Spirits? While Seldan is not as familiar with the animistic beliefs held before the Holy Order was known, something is strange here. "Can you speak of what these spirits looked like?" He against pitches his voice soothingly, watching the young man closely. If he frightens the very touchy lad, he will learn nothing, and well he knows it.

Merek nods a bit while he listens to folk offer their input as well, then he takes a moment to cross his arms while he listens to them all, "Interesting," he says, with a thoughtful rub of his chin and nodding also.

The kid isn't struggling, but his breathing is coming faster, now. It's clear that he's in a full-on panic, though Seldan's tone and Olek's weight on him keep him from doing anything too rash. Like running again, or trying to fight his way free. He closes his eyes, shaking his head. "Dark," he whispers. "They moved through the shadows, so fast. Barely had time to scream. Just gone. To the places behind the walls!"

"Very well." Seldan frowns at the answer, both in confusion and concern. "They are in the walls, then." He stands with a smooth motion. "We should take him back, lest he become lost in his panic. Something is down here, but I know not what will happen should he see it again."

Merek nods a bit, while he shifts upon the hip, "Alright then," he says, nodding while he makes a way back if the others are coming also.

Olek nods about taking the kid back. He'll keep a grip on his arm as we get ready to go, and he says, "Yeah, we can take him back, then return here. Walls aren't going anyplace." He looks around though, setting the location in his mind, so he can get back.

The overseer stares at the crew, the look on his face one of minor annoyance. "Spirits," he repeats, like he isn't sure that he heard the word right. "He said that -spirits- /ate/ the crew?"

The trip up to the tunnel was nothing extraordinary. No signs of any spiritual incursion presented themselves, and so far, no more minors have been reported missing. It was easy enough to get the kid someplace quiet where he could rest, but the overseer was waiting as soon as the party returned -- with a guard.

"The only spirits that damn kid has seen are the ones that he drank before he did -- whatever he did to my men," the angry dwarf says in response, clearly not buying any of this story.

Olek shrugs to the overseer, and says, "Well, we got this one, do as you will with him. If you want to call us done and pay us, that's fine, too, but we -were- planning on going down and seeing what else we could find down there in that area."

"As a Cleric, I can voice that his story is possibly true, we can investigate further, until then please don't blame him," Merek offers, with a nod.

GAME: Merek rolls diplomacy: (16)+17: 33

"I do not think it so simple," Seldan agrees, nodding at Merek's remark. "It is too early to lay blame at his feet, and I have no reason to disbelieve him. There is more to this, I think, more even than he can tell us. I would return and learn more as well."

The overseer listens to the others, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. "Bleeding heart holy men," he mutters a little too loudly for it to not have been intentional. Looking back up at the others, he says, "Look. These men are good temple-goers, and we know that the Holy Order does a lot for us. Bring a little light into the darkness of the tunnels. So we can't afford to go against you," he tells them, some of the anger melting out of his face, replaced with fatigue. "But you let this talk of 'evil spirits' get out, and I'm gonna have a full-blown panic. These are superstitious people, with their own traditions. Mines are dangerous places. It comes with the life. Any little thing that can offer protection -- or explain why that loose stone slipped right then and crushed the guy standing next to you, but not you..."

But finally, he relents. "Fine. I suppose if there's something down there, we best know about it. But for the love of the gods, don't tell anyone what you're looking for. And until you get back, that one stays under guard, suspected of murder."

"Deal," Merek offers, lifting up his gloved hands, then he offers one to the overseer to shake his hand, "I appreciate you trusting us, we'll resolve this discreetly for you and your people."

Olek nods to the overseer. "All right. We'll get this sorted out, then. People like things sorted out," he says gruffly. "So we'll sort it out."

Seldan snorts at the overseer's remarks, but does not appear to take offense. Instead, he nods affirmatively, accepting the deal as well. "My silence is yours. We dare not do otherwise," he tells Olek. "If it is not as the overseer here says, the cost will be great. If we are prepared?" He seems more than ready to go back down into the darkness of the mines.

<OOC> Malik says, "Everybody heading down?" <OOC> Malik says, "Or do you wanna IC stock up on stuff?" <OOC> Malik says, "Everybody got healing items and whatever else they need? I can page a staffer to vending machine for a bit." <OOC> Malik says, "They've offered for plot-foo." <OOC> Merek says, "heading in" <OOC> Merek says, "witth" <OOC> Merek says, "cookies" <OOC> Seldan says, "I am good for items." <OOC> Malik says, "Going once, going twice..." <OOC> Olek will be OK <OOC> Malik says, "Alright. :)"

The overseer just waves a hand in Merek's direction, not shaking it as he starts to head back to his office. But true to his word, the guards outside the door of the kid's bunk stay firmly put, heavy mining tools in their hands just in case he gets any bright ideas about escaping into the night.

