**BEGIN LOG**

<OOC> Rogun says, "Elessa said something about being late. So what I'm inclined
to do is to go ahead and get organized and then start. Given my experience with
these things thirty minutes or so will pass before things get too hairy."

<OOC> Rogun says, "Hopefully she'll be there by then. If not, she can 'wake up
and join' when she gets here."

<OOC> Rogun says, "So first things first. Given that this is a fantasy forest
there probably are small clearings (surrounded by trees). Streams. Maybe sink
holes. Is there any particular location someone wants to say y'all setup camp
(if you can roll well enough to find these exotic locales)?"

<OOC> Rogun says, "Or just 'in the woods' is sufficent?"

<OOC> Ferawyn says, "anywhere in the forest is fine by me. But I imagine if
everyone wants a fire, but not to start a big fire, they'll want a clearing that
won't set the grass on fire."
<OOC> Rogun says, "I'd be willing to handwave fire difficulty. I figure between
Ferawyn and Remethaer y'all can safely build a fire pit that won't enflame the
campsite without some external hazard."

<OOC> Remethaer says, "I imagine it'd depend on the night. If it's windy and
cold something near a windbreak (the lee of a hill, a dense copse) would be nice.
If it's a nice night then just some place with comfy ground. A freshwater source
is always nice but it doesn't need to be right on top of the camp."

<OOC> Kravar my ideal would be someplace on top of a hill but with some rocks or
trees or other stuff so that there's some cover from things outside of the camp
<OOC> Kravar says, "Fallen trees"
<OOC> Kravar says, "Maybe something like this:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1584642"
<OOC> Ferawyn says, "lets use an amalgamation of standing and fallen trees,
perhaps freshwater nearby."

<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. Those who want to predict the weather roll Survival."
GAME: Ferawyn rolls survival: (14)+12: 26
GAME: Kravar rolls survival: (3)+6: 9
GAME: Remethaer rolls Survival: (20)+10: 30

Remethaer and Ferawyn predict that it's going to be partly cloudy with a light
summer breeze. They anticipate no storms or severe weather. The moon is waxing
gibbous.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Now. Knowledge Geography."
<OOC> Rogun says, "This is to attempt to find a hill similar to what Kravar
presented. A known geographical feature of the land."

GAME: Remethaer rolls Knowledge/Geography: (18)+7: 25

Based upon a desire of some cover Remethaer is able to discern a hill not quite
as stark as the one Kravar presented in the picture. It's about three-quarters
size and more rounded. The rocky soil causes the trees to be a bit more sparse
than in the rest of the forest. The trees themselves vary in size but are
typically about thirty to sixty feet tall with the lower branches stout enough
to support one or two medium-sized individuals at a time.

There is fallen tree midway up the hill in one section. The top of the hill is
bald.

Water is a short hike away and you are able to secure plenty for the evening
prior to settling in.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Camp at the top. Near the fallen tree or at the base?"
<OOC> Kravar votes at the top
<OOC> Remethaer says, "The top is fine."

<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. Ferawyn, I believe Remethae has a dog. Do you have an
animal companion?"
<OOC> Ferawyn does not.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. Kravar volunteered for first watch. Barring objections.
Do who takes second? Does Remethaer's dog get its own watch slot or is it
watching with him? Obviously Elessa will not have a slot unless she appears in
the next few minutes."
<OOC> Ferawyn wanted to sleep through the first watch since, I think, elves
don't sleep very long.
<OOC> Remethaer says, "Kravar can have first, I'll take the second with the dog,
and Ferawyn can have the last?"
<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay."
<OOC> Ferawyn nods.

-=Fade In - A Hilltop Campsite=-

The current quest has found our adventurers atop a bald hill-site in the middle
of the dense woodland. Having spent an hour at dusk assuring their campsite was
in order the vast wilderness knowledge purported by Remethaer and Ferawyn has
provided enough food, water, and a fire which is unlikely to get out of control
without some outside assistance.

As dusk turns to night they share a meal together before setting a watch and
turning in for the evening.

Kravar volunteers for the first watch if only to spare the racket of donning and
removing his armor multiple times. His shift passes without incident as the fire
dies to a low state.

Remethaer and his companion are awakened next. The veteran ranger is quite
accustomed to having his sleep disturbed in such a manner. He tracks his time by
the movement of the moon and occupies his time without fear for the darkness
over the valley below.

Ferawyn awakes next. Her sylvan form seemingly less dependant upon sleep than
her companions she arises feeling fully rested and ready for the next day's
adventure. However, communing with nature she is preternaturally aware of her
surroundings..

..the complex symphony of nature is interrupted by a discordant note. Nearby she
detects the movement of not one, not two, but three separate entities. At least
one of them is much larger than the others though she cannot quite yet see its
skulking form in the low-light of the moon.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Roll init. Ferawyn."

