  • Title: Plenty Of Fun In The Woods
  • GM: Whirlpool
  • Summary: Alexandria is hiring adventurers to fill gaps in patrols on the edge of the Felwood, with recent activity around the spires in the cursed forest. A normal, uneventful patrol where nothing bad will go wrong, right?

With the Mythwood Wardens strained perilously thin keeping the Spires of Linneia safe alongside working the borders of the Felwood itself, adventurers from Alexandria are being called in frequently to 'plug the gaps' in their efforts. The last thing needed is bands of random looters, would-be heroes, and ne'er-do-wells getting into the mix to make things more problematic.

Today, that's where you come in. You've been given a zone to patrol, a point a and a point to stway between, with the order being to keep an eye on things and investigate any unusual happenings.

Being on the border of the Felwood facing Alexandria means it is entirely likely tht there will in fact be unsusual happenings to ivnestigate, but hopefully nothing too serious.

Either way, it's a job.

At the moment, you've just gotten started and you're already on patrol, having arrived at the site from the forward Felwood camp.

It is quiet as it grows into late morning, and you've got a long ways to go. A patrol station, just a little hovel set against a tree, is your first desintiaton, and you probaly have an hour of walking through the edge of the cursed forest before you get there.

Thoth is minding itself to be careful in its steps. Its small taloned feet stepping over large vines and around bushes. Analyzing what wildlife it can, but failing to recognize much in the way of these 'gifts of nature', as it were. The Felwood corrupts, and it corrupts absolutely. It doesn't help that Thoth isn't much on the up and up on anything natural to begin with.

It's very much not the kind of locale it was raised in.

Another hour to go. Luckily, Thoth isn't one to get tired easily.

"This one hopes one of its memories does not lie at fault for the state of this place." Thoth remarks.

There was only a pair of horns pointing upright and a few ribbons. The rest of Aelwyn was covered in a leather cloak, tightly wrapped about him and his face. A glaive was pointing upwards with a flame flickering across its curved blade, but it was too not happy about the weather. "Burning the forest would be good for the weather." The draconian rumbles from behind the cloak. "In an evergrowing list of reasons to burn the place."

At least being on the edge of the felwood meant not actually having to be in the felwood. Hopefully things would remain that way.

"Burning the forest isn't a good idea. For one, I don't think this forest would let itself get burnt down, for another, do you really want cursed forest gas getting let free and drifting over Alexandria? That's how like, Alexandria gets corrupted by the lower planes, or really mean spirited fey, or something else equally unpleasant." Eztli sighs loudly. "Well, a memory can't be at fault, so we should be alright. Just a bit to go before a break, not too long now!"

"Big and Brave, she's not afraid~" Carver sings low, pitched from her chest. While not a large, imposing figure on her own, she is sat astride her horse and thus towers over the rest of her group by a fair's margin. The conversation brimming to her right makes her swing her gaze, squinting. Then smirking.

"I bet this place getting set ablaze would smell like demon's arse, just the grossest biggest fart." She presses her lips together, and exhales sharply, as if to mimic a felflatulant.

The first leg of your journey is complete without incident. You're able to find the patrol station.

...except it looks like it has been thoroughly ransacked. Tipped over, all the supplies turned out onto the dirt and rifled through.

A set of tracks leads from it deeper into the Felwood ...

... because of *course* it does. The tracks are so obvious one can not help but feel that they are quite deliberate.

Aelwyn was used to getting ridicule and protests over his conviction. "Tch." He suffices to let out. Though when the group arrives at the scene of what was supposed to be a point of rest and cozyness, the Dragoon pauses. Then he points at the tracks. "Who is in favour of not burning the forest now?" Another sound leaves him, but he starts eyeing the forest line. "This one supposes we have to chase down the tracks?"

When they arrive to the ransacked patrol station, Thoth takes a moment to assess if anything had been taken. It seems oblivious to the idea that this was all done to draw them along the path. Instead, it is focused on what might have happened at this location. Perhaps what beast could have done this. Eventually, it does note; "Oth~... Carver." It seems to be trying to get away from some of its habits. "Do these tracks look odd to thee?" Awkward, perhaps?

