  • Title: Renew the Pact: The Hand of Asumit, Part 15
  • Emitter: Whirlpool
  • Characters: Cesran, Seldan, Cryosanthia, Serene, Karelin, Aya, Merek
  • Place: The Ethereal Sea of Mana
  • Time: Tuesday, August 17, 2021, 9:26 PM
  • Summary: The skies part, and the light of Eluna shines down, filling those who are pulling in the Sea of Mana to empower the ceremony with the ability to endure the pain. But not before Cryosanthia screamed a prayer that traveled back through her bloodline, which is answered by a distant ancestor. Cryosanthia is transformed.

Cryosanthia is a Dragon!

The sudden appearance of a White Dragon in their midst takes all by surprise, though Cryo is recognized as her former self by her markings and position. Seldan, Serene and Aya struggle with the powers flowing through them and continue the ceremony to drive the void creature from this reality. Everyone feels a lingering touch, from Merek. His death was not in vain, his sacrifice protects them all. Cryo is disoriented from the change, and uncertain until she realizes she must stand in to represent the Dark Dragonfather, Maugrim, as a true descendant. The moon strikes the creature, destroying it's threads of unravelling, and everyone knows: Strike now. Karelin charges, driving his blade deep. He is followed by Aya, who delivers a flurry of blows. Cesran unleashes his most powerful spell through Ral-Sara, as Cryo-as-Maugrim launches herself to close to claws, blasting a cold breath across. Seldan, with a prayer and trust in his goddess, overflowing with mana, strikes at its heart. Serene follows, taking the evil copy of Seldan's blade and her own holy sword, forcing the warring energies together, to fall as a spear of light and lance the creature.

Previously

Everyone is on rocks, floating above the Sea of Mana. The void whirlpool has thrown up strands of unreality, caging each temporary sanctuary in. Cesran is invisible, Griva has vanished. Everyone is throwing what they can at the creature, yet the results are... unclear. Cryosanthia has an epiphany, their alternate selves showed them how to fail. Their favourite default strategies, their 'big hammers' won't work. Something else is required. Cesran's illusion is the inspiration, re-enact the Sealing of the Void with the symbolic and physical representations on hand. Reunion and Discord, as Good and Evil; Ral-Sara, Cesran's dragon-staff, as Neutral; Seldan, Serene and Merek, as Daeus by proxy of the reflected light he gives Eluna; Griva, as Animus; leaving... Aya? An anointed weapon of the shattered disc, representing Maugrim. Griva re-awakens and everyone agrees this is a plan and co-ordinates. Unexpectedly, without pomp, circumstance or meaning, Merek dies as the strands of the Unraveler touch him. Everyone is shocked, Cryo, uncertain, attempts to duplicate his channeling of the Sea of Mana, and manages to briefly contain some of its power in exchange for great pain. She is joined by Cesran, who also opens himself up to it, as they await the guidance of Griva, Seldan and ultimately Serene who is leading them. Their sacrifices do not go unnoticed.

... the sea of mana is not a place where this could be done lightly. Accepting this much mana into themselves, letting the Sea itself suffuse them, will not be without consequences. Each of them is clearly in pain, the magic burning up their insides, torching them as it lights up all around them, blazing out their eyes alongside blood, skin blackening and charring in places where the energy is simply too much to physically bear.

...but the do it. Bear it. Carry it. Call down the Legacy of the Gods, the Great Seal of the Void.

Typically, calling out to the Gods like this isn't going to have too much of an impact. They're bound not to interfere in the affairs of man in a physical way, their avatars long dead from the Great War of the Gods so many millennia ago, by legend, but then... you're not in reality, are you?

You are in the Sea of Mana.

The sky above the tower splits open and visible in and of itself is the Moon. The silver moon, Eluna. A sign of her favor, perhaps, or perhaps her attention has been drawn to the Sea of Mana in this spot itself by the presence of two of her champions, and the work of those supporting them?

The great void abomination's howls grow louder, thunder in your ears. Thunder that feels like a pressure building in your skull that wants to rend it open. The kind of pain that demons dream of inflicting in their wildest hopes.

Soft, silver light falls over you and that pain seems to dissipate.

