  • Title: Goblin Shakedown
  • Emitter: Dex
  • Characters: Chloe Level 2, Smuldur Level 2, Burghuk Level 3, Walery Level 4
  • Place: Along the river
  • Time: August 4, 2018
  • Summary: Ferryman has been hassled before, it's happening again! Goblins this time are shaking him down for money and then wanting a free ride across. After that they'd likely go and mess with locals or do other nefarious things!
  • APL: 4
  • Encounter 1: 1 Goblin Fighter CR 3
  • Encounter 2: 3 Goblin Warriors, 1 Goblin Sneak, 1 Goblin Fighter CR 7

It was a good day for the FerryMan. He'd been tipped and given some leeway to do as he wanted. Standing out on the pier all alone can get upsetting. This dock was a smaller one than the main river crossing and he saw fewer merchant ships this far downstream, but he did get some from time to time. Whilst the bigger ferry had just left, off to go grab just one of those merchant ships the FerryMan tied up his small passenger boat, climbed up onto the dock and was leaning against a post.

He decided to light up a pipe and started to smoke when... a well armored looking goblin came up to him. Of course, in Tenebrae goblins aren't exactly abnormal, "You needing a'cross?" The ferry man asked, but the goblin drew his sword instead.

"I will be taking more than just a trip. Hand over your gold, and give me and my pals a smooth trip across and we'll call ourselves even."

The Ferryman just shakes his head and sighs, "Not again..."

For each of you, you could have heard there'd been trouble in the past week out at one of the secondary ferry crossings by the adventurer's guild. Or perhaps you were just wandering by? Maybe you recently just crossed and were mostly on your way when the goblin arrived...

Walery is just on his way from one place to another, minding his own business, when the ferry he's approaching is subject to this extreme extortion demand. "Oh, hey," he says. "Is that how this works? Normally you pay the ferryman, but if he's paying us, count me in for a share." He's maybe 30 feet behind the goblin as he comes upon the scene. "Or else, it will go badly for you," he says, placing a hand on his hip.

"WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" There is a wailing cry that warbles from the doppler effect as the crier rapidly approaches the river... in a long, lobbing arc that just cleared the city wall. Said crier is also smoking and appears to be on fire. Until landing in the river with a splash. A few moments later, a sodden and no-longer-on-fire gobber scampers up the bank. Smuldurs holds up a thumb to the wall in the distance and yells, "Cannon works!" Only after that does he look around at his surroundings.

Leaning over with her elbows propped on the end of a post, Chloe has her chin resting in her hands as she watches the ships going by in the river, the priestess's braid pinned into a tightly coiled bun at the back of her head by the silver clasps. Her blue robes are sleeveless, though wrapped around her right arm is a series of linen and leather chords, woven all the way to her hand between her fingers.
As the goblin draws his sword the brunette Half-Sil straightens up and as she hears Walery's voice she glances around for a moment, then from her position at the end of the dock on the mainland she moves up the dock towards the Ferryman and his Goblin persecutor, reaching into her robes and pulling out a small silver flute, "I'm sure we can all just... walk away yeah? Or an amienable price can be arranged?"

In the shadow of where the water meets the shore, there's a medium-sized bit of muddy earth. Well, it was just muddy earth. Now, there's a giggling orc in chain armor doing mud angels, churning up the mud to darken the water a dun brown. The hubbub brings him up grudgingly, and the muddy greenish hulk slowly pulls himself out of the water, grabbing a multi-colored poncho on the shore. "Raight, what gut ye? Whut roody fraight be this up 'ere?" he booms up towards the docks.

<OOC> Dax will allow a team intimidation check to cause the goblin to be at negatives for the first round of combat since there's so many of you. "If you roll and you get low, I'm going to subtract from the highest roller, if you roll and get decent, it'll boost the highest player's roll. So only roll if you think you'd be aiding in intimidating!"

GAME: Burghuk rolls intimidate: (15)+5: 20 GAME: Smuldur rolls intimidate: (8)+7: 15

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+1: (13)+1: 14 GAME: Dax advances the initiative order.

