Tenebrae - Sunday, July 06, 2014, 6:54 PM

The job listing didn't say much. Equipment testing, protection needed, and a time. A small room has been set aside in the Guild for your gathering. A small posting by the door confirms it to be the correct room, but only a few wooden chairs are present. And of course whatever fellow adventurers have arrievd.

You had him at 'equipment testing', of course the goblin artificer is curious. Can he use the device, can he steal one? So many possibilities. Klythos is there at the guild for the meeting, ready to see what this test is all about.

Verna is curious of tests, even if the posted role is only sercurity. She would be able to observe first-hand, if nothing else. She enters and locates an available seat. Both tasks are quite simple given the lack of a crowd.

Sometimes what's needed is muscle; sometimes, it's someone who can disarm an experiment gone wrong. In either case, Oates is here, leaning back in one of the wooden chairs.

Tatyannah is curious, mostly because opportunities to steal: HELLO. Well, and as always, gold.

A few minutes after the meeting is ment to begin, a low level officer of the Guild arrives, taking a moment to identify everyone and confirm their regestration and good standing with the Guild. Not exactly a typical event. Once everyone is confirmed to be a proper Guild member, the group is quietly led out the back and to the docks, and into a large warehouse. You are passed over to a thin human dressed in simple grey overalls. "Thank you all for comming. Before we go any futher, I'd like to clarify that the details of todays events are not to be shared. If the details of this mission were to fall into the wrong hands, innocent lives could be lost. To stress this detail, I have here a number of non-disclosure agreements for each of you to sign. In short, by signing you agree not to speak of what you see, hear, or do on this assignment."

Klythos signs his name in goblinwriting, which is barely readable, even by goblins. After that he simply waits, patience is rewarded, the last goblin standing gets the prize, usually after the others have all blown themselves up.

Oates signs the appropriate paperwork with a bored expression. "War secrets, of course," he says with a shrug.

"Perhaps it would be most simple were we to complete a persistent document to span multiple tasks," Verna notes as she completes hers. It is not the first such document she has signed in the recent past.

Elessa has been here, and is a registered member of the guild, despite her death a couple months back. It's all been sorted out. She raises her eyebrows at the mention of the non-disclosure agreements. Really? "What about if we're drunk and in a boasting competition?" she asks sarcastically. No, the young woman will read the agreement and sign her name. She needs some action. Back on the horse after falling... or dying.

Tatyannah shrugs a little, and signs the document as well. These kind of assignments mean extra, right?

Glancing over the signed documents, the Grey Man leads to the next room. A large curtain hides much of the room, leaving on your side a white chalk line on the floor near the wall. Taking position there himself, the man says "Stand behind the white line and face the curtain. Do not cross the white line. The test will begin in a moment."

The goblin is a little confused, but does as instructed. He takes a moment, adjusting a dial or two on his armor as one of his nervous habits, even if the dial doesn't do anything...that anyone knows.

"Last readiness check, got it," Oates murmurs, making sure his gear is ready to draw, whether it be tools or weapons.

Tatyannah eyes this dubiously, but pulls herself to go plant herself behind the line, facing the curtain. She pulls out her spear, just in case someone needs to be stabbed.

Elessa heads into the room and frowns a bit, but slides herself up next to Tatyannah with a smile. "Hi," she says in her fairly usual cheerful tone. "Got any guesses what's behind the curtain?"

Verna moves into the other room with the others, though she also holds some concerns with the latest directions. "To clarify, we are expected to assist in this test in a security fashion, not as subjects or recipients, correct?" She expected that the test would occur at some distant location, not immediately as implied.

The wait is only a moment. The curtain is yanked aside. On the floor beyond, a number of faintly glowing gems have been set into the floor. Just beyond, the floor is marked with gouges and scorch marks. And beyond that.... archers, wizards, and even a small ballista. There's hardly time to react before they all fire at you.

