  • Title: Dying Paladin
  • Emitter: Benthus
  • Characters: Munch (Bbn4/DDs4/Sor1) Lothos (Wtc7)* Sophia (Clr9/Pal2)*
  • Place: Desolation
  • Time: Dec 25, 2014
  • Summary: A paladin of Daeus and a fellow guild member is under the possession of a very powerful entity, after he offered himself as a vessel to save the life of a fellow Daeusite. The said paladin manages to maintain a tenuous 'hold' on the powerful entity and serves as a medium for communicating with the possessor. The being is said to be a Mystic Theurge of great power and renown, but his capture, torture and and inevitable death made its spirit vengeful. The only way for the entity to 'go on' is that if the monsters responsible for its demise be destroyed. Only then will it release the paladin, and only then will it leave this plane of existence. A clue is given to the Daeusite as to the location of where the nefarious killers are located. The paladin is being held inside the temple of Daeus to prevent the vengeful entity from wrecking havoc in the city.
  • APL: 9
  • Encounter 1: 1x Vrock, CR9

Whether you are asked for a favour from the Daeusite or a contract is offered to you by the guild of explorers, you have accepted the task of locating the whereabouts of the monsters said to be responsible for the demise of a Mystic theurge. You are quickly brought to the airship yard, and a fast transport ship is commissioned for your group's use. The pilot and crew immediately set 'sail' towards the location said to be a clue as to where entity's enemies might be located.

The ship is unusually fast, and it actually teleports from point to point making the trip uncomfortable but quick. Soon, the ship heads through a barren desert that many travelers know is the great desolation. The captain of the ship has every man on board on alert as the dangers on this region is real and that an attack can happen any time.

Whatever gods there may be, the ship manages to reach the location of interest without any mishap. The passengers (you) are being dropped not too far from the site, as the area is too difficult to land in safely.

The group make their passage towards the destination on foot.

It does not take too long before the group comes upon a ruin of sort. The desert sand has covered most of it, and if it were not that you and your group are actively searching for it, you might have missed it all together. An opening/hatch can be seen in one of the platforms that make the ruin. After a bit more inspection, you realize that the platform is the roof of a big building.

It appears that the only way to get inside the submerged building is through the hatch.

Lothos sighs, looking up at the sun for a moment. "Well, inside we will be out of the heat at least..." He then shakes his head a bit vigourously, "And get the sand out of my hair." He looks to the others, "So, lets see...um, ohh yes, lets look for magic and traps and all those sorts of nasty things first, shall we?"

GAME: Lothos casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 7 DC: -85

<OOC> Lothos says, "Looking for magical stuffy trap thingies! or, anything."

Munch hrms, absently tugging upon a leathery dreadlocks upon his head, mashing the chemicals inside together to start a simple reaction. A tiny bit of heat, and a lot of glowy light. "Dead guy happen to mention what it was that actually killed him? They didn't let me get too close to listen."

GAME: Munch casts Light. Caster Level: 4 DC: 11

<OOC> Munch casts light. And rolls k/nature for monsters native to this area?

Sophia shakes her head, "Nothing beyond 'monsters'... which really doesn't narrow things down at all." She glances back and forth, looking a bit tense but not too much as she rests one hand on the hilt of her longsword.

You paged Munch with 'There are many monsters that live around this place, from giant scorpions to wind elementals, to demonic creatures that have slipped through the tear in the dimensional barrier. Your knowledge of the area tells you that demons may be of a greater chance of encounter than any other, considering that a known tear in the fabrics of time and space is somewhere nearby.'

Reaver the GreatAxe pipes up. "Demonic monsters, most likely. They always seem to hang out in this sort of place."

You paged (Lothos, Munch, Sophia) with 'You look around your area for anything out of the ordinary, and find some writings on the bricks and stones that are scattered all around the ruined area. There are no tracks that you can see going in or coming out of the hatch. The hatch appears to be closed, but the years of neglect has made the wooden door and hinges very brittle. It is likely a little prodding would be enough to break it.'

You paged Lothos with 'You spot several magical runes etched on the many bricks that comprise the roof of the building you are standing. They still glow with faint magical energy that only you can see. At first you don't seem to understand what the runes are for. But you begin to see a pattern. When magical runes are looked at from a high perspective, one can see a symbol, and the symbol is that of a lost god that once fought against the gods of light. The name of the god is Ekeshius, the sadist.'