Smuldur notices others on the bank and the dock. The ferry and ferryman are expected, the others not. Including the metalled gobber on the end of the dock. Smuldur scurries from shore to dock, eyeing his cousin. Grinning. "Riding boat? To where? Go with?" It wouldn't be as exciting as riding a cannon, but it will take them time to clean and ready again.

The sudden appearance of pepole showing up startles the Goblin Guard who's trying to get gold from the Ferryman. He turns with his sword now pointing in the direction of others, "I... I got friends, coming ride with!" He complains and then with a growl runs up towards Chloe who's closest to try and swing at her, and make an example of the nearby elf. Though he's noticeably shooken by the large group and their near fortutious appearance.

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+5: (2)+5: 7 <OOC> Dax says, "Chloe, you are up, and the Goblin missed you easily. Fear grabbed him!"

<OOC> Chloe says, "kay i will use spellsong and chord of shards, but i gotta see how close to ferryman I am" <OOC> Chloe says, "its 15 ft cone"

GAME: Chloe rolls perform/wind: (12)+8: 20 <OOC> Chloe says, "chord of shards does 2d6 pericing in a 15ft cone. reflex negates" GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+5: (8)+5: 13 GAME: Chloe casts Chord of Shards. Caster Level: 1 DC: 15 <OOC> Dax says, "Roll your damage! :)" GAME: Chloe rolls 2d6: (7): 7 <OOC> Dax says, "Gobbo's still up, pose away."

Chloe raises the flute to her lips as the goblin approaches and swings. She begins to play a slow melodic tune that speaks of the slow flowing waters. as the notes begin to grow in strength a glass orb begins to form and then as she pitches the flute slightly upwards and a clear resounding note like trying pure crsytal interrupts the melody, cracking the sphere and sending crystalline shards to pelt into the goblin and scatter into the river behind hin.

GAME: Smuldur RAGES!, gaining +2 to melee attack/damage/Will saves and 4 temporary HP GAME: Smuldur rolls melee+1: (20)+5+1: 26 (THREAT) <OOC> Dax says, "Roll to confirm critical!" GAME: Smuldur rolls melee+1: (10)+5+1: 16 GAME: Smuldur rolls 1d2+strength+2+1d6 fire: (2)+2+2+(2 fire): 8

The Goblin Guard is pulling up his arm to block as much as he can from the crystalline shards being sent into his face and body. It hurts, a lot, and the goblin screams out, "No sharp pain hurts!" And it gives a great big opening on his side for the other gobbo here to run up and beat on him too! Doesn't even see it coming.

Walery activates his titan armor. GAME: Walery activates his Titan Armor, gaining: +4 Dex

Smuldur blinks as the metalled gobber tries to hit people. He growls and scampers up, pulling out his trusty flamestick on the way. It's not burning since it was in the river, but he fixes that by belching on the end. The remnants of spicy breakfast spark and ignite, coating it briefly in flame. "Why hitting?! Don't hit!" *WHACK* Smuldur hits him with the flamestick.

GAME: Walery rolls 1d20+9: (17)+9: 26 <OOC> Dax says, "Also a hit." GAME: Walery rolls 2d6+4: (9)+4: 13 <OOC> Dax says, "Goblin guard dies. Pose it. No worries Burghuk, there will be more in a moment!"

Walery presses a button on his belt, and a sort of monocle-looking thing settles across his eye, and various lights flash on his odd armory-looking getup. He hefts his death ray, and a flash of light crackles out with a sound like a thunderclap. The goblin looks like he's been hit by a thunderbolt, too, the shot sending his body tumbling. "Blast, I meant to use fire," he grumbles, selecting a different switch on his death ray. "Oh. Problem solved, in any event."

<OOC> Dax says, "Everyone gets 1 round of movement/conversation."

The Ferry Man's eyes are wide and he holds up his hands to the others that are present. He's just shaking a bit. "Uh, are you, um, here to help?" He swallows hard, and looks at how the Goblin with the armor was just decimated by the group. Looking around, he shakes a bit, knees knocking, and he's practically pissing himself, though not yet. You all hope. "Anything I... can do... for you? Need to get across maybe?"

