  • Summary: Adventurers have been sent by Alexandria's Explorer's Guild and the Yggsdrasil Union to deal with the diseased, Infernal Sheep that had been encountered. They are easy enough to track back from the first battle, and the forest gets more infected the further in the party goes. They arrive at a hill, mostly bare of trees, with sheep on top. The sheep look up, they notice Thurid. Battle Ensues, with Tenoc injuring several and taking out a couple in the first rush with his fire breath. It becomes a lot more wooly after that, with the Rams attempting to shove the others down the hill, and the ewes ganging up. Thurid and Tenoc are assailed by multiple foes, while Tawyse, Pasithea, and Havi struggle with some strays. Aimarra peppers with arrows, while Glasha summons in some Celestial Dogs for the dirty work. A few slips and fumbles, and the sheep are finally dead. Healing and a rest ensues.

-=--=--=--=--=--<* H07: Kultari Road Outside Vadran Village *>--=--=--=--=--=-

The meandering Kultari Road runs right past this small village. The village itself exists at a crossways, where Eldwyn Road and Kultari Road converge, before each wanders past and on its way. Logs surround the village Vadran in a carefully laid, though commoner's defense. During off times, children can be seen tumbling and balancing on the log surfaces, or chasing each other in games of tag. In look and form, Vadran could be any of the number of villages that dot the Alexandrian countryside.

Beyond the village is an expanse of farmland, country roads, and the occasional, wooded area. During the days, horses and mules can be seen, strapped to plows and other means of work and labor. During the weekends, the center of the village will be filled with social activity.

The warning 'Infernal Beasts in the Kultari Forest spreading disease' is the kind that gets instant attention and near instant response. The Explorer's Guild, Alexandria and even the Yggsdrasil Union are interested in someone resolving it. A small inventory of Cold Iron weapons is also available for purchase, and have been recommended as necessary. The detail that the infernal beasts seem to be sheep is downplayed; they are really dangerous sheep, and while not intelligent they were observed to have a cruel cunning.

Setting out early, it's several hours to the last known location and meetpoint. The previous battle is easy enough to find. The remains of the corpses are still present, as is the strange, grey-purple flowering fungus that was evident on the trees. Burning it, was recommended. Some of the group arrived separately, so introductions may be in order, but everyone is on page for the task. Find sheep, kill sheep. Don't fall asleep, don't get infected.

Falling asleep isn't expected, but it will be necessary to count sheep at some point, so who knows.

Finding their origin seems relatively straightforward, backtrack the grazing and the fungal-flower infections. All the sheep had horns, and the rams seemed very enthusiastic about butting trees. The damage is relatively obvious, to the experienced tracker.

One of the people present is a half-sil woman, brown as a berry, from eyes to leathers to the braid at the back of her skull, broken only by a breastplate and a mottled green cloak pinned with the bow and quiver of Gilead the Hunter, and an angry-looking scar healed recently enough to still be bright red across her right cheek from her cheekbone to the corner of her jaw. She seemed to already know where the site of the battle was, for any that chose to follow her, and on the road had introduced herself as "Aimarra." Brisk and no-nonsense, she seems quite prepared and is able to fill anyone with her in on the details of these infernal sheep.

Dressed for a fight, today, Thurid had heard of the call to arms and needed no encouragement to volounteer to help purge some demonic influence. The cleric has on her chainmail, Angoron's symbol displayed proudly on her scapular as well as on the heavy iron icon she wears about her neck. She also has her pack, with various supplies for the road, on her back. She carries her Earthbreaker, the enormous maul resting on her shoulder as the jotunborn woman walks along. She has introduced herself to her traveling companions- Thurid, Warrior of Angoron, a cleric skilled in healing and front-line fighting both. She seems to be in high spirits, and will inform them she might bless their weapons if it is needed, and has some holy water on hand.

Her spirits fall somewhat as she approaches the scenes of demise left by the previous battle, casting sad eyes over the corpses and a distasteful glance at the strange fungus. She grips the haft of her earthbreaker with both hands, though it still rests against her shoulder, and sets her features with resolve as she follows those more familiar with the wilds.

