Good news, folks! It's time to deliver a package to a workshop on the edge of ALexandrian territory! That's why so many adventures have been hired. Hired to make sure the package of expensive safety equipment is delivered and makes it there.

Safely.

You and your steeds, whatever they might be, are moseying along and have been for a solid day, with most of another day of travel ahead of you.

The package to be delivered are several containers in the wagon one of you is piloting.

It's all fun so far.

Being that a horse is unlikely to be willing to be ridden by a sith-makar, and that riding one would have been difficult for Zeke on the best of days, the sith-makar is riding in the back of the wagon. It seems wise in any case to have someone in the back should something go wrong so the sith has been riding back there silently. He's a blue-scaled sith, with six long horns arcing over his skull now that they can be seen. The wind from the wagon pushed back his cloak's hood some time ago and he hasn't moved it back. The cleric carries a staff in one hand, held carefully and his cloak covers the rest of his body with equal care. He has as of yet met no one's eyes directly, nor spoken more than the briefest and politest 'Peasce on your nessst' at the beginning.

Victor sits in the driver's space in the wagon. Although saying that he 'pilots' it might be too generous. he mainly just holds the reins and the oxen pulling seems to plod along in the same direction as the rest of the party.

Merek is on the wagon with his usual armor on, as well as his firearm which he has with him, the shotgun-like ray that he uses. He isn't talking a lot, it looks like a mostly normal traveling adventure.

A tricorn hat shields a red-headed dwarf's face from the sun, his head slowly swiveling from side to side to watch for ambush. It is what he would do after all. Bhavrad reaches down and pats his mount roughly on the neck, his fat fingers disappearing into the poofy fur of the dire llama. Caurak, the llama, casts an eye back at the dwarf and rolls his lips. Pondering whether to spit in response.

The dwarf sits back and draws his dragonspitter, double checking the flint and hammer for the umpteenth time. "Lo, lo, down da long road!" He sings in a rough gravely tenor. Well. Not so much singing, but saying very loudly. But he says it well. "We idle n' drink, for we has no home!"

Victor eventually realizes what Bhavrad is doing. Following his lead Victor also begins looking around.

"Ain't you a dour lot?" The dwarf says. He had already been talking people's ears off for most of the day, thus the likely quiet. "Tis bad when me ol' ugly orc-face gives me more conversating." With a flip of his half cape, he reveals more colorful outfit. If a dwarf could be one of the traveling folk, Bhavrad would be it.

The llama glares at Bahvrad, and spits a wet thick loogie into the dirt. "My thoughts 'xactly, Caurak. At least da mul-woman is a looker. What about you scale-face? What's gotten one you scaley blighters this far out from the jungle?"

This is not exactly on the roads. Oh, sure, there are trails and paths worn into the foothills and forests, sure, and following them to your destination is not terribly hard, but it still takes some doing to maintain a proper sense of orientation on your way. The map helps and you're able ot identify and note landmarks as you go.

Eventually, the noon day sun gives way to evening, adn you're fairly sure you're drawing close to your destination.

Just another few hours, given this rate, and you should be to that mark on the map that indicates the village of Torhold.

Seems to be a Khazadi settlement. Assuming you want to travel with the growing twilight, anyway.

Victor turns his attention on the pack animals pulling the wagon. He watches where they place their feet and how they seem to be otherwise handling the decreasing light. "Our oxen do not appear to have lowlight vision," he notes.

Bhavrad turns his head to the golem on the cart. "Hmm..." He ponders Victor's words. "Dis big ball of poof does," he pats Caurak on the neck. "He can guide dem, but will the follow?" Plucking a stray hair from his beard, he flicks the bright red strand onto the ground. "So we're camping, eh? Can't say I like it wid'out a proper caravan cart, but." The dwarf shrugs, and swings a boot over and off his saddle. "If'en you pull dem over, I can care for da ox, if'en somone else cooks dinner?"

"Thisss one thinkss... that though our desstination iss closse, we sshould sstop for the evening." The blue scaled sith-makar looks at his companions. Not meeting anyone's gaze, but watching them subtly. "It will be dangerousss to do ssso ass well, sso thisss one would undersstand if you do not wissh to sstop."

Pull the oxen over? Possible in theory, Victor know. After a few failed attempts he manages to guide them to the area indicated. It's much easier for him to find and apply the brake, and then he climbs down from the wagon to stand next to the Oxen, examining their harness. He tries to memorize how they are strapped in, so that he can retie them later if needed.