The paths down into the mines are at least somewhat familiar this time. It's easy enough to retrace the steps taken, no need for tracking even. The night shift hasn't started yet -- apparently, cancelled due to unstable tunnels that need to be surveyed, or so the rumor goes. Doubtless it's just the overseer's way of trying to keep bystanders out of their way. But eventually, the party comes to that nexus of tunnels where they found the kid once more.

<OOC> Malik says, "Woops."

This time, though, things don't look quite as familiar. Six tunnels lead off from the center, in various directions -- but a moment's recollection will show that there were only five tunnels previously. Something has definitely changed.

<OOC> Seldan says, "Can we tell which tunnel is new?" <OOC> Olek would like to do a complete re-inspection of the room? <OOC> Malik says, "Roll perception to see which one seems out of place. :)" GAME: Olek rolls perception: (10)+15: 25 GAME: Merek rolls perception: (14)+15: 29 GAME: Seldan rolls perception: (2)+5: 7 <OOC> Seldan XD It never fails. <OOC> Merek says, "or as we say it ALWAYS fails" <OOC> Merek nods sagely You paged (Merek, Olek) with 'Previously, there were only two tunnels leading downward. Now there appear to be three, a one one between the two tunnels leading back up.' You paged (Merek, Olek) with '* a new one between...' <OOC> Seldan says, "I do not bother to invest in perception, Merek. It is that consistently bad." <OOC> Malik says, "This is like Malik's Diplomacy rolls." <OOC> Malik says, "Wouldn't matter if I invest or not, I'm rolling a 1 or a 2 anyway." <OOC> Seldan points. That.

Olek gestures to a the middle tunnel, and says, "I would be willing to swear that one wasn't there last we were here. Now either there's something fishy going on, or there's moving walls down here in the new construction. But I'm no miner, so I couldn't tell you which was what. But I think we ought to see if it leads to the missing people. If it opens on a schedule, they might have gone down and simply couldn't get back up."

Once Seldan gets back down into the chamber, he stares at the myriad of tunnels, clearly hopelessly lost and more than a little baffled. "There is more than before!" He looks at each one, but shakes his head. "This is strange." It's not until Olek speaks that he looks over. "How can you tell which one is new?"

Merek nods a bit, "I see it also, we should look into it," he says, looking between the two, and nodding also.

Although the paladin might be lost, the other two see the tunnel easily enough. The rocks around the edges are smooth, clearly not new work, worn down by whatever processes normally do such things. Inside, the odd torch sconce can be seen, but no torches held in them, nor other kinds of illumination. The air that blows from this tunnel is surprisingly warm, compared to the others.

<OOC> Olek says, "So, no sign of a hidden door now open?" <OOC> Malik says, "Nope." <OOC> Seldan says, "It sounds more like it wasn't there before and now it is." <OOC> Malik says, "It very much seems that way, yes." <OOC> Olek says, "I realize that's the impression that he's going for. But someone had to put the sconces here." <OOC> Seldan says, "Do the sconces seems to be older, or of a different style?" <OOC> Seldan says, "OR are they the exact same?" <OOC> Malik says, "You can roll perception or an appropriate Craft check to find out!" GAME: Seldan rolls perception: (1)+5: 6 (EPIC FAIL) <OOC> Seldan giggles. <OOC> Malik says, "Wow. It -really- doesn't like you." <OOC> Seldan says, "So long as any combat dice don't look like this, it's all good." GAME: Olek rolls perception: (8)+15: 23 You paged Olek with 'They look more crude than the others. Like the processes for making them hadn't been perfected. The iron is rougher, and it's hard to tell, but it looks like it might be rusting a bit.' <OOC> Malik lets Olek pose what he finds on that.

Olek looks critically at the lantern, and says, "Well, it's not /new/. See that bit of rust there? But these are more crude than the others. Like it was made long ago, before the process had been as detailed as it is today."

Seldan, who had also been looking, shrugs in disgust until Olek speaks. "Truly, your eyes are sharp, Olek. I see no difference." How he sees no difference, is hard to fathom. With that, said, though, he looks further down into the identified tunnel. Perhaps he will get some use out of the blessing he had called earlier.

<OOC> Seldan says, "I had cast Endure Elements earlier, let me do so again for tracking." GAME: Seldan casts Endure Elements. Caster Level: 5 DC: 16 <OOC> Malik nodnods! <OOC> Seldan says, "I just noticed a thing." <OOC> Malik says, "Yes?" GAME: Merek refreshes spells. GAME: Merek casts Endure Elements. Caster Level: 6 DC: 14

Merek makes his way in with the others, calling upon powers as a Theurge to shift about him, while he makes a way about in the place.