Burghuk reaches above himself with two ham-sized fists and grabs the dock, hoisting himself onto its surface from below with the briefest moment of groaning protest from the wood and a sprinkling of mud across its surface from his trousers. Kneeling to watch several adventurers rush in, he makes a decision to look out towards the land. "Woos de bigol rekket? Alla the scrihmin'!" he laughs monstrously. "An' whar's 'is maights? If'n thir's one, yis nah they moore." He unslings his longspear, wiping mud off his upper arms.

Smuldur watches the metal gobber tumble away. "No boat ride for you!" Then his head snaps around to Walery with a suddenly appearing grin. "Yes! Use fire!" He starts to vibrate anxiously in place, which grows into hopping.

Chloe stops playing as the sudden bolt of energy and sound knocks the goblin off his feet. She too kneels down suddenly, staring at the unmoving form. Then she looks back at Walery, the flute clutched tightly in one hand, "You killed it! But.. but it was... ugh why did you have to kill it?"

<OOC> Dax says, "After Walery's pose we'll be back in init, no need to re-roll, I'll just be adding NPCs to the list and posing situation. And we'll start with Burghuk and roll over."

Walery switches the setting on his death ray and eyes his weapon, though there's no reason to expect damage. To Chloe, he says with a shrug, "Nit it, him. A goblin's a person like anyone else. And some of them are bad people. He was threatening to hurt the ferryman, so I stopped him."

Off to the Eastern side of the docks comes a racket of noise and clambering. "Whut ride soon." "Yahyah." And then some chattering to go along with it. "Gooznap boat got ready." And then some laughing, "Gooznap hit with rocks, take helmet."

Yes, it's a little gang of goblins coming back to the docks as the goblin guard said. They aren't being quiet exactly. There's one who's in a large amount of armor and points to the docks, "Gooznap ded!" And others look over to see where their comrade had been zapped to death, and they all draw weapons. One of them pulls a shortbo and aims, while others draw swords.

"Zee? Zee? Alla ze fincy bum-sticks inna wuld ain' wort two gut eyes!" the oruch natters, grinning from ear to ear as he stands from his squat and begins to pace quickly towards the invading group, stopping several yards away and pointing his longspear towards the gobbers. "Whyn' ye jis scram, yis nah?"

<OOC> Burghuk says, "Move action to N7 and readying an attack." <OOC> Dax says, "What's your trigger? Someone attacks you? Or moves?" <OOC> Burghuk says, "Comes within stabbing range. Which is five feet." <OOC> Burghuk says, "Oh, my bad. There. Ten foot reach, so if either come closer, they get hit." <OOC> Dax says, "Goblin Leader is going to move up to attack you Burghuk, so feel free to make your attack first." GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (12)+7: 19 <OOC> Dax says, "Better! Your spear bounces off of his armor though, pose it" GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+7: (16)+7: 23 GAME: Dax rolls 1d6+1: (4)+1: 5 GAME: You damaged Burghuk for 5 points. 20 HP remaining.

As the Goblin Leader approaches, though, Burghuk shakes his head with that same monstrous grin. "See? Nah gut ideh." The spear goes out, but is deflected by the goblin's armor. The orc looks at the spear incredulously, shaking it. "Fooka Ciyuteh lauf et me, bistah!" The Goblin Leader can't be seen being a coward. Not after Gooznap just got slaughtered! No, if you are going to be part of a gang, you gotta show up when you come to town. Moving as fast as his little legs can carry him in his bulkish armor, the Goblin Leader goes waddling up more than charging, to Burghuk, swinging his own sword at the man. This time, for once, one of the goblins swing and do some damage. Too bad it's to Burghuk the person who had no part in the death of their gang member. "Git others!" The leader shouts his rallying cry and waves the sword past toward the docks.

<OOC> Dax says, "Whoops, I swapped order, but I'll fix that next round. One of the other goblins is going to go running past you Burghuk. You can make an AoO on him." GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (7)+7: 14 GAME: Burghuk uses an AoO! 1 remaining. <OOC> Dax says, "Oh, wait, since he's charging, you do hit!" <OOC> Dax says, "Roll damage." GAME: Burghuk rolls damage2: aliased to 1D8+6: (6)+6: 12

One of the more squirrelly goblins throws up his hands with a sword and a shield, making a crazy gurgled war cry, then... coughs a bit, and spits on the ground. Then does it again, before charging in the direction of Walery. Too busy looking in that direction he does not realize there's a spear well within range!