The gems set into the floor flash, and the air above them shimmers for a moment. the assorted spells, arrows, and other projectiles are halted, disolved, or otherwise rendered innert. None even come close.

The Grey Man barely reacts. "Test successful. This way please." He heads though a second door. "Remember not to cross the white line." Meaning don't disturb the gems. All this is, of course, very unusual.

The goblin flinches when the weapons are fired, but then frowns as they are stopped, he shrugs and moves along to the next testing area. "Funny test." He says as he moves, finding his spot in line and waiting again.

Tatyannah narrows her eyes at the Grey Man, and he's on her List. She says nothing, but just follows through the second door. Though the jewels are given one last, forlorn look.Oates goes into a defensive stance, which relaxes as the gems do their thing. Part of him is curious as to how the gems were enchanted, but the rest of him is fine with this being on a need-to-know basis -- and currently, he doesn't need to know.

Elessa does flinch, drawing her rapier, ready to dodge. But it doesn't hit... Weird... She starts to go up to the line of gems to examine them but pulls back when reminded about not crossing it. Frowning though, she turns and follows with the others.

The Grey Man leads into another simple room, taking a seat on the only chair. Your non-disclosure agreements are held in his lap, a subtle reminder. "Offically, the test is complete. You are free to leave. The Guild will be informed of your coperation. There is nothing more to do. Offically." He nods to a clearly marked Exit door, and arches a brow, supressing a smile. Layers upon layers.

Klythos frowns, looking around at the others, he will take his cue from everyone else here, since he definatly thinks something is wrong with the setup so far, and no ones going to pay just for that.

Oates pauses. "And unofficially?" he asks, not looking at the Grey Man.

"Live test. A /real/ live test," Tatyannah tells the rest of them. "You better pay really good money for this."

That certainly answered Verna's query. She is startled by the action, though not especially surprised by the result. It would be rather wateful to utilize guild members as targets. Not to mention unlikely to be authorized by the killed.

By the same token, the man's implied conclusion is highly suspect. "We are neither foolish nor unintelligent," Verna notes, before adding, "as a majority. If you desire cooperation, you should offer it in kind."

Elessa gives a nod to Oates's question. "Yeah, unofficially?"

The man in the grey overalls stands, giving his chair a sharp 90 degree turn. A section of the wall slides open. Someone is having far too much fun with this cloak and dagger stuff. "Unoffically, you'll be accompanying Team 2 to our base site in the field. From there, you'll accompany the test group behind enemy lines. Team 1 will set up and activate the device. Team 2 will monitor and record the results. Teams 3 and 4 will handel your extraction and return. You are Team 5, and will protect the first our teams from enemy forces while they do their part." A number of wizardly looking guys are in the room beyond, fussing around several pieces of equipment. High end magical detectors and recorders, if one were to guess. "Please remove any pins, insignia, or other marks which might tie you to Alexandros. We don't expect any witnesses, but best not to take chances. You can leave them on the talbe over there, and pick them up after."

Tatyannah has nothing to remove. It's the thief thing. She does ask as she eyes the wizards, "This isn't one of those kill innocent people kind of things, is it. Secret government stuff used against people who can't pro- oh Tarien," she looks ill, "Is this awful feeling in my stomach what being legit feels like?" Then, "Make it stop."

Elessa gives a nod to Tatyannah, "I think that what it feels like." She takes a moment took at herself and finds nothing that really would signify her as part of Alexandros or the area. In fact, her attire would place her closer to the Vast than Alexandros. That's just something she never picked up. But she sounds like she's in.

Oates does a quick once-over of his gear and garb, just to make sure there's no insignia or the like. "So a bit of guard duty in hostile territory," he muses, then shrugs. "Beats making trap components."

Verna bears no identifying insignia, aside from that of her faith. As it is not ties to Alexandros or Alexandria, she retains it. "If they are undertaking any illicit or inhumane activities, they will be judged for their deeds," she assures Tatyanna.