<OOC> Malik says, "I bet you just noticed your CL for that spell is wrong." <OOC> Malik says, "Mine are too." <OOC> Malik says, "That feat doesn't seem to actually move it up." <OOC> Seldan says, "Yes, and I just sent in a bug report." <OOC> Seldan says, "Mine is wrong in a different wat." <OOC> Malik says, "Alright! So, everyone going down the new old spooky tunnel?" <OOC> Seldan says, "Sure." <OOC> Olek says, "Yep" <OOC> Merek says, "ya why not"

The stone in the tunnel seems to be about as smooth as the rest of it, almost like this particular entrace is more cave than mine, made by natural forces rather than the work of a miner's tools. The path leads down on a gentle slope, but as the party moves, the makeup of the walls subtly changes, becoming shinier, and then downright sparkling as tiny crystals start to appear in the stone.

If this tunnel has been here for long, the miners have missed a wealth of resources, leaving it untapped.

<OOC> Malik says, "If ya'll have light sources, it might be wise. The iron sconces don't have torches -in- them. It's dark down there, yo." GAME: Merek casts Dancing Lights. Caster Level: 5 DC: 14 <OOC> Malik says, "Dwarf will be ok, but the rest of ya'll might not be!" <OOC> Olek, ironically, has an ioun torch. <OOC> Seldan also does. <OOC> Malik says, "There ya go then!" <OOC> Merek says, "I have magical spooky light"

As the group moves further down into the dark, Seldan fishes in a pouch, and produces a small crystal from it. He holds this up near his head, and it begins to glow with a warm, golden light, floating in the air near his head, then moving around it. That done, he continues, blinking at the new lights.

Merek opens up a hand while he chants a moment, then the Theurge is bringing about lights to shift about them. Everyone light party.

Olek brings out a somewhat magical stone as well. It's cheap magic, for the hoi polloi, but it's a magical torch that won't go out. It saves on torches, and you don't need to have flint and steel all the time. He can see in the dark, but sometimes being able to see in color helps, too. The shadows are weird because it orbits his head, but that's a small issue.

Seeing in color is definitely worth the change in lighting. The light makes those crystals shimmer with a splendid array of beautiful colors, reds and blues and all other colors of the prism. Some of them are probably not worth much, while others could be worth a small fortune. They grow larger as the tunnel goes downward, the opening widening as the party goes -- and the air getting noticably warmer now, almost uncomfortable. A few hundred feet ahead, it appears to open up into an antechamber of some kind.

As the group moves further down into the tunnels, Seldan stares in open awe at the crystals embedded in the walls, the light from their spells and items sparkling in the depths of a measure of wealth untapped. "There is no way the khazad up there know of this," he breathes wonderingly. The warming air does not seem to trouble him overmuch, thanks to Eluna's blessing, but he looks around him in slack-jawed amazement until they approach the antechamber, and he is abruptly shaken back to reality.

Olek agrees with Seldan that the dwarves don't know about this. "Perhaps the scouts thought so, too, and explored deeper?" He'll check for signs of their passage here. With the passage opening up ahead, he offers, "Shall I douse my light and go forward into the dark to see if there's anything lurking?"

Merek looks around a bit, and nods to Olek, "If you think you can manage, but take this with you," he says, then he chants a bit, before he offers his blessing to him, to place upon the paladin.

GAME: Merek casts Shield of Faith. Caster Level: 6 DC: 14 <OOC> Seldan says, "I think Olek is a barbarian?" <OOC> Olek says, "What a thing to say. ;.;" <OOC> Seldan laughs. <OOC> Olek says, "Just because I might rage more than most paladins..." <OOC> Merek says, "oh" <OOC> Olek says, "But he hangs with paladins and acts and dresses paladinny." <OOC> Merek says, "WELL UH" <OOC> Merek says, "WHICHEVER" <OOC> Seldan laughs. XD <OOC> Olek says, "All good."

The antechamber itself is a wealth of resources. Precious metals and stones line every part of it, the kind of treasures that armies have gone to war for, and then some. Veins of silver and gold run through the walls, and in the center, massive blooms of crystal as tall as a man man be seen. It's a stunningly beautiful display of natural wealth.

As Olek heads forward into the antechamber, the whereabouts of the miners become clear enough -- several bodies lay in the middle of the room. Or what's left of them. most of the flesh has been stripped, leaving a smattering of sinew and bone, some of it apparently partially merged into the stone, the gaping, eyeless expressions still frozen in screams that nobody heard through the stone walls, the horrific sight abruptly putting a halt to whatever beauty this room holds.

"Do not stray farther than call," Seldan agrees, then looks startled by his own statement. He shakes his head briefly, then looks at the walls again. He trails a good distance behind Olek when the group starts moving again.