Pulling a sweet treat from a saddle bag, Bhavrad tosses it to his long-necked mount. "Ye stay der," he demands at the llama. Caurak spits in return. "Be nice ye blasted fur-ball." With a few extra treats in hand he waddles over to Victor and the oxen. His wide hand swats the golem in the back. Leg. The place in-between? Who knows on a tin man? "Scaley is right. We should stop. 'N don't ye worry big guy. I'll teach ye da ropes. Don't let em out until we got a spot for dem to stay. But give em dees." He holds the treats out to Victor. "Lets 'em know dey did good."

Taking some time to pack up and make camp isn't too onerous a project at this point. You've had a day of practice and the wagon team is thankful for the rest.

Thus, you rest. Camp. Take turns guarding. Night falls.

Night falls big time. It gets super dark out here.

And then there's a sound, none too far away, like a muffled screech and then something falling through the trees with a tremendous clanking of metal.

Victor climbs to his feet and looks in the direction of the sound. He can see reasonably well in the darkness - only the range of his vision is somewhat limited. He'll likely have to get closer. He begins chanting the words of a spell as he moves.

GAME: Victor casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 4 DC: 16

Lollia grumbles where there's a mop of blonde hair above a bedroll and a faint grunt that might be something about 'not my turn zzzzzz' as she stirs a bit, before rolling over at the crash and sits up, blinking slightly. "...who dropped the sack of hammers?" she says blearily.

Zeke sits up at the sound of the noise, green eyes looking for the source. His heartbeat rises and he also does so, climbing slowly to his feet with care. "Thisss one doess not think it wass hammerss." Clearly not, but he has no idea what it /is/. He picks up his quarterstaff, but stays where he is by the wagon that they're here to protect. It wouldn't do for them all to wander off while someone stole what they were sent to protect.

Merek had taken his time to pull out a bedroll, but once he is asleep, he hears as the sound awakens him. He makes a light little sound, while he takes a moment to prepare one of his devices, while he stands up to look about a bit.

Bhavrad makes to the oxen, his head cocked as he listens to see if there is another screech and clang. He doesn't do it yet, but he preps to remove their hobbles. "Some kind of animal! Call oiut iffen its dangerous." He pulls his knitted nightcap off, and pulls out his dragonspitter and dwarven stiletto. "I'll guard da animals."

Bennet is the quiet sort. So quiet you might have missed he was here all along. But he's here, and heading along with the other to check out the... whatever that was.

"It's all right!" Victor's voice is raised just loud enough so those back at the campsite can hear it. "It's a warrior. She is injured. We're bringing her back." He takes hold of the woman under her arms.

In spite of the call of assurance Zeke stays where he is, his sharp green eyes on the lookout for anything that could have harmed the woman, or anyone who might in fact be working with her.

Truddling behind victor comes Bhavrad, his stout little legs going as quick as they can. "I always wished beautiful women would fall from the sky, but dis is not what I meant." The dwarf wipes some of the woman's blood off on his pants. "We need a healer. Would any of youse fit da bill?"

GAME: Merek casts Cure Light Wounds. Caster Level: 5 DC: 15

Bennet shrugs, and steps forward. "I work fer The Lady Death. Sumtimes she's willin ta wait a spell, iffen ya ask nice. Reckon she can wait, will see us all eventually." The aged cowpoke reaches out, his hands glowing a soft grey as he lays them upon the injured warrior.

Lollia frowns a bit as she gets to her feet, picking up her bow as she also scans the sky. 'Any sign of where or why she fell out of the sky?"

Merek assists with the people doing the healing, while he takes a device to offer to the woman also as well.

Victor turns to face the direction he brought her from. "I believe she fell through the trees. Perhaps she was on an airship." He turns and scans the skies. "If so it must have been very high. It's surprising that she survived the impact."

Serene tries to open her eyes... one refuses to obey, though the other manages to crack open to at least a slit. The limited illumination of the night doesn't allow her to see much. "Where... did I make it back?" She coughs, then groans as her body convulses... and the attempt to move her arm to cover her mouth fails and provokes a groan. And heavy breathing.

...there's a rustling in the trees. A sense that 'something' is out there. And that's when it happens.

Small, pallid beings sloughing their way forward, flesh melting off them like wax on a candle, hanging from twisted, charred and blackened bone that never seems to quite break, held together with embers of green flame.

There's perhaps a dozen of them, and they seem to be rolling towards your camp...

Lollia curses under her breath and starts casting a spell, a shimmering suit of near invisible armor flickering into existence around her. 'They're in the trees!" she shouts.