The Grace of the Gods is real, for a moment.

Now

Cesran feels the pain start diminish, but that only encourages him to continue. He takes in more and more of the magical energies from the Sea of Mana. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that he would be channeling the very raw essence of magic and certainly never this much of it. He keeps his eyes locked on the great void abomination as it howls louder. He continues with the ritual, not stopping for anything as his hands are clenched on his staff. He will send this monster back to the void and heal the Sea of Mana even if it costs him his own life.

The pain fades, as it usually does... Serene is no stranger to this kind of healing. Of course, she's never experienced pain quite like that before. Though, the silver lining.. at least the pain blocked out the incessant murmuring from Discord. And of course, the soothing light caressing that pain away brings a return to the whispers.

Wanting little more than to simply toss Discord into the maw of the void creature, Serene nevertheless holds on, inwardly reveling in the touch of her goddess, the knowledge that the powers stand with them, at least for now. If the blade itself mars that light, so be it... right now, every aspect of their world needs to be represented. And so, like Cesran with his staff, Serene raises the sword, brandishing it before her, pointing it towards the abomination.

Bearing it is not the same as enjoying it. However, Aya does energetically invoke the name of Maugrim. In vain. Much vain, if the Undercommon invective is any indication. At some point it switches to Yrrch. Partly because it sounds even more insulting regardless if the listener is fluent, and partly because it is much easier to pronounce through clenched teeth. It is preferable, in her mind, to screaming.

This leaves her neither breath nor focus available to offer a strong suggestion and/or inquire concerning expediting the ritual, despite that they may well be making it up as they go. The sudden bathing in silver light is unexpected to say the least, but the easing of discomfort is not unwelcome. It is ...something. Whether boon or bane Aya is unsure, but at least they are still alive... ?

For his part, Seldan didn't pause to think before joining the impromptu ritual, because if he had, he might have hesitated, especially in the face of the searing pain that that is the touch of raw magic, burning him from the inside out. But, he holds his place, and the brief easing of it, the flood of silver moonlight, is a touch that briefly pricks his eyes with tears for the knowledge of what it means. It encourages him, it calls him, it bolsters him, and so he, too, stands fast, both hands training Reunion on the void creature, in concert and parallel with Discord and Ral-Sara. If any of them falter now ... but he's not going to.

Cryosanthia is in pain. Cryosanthia is Pain. Every muscle straining, locked and tearing itself apart. Every tendon taut, stretched to breaking, pulling from the bone. Each joint, each bone, each space between. From the arch of her back, from crown-horns through to tail-tip, arms, legs, wings, teeth, her organs. She feels everything. Pain.

She is racked, rigid, arms and legs braced, the raw magical energy boiling through her.

Scars cover her. Fine lines from the many, many surgeries of her mistress. Did she foresee this? She interfered with time. Cryosanthia is covered in patterns, lines, symbols for her spells. Pale blue scales that glow with intense light, her bones are silhouetted from within. Scales that are blackening and falling off as she mana burns her.

An agony that screams back through her ancestry, carrying with it a desperate prayer.

I don't want to die.

A prayer that is answered with a sensation felt more than it is real. Of large, white-scaled talons curling around her. A deep maternal voice, ancient and wise. A memory in her blood.

Oh little egg, you have to hatch. Let me help. The claws reach into Cryo's cracks. The claws pry...

The silver light falls on her...

Cryo's alternate self shattered into thousands of pieces. Is Cryo duplicating her fate? Her scars grow wider, splitting with illumination. She expands, longer, taller, muscles swelling with power. Her wings become great canopies, her neck stretches, holding up a heavy head. Her tail lengthens as she drops to all fours, becoming a size that can contain the energy she's tapped.

No longer pain.

Cryosanthia is a Dragon.

Silence falls for a moment. Like the sea finds tranquility for just a moment.

...and then there's a *roar*. A maddened, enraged roar, as if the very sight of the Gods has left the Unraveler in an even greater furor than ever before. So many of its tendrils reach up towards the sky, grabbing hold of the 'moon', or at least like they want to. Stretching impossibly far into the sky, they suddenly fossilize and shatter into shards of crystal that rain down from the sky.