Olek will not go in too far at all, and he'll head back to the group now that he's found the missing miners, that's his main concern at this point. And ... not good to find them like this, but definitely notworthy. And the fellow we brought in earlier is not a master wizard to make stone run like mud then he's not guity of this! "It's a bit odd up there," he relays. Don't go in all the way, the floor looks unsafe."

Merek waits a bit, then he nods while he looks to listen. Eventually, he begins to move forward, not into the place, but to walk up to anyplace Olek already has, until they can look upon the place fully.

When Seldan gets close enough to see, and his light spills into the room, he stops immediately, suddenly on the highest of guard. "The young man did not do this," he agrees with Olek, surveying the remains of the miners with a grimace. "Something else is afoot."

There's a low rumbling from the tunnel behind the party, the walls seeming to move of their own accord as they constrict a bit, and then pulse back out, travelling at the three adventurers in a sort of rolling wave -- that quickly dislodges itself from the stone, becoming two rolling boulders that grow legs and appendages, standing upright and blocking the path that they just came from. Glowing tigers eyes are set into a featureless 'face' as the large mounds of earth pound a fist into the ground, looking ready to charge!

Seldan whirls as the rumbling of boulders is audible behind them, and his eyes go wide again. "Company!" His shout echoes across the antechamber, and the rasp of leather and steel joins the rumbling sound. "_Alacha._" The word sends a clatter of steel plates and panels to join the cacophony - the heavy steel brooch holding his cloak takes mere seconds to transform into a suit of finely-crafted platemail, the crescent and sphere of Eluna prominent on the breastplate.

Another axe-blow staggers the one he'd been fighting, and his next swing smashes it to pieces, ending the threat from that one. Having gotten free, Seldan paues a little as Merek's hand finds his shoulder. "Her wisdom blesses me," he murmurs in response before moving away again, seeking an angle for a spell and a change of tactics. The newness of the armor, though, is a hindrance he isn't used to, and the spell fizzles as the complex sigils of the spell go awry. A colorful curse that none here have ever heard him use pops out of his mouth, and he again invokes the Dreamer's silent blessing, to help with his wounds just a little more.

Olek, meanwhile, is twirling like a dancer in the better class of ballet studio, spinning around not unlike a top, and not falling over, no matter how much these elementals try to pound his helmet down over his shoulders. Two hard chops at the last elemental chips loose a fair amount of stone, and will perhaps persuade it to play with Olek and leave the others alone for a bit. "And I did that twice to yer mother, ye filthy animal," he swears at the elemental.

It is now Merek's turn! Seldan is next!

<OOC> Malik says, "Merek, you're up!"

Seldan begins to breathe a little easier as more healing is applied, and the khazad has them pinned down! "_Alacha_." He shakes his head in annoyance, dismissing the armor that might have saved him in those first few crucial moments, but is now only in his way. The plates and panels of his armor fold up into themselves and vanish, leaving only the cloak clasp he was wearing earlier, but he ignores that, maneuvering himself to look for the best line.

<OOC> Malik says, "Dwarf just moved out from the three he had pinned. They're all neatly clustered." <OOC> Malik says, "Now would be an excellent time if one wanted to fireball." <OOC> Malik says, "Just saying."

Olek wades his way out of the circle of elementals he's collected, and goes after the one drifing towards Merek, swearing, "I told you, you filthy piece of coprolisth, you're fighting me, not any of them. Now fight me, you schmuck." He lashed out with his long axe and dishes out another stone-crunching blow to it, even as his helmet takes -another- ding. "That's gonna annoy me pretty soon," in a tone that says pretty soon is not going to go well.

Olek looks over his shoulder just in time to see the three elementals he'd gotten all bunched up get blasted to smithereens by his two companions, and he snarls at the last elemental. "You're gonna think they got off lucky when I'm done with you, boyo," he growls. These things can't understand him, and probably wouldn't do a thing differently if they could. But it's more about him talking smack than anything else. Putting words to action, he slams his axe at the last one's leg, and it stumbles, just in time to catch his axe on the upswing, which leaves him laying in two pieces. "And twice on .... bah, nevermind," he says, and looks over to Merek and Seldan. "You two okay there?" he shouts, ignoring his own bloody scalp as inconseuential.

Finally, Seldan finds what he is looking for. He draws a complex set of sigils in the air, then speaks a phrase to them. They light up, crackling with blue-white energy, and hang in the air for a moment before he stabs his hand -through- them, sending a crackling lightning bolt to closely follow Merek's fireball. Scorched rock flies everywhere, blown apart by the force of the blast.

When that's done, and the last one goes down, he goes down to a knee, holding his ribcage and grimacing. He looks a lot better than he did, but still not happy. "They ... closed too fast. I did not get back in time."

<OOC> Merek says, "we won?" <OOC> Malik says, "For now!"

Merek nods a bit to the others, while he shifts a bit, "Well, that was, pretty interesting," he says.