<OOC> Dax says, "YOu hit, and kill that gobbo."

Burghuk hisses as the leader gets a piece of him, his jovial grin getting more predatory as black blood emerges from his side, his tusks jutted forward as if he were going to bite whoever came close. "Bikka spih raight bikkit yeh!" He spins the spear around to stab at Mr. Squirrely, downing him. "Thet's wu' ye spis t' do!" he crows to the longspear.

<OOC> Chloe moves over to burgboy and channels positive energy while saying something GAME: Chloe rolls 1d6: (5): 5 <OOC> Chloe says, "all living thibgs in 30ft heal 5" GAME: You damaged Burghuk for -5 points. 25 HP remaining. GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+2: (12)+2: 14 <OOC> Burghuk says, "Wait, did I get my second AoO?"

Chloe returns to her feet and moves towards Burghuk as he brings his weapon to bear against another of the creatures, holding her hands up, flute in her left and a symbol of Eluna fastened to her right by the intricate weave of leather and linen, "Come on now, theres no reason to fight, we are all within this wonderufl city, please just lay down your arms." As she speaks she lets the power of her Goddess flow through her and pulses positive energy about her to salve wounds.

<OOC> Dax says, "Oh! Roll your second AoO Burghuk!" <OOC> Burghuk says, "Enh, not interested in slowing things down. But yeah, reach weapon. Ten foot reach." <OOC> Chloe says, "it is when ever you leave a threatened square. so even if he stayed in reach but moved a square thats threatened" GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (20)+7: 27 (THREAT) <OOC> Dax says, "I'm learning still, so no, point it out!" <OOC> Dax says, "You hit! Roll to crit!" GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (18)+7: 25 <OOC> Dax says, "Roll Critical Damage!" GAME: Burghuk rolls 3d8+6: (14)+6: 20

Yet another goblin chooses not to take Burghuk's heavily-accented advice, and pays the price, the spear going completely through and forcing the oruch to put a foot on the dead thing's chest and shove to get his spear back. "Bist gitta roonin'!" he warns the others with a prideful roar.

The goblin who's been skulking off to the side pulls from his batman styled belt a vial. He shakes it up a bit and then laughs maniacally as he tosses it right at Burghuk. He's tired of games, and tired of life, and is just crazy enough to risk ... exploding a vial of Alchemist Fire on his Leader?!?! It sails through the air in the direction of the spear wielding orc...

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+6: (1)+6: 7 (EPIC FAIL)

And the shaking was... well, too much for the vial and it explodes all over the goblin instead. He starts screaming and running straight toward the river lit on fire. "Burn burb buuuuuuuuurnnNnnn!!"

GAME: Dax rolls 1d6: (5): 5 <OOC> Dax says, "Fire damage to the goblin."

The third squirrelly little warror type looks at the Orc in fear, and then hears his buddy explode himself, so what does he do? Gets into the river and starts moving in the direction of someone else. Anyone else...

GAME: Smuldur rolls melee+2+1: (2)+5+2+1: 10 <OOC> Dax says, "Swing and a miss! Pose it. Probably the water covering him too much."

Smuldur scampers for his damp cousin who doesn't like spears. Maybe he likes fire, instead! "Hi!" He swings his extra-fiery firestick, but only gets the other gobbers eyebrows. Maybe.

GAME: Walery rolls 1d20+10: (16)+10: 26 <OOC> Dax says, "You miss!" <OOC> Dax says, "Kidding!" <OOC> Dax says, "Damage." GAME: Walery rolls 2d6+5: (6)+5: 11 <OOC> Dax says, "Burghuk you are up. Walery you ignite him, and boil the water around him!" <OOC> Dax says, "He's muddy ash." GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (11)+7: 18

Walery shoulders his death ray and squeezes the trigger, sending out a squirt of pure fire out at the goblin. The shot doesn't kill him, but he's definitely not happy about it. Walery backpedals to keep space between them. Correction, the shot definitely kills the goblin in the water. Burning him alive in a river, ironically.

