryosanthia begins to pull people free from the building with Thorn keeping the flames under control with water magic.

It's a diverse group, actually. A halfling, a human, an .. orc? That last one probably took a lot out of Crysoanthia.

Despite the diversity, they all wear a pin on their collars, marking them as members of the Resurrectionists -- a group dedicated to the possible restoration of the fallen God Animus, the pin bearing his former divine symbol of the scales of balance.

Merek looks to the people that Cryosanthia brings about, then he takes a moment to begin assisting them with the acolytes, "Well, this was clearly an arson upon the group," he notes to anyone listening. Well, it's always something, while he watches.

Stjepan peers forwards, spotting the pins. "Well, shit." He pushes through the crowd, and looks to Cryosanthia. "Can you use more hands inside?"

That orc took a bit of hauling. Learn Reduce Person, Cryo tells herself, making a note for another day. As she pulls a victim out, she gasps several new breaths to keep the air in her lungs as fresh as possible.

"Yes Merek, that's clear! I told them those pins were targets. Can't you open a portal to the plane of water?"

She quickly looks the bodies over, "Where's Griva? Oh Scales and Egg-Smashers."

A nod to Stjepan, "Yes, there's still more inside. Get some fire protection and follow me." She's running back in. Her cantrip calling for Griva and anyone else to make some noise.

Pasithea is at a loss to what things the others as speaking about. The pins on clothing going unnoticed. She continues to watch over the Lily and stay awake herself. She starts counting people that have come out of the flaming building and shuffles over to one of the resuced folk that can speak. "How many.. were inside? Do you know?"

GAME: Merek casts Create Water. Caster Level: 12 DC: 14
<OOC> Merek says, "24 gallons."

Merek looks to the place, "No, but I will try to do you one better," he notes then to Cryosanthia, while he takes a moment to lift up a hand, speaking in the Aquan language. The water begins to pour along upon that roof, and slides along into the places that are left open from the flame. It is a lot of water.

GAME: Stjepan used a Potion of Protection from Energy Fire.

Stjepan snatches a potion from his belt, downs it, and rushes after Cryo. Ho-ho-ho, she's got a breaching tool now.

Thorn looks up, opening both eyes, as his own modest rain of water is suddenly accompanied by what he can only call the outpouring of a flood. Well, that's the difference between a neophyte at the Old Magic and someone with far more experience. Still, the more the better, so he continues quietly mouthing the Words.

GAME: Thorn casts Create Water. Caster Level: 1 DC: 13

Cryosanthia keep methodically searching, using the cantrip to call for people. Ground floor, upstairs, then basement.

Heat. Flames. Burning.

Unused to cities Tenoc is, but even he noted quickly on-- so much, so close, so near-- fire was a danger there. Perhaps unexpecterd here, but still-- Fire, like an eager, rampant Swiftclaw, running wild if given half a chance. And sometimes not even that.

"...ssk. Softskins," the Makar rumbles, rolling his eyes before-- voice, sound. Eggwatcher!

The small few trinkets are dropped immediately; sedate, lazy step become a swift run. Must answer call for aid!

Oh, and save silly softskins from flames. Because they do not appreciate proper, good fires! Or buildings on fire. Or hot stones. Or...

Tenoc came to city because-- escort! For Eggwatcher and daughter foundling. Yus. And get shiny copper coins/discs for jewelry later. And maaaaaaaybe sweet things. And more paper for Lily's adventuresome craftings! He traces her alarm-scent, hear cantrip call, smell fire. Reasons to make sudden haste !He is fire *resistant*! Might be close enough to fireproof for now!

Stjepan follows Cryo's lead, opens doors or walls as appropriate

There's some gasps from the crowd as the veritable torrent of water opens up on the roof, producing voluminous amounts of steam. Still, this does little for the fire *inside* the home that Cyrosanthia and now Sjepan are contending with. They are able to locate one last person inside and bring them out, where the trio of acolytes from the Soldier's Defenser who arrived in the interim have set out to treat them.

The initial wheezing woman, the one of them who had done the best in getting out in the first place, is starting to recover some of her breath. "Thank you," she offers. "Animus' blessing be on you, when he canb bless again."

Her voice is slightly wry.

GAME: Merek rolls heal: (6)+20: 26

Merek pulls up the hood of what he's wearing, while he takes a moment looking along upon all of the people coming from the place. He nods to the woman, "Welcome." Then he begins to treat everyone that he can, working to set up triage with the acolyte people.