"Well, if we do get sleepy, we should get out of here to do so.", Tawyse says, mostly to herself, but likely intended to include Aimarra. The Gnome had returned to the scene of the infection with the Half-Elf, after all.

"I think if we can do so, we should map the extent of the infection, and cut a trench around it. Like they do to stop particularly nasty fires. Then we can just burn out the infection." The wee Druid goes silent for a few moments. "So tell me again what the sheep look like? Are they passive or do they act aggressively? Do they give chase or can we watch them from a distance?"

In the time honored tradition of good Sith everywhere, Tenoc had been doing his duty-- hunting with his group. But the idea of Evil Spirits in sheep had torn the hunting group in two, the greater part departing back for home, and the rest -- ie, Tenoc -- vowing to hunt down the Evil, Potentially Tasty Spirits, and end them at the source

"Hsssk. So, the beast is burned over Great Fire," he explains by way of how to cleanse an Evil Sheep. "Then, it is disssmembered and dissstributed among all the People. Ssss." The Sith rumbles, chuckling in quiet bemusement as his eyes rake in silent survey. "Blessings called. Warmth enjoyed. These are good things."

Glasha's outfit could not be less holy if she'd tried. Despite the starry night motif, no goddess of stars and magic had blessed her outfit, and it was just fabric, no matter how gambesonned up it could be made. The half-orc may have spent her childhood camping with her mother, but she usually didn't have to track anything specific. More 'find us something to kill and eat' level of tracking her mother made her do.

"I wouldn't eat them," Aimarra warns, dark eyes finding and fixing on Tenoc, her head craning with a serious look. "They're aggressive, and while they aren't exactly intelligent, they're not stupid like normal sheep, either. They're cunning." It's common enough knowledge that a normal sheep is dumber than a box of rocks, and she seems to have no trouble finding her way through the forest.

Havi got dragged into this hunting party, lending his knowledge of the environment to assist the party. Currently, he is dressed in his robes and has a hood over his head as they traverse.

he's prepared for everything to go horribly wrong.

Especially if the infernal are the ones mucking about. "Quite cunning. They will do and say whatever is necessary for advantage or survival."

Setting fire to the forest wasn't the assigned task, but it is looking like it might be necessary. After the sheep are cleared, perhaps. It will require a fire-break, and a lot more people and perhaps some magic to control it. Because there's a lot trees that have it, and it gets worse the further it is backtraced. It's spreading up the trees, getting to the higher branches which are both bare from the weather and the infection. Bushes near the ground have caught it, and bumping them releases a small glittery cloud that floats a few feet before falling to the ground. Best not to bump them.

The trees get thinner, and the ground slopes up hill. Soon the hill is visible, in the distance, bare of trees but covered with heather. The forest thins out on the slopes, and the hill itself seems to be loose shale. The trees approaching it get thinner, and worse. The tops have broken off a lot of them, making the base of the hill a tangle of dead branches. Some of which have sheep sized holes through them and a lot of wool tufts.

And on the hill, there are sheep.

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "NOW! is the sheep counting time. Roll perception if you want to count sheep."

Tenoc nods in agreement with Aimarra-- tail thumping in added Sith declaration. "Sssk, this is why Sacred Flame is used," he explains, intoning. "Burn away evil. Sear away impurities. Shamen test, make sure all is good. Then evil is consumed--" He pauses, rumbling in teakettle thought, tail swirling slowly as he stals, glances down, tracks.

"..ssk. Hard to explain," he rumbles quietly, glowering at the air. "It is the Blood. Ancient spirits consume evil spirits."

The Makar grows more quiet as the infestation becomes more apparent, growing along the trees and bark. And then---

"They are there," he murmurs quietly, fist tightening around the haft of the tepoztopilli.

Tawyse looks to Havi for a few moments. "That's why we're going to have a baaaah-becue." The Gnome looks to Aimarra then. "Right, so they're not even good for eating. I won't feel bad about simply slaying them then." She glances to Tenoc, and rolls her shoulders in a shrug. "There could be many sheep. I don't know if you have enough sacred flame, or hungry Sith, here to deal with the problem adequately."