"What ho! I knew this couldn' be boring forever!" Bhavrad points to the others. "Stick together, watch ye backs," the finger swings at Caurak. "Ye fleabag guard the oxen!" Caurack just glares back, but obeys. With a laugh and a yelp, Bhavrad truddles forward, and his tricorn spirals in the air towards the llama. "Watch me hat!" From under the hat he has pulled what can only be described as a dwarven rapier. Long. Skinny. But shorter and stouter than anyone else might use.

Bennet sighs, and draws his ThunderBelcher, raising the grey weapon up to his eyes, and drawing a bead.

"Ears."

It's not much of a warning, but it's something. Alchemic thunder rolls, and a lead pellet races out, blowing a small hole in one of the... whatever they are. Bennet frowns mildly, glancing over the weapon before shrugging, and resuming his aim.

Merek lifts up his weapon to take a shot, but it isn't too effective. He then looks to the others also, as he takes a moment to think about what to do also.

Victor steps back away from the creature. He casts a spell and then raises clenched fists, ready to brawl.

"What is.." The sounds of battle alert the mostly blind and battered warrior... her nostrils flair, then, as though picking up a scent. "No... did they follow?" Another groan is ripped from Serene's throat, but she pushes through it, rolling to her front and her knees. And then she forces herself to her feet while cradling her likely broken arm to her dented and notched breastplate. It takes her a moment to steady herself.. and then she starts glowing. It starts at the fist of her broken arm, and then spreads outwards, a spherical ball of silvered light. But it barely grows larger than Serene before it suddenly /snaps/ back in on her and she screams, collapsing back to the ground.

The creatures drop to all fours, running on their hands and feet. Their bones on their arms, visible in spaces, don't look like they should support that weight, but they do, leaving smouldering green handprints in their wake, bits of flesh growing and tearing free as they rush towards you.

Some of them engage, wounding Merek with a swift strike of their hand, a touch that burns and scalds flesh through armor, strips of molten and waxy, melty flesh left on their armor. Victor and Zeke, too, are struck similarly. Three others are now rushing towards their target: the silver haired woman you've rescued who seems completely unable to defend herself at the moment.

Lollia sees the creeping things lunging forward, backing up, before she screams. She's got a great set of lungs! And she is the token pretty blonde girl, so it's kind of her job. In this case, however, the scream starts to dopple out of audibility as she makes a few quick gestures, focusing the sound completely on one of the grotesque creatures coming towards her.

Bhavrad's eyes go wide when the things get closer and he sees them falling apart. "Oh great holy..." He does not finish his swear as he blades darts out. Aaaaaand, he trips over a rock. Falling backwards, his stab completely misses. Like sturdy boulder he rolls, and opportunely pops up standing above Serene's fallen frame. "Ack! I... Totally meant to do that!" A loud 'Graoooonk' sounds from Caurack. "Shut your face fluffbag! I did too!" He stands ready to defend the fallen woman and hope he looks better than he felt.

Alchemic thunder continues to roll as Bennet fires again and again, his finger reloading in the blur. It's not that his efforts have no effect... they just don't seem to be as effective as he might like. "What are these things? Some sorta construct?"

Merek takes another clean shot, but it doesn't look like he's doing a lot to make any usefulness of himself for the moment also.

Serene hasn't even the strength to curl into a protective ball at this point. She just lays there, barely conscious at Bhavrad's feet.... her mental state possibly not even qualifying for that. Dark lines in the form of veins seem to grow up her neck and around her jaw, under her skin. Whatever's wrong with her, trying to use her power seems to have made it worse.

Victor smashes a fist into the slough he is fighting. He glances around after the blow. "There are enough to overwhelm us," he notes. "But they are more focused on her."

Zeke moves over to Serene, concern clear on his face. "Thisss one will aid you, may thisss one lay a hand on your sshoulder?" He waits a breath for permission, for a slight nod, a word. Only then does he touch her, the divine energy pouring from him and into her.

The well-dressed elven blonde skips back from the oncoming creatures, taking cover behind the front line of more martially-inclined part members like a good little glass cannon! A second scream tears from her lips as she focuses it again on the same critter, trying to keep it off balance and do more damage.

Stepping around the fallen woman requires a bit more agility than a dwarf can muster. But Bhavrad tries, his leather boots skipping about, sending his purple half-cape a flutter as he swings his blade ineffectually. "Giant piss! Damnit Caurak, get your poofy butt over here and help us out!"

Caurak stares for a split second, chewing his cud. Pondering letting the weird smelly things eat his rider. It could be fun to be a single free llama. Hanging out with llama bachelorettes. But then one would have to find their own food. With a huff the dire llama rears up and charges one of the creatures. No way in heck was he going to fend for himself.

Bennet frowns, pauses a moment as he focuses upon one of the.... things. With a small shrug, the Absolution raises his rifle again, putting a small hole in it's shoulder. "I mean it. What is tarnation are these things? They're evil, but don't think they're undead."