<OOC> Rogun says, "Your action."
<OOC> Ferawyn says, "I'm definitely hopping off of my tree and waking remethaer
up."
<OOC> Rogun says, "Pose it. He'll wake next round."

Tilting her head with a start, Ferawyn easily slides down out of the tree she
was sleeping on, and nudges Remethaer. "Reme. Wake up. We have company." She
says first in sildanyari, then in a language reme will definitely not recognize
before she finally speaks it in common.....

<OOC> Rogun says, "Roll perception again."

GAME: Ferawyn rolls perception: (20)+12: 32
Ferawyn only would note that the hillside forms continue their cautious approach.
As she slides off her perch and moves to wake her companion they seem to pause
for a beat.

Her senses meld with nature as she wakes her companion. For a moment she can
clearly detect the three forms despite the darkness and distance between she and
they..

**PERMIT TO FERAWYN ONLY** The two smaller forms are quadrupeds and you
determine them to be animals weighing approximately 90 pounds. The third form is
large. Nearly ten feet tall. The two smaller forms break formation and begin to
circle with one on either side of the camp. You can determine the larger one to
be doing something.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Remethaer roll initiative"

You paged Ferawyn with 'Also. They are about sixty feet away.'

but solid, kick to Kravar. "Wake up Kravar, we have company and we need your

<OOC> Rogun says, "The overall terrain is forest, yes. The hilltop is bald."
<OOC> Ferawyn says, "K. my AC is 18, not that it matters now...but."

An arrow flies in from the darkness striking Ferawyn as she moves from Remethaer
to Kravar.

**Remethaer** Something is shooting a bow from out in the darkness. Its far
enough away that its hard to detect.
Emit to whom?

**Ferawyn** You realize the large shape is firing a bow as you are struck with
an arrow. The other two shapes continue to circle.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Ferawyn."
<OOC> Ferawyn is giving Kravar bull's strength.
<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay."
GAME: Ferawyn casts Bull's Strength.

In the process of rolling to his feet, Remethaer ducks at the whistle of arrows.
"Handy bloody wolves!" He counters with an awkward grind, scooping up the
elaborate compound stick of metal and wood. He pushes at Elessa with his foot,
"Hunter's step, quick miss."

<OOC> Rogun says, "Kravar. You can stand and grab weapons this round if thats
what you want to do."
<OOC> Kravar nods...can we pretend my pose was for this round? :)
<OOC> Rogun says, "Yes. :)"

Kravar opens his eyes with a start, then struggles to his feet, taking up his
sword first and then looking for his shield. "What is it?" He tries to blink
away sleep.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Perception from the three who have had turns."
"ERGH!" Ferawyn yelps as the arrow hits her in the shoulder. However, she
doesn't let it break her concentration. "Paulein, giver of fruits, embolden this
warrior for the fight ahead." She says in druidic.....

<OOC> Remethaer says, "+8 if Scent applies."

Another arrow flies in. This one a bit wide striking the ground with a *THUNK*.

**Ferawyn** The large shape fires another arrows. You lose track of the other
two in the hail of arrows though they were last at opposite ends of the
encampment in the darkness.

**Kravar** An arrow just flew in. It's dark out there.

**Remethaer** Now that you've shaken off your sleep you can determine that
whatever it is out there in the darkness appears to be quite large. The crude
arrows look more like large short-bow ammunition. The hair on the back of your
neck stands on end. You feel like you are being encircled.

The dog is diligent and seemingly aware that the major threat is ahead.

you for the moment."

<OOC> Rogun says, "Ferawyn."

<OOC> Ferawyn says, "I can still see the one who fired the arrow?"
<OOC> Rogun says, "Not clearly. IT's definately concealed by the darkness but
yes you are aware of its rough size and position from your previous rolls."
<OOC> Ferawyn is going to cast a summon nature's ally then.....
<OOC> Ferawyn says, "2nd level. Unfortunately I didn't have a spell prepared
since I goofed on my last readysp.....:/"
<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. What are you summoning. Also it will take a full round
and roughly where will it be appearing?"

<OOC> Rogun says, "Kravar."
<OOC> Kravar says, "Sorry...so did I see any enemies, or where that arrow came
from?"
<OOC> Rogun says, "You have the direction the arrow came from. Otherwise its
just dark."

<OOC> Ferawyn says, "It'll burn my last 2nd level spell. It'll be a small fire
elemental, and I'll plop it right next to the guy firing arrows."
<OOC> Rogun says, "He's about sixty feet out. You can get it about halfway
between you and it."
<OOC> Rogun says, "Due to the range of the spell."