Klythos has nothing but his armor, but its not marked with anything honestly, his own mark maybe, Reos on a healing contraption, but thats its. He is ready to go, standing and waiting.

One of the wizardly type, a bit too tall to be a gnome, but having the nose for it, steps over in your direction. "Oh, hey, glad you're here. We'll teleport to the base camp in a few minutes, we're almost ready. From there we'll cross the border into Dragonier. Once everyone is ready, Team1 will set off the device, we'll record the effects, and we'll all head back. Hopefully we won't have any trouble, but if the undead are as thick as rumors suggest, might be a fight for you. We'll do what we can, but, well, we sorta need to focus on our stuff. It's a little... fragile."

The goblin artificer just nods, then starts adjusting dials on his death ray. Perhaps setting it to undead, or, well whatever it is artificers do with thier stuff.

Oates draws his rapier and stretches out. "I don't suppose there's any word about the most common undead in the area?" he asks, his tone of voice suggesting that he's expecting the answer to be no.

The goblin artificer just nods, then starts adjusting dials on his death ray. Perhaps setting it to undead, or, well whatever it is artificers do with thier stuff. (repose)

Tatyannah bites off a swear in Jotun. Of /course/ it'd be Dragonier. She presses her lips flat and she is cranky. Man, she /really/ hates Dragonier.

Elessa frowns. "Going to Dragonier? Lovely..." she sighed. Oh well, might as well go and help.

Verna does not dislike Dragonier, per se. She simply holds a vehement dislike of and duty to release the trapped souls which occupy the land in great hordes. She frowns, though the expression is likely unnoticed by most.

"Wights. I mean, the majority of the population turned to wights, so I'd guess that's what will be common. Anyway, if you're all ready?" The teleportaion takes place soon after, a rather smooth trip so far as such things go, though you get the distinct impression this is more for the delicate equipment than for your personal comfort.

The base camp is little more than a flat grassy spot in some hills, with a second group of wizardly types gathered around a tall pillar looking thing wrapped in cloth, a pair standing slightly off to the side, and a small group of Navor clerics keep to themselves. A few of thsoe gathered jump a little at your arrival, but calm soon enough. A faint shimmer rings the camp, suggesting a bit of magical protection to prevent detection.

Tatyannah appears a little ill, not like she would have been, say on a ship or anything. Still, she goes to find some spot away from the group so she can start keeping watch.

Klythos looks around for a moment, trying to get his bearings. He adjusts a few dials on his armor, maybe its got internal AC or something. The goblin is still quiet, observing all the activities around.

Verna has become more and more accustomed to teleportation as of late. She hesitates only briefly on the far side before she resumes her steps. "If the wards conceal and/or protect this camp from the undead, we should be quite secure while within its confines." Of course, she expects that the must leave that security for the test.

Elessa handles the teleportation pretty well, she's been a few of these before and looks to Tatyannah. "You okay? Look like you do when on an airship..." Maybe worse... But she looks around, trying to figure out where they are supposed to go...

Oates looks around, getting a sense of the terrain. Nothing too unusual, really; no glaring defensive weak points, but also a certain lack of strong points, too. "Hope it goes smoothly, but be ready to fight?" he asks the other adventurers.

"No, not as bad as an airship," Tatyannah tells Elessa. She gestures, "You take that side, I'll take this one." She points to the other side. "Just keep an eye out for anything. I'm not sure I trust these guys to have set this up correctly."

The tech-heads confirm for a moment, before a chubby half-elf comes your way, offering a brief hello before details. "We'll all get set up, then teleport across the border to a clearing we scouted earlier. There's undead in the area, but doesn't seem too thick. We hope to have some around to witness the effects of the Device, but not so many as to cause real problems. It'll take a few minutes once we get there for Teams 1 and 2 to get all their stuff operational."

Elessa gives a nod to Tatyannah in that she is okay, but then moves over to help with the scouting and making sure that the group is going to be safe while in such a dangerous area.