"S'all bait, got less shame than a dwarf lass in an elf's bath house." Carver explains when prompted, pointing out the all-too-obvious signs; they might as well have left signs pointing where to go. "It's almos' like they went back and forth once or twice just to make sure there's no lick of confusion of who went where. Footprints and the drag marks, see, they don't make sense. People don't much walk like that in the wors' kinda stupor." She struggles how to break up her train of consciousness. Snap goes the fingers. "This is the tracker's equivalent of dropping your trousers an' givin' your best friend the shiny side of your cheeks, innit." She slips off her horse, "An' yeah, we have a professional if not ethical ree-sponso-ability to go sniffin' out who did this."

"And here I was hoping to have some place to rest on this patrol." Eztli grumbles quietly to herself. "By the gods I need a massage, or several, or maybe someone to just smack my back with a sledgehammer a few times, my back's got more knots in it than sailor's reunion party. Guess there's no getting around going into the forest, then."

"Dwarves have plenty of decency in an elven bath house." Eztli shrugs to herself. "Is that off? I guess, yeah, maybe those tracks are a bit weird. So, do we just keep going on and report the obvious trap later, then?"

A little time passes. You're on your way deeper into the Felwood, but you don't get much beyond the periphery following these tracks that become a little more spaced out as their stride seems to have changed.

And then..

... a voice calls out, "LOOK OUT FOR THE BEAR TRAP!"

Naturally, this is the kind of thing that makes everyone freeze in their place. Up in the trees, ahead of you, is a tiny figure with glinting, black-veined wings. It's a pixie.

Oh *no*. It's a PIXIE.

Naturally, the idea of a bear trap being in the way, in the lightly frosted and snowed on ground, has everyone also glancing down.

... that's when the shadow appears over Carver.

A particularly large, conspiciously bear-shaped shadow.

... that is falling straight towards them.

As Thoth gets closer along the path, helping its best to aid Carver. Ra, the magical Owl, flies ahead of them, trying to scan the forest. Aiding in following these rather obvious tracks. This is an obvious trap of course.

And so, when a Pixie appears, Thoth's immediately response is...

"What is that?"

For it has never seen a Pixie before! Nor a bear-trap! This aids it in not glancing down, and instead looking up at the Pixie itself. Sometimes, ignorance truly is bliss.

"Other Carver! Watch out!" It calls out.

Carver was leading Lambchop ahead, having just stepped off to better follow any signs of tracks or spot traps. Not that it can prepare her for the vertical thinking of a lifelong mischief maker, but nothing can. She kneels, frowning as she spots a pile of... waste? Debris? She looks up and spots the Pixie.

"No." An utterance of horror profound. She does not question the warning, instead diving as soon as it given to avoid whatever trap has been set.

Aelwyn was getting gloomier by the moment they start to delve deeper into the forest. It was never a good trip, even if a short one. A fact that is quickly proven to be true. Raising his head up, his first reaction is to reach and pull the glaive in front of him, backing away.

Eztli continues wandering along with the others, very much happy to let other people take the league in following any tracks. The small makari stops in her tracks, and sighs. "Oh for gods sake, are you really trashing stuff outside of this forest for a joke?" Eztli grumbles to herself, at least long enough to realize what was actually happening. "CARVER, GET AWAY FROM WHERE YOU'RE STANDING!" They shout out to the ranger.

Thoth tilts its head as it touches its chest, letting a flourish of light pulse over its body. A protective shielding to keep itself safe, it hopes. Its priority is itself still, over its allies. As it believes that if it cannot keep itself safe, it cannot keep its allies safe.

Eztli is luckily more experience at this, and is quicker on her feet. Thoth takes note of the impressive manner in which Eztli protects Carver however. Nodding its head a bit - or rather, bobs it like a bird.