<OOC> Kravar hmm one last question is there any way to take cover from arrows on
our hill?
<OOC> Rogun says, "You can fall prone or get behind one another. The hilltop
itself is bald."
<OOC> Kravar will switch to hiw own bow and try and stand in front of Ferawyn
<OOC> Kravar says, "Between her and the arrow guy"
<OOC> Rogun says, "Okay. You'd give her pretty good cover. Pose it."

Shaking her head, Ferawyn grumbles a bit. "We have no cover. We're gonna need to
distract him a bit." She then stands still and begins to chant........
<OOC> Rogun says, "Also, Kravar, is your AC setup correctly from your sleep
state?"

A third arrow flies in from the same direction. This time is strikes Kravar as
he physically shields Ferawyn with his own body.

*Remethaer* Same results. The large form is firing arrows. You get the sense
there's something else lurking. If the arrows are coming from the north the
other shapes are east and west making the camp nearly surrounded.

*Kravar* Now you can make out the vague shape of a large creature. Approximately
ten feet tall sixty feet beyond the encampment. It's shooting arrows.

*Ferawyn* The large creature continues to draw and fire arrows. It's not
attempting to move at this point. You pick back up the other two creatures. If
the arrows are coming from the north the other shapes are east and west making
the camp nearly surrounded.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Reme you are up."

Kravar glowers at the arrow, then nods at Ferawyn. He slides away his sword and
sets down his shield, coming up holding his bow. Then an arrow hits him, making
him flinch.

"They're attempting to flank," Remethaer observes, turning a slow circle to
catch the movement near the base of the hill. "I'll be back." He snaps his
finger and dips low to scuttle towards the east, glancing this way and that as
he goes. When the dog blocks the Xian's path the rifle comes up by reflex, his
thumb tracing out the intricate patterns of the arming plate. The spiral-flash
of mana and a thunderous report conjures a stifled yip and a violent splash of
blood from the lupine form.

As the ranger raises his rifle the wolf goes low in preparation to strike.
However, the ranger is faster and the shot connects solidly causing a pained yip
to coincide with the noise of the gunshot. The wolf turns and begins to retreat
into the night.

about something coming into camp. She quickly looks around and sees that they
are moving off and quickly scrambles to her feet. Not bothering with her armor,
she grabs her shortbow and several arrows. Turning, she quickly looks over to
where the others went to make sure she knew where the dangers seem to be coming
from.

At the end of her chanting, Ferawyn pops her hands together, which seems to be
enough to spark a fire into existence. That fire mosves with a life of it's own
and immediately goes after the archer attacking them, seeting his clothes on
fire. Ferawyn smiles a bit, but then extends her hand towards the now lit archer,
blowing winds and a bit of rocks against it.....a wind powerful enough to hurt
and mess up his aim a little.

drops her bow and arrows and quickly moves closer to the thing. She has her
sword and pulls it out and gets up to the creature with the bow. Nope, it's not
going to get away with sneaking up on them that easily.

GAME: Rogun rolls 1d4: (1): 1

The light cast by the elemental partially illuminates the archer. It is a tall
spindly creature with moss-like hair on its head, chest, and under its arms with
greenish brown skin that is almost bark-like in appearance with a dingy rag-like
loin cloth. Whereas it was holding the bow the bang from Remethaer's gun catches
its attention and at nearly the same instant a jittery fire elemental heaves
itself onto its form.

Although the tiny spark of flame is nearly inconsequential to its largish form
the elemental has a profound psychological effect for as its hair catches fire
it gives a deafening shriek and hurls its bow to the ground as the air whips to
life sending debris and dirt upon its form and into its eyes.

Either unaware, or too distracted to respond to the encroaching Kravar and
Elessa it slashes madly at the tiny elemental. The spark flits about, seeming
unaffected by the massive claws, as it singes away small sections of flesh.

past the crown to stare down at the opposite side of the hill.

The troll is still frenzied at the fire which is moving about its form. It claws
angrily actually catching it one time such that the flame burns a lot less
brightly.

Meanwhile the various wounds that have been inflicted upon it can be seen to
visibly mend as the bleeding staunches almost immediately and the great gash
Kravar inflicted starts to rapidly close.

Although the various burns seem unaffected by this regeneration.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Pose away. Kravar."

The little fire elemental is still going after the troll, and sets it on fire
yet again. Ferawyn tries to hit it with another storm burst, but she blasts the
wind in a different direction.......

The Redridge Mastiff bristles, its great mane rolling as the muscles play
beneath. Remethaer slows with the rifle at the ready and blue motes of energy
play between his thumb and the arming plate. Trails of warm aether already
rising slowly from the long barrel.

