  • Summary: An injured man makes a call for adventurers from a sickbed in the Temple of Daeus. He is the sole survivor of a group beset by dark-winged angels who pretended to be injured. His companions where killed, and tortured, and he was likewise injured before getting free. His group was investigating a dungeon found in a farmer's field, one that may be of interest to the fiends. Mei begs the adventurers to go in strength, and also sadly informs them he does not have money, but the dungeon is rumoured to hold great riches. Further questions are asked, regarding the Dark Wings' tactics, and Mei shares the farmer's name, Gregor Marshal. Paenitia recognizes this as a solid, slightly maligned local family, a pillar of the community, the exact kind of peasant she is sworn to protect. Shalethiste has joined, and hearing about the threat, also questions Mei as attempts to comfort him, along with Seyardu, as he is quite distraught.

The temple of the Sun Lord glitters golden beneath the same. Rather than walls, the majority of the temple is composed of what appears at first blush to be a raised round platform made of one of the largest slabs of marble likely in existence. Columns rise into the air as if to hold some massive ceiling, though instead of a normal ceiling, one finds the deep blue sky, studded by a disconcertingly close canopy of bright stars. One should not worry, however, as the rain never falls, and the wind never blows on this particular temple, but for a gentle breeze, whatever the weather outside may be.

Despite the austerity of the columns, warmth suffuses the grounds. A grand, marble statue of the Shining Knight stands a the center, a hand outstretched in benediction. Beside Him, the statue of Althea, their hands clasped in love. The central position of the temple to the others gives view to all of their children, and the two look upon one another with the solemnity of love that has been the center of so many tales and legends.

Masterfully designed mana lamps provide further soft, golden lightning where needed, their pedestals carved in the form of the Dragons of Light, over which Daeus is said to have dominion in His form of Draco Solis. Majesty, justice, and welcome suffuse the temple grounds. Around the central temple are a series of smaller buildings, each with a simple function and form. One houses the sacred book depicting some of the earliest known translations of the Laws of Light, which pilgrims from near and far come to visit. Another houses the well-appointed quarters of the Sunguards, and among all the ground bristle the Sunblades.

The temple of Daeus was busy, but then it was always busy. The hustle and bustle was a little stronger near where the patients were kept however. Somewhat due to one in particular who was keeping the Daeusites busy with the coming and going of adventurers. Mei was a slender, delicate-looking man with delicate and beautifully tattooed roses climbing up his arms from vines on his hands and wrists. The white flowers were a stark contrast to his dark skin, and made him look even more delicate than he was.

Turning toward Seyardu, with one leg propped up on a pillow in a cast of some kind since it was broken, Mei tried to get the sith-makar's attention. "Pardon?"

Seyardu had been at the temple of Daeus longer and longer, nowadays. Between training with the sunguards, speaking with people she was getting to know better, and tending to the wounded, much of her days seemed to be inside the strangely lit temple. So it was no surprise for her to be passing by at one point near the wards, where Mei was able to catch them. She stops and waves, offering a wave and smile to the man.

"Peace on your nest, Mei." She greets. "Is there something I can do for you?"

A wide-brimmed red hat enters the room, floating around at waist height for the average person. Presumably there is someone underneath it, though the form is hard to see from a bed, or even a normal vantage point. It is a very wide brimmed hat. There is the clank of heavy armour, but no accompanying foot-steps. The Lucht Siuil's bare feet are quiet on the stone.

"Hola!" She announces herself, her voice warm with feminity although higher pitched in the childlike-yet-not-a-child aspect halflings have. "I am Sister Paenitia Snapdragon del Haranna, Knight of the Pillar and Paladina of Tarien, here to answer the call to adventure. Is this the room of Mei?"

"Oh! Friend Dragon, it is good to see you."

"Could I get some water or tea perhaps?" Mei was polite enough, but the constant stream of adventurers were a strain. He straightened at the sound of an unfamiliar voice however, peering across the room to find the source and seeing only a red hat. "This is Mei's room, or rather mine... for the moment."

"It is yours for as long as you need it, Mei." She says with an accompanying nod at the request. "I will return shortly with some tea."

She turns to see the large hat, and telltale clank of armor. "Ah! Peace on your nest, Dame Paenitia. I believe Mei called you here to speak with him. I am going to go and have some tea made from the kitchens for him, would you like any, yourself? There may be some food to go with it, as the Althean temple made a delivery not long ago."