She pulls out one of the daggers recently purchased, eyeing it curiously. "I hope this works as expected."

Thurid casts her gaze back and forth as they travel through the corrupted forest, "Though not enough Holy water, I fear." she admits as she sees the extend of the corruption. For the most part, she remains quiet as they travel through the woods- well, as quiet as seven foot of muscle and chainmail can be- so as not to distract the trackers. When one such tracker up front calls back to the group that the enemy are spotted, she stops in her tracks, fingers squeezing the haft of her hammer as she peers up towards the hill, and the sheep upon it.

The sith is the first to spot the flock, when they're one hundred and thirty feet away. There are a number of them, moving in and out of the heather.

The party is being careful and not making a lot of noise, nor waving flags to attract attention. The sheep will eventually notice them but not immediately. The distance and the underbrush helps. Actively hiding would make everyone that harder to detect.

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "roll 'knowledge/nature or knowledge/religion or knowledge/dungoneering' if you have it.

Sheep are surefooted and good with broken terrain. The might be able to charge through the underbrush. Aome infernal things are telepathic, and some infernal blights cause a sort of 'hive mind'. These sheep probably aren't all 'one brain', but they might have a connection to the fungus which is all around, and that might give them an extra sense, a dangersense of sorts. They might be more aware of the group than expected.

Thurid hefts the weight of her maul to bring a hand up to shield her eyes, "I count eight." she says to the others, and then she grips the haft again, "Perhaps the most sturdy of us ought to advance, and the more agile ought to try to flank them?" she suggests to her comarades taking a step forwards, apparently volounteering for the first group, though not yet advancing upon the creatures. "Before we split up, though, I will call upon Angoron to guide our strikes." As everyone else seems to be moving to hide, she makes an attempt to crouch low. Attempt being the operative word, as it is awkward carrying an enormous two handed weapon. As she tries to move into cover, her significant weight ends up pressed directly ontop of a sizeable fallen bow, cracking it noisily.

Havi seems to smirk a bit at Tawyse, clearly greatly amused by her sheep joke. Alas, his attention is on the sheep with narrowed eyes. "I count fourteen, at this distance." he informs the other members of the party. "Reminder that sheep are good on broken terrain, surefooted." he advises the party. "Though I could be wrong on the count. But I agree...let us split up and divide our advances."

Tenoc's steps move from rustling to quiet with an almost eeeie care; from upright, the Makar moves into a stalking, hunched stance, eyes glittering intently as he draws the quarry into sight.

"..ssk. Three fist-fulls," he rumbles in a low whisper, glancing back to the others. Moving with hunter's care, he slips from undergrowth to undergrowth, tail quivering with the silent excitement of the hunt. "....sssk. Almossst...."

And not even realizing he is using classic hunter's trick-- Big Obvious Distraction (Thurid), as he moves around the rougher terrain, towards smoother ground. Encircle, prepare...!

Glasha doesn't seem to be concerned with anything but staying with the group and staying hidden. More the second than the first. She pulls one of her sleeves down, her outfit becoming the sleeveless clothes of a blacksmith, a translucent, shirtless sleeve on each arm. When she pulls it up again, she has on an outfit that seems to be made of leaves. Yes. Yes, that will do for hiding.

After the crack, Thurid grumps, "Oh sod it." she says and stands back up again, gripping her maul in both hands, "Steer clear of the fungus. It might give you away." she tells the more stealthy ones as she steps away from them to avoid her blunder drawing attention their way.

The Gnome squints, trying to get a good look at the sheep numbers. She looks to Aimarra. "Did they have any particularly weak spots? Something that was effective at killing them? Or was it just a general melee?"

She stands on tiptoe. "I can see four. But I'm short.", she says quietly.

Tawyse nods as the others give higher counts. "Careful getting too close. They are normally docile, but they have a good headbutt. Usually you'd not be in too much danger... but these be demonic. So uh, watch out for their teeth too."

"Cold iron." Aimarra's response to Tawyse is quiet as they approach closer to the scene, and she is quick to drop silent and disappear into the brush as they do.

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "Rolling perceptions for the sheep.