Elessa frowns as she had completely missed her attack earlier. This time, she
slashes at it and in a decent spot too but whirls back in order to try and and
make sure it doesn't get at her.

Blow after blow lands upon the troll. Its flesh is alight again and although the
wind and rocks narrowly miss it Kravar's double slash and Elessa's well-aimed
flay open its flesh and green-black blood pours over them as it almost falls to
its knees.

As the fire elemental dims, its horrid face turns to Kravar and with a gruesome
snarl. It swings wildly at the man its hooked claws glittering in the fire that
still burns its flesh. The first blow comes in on the man's left side, ripping
into his ribcage and the second hooks him at about his shoulder.

For a moment the troll's hooks are trapped and then, with a jerk, it rends them
free inflicting mighty damage upon the Aesir in the process.

<OOC> Rogun says, "You may dramatically slay it."

"Dog," Remethaer snaps his fingers to draw the mastiff's attention, flicking a
quick gesture before darting closer to the melee. The arming plate is already
primed, the rifle charged with a manaload as he brings the barrel up once more.
Again, the artifact discharges a raucous report and the magicite flares outward
to push the condensed ball of energy into the troll. The beast takes the blast
full force, regenerative matter explodes backwards to smear the flora behind it
before toppling singed, stabbed, and beaten.

In the near-distance the wolf rises from its position as if intent upon helping
its master. However, the wounds inflicted upon the troll come so quickly that
animal instincts override its protective instincts for it is clear it will not
survive when so heavily outnumbered.

The wolf turns and rushes down the hill disappearing into the night.

The hunks of regenerative matter twitch vaguely..

Those close by would be able to note that they appear to be growing larger -
after a time.

<OOC> Rogun says, "Disregard inits at this time."
<OOC> Rogun says, "You may RP freely for a bit."
<OOC> Ferawyn says, "Rogun.....I'm gonna roll knowledge/nature for a bit of info
for trolls."

Kravar sheathes his blades, collects his bow and then pauses to eye the troll's
remains. "Did you see that? That piece...it moved."

GAME: Ferawyn rolls knowledge/nature: (17)+9: 26
<OOC> Rogun says, "That is sufficent to understand the nature of trolls and
fire."
<OOC> Ferawyn nods.

Elessa cringes a bit as the thing falls over and dies. "That is... it's
twitching," she frowns. "Why is it twitching?"

Walking closer, Ferawyn grits her teeth as she sees the pieces move. "Light
another fire. We need to burn the body, quickly!"

The largest section of troll remains is clearly regenerating itself. The
twitching becomes spastic muscular action as nerve ending tie themselves
together and receive uncoordinated signals.

The next largest piece is now discernable as a section of its shoulder and
upper-arm. It's quickly knitting the lower-arm and the torso appears to be
thickening.

The next few largest pieces continue to grow.

Elessa looks to Ferawyn, "I think the fire at camp is still burning." She turns
quickly in order to go and see if she could get a lit timber in order to try and
burn the troll body.
Kravar rushes back up to the hilltop and their campsite, slinging his bow across
his back (and after a moment's hesitation, the shield he dropped earlier). Then
he grabs logs from their fire, one in each hand. Finally he runs back to the
spot the troll fell, offering one of the makeshift torches to Ferawyn. "Burn
every piece?"

Ferawyn says, "every single piece, otherwise we'll have a completely new troll
from each piece!"

Ferawyn then, once she realizes she's being handed a torch, grabs the torch and
starts putting it to every small piece......then working on the larger one if no
one else hits the body first.

Remethaer whistles the Dog off, breaking the Redridge mastiff's posturing as he
lowers his own weapon. "Never a dull moment!" He's shouting. Just a little. But
then his weapon isn't the most quiet in the many worlds. He sniffs as he walks
over and plucks a smokey, wax-stoppered vial from one of the pockets of his
duffel coat... but holds onto it as people run about with torch logs.

Kravar nods in understanding and then starts with the largest piece, holding the
burning log next to it, waiting until the troll bits blacken and then moving
over to the another side and repeating the process.

Elessa has some logs too and starts putting the body to the fire as well. "It
doesn't look like we have very long..." She looks over to Kravar though as he
runs around. "Are you okay? It looked like you took a hard hit from it during
the fight."

The pieces shrivel and shrink when the heat is applied as if particularly
flammable in this weakened state.

With time you are able to identify and incinerate every piece. Soon the entire
area reeks nauseatingly of burned troll.

The entire affair took only minutes and at least three hours of darkness remain.
Whether the adventurers choose to remain so-as to rest and heal Kravar or start
their trek earlier to get away from the troll stench no other encounters come
before the dawn.

In the far distance there is lonely sound of a lonely wolf howling..

..and then, moments later, a second howl can be heard.