"Yes, I will take the food. A small plate is enough." The Red Hat says cheerfully, drifting closer to the side of the bed, "The leftovers the patients send back can be scraped together for Ramirez. He does not mind the picked over food."

There is a scrape as a chair is moved, and then the hat rises up. Beneath it is a golem! No... a white mask of a man's face, with a stylized grin and a wide mustache, that completely hides the wearer except for her dark eyes, visible through the holes. "I see you now. You have the much impressive ink. Is there story behind the white roses and the climbing vines?"

If Mei seemed startled by the small figure climbing toward him, it did not show. Perhaps because he was beaming gratefully at Seyardu. "My thanks." He murmured to her, and then turned his attention fully on the small figure at his side. Surprisingly, the question about his tattoos seemed to subdue him slightly, and he took a moment to shake it off. "Yes, but it is a long one in the telling. I would rather share the reason that has surely brought you to my door. I assume you're here because I sent for adventurers?"

Seyardu nods again to the two in the room. "Very well. If there is anything left for Ramirez, I will bring it to you to offer them." She offeres, before she disappears out the door, quickly walking back to the mess area of the temple. With so many followers, there were many who needed to eat.

"Yes. I am sworn to protect the weak and the common folk, and fight the things that oppress them, which come in many forms most easily found while seek adventure" The Red Knight confirms. She waves a heavy gauntlet, "the coin is useful too, for the poor, the alms, and the better gear to fight the oppressors."

She sounds quite cheerful, as if she's smiling while she speaks. It's impossible to tell however, as her dark curls frame the mask and the grin has no gap to show her mouth. "What is the thing I must do? Rescue the Damsel? Slay the great beast? I am not the best choice for sneak around in the sewers or disable the intricate magic trap."

Now Mei grows even more serious than before, his dark eyes meeting those within the frame of the mask seriously. When he begins, it's the same words that he's been speaking to all of those who've come to his bedside since he sent out his request for adventurers. "It is devils that I ask you to face. Or so I'm told. They guard the road to a dungeon which I believe holds treasures untold." He had a compelling story, and he laid it out simply enough. "The devils killed all of my companions, and injured me as well. I nearly lost my life or I'd go out myself... So you see I need a band of adventurers strong and brave enough to challenge the devils and conquer the dungeon. At this point I don't care what's in there, I just... I want the devils dead; to avenge my comrades."

"Ha ha! The revenge! I know this well." Her eyes crinkle at the sides, smouldering and fixed on Mei's, long lashes briefly visible as she blinks. Her voice almost purrs, "You are like the men of my homeland, the fight will not leave them even when they are out of the fight!"

She pats the side of his bed. He seems so delicate she's worried a pat from her gauntlet might break him. "I have fight underground and in tunnels. It not my favourite. I think this a task more is needed for, if only to carry the great treasure back."

"The other adventurers, I do not see them line up outside the room. They have gone already? you expect more? They do not agree?" Mei looked a little embarrassed by this last question. "It's my lack of funds which scares most off. You see, while I'm sure the dungeon itself has treasure... I don't have much to my name to offer for killing the devils save the location of the dungeon. So most of the others have turned away and refuse to go on my behalf."

"Ah! You appeal to my Order, to help the poor." Paenitia says happily, clanking her gauntlet on her breast and the rusted symbol of a pillar on her her armour, "this is why I have the equipment that make all jealous."

She laughs, placing her hands on her hips, "I see if there like minded to help out. Some I know will go for the fight alone."

A few minutes passed before the silver sith-makar returns. In her hands is a large platter, Tea with enough cups for the three and any who may show up just in case, and several dried fruit scones, as well as several sandwiches of meat, cheese and greens. This was set down on the table, the sith-makar remaining beside it a moment.

"Would either of you like anything in your tea?" She asks, looking between them.

"There is, issues with gold, in some way?" Seyardu asks afterwards. "If there is anything I can do, payment is not an issue."

The man on the bed looked at Paenitia seriously. "I will not tell you where to go, if you mean to go alone. I won't have more people dying. No, I want at least a few people to go." He grimaced. "I'd go myself if I could afford to have my blasted leg healed proper." He glanced toward Seyardu, offering a tight smile. "I won't take charity either. But... If you want to offer some kind of monetary reward I won't stop you. I'd take that kind of charity to see the devils that killed my friends dead."