Merek lifts up his weapon, and takes a clean shot which manages to kill a slough, "Well, we know they can be beat," he says, with a nod to some of the others also.

These creatures seem eager, though they've been stalled in their efforts to get to Serene. Howling moans escape their blackened lips as their flesh alternately droops and regrows over their bodies. They swing, delivering claw strikes that leave fingernails embedded in armor, but they swiftly grow new ones all the same.

Those near Serene howl in rage, blocked by the divine magics put in place. Still, wounds have been delivered, and they seem to be fairly resilient themselves.

Victor punches another to the ground. He turns to survey the campsite. "This may take some time," he notes. "Is everyone still ok to continue?"

Bhavrad has been reduced to a living shield. Standing over Serene, he simply swipes left and right, as if the motions would keep the creatures away. Little did he know it was actually a spell. Caurak on the other hand decimates one with his llama-y biting. Full of hate and discontent the ornery creature looks for its next target.

Bennet fires and reloads, fires and reloads, knocking down two of the... things. Need a good name for them... Wax Burns? Eh. "I'm okay. Looks like we're finally breaking 'em down."

Merek takes another clean shot that does little.

Their numbers have been at least a little thinned now, accumulated harm doing much to slow them down, while there's still a good number of them on their feet coming for you, and by extension, for the paladin your mission has been interrupted to protect.

It is fortunate you were here, after all.

Still, the sloughs seem to be... weakening a little.

Infuriated by their inability to attack Serene, two of them are now on either side of him! They're trying to pierce his scaly hide to absolutely zero effect. Seems to be a lot of that going around!

Lollia is, really, an opportunist here. She knows she's not a combat mage, exactly. But she's perfectly willing to snap off a shot to try and finished off a weakened opponent. Which she totally does with another scream on the one being beaten on by Zeke.

Victor glances around. With no enemies in his immediate vicinity he has room to cast another spell. A fiery bolt streaks across the air and blasts through a slough.

Swiftly, Bhavrad and his Power Camel bite into another with teeth and blade. It's nasty to watch one of these be bitten, the way the flesh explodes in its mouth, but the creature soon collapses and melts into the soil, leaving a black stain there.

Bennet isn't really hurt, but he is getting tired. The Absolution’s eyes flash with grey light, and there is the beating of mighty wings as thunder rolls, ripping holes though the Sloughs.

Zeke has never been terribly good with weapons, but there is need, and that need propels him to action to protect the woman whom is being attacked by these strange creatures. He does his best, but he misses more often than not. Nonetheless the blue-scaled sith continues on.

Only two remain after the sudden flurry of violence laid the others low.

Both of them are on Zeke, at this point, and they're doing their level best to bring him low.

Lollia seems to have screamed herself out for the moment. Girl has to take a breath sometime! Instead, she points, snapping off a few quick phrases as a ball of shimmering green goo shoots out of her hand, aimed at one of the wounded critters and hissing loudly as it hits its skin. Not that it's a very big ball. It's kind of puny really. But ooooh it stiiiiiings!

Victor spins and thrusts out his other hand, sending another fiery blast. It burns through another creature. "I believe the odds are changing in our favor."

Bhavrad and his llama move over and tear into another. It's similarly disgusting, though the last one is torn to pieces by him and his llama, again melting into the earth.

There's only one left, and Zeke takes a breath of the creatures scent as he steps in and whacks it hard on the head to keep it from attacking the woman who had been felled. It falls down with a soft thud and that's all there is. There's no a single one left standing now. He breathes heavy, green eyes falling to the woman now that there's nothing around to attack them. "We must get her to ssafety. All of usss ssshould go in cassse there are more of thesse thingss nearby."

You're near enough to the village that pressing on is an option, especially since remaining here may well be dangerous at this point.

Bennet nods in agreement, keeping his rifle handy. "We got a sec, she up fer telling us what the heck is goin on?"

"I am /totally/ okay with continuing on into the village where hopefully more strange women in armor don't come plummeting down from the sky and creepy little monkey things won't be trying to eat our faces the rest of the night." Lollia says fervently. "Besides, I need some memorization time..."

Victor opens and closes his fists. He turns his hands over and looks at the back, as they slowly change from stone back to...whatever his hands were made of before. Then he looks up and nods. "It does seem too dangerous to spend more time here."

...eventually, you're able to make it to the village, though the Khazadi are a bit surprised to see you. There, they welcome you in and take you to the artificer, who seems to be working on some kind suits for deep-underground exploration with regards to platinum veins he's located.

...but that's another adventure.