Oates helps with keeping watch, nodding to the half-elf that explained the plan.

Klythos just kind of hangs around, he isn't too familiar with anyone here, so he pretty much just waits to go shoot some undead.

The teleportation is less smooth this time, but not badly so. The thin woods around you are expectly dark and shadowy, the thin leaves filtering the sunset off to the west. Wights fill the clearing, susprised at your sudden arrival. To the northeast, a trio of the undead clank and clatter in heavy armor, the sad results of a warrior force. To the south west, a pair of massive figures lumber, towering well over 10 feet, despite their slumped and hunchbacked postures. The wizards murmur a moment to themselves, but quickly focus upon their resepctive tasks, trusting you to deal with the monsters while they do their job.

Being surrounded by soul-draining undead warriors of various size and accoutrement is a sobering prospect. Which works in Hassan's favor because he showed up drunk. Which is probably why he was loosened up enough to roll with the disorientation associated with teleportation. When the wights lumber out of the clearing, the swarthy magi produces a small stone tablet from his satchel and intones the inscription, causing it to crumble into dust. The effect is immediate and widespread. Pebbles, clods of dirt, and stones begin to rain down on western front, doing little damage to the abominations but does make a nice job of slowing them down a bit.

Hassan does not like the look of the pair closing in on him. In fact, he doesn't like the look of any of them, but still. Weaving a spell of his own, Hassan conjures a massive sphere of water around the undead directly in front of him. It doesn't drown, but it is swept away to pair up with the one on his right, catching it as well, along with the conjured dirt and stone, creating a muddy slurry.

Elessa gives an approving nod to Tatyannah as she takes down the one Wight, and since another is just RIGHT THERE, she goes after it. With the spell laid on her by Verna, she is quick on her feet, and her sword can hardly be seen. Her first strike lands, and hard as she guts the Wight. But then she keeps moving and a second then a third hit each land on it, causing it to fall, once again dead, at her feet.

GAME: Mikilos advances the initiative order.

Verna notes the large wights closing on the southwestern flank. The northern was cleared, but that now leaves Klythos and the technicians vulnerable. Since she is not foolish enough to charge into the oversized undead, Verna instead summons a proxy hand of force to her side.

Hassan finishes his conjuration, bringing up a creature of granite and soil that goes all Three Stooges (Minus a Stooge) with a double slap across the wight's now mangled flesh. The one remaining standing is brought down with a volley of magical darts from the hands of Hassan. "This is not an endorsement of evocations!"

A brief cheer goes up from the wizards as the last wight falls. Well, the last one not wishing they could swim. Unfortunately, this cheer is swiftly followed by a howl from the woods, and a crash of branches from the other direction. You may have a moment of respite, but you can trust it will only be a moment.

The goblin artificer grumbles a bit, activating a small spider like thing that crawls over his body. It bites at the wound he recieved, injecting some numbing solution to ease the pain. Then he looks around towards the sounds of the disturbance, getting his death ray at the ready.

Elessa takes a deep breath as the last wight falls, looking to Tatyannah with a smile. However, the smile only gets bigger as she haers more of them coming. "Seems like there are more of them kill. Shall we?" she asks, just a little too eagerly perhaps.

Oates moves back to where he had started the fight, now with his bow at the ready. Whatever monster or the like that comes from the southeast, he'll pepper them with arrows before they close.

<OOC> Mikilos says, "Okay, for my sanity, 3 rounds pass before more monsters show up. You've all time to move and heal and whatever, but not a whole lot."

Tatyannah asides to Elessa, "You worry me. This is what happens with wights, you kill them and more show up."

Hassan's thin nose wrinkles at the prospect of more combat. "Ugh, these creatures are horrid. Can't we just burn this whole country to the ground?" He grumbles to himself as he prepares several spells in succession. First, a bit of mobility with a spell of flight for himself, then the rapier wielding oaf gets a bad touch with a good result with a spell of strength, then finally with a bit of gum arabic and an eyelash plucked from Oates head, the wizard fades into invisiblity. The earth elemental lumbers to the northeast, sinking down into the dirt.