"I do not go alone! The Brave Ramirez always adventure with me." Paenitia says, sounding unconcerned and waving a gauntlet, "I will find the others. Friend Dragon here, we have been together oft. I know the good boxer and other knights. They will come for jolly cooperation."

She turns to look at Seyardu, shaking her head, "The tea alone is fine."

Turns back to Mei, leaning forward a little to peer into his eyes again, "So, the devil is in the detail; do you have the detail of these devils?"

Into the home of the Sun comes a glimmer of the Moon. A small, sky hued figure coifed in flowing copper pays respectful formalities for one visiting the Father's temple before proceeding inward under some direction from an Initiate here and there.

Arriving in the doorway of the quarters afforded one in need of adventurers, the little Mul' offers a warm(she hopes, comforting) smile and a, "Greetings! I understand there is a fellow seeking adventurers...?"

"I, do not have much to offer, after having my new armor made, despite the discounts insisted upon." Seyardu sighs, pouring a cup of tea and handing it to the knight. "You should have something else though, I did have the sandwiches made for you, but if you do not want one, that is alright. And the tea for yourself, Mei?" She asks the man.

She seems to think though, and sighs just slightly. "I understand your enthusiasm, Paenitia, but this is something to not be tackled without proper preparation and care. If these are the winged fiends I have dealt with before, then it is important. They nearly killed me, twice, and the second time, Aryia as well."

She turns to the door, and offers a smile and wave to the elf. "Peace on your nest, this is correct. Mei has been asking for Adventurers to meet with them, so he may speak."

Mei started to respond to Paenitia's question, but the entrance of a new figure stalls him for a moment and he waves a greeting to the newcomer. So he allows himself the distraction of tea. "No tea or sugar, thanks. But since you brought food, a sandwhich would be lovely." Then he turns his gaze toward the adventurers. "Greetings, I was just about to tell this other adventurer what I know about the devils that attacked me, and who I am trying to get a band of adventurers together to kill."

The man on the bed is a delicately built one, with rich dark skin and tattoos of white roses winding up his arms from vines that twine around his fingers and wrists. He has one foot propped up on a pillow and obviously broken, but otherwise seems hale enough. "They looked like celestials to me, black-winged women who lay injured on the road. They attacked in-mass however, and..." Here his eyes darkened. "Nobody survived but me, and I nearly died too. Would have if not for Seyardu and the other healers here."

Paenitia waves her hand in the air, accompanied by the creak of leather and scrap of the metal gauntlet plates, her mask turned towards Seyardu, "the planning and the preparation I do not mind. It is understood. It will be done."

The newly arriving Shalethiste gets a nod of welcome from the heavily armoured Lucht, standing on a chair, "A new dark one! Hola!"

Then her attention, and her mask, turns back towards Mei. She nods once, "the classic trap, the call for help that is not. I have not hear of this kind before."

She falls silent for a moment. She is rather ignorant on the topic of devils. "Hmm... how many in your group? What the formation you take to approach?"

GAME: Shalethiste rolls knowledge/religion: (5)+7: 12

Shalethiste brightens her smile a little bit and bows her head as she steps inside, "And upon yours as well." she returns. There's a quick look to the masked woman, but as the man himself speaks, she gives a little bow, "I am Shalethiste, of Eluna's Silver Guard. Well met."

She exhales a almost whispered 'hmmm' on note of the 'celestial women', and replies gently, "I know of no celestials like you describe, though certain evils from beyond try to cloak themselves in beauty to hide their vile nature. It could be one of those, though.... I fear I'm not sure which. Where was this?"

Seyardu pours a cup of tea for the lucht, and offers it, and she pours another, offering it to Mei with a plated sandwich and scone. "You have lost a fair bit of blood, and having enough sugars is important." She says. "The scones made by the Althean temple, their bakers are some of the best in the city, even with the amount they do daily."

"They are dangerous, and the weapons I carried did little to harm them. If we are to attempt to deal with any of their sort, a proper plan is necessary.

"Yes, I have fallen for similar traps in the past. Preying upon the good nature of people is foul, and seems in line for the nature of these fiends."

She turns back to the elf, and gestures to the tray. "Would you like some tea and food? I brought extra, in case any showed up, which seems to have been a good decision."