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+7: (2)+7: 9 GAME: Chloe casts Bless. Caster Level: 1 DC: 14 <OOC> Chloe says, "50ft for one minute around me, +1 to attack and saving throw rolls for all allies, >.< I incude the goblins as allies."

Burghuk dances back towards the river, looking positively joyful in the carnage as he stabs at the Leader from the comfort of ten feet away. And yet again deflected! "Roody sooniva mithurliss gut!" he curses at the Goblin, the grin feral now. "How bit you gif me thit shiny stiff you gut?"

The goblin leader moves after Barghuk. By far the largest threat right now. It's down to him, and down to his... burning second? He moves forward strategically holding up one of his arms covered in armor to guard against that spear. Though he's going slow with his sword up, he pulls back with a strong arm, and offers a mighty swing that hits nothing but air.

Chloe holds up her hands as the symbol in her right palm begins to emite a gentle white light, "Come on stop please? We can.. just walk away, look how many have already died, is this bloodshed worth it in a place supposedly civilized?"

Running the rest of the way into the water, the goblin puts himself out. Sizzling water bubbling up around him as a look of contentment occurs on his face. He sighs and smiles happily, like it is the greatest thing ever. Then, he fiddles with his belt, and chews on his lip some... does he? Does he not? Does he? Does he not? Gobbos are crazy! He pulls another vial of Alchemist fire, shakes it up again... the fool... and tosses it at Barghuk, "Dis time buuUUuuUuUUurn you!"

GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+6: (7)+6: 13 <OOC> Dax says, "13 hit touch AC?" <OOC> Burghuk says, "11! Boom!" GAME: Dax rolls 1d6: (5): 5 <OOC> Dax says, "You get lit on fire for 5 damage." GAME: You damaged Burghuk for 5 points. 20 HP remaining. GAME: Smuldur used a Alchemist's Fire. GAME: Smuldur rolls melee+2+1+1: (3)+5+2+1+1: 12

Smuldur's ears perk, all 1.5 of them. "Fire!" The one seemed to like fire, if his shrieks were any clue. But the he died. Now there's another one throwing fire! Smuldur scampers and scurries towards him, dropping his firestick to pull out a fire vial. That he then sets one fire (the vial, not the insides) and... swings it at the other one. "More fire!" GAME: Walery rolls 1d20+10: (18)+10: 28 <OOC> Dax says, "You hit, unsurprisingly. :P" <OOC> Dax says, "Damage good sir!" GAME: Walery rolls 2d6+4: (2)+4: 6 <OOC> Dax says, "Okay, Goblin Leader is still up, but you did hurt him." <OOC> Dax says, "Pose it. Burghuk you are up. You can move to the water and draw an AoO, or you can stand and burn. Or something else. :) Wha'cha wanna do?"

Walery's target is down, so he draws a bead on the goblin leader. He has to make sure not to shoot his ally, but sometimes that's easier than others. This is one of the times when it's not as easy, and the shot of whitehot flamebolt from his deathray only catches the goblin a glancing hit as it zips by. Walery grumbles even as he works ratchets and levers on his death ray.

The back of Burghak's head, back, and triceps burn with the rainbow-sheened oil and he roars a bestial roar, large, toothy maw spread wide in defiance. The fire is spreading up his topknot to backlight the orc's golden eyes as he stares down the goblin leader, backlit by his own searing flesh. One more step back towards the river, and another stab. There are no words now, the roar only interrupted by the grunt of effort in the thrust.

GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (20)+7: 27 (THREAT) GAME: Burghuk rolls weapon2: (9)+7: 16 GAME: Dax rolls 1d6: (5): 5 GAME: Burghuk rolls damage2: aliased to 1D8+6: (6)+6: 12 GAME: You damaged Burghuk for 5 points. 15 HP remaining. <OOC> Dax says, "Pose it, Goblin Leader will 5' up to you, attack. The spear that goes into the Goblin Leader makes him very angry. And the fact that he too got some of the alchemist fire's explosion on him, from his OWN gobbo gang buddy. If they live, he's going to teach that little snarky bastard a lesson, and make him eat dirt for a week! The two angers make him far more accurate than he's been and manages to attack, swinging, and getting Burghuk struck. Poor Ork has been the center of the gobbo's fighting after he slaughtered two of them trying to get by him. And now? The very hurt Gobbo barely manages to hurt Burghuk, weakened from the wound.