GAME: Thorn casts Create Water. Caster Level: 1 DC: 13

Thorn focuses his attention now on making sure the flames don't spread, continuing to conjure water to make sure the nearby buildings are good and wet, his fingers tightening around the haft of his spear, sweat beading on his skin and dripping off his body despite the winter cool - magic, even a simple spell, is hard work to do over a long amount of time.

"Thanks Merek! And you." Cryo has finally noticed Thorn during her brief appearances. "Can you send some through the doorways, and advance it along as fires go out?"

Stjepan is helping a lot, knocking through the walls, and Tenoc has appeared. Tailthumps! Yes! Tenoc will help.

"Do we have a count? How many are left inside. Which rooms?" The whitescale waits for an answer but doesn't wait too long. There might not be one. She's got a methodical search going, she'll find everyone eventually but some shortcuts would be appreciated. Several more breaths to clear her lungs, and she dashes in again.

Stjepan emerges, covering in sooth and splinters. He carries a person (looking like a child in his arms) out, places them down, then plunges back in after Tenoc and Cryosanthia.

Tenoc chuffs a mighty, mighty chuff! Disapproval at risking Cryosanthia's own self, but-- part of Watcher training. No more deny it than Tenoc could his own Hunter's training, and as likely to stop it. So--!

Barely taking time to set his spear aside, he plunges after Cryosanthia into the burning ruins, nostrils clamping instinctively to smoke and heat. Delicious heat. Tasty heat. Almost like--

Hssk. Focus!

With the help of the acolytes, there's a little less fire to contend with this go around and more people are coming to combat the brief blaze. No one else is found alive in the buillding, but Stejpan DOES find an orange cat to save.

Yay cat.

Still, it looks like you've cleared the place. The source of the blaze appears to have been a round t able in the center of the dining area witth what looks like a pillar of flame having gouted to the ceiling.

That'd do it.

Meanwhile, outside, one of the acolytes moves to assit Thorn.

"Thank you," he tells him.

No one died. Some are singed, most have smoke inhalation. Seems like they were dazed by the blast.

"Welcome," Merek would offer along to Cryo, while he takes the time to begin patching people. "Anyone know what it was that did all of this, people that didn't like you all?" he asks. The man takes a moment to look to everyone, nodding to Thorn, "You did well," he would note.

GAME: Merek rolls heal: (14)+20: 34

Stjepan snuggles the kitty, petting it with his enormous hands. He continues to give it snuggles as he moves towards the acolytes. "So," he coughs, "a table exploded? What was on it?"

Once more firefighters are on the scene, Thorn instead moves among the rescued - using some wooden cups proffered from someplace nearby, he waves a hand over them, and they magically fill with pure, clean, cool water to drink. He looks up, and then muses, "We. We did well, the many. Not the one. But the praise is nice." He beams.

Cryo emerges for more air without a rescue, she relays what she's seen, "I think that's everyone. If someone has a Detect Thoughts or can confirm a head count, that would... uh confirm. Looks like it started in the dining area."

Did something go wrong with the fondue? Best not to ask. The whitescale herself is fine, the spells having protected her. She's covered in soot and a lot darker than usual. The healing seems to be handled, and Cryo knows she's terrible at that. Listening, she looks around for Tenoc and goes to check on Pasithea and Lily.

Slowly, the others are starting to recover as the acoyltes of Althea take them towards the Soldier's Defense. Most of them are singed, a little worse for wear, and harmed by smoke no doubt. They are graciously accepting the offered water, too, where possible. It seems like whatever happened was a sudden blast and it's left them dazed.

The greying, forty something human woman with the wheezing is still trying to talk, "There was nothing! You don't understand...!"

The acolytes slowly work to hush her, trying to soothe and carry her back towards the Defense.

"Wait, what was nothing?" Cryo asks, "Where you looking at... what exploded?"

It is a few minutes more before the Sith Hunter emerges from the charred ruin. Eyes quiet, his posture and scent confirm what has already been surmised. "None remain," he rumbles, broken Tradespeak even more jagged than normal. Subtle signs-- heavier-than-usual breathing. He searched hard, and *fast*. His eyes first run to the other Makar present, relaxing at sight. Relief scent-- no casualties!

Silently, he retrieve his spear, coming back over to stand behind the Whitescale.

Stjepan continues to cuddle the cat, giving it calming scritches. "Is this someone's cat?" he asks, before looking at Cryo. "It's amazing how flammable nothing is."

GAME: Merek casts Arcane Sight. Caster Level: 11 DC: 18

There's only faint magical residue, mostly from the adventurers. From outside, anyway.

Merek stands up, while he peeks from that hood along to the people. "Alright, give me a moment," he notes, then he begins to draw hands to chant, his eyes beginning to glow an ethereal blue along with the golden. He then begins to walk to the building, and steps along inside even while he draws a Draconic Reservoir onto him as well.