"Erinyes, Ashwings. They look almost human, but their appearance hides hearts of cruelty and malice. I have seen their work first hand, and it is, not good."

"I am Mei." Responded the man to the introduction of Shalethistle, shifting on the bed to be more comfortable and taking the food which is offered to him. He doesn't touch it yet though, seeming too disheartened by his own talk to eat now. "I am reluctant to tell you where I was attacked; lest you try and go alone." Here he glances at Paenitia whom had threatened to do that very thing.

"As Seyardu says, I'm told that these... celestial-looking creatures were in fact devils. I think that they were trying to stop my companions and me from getting to the dungeon that we discovered. Why... I don't know." Mei fell silent a moment then continued to answer the question that Paenitia had asked him. "We didn't have a strategy, or a formation. We saw injured women and just... tried to help. We weren't expecting them to attack us. They..."

There was horror growing in his eyes and on his face, his body hunching over his plate. "It was terrible. The things they did... I..." A tear slid down his face. "One of them broke my leg so that I couldn't run and all I could do was watch while they tortured us. They /enjoyed/ it."

Shalethiste smiles warmly to the offer with a, "That would be lovely, thank you." and she steps closer to the lot. The note about the Erineyes gets filed for later accommodation, but she continues to listen to the man answer the questions put before him.

A dungeon?

She steps forward as the man's recount takes him back into the instant, reaching out toward him in what's meant as a placative gesture, "No, easy, easy Mei, you're here, now. You're safe...!" she says in as soothing a tone as she can manage. Knowing her race's penchant for people skills, she's is broaching this goal with more hope than optimism.

"Yes, I take the sandwiches too, do not fear." Paenitia says once she's received her cup. She's faced with her daily challenge, eating and drinking without revealing her face. She carefully climbs down off the chair, becoming a floating hat once more. The chair is moved away from the bed, becoming an impromptu table. The Red Knight turns towards the wall, enough to tilt her mask and hat up to take a sip.

The cup is then placed on the chair. The hat wanders to where the platter is, and a hand is seen reaching up, searching around, as well as the little Lucht standing on tip-toe.

Her ears remain on the conversation, even if they are hidden by the mass of her dark hair. She can only hear the emotion in his voice, her vision full of legs and bed. "I have seen the wreck after torture in Isobar. I can imagine these things. My heart squeeze with sympathy to know what you witness."

"It is alright, Mei, you are safe here, I understand what they have done, but you cannot let their actions consume you." Seyardu sighs. "They are cruel beyond measure, but when the time comes, they will be dealt with, for all they have wronged."

The silver sith-makar pauses, and she reaches into her bag. From inside she pulls out a small, long leather bag, which she offers to the knight. "I have seen some of your struggles with eating and drinking, Paenitia, and this one thought having this would help. I had it made when I went to have the armor made."

The red hat moves over towards Seyardu, where Paenitia takes the gift. "Much thanks!"

It's clearly taking everything that Mei has not to fall apart. He takes deep breaths, but the best he can manage is to sit there for a long moment, head bowed and tears dripping onto his food. Shalethistle's words make him nod, and he looks up at her, his dark eyes haunted by the things he's seen. "I know I don't have any money to offer you... but... please."

He looks at Seyardu and finally manages a watery half-smile. "You've been so kind and patient with me Seyadu. Thank you." He ducks his head and looks at his food. Stares at it helplessly, hopelessly. He seems little comforted by their words.

He's very close to a nervous breakdown.

Shalethiste watches the mysterious stranger follow her interests in privacy a moment, then returns her attention to the troubled soul and generous Sith to allow her that indulgence.

"No need, my good man, it's my calling to thwart evil and defend those in need." Her brows furrow she reads the stresses churning within the man's eyes. The paladin takes a knee before him, a soft hand reaching out to gently alight upon his knee.

"You are protected here, Mei... listen to my voice." she croons gently. She knows the effect of Eluna's blessing on the fears about her, and can only imagine the horror at play within the man's heart, if even so shielded by her presence, it continues to afflict him, so, "Breathe in through your nose, slowly, deeply..... then slowly out through your mouth...."