Now that the pain fades, Aya feels... different...? 'Empowered' wouldn't be the right term, as she learned long ago learned to feel such. Originally, she believed it from a divine source, but that was merely what said source wanted her to believe.

Perhaps awed would fit best. The Sea of Mana is ...interesting. The Void Thing is ...disturbing. The current THIS is ... more. Not the least portion of this is the white-scale expanding before her eyes into her ancestry ... patron ... ultimate form?

Perhaps 'awed' is an understatement. Where have the simple nights gone? The simple game of 'Which passerby has a dagger in hand with my back in mind?'

Cesran is in awe of Cryosanthia as she changes into the beautiful form of a dragon. It's one thing to be able to do it yourself, but it's another to watch someone else take on such an amazing form. He gives a little smile, "Good for you Cryosanthia." He says as he turns back to the task at hand.

Feeling the power of the Sea of Mana flowing through him, Cesran throws open all the gates of his mind and body, letting the raw magical energy flow through him to power this ritual. It may not hurt, but enormity of the magic he's using mark his skin where his veins and arteries are as he turns his own body into a network of ley lines. He gives everything he has, drawing deep down into reserves of strength that he scarcely knew he had.

Moonlight refracts through those billions of shattered crystal fragments as the blackness recedes, glinting off of every surface and flooding the Sea of Mana with Eluna's blessing. Her presence floods through Seldan, a blessing and benison amid the searing agony of magical overload that soothes and eases, encourages and reminds. Now in its thrall, only one thought floods Seldan's mind - _she is with us. Finish it!_

And then there is a second thought.

Thoughts of a giant - white dragon? Standing behind him?

He almost loses the thread, head snapping to face this new threat -

But it stands where Cryosanthia was. Spells under the skin and all. -Whoa-. He'll have to ask about that one later, but truly has Eluna blessed all of them.

Which reminds him to finish their task. For Her. For all. He turns his attention back towards the void creature, leveling Reunion anew, opening himself fully and giving himself over to Her will and to the magic.

Cryosanthia is disoriented and delirious as her senses return. The torturous sensations have lessened, she can bear them under the grace of the gods, with her new body. A body both the same and strange, everything in a slightly different place, and bigger. Her senses have expanded, she's taking in the flood of them. What's in front of her is hazy, distorted, like tunnel vision but not.

"When... when did you all get so small?" Cryo's voice is much deeper and resonant, to match her size. A rumble to them that vibrates in the chest. The tones and quirks of her expression are there, but so much larger. Her head jolts up, a familiar movement of shock, the sound of herself surprising even her.

"I'm a dragon?" She murmurs, a note of panic as she tells Seldan, Serene, desperately quick, "I'm not evil!"

The ritual is still in progress. She has to continue, help more. There is a surge of power working its way through her.

She's a conduit of the energy, coursing through her body. She is also a white dragon. The smallest, weakest, brutish, dullest and most low of all dragon kind. Yet still a dragon. A direct link to Maugrim, if even through only a single drop of blood; she is a descendant of the Dragonfather of all chromatics.

Somehow, she feels blessed. No, no, no, I'm not an evil dragon. Cryo resists the thought, then remembers. She is a Speaker. She is a performer. She says what needs to be said.

Half dazed, stunned, she says, "Presenting... Cryosanthia in the role of a lifetime... Maugrim the Tyrant Dragon!"

She inhales. Her chest filling with power. What would he say? Her eyes fix on the void beast. Of course.

Maugrim ROARS, "DIE!"

Steadfast. If there is one thing that Serene believes has been at the core of her entire life, it's that. Steadast in purpose. Steadfast in defiance. Steadfast... Okay. Where did that dragon come from? Braced as she is to contain the power that flows through her, to keep control of that while keeping control of her own mind, she keeps herself steady as the altered Cryosanthia suddenly looms. If ever there were a moment of faith, this is it... for if the enemy was bringing dragon's to the fight, it was probably over. So a corner of her mind tracks the white draconian while the rest remains focused on the task at hand. And the relief that floods her when the white dragon identifies herself is almost euphoric. "Keep on it!" she yells into the violence of the abomination's thrashings, shrugging off the energies that lash at her. "This is your moment! Right now, we are the shield for everything we hold dear! Stand fast, Gaea's champions!"

