  • Title: Decoy
  • Emitter: Benthus
  • Characters: Lothos lvl5, Corra lvl6, Rhar lvl7
  • Place: Rune Border Settlements
  • Time: Nov 23, 2014
  • Summary: Three adventurers are tasked to babysit a settlement close to the border of Dran.
  • APL: 6
  • Encounter 1: 1x Ettin CR6, CR6
  • Encounter 2: 3x Human Barbarian lvl4 - CR3, CR 6

You arrive on a cart to a little village called Mana Spring, a settlement outside of the capital of Rune that is found close to the border of Dran. Your companions, as well as yourself, disembark the vehicle as soon as it has come to a stop at one of the waiting stations in the village. You are currently garbed in Rune military uniform, or as close to a uniform as you could allow yourself to wear. Looking around the village, you see lots of other people in military uniform walking around the village, casually talking to villagers or just standing around at an area where they could be seen by passersby.

You set off to a location that was given to you on your debriefing of this mission. The location is a small ale brewery where your contact person is located. The person you are to look for is James Gerhardt. He will be your liaison with the Rune command and will provide you with any important information that Rune intelligence may have gathered at present.

You and your fellow companions head towards this brewery and seek this James person. As you arrive there, there are already several other people in uniform gathered. Despite their efforts to blend in, they are standing out against the rest of the inhabitants like a sore thumb. It is not just because they are wearing uniforms, but because they are forming a crowd outside the brewery. And if there is anything that arouses curiosity in any person, it is a large gathering of people.

You decide not to bother telling them to disperse as you are likely to get told off. You head inside the brewery and find James inside. He isn't too pleased on having the fake soldiers just gathering outside his supposed home. But he can't really be telling the soldiers to get out either. He looks at you and your companions and eyes your critically. "You don't look like the average man dressed up in Rune uniform and sent to parade himself in front of others. You must be the mercenaries that Rune command has been telling me they will be sending. It's about time you showed up! We got a situation in our hands." He says as he moves to close the door of his office and lock it.

"I'd be damn if this were coincidence, but the true guardians of this place is held by three mages. Those three mages have kept this place safe when the whole Dran debacle happened. Dran has stopped sending forces to raid this place long ago, even before the war began. The three wizards were just good in keeping raiders from taking this place. Now we don't only have one of the three wizards sick, but all of them. And you can bet that Dran intelligence has found out about this. We can expect something from their side any time soon. Hopefully, those fake soldiers actually know what to do."

As you and your companions head out, it appears that someone has heard of the three wizard heroes being sick. Most likely the news about village's true guardians has made the fake soldiers standing out of the brewery fearful, because they are no longer there. Perhaps they are stationed in the watch tower not too far from the village center. And so you head off in that direction. But you do not find a large group of uniformed people there. Only a young recruit who is dutifully keeping sentry on top of the watch tower.

"Private Blair Finwich, sir." Says the young recruit. "I am under orders to keep watch over this city and alert anyone of any forces moving close to our border, sir."

All of a sudden, you worst fears are realized. Something is moving through the forest that separate Dran and Mana Springs border. A two-headed giant steps forth and starts thumping its heavy club on the ground, roaring a challenge to anyone in the village.

Private Blair immediately sounds the bell, alerting the village of danger. The bell is echoed at the village's chapel, where the huge bell there is tolling for everyone to run for safety.

Lothos seems to be fairly easygoing about all of this, the task is relatively simple in that they are just to help out. Once in the tower he nods to the Private but when the motion comes from the forest he turns to look at it with a sigh. "Well, we can hope that is all we have to deal with today. Shall we go introduce ourselves to the brute?"

Rhar doesn't need a cart, she has a Gurr. Of course, she also doesn't really need a uniform, either. She has fur. Does Rune use wolflings and wolves? If so, she'd blend right in. If not, she sticks out like a sore pinky.

She knows about liquid bread, so people gathered around the brewer makes sense. But they're not supposed to be. So then they go to the tower, find the watchman. Who's watching. And then they all see the ginormous giant. So big it needs TWO heads!

When it roars, Rhar turns and howls back, joined by Gurr. "Rhar! No let you hurt pack!" She introduces herself and makes her intentions known. Because that's the polite thing to do.

Lothos speaks a few words, pulling out a bit of leather and then the leather vanishes, his body surrounded briefly by a shimmery blue glow. "Ok, well. Lets get moving shall we?"

Corra cocks her head to the side as she finally gets there and then blinks just a bit as she was heading back and then the giant. She blinks and studies it for a moment. "Well that is an ettin, careful." she says and realizes it is challenging them. She thinks for a moment and then starts to cast a spell on herself as she moves closer, her bow glowing slightly as she finishes. She doesn't get too close though, maybe about 200ft.

Corra stands on the watchtower watching the ettin for a moment and then shakes her head, "They shouldn't have sent something so big. She pulls back and looses two arrows at the ettin. As they leave her bow they seem to glow and move even faster than they did when fired. The first over shoots, the second though strikes and sinks deep into the gut of the ettin.

Lothos doesn't have to run, instead he simply jumps off the tower and starts flying through the air. As he does he pulls out a pinch of something, speaking arcane words and tossing it at the ettin. The powder streaks into it and bursts in a shower of glitter, but the creature still can see apparently.

It would appear that the giant creature is more fearful of Lothos than it is of Corran as it switches target priority. It hurls two javelins in quick successions at the flying warlock but only hits him on the second throw. One of the heads roars in jubilation.

"NO. HURT. PACK!" Rhar yells at the thing that keeps throwing sharp sticks at her pack. Spurring Gurr on, they dash across the field, where Rhar slashes and Gurr bites. The very bug Gurr locks his jaw and tugs the leg out from under the thing.

GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order.