The Red Knight is big hearted, though it is hidden under heavy layers of armour. Her red hat moves alongside the bed, a small gauntletted hand held up near where Mei's might be. "Be strong my friend. Take the air, like she say. You are safe in the Temple of the Sun Knights; we are the defense, here in your room."

She pauses, her small hand still groping air above the bed. She might just be able to see over the edge, "the Evil will be vanquish. The friends, revenged. Do not worry this task. Rest and heal."

Seyardu sighs, and kneels beside the bed. "Mei, I understand the difficulty of this, and money is not an issue." They say with the gentleness that an almost monotone lizard could muster. "I Wish to help, and you are welcome. We will do what we can to help, but your mind comes first. So if there is anything that can be done to ease such burdens, then please, let us know."

The man does as he is bid, taking deep breaths and trying to remain calm. It is clearly a difficult task for him. He takes Paenitia's hand, allows himself the gentle touch of Shalethiste. He breaths deep and it seems as though this helps. All of them, help him. Seyardu kneels by his side and he looks at her, his dark eyes wide and streaming tears. Suddenly he lets go of the others to grasp her. "Please, go to the dungeon! Take whomever you can. Please don't let them have died for nothing." It's a very human thing he does then, weeping his tears out onto the sith's shoulder. Allowing himself it seems, to finally grieve those that he watched in their final moments.

For a long time, that's all there is. Him crying and him being offered the comfort that he so clearly needs. When he's finally cried himself out, he sets the food aside uneaten. It's been a bit squished and he doesn't seem interested in it any longer. "I'm sorry. I'm sure you have questions. I'll... I'll answer them if I can."

Shalethiste remains there as the man's fear erodes the dam of his grief, and he lets it flow. She gives him a gentle squeeze, "You've been through so much, let it out... it's alright." There's a look to the other women in the room and then back to him.

Questions... hmmm...

"How many were there? Did you hear any other voices or... sounds you never saw a source for?"

She'll have to see about appropriate weaponry for these creatures, and, if they have friends, perhaps something for them, as well.

Paenitia waits in silence as the man grieves, holding onto his hand and careful how she squeezes. She has mourned with others before, though often in a loud way. She waits as long as he needs.

The first two questions asked are ones she would have. How big was the opposing force. The red hat circulates around as she walks and thinks, "the ones I ask normally do not apply, I think. Do they have family, where they live, who the boss-man is. Perhaps, the boss man, but I doubt they fly colours."

Seyardu was caught off guard by the movement, but she just sighs, and moves to hug the grieving man gently. "Cry if you need to, it is not wrong to feel sadness at what happened." She says quietly with them so close, not wishing to be too loud. "It will not have been for nothing, we will do what we can. It is alright if you do not wish to answer the questions now, if you need time to collect yourself. But we will listen when you are ready, as what you have seen will help others."

When he is finished, she takes a step back, and smiles. "Is there anything you can tell us about the structure you found? Is there anything you can think of, which may have led to fiends taking an interest in it?"

"There were three of them." Mei said with certainty, his eyes narrowed in thought. "I didn't notice any voices, save... those of my companions as they were..." He bit his lip and shook his head, turning his focus on Paenitia's questions. "I do not know if devil have families, and I imagine that they hail from the hells. Since that is the birth-place of all such creatures. As for who commands them..."

Here he shrugged and steeled himself. "One of them did seem in charge, but she did not speak her name to us. I didn't... actually lay eyes on the dungeon. We were told it was there by a farmer who's property it appeared on the edge of. If the demons are housed there perhaps that's why they were interested in it? Or maybe there's something inside that they don't want us to learn of." He pounded his fist on his own leg uselessly. "Maybe they don't care about it at all and it was a trap all along to lure us in and torture us!"

"The farms around Alexandria grow many things, I would not be surprise they hide a dungeon too." Paenitia says cheerfully. She's met a lot of locals. "A dungeon that makes devils is not the good thing."

She falls silent, giving him a chance to breathe, and moves to the next thing she can think of, "what their tactics are, the force of arms, arrows, magic?"

"There were three, I understand." Seyardu notes, not wishing to state her concern too much in front of the man who was clinging to whatever hope he could manage. "They may work in groups, yes, and they are capable of magic, and teleportation." She says to those nearby. "There is reason most likely, and likely nothing good. Something which will be stopped."

She looks to those gathered. "We will need more assistance. Three of them, it would be dangerous for us. But perhaps there is something to be done."