<OOC> Dax says, "Goblin Sneak is up, going to try and stabby Smuldur now that he's right there." GAME: Dax rolls 1d20+5: (18)+5: 23 GAME: Dax rolls 1d4: (2): 2 GAME: You damaged Smuldur for 2 points. 12 AND 2 TEMP HP remaining.

Chloe shifts over towards Burghuk and places her right hand upon his shoulder as gently as she can, her fingers lift ed up away from his skin as the medallion woven there continues to glow with the otherworldly white light. "Please, don't resort to such violence, can't we all be blessed under the skies? You too, put down your weapons, all of you, please!" She bites into her lower lip as she glances over wanderer and goblin alike.

The Goblin sneak doesn't do so well without friends, but he's also not crazy enough to bash fire against someone so close. He reaches out and stabs Smuldur, barely nicking him in the side.

GAME: Walery rolls 1d20+10: (19)+10: 29 <OOC> Dax thinks Walery's dice are weighted... <OOC> Dax grins, "Roll damage!" GAME: Walery rolls 2d6+4: (12)+4: 16 <OOC> Dax says, "Goblin explodes with the Alchemist fire that's on him! Or just burns, or whatever effect you were doing. Have fun with it. Pose!"

Walery changes targets. There's a little goblin fighting against out goblin, and he's pretty sure the orc can handle himself for another moment or two. Cycling a lever on his death ray, a small brass object with runes on it is shoved home, and with a squeeze of the trigger, whitehot fire lances from his weapon and strikes the goblin square in the chest. The alchemists' fire he has on him lights up, as does the rest of him, and he becomes a raging inferno as Walery turns to the remaining target.

Burghuk gets touchy as Chloe touches his shoulder, shrugging off the hand with a sudden gesture, healing or not. "Bluedy will stetted it, dinni? Told im t' go awiy, dint listen," he growls, taking a huge step back towards the muddy bank to brace himself, then thrusting downward as hard as he can, his hair falling out in clumps onto his shoulders in the aftermath of the burning. The spear sinks in with a sickening *thwuck*, and he twists it in the wound. "Fooka coult haf givv'n me hees shiney, an' we'd beh ahl doon."

By the time the carnage ends, the Ferryman has gotten onto his little boat. Untied the landing, and gotten the long pole that helps him push himself across the river. He's waving over to the heroes, "Thanks again... if you ever need a ride." He calls out, "Check up river, there's a guy there, he'll probably charge you! I'm just going to go retire! Become a farmer or something... this is far far too dangerous!" He grumbles aloud as he's starting to push himself away, slowly making his way out to the middle of the river and gliding along across the way, shaking his head in discontent about how the days of FerryManning have gone.

Chloe looks over the poor slaughtered Goblins, then to the one that had aided in their death, tilting her head slightly. Then returning her attention to Burghuk, she sighs a little as she takes a step back, "Unneccisary, all of it!" She shakes her head fervently, then turns about and begins to dash away back towards the city to fetch the guards.

Walery looks up as the ferryman departs and grumbles, "Drat. I was hoping to get a free ride after saving his bacon." He peers at Burghuk, but says, "I'm sorry, I don't speak Old High Orcish, I can't understand you at all." He looks to the others, and asks, "Does anyone need healing or anything?"

"Go geefa angeh minigemint couh ti de gobbas!" Burghuk calls after Chloe, patting himself down for damage and laughing wryly, as healing light envelops him, one after another. He looks at Walery and shrugs, grinning ferally. "Enh, noot evryoon's piffet, yis na?" The big hulk kneels down before the dead gobber leader and rifles through his pockets, unfastening the armor. "Wunner woot kinna pleet dis ehs?"