Munch eyes the nearby stones a few moments. Covered either with writing or the strangest erosion patterned the metal man has seen, they don't offer much insight to the barbarian. "Figure I can take point, keep the squishy guy in the middle, and you can bring up the rear?" he suggests, nodding to Sophia.

Lothos frowns, looking around a bit, stepping back, then walking forward, then back. "Runes.." he points around at various things that some only he can see with detect magic. "Seems to spell out Ekeshius, an old god that fought the gods of light. The sadist.....ohh, that sounds delightful." The last is said with sarcasm.

A few dust devils can be seen spinning on the desert floor on the horizon. They vanish as quickly as they appear. The sun is immediately on top of you, indicating that it is now noon. It is very hot in the area...

Sophia nods, "Sounds like a plan... we'll need to get out of this sun, and soon." She glances at Munch and Lothos, "Let's get moving... but if this is an old temple to an old god of darkness, I have a bad feeling over what sort of monster we may be facing."

Munch nods. "I hope they're the spicy sort of demon and not the gamey sort of demon." Priorities. Munch has them. Moving over to the hatch, the barbarian jumps on top of it. A few hundred pounds of metal man should be enough to take him right though... why wait for silly things like being cautious?

GAME: Munch casts Feather Fall. Caster Level: 4 DC: 12

Munch crashes though the hatch... and yelps in surprise when there isn't a landing a short distance below. Stubby little wings flap desperately, but uselessly, far too small to be of any help... until gossimer filaments spool off from the membrane, weaving themselves into a large web of thin wings... the weight of the golem rips these delicate wings to shreds almost instantly, only for more strands to try and repair the damage. The end result means the barbarian continues to fall, but far slower than he elsewise might.

Lothos looks down, and nods, "Ok, well, you have a way yes?" He looks to Sophia, and if she confirms she is fine, he too will jump after munch. Floating slowly down, but without any fancy wings, pure raw witchy magics!

Reaver the GreatAxe, arguably the smarter of the golem duo, inquires "Okay... so how will we be getting back up?"

Sophia steps off the edge and descends slowly, no visible effect coming from her as she floats down as well. Though about halfway down, she does draw her longsword, the silvery blade glowing with azure light, the priestess glancing back and forth as she eventually lands next to the other two.

As Munch lands on the dust-covered floor, the light he has cast on himself illuminates the vast chamber he is in. There are many skulls and bones that decorate the chamber, and a sense of unease can be felt by those who enter the building. The ground looks tarry, but experience and knowledge offers a hint that this may have been blood long time ago. It would appear that the entire walls and floor is covered by it. An dark altar can be seen on the far end of the building...

Lothos looks around, needing that light created by Munch to see. "Well, at least its not a maze, and we have lots of room to maneuver when soemthing does try to kill us...cause, you know something will."

GAME: Lothos rolls perception: (3)+9: 12 GAME: Sophia rolls perception: (12)+14: 26 GAME: Munch rolls perception: (9)+17: 26

Munch huhs, keeping Reaver firmly in hand. "Usually have to look harder for the blood covered altar..."

Lothos says, "Just no clay golems I'm hoping, last evil alter had those."

Munch says, "'Try' to kill us. That's the important bit. And yeah, those things suck."

Sophia smiles faintly, "If there are, I have just the thing. Though hopefully no golems at all." She glances around, keeping her sword raised somewhat to provide more illumination.

You paged (Munch, Sophia) with 'You see two shapes on either side of the altar. It looks big with wings.'

Sophia pauses, then points her sword towards the altar, "Um, do you see what I see, fellows?" She points towards the altar, specifically the ends, "Something... big, with wings?"

Lothos squints, "Its a statue right, tell me its a statue..."

Munch blinks with a soft click, and nods towards the altar. Specifically, the large shadowy shapes to each side. "Yep. Think we've found what will be attempting to kill us."

You paged (Sophia, Munch) with 'It looks statuesque. It has not moved ever since you landed.'

Sophia hrms, "Hasn't moved yet... I would think that it would have reacted by now... particularly to me." She smiles faintly, "Still, best to be careful. No telling what sorts of things could still be lurking around here."

Lothos nods, and continues to look around, "Lets see about finding more magic." He whispers a few words, detecting magic once more.