Shalethiste glances over her shoulder at the masked woman's observations, "Sometimes, they do."

Back to Mei, then, as she watches him, listening to his responses to the followup questions of the armored Lucht.

Those are.. all, sadly, valid prospects.

"It simply 'appeared' on his property, you say?" the paladin asks softly, "What is this farmer's name?"

Not really wanting to pile on the questions, she's nonetheless forced to add, "This one you feel was in charge.... can you describe her? Was she unique in some way? A style of dress, or adornment, perhaps?"

As Seyardu speaks anew, she nods, "We would be fools to wade in blindly. I have no experience with these creatures, so I would heed those who have."

"They used claws and brutality - and surprise more than anything else. But once everyone was wounded... they worked their magic. I think they used it to keep us alive longer." Mei shuddered, his eyes growing dark with memory once again. "They gave us terrible visions, filling us with fear and making those fears come to life."

He shook his head, trying not to fall into despair again. "Their leader... I could describe her to you but... I think they used illusions to make themselves look different. I don't know that telling you would help you at all. As for the farmer. His name is Gregor Marshal. Do you... do you think he had something to do with it?"

GAME: Paenitia rolls knowledge/local: (13)+9: 22

"Gregor?" The red hat turns and then Paenitia is standing on her chair again. "I know the man. We talk in the market. He have the good family, they have work the soil for generations."

She taps a knuckle against the pencil-beard of her mask, making a small metallic ringing noise. "There rumours, no, of no import." She shakes her head, looking in Shalethiste's direction, "that the grand mere or great grand mere give them Mul'niessa blood. Perhap, the grand sire, but this a thing of no proof or consequence."

Her voice raises with excitement. "The Marshals are of the staunchest pillars of society. The ones I am sworn to protect against tyrants. Yes. I will go. This is not a matter of coin for me now."

"I do not like to assume the worst without adequate information, nor would I wish to distrust without reason." Seyardu says with a shake of her head. "If Dame Paenitia trusts them, then I will agree with her assessment until given reason otherwise. Rumors of mul'niessa blood, they say that as if it is supposed to mean something?"

She shakes her head again. "We will figure it out. I promise, Mei."

Shalethiste considers the small woman's words and nods, "Not unheard of." though she smiles at her properly motivated fervor.

The Mul'niessa gives a little nod and returns to her feet, absently dusting her skirt, "My people have earned a afoul reputation, Madame." she explains ruefully.

That said, she agrees, "It will be seen to."

Mei nods, relaxing somewhat now. "Thank you Seyardu." He looked at the other two women, each in turn. "Thank you all. I was... starting to think that no one would care unless I came up with some money to give. It's good to know that there are some like you." He hesitates a moment, then looks embarrassed. "I'm afraid that all this talk has worn me out a bit... Would you all mind if I... got some rest? You know where to find the dungeon now - it's on Gregor's property. Just... promise me you won't go alone."

"Ha! Do no worry! I do not charge off on errant quests alone." Paenitia says, again sounding like she's got a grin as wide as her mask. Much. She doesn't do it much. "I will find the allies, my friend. We will see to the task."

She hops down off her chair, turning and sneaking another sip of her tea, which is a long one where she finishes it. The sandwhiches are wrapped and put in her meal pouch. A floating hat once more, it rotates as she faces the bed. "Rest. Heal the leg. Get the strength to walk me through the long tale of the climbing vines. This matter, it is handled. Do not let it trouble you more."

"Yes, we will be careful as this task requires." Seyardu nods. "You need rest, for your wounds to mend, and food. This one will leave some food for you, when you are up for it."

She sets aside a covered dish with another sandwich and scone, taking the crushed one back to the tray to pick up. "Peace Mei, do not trouble your sleep. We shall give you leave." She continues, stepping back to the door.

Shalethiste finally brings her teacup to her mouth, pausing to slowly inhale the fragrance before taking a demure sip. She cradles the cup between her palms, then, as the mood in the room becomes 'Let the man rest', she nods, "Please, I know it may be difficult now, but you should eat and rest as you can. It will help you mend."

She sets a hand on her heart and bows her head as she warmly benedicts, "May the Sky Dancer's light guide your path as her song soothes your heart." before turning to follow Seyaru out.

With a clank-clank-clank the red hat trails the other two women, and Mei is left alone.