Elessa turns as she sees a horrific, undead bear show up. "Over here!" she calls and runs, extremely quickly, over to it. The southern Wight glares at Klythos, and moans something unintelligable. For a moment, ti's hands glow with pale green energy, and shattered ribs, lost femurs, and assorted bit of bone rise from the damp ground to hover before the undead caster, forming a sort of protective shield.

The final wight, apaprently not a magic user, hurries towards Oates, ignoreing the plight of its pincoushioned brother. (no actual relation)

It's enough to take it all down and she smiles. "That's three!" True, the bigger ones still count as one. She takes a quick moment to look about to see where they need help.

Jerking a hand toward his undead arcane counterpart, Hassan sends the mound of earth and stone to smash into the creature, which it does as it rolls forth rapidly like a wave through water. He uses his other hand to brush the pearl earring that dangles from his right lobe, recapturing the spent arcane energy that fell one of the giant wights and refocusing it toward the ethereal shadow, each of the four darts slamming into it.

Weakened and shakey, Verna falls back amoung the other casterly sorts for the moment. The pinCoushion Wight steps up, swipeing ineffectually at Oates.

The earth elemental seems a bit off put from the wight's bad touch and telegraphs its downward slam of it's rocky fists too much, allowing the wight to sidestep easily, only to get popped in the shoulder by Hassan's corrosive arrow. It doesn't drop the arcane abomination yet, but the acid is slowly eating away at it's flesh.

GAME: Klythos rolls ranged+1-4: (16)+7+1+-4: 20

GAME: Klythos rolls 3d6+5: (8)+5: 13

Klythos finally finishes fixing his death ray, then turns to point at the last thing. He charges it up, this time with a blue energy and fires off a blast, actually managing to hit...and it falls down. Klythos is momentarily stunned by that fact.

Klythos has disconnected.

Hassan winces as he is slammed with some of his own medicine, holding his stomach from the two jolts of magic energy. Once Klythos freezes the thing solid, a blast of simple TK force shatters it all T2 style just for spiteful effect. "Ugh. You almost done?" He asks irritably of the technicians.

The second wave of undead fall, and a brief cheer rises from the techs. But this is Dragonier, and safety just doesn't exist. More sounds can be heard from the woods, monsters comming yet closer. Worse yet are the hints of moment in the darkness that make no sound. But then comes the cry...

"We're ready! Activate the device! Stand back!"

The brass and crystal pillar glows for a moment, shining with pale blue light, then shoots up into the air like a rocket. A few moments later, and explosion is heard... an anti-climactic moment, but the techs still seem to be faint with anticipation.

Then comes The Light. A dozen suns explode high above the treetops, shineing down in hundreds of painfully bright bursts of light. The rays don't harm flesh, so much as they seem to sear directly into the soul with unforgiving power. Distictly uncomfortable for the living, but ever so much worse for the undead. Scream of pain sound from the shadows, suddenly cut off as their source evaporates away. It's over in an instant, with only bright after images in your sight, and a few muffled moans moving swiftly away, to indicate it really happened at all.

The techs stand stunned for a moment themselves. "...well... that was.... bright." Then comes a far off roar. Something big, something powerful, something pissed off. The techs jump back into action, rapidly breaking down what remains of the equipment. Team 3 steps up, casting powerful conjurations. In moments, a hoard of elementals spring into being. Fire and air lead the way, burning a path off into the woods. Water and earth follow, smoothing the way into a wide, easy road though the wilds that even a fool could follow. And hopefully, some fool will follow, as Team 4 makes to teleport you all away while the monsters follow the red herring... A few magical hops later, and your back In Alexandros, safe and sound. Well, relitively speaking.

When she hears the roar, Tatyannah starts yelling, "Gotta go, gotta go. Must go faster, must go faster," as she tries to round people up.