The Sea of Mana swirls around you, becoming like a tidal wave of power that washes over you. The power threatens to consume all of you, in fact, because that is the nature of power uncontrolled like this. Like fire in your veins, eating you from the inside out. All of you can feel it, but it's most keen in those actively making the rite. It's threatening to eat them alive.

A soothing presence can be felt. Perhaps a gift from the Gods, or more likely, a (possibly temporary) parting gift of Merek. It's him, you can sense *that* much, and his lingering presence here in the Sea offers some help to hold things together a little longer.

Power circles around the moon above and then a beam of moonlight directly falls upon the great tower of the unraveller and it burns, erupting in silver flame as it lashes out and strikes Serene, first, and attempts to do the same to the others less effectively. Serene doesn't disintegrate, at least, so that's good. The razor-wires that slew Merek erupt in silver flame that tracks back to it, burning more of it away as it begins to crumble.

It's vulnerable now. Strike it. You know. You just know.

Just when Aya was rather bewildered and at a loss on an appropriate action in this rather novel situation, she suddenly KNOWS. She doesn't question the how or why of that knowledge. It isn't trust in the divine, however, that fuels her as she strikes. And strikes. And strikes. She has cause enough without true faith to fuel each and every...

Karelin looks up, up, at the moon, and the crumbling tentacles -- and the transforming dragon above and behind him. "YES DRAGON!!" he roars, fist in the air. "WITNESS!!"

Eyes brightened, he pulls out his broken runeblade, and charges headlong at the Great Beast, plunging his weapon up into it, up to the crossguard. The weapon's edge may be cratered, but the runes still put out a pure light that burns as it penetrates -- like Holy Gonorrhea, only more heroic and with less regret.

Cesran knows that the time to strike is now and he brings forth his most powerful evocation spell. He holds his staff with one hand as he continues with the ritual, but with his other he starts to cast a spell. Fire flares from Ral-sara's eyes and her voice is heard, "Yes! I love this part." Four sphere fly from her mouth as Cesran has carefully aimed not to hit his companions. The sphere expand into 2 foot diameter sphere that crash against the Void Beast. As it sphere hits it detonates into an explosion as big at a fireball doing massive damage all over the beast.

Then Karelin charges, Aya flashes to the beast. Cesran's rays consume it in fire. Cryo is struck by the thought, one she never conceived she would have.

What Would Maugrim Do?

Cryo throws herself into the role.

With a roar the white dragon leaps off the rock, a great downwash of air from her wings as she dives towards the creature.

Maugrim would bite, Maugrim would rend, Maugrim would tear, and Maugrim would tailslap the living hell out of the Great Beast and send it into next Tuesday.

Maugrim will do that when he gets there, but this body is slow, flies clumsily, is still feeling itself out.

So his arrival is preceded by a great cone of cold, a torrent of snow and ice shards, freezing over the fire. The howl of a snowstorm, an anger unbridled, "DIEEEEEEEEE!"

Serene feels the call like everyone else.. if she hesitates, it's not out of a lack of conviction or a sense of doubt. It's the tactician waiting for her moment. It's the warrior steeling her resolve. Discord finds its way to her other hand, and then, moments, barely even seconds after her allies have charged in, unleashing the very hopes of their living world upon the creature in an act of very violent protest against its existence, Serene is following suit... first running, then the summoned wings upon her back beating down in a powerful thrust to propel her straight at the Eater of Worlds. The holy sword Promise is drawn in her other hand, then, and she thrusts them both forward.

Dark and light energies dance between the two, an unwillingness to share the same space... the dark sword Discord screaming in the paladin's mind to unleash it, to drop the dragonier-forged holy weapon and give herself over to it... the holy avenger, non-sentient perhaps, but driven by pure purpose to end everything Discord seems to stand for. Two opposing forces, repelling each other. But that repulsion is overwhelmed by the flood of mana and divine energies coursing through Serene as she calls upon more than perhaps even she can contain. Until she appears as nothing more than a sharp spear of light, lancing into the heart of the beast.