Eztli tried to reach out, but there is no way that they are going to out race a falling bear. The small makari instead jerks their hand to one side, conjuring a sheet of flames above Carver , a bit closer in case the bear fell past and she just smushed the ranger even more against it. "Block them out!" The sorceress hisses, already looking around for the pixie again.

<Draconic>

The pixie pouts.

"You're no fun," it tells Eztli.

...and then disappears from view.

Invisible, no doubt, as such creatures are wond to do.

The bear, on the other hand, hits the invisible force field. Looks very confused. And then angry.

...and then even more angry. IT stands up on its hind quarters above Carver and absolutely bellows a dischordant bellow of rage.

Thoth is quick to pluck one of its 'feathers' off of its broken wings, after they rattle under the thunderous roar of the drop-bear. Seeming more comfortable plucking itself clean than to consider the wings in any other way or shape. The little feather between its fingers begins to turn silver in nature, before it flicks it at the air... where it begins to flit and flutter around it. It seems rather innocent.

Eztli wasn't able to make out if Carver was still there, if the bear squished her, or if the spell really worked, when it became basically invisible. "Carver? You alright there?" They call over, twisting one hand around as she looks up at the tree line. "Reveal the unseen!" They hiss, squinting up at something in the distance. "Hey, get away from them!" She shoots at the bear creature, not really expecting it to listen or leave, or caring too much either other than the immediate threat it was to her allies. "Incinerate" The sorceress hisses, snapping their fingers and summoning a trio of fiery lances that slam into the bear, burning it harshly.

Thoth finally seems to be ready. It flourishes the little feather, which wriggles around its fingers, before one of those fingercaps opens up, and a small rush of flaming red gouts forth, not too unlike Eztli's magic. But this one is paired with the dagger. It moves in a spiral around the ray, moving behind the bear. And using Aelwyn as an aid, it flanks it and stabs it in the flank with its silvery forceful body, while the red ray impacts upon its body! "This one agrees. Please be incinerated." Thoth requests.

Carver rolls over to her belly, and then crawls through and away from the bear. She bears the indignity of writhing through the mud and leaves with as much grace as one such as she can. Only once she is up and away, cleared of the strange barrier enacted by her allies does she rise to a standing position, bringing fingers to her lips.

The loud banshee shriek of a whistle seems to be a command of some sort.

The bite knocks the wind out of Aelwyn though, who hisses in loud pain as his shoulder gets new puncture marks with a snarl. The flaming glaive rises in response and cuts deeply into the creature.

Thoth isn't one to cringe, certainly not visibly. But it is concerned when it sees that Aelwyn is getting harmed by the bear. It's certainly far more resistant than it should be for a regular bear. But then, bears usually don't explode vines outwards when they hit the ground.

"This one believes the flames are a viable path of assault." Thoth remarks, "Quick now, Others." As its Ankh begins to glow, and a radiant light begins to eminate from the Ankh and connects with each and everyone on the battlefield. Empowering them with its own ancient energies.

Carver's well placed arrows fell the bear, which staggers, drops Aelwyhn, and then collapses on top of him.

Crunch.

...fortunately, the bear seems to fade from existence right after that and so Aelwyn is kept from meeting a more ...

...grizzly end.

Eztli fires off another volley of flames, but before she can conjure another set, the bear is gone, and she watches the pixie flying, poorly, into the sky. "I HOPE THAT's A LESSON FOR YOU!" She roars back, gesturing to the sky. "Nice work, Aelwyn, Thoth, Carver? You all alright?"

"This one is unharmed." Thoth answers Eztli dutifully, then turns to watch Carver finish off the bear after their combined efforts. "This one believes this is good enough to report for patrol purposes." It offers.

Aelwyn was a mess on the floor, holding his arms up at the bear that was about to topple over him. It takes him a moment to realize that was not the case. "... this one thinks he is fine." The Dragoon rumbles as he gets up to his feet. Bloodied, well chunked, but still standing. He wipes at his front, hissing. "Tch, and this one needs to repair the cloak again." A low rumble leaves his chest. "... just burn the place next time..." He mutters by himself.