<OOC> Lothos says, "Then I shall Misfortune him." GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+5: (8)+5: 13 <OOC> Benthus says, "Oh, well, it is Misfortuned."

Lothos zips over in the air, well up above the things reach even if it could stand. He looks down on it and points a finger, "And now, I curse you, of course, I really doubt your going to live long enough to worry about it." He starts to giggle.

GAME: NEW ROUND!

     Benthus advances the initiative order.
     Round Three - Init 24.

Corra has manages to recover a bit as she stands there on top of the watchtower and watches the Ettin. She looses one arrow and misses as the Ettin goes down, but the second arrow manages to find purchase and brings a deathcry from the creature. She glances around, "Sound off." she calls out

The ettin lies dead on the ground. It left a visible trail in its passage towards the village. Perhaps there is loot to be had in its lair?

Lothos lowers himself to the ground, and pulls a small wand out of his pack. "Yes, well, that went well." He taps himself with the wand.

<OOC> Lothos says, "CLW on myself" GAME: Lothos rolls 1d8+1: (1)+1: 2 GAME: Lothos rolls 1d8+1: (3)+1: 4 GAME: Lothos used a Wand of Cure Light Wounds. GAME: Lothos used a Wand of Cure Light Wounds. GAME: You damaged Lothos for -6 points. 23 remaining.

Rhar was ready to hit it with her sharp stick again whn little pointy sticks make it stop moving. "Rhar here! Gurr here!" Gurr snorts at the thing and then sniffs at the tracks. Rhar adds, "Track here, too!"

Lothos looks around, looking back to the village. "I suggest we go back and ask what they want done. They may insist we check its lair, but I'd prefer we at least ask first, just in case the village is attacked while we are gone."

Corra frowns a bit and then moves her way down and then heads towards Rhar, "Think it was sent or just encouraged to come this way?" she asks as she glances the way the thing came.

Rhar nods. "Make people safe. Then go look." Gurr starts trotting back for the tower and village.

Lothos nods, and follows Rhar back towards the village.

Corra nods and glances around the village now.

As the group heads back to the village, a trail of blood can be found on the road. Something has been dragged off to the side of the road...

Lothos looks at the blood, frowning and looking off the direction it was dragged. "See...I knew it was a distraction." He looks back to the village to see if any signs of chaos are there.

"Follow blood!" Rhar suggests. Or directs. Gurr sniffs at it, and Rhar leans over his shoulder to sniff, too. As they follow it.

The trail of blood is easy to follow, but it leads towards a copse of trees that is a bit dense.

GAME: Lothos rolls survival: (20)+6: 26

Corra cocks her head to the side as they approach the trees and is being a bit alert, she has her bow out, "Be careful, good spot for an ambush."

Lothos leans down, looking at the blood and slowly following the tracks. He points through the bushes, "I think they went this way." He has some minor training in tracking, but is no expert.

GAME: Rhar rolls survival: (13)+12: 25

You paged (Lothos, Rhar) with 'You use your tracking skill to great effect. You can actually visualize how it all happened. A man was walking along the road, hurriedly, probably a curious on-looker wondering what is has alerted the watch. Then three other humanoids jump out from the side of the road where they were hiding and begin hacking the persons where he stood. Most likely axes were used judging on the blood splatters. Once the person is dead, which looks like it happened instantly, the body is carried off the road and into the copse of trees by the three humanoid creatures. You see no more tracks coming out of the copse of trees.'

"Three hunters. Sneak hunt. Jump out, grab prey. Hide in trees." Rhar tells the others whatshe thinks happened and points at the trees where the trail leads.

GAME: Corra rolls perception+2: (7)+16+2: 25 GAME: Lothos rolls perception: (10)+6: 16 GAME: Rhar rolls perception: (13)+14: 27

You paged (Rhar, Corra) with 'You see three pair of eyes watching you all very, very intently.'

Corra cocks her head to the side, "Ware, something within," she murmers to the others.

"There!" Rhar calls out and points. "There! There!" She points two more times. "See eyes!" Gurr growls, but Rhar pats his shoulder in sort of a calming way.

GAME: Lothos casts Flaming Sphere. Caster Level: 5 DC: 17

Lothos nods, "Alright, lets see if we can't get them out of their hiding." He pulls a few things out of a pouch and speaks some words, a ball of flames springing into existence where Rhar was pointing.

GAME: Lothos rolls initiative: Roll: 2 + Bonus: 4 = Total: 6 GAME: Corra rolls initiative: Roll: 4 + Bonus: 4 = Total: 8 GAME: You roll initiative for Berserkers: Roll: 15 + Bonus: +1 = Total: 16 GAME: Rhar rolls initiative: Roll: 1 + Bonus: 3 = Total: 4

The three hidden figures come out of hiding the moment Lothos begins chanting in strange language. Most likely they have encountered spellcasters before and know how to deal with them. Still, their main target is not Lothos but Corra. They run at full tilt, faster than normal two legged people can run. And they were upon here in an instant, ululating their battle cry...

Lothos hovers in the air a few moments longer, then settles back to the ground. He starts picking over the bersekers with his hair, turning them and inspecting them. "Well, lets hope this is all that's going to happen today. I'm running low on spells."

The last berserker tries to stand up, ululating faintly as he does so since he already has been hit hard by both Lothos and Rhar and Gurr. As he does so, the rider once again strikes him hard, and then he gets finished off by her wolf. The area is quiet once again.

Corra collects the undamaged arrows and then looks around for a moment, taking in the trees and remaining area. She is expecting something else but she is always over cautious.

In the copse of trees is the remains of a villager. His head and arms dangling to the rest of the body by a thin portion of skin. He looks to be a nondescript person, pretty average looking of average built. But he could have a family inside the village. They would still want to see his remains.