Speaking of counting sheep and sleeping, Pasithea is here. Has been here. Mostly. The sleepy Lucht follows along with the others the best she can. Often drowsing where she stands and almost when she walks. Her face is still recovering from the last encounter with these sheep. A light tinge of green on one side of her face. She huddles near the others who seek to hide.

The Gnome's short stature means she has, perhaps, an easier time hiding. Or it could be that Thurid is the designated distraction. Glancing around, Tawyse takes up a position near Thurid, to prevent the Jotunblooded from being surrounded. "It's okay.", she whispers to the larger woman, "I've got your back!"

The sheep look up.

They do so individually, but once one does they all follow suit and there's very little looking around. They stare directly at where the party is gathered. Well, at Thurid. A couple glance in Havi's direction, but return to staring at Thurid.

One of them, either a small ram or a large ewe bleats. Those who know sheep, would recognize it sounds startled, confused and perhaps even afraid. The jotun must seem a lot closer than she actually is, from her height. This clearly is distressing them. Other sheep bleat and baaah, almost a discussion. Until they stop. Silence falls on the hill.

The sheep stare.

"Oh they are just normal sheep..." Thurid says then, as they startle at her presence. She begins to relax, but then the silence falls over the hill. It's an eerie, unnatural silence. "Or perhaps not." she murmurs quietly. She takes another step towards them, to see how they react, but she still remains fairly close to the rest of the group for now- close, but not so close as to give away their hiding spots.

GAME: Glasha casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 4 DC: 17

Glasha shifts her hands around, speaking words of eldrich that shouldn't be pronounceable by humanoid lips. She readies herself to move forward, more confident and protected, though having to belt out those words did make things a lot easier on anyone attempting to find her.

When the sheep look up, Aimarra looks at the others, and diverts immediately off to one side drawing her bow as she goes, the better to strike from range - and to not be immediately targeted!

<OOC> Tenoc nods! "Fire Breath: 30' Cone, 1d6 damage, DC: 15 REF."
GAME: Tenoc rolls 1d8: (5): 5

Tenoc moves with stealth, silence, senses tuned and keen. Already noting the shift in their posture-- he grimaces, glowering at having to cut his maneuver short. No matter-- he stalks to the edge of the clearing, chest shivering as the fire warms, promises, builds. Getting close to the path of the charge, inhaling, exhaling, readying to *breathe*...

GAME: Thurid casts Bless. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14

The tension in the air is Palpable, so Thurid grips her maul tightly with one hand, resting it against her shoulder. She grips the icon about her chest with the other hand, "Angoron, give us courage." she says, and hefts the icon up into the air. It glows brightly, the light spilling from between her fingers, and washing outwards from her in a wave.

GAME: Pasithea casts Mage Armor. Caster Level: 2 DC: 15

Pasithea follows Glasha's lead and lifts her hands to cast her spell that seems the same even if cast in a different manor. The bits of force forming around her body and shimmering lightly before dulling down to nothing. her head jerks up as she wakes more fully.

The silence remains heavy on the hill. It's like having cotton stuffed in one's ears.

Or perhaps wool.

The wool isn't being pulled over the eyes, but it is coming down hill. The only noise is the clattering of hooves on the rocks as the fluffy infernals charge down. The large cluster of them flowing together to focus on Thurid.

And Havi. Looks like at least a Ram is going for him.

Tenoc's grins, eyes glittering-- hunter's relish. THe first Infernal Sheep gleefully leaps to the fore-- run through just as quickly, short and sure, speared and tossed over head and away as Tenoc's great spear twirls. Another lunges in from an angle-- it meets the same fate, spitted and tossed to lay gasping for breath, quivering among the branches of a low tree. A third drives in, manic, determined-- skewered, but driving itself up the haft long enough for the others to close in to melee range.

So, Havi draws his scimitar and swings it with force!...

only for the Ewe to just stare at him disappointedly as the tip of his blade barely even pierces flesh. Like a needle prick, really.

Havi just kinda sighs.