GAME: Lothos casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 7 DC: -85

As Munch approaches the altar, he could see that the two winged figures on either side of the altar are statues. Statues of two grotesque-looking demons. They stare menacingly at anyone approaching the altar. On the altar is a glass case. There is a book inside it.

Munch peers, and shrugs... "Stone golem, maybe? OR they only react if we get close to that altar? ...or maybe they really are just statues."

Lothos peers around with slightly glowing eyes, "See its a trap, you think those statues are going to attack you, but its likely the book that's going to either suck you inside it, or eat your hand and then fly around trying to bite everyone."

You paged Lothos with 'The statues are magical. So is the altar. The glass covering the book is magically trapped, or so you think.'

Lothos points to glass, "Glass seems to have an enchantment, and statues are magical, altar magical, but the glass, definitely trapped."

Munch ehs. "Wouldn't be the first time something ate my hand. Didn't end well for the bug, wouldn't end well for the book."

Sophia blinks, "Well, that's different. It seems like a rather silly thing to intentionally trigger that trap, though." She glances over towards the other two, "Unless... do we believe these are the monsters that we're looking for? They seem a bit passive."

Munch shrugs. "Guards who watch the book, which summons the monsters? I think we should break them -before- they start to move."

Lothos nods, "Might as well, I mean, worst case scenario they just form back together and attack us, but that gives us a second or two."

Sophia hrms and sheathes her sword, "Alright." With that, she draws out her mace instead, the black metal blending with the shadows as she moves towards one of the statues, looking rather intent on smashing it.

Munch nods, and heads towards the other, ready to take out a stone kneecap. The golem remaining careful to stay well away from the altar and book.

Lothos moves back "I'll stay back a bit, just in case you know...I can heal a bit, for emergencies."

GAME: Munch rolls 1d12+10: (12)+10: 22 GAME: Sophia rolls 1d8+1: (5)+1: 6

The moment the statue is struck, it's eyes blaze red, and the stone covering begins to crumble and fall. Before the dust and debris settles a creature lunges forth and attacks Munch.

The creature behind the statue that is brought to life by the crumbling of its restraints attacks the first person it sees, Munch. It does so by using its incredible long arms to swipe at his hands and disarm him before he could even react to the threat. It stares malevolently at everyone before it unfurls its wings and begins to rise up from the ground, hovering...

Munch acks as Reaver is swiped from his hands, and scrambles after the axe. He acks again as the demon swipes at his feet, but manages to remain upright, grabbing the blade and glaring at the monster. "You! You suck!" As yes, the height of witty banter....

His feet tingle, and a shower of rainbow sparkles rise, draping his limbs in magical speed. Rubbery flesh pulls back from his fingertips, leaving gleaming mithril claws behind. Munch buzzes happily, blade whirling though images and flesh, destroying the last of the arcane images before Reaver sinks into the feathery hide, the corpse starting to dissolve away even as the metallic teeth give a piercing snap. "Ha! ...that was nasty."

Lothos shakes his head, looking around for a bit and finally putting away his rods, "Well...that was something special wasn't it. Very good work both of you, I only got the one lucky shot in there." He detects magic once more, and finds the case is no longer enchanted. "I think we can get the book now."

GAME: Lothos casts Detect Magic. Caster Level: 7 DC: -85 You paged Lothos with 'The magical trap on the glass case has been sprung. You can now retrieve the book without any further incident.'

Sophia smiles, "Always a pleasure to send one of /those/ things shrieking back to the Darkness." She nods towards Lothos, and goes over to retrieve the book, cleaning the foul ichor off her blade as she moves.

Munch nods, and spits out a stray feather. "Those aren't one of the spicy demons. They taste like bitterness and hate. Nasty. Still, glad it's not around any more."

Lothos moves over, and carefully reaches to take the book. "Ok, so, this has the answers we need to free the curse thingy.....right?"

The book talks about the god Ekeshius, and how it and its many minions waged war against the Sildanyari so very long ago. It was one of the many gods that were destroyed, or left floundering in limbo. Still, the servants of this evil god continue to operate, even though their patron is no longer there to listen to their cries. The book talks about the many rituals they have which consists of the torture of many good creatures, including the angels themselves. One particular thing of interest in the book is a location not far from the dawn elves home region. A clue as to where the remaining cultist are located maybe.

(End of plot... for now)