GAME: Merek casts Draconic Reservoir. Caster Level: 11 DC: 18

The Seer will be searching inside.

"Wait, don't go in there!"

The guards are calling after Merek but it's too late. The building is getting increasingly dangerous, after all, but it's hardly relevant. The acolytes are trying to calm the woman. She looks towards you, "Tell Griva! Tell here that Varba said there was nothing there."

And then she's off, being whisked away by acolytes for treatment.

It takes a little bit, but Merek seems to be coming back from within the place. He then looks to the building, with soot upon that attire which he wears. There's a lift of the hand while he growls, his voice Draconic in an ancient dialect, then the flame that was within will be placed upon a mist along the building.

"Flame to flame," the man then notes, while he comes upon the group when they are finished listening to the woman. "Divination Magic, I think they were trying to contact something. They drew attention, likely from another of the Planes. Whatever they're looking for, well Griva will likely know."

Stjepan looks down at the kitty. "Do you have a name, Smoky?" He blinks at it. "Let's go to the docks and get you some food." He looks up. "Varba said there was nothing there and then fire? Sure."

"I don't know who the cat belongs to." Cryosanthia says, looking at it. There were cats in Am'shere. Giant striped versions of that little orange one, that could snap a youngling up in one bite. There roles are reversed now, but she still feels unsettled meeting reptilian eyes in a furred form.

Then the older woman's answer smacks her right across the snout, that's what she was after, "Ok! Uh... ok."

She stands there, stunned and thinking about it. Her hands go through an automatic motion, casting prestidigitation, cleaning herself off, cleaning herself a second time. The Mis... No! This is normal washing down. Lily gets some too. Tenoc will be cleaned whether he wants it or not if he's nearby also. Cryosanthia settles down.

"That's... that's not good news. Merek, they were looking for Animus. They're the Resurrectionists, what else would they be looking for? And where they were looking, they saw nothing. That's serious."

Thorn considers examining the injuries of the rescued, but leaves that to healers more proficient than him. He grabs the ferret and sniffs him, before he wrinkles his nose. "You need a bath, Bastard." Then he sniffs himself, "...I smell like smoke too. I suppose I'll have to get a room at the inn, they'll get upset if I wash in the fountain. I only have to make that mistake once!"

Tenoc exhales slowly, catching his breath over the moments. He flicks a glance towards Cryo, turning away again towards the wrecked building.

Quiet gesture, small-- ward against evil spirits. Not spooked, but... mage-things. Best to be cautious. He remains silent after, standing watchful guard-- regardless that one may have a hard time *stabbing* Fiery Beings From Beyond, but still....

"Thannks for the help, everyone. Merek for the spells, and you," Cryo nods in the direction of Thorn, there haven't been introductions, "Stjepan, Tenoc, also. Glad you were in there to help."

She picks up Lily and her knapsack, and sets them back in place, then picks up Pasithea as well. They both seem to be in dreamland. "This one is going somewhere, for the night. Come with Tenoc. We, someone, should find Griva to tell her; this one will make an effort in the morning. I need to sleep now."

Tenoc nods, rumbling evenly. He steps back (short distance!), gathering his discarded itesm in their own rugged knapsack. Quick to return, every inch of him stern. So stern.

Mostly. Sleeping Lily! And Pasi. Heaving sigh!

"You did not wait for me," he manages, Draconic hissing a quiet murmur. SO DISAPPROVE.

...and relent. He reaches into the sack, glancing around carefully before sliding the white Sith a small fruit. Mango!

"Mrrmmmmhmm." Cryo answers, the mango already held in her mouth.

A tiny thing-- tailthump! Quietly. Tenoc rumbles a good-natured chuckle, eyes glittering. Gazing back at the ruin again, rumbling quietly.

"....were trying to make sunning stone that is ofr night?" he suggests quizzically.

Merek nods along to everyone while he takes a moment to walk the way on from the place, "I will speak to the people that need to know before Griva," he notes.

Thorn simply shrugs his shoulders. "It was instinct." He says, as if it's no great thing. "I simply acted on it."

Cryo keeps sucking on the mango, and doesn't answer. She carries Lily on her shoulders, and Pasithea in one arm. She takes hold of Tenoc's hand and leads him in the direction of the Fernwood. She knows a few people there that can lend her a room. Everyone remaining gets a dip of her head as she departs.

Tenoc grips his tepoztopill tighter, a last glance about as his eyues adjust from the relative brightness inside. A long glance towards the others (cat!), he moves off with the Speaker and her cargo. Not about to let them out of sight this time!