GAME: Aimarra rolls 1d6+3+1: (1)+3+1: 5

From her vantage point off to the side, Aimarra leaves the close combat to others and turns her attention to a different target - one of the ewes who has yet to reach her comrades. It seems wise to head them off, and she swivels her bow, one of the cold iron arrows finding its mark in the creature's side. No ordinary ovines, these, and despite the true strike, the creature looks badly ewe-sed, but not broken.

This promises to be a woolly fight.

A twist of the tepoztopilli spins the blade, twirling flecks of gore from teh dark edge of the greatspear. Grinning wickedl, Tenoc levels the weapon once more, daring the two still remaining to face him. "Come," Tenoc rumbles, broken words sibillant as he hisses. "Let usss ssee if you are more cunning than your peers...'

A tentative jab out-- the ewe darts back, quivering as hot glares are exchanged one to another. Testing the waters-- preparing the next exchange!

There is a certain distance at which sheep remain attractive, fluffy white things. Too close, and one notices the burrs in the wool, the matts, the things stuck on the legs and round the back.

These sheep are definitely too close. In addition to what one sees on regular sheep, they have dark red eyes. All of them have horns, with sharp ridges, and most of them have bulbous pustules in their fur which have broken open in their rush to attack and through the brambles, and spilled a yellowish ichor into their wool. They also smell, both badly and of something else, and the little sparkling clouds that shook off bushes come off them with their movements. To say nothing of the ugly, purple-grey fungal growths.

The people with the most unfortunate views are attacked by the ewes. Tenoc, Thurid, Tawyse, Havi and Pasithea have their unpleasant attention.

Exploding horns, very dangerous over a short distance.

Never was a sheep so thoroughly pegged as Pasithea's opponent - it veritably sprouts a feather shaft from ear to ear through what passes for a brainpan, and nasty-looking infernal blood spatters everything as it freezes for a split second, then topples over in death.

If one listens hard enough, one might almost imagine _Amazing Grace_ being played on the bagpipes in mourning.

The Makar shudders visibly, recoiling back from the blast of horn fragments scattering through the air. Snarling as he slashes his spear down, the razor edge cuts a jagged arc through air and flesh, a whirlwind of death. "Malsvir!" he growls, eyes glittering with a flare of renewing heat. Not now, not yet-- Tenoc lets the obsidian edge of his weapon speak for him, slashing a rent through moldering wool and diseased skin.

So close. Too close! The ram dives within the circle of spear's defense; Tenoc retaliates, not with weapon but with sudden, savage flurry of kicks. One and another, a flurry and feint followed by a heavy kick to the ram's head, snarling with vicious gusto! Less effective than one had hoped, but still-- cross-eyed and standing stupidly!

Like sheep. Baaared for the next strike!

The ewe in front of Pasithea gets a cross-eyed look as her brain is spitted. She drops. The ram fighting Tenoc gives him a similar stare after his kick, but does not drop.

The rest of the wooly terrors keep head-butting and slashing with their horns. There's an angry bleating from several of them.

As the ram goes down, the big ewe beside it 'baaaas' in anger and slams into Tenoc's leg. The sith'makar is solid, the sith'makar is strong. The sith'makar is not injured in the slightest by this. The wooly rampa... it's not a ram. The wooly encroacher bounces right off him.

'Baaa!'

GAME: Glasha rolls 1d20+1+2: (12)+1+2: 15
GAME: Glasha rolls 1d4+1: (3)+1: 4

Glasha's heavenly hounds lunge together at one of the hellish 'herbivores'. They each grab a jawful of meat and put 'rend and tear' to a good dictionary definition.

The dogs are lining the ram up perfectly for the Jotun.

GAME: Thurid rolls weapon1+1+2: (16)+6+1+2: 25
GAME: Thurid rolls damage1: aliased to 2d6+4: (8)+4: 12

Thurid lifts the hammer up once more as the Ram begins to rise to its feet. She lifts the hammer high above her head as it knocks Havi back, and as it turns towards her she begins it down ontop of the Ram's head. Fluffy or not, she drives it down into the ground with a mighty crack.

GAME: Tawyse casts Cure Light Wounds. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15
GAME: Tawyse rolls 1d8+3: (4)+3: 7
GAME: Tawyse damaged Thurid for -7 points. 20 HP remaining.

Tawyse cheers as Thurid takes down the ram, and the wee Drood walks over to stand by her side a moment. Her hands glow a pale light, and some of Thurid's injuries begin to fade. Glancing over to where Tenoc continues to fight, the Gnome begins to move towards the demon sheep still fighting.

The rams have been defeated, they bleed... and fester.

GAME: Pasithea rolls ranged+1: (11)+5+1: 17
GAME: Pasithea rolls 1d6+1: (6)+1: 7
<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "okay... that hits, and tenoc takes 1 splash, and Tawyse would too"
<OOC> Tenoc has Resist Fire (5). All good!
GAME: Pasithea's Alchemist Fire damaged Tawyse for 1 points. 21 HP remaining.

Pasithea waits for a good moment. A good shot to toss the flask into the air hit her target. Her eyes droop almost asleep at one moment.. and she throws! The flask flies up and then down, striking true and setting the sheep alight. It cries out once and then slumps down, burning and thrashing.. and then still.

The rampage of woolly terror is over. The nightmare of counting evil sheep, done. The silence of the lambs descends over the field of battle.

The ewe is consumed by the alchemist's fire, her wool catching and blazing bright. The purple-grey fungus crisps and falls to pieces, and the easily dislogded spores become floating sparks that swiftly go out.

All around are dead sheep, ewes big and small, and a couple rams.

The battle is over.

There's still the hill.

Thurid hefts the ichor-splattered hammer back away from the crushed Ram's head once the deed is done, and hangs it back over her shoulder. She hefts it once more, calling down the healing light on her allies once they are gathered together. With that done, she will take her healers kit from the pack- and fumble it, dropping the bandages she intended to use on Tenoc's wounds right into a puddle of the green fungus.

"Oh by Angorons sweaty ass crack." she mutters. It has been a /day/

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "No, I think Havi and Thurid failed their fort saves"
<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "and a minute after the combat ends, have to make it again, DC12"
GAME: Thurid rolls fort: (16)+5: 21

"Ewh.", the Gnome comments, "That is.. a really gross curse." She blinks at the bandages in the muck, and struggles out of her backpack. "Hang on, I have a few we can use. Leave those alone, at this point, they should be consigned to the fires." With a delicate touch, and the assistance of Thurid (on where to not drop the bandages), Tawyse begins treating Tenoc's more terrible wounds.

The two celestial dogs dogs seem grossed out by all the demonic whatever in their mouths as they turn expectantly toward Glasha. She smiles at them. "Good boys," she says as she lowers her weapon. The comment is met with two wagging tails before light shines down from heaven and the summoned creatures voip back to their home plane. Glasha looks down to sheathe her sword before moving to the others to help check if everyone's okay.

It takes a short while to bandage the sith'makar's wounds, giving the group time to re-group, rest, extricate from bandages as necessary. Dead, the sheep look even worse, leaking a foul, dark blood onto the ground. It trickles slowly down hill, moving more like an organism than a fluid.

And acting like an unpleasant reminder. The sheep came down from the crown. The summit must be investigated, to be sure. In a few minutes.

After a rest.

Combatty Stuff

<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "Please note. There are a lot of players in this scene, 7 or so and the NPC mobs. I like one round of combat to go by per hour, so that means 8 minutes or so per person. If I have to step away for a minute I'll 'ooc afk'. If it's coming up on your turn and you think you might have to, please do also. If your init comes up and five minutes go by and I haven't heard I'll move to the next person. If you get skipped that way, rather than step back and possibly undo other player actions I'll move you lower on the init stack. Hopefully this will keep things moving."
<OOC> Cryosanthia says, "If you have a CI purchase, just a quick one line of what it is, we'll figure out cost / etc later.
<OOC> Tenoc is good!
<OOC> Aimarra says, "That is fine."
<OOC> Havi says, "cold iron shortspear"
<OOC> Tawyse says, "PURCHASE: 2x cold iron daggers."
<OOC> Glasha could definitely make herself a masterwork CI Falchion.
